arrickville High School student, Talia Kaur, has topped the state in Design and Technology in this year’s HSC exams. Ms Kaur was presented with a certificate by NSW Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli, at a First in Course ceremony in Sydney on Tuesday. She was among 100 high-achieving students from across NSW that were honoured for their results. Ms Kaur took to twitter to show her surprise at the news, tweeting: “First in the state for HSC DT!! Who would have thought? I guess everything really is possible”. As part of the subject, students had to complete a major project. Ms Kaur created a multi-function wedding dress with a removable section so that a bride could wear a gown for the ceremony and a different outfit for afterwards. As none of the Design and Technology staff at Marrickville High School are textiles specialists, Ms Kaur taught herself dressmaking and sewing to complete the project. John Baker, Ms Kaur’s teacher, said her success was well-deserved. “It’s fantastic. She worked hard to achieve what she did. She would bounce ideas of us and very quickly realised which was the best option,” he said. Two other local students, from the Saturday School of Community Languages at Dulwich High School, also topped the state in their subjects. Gizem Yilmaz came fi rst in Turkish Continuers and Sara Cho topped the Korean Background Marrickville High School student, Talia Kaur, with Education Minister Adrian Piccoli. Marrickville plans for the future

Council s Local Environment Plan gets approved by State Government, providing more homes and jobs for the area Marrickville Council has been granted new planning controls from the State Government under its Local Environment Plan. It will provide for about 4,000 new homes and assist with more than 1,000 new jobs.

Also approved as part of the LEP: • The use of existing non-residential buildings in residential zones – such as a purpose built shop – for specified office premises and retail premises.

N

ew council-wide planning controls have been approved for Marrickville that will provide for about 4,000 new homes and 1,100 new jobs. The plans will allow creative industries to set up shop in light industrial areas and protect the area’s heritage values and existing character. The new Marrickville Local Environmental Plan (LEP) was approved by the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure on Monday, December 12. The department’s Deputy Director General, Tom Gellibrand, said the LEP contained a number of specific local provisions to support a diversity of additional employment and housing choices in Marrickville. “One of the most innovative features of the LEP is that it supports the creative industries which are flourishing in Sydney’s inner west,” Mr Gellibrand said. “Business or office premises in the arts, technology, production and design sectors will now be permitted in some areas zoned for light industrial and business use. “In addition, the LEP will assist in

• Permitting existing dwelling houses in business and industrial zones. • The adaptive reuse of existing industrial and warehouse buildings for multi-dwelling housing and offices, where they are located in residential zones. • Introducing a 200 metre anticlustering provision for sex services premises. revitalising some light industrial areas by allowing small-scale opportunities for people to live and work in one place.” Mayor of Marrickville, Morris Hanna, said he was pleased the Marrickville LEP had been approved. “Th is is great news for Council and recognises the extensive planning and consultation with the community involved in creating the new LEP,” he said.

“The plan is crucial for Marrickville’s future social, economic and environmental development and will ensure residents and businesses have certainty regarding the area’s desired direction for growth.” What are your thoughts on allowing housing and businesses to coexist in Marrickville’s industrial areas? arrickville designer, William Chan, will travel to India in January to take part in a collaborative program between architects and slum-dwellers to improve local living environments. Mr Chan, 22, will lead a team of 50 people from around the world in the Global Studio program in the city of Bhopal. He will join other international students, academics and professionals in researching and working with local organisations and communities. “Architects serve a very privileged minority, but I believe we also need socially sustainable architecture for the most disadvantaged in our communities,” Mr Chan said. “I am able to have a direct impact in the community and have the opportunity to share my skills at a grass-roots level. I find this absolutely rewarding.” The program’s bottom-up approach allows the residents of a community to become designers, while the professionals become facilitators. Mr Chan is passionate about integrating architecture with social and environmental sustainability in developing communities. He previously attended a Global Studio program in Johannesburg, where he helped design a cultural centre.

P O LI CE SNAP SH OT Highway pursuit: Police call for witnesses

GreenWay supporters gather at a protest earlier this year.

GreenWay on track?

State Government will reassess GreenWay plan as part of transport strategy BY LOUISE BOURKE

T

he State Government has changed its tune on the decision to put the GreenWay project on hold, now saying it will reassess the design of the shared path as part of a broader integrated transport plan. Transport for NSW issued a statement on its website indicating that as part of the reassessment the

government intends to “consider alternative options for the design of the GreenWay”. It also said that the construction of the light rail extension would no longer preclude the later construction of a GreenWay shared path. A spokesperson from Transport for NSW would not comment on whether the public campaign had prompted the reassessment, but said the development of a long term transport master plan for the area

containing light rail and ‘active transport’ would involve community consultation. Jud Agius, from community group Friends of the GreenWay, said he did not know what the government was intending. “We are calling on the government to reinstate funding for the approved GreenWay. Any redesign that does not retain features of safe off-road grade separated pathway would not be supported,” he said.

Police are seeking witnesses to a police pursuit on the morning of Saturday, December 10, which crossed several southern Sydney suburbs. The pursuit of a motorcyclist began near Ricketty Street, St Peters, about 2.20am and continued northwest onto Canal Road and then south along the Princes Highway through to Rocky Point Road, Kogarah, where the motorcyclist and a Citroen collided. Police rendered fi rst aid to the 21year-old rider, from Canterbury. He was then treated by paramedics; however, he died on arrival at St George Hospital. Police had been following the rider after he was seen allegedly speeding. Police initiated a pursuit when the rider allegedly failed to stop. Officers are keen to speak to a number of people at or near a kebab store on the Princes Highway, near the intersection of Hattersley Street, Banksia, who could have seen the pursuit. Two men arrested: Assault in Marrickville

Marrickville Police have arrested two men following an assault that

has left a third man in hospital. Police were called to a boarding house in Crystal Street, Petersham shortly after 9.30pm on Monday, December 12, following the alleged assault of a 44-year-old man. Police arrested two men about midnight and they were taken to Newtown Police Station and questioned by detectives from Marrickville. A crime scene has been established at the boarding house and is being examined by officers from the Forensic Services Group. Police are also searching for a weapon believed used in the assault. Sleepy arrest: Intoxicated man found in his car

Marrickville Police arrested a 45-year-old man from Gorokan on Sunday, December 11 for possession of a knife and prohibited drugs. Police found the man asleep and slumped over the steering wheel of his car, which was parked on Stanmore Road, Stanmore. It is believed that the man was affected by an intoxicating substance. Police searched the man and his vehicle and located a knife and a quantity of cannabis in his possession.

Win for bike security The Watershed adopts cutting-edge technology to prevent theft BY LOUISE BOURKE

A

s many riders and bike enthusiasts will know, bikes are popular targets for thieves. They’re easy to get at, simple to transport and able to be dismantled and sold for parts. The high theft rate is why the Watershed Bike Library has invested in a system of branding the bikes with tiny coded tags to protect their fleet of cargo bikes. The tags, just 0.3mm in size, are applied to the frames and hubs of a bike with a pen-like wand. The specks are waterproof, bulletproof and almost invisible to the eye. The tags have a unique identifying code specific to the Watershed, which is logged with a police database. When a stolen bike is recovered, police use a microscope to identify the owners. Ian Allen, from Nanotag, the company behind the security system, believes the technology is particularly effective for bike owners. “Bicycles have a serial number but once the bike is stolen this number is useless as there is no record kept,” he said. “With NanoTags, because they are so small and are applied at many locations on the bicycle, it is almost impossible to fi nd and remove all the tags.” A Watershed volunteer said the technology, which was adopted after a volunteer had their bike stolen, was about minimising the security risk to people who hire the Watershed’s bikes.

10 BUSINESS Business Finance Path to profit

Franchise model is taking off At a time when many small businesses are doing it tough, more Australians are buying in to franchises boasting double digit growth – in both turnover and profitability, according to new research. In fact, the 60,000 readymade businesses currently operating in Australia turned over more than $128 billion last year, according to the Franchise Council of Australia. Not a bad return on juice bars, lawn mowing services and taco joints. Buying a franchise is not an instant or guaranteed money spinner, of course. And in times of fi nancial uncertainty taking the plunge with a new business venture is not without risk. Fortunately, there are a few ways to ensure your start-up is successful – whether you’re a franchisee or going out on your own. First, you’ll need a business plan with clear objectives to help you focus on the end result. Second, develop a marketing plan, identify your competitors and hire people who know how to execute your goals. Finally, ensure you have the right fi nancial products and money management before taking on debt to avoid joining the thousands of SMEs each year that fail to carefully manage capital, cashflow and budgeting and ultimately are forced to shut up shop.

Mars is currently moving through the section of your chart associated with hobbies, children and love affairs. This is a very sexy placement so your love life will definitely be a bit spicy, even if you’re single! Children and immature adults could be a bit of a problem as they are likely to be pushing the boundaries in their efforts to become independent. If you’re sporty be careful of sprains and strains!

gemini

May 22 to June 21

The home front is going to be rather frantic as Mars is moving through the domestic area of your chart. This is the ideal time to look for a new home or to undertake a major renovation. If you’re working from home, you need to be proactive as there are plenty of opportunities and you don’t want to miss out on any of them. Try to avoid crosswords with flatmates or family members.

cancer

June 22 to July 22

Energetic Mars is pushing its way through critical Virgo, therefore if you have something to say there will be no holding you back! This is an extremely busy time and you will be taking several short distance trips, sending heaps of emails and dealing with correspondence. However, you need to be careful of aggressive conditions on the roads, so do your best to avoid road rage!

leo

July 23 to August 23

Fiery Mars is situated in the financial section of your chart giving you the opportunity to make a little extra cash on the side. In fact there could be one or two golden opportunities that are just too good to miss. Try not to get into any arguments with loved ones about financial issues. If a large expense has been worrying you there is no need to get yourself into a state about it as the funds will come.

virgo

August 24 to September 23

With Mars firmly situated in your sign, you will demand a lot of freedom at this time and you won’t be in the mood to be tied down. This could be a testing time for an existing relationship as you may have the wanderlust bug and a strong desire to stray. Just remember what happens to the moth when it is drawn to the flame? You know what the consequences of your actions are likely to be!

Mars In Virgo Squares Mercury; Dec 20th – Jan 9th 2012.

Francis A Bevan libra

September 24 to Oct 23

Mars continues to travel through your 12th house, which means that you’ll have to watch your behaviour or you could end up doing something that you later regret. Be scrupulously honest in your dealings with others and make sure that they return the favour. If there are any brooding resentments between yourself and a certain someone, it may take a little while to get to the bottom of the situation, so remain patient!

scorpio

October 24 to Nov 22

You’re certainly ready to stand up for yourself and be counted. You’ll be more than willing to fight for anything that you passionately believe in. You might even join a group of like-minded people and enjoy sharing your thoughts and ideas with kindred spirits. This is going to be a very busy time for you with your friends and acquaintances, as there will be lots of social activities and important events to go to!

Mars is in Virgo, and that’s the area of your chart devoted to career and ambition. You’ll love to be ‘King of the Castle’ at this time, but beware that your self-confidence isn’t interpreted as arrogance. Make sure you watch out for a tendency to be overbearing and inflexible. You’ll also be fiercely competitive during the next few weeks, especially if you have something wonderful to strive for!

capricorn

Dec 22 to January 20

aquarius

January 21 to Feb 19

Mars has moved into the area of your chart associated with foreign affairs and your beliefs and ideals. It’s important that you adopt a practical approach to any new projects that you’re developing otherwise they simply won’t come to fruition. Start as you mean to go on and everything should fall into place. You will have a strong thirst for adventure and long distance travel, so why not plan a trip to somewhere special?!

Mars is moving through the section of your chart devoted to big business and shared finances. Don’t forget that this means mortgages and credit card debts, so you could make a brilliant money-saving discovery if you make of habit of scouring the business pages of your local paper. Your physical relationships get a huge boost at the moment, so be sure not to allow fears and insecurities to stand in the way.

pisces

February 20 to March 20

Mars is moving through Virgo, your opposite sign, so this will intensify your desire and heighten your need for emotional and physical intimacy. It’s also entirely possible that a partner, whether new or old, is feeling insatiable at the moment. Not that you’ll complain about this. Quite the opposite in fact. All your business affairs go up a notch as well, especially if you’re organising a special event!

Staying Healthy

Learn the pros and cons of what you put in your body

Susan Garrad

Avoiding the development of kidney stones Q. Could you please give me some advice about avoiding kidney stones. I’ve just passed two stones and it was incredibly painful – an experience I never want to repeat. Kidney stones are formed in the kidneys from dietary minerals in the urine. 80 per cent of sufferers are men. Fortunately there is a lot you can do with your diet and lifestyle to avoid the development of further kidney stones: • Increase fluids to three litres per day (water primarily) • Avoid oxalates in foods – oxalates are found in rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, chocolate, wheat brain, nuts, beets, tea • Eat less animal protein • Eat less salt • Avoid antibiotics where possible • Eat more calcium rich foods e.g. dairy products, almonds, salmon and sardines

with bones Supplement with: • Vitamin B6 • Magnesium If you need help with kidney stones make an appointment with Naturopath Susan Garrad at Women’s Health, Naturally, Summer Hill on 9798 9322. Visit www.womenshealthnaturally. com.au.

THE INNER CITY WEEKENDER

Keeping Fit David Stein Not all health food is good. I once lost a friend when he drowned in a bowl of muesli. A strong current pulled him in! This week Sally Hyslop has written her view on what can help make us healthy. I fi rst met Sally many years ago when she was doing work experience helping me out at my fi rst gym. These days she is an accredited nutritionist giving advice and helping lots of people out at World Gym. What makes us healthy? “High cholesterol is widely accepted as one of today’s most prominent and serious lifestylerelated health issues. Although many develop the condition as a result of genetic predisposition, a poor diet high in processed foods and saturated fats and low in dietary fibre and fresh fruit and vegetables, coupled with a lack of physical activity is usually the primary culprit. If you’re told by your doctor that you have high cholesterol you would likely have also been told that you need to address your weight and get some exercise – you may even

walk away with a prescription for cholesterol-lowering medication. The power that certain foods have on improving human health is not fully understood by the general public and still seems to be vastly underestimated in the scientific world. There is a selection of widely available and inexpensive foods that have been proven to bring levels of bad cholesterol under control due to their high content of friendly compounds like soluble fibre, sterols, healthy fatty acids and antioxidants. Olive and plant oils, oily fish, avocado, nuts such as almonds, peanuts and walnuts, legumes, flaxseeds, wholegrains, unprocessed oats (even a small glass of red wine a day!) can together play a primary role in lowering your cholesterol naturally without medication. After all, it is always better to treat the cause rather than the symptom. So if you are someone who is heading into that dreaded ‘higher than average’ cholesterol territory and spending the rest of your life

on medication is not something you want to do, consider ‘medicating’ yourself with the glorious healing effects of food as a fi rst step. Aim for a serving of at least five of the above super foods everyday then follow up with your doctor in three months – you both may be pleasantly surprised at the results.” Sally Hyslop Accredited Nutritionist (BAppSc ANutr) Anything that helps people take responsibility for their own health hopefully gets people thinking. It is important to learn the pros and cons of anything you put in your body. If you ever want a different opinion on drugs or food as medicine, watch a movie called ‘Food Matters’. David Stein has worked in the fitness industry over 18 years training and advising thousands of individuals, clubs and companies. He now runs FITEC Fitness Institute Educating and certifying trainers. Contact David via email: david@ fitec.com.au.

S

ydney FC defender, Shannon Cole, has accepted an internal fi ne under the club’s ‘No Diving Policy’ following an incident in the 93rd minute of Sunday’s clash with Gold Coast United at Skilled Park. Cole went down in the penalty area when under pressure from Peter

Jungschlager, admitting there was only minimal contact between the pair and he had done the wrong thing. “I acknowledge that we have a policy of no diving and we all support the club’s stance on this matter,” Cole said. “I knew I did the wrong

thing as soon as I hit the ground so I got up without asking for a penalty and ran straight back into position. Sydney FC CEO, Dirk Melton, backed Cole’s honesty and integrity. “Shannon has been courageous enough to acknowledge his actions were wrong,” he said.

hey aren’t known for their cooking but that didn’t stop Wests Tigers players Blake Ayshford, Jacob Miller and Tom Humble taking to the kitchen for charity last week. The players took time out of their busy preseason training schedule to cook meals for Wests

charity partner, The Exodus Foundation. They were joined by proud Wests Tigers member and inaugural Masterchef winner, Julie Goodwin, at Our Big Kitchen restaurant to make cookies and treats. While they looked out of place in the kitchen, the boys took direction well and

managed to create trays of tasty looking treats. The cookies were that night delivered by The Exodus Foundation night van to the homeless people of Sydney. The Exodus Foundation runs a night van in the city 363 days of the year serving food to about 200 people each evening.

Everyone at Randy-Petes was looking forward to the Twenty 20 Competition Grand Final, however the weather remained English and it just rained, and rained, and rained… Our training session on Tuesday was specific to the skills involved with Twenty 20 cricket, we used white balls so the lads could familiarise themselves with the difference from red balls, and the batsmen and bowlers practiced like it was a match situation. The mood was good and upbeat as everyone thinks we can win the title. On the morning of the match I went to the Sydney Flames luncheon at the Waters Edge Restaurant. My good friend Bruce Ross was kind enough to invite me, and it was a great opportunity to mix with all the players and hear their views on the game of basketball. After the luncheon it was

time to head out to Blacktown International Sports Park for the big match. Th roughout the trip the rain just keep falling, and chances of play were getting less and less by the minute. Th is proved to be the case as both captains and umpires agreed that there would be no play, and the match would be re-scheduled. Th is came as a great disappointment to me because the match appears to have been re-scheduled to January 26 and I won’t be able to play – I was really looking forward to hopefully contributing to the Randy-Petes lifting the trophy, but I have no doubt that the lads will still be able to grab the victory. Later in the week I attended a Sydney Kings game at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. The atmosphere was crazy, and I especially enjoyed the supporters booing the opposition whenever they scored! In the end the Sydney Kings won in a

tight game, and being a lover on the NBA I was quite impressed with the standard of the game. It fair to say that I am now a Kings supporter! The Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club luncheon was on Friday, and I was lucky enough to able to go with Greg ‘Mo’ Matthews and my mate Nick Farr-Jones. A great time was had by all, and I even ended up singing Christmas carols with some of the lads! The game of rugby has really grown on me since I have been in Sydney, and the friendship now have with Nick will surely see my interest increase even more. So to the weekend and a OneDay match for the Randy-Petes against the strong St George club. We didn’t get the best of the conditions as the wicket favoured the bowling side early on due to the weather during the week, and we were behind the eight ball from the start as we were

unable to put a decent total on the board. I went to church with Nick Farr-Jones on Sunday, and one of the passages that really spoke to me was ‘give with joy from the heart’. Th is sums up how the people of Sydney have been to be during my time here. After church Nick and I met Mo for lunch, a great way to fi nish the weekend. On a personal note I have been lucky enough to be selected for England for the tour against Pakistan. The love and support I have received from everyone here has been amazing, I am overwhelmed and humbled by all the positive comments and energy that have come my way. Hopefully the weather fi nes up so I can play my last game in Sydney before I head back to England, it would be great to get a victory up before I leave this great city that is now so close to my heart.
