rab your gloves, a bag and tongs and join in the local Clean Up Australia Day effort on Sunday, March 4. Th is year local residents are being asked to ‘Reclaim the Lanes’ by targeting streets and laneways as well as parks and playgrounds, to prevent rubbish from entering storm drains and choking local ecosystems. Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna, said he hoped more people than ever would volunteer this Clean Up Australia Day. “Cleaner streets and parks and tidier lanes lead to healthier waterways and better communities. I know most of our residents love the Marrickville area and want the very best for themselves and their neighbours,” Cr Hanna said. Last year, 1,392 local Clean Up participants worked at 29 sites in Marrickville to collect a 920 kilograms of rubbish from parks, roadways and waterways. Th is year, you can join sites at Cahir Lane, Marrickville Road and Tempe Reserve, or register your own site. Register at www.cleanup.org.au by Sunday, February 19. Happy 2012 to everyone… my year is off to a fl ying start. 40 years ago I started at Lane Cove Public School and that day is still crystal clear for me. My little grey shorts, grey shirt, the smell of the classroom, my teacher and my classmates… memories that I treasure. Well, this week they were front and centre for me again as my wife and I walked our fi ve-year-old Allegra to school. The start of this education journey began about 6am, Allegra top

an association with
to toe in her brand new school uniform, pleading with us to get her to school as the sun was coming up! Well, that was a good sign… maybe our little treasure would sail into class, meet her new friends and embrace the thousands and thousands of classroom days ahead. She dragged us through the front gates and into her new world. Bingo! She soaked up the playground, her little locker, her buddies and my wife and I felt
immediate relief. A great, caring teacher the icing on the cake. Oh, and the classroom had that same smell about it, 40 years on. Of course we were not alone, as thousands of mums and dads trod down the emotional footpath of day one at school for their little one. In half an hour, we made friends with other parents as we shared a common bond. Day one went well for Allegra and I hope it went well for your little
treasures as well. Day two, well that was a diff erent story. Floods of tears and determined not to go. We got Allegra there and took comfort that all over the world, in rich and poor communities most, if not all, parents and kids felt the same way. And this is only the start of 13 years of learning... for children, AND mum and dad. Hope you can join me for Nine News, Sydney’s number one nightly at 6pm.

utdoor exercise equipment, ping pong tables and large works of art will soon appear in public areas in a new push by Marrickville Council to reduce vandalism. The Council has received more than $200,000 from the Department of Attorney General and Justice as part of a program to counter illegal graffi ti and the tagging of public spaces. The funding will be used to implement a range of measures including increasing the use of public spaces to ensure community surveillance, installing public artworks to remove blank canvasses for taggers and design and landscape improvements. The first places to receive the new measures will be Camperdown Oval, Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, McNeilly Park and Marrickville Railway Station. Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna, said the grant would help the Council implement a “multi-level approach” in its efforts to address the management issues of spaces prone to vandalism. arrickville MP and Shadow Education Minister, Carmel Tebbutt, said she has received various calls from parents of disabled children who were confused about school transport arrangements on Monday. It follows the revelation that the NSW Education Department failed to issue

contracts to transport providers for disabled children in time for the new school year. It is thought that 700 families may have been affected. “Parents from across NSW have contacted my office, distraught because they have had no notice that there child will not be picked up for school,” Ms Tebbutt said. Ms Tebbutt said many of the calls were from the
Newcastle and Hunter area, but she wasn’t aware of any local families aff ected by the incident. Under pressure all week, Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli, said the issues were being resolved and an inquiry has now been launched. “The department [on Tuesday] began offering higher pay rates to transport providers on runs of less than 30 kilometres,” he said.

arrickville Council is proposing to increase rates by an average of $1 per week for residents and $6.70 per week for businesses to pay for the new Marrickville Library. Council says in order to provide facilities the community wants an extra $23 million needs to be raised.
“The local community has said the new library should be iconic and a focal point and hub for the community,” a spokesperson said. “Without a special rate increase, Council will have insufficient resources to build the new library.” Business owner Fil Simms, who owns giftware shop 2 Spoilt on Marrickville Road, said the rate increase would hurt local businesses. “Don’t they understand
that businesses are already struggling as it is?” she said. Another local business owner supported the new library but said: “Surely slugging businesses… is not the way to go.” Council will be taking feedback on the proposal until the end of May. If there is enough support, Council will apply to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) for the special rate increase.

10,000 show support Community group will present GreenWay petition to NSW Parliament BY LOUISE BOURKE
C
ommunity group, Friends of the GreenWay, has reached the 10,000 petition signature target needed to force a debate on the GreenWay project in NSW Parliament. The group collected more than 400 signatures last week at the Australia Day celebrations at Enmore Park, enough to ensure the target was comfortably achieved. The next step will be to hand
the petition to local MPs later this month on the steps of Parliament, according to Friends of the GreenWay spokesperson, Jud Agius. “We plan to hand the petition to local members Carmel Tebbutt, Jamie Parker and Linda Burney on February 15,” Mr Agius said. “We will also invite the Liberal Member for Strathfi eld, Charles Casuscelli, to receive the petitions as well.” Jennifer Kent, who collected signatures on Australia Day, said the 10,000 signatures were from people around the inner west, not just from
the Marrickville and Leichhardt areas. “The signatures represent the length of the GreenWay – Marrickville, Lilyfield, Ashfi eld, Strathfi eld and so on,” Ms Kent said. “Th is is a real community effort.” The petition cites strong community support for the GreenWay project and the signifi cant benefits that the GreenWay and Light Rail Extension would provide for transport, open community space, and as a wildlife corridor for a healthier environment.

She managed to put out the fl ames herself before being assisted by her neighbours with her injuries. The fi re brigade attended the unit and contained the fire. A 34-year-old woman from Cronulla was issued a cannabis caution for the possession of the illegal drug last Friday, January 27. Marrickville Police stopped the woman in her vehicle on Smidmore Street in Marrickville, after seeing suspicious activity between the woman and another male. rayndler MP and Federal Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, has revealed he is “pessimistic” about a second airport for Sydney due to a lack of bipartisan support. In his address to the National Press Club in Canberra last week, Mr Albanese quoted new research that found NSW
would miss out on economic opportunities to the tune of $35 billion per year by 2060 and cost 70,000 jobs. “Th is is an unacceptable economic price to pay,” he said. “Spare landing and take-off slots are rare during the morning peak periods and pressures are already building in the afternoon.” Mr Albanese also used the speech to distance Labor from the Greens, saying it would be a mistake to think
Labor and Greens MPs held the same views on issues. “I don’t understand why anyone who is about progressive change in society wants to lobby the decision makers when you can be the decision makers,” he said. The message was later overshadowed by the revelation that Mr Albanese’s speech directly lifted sections of the 1995 Michael Douglas fi lm, ‘The American President’.

Put pork on your bun A brand new pork roll shop opens in Marrickville to the delight of locals BY LOUISE BOURKE

arrickville’s love aff air with the pork roll continues on with the recent opening of another vendor on Illawarra Road – the third on the shopping strip. Kingsies, which is so new that it does not even have a sign above the shop yet, is run by husband and wife team, Lucas Ly and Sreimom Srent. “At fi rst we wanted to open an
Aussie sandwich shop, but there are so many Vietnamese here and everyone loves pork rolls,” Ms Srent said. But the new shop owners are not bothered by the number of similar vendors in the Marrickville area. “There’s a lot of competition, yes, but we are one of the cheapest,” she said. Just up the road, the owners of the revered hole-in-the-wall Marrickville Pork Roll, which regularly has a
queue snaking up along Illawarra Road, say they have no problem with the competition. The addition of new vendors in Marrickville is certainly great news for locals, especially those who love the fresh bread rolls and its spicy fi llings. “More shops means more to choose from, so that’s a great thing,” said David Vo, who was tucking in to a pork roll when the Inner City Weekender spoke to him.

Conservation could include any of the following approaches: preservation, restoration, reconstruction, adaptation or interpretation. Entries close on Friday, March 2. ore than 125 Marrickville households have already taken advantage of a NSW Government scheme to reduce their energy costs. The Home Power Savings Program is open to local pensioners, veterans and families on lower incomes and can save households an average of $265 a year. “Th is free program is available at any time to low income earners, including

10 BUSINESS Business Finance Late payers
Is it affecting your business? Late-paying clients can put small business operators under tremendous fi nancial stress. That’s why it’s troubling to learn that waiting three months or more for payment is becoming the norm for many SMEs. The number of bills being paid late by Australian businesses has hit a oneyear high, rising almost 30 per cent in the December quarter, according to new research from credit analyst fi rm Dun & Bradstreet. Small businesses, with between one and fi ve employees, now wait an average of 51.3 days for payment. If this sounds familiar and you’re struggling to manage cash fl ow as a result, there are strategies to keep insolvency at bay. First, talk to your lender about fi nancial hardship if you’re struggling to meet repayments. Second, don’t let an overdue bill drag on – the longer it falls overdue, the harder it is to be paid. Remind customers of the consequences of late payment and if this fails you can threaten legal action with the assistance of a debt collection agency. Finally, safe guarding against late payers is vital. Do a thorough credit check on new customers – websites such as CreditorWatch. com.au.

Research reveals that over 82 per cent of people abandon their New Year’s resolution after the fi rst two weeks. And with weight loss topping the list, Contours Dulwich Hill has a program to help kickstart those good intentions! Beginning February 18, 3,000 women across Australia will take part in the Contours 6 Week Challenge, an easy to follow intense program of exercise and nutritional guidance. “Every year we are overwhelmed at the number of women who participate in the challenge and we have seen some absolutely fantastic results!” said Betty Concina, from Contours Dulwich Hill. “Last year’s winner was a big loser, with a massive 17 years off her starting BioAge, in addition to the loss of many centimetres and kilos.” As an added incentive this year, Contours has partnered with the McGrath Foundation and will aim to raise over $250,000 to help support Australian families experiencing breast cancer. If the Contours 6 Week Challenge raises the $250,000 target, this donation will allow the McGrath Foundation to place a McGrath Breast Care Nurse into a

April 21 to May 21
It’s a fairly mixed-up month, emotionally speaking, and you may have a suspicion about a lover or friend’s motives – be careful of how you handle the situation as whatever you say will come out wrong. On the career front, recognition will be forthcoming for past efforts and your future prospects will be considerably boosted. The Full Moon on the 7th indicates that tension is likely in your home and will be caused by older members of the family.
gemini
May 22 to June 21
Other people will be landing you with unwanted problems and you will have to put your foot down to prevent yourself from being pushed around or used. Venus from the 10th gives you the power to soldier on, in turn, this will put you in line for a raise. The Full Moon on the 7th throws your financial affairs into confusion, so check your facts. The New Moon on the 21st indicates that you will able to solve career problems to everyone’s satisfaction.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3 2012
June 22 to July 22
Guard against a tendency to be hasty and slow down whilst driving or operating machinery, as minor accidents and injuries are likely. You are in a rather rebellious mood and any restrictions to your actions will be met with hostility! Remember to use a measure of tact and diplomacy to get what you want out of others. From the 15th onwards is a good time to travel, or to take up an interest in spiritual matters. The Full Moon on the 7th warns you to be prepared for unexpected expenses.
leo
July 23 to August 23
You are being plagued with joint financial problems, so it may be a good idea to review the way you and your partner deal with money. The Full Moon falls directly in Leo on the 7th – be careful of being unreasonable as this will only lead to confrontations. Venus moves into your 9th house from the 10th filling you with vitality and enthusiasm. Your sporting interests and creative talents receive a welcome boost. The New Moon on the 21st is a positive time.
virgo
August 24 to September 23
The harsh aspect between Mars and the Sun warns against impulsive actions. These two fiery planets urge you into an aggressive mood that’s too hot to handle. The Full Moon on the 7th warns that any relationship or family difficulties will erupt into a furious quarrel if you don’t exercise selfcontrol. Tempers are too quick for comfort, so try to slow down and to think before you speak. The New Moon in Pisces on the 21st indicates that you will have the ability to impress others and to earn the respect.
Mars Retrograde Virgo - Be wary of losing your temper, being hypercritical and tactless. Everyone will be blurting out whatever is on their mind because of their impulse.
Francis A Bevan libra
September 24 to Oct 23
Your emotions will be close to the surface, making you feel terribly angry or anxious. The best way to deal with this is to focus on improving your fitness. A few early nights, and a readiness to give up bad habits will work wonders. The Full Moon on the 7th indicates an irritable atmosphere amongst loved ones, try to restrain your tongue, a tactless remark could have dire consequences!
scorpio
October 24 to Nov 22
Misunderstandings are likely with friends, the motto you need to remember is ‘you can’t please all of the people all of the time’. Certain associates are determined to bring you down a peg or two. Don’t let envy or jealousy upset you. The Full Moon on the 7th is a time to prove how efficient and confident you are by remaining serene when colleagues and clients get nasty. The New Moon on the 21st sees you in line for a bonus or pay rise if you play your cards right.
sagittarius
Nov 23 to Dec 21
Chaos is likely at work and remaining focused on the task at hand will be difficult. It seems whatever you tackle is plagued by confusion or set-backs. Prioritise your tasks and you can’t go wrong. The Full Moon on the 7th is not the ideal time to travel as delays of all types will hinder your progress. Also, a friend or colleague is determined to give you a rough ride, perhaps you have been inconsiderate. The New Moon (21st) sees you coming up with a bright idea.
capricorn
Dec 22 to January 20
aquarius
January 21 to Feb 19
You can be at one with your partner and children or you can choose to make life difficult for both. Your desire for control causes more problems than anything else in your relationships. You need to focus on creating compromises and outcomes where both of you win. The Full Moon on the 7th is not a day to break any laws or take chances with your money. The New Moon on the 21st falls in your communication sector, this sees your phone being red hot and your computer overloaded.
As Mars ploughs backwards through Virgo, one simmering spat could reach boiling point. You need to be careful of making mountains out of molehills! It’s better to settle this dispute sensibly. The Full Moon on the 7th sees complications in both your love life and business partnerships. If you are trying to clinch a deal you are better off postponing signing on the dotted line. It is always better to get it right than do it quickly. The New Moon on the 21st brings good news.
pisces
February 20 to March 20
Mars Retrograde is having a direct effect on your relationships, if you are convinced that one or two individuals no longer have a place in your life, ditch them and move on. However, be careful of souring really good relationships by being judgmental. The Full Moon on the 7th sees some unwelcome nasty gossip at work about a colleague and, as you hate injustice, you will make it clear that you don’t want to get involved. The New Moon on the 21st gives a boost to your self-confidence.

Staying Healthy Susan Garrad How do I keep motivated?
13
Start with the small things
Keeping Fit Q. My New Year’s resolutions to eat better and do more exercise are already falling by the wayside. Any advice on keeping motivated? Traditionally many people vow to make New Year’s goals centred on their health and happiness. Come March most forget that important goal. Why do these positive aspirations float away? Lack of time, stress, falling back into routines, a sense of failure – all common reasons. You want to make that health goal stick, but how do you do it? Change the language: When planning dinner or discussing plans, plan around your resolution. Example: “Let’s meet at 6.30pm after I get back from the gym” or “What vegetable should we have for dinner?” and “I will shower, meditate for five minutes and eat breakfast.” Habitually adding your resolution to daily planning makes it a reality, tell yourself verbally it is already part of your lifestyle and it will happen more
naturally. Become informed: Research your goals. Choose a few resources to consult – a few websites, maybe a book, and consult with a professional. We all know exercise is good, but what are the true benefits? How far is walking 10 blocks? Do you have time at lunch? Can the kids join? Visualise change with variety: It is known that after seeing that yellow sticky note a few times your brain adapts to acknowledging its presence and you ignore it. To curb this desensitisation, switch up the cues. Every month write that note on a diff erent coloured piece of paper and change the location. By doing this, you keep the resolution fresh. A lapse is not failure: Success with behaviour change does not happen magically. Realising your resolution comes from building habits. It’s a bigger picture than that time you missed the gym. Falling behind on going to the gym is not failure. Contact Susan Garrad on 9798 9322 or visit www. womenshealthnaturally.com.au.
David Stein Thanks to the people for commenting on the TV column, it’s great to hear the positive stories and ideas. Shane and Cornelia wrote they don’t even own a TV yet still manage to function. If you’re trying the week of no TV, write and let me know how it goes. Th is week I had two people come in who have been on the diet roller coaster including the ubiquitous shake diets. What is it with these shakes! They’re a form of VLCD – Very Low Calorie Diet. One of the clients said it was made by a pharmacist so thought it had to be healthy. I asked them did they know of some other pillars of healthy nutrition pharmacists have given us? I wouldn’t tell people which medications to have because I haven’t studied medicine. So should someone who hasn’t studied nutrition start giving diet advice? If you look what’s actually in them it’s basically some powdered milk (whey) or possibly soy with some sugar and a vitamin tablet crushed in. Sometimes there is a
magical ingredient for marketing, like some berry extract to make you feel full or maybe the extract of some Amazonian butterfl y tears that ‘studies have shown’ help lose weight. Lots of the weight you lose on a VLCD diet is muscle mass. The more muscle you have the more calories you burn, even at rest! Why do you think shake diets don’t encourage doing any weight training or check fat percentage loss? They only check overall weight loss. So when you lose 10kgs you think I don’t need the shakes, you
go back to eating what you’re used to, but now have less muscle to burn the calories up, so you put the weight back on quicker and maybe even more than you started at. Pour that coloured, processed powder out on a plate next to a green organic salad with some bright red tomatoes chopped in – even my two-year-old will pick the nutritionally complete one. I like to say, you get healthy to lose weight, not lose weight to get healthy. Email david@fitec.com.au or visit www.fitec.com.au.

ocal photographers are invited to creatively capture Marrickville’s built environment and snap up a prize in the 2012 Marrickville Urban Photography Competition. Marrickville Council is encouraging photographers of all ages and abilities to submit photos about Marrickville’s urban landscape. Images should feature the older attributes of the built environment, preferably before the 1960s. The subject matter should broadly fit into this year’s National Trust Heritage theme, ‘Innovation and Invention’. Mayor of Marrickville, Morris Hanna, said the competition was a great way to discover and celebrate the area’s unique urban landscape. Last year’s winner, Francis Johns, juxtaposed remnant facades of shops awaiting development along Marrickville Road against a landmark steeple in his

“The view of the steeple is now mostly obscured by the development so I'm glad I have a record of what was revealed.” Visit the Council website for details.

SPECTACLE OF COLOUR
W
hat better way to celebrate the Year of the Dragon than at the Chinese New Year Festival Dragon Boat Races at Darling Harbour? The 12-metre long boats will take to the Harbour this weekend with teams from various organisations competing for the honour of winning the prestigious event. Each Dragon Boat is
large enough to seat 20 people with a sweep to steer and a drummer pounding loudly above the thrashing of the oars. It’s a great spectacle of colour, noise and movement and will entertain the whole family. Racing is a cultural phenomenon of China, with a long history dating back to the Zhou Dynasty (770BC to 256BC).
A symbol of good fortune and a sign of intense power, these mythical beasts appear to surge through the water. The long boats are decorated to feature the head and tail of a dragon. The Dragon Boat Races run from 8am to 5pm this weekend. For more information, visit www. sydneychinesenewyear.com or phone 9265 9333.

Volvo steps up in battle of the hybrids
V
olvo Car Corporation has unveiled its XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept at the North American International Auto Show, which features a new benchmark in hybrid technology. “No other manufacturer delivers fuel economy and electrical range on this level in a capable performance car with a total of 350 horsepower (257 kW),” said Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO, Volvo Car
Corporation. “The beauty with this plug-in hybrid technology is that you can keep all the power and capacity of your present car, combined with an even better range. “The XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept gives you up to 35 miles all-electric range (56 km according to the U.S certification driving cycle). Captain Benji
Rugby League All Stars match kicks off on Saturday
The all-female Newtown Breakaways in action last season.
Call for recruits
All-female AFL team is on the search for more players

he all-female Newtown Breakaways AFL team is on the lookout for new talent in 2012, with many of the club’s star players moving on. The team, which has won premierships from 2002-05 and 2009-10 in the Sydney Women’s AFL, is looking to build on a strong 2011 performance this season. No previous playing experience is required,
according to team member Monique Boulous, just lots of courage and enthusiasm. “Footy is about having a go and anyone prepared to give it their all will always be welcome at the Newtown Breakaways,” she said. Boulous joined the team during the 2011 season, and says there’s a certain satisfaction involved in taking a fantastic mark or being an assist to a goal
scored. “Speaking as a new recruit last year, AFL encompasses everything I personally wanted in a sport. I’ve never played a sport that I have gained so much enjoyment from and where camaraderie is so strong,” she said. The Breakaways are holding an open day for AFL recruits on Saturday, February 4 from 12pm at Sydney Park.
ests Tigers will be represented by Kiwi internationals Benji Marshall and Adam Blair in the 2012 Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars match at Skilled Park tomorrow, Saturday, February 4. In a game that has become one of the most anticipated fi xtures of the NRL calendar, Marshall and Blair will take on the Indigenous All Stars team led by captain,
Johnathan Thurston. As the NRL All Stars captain, Marshall was an automatic selection alongside Storm hooker Cameron Smith and two ‘coach’s picks’ by Wayne Bennett in the 20man squad. Marshall will play fi veeighth with Blair being named as an interchange player. Wests Tigers said the selection of Blair already shows how popular the new
player is with supporters. The public were given the chance to choose only one player from each of the 16 NRL clubs from a 64-man shortlist. Saturday’s winning team will take home the Arthur Beetson Trophy, named after the late league legend and fi rst Aboriginal man to captain Australia in any sport. He passed away last year.
