Festival in big danger An announcement will come soon, says community centre CEO BY LOUISE BOURKE
N
ewtown Neighbourhood Centre chief executive Lisa Burns hopes to confi rm the future of the Newtown Festival, the suburb’s biggest community event, by the end of next month. Ms Burns is currently in discussions with local groups, partners and sponsors to try to fi nd a funding model to allow this year’s festival to go ahead. Ms Burns has previously warned that the festival may not return in 2012 due to poor profits. “What a lot of people don’t get is that the Festival is the primary fundraiser for the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre,” she said.
“The festival is run by the centre. We made 50 per cent less in 2011 than the previous year, so it’s a big worry.” Rising overheads, occupational health and safety requirements and factors such inclement weather have contributed to the downturn in revenue in recent years. Ms Burns believes that more community involvement with the centre, which provides frontline services in Newtown and further afi eld in Canterbury, Leichhardt and Merrylands, will save the festival. “We’re asking people to become involved with the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre and help us by volunteering – one of the criticisms of last year’s festival is that there weren’t enough buckets to collect donations. Also, give us your ideas on how to make it work.”
Planning department approves Metro The NSW Department of Planning has recommended that the Marrickville Metro expansion proposal be approved, angering many local residents and the council who have campaigned against it. A report, prepared for the department, will go to a Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) meeting on February 13 where a fi nal decision on the Part 3A development application will be made. The report acknowledges the concerns of residents and Council, but states “the likely impacts of the proposed expansion of Marrickville Metro will not be as severe as

has been projected.” Marrickville Mayor and president of the Chamber of Commerce, Morris Hanna, said the expansion will have a long-term adverse effect on the local community, particularly the shopping strips of King Street, Enmore Road and Marrickville Road. The PAC meeting will be held on Monday, February 13 from 1pm-8pm at the Petersham RSL Club. Australia Day is without a doubt my favourite day of the year. Christmas? It’s great to catch up with the family, but stressful… Easter? Ho hum…New Years Eve? Too much hype. I just reckon Australia Day is a brilliant celebration of everything that is great about life, and where is life better than in Australia? I feel I can pretty confi dently say ‘nowhere’ right now because I’m writing this as I fl y from one thirdworld country to another. The view from the air above Sydney is simply breath-taking – the view as we took off here was of slums, polluted rivers, and smog. There’s nothing that reminds you just how good we have it like heading abroad. The grass may appear greener
on the other side at times. But let me assure you that compared to others, our grass is like the pristine turf rolled out at a bowling green. A mate of mine loves Indian food and insisted on a recent trip that we spend some time in Mumbai so he could satisfy his curry cravings. But once we there, he declared ‘Indian’ Indian food awful, and has vowed now to only ever eat ‘Aussie’ Indian food from here on in. But even in world leading countries there are plenty of pitfalls: the pollution in China is vomitinducing, the weather in England is depressing, and try fi nding somewhere you can relax and watch the footy/cricket in the USA! Every time I go overseas, I love the experience. But there’s only one
greater feeling, and that’s gliding in over the suburbs of Sydney and knowing that you’re home. Knowing the people around you. Knowing where you can go and have a relaxing drink. And that brings me back to the fact that this Th ursday, we raise a glass to our mate Australia. The fact we have a public holiday to celebrate the founding of our country is a fantastic thing in its own right. Th ink about this for a moment: we have the most public holidays of any country in the world – now if that’s not something to celebrate, then I give up! We value our time with family, with friends, in the bush, on the beach – we have the greatest country on earth, so why not enjoy it.
Worthy winner of contest 2Spoilt takes out Christmas Window Dressing competition BY LOUISE BOURKE

Spoilt on Marrickville Road has taken out the Christmas Window Dressing competition, as voted by a committee of local community members. The giftware store beat Blooms the Chemist and the Smith Family store in the annual competition run by the Chamber of Commerce. Chamber of Commerce President and Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna, presented store owner Fil Simms with her prize on Monday. Ms Simms, who created the display from items within the store, said she had received a lot of feedback from customers. “One gentleman who always comments on the displays told me it was the best one yet!” she said. The display included a white Christmas tree, various decorations and silver items

Don t issue death notice just yet
Locals set the record straight on suburban shopping strips after story suggested slow painful death of Marrickville Road Parking is one of the main issues impacting businesses in the Marrickville CBD, but it doesn't mean the Marrickville Road shopping strip is dead, local shopkeepers say...
BY LOUISE BOURKE
A
report in The Sunday Telegraph about the ‘slow, painful death’ of inner west shopping strips has raised the ire of some local shop owners and residents, who say the situation is nowhere near as dismal. The story, which appeared on January 8, referred to the volume of retail properties vacant on some inner west strips and singled out four shops on Marrickville Road that ‘sit abandoned’ as examples of the decline. The Inner City Weekender can reveal that none of the four properties mentioned by the Telegraph are abandoned. The chemist and the butcher stores have relocated on the same strip, while the medical centre moved elsewhere. Th e sports store is currently being redeveloped. The Marrickville shopping precinct has a retail vacancy rate of about 5.5 per cent, and while this is above the Sydney average of 5.1 per cent, it presents a healthier
figure than 6.7 per cent vacancy along Oxford Street and 7.1 per cent vacancy in Double Bay. What many shop owners along Marrickville Road are concerned with is the ease of parking for customers in the precinct and the effect this is having on their business. Andrea De Soussa, of Hair Happens, moved her business from the Metro because of the high rents. “Since moving here we’ve lost a lot of customers due to the parking issue – they were being booked,” she said. Owner of Maurice Menswear boutique, Morris Hanna, who is also the mayor and president of the Chamber of Commerce, agrees that parking is a problem. “Parking is the issue,” he said. “I can see it aff ecting my own business. Lots of people try to come to shop, but cannot park.” When asked what the council is doing to address the problem, Mr Hanna said that sections of council are not willing to look at the issue.
Morris Hanna surveys the shopping strip along Marrickville Road.

Many of us will know that not all gifts hit the mark at Christmas time. ore than 40 members of the Inner West’s Balance & UTS Triathlon Club have taken part in a 100 kilometre bicycle ride to raise funds for the Lynne King Cancer Care Foundation. All riders, ranging from 14-yearold Breannan Johnson to Paul and Val Ardill, both in their late 60’s, completed the challenging course

Club President, Mike Steinberg, said a speech by Reg King from the Lynne King Foundation before the race spurred the riders on to perform. “He told us of a young woman in her early twenties who has recently completed cancer treatment, become engaged and has a new lease on life because of the treatment, care
and support provided to her through funds raised by the Tri Club and the community,” Mr Steinberg said. The Club raised over $4,500 for the Foundation through entry fees and individual fundraising efforts. Since its inception fi ve years ago, the Balance & UTS Tri Club has raised over $30,000 for the Foundation, as well as other charities including the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Movember.

Set your sights high Don t be afraid to haggle
Th inking of increasing your business activity in new markets in 2012? You’re not alone. The allure of larger, more diverse target markets will be strong for many SMEs. And with the likes of cloud computing and other online advancements, the world is certainly getting smaller and more accessible for Australian business operators. But even if you have the best idea in the world and a solid plan to execute, your business may struggle to reach its potential without the funds to grow. Th is was a real problem, post-GFC, for many small operators unable to squeeze funds from risk-averse lenders. Some gave up on traditional fi nance channels altogether, instead opting to sell part of their equity interest in the business to private investors in return for a cash injection. Others simply folded. The good news is that traditional channels are reopening and new ones are being created – a handful of smaller institutions added business products in 2011. Before you visit your bank manager, do yourself a favour and shop around for the best fi nance to suit your business needs – and don’t be afraid to go back to your current lender and haggle.

Trends encourage you to avoid becoming involved in the same old things and wherever possible to get some variety into your life. Even if the weather outside is not the best, you do need a change of scenery. It would be best to pick a place where your intellect is stimulated. Otherwise you will find yourself arguing with loved ones and colleagues. This is an excellent time to plan a trip or to improve your education.

The focus is on greater financial security, and you could well be looking at various options over the next few weeks. In cooperation with family members and in particular your partner, you have an opportunity to firm up family finances. Certain obstacles and issues with colleagues or bosses will need to be sorted out on the career front before you’re able to progress on a smooth path once again.
June 22 to July 22
The focus is on your financial security and even though you would like to be the last of the big spenders this is not advisable. You may need to consult an accountant or bank manager in order to see what you can and cannot get away with during the months ahead. There may be some major bills that are going to need to be paid and therefore you will need to cut down on the luxuries for a short time.

A highly passionate phase in your life begins with the Sun’s entry into partnership house. This is the ideal time to discuss shared resources and intimate problems with someone you trust deeply as this will help you to relieve your anxieties. Romance can be strengthened at the moment and this is definitely the right time to tell someone exactly how much they mean to you. At work you need to be a team player.

With so many planets in your area of health and work there is a need for initiative and drive to make the most of your prospects. You’ll be forced to stand out and make your mark on the professional world. In health affairs, the vitality of the planets will make you feel alive and effective. Be careful of over doing things and of how you handle some colleagues as they may be distressed by your actions.

The focus at the moment is not likely to be on practical matters but rather in the direction of intimate attachments. Anything to do with your home is also to the fore, so it could be difficult committing yourself fully to work or even certain social events. Your children will be taking up a lot of your time as they drive you insane with their needs or demands. You need time to yourself so why not take a long stroll!

Engaging in heartfelt discussions with family members and your life partner is something that comes as second nature to you. So be certain to keep the lines of communications wide open. You and your lover may be resolving some of your problems and the making up is likely to lead to an outburst of sheer passion. However, there are likely to be some major problems at work to deal with. How you handle them will be important.

What is highlighted at the moment is your marked ability to communicate your ideas and opinions to anyone who is willing to listen. Confidence remains high, even if you are occasionally shaking in your shoes when confronted by anyone you see as being very important. With so many planets being in your ninth house it is an ideal time to explore new neighbourhoods and to take an interest in spiritual matters.

The major focus is on your financial affairs and thankfully your prospects take an upturn. The next month will see an improvement in your economic security. It may be that you need to lay down plans to ensure maximum profit. Don’t expect swift returns but actions taken now stand you in good stead for the future. Also there may be a few issues to sort out with bosses or people in places of authority.
Success should now be there for the taking as a direct result of your own efforts. You have the ability to get major initiatives to go your way, and to persuade colleagues and friends to help you out. Life may be frantic during the next few weeks, but it will also be very interesting. However, you will need to be careful in the way that you handle loved ones or your partner as major issues will need resolving very quickly.

Your moods are switching from being intensely romantic and loving to strangely distant and detached. Your partner won’t be able to understand you at all and this is not surprising because you honestly can’t really understand yourself. There is a need for rest, relaxation and to take better care of your health and that of loved ones as a connection with doctors or hospitals is likely. Allow time for stress to melt away!

Sore from your last trip to the gym?
Keeping Fit
Eat three healthy meals per day consisting of a palm size portion of protein and three handfuls of low GI vegetables. For breakfast two eggs are a good choice for healthy protein. One handful of vegetables may be replaced by one piece of low GI fruit each day. Include two high protein snacks per day such as 10 - 12 raw nuts, hummus dip with carrot sticks or a small can of tuna. Incorporate healthy oils such as cold pressed extra virgin olive oil as a part of your daily diet. Aim for 40 minutes of moderate intensity exercise four times per week Keep a diet diary so you can monitor exactly what you are eating. Drink two litres of water every day. Avoid all starchy carbohydrates – this includes bread, rice and pasta

David Stein I had a question today about training if you are still sore from the last workout. Sometimes we get sore from a workout, often if we went especially hard or it was the first one in a while. It is known as DOMS or delayed onset muscle soreness. If you train and have ever got up from your chair after sitting for a while and you felt like someone was running a cattle prod into your legs, chances are you did squats or something similar in your workout the day before. Maybe you did them a diff erent way than normal or used more weight, maybe you just did an extralong walk than you’re used to. There should be nothing serious to worry about, apart from the feeling of your muscle getting pulled over a cheese grater! When you do some weight training your muscles are actually broken down a bit, microscopic little tears happen. Your body repairs these and even improves them a little so it doesn’t happen again from a similar workout. Generally the soreness will go
in a day or so. Some people think you need the soreness to ‘prove’ your workout was hard enough. I disagree, to get to the kind of soreness that makes it feel like shards of glass are grinding into your muscles is overdoing it. Aside from the discomfort, your body takes longer to recover, you have probably triggered a big inflammation response which slows normal recovery, and the muscle was worked well past its normal fatigue range which means your movements would have been less controlled and easy to injure and you now probably associate pain with training which can reduce the motivation to train again. Generally two proper workouts spaced closer together would get the same or better result in a safer way with less discomfort and risk. As for the question should you train when you’re still sore: No. Defi nitely nothing more that works it hard. You will be doing even more damage and putting even more stress on an already traumatised muscle. At most do some light no
resistance work just to get the blood fl owing over the sore area, and make sure that blood is full of good nutrients and muscle building protein from the healthy meals you are eating. Even after the soreness has gone, give it a day or two to actually rest and improve from the workout. After all, the whole reason you gave the muscle all that training stress in the fi rst place is to start the whole super compensation response. So give it time to super compensate! Or you will fi nd your muscle results can actually start going backwards instead of recovering, getting stronger and better equipped to handle whatever else you decide to throw at them. See you next week. David Stein has worked in the fi tness industry over 18 years training and advising thousands of individuals, clubs and companies. INTERVIEW
TALKING TO THE BIGGEST STARS
BEHIND THE LAUGHTER: CARL BARRON OPENS UP
“
When I’m performing I like to fill every hole full of laughter and try and make sure everyone is laughing as much as I can.” And for Australia’s funniest person that shouldn’t be too hard to do. Carl Barron started his stand-up career back in 1993 but shot to fame in 1997 with his first ever television appearance on ‘The NRL Footy Show’. Carl said before that memorable appearance he never really had the desire to be on television. “From ’93 to ’97, I was doing my trade on the Sydney pub circuit and just didn’t think I was good enough for TV,” he said. “I was interested in making people laugh but I never had a burning passion to be famous or anything like that and I still don’t.” Carl is set to leave audiences in stitches when he performs his popular all-new ‘One Ended Stick’ tour at various clubs across Sydney next month. With some local dates already sold-out, more shows have been added to the calendar to keep up with Carl’s ever growing popularity. “It’s a funny thing because I’d be lying if I said that I was totally surprised that my shows sell-out because it’s been really good for a while now, I guess I’ll never get 100% used to it,” Carl said. “I just feel grateful mostly because each time a show sells out I just can’t believe all these people come to see me.” Now in his 20th year in the stand-up industry and still at the top of his game, Carl said there’s a lot of pressure on him to continue to keep the bar
perched high. “There is a lot of pressure but overcoming that is what keeps you at the top,” he said. “A lot of good ‘comics’ I know are really hard on themselves but you just always have to raise the bar and continue to make your act better. “I think I’m less hard on myself these days but I’m never happy when half the audience is laughing or when they’re laughing for a half a show, so that’s why I try and make it as good as possible.” The 47-year-old Queensland born comic’s style is based on observational humour, where his act is centred on making remarks about commonplace aspects of everyday life. Carl said whenever he witnesses something funny or unusual walking down the street, he likes to use an updated method of taking notes. “When I was younger I would always write things down with a pen and paper but now I don’t do that because it was becoming a pain but what I’ve always got on me is my mobile phone and I talk into my voice recorder, that way it’s always there with me,” he said. Comedians always have their good nights and bad nights in the spotlight, sometimes jokes work well and sometimes they don’t, and Carl admits he’s had rough nights on stage to the extent where he’s thought he should just chuck it all in. “I’ve had those days when you feel you’re just not hitting the mark but I think it’s like anyone’s job,” Carl said.
Carl Barron is currently on tour.
“People say to me ‘How can you get over playing in theatres and making all those people laugh?’ But it’s like any job. Some days you just want to get away and you get tired. Usually you just need a break but right now I love what I’m doing but I just know if I work too much I get tired and jack of it.” Before Carl was a successful stand-up he made a living as a roof tiler, an occupation he confesses he “didn’t like”. He said life being a
comedian really defines who you are and people will always have their perceptions of you – good and bad. “Some people are going to like you and some people don’t and you just have to learn to live with it but I must admit it’s difficult some days,” he said. Carl Barron is currently on tour. You'll be able to catch him at a club near you over the coming months. See www.carlbarron.com.

hy is Cabramatta and crime indelibly linked in the minds of Sydneysiders? How did political support for multiculturalism in Australia become a distant memory? If you’ve missed this insightful and compelling series on the recent history of Sydney’s Cabramatta, make sure you sit down to watch the final. The confronting end to the series suggests the only hope is that the community itself will somehow find its own way to overcome the crisis – and no-one is sure when this might be.

Council program aims to keep you fit and healthy
K
eep those New Year’s resolutions to get active by taking part in Aquaerobics or an AquaFit class, free in January as part of the Sport-a-Month program. Exercising in the pool is a great way to shape muscle and burn calories by using the water as resistance. Aqua noodles and underwater weights are used to increase intensity, while exercising in water reduces the risk of injury. Aquaerobics sessions are on every Wednesday in January from 9.30am10.30am at the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre (FDAC) in Petersham. Tea and coffee will be provided. Residents can also try the water exercise workout provided by AquaFit at the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre (AKAC). AquaFit sessions will be held on Friday, January 20 from 6pm-7pm and Friday, January 27 from 6pm-7pm. All ages are welcome, but places are limited. To take advantage of January’s Sporta-Month program, choose one session and register by contacting the Aquatic Centres on 9565 1906. A completed registration form will need to be handed in on the day.
Have fun and get active at local aquatic centres this January.
