O
ne man’s mission to start a local chapter of Gamblers Anonymous (GA) is proving to be more diffi cult than he fi rst thought. Graham, a former gambling addict who was encouraged to attend his first GA meeting by the late Father Christopher Sheehy, has been contacting local councils to try to secure a venue for meetings but has been met with bureaucracy and red tape. One inner west council quoted him $105 to hire a room for one hour on a Saturday night, a day of the week when chronic gamblers are most vulnerable to their addiction. “Every day is a bad day for an uncontrollable gambler, but Saturday is so horrible,” Graham said. “That’s why I want to have the meeting then.” “I’m happy to make a donation to use a venue but people with gambling problems can’t [aff ord] that.” Marrickville Council quoted Graham $18 per hour for room hire, despite the fact they are providing a venue to another GA group without charge. A Council representative told Graham the group would have to start paying for the venue in the new fi nancial year. But Graham is at a loss as to why local councils won’t waive fees to support a local chapter of the community support network. “It’s a self-help organisation, and many of their rate payers have gambling issues,” he said. “I’ve been to GA meetings where there are solicitors and accountants. It can aff ect anyone.” If you know of a venue, contact Louise. Bourke@innercityweekender.com.au.

Respected political pundit Laurie Oakes was talking about how everyone is complaining about the Australian economy and how tough we are doing. He pointed out that in the grand scheme of things, we currently have one of, if not the strongest economies in the world. Yet all we do is moan and groan. Some people may be familiar with the term schadenfreude – it is a German word that loosely equates to taking delight in the misfortune of others.
It’s a surprise we don’t have a word for it, because we practice it quite a lot here in Australia. I don’t envy many things about the USA, but their eternal optimism is something I think is quite admirable. It’s something I’d like to see us adopt a bit more of here. Back in the old days of scorching summers, we used to complain that everyone’s gardens and front lawns died. Now let’s enjoy the fact that our countryside is bright green again.

pretty good at whinging full-stop. Last weekend the sun came out and made Saturday pretty spectacular. I was playing lawn bowls with friends, and all we did was complain about the fact it was way too hot. It got me thinking about how the grass is always greener on the other side, and that really, no one is ever happy with their lot in life. There was another example on television on Wednesday morning.

arrickville and surrounding suburbs are being talked-up as Sydney’s property ‘hot spots’ for 2012, with median property values in the area rising by 6.9 per cent over the past two years. Property researcher, Oded Reuveni Etzioni from PRDnationwide, has flagged Marrickville as an area in increasingly strong demand, with its proximity to the city a big drawcard. “Th is year will be one where demand will increase for well-located properties in the inner and middle ring of Sydney,” he said. Marrickville, Dulwich Hill and Tempe will become an attractive option for home buyers this year based on population growth, infrastructure and employment opportunities, according to Mr Reuveni Etzioni. Ron Alexander, from LJ Hooker Marrickville, agrees that Marrickville property is in demand, estimating the growth fi gure is currently between five to eight per cent. “We’re seeing a lot of younger people, especially from the eastern suburbs and the lower north shore, looking at properties in the area,” he said. Mr Alexander said the “café culture” and the proximity to the city were drawing a new demographic of buyers.

A NEW LIBRARY FOR MARRICKVILLE Marrickville Council is now seeking comment on concept designs for a new Marrickville Library, and on a proposed special rate variation to fund its construction. Council is currently developing plans for a New Marrickville Library to be constructed on the old Marrickville Hospital site on the corner of Livingstone and Marrickville Roads. Three architectural fi rms were invited by Council to submit concept designs. Residents are invited to provide feedback on the designs so as to incorporate the local community’s views into this decision-making process. Council is also asking for community feedback on the proposal to increase rates above the normal annual increase in order to pay for the New Library.

An accident between a car and motorcycle caused major traffic delays on Tuesday.
Crash causes chaos Traffic was at a standstill on Tuesday after car and bike collided BY LOUISE BOURKE
T
raffic came to a standstill around Newtown and Enmore on Tuesday morning after an accident between a car and motorcycle blocked one citybound lane of King Street at Church Street. The extensive delays for motorists during the busy peak hour were felt
around the area, with traffic backed up as far as Addison Road in Marrickville and Crystal Street in Petersham. The 32-year-old female motorcyclist from Victoria sustained a broken leg and was taken to RPA Hospital in a stable condition for surgery. Th e driver of the car was uninjured. Frustrated commuters took to twitter, many unsure of what was
causing the hold-up. “Does anyone know what’s going on with traffic around Marrickville/ Enmore/Newtown today? Worst ever. I got off the bus and walked. In thongs,” tweeted @Grovey75. “Traffic still banked up to bottom of Enmore Rd due to king street accident in Newtown almost three hours ago! Chaos,” said @elisedavidson. Police are still investigating.
Police are urging local residents to be vigilant with their mail after two people were caught stealing mail in Williams Parade, Dulwich Hill on Sunday, February 5. Officers attached to Marrickville Local Area Command attended and arrested a man and woman nearby. urfi ng old mattresses on the Cooks River until they sank is just one of the many adventures legendary Australian actor Grahame Bond recalls of growing up in Marrickville in the 1940’s and 50’s. “My friend Garry and I would go down to the river and fi nd ourselves an old kapok mattress that had
been dumped there,” he said. “We’d sail along as far as we could go, pretending to be Errol Flynn.” Mr Bond is most famous for entertaining Australia as the loveable Aunty Jack in the 1970’s TV series. As a boy, he lived just one street back from the Marrickville Golf Course and was a student at Marrickville West Primary School. “I have very fond memories of that time, in
fact I was invited back to Marrickville West for a speech day a few years ago,” he told the Inner City Weekender. “Marrickville today is a great community, it’s wonderful.” Grahame Bond will return to his old stomping ground for one night to talk about his new book, ‘Jack of All Trades – Mistress of One’, at the Marrickville Golf, Sporting and Community Club on Thursday, March 1.

mall stations with less than 2,000 passengers a day, including Macdonaldtown in the inner west, may be in the fi ring line as part of the State Government’s review of RailCorp. The review, which was announced by the Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian, last week, will look into
options to reduce the $3.7 billion per year operating cost across the rail network. Member for Marrickville, Carmel Tebbutt, has slammed the idea that small stations like Macdonaldtown may be forced to operate without staff and called on the government to rule out shedding frontline services. “Th is is completely unacceptable – station staff provide security, assist the disabled and elderly hopping
on and off trains and act as a deterrent to vandalism and graffiti,” Ms Tebbutt said. “Having visible staff at stations is absolutely vital to ensure our rail lines remain safe and secure.” The Transport Minister said she would not speculate on what the review’s potential fi ndings. “We are at the start of an intensive process which will give us a more efficient railway,” she said.

New school year offers lessons in healthy eating.
Appetizing lunchbox Important lessons to be learnt from a healthy lunchbox, experts say
W
ith thousands of children now back at school, the most important lesson they can learn about living a healthy life can be found in their lunchboxes, a local health expert says. Sydney Local Health District Director Community Nutrition, Sue Amanatidis, said it was important that good nutritional habits were established early in life to ensure lasting, long-term health benefits. “Children who have an unhealthy
weight are at a greater risk of having an unhealthy weight in adulthood and this of course is a major risk factor for a range of common diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer,” she said. “Raising a child on a varied diet of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and cereals, fish, lean meat, legumes, low fat dairy and healthy oils is the ideal way to set them on the right path to healthy eating.” Because a child can consume
up to half of their daily calories at school, health experts are reminding parents that kids need two servings of fruit and five servings of vegetables each day. Some ideas for uninspired parents include adding lettuce, celery and grated carrot to sandwiches, cut up fruit or homemade muffi ns with dried fruit, carrot or pumpkin. Do you have healthy lunchbox ideas? Email Louise.Bourke@ innercityweekender.com.au.

Among wide ranging reform proposals the draft Plan proposes cutting red tape, encourages more Council partnerships and resource sharing, and reviewing the rate-pegging system and funding models for councils. Council must submit any comments on the draft plan by Wednesday, February 15, so there are only a few more days for residents and ratepayers to provide their comments. Marrickville Council wants to make Johnson Park in Dulwich Hill a public reserve.
Park land debacle Council discovers it doesn t own bulk of Dulwich Hill park BY LOUISE BOURKE

a r r i c k v i l l e Councillors have voted to approach the State Government to secure ownership of Johnson Park as public reserve. It follows the revelation that the Dulwich Hill park, which Marrickville Council has always managed, is in fact Crown land. Transport for NSW wrote
to the Council earlier this year to request the use of part of the park to build the inner west light rail extension. After checking its records, Council discovered it didn’t actually own the bulk of the land. As well as applying for the park to be vested as public reserve under sections 76 and 77 of the Crown Lands Act, Councillors also resolved to advise Transport for NSW to approach the Crown about
licensing and the request for sale. Speaking at a Council meeting on Tuesday night, Councillor Peter Olive said: “All Councillors want to see the light rail extension go ahead and expedited as soon as possible”. Cr Olive said the Council wanted the State Government to take appropriate action and to see the GreenWay built in conjunction with the light rail.

What type of metering do you have? Saving energy The cost of residential electricity is set to soar, with customers in the Energy Australia area experiencing a predicted 10 per cent increase on July 1, 2012 and a whopping 42 per cent increase in nominal terms for NSW by 2012-2014! Over the next few weeks, we will try and reduce your power consumption and costs to help combat these rises. First and foremost, check what type of metering you have. For the old ‘spinning-disc’ type of meter, all electricity costs the same throughout the day (until you surpass a certain amount – your quota). Th e newer alternative is time-of-use metering (PowerSmart for EA customers) which

means that the electricity price will be different depending on when you use it. The three brackets are off-peak, shoulder and on-peak. Just by altering your daily routine, such as using major appliances like pool pumps, driers or dishwashers during offpeak hours instead of peak hours, you can save more than 30 cents per kWh, which translates to hundreds per year! Check your electricity provider for the details of their time-of-use metering. If their time period suits you, or if you could adapt to it, then the new arrangement could be more cost effective than the old system. It is not for everyone, but can help a lot of people. NSW Fair Trading listed housing construction as one of the most complained about services.
B
eware: household electrical and whitegoods, and housing construction are the most complained about services, according to NSW Fair Trading. In 2011, Fair Trading received more than 42,500 complaints with 2,611 about electrical, gas and whitegoods and a further 2,476 complaints about problems with housing construction or renovations.
Fair Trading Minister, Anthony Roberts, said research showed Australians have long been dissatisfied with outcomes when faced with defective white goods, electronic goods and mobile phones in particular. “Instead of providing redress required by law, some retailers have shirked their obligations and left consumers to sort out the problem on their own and at their own expense,” he said.
Also ranking in the top 10 are used cars and motorcycles, automotive repairs, travel and accommodation. Disruptions to the travel industry in 2011 from natural disasters and industrial problems shifted travel and tourism complaints from number six in 2010 to number four in 2011. But computer and hardware suppliers, as well as professional services have cleaned up their acts.

BUSINESS 11 Business Finance Need cash?
Tips to get you across the line Need a cash injection for your small business this year? Filling in the loan application may be relatively straight forward. But there are a number of other variables that will determine whether or not you’re successful in your application, so here are my tips: First, know what you’re worth. Whether you’re a growing fi rm with a stable of staff and equipment, or a smaller start-up with just a few assets, it’s important to be honest about the value of your business. Second, a business loan is more likely to be approved if you can show that you have a clear direction for your company and can communicate that in a written, logical manner. Your business plan should outline your profit and loss and cashfl ow forecasts. Th ird, a lender will want to know how soon they will be repaid, also known as an exit strategy, and you’d be wise to offer more than one way out of debt. The fi rst should be the traditional repayment schedule of principal and interest, while a second option may include sale of the business or assets, for instance. Finally, understand that the minor details are often most important when you’re asking a lender to hand over money – so keeping paperwork up to date and responding to queries promptly can go a long way.

This week’s Full Moon is bringing you face to face with any worries that are currently nagging away at you, and it is time to do something constructive about them. Communication glitches are likely for a few weeks, so be wary as not everybody is going to be straight forward with you and deception is in the air. You need time for yourself especially after all the frantic times of the holiday season!

Your opinion of a friend could go through a sea change during the next two weeks, altering the dynamics of your relationship. You might see a new side to them that you aren’t entirely happy about and you may need to clear away certain misunderstandings between you and start with a clean slate. Whatever is wrong, it’s important that you face the situation head on and try not to brood on matters.

Problems and difficulties are about to manifest either in your career or to do with your goals and long-term objectives and matters will not be easily solved. Your energy levels aren’t very high, you need to look after your health and pace yourself, as almost everything will feel like too much effort. You’re also very sensitive at the moment and could easily feel other people are either looking down their noses at you or giving you the cold shoulder. Try not to let your sensitivities rule, instead use that wonderful witty sense of humour that you are famous for.
The Full Moon is affecting your relationships during the next few weeks. This is your cue to take action over any business or personal partnerships that you aren’t happy about. This means you will have to face certain realities in your connection and meet problems head on. It may also indicate that certain people no longer belong in your life. Be careful of jealousy and possessiveness invading your life.

Staying Healthy
Susan Garrad
Overcoming sugar cravings Q. I really battle with sugar cravings, particularly mid afternoon. Any tips on overcoming them? Sweet is the fi rst taste humans prefer from birth. So, while it seems that our craving for sweet foods may be hardwired into our DNA, it is possible to keep these cravings in check. Here are fi ve simple strategies you can use to help overcome your sugar cravings: • Eat regularly: Sugar is the brain’s only source of energy, so when we become overly hungry or skip meals, sugar cravings are the brain’s way of letting us know it needs energy. Try planning ahead to include healthy snacks into your daily eating plan. • Choose foods high in fi bre such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables: Foods high in fi bre digest slower, so you feel fuller for longer. Refi ned carbohydrates such as lollies, biscuits, chocolate and soft drink may give you a short-term energy
boost, but you’ll quickly feel sluggish and end up craving more sugar. • Balance your meals and snacks with good sources of protein or healthy fats: Just like fi bre, protein and fats are digested more slowly and will keep you satisfied throughout the day. Nuts and nut butters, avocadoes, beans, eggs and lean meats are all excellent sources of proteins or fats. • Cut back on caff eine: Cutting out caff eine completely may be unrealistic, so just try reducing your intake to one cup in the morning. • Slow down and manage your stress: Eating carbohydrates releases endorphins and can impact the production of serotonin, the feel-good brain chemical that can calm and relax us. During times of high stress our sugar cravings may be triggered by our emotional needs. Just what is health?
Keeping Fit David Stein Last week on the topic of shake diets I asked what other ‘nutrition’ products have come from pharmacists, some of you knew it; Coca Cola and Pepsi were two others. Th is week I have spoken to Victor Tuballa and he wrote a letter on our question, what makes us fi t and healthy? He is a naturopath and has worked with many clients working on his own answer. What is health? “I believe that health is where a person’s quality of life is enhanced when they’re free of illness, injuries and pain. Unfortunately the trend for western cultures is increasing illness and poor health. Th e good news is that optimum health is readily achievable. Can we increase our chances of avoiding cancer and cardiovascular disease just by proper eating and an active lifestyle? Absolutely! Th ere are groups of people, that have been extensively studied, who are not sharing the trend of chronic disease. In some instances, words for diseases, such as cancer, don’t even exist in their respective languages? Let’s look at three examples:
The Hunza people live in the Hunza Valley, located in the Himalayan ranges. Th eir life expectancy has been documented at around 100-110 years. No cancer, cardiovascular disease or obesity issues. A large part of their diet consists of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and seeds. Regular walks of distances greater than 10 kilometres in mountainous terrain are commonplace. There is a large group of Seventh-Day Adventists living in an area of California known as Loma Linda who were studied over a 30 year period . Th eir life
expectancy is between 9-11 years longer than an average American. Their diet is taken directly from the Bible, which is mainly plant-based such as legumes, seeds and green vegetables. We can learn from these people in order to achieve optimum health. Here’s a start; 1.Physical activity. Make sure you exercise enough to break a sweat. 2. A diet that is at least 80 per cent plant-based. Limit meat to one meal per day. 3. Drink two litres of fl uid daily for better hydration.” Victor Tuballa 0412 486 925.

NEW HUBS ON THE FRINGE
T
he Sydney Fringe will hit the streets again this September, with organisers looking to engage even more of the city’s streets by expanding the festival further west. While the original precincts of ‘Fringe Central’ – the inner west, inner east, the CBD and club Five Eliza in Newtown – will remain, artists from outside these areas can set up their own event to create new ‘hubs’ of creativity. “Wherever you are in this great city, you can put an event on for Sydney Fringe 2012,” said Festival Director, Richard Hull. “Let your imagination run wild, be adventurous, ruffle a few feathers, do something diff erent! It’s easy to participate.” Fringe is an opportunity for artists to be creative in the areas where they live and offers a platform to showcase artists’ talents as part of NSW’s largest alternative visual and performing arts festival.
The Mardi Gras Fair Day promises to be a great day out.

STRIKING ARTWORK
A
new series of artworks have been wrapped around the Newtown Art Seat, the unique gallery space in Newtown Town Square. The new artwork, ‘Transcendant Flesh – Sequential Selves’, was created by Sydney-based conceptual artist, Grace Kingston. The works focus on the limits of flesh and mirrors the process of
body modifi cation and the associated pain involved. Ms Kingston created the works by pressing models with modifi cations against stretched clear latex. The resulting images show the entire figure become suggestive of a sub-dermal implant, body jewellery that is placed under the skin. The artwork is wrapped around the cylinder of the Art Seat, a dramatic 2.8
metre structure, and lit at night by LED strip lighting. Th is is the second artwork to feature in this dynamic space. Mayor of Marrickville, Morris Hanna, said the striking artwork was sure to get people talking. “The Art Seat is an ideal space for young, emerging artists to exhibit works that cross traditional artistic boundaries,” Cr Hanna said.

Despite a penalty shoot-out loss, local women s futsal team have set a high benchmark
T
he inner-west’s own Sydney Futsal Club women’s team went down to minor premiers Sutherland Shire Futsal on Saturday in a close match decided in the end by penalties. After a scoreless fi rst half, the second half saw Sutherland come out strong to claim a goal in the fi rst two minutes of play. Several of Sydney’s attempts to counter were unsuccessful and after a Sydney timeout with 10 minutes and 43 seconds to go, the team managed to come back in the dying minutes when Maniso Micheal put the ball into Sutherland’s net for the equaliser. The draw resulted in a tense penalty shoot-out to determine the winner, and after some well-matched competition, Sutherland were too strong and claimed victory at 6-5. It brings the Sydney club’s strong season to a close, with a club spokesman saying the year was a great ride for club, the players and the spectators. “Sydney Futsal Club’s women not only did the club proud but set the benchmark. A monumental game, going down in penalties – SFC found their heart and soul!” he said. The Sutherland Shire team will now go on to meet Phoenix Futsal in this weekend’s women’s fi nal.
Contours will start a 6 week challenge.

ontours Dulwich Hill is about to launch a program to help kick-start your New Year’s good intentions to get fit and help others. Beginning February 18, 3,000 women across Australia will take part in the Contours 6 Week Challenge, an easy to follow intense program of exercise and nutritional guidance. “Every year we are overwhelmed at the number of women who participate in the challenge and we have seen some absolutely fantastic results,” said Betty Concina, from Contours Dulwich Hill. “Last year’s winner was a big loser, with a massive 17 years off her starting BioAge, in addition to the loss of many centimetres and kilos.” As an added incentive this year, Contours has partnered with the McGrath Foundation and will aim to raise over $250,000 to help support Australian families experiencing breast cancer.
