espite Sydney’s fickle weather, about 3,000 people turned out to enjoy the Dulwich Hill Community Fair last Sunday. Before the rain hit, the streets

were busy with punters perusing the mix of food, local business and gift stalls. Visitors enjoyed tasty treats from Spanish, German and Portuguese food outlets, while others took the opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping, bagging bargains on locally-made jewellery

and homewares. The talented artists from Dulwich Hill’s Westsyde Connection presented a live street art demonstration, cheerily persevering with the artwork while the rain bucketed down around them. The fair embraced a Christmas theme this year with a carols concert

from Dulwich Hill Public School students, a petting zoo featuring baby reindeer and a fleeting visit from a very busy jolly man in red. Visitors to the fair are invited to tell the Council what they thought of the day by doing a short survey. The survey is available on Council’s website.

BDS support withdrawn Greens recognise BDS campaign as political strategy, but not the party s official position BY LOUISE BOURKE

T

he NSW Greens have withdrawn their support for the international boycott against Israel and abandoned the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign as an official position. At a State Council meeting last Sunday, every local Greens group voted on a revised motion to recognise the BDS campaign as a legitimate political strategy, but not the party branch’s official position. It is in reaction to Marrickville Council’s in-principle adoption of the BDS policy in December last year, which drew widespread criticism and thrust the thenmayor, Fiona Byrne, into the media spotlight. The controversy surrounding the Greens stance on the BDS also cost Cr Byrne crucial votes in this year’s State Election when she ran

against Labor’s Carmel Tebbutt for the seat of Marrickville. Cr Byrne would not comment on the particulars of the meeting or Council’s BDS campaign, but said instead: “As a Greens member I supported the decision of the NSW Greens in December 2010 and I support the recent decision made by the NSW Greens on the weekend”. Greens spokeswoman, Senator Lee Rhiannon, said despite a variety of views among Greens members on the BDS, there was “a strong and united commitment to continue our work for Palestinian human rights”. The revised motion also reaffi rmed the Greens’ position that the Federal Government should stop military cooperation and trade with Israel. What are your thoughts? Email Louise.Bourke@ innercityweekender.com.au or phone 9549 1190.

The BDS campaign put former Marrickville Mayor, Fiona Byrne, in the spotlight.

Marrickville Council has approved the preparation of a plan to upgrade Jack Shanahan Reserve, the southern gateway to the GreenWay, with funds likely to be allocated in the 2012-13 Budget. Councillors voted on the plan at a Council meeting on Tuesday night. A ‘Friends of the GreenWay’ spokesperson said: “Better access in and across the site and more bush planting plus other refurbs is an important strategic move. We’ll be actively providing ideas and suggestions for the plan”.

The independent pricing regulator (IPART) has announced that local councils will be allowed to increase average rates by 3.6 per cent next fi nancial year, adding about $30 to the annual rate bill. About 0.4 per cent of that hike is aimed at helping councils cope with the carbon tax. “Given that it is currently uncertain how quickly the carbon price will flow into prices, we have set the amount of the advance conservatively,” said Jim Cox, Chief Executive Officer and Full Time Tribunal Member of IPART.

imagine’ was the theme for the forum designed for school students, youth groups and youth service providers. About 50 students from local schools including Marrickville High and St Maroun’s College took part in interactive workshops on Wednesday. “We want to see increased opportunities for

them – to see them develop their capabilities. We believe one of the best ways to achieve this is to simply ask our local young people for their ideas,” said Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna. The outcomes of the forum will be used to inform Council’s revised Marrickville Youth Strategy 2012-2016, to be drafted next year.

P O LI CE SNAP SH OT Vicious attack: Man uses bat and brick

RPA Hospital's King George V building last Thursday had a giant red ribbon to recognise World AIDS Day.

15 years of waiting... But now two local pharmacies are authorised to carry HIV/AIDS medication

T

wo local pharmacies have been selected by the NSW Government to provide lifesaving treatments for people living with HIV. Blooms in Marrickville and Enmore 7-day Pharmacy are among only seven pharmacies state-wide to be authorised to carry the medication under the Enhanced Medication Access Scheme. “People living with HIV have waited over 15 years for more convenient access to their

medications,” said NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner. “Not only will we be improving access to these life-saving treatments, but we hope that with more people with HIV on treatments we will be able to simultaneously lower the number of new infections.” Under the new scheme, patients who are stable on their medications and meet certain criteria may elect to have their medications delivered to their home or workplace. A number of the select retail

pharmacies will also operate as pickup locations for patients. HIV rates in NSW have remained stable with 307 new diagnoses in 2010. Last year, NSW Health provided treatment, care and support services to more than 10,000 HIV-positive people. At RPA Hospital last Thursday, a giant red ribbon was hung up on the King George V building to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Day.

A 25-year-old Marrickville man was arrested at an Addison Road home on Tuesday night and charged with aggravated breaking and entering, committing a serious indictable offence and malicious damage. It is alleged the man attacked a 21-year-old Guildford West resident with a baseball bat and brick while he was sleeping in his home on Sunday night. Th ree men ripped the rollers of the windows, smashing them with the bat, before forcing their way into the home and assaulting the man. Neighbours of the man called the police and the 21year-old was taken to Westmead Hospital suffering lacerations to his legs, hands and feet, as well as minor cuts and bruising. The Marrickville man was refused bail and appeared at Newtown Local Court on Wednesday, December 7. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Double charge: Graffiti and drug supply At about 1.40am on Saturday, December 3, Newtown police were called to a phone booth on Brown Street in Newtown after reports of a male maliciously damaging the phone box. When the 21-year-old saw police approaching he fled

the scene, with police giving chase and apprehending him a short distance away. He was promptly arrested for the graffiti, however police also located a number of ecstasy pills hidden inside his cigarette packet. The man was charged with a number of offences and granted bail to appear before Newtown Local Court on January 10, 2012. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Pedestrian hit: Man has leg amputated A pedestrian had his leg amputated after being hit by a car in Newtown on Sunday, December 4. At about 12.30am, the 48-year-old man was standing on the footpath waiting for a bus at a stop on King Street near the intersection of Lord Street. A Holden Commodore travelling north lost control, mounted the kerb and hit the man. The pedestrian was treated at the scene before being taken to RPA Hospital. Due to the extent of his wounds, doctors were forced to amputate the man’s right leg. He remains in a serious condition with a fractured pelvis and internal bleeding. The 21-yearold driver of the Holden was not injured and has been subjected to mandatory blood and urine tests. Anyone who witnessed the crash should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Paddock to plate New mural raises awareness about impact of food waste BY LOUISE BOURKE

A

new addition to the inner west’s street art landscape takes its inspiration from the bush, rousing locals to keep watch over waste. Inspired by the Love Food Hate Waste Program, which raises awareness about the impact of food waste, the mural is located at Alfalfa House on the corner of Enmore Road

068ICD1382

and Phillip Street, Enmore. It portrays the seasonal changes in food production and the journey of food from paddock to plate. Artist collective, Province – who work with a variety of local freelance artists and designers – was selected to complete the design and paint work. The Love Food Hate Waste Program urges people to select produce that is in season and produced locally – a philosophy

that is followed by food cooperative, Alfalfa House. Households can avoid food waste by planning meals in advance, writing a shopping list, measuring serving sizes, storing food correctly and using leftovers. Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna, said the Council was working with the community to achieve a target of zero waste by adopting new technologies and maximising opportunities to recycle and reuse.

➤ The Watershed's free workshop series is still running. Th is week’s workshop is ‘DIY Bike Panniers’, which will show you the range of bike panniers available, the best panniers for different purposes and how to maximise the storage space. The workshop is on Saturday, December 10 from 1pm-3pm at the Watershed, 218 King Street, Newtown. The workshops, which provide the knowledge and skills to make practical changes toward sustainable living, are also an opportunity to meet like-minded members of the local community, share ideas and together make changes for sustainability. All workshops are free and bookings are essential. Visit the council website to make a booking. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ➤ A $4,000 Community Heritage Grant has been awarded to Council to fund a Significance Assessment of Council’s Local History Collection. As part of the grant funding, a Marrickville Council staff member attended an intensive three-day workshop in preservation and collection management at the National Library, the National Archives of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra. Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna, said the grant would highlight the value of Council’s history collection to the local community and allow Marrickville Library to better direct resources to caring for the collection.

Cash rate cut What it means for business For around 2.5 million Australians with variable rate home loans, Christmas may have come early this week when the Reserve Bank cut the official cash rate for the second month in a row. Most lenders are expected to pass on some or all of this rate cut in full to home loan customers, but will they do the same for small business borrowers? The short answer is we hope so. The longer answer is that business loans are a different beast to mortgage products because many are not linked to the cash rate and so they fluctuate depending on the money markets. But if business loans are residentiallysecured there is really no excuse for the banks to not pass on rate cuts this month. In November all of the big four banks cut some of the business loans by at least 20 basis points. Clearly the rate cuts couldn’t come at a better time. The Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia’s chief Peter Strong pleaded with the big banks to pass on the full 25 basis point reduction to business borrowers. He predicted that business insolvencies would more than double by the end of next year. While the business lending market is less competitive than the mortgage one, there are great deals on business term loans and overdrafts.

Would it not be fair to say that, maybe if we ate foods like free range chicken, pasture fed beef, pesticide, herbicide and fungicide free fruit and vegetables then we could quite possibly make a difference to the state of health in our country? Real health comes from good choices and every dollar we spend is quite literally a vote that says that we want more of what we bought to be included into our life. Who would you rather give your hard earned money (vote) to? A product manufactured in a lab and made up of ingredients we cannot pronounce and our body can’t recognise? You are likely to be feeling hormonal and strange as the full moon is stirring you up psychologically. Life is going to be frustrating and you will find it difficult to let go of past hurts. Just when you thought you’d moved beyond the pain of it all, certain things will pop up and remind you of what you had both good and bad! Try to look forward and appreciate the lessons you’ve learned instead of dwelling on the negative.

LIFESTYLE

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9 2011

June 22 to July 22

This is a highly stressful time at work and home and you are likely to be feeling tired. Unfamiliar surroundings will make you feel uncomfortable so plan to enjoy your home life and try your best to have some ‘me time’. There is going to be some confusion between your own feelings and the world around you, so it’s important to have faith in yourself, listen to your intuition and don’t allow other people’s thoughtlessness to upset you.

Full Moon In Gemini, Nov 24th - Dec 9th 2008

Francis A Bevan libra

September 24 to Oct 23

Some disputes, worries or disagreements with relatives are likely to bug you and make you feel frustrated. Try not to let other people’s thoughtless words create pressure for you. This is also not the ideal time to debate taboo subjects such as politics, religion or the environment. Try to step outside your normal way of looking at things and remember that everybody is entitled to their own point of view – try to remain impartial.

scorpio

October 24 to Nov 22

Problems are likely regarding legal issues so don’t try to break any laws, otherwise you are sure to be caught out. Even though it is the festive season, do your best to stay sober, even if you’re in the company of friends. Things that are not your fault or responsibility will land you in some kind of trouble and if you retaliate carelessly, which is more likely the case if you’re intoxicated, this will just complicate and confuse matters even further!

sagittarius

Nov 23 to Dec 21

A powerful person who wishes to manipulate certain circumstances will want to force you into doing things their way. However, being forceful yourself will not work and will only backfire. To deal with this situation you’ll need some assistance. There are people around you who know this person’s game and can give you insights into how to deal with it. Diplomacy, sweetness and flattery are your keys. 068ICD1277

capricorn

Dec 22 to January 20

Try not to get on the wrong side of colleagues, bosses and co-workers at this time. Don’t treat the people you are working with as enemies, if you do they will look at you with suspicion. If you have an important meeting to attend be certain to bring all the facts and figures everybody needs with you. Be very careful of over taxing yourself, it’s important to watch your diet and get enough rest for your energy to return to normal.

July 23 to August 23

You might feel sympathetic towards a friend, but completely illequipped to handle their outbursts. Think carefully about whether you’re capable of helping someone in their situation. Listen to the other person’s troubles but try to avoid passing judgement or feeling as though you have to solve the dilemma for them. Also be prepared for an unexpected change of plans when it comes to a social event, and there’s bound to be plenty of them.

virgo

August 24 to September 23

Problems are likely regarding red tape and bureaucratic bungles, and it seems as though everybody is going to be in a buck-passing mood at this time. Spanners are likely to be thrown into the works when all you are searching for is a little more clarity. However, don’t be at all put off by this – just remember that all problems have an answer. You simply need to use some lateral thinking in order to find the best course of action to take at this time!

aquarius

January 21 to Feb 19

Extra demands and responsibilities and a general feeling of being snowed under will be making your life a little harder than usual. There may also be concerns for you about one of your children, perhaps they haven’t been coping with things as well as they normally do. Social arrangements may also go upside down. Thankfully though, you’ll get to spend an afternoon with a friend who’s in the same boat, so be sure to talk things through.

pisces

February 20 to March 20

Problems and frustrations are likely on the home and family front. Children might need extra attention and if you are involved with renovations then matters may become rather complicated indeed. Also if you keep losing or misplacing things, obviously you need a better system of managing and organising the details of your life. You’ll also be drawn to reminisce about the places that were formative or significant in your past.

Material Culture centres on the conceptual dialogue between the material object and an increasingly networked and immaterial culture. “The inspiration of Material Culture stems from the current shift that is occurring globally in design culture from a technological and consumption driven focus, to one where technology has become a social tool,” said Evert Ypma, exhibition director and visiting fellow to the UTS School of Design. his summer, Belvoir’s Downstairs Theatre will be converted into a boxing gym: a place of dreams, of glory, of a better life. ‘I’m Your Man’ is a sweaty, energy-fuelled study of contemporary masculinity that places the audience at the centre of the action. For 18 months, theatre-maker Roslyn Oades (Stories of Love and Hate) and her trusty tape recorder followed a determined young boxer from Bankstown through his preparations for a world-title fight. I’m Your Man is the story of those she met along the way: past legends, up-and-comers and failed contenders whose lives have been irreversibly changed by the fight game. The actors – including newcomers Mohammed Ahmad and Billy McPherson – wear earpieces and take their words directly from the ringsides, gyms and dressing rooms of Oades’ recordings. I’m Your Man is on at the Belvoir Theatre from January 12 to February 5, 2012 as part of the Sydney Festival.

I’m Your Man will play at the Belvoir Theatre next year.

here are few places on earth that British adventurer and all-round nice guy, Bear Grylls, hasn’t visited. There are fewer still that he regards as a challenge. That’s the case in this week’s episode as Bear travels to ‘Big Sky Country’ – Montana, USA – one of the last untouched and remote areas in America. Watch to see how he survives camping out with no food or water, fights the overwhelming heat and cold and keeps his wits about him in a vast and unchanging desert landscape where he discovers he’s never completely alone.

What a great weekend for the Randy-Petes. It was great to get back on the paddock after a week of English weather, and we started with a Limited Overs match against Sydney at Drummoyne Oval. We batted fi rst and Damian Wall got us off to a flying start with some brutal hitting, but then Sydney pegged us back with some good bowling to see us fi nish our 50 overs with only 229 on the board. While not being the biggest score, I thought we could defend it if we bowled and fielded well, but alas Sydney were up to the task and chased the total down with ease. We held a team meeting after the match and chatted about how to turn things around as Sunday was the Twenty 20 Finals. Getting the basics right and trusting our natural ability was the consensus throughout the group, and when we arrived

at Bankstown Oval Sunday morning, the boys looked up for the challenge ahead. Our fi rst fi nal was against the top ranked Sutherland outfit, with the winner progressing through and the loser packing their bags. The plan of getting the basics right and trusting our games worked a treat as we immediately had the lads from the Shire under pressure early to restrict them to a mediocre total that we were able to chase down with relative ease. The win meant we played Penrith for a spot in the grand fi nal, but the heavens opened up to delay the start of the match. Once underway we were able to continue our good form with the ball to keep the Panthers to a small, but challenging total in the conditions. Our chase started well but we got the wobbles in the middle to see the game come down to the wire

Viv for a night on the town with two of his great mates, Sir Ian Botham and Sir Richard Hadlee! It is rare to be in the presence of one person that has been knighted, but to be having a quiet ale with three was mind blowing! It was unbelievable to hear these great players talk about all things cricket, and especially funny when they relive old stories of their games against each other! I also attended the Levis jeans launch with Jason Stevens, where there was a pair of jeans worth $150,000 on display. I thought for that price they would be made of diamonds but they were just a plain pair of jeans! On Saturday night I attended a function for the Save Our Sons Charity. It was an emotional and moving experience. The love and support everyone gave raising money for the charity was special, it really highlighted the mateship Australian’s have.
