LUCY DURACK’S HAVING ONE ELLE OF A TIME

A

few years ago Lucy Durack was searching for that big break in an industry that offers such opportunities so rarely. Then came the role of a lifetime – Glinda in the mega production of ‘Wicked’ that rocked Australia and made Lucy well known not only in theatre circles, but in lounge rooms across Australia. Now, Lucy returns to the stage in a role equally as demanding and perhaps even more high profile. In 2001 movie audiences were left in stitches when they witnessed a then 25-year-old Reese Witherspoon dazzle the silver screen as Elle Woods – a sorority girl who is dumped by her boyfriend for someone more ‘serious’, who then follows him to Harvard Law School to win him back. Now 29-year-old Lucy is hoping to do some dazzling of her own when she too stars as the loveable Elle Woods in the Australian premiere season of ‘Legally Blonde The Musical’ at the Sydney Lyric. “We are currently doing six days a week and working until 11pm at night, so it’s pretty intense,” Lucy said of her tough but fun rehearsal schedule. “I’m pretty much on stage for the whole show and I literally have to run off (the stage) and get changed in record time in a completely new outfit. It’s very strenuous and intense but it’s an absolute dream come true and I’m absolutely loving it.” Lucy said she’s having an absolute ball on the set of ‘Legally Blonde’ largely due to her fun co-stars, the comedic plot lines and hilarious musical numbers. “The show is very similar to the first ‘Legally

Blonde’ film and follows the same storyline as that. It lends itself so well as a film to musical adaptation because the film is so heightened with big moments,” she said. “In the film there is a very popular song called ‘Bend and Snap’ and that is featured in the show as an entire massive musical number, it’s hilarious.” For Lucy stage acting was something she wasn’t born into but grew a love and passion for at an early age. “I always loved musicals and I always loved acting but I didn’t come from a family of entertainers at all,” Lucy said. “My dad worked in the oil industry and my mum is a primary school teacher, nobody in my family performed for a living at all, so I didn’t really know if it was a viable career option. “While I was in my final year at school in Perth my drama teacher told me about this course at WAAPA for Bachelor of Arts and Musical Theatre. I auditioned and got into that and it completely changed my life and that’s how I ended up where I am.” In recent years not only has Lucy starred in a number of stage, TV and movie productions but she’s also performed to a television audience of millions, firstly at the 2008 AFL Grand Final, and this year at State of Origin Game II. One moment that sticks out most in Lucy’s head was performing for Queen Elizabeth II and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh on their 2011 royal tour of Australia. “I got to meet the Queen and her husband last year and they were absolutely lovely.” ‘Legally Blonde’ also stars Rob Mills, who is now forging a theatrical career.
