For most home improvement projects around the home I am all for getting in and giving it a go, however, there are a few specialised areas that are best left to skilled and experienced professionals. In my opinion rendering is one of those areas. Quite often DIYers underestimate the difficulty of the job and the consequences if done incorrectly. It can be a very costly mistake to fix. Now having said that, rendering is a fantastic option if you are looking to refresh an older home and increase its value. It also improves on the waterproofing and fire rating. I am a huge fan of acrylic renders. They have become more popular
as they have superior water resistance, strength and require less time to dry and cure. Because they are flexible, cracking is less likely to occur. Acrylic renders can also be applied over painted masonry surfaces as long as the paint is sound – be sure to check with the manufacturer. It does cost a bit more but I believe it’s well worth it. A few points to check before beginning any rendering job either DIY or with a professional. The substrate needs to be clean of any loose material and no crumbling mortar in the joints. Any mould should be treated. Very, very important is to be absolutely certain that the area is free of any dampness issues.
Make sure the render mix is suitable for the surface, that the correct number of coatings is applied and that enough time is given for the render to cure. One last thing. Before even considering rendering, it is important to acknowledge the period of a house as to preserve its characteristics and value.

But in most cases it’s really quite a
simple exercise. You can go from a traditional wall shower to a Krome Twin Shower System (pictured) in just minutes with little DIY skills.” Here, Pino gives his top tips for anyone looking at updating their bathroom through a simple DIY shower installation: Preparation Before heading down to your local bathroom supplier or hardware store to pick- up your shiny new fittings, there are a few things you should consider first. Firstly, measure the height of your current shower water outlet from the ground up. “A typical Australian home has a shower outlet height of about 1800-1900mm,” said Pino. “This will help you choose the new shower type and prevent any issues with it being too high or low once installed. “You should also think about who will use the shower. If you have small children then you don’t want the shower too high, if the kids are using it too. In this case, a height adjustable shower like the Methven Aio Aurajet Twin Shower System is a good option that can be easily adjusted for maximum comfort, no matter whose turn it is.” Once you have the measurements in hand you can start to
think about the type of shower to suit your requirements. Depending on the type of shower you choose you will need to have the following tools on hand: • Power drill with a Masonry drill bit or Diamond-tip drill bit (if you need to drill new holes in tiles) • Adjustable spanner • Screwdriver • Water spray bottle • Bathroom silicone/sealant • Teflon tape “Never use the hammer drill setting,” warns Pino. “This type of drill setting acts like a jack-hammer and will shatter your bathroom tiles.” Safety first Pino recommends setting down a drop- sheet or floor covering before the installation, to prevent any potential damage to the floor and also acts as slip protection. This can be an old towel or blanket that you may have lying around the house. “When using a power tool it’s always a good idea to have some level of eye protection just to be safe,” said Pino. “Also double check that the taps connected to the shower are turned fully off before beginning the installation.” Installation – the fun part! “My number one rule is to read the instructions,” states Pino. All Methven showers come with full DIY installation instructions and are complete with everything you need to fit the shower, eg. Allen keys, screws and wall plugs. After removing an old shower and sealing around the outlet, Pino also recommends resealing the raw pipework that comes out of the wall before fitting the new shower in its place. “To do this, use a good amount of Teflon tape and in a clockwise direction wrap the tape around the pipe 8-10 times. When screwing the shower on, never rotate it backwards, if you do you must reapply the tape again so you don’t compromise the water-tight seal,” he said. “If you’re drilling new holes into the wall make sure to spray the drill bit where it’s contacting the tile with the water bottle to keep the drill bit from overheating.
