Petition tabled
NSW Parliament will debate reinstating the GreenWay BY LOUISE BOURKE
I
nner west MPs, local mayors and community group Friends of the GreenWay tabled a 10,500 signature petition in NSW Parliament on Wednesday, demanding the scrapped GreenWay project be reinstated. Speaking on the steps of Parliament, Marrickville MP, Carmel Tebbutt, said the residents of the inner west had delivered a strong message to the State Government to build the transport corridor. “The GreenWay makes sense from a transport perspective, from an environmental perspective and from a recreational perspective,” she said. “Mr O’Farrell and his Transport Minister need to look to the future and step up to the challenge of improving transport in the inner west.” The Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian, was invited to receive the petition but declined to attend. Friends of the GreenWay’s Jud Agius thanked the assembled supporters and called on the government to give Sydney a piece of infrastructure it could be proud of. “It is critical that the government puts the funds for the GreenWay project back into the budget,” he said. The decision to scrap the GreenWay was made following a review that projected costs at $37 million instead of $30 million as estimated by the previous government, according to Ms Berejiklian.

Like half of Australia, I let out a big, loud, painful groan this week. A new weight landed on my shoulders. And it’s a weight that invariably seems to be getting heavier. The burden is that of our banks – deciding yet again to bump up mortgage rates. It’s greedy. Th ere is simply no other way to describe it. How about the nerve of the Commonwealth Bank, bumping up its interest rates one day, and then later in the week announcing a record half year profit of $3.57 billion. Break that down, and they are making $20 million every day of the year. Yet apparently that’s not enough
THE INNER CITY WEEKENDER
an association with – they need to bleed me and every other one of their home loan clients out of more of our hard earned money. But what can you do? Every major bank this week decided that they needed to hike interest rates, despite the Reserve Bank not moving a muscle. They justify it with confusing statements like “the cost of money has become more expensive”. That was seriously a statement this week made by a banking executive... if anyone can actually figure out what on earth that means, then please give me a call. In my line of work, we often look at how you can minimise your home
loan – the most common answer in those stories is by moving to a credit union or smaller broker. But understandably people are worried about leaving big reliable banks. Everyone has seen what’s happened with a number of fi nancial institutions in the United States going broke. So what are we supposed to do as everything gets more expensive, but we’re not getting any richer? Well how about the government does something! I’m not suggesting communist style handouts and equal payments for everyone across the board, but there comes a time when Wayne Swan has to stand up for every mortgage holder out there.

Progress on station upgrade

Newtown Railway Station upgrades are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year An expanded entrance, a new walkway and better access to platforms and ticketing facilities. That's what is on the cards after the completion of work at Newtown Railway Station. BY LOUISE BOURKE
C
ommuters will have noticed some progress on the building works at and around Newtown Railway Station as the refurbishment works continue. As part of the Phase 3 work, a new lift will be installed this month as well as internal fitouts, roofing and painting works, according to CityRail. A concrete slab has also been laid over the site of an old kebab shop to provide the foundation for a large concourse to accommodate the growing foot traffi c. Local resident, Jack Peters, who catches the train from Newtown to the city for work, told the Inner City Weekender it was good to see progress being made. “You can see improvements on the station building now,” he said. “It’s nice to see things happening when you’re catching the train around the building work all the time.” The refurbishment of the station, which sees 10,000 people pass through it each day, began in May 2010 and is expected to be completed at the end of this year. When completed, the station will have an expanded entrance, a new walkway and better access to platforms and ticketing facilities.

Residents voice concerns over Metro expansion proposal BY LOUISE BOURKE
L
ocal residents, M a r r i c k v i l l e Councillors and Chamber of Commerce representatives pleaded with the Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) on Monday to reject the Marrickville Metro expansion proposal. The chief concerns were the projected increase in
traffic levels, noise pollution, the impact upon existing shopping strips and a lack of community consultation. Councillor Victor Macri argued the expansion fl ew in the face of Council’s development strategy, citing the Local Environment Plan (LEP) that was gazetted on December 12 last year. “The only comprehensive document we have is the LEP,” he said. “For it to be compromised so early would
be tragic.” Local resident, Nino Lo Giudice, who lives near the Metro with his young family, said the community felt sidelined by the process. “... it’s purely for the owners to make a profit,” he said. The PAC chair, Dr Neil Shepherd, denied a suggestion made by one speaker that the decision to approve the Metro expansion had already made.

group of six IKEA staff from across Australia have visited the small community of Prey Veng in Cambodia to see fi rsthand how their fundraising efforts are assisting local children gain better access to education. The staff members are company ‘Ambassadors’ who are working in partnership with UNCIEF to double the number of children attending pre-school in the village by
2015. Marcia Orr, from IKEA Tempe, said she was struck by how the children responded to their learning environment, which was implemented locally. “I was impressed by the fact that instead of pushing a fi rst world agenda, [the program] worked in a way that was culturally sensitive and appropriate to the needs of the country,” Ms Orr said. The visiting IKEA group
engaged with the students in class and during their play time, whilst learning about the curriculum, resource materials and training provided to their school teachers. The CEO of UNICEF, Dr Norman Gillespie, said educating children through these programs is what builds stronger communities. “Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty,” Dr Gillespie said.

Tears of frustration
Prime Minister visits inner west to listen to concerns about disability support BY LOUISE BOURKE
I
t was an emotional day for families coping with disability when they met with the Prime Minister in the inner west last Friday. Julia Gillard listened to the families at the FRANS disability service centre in Croydon speak about the lack of support available to them to care for their loved ones. Ms Gillard was joined by Community Services Minister,
Jenny Macklin, and the Member for Grayndler, Anthony Albanese. Tears were shed throughout the often heated discussion, with the Prime Minister talking about a proposed National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to provide families with access to appropriate care and support. “It’s been good to have these discussions today,” Ms Gillard said. “Clearly there’s a lot of pain around, some frustration and all of that’s really understandable.
“We’ve been investing to improve disability services and we’re going to keep doing that, but ultimately we need to change the system so that all Australians, no matter how they acquire their disability, can look forward to getting appropriate care and support.” Community Services Minister, Jenny Macklin, said a fundamental rethink of how to fi nance such a scheme would be required to bring the diff erent state models together into a national service.

Bookings are essential as places are limited. To book, call Council on 9335 2222. Th e venue for the first workshop will be confi rmed on booking. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ➤ There’s still time to enter the 2012 Marrickville Medal for Conservation, which celebrates built conservation works that contribute to the understanding and preservation of the area’s cultural and architectural heritage. The award is open to all building works, completed in the preceding three years, which can be described as having positive conservation outcomes. Conservation could include any of the following approaches: preservation, restoration, reconstruction, adaptation or interpretation. Entries close on Friday, March 2.

Let’s examine how to save on appliances and lighting electricity usage. Lighting: 9 per cent of your home usage. So change those 50W halogen downlights! A 35W IRC downlights produce an identical lighting feel but use less power. Or try fluorescent counterparts, maybe LED ones as well (there are some cheap LEDs out there). While you are at it, replace those old incandescent globes, too. Incandescent is being phased out by the government and fl orescent has been widely accepted as the energy saving alternative. Kitchen appliances: 9 per cent, lifestyle appliances: 4 per cent. Before purchasing an appliance like a big plasma television or airconditioner, check their energy rating fi rst (and water rating for laundry appliances). Th ey may seem a bit more expensive, but just slow down and calculate how much money you can save over the long run fi rst! (Government websites provide simple calculators for you). As for your kitchen, try and get an induction stove (or gas) rather than electric. Also observing simple tips, like don’t boil more water than you need, could go a long way. Fridge: 7 per cent (all by itself!) It’s important to see why it might be beneficial to pick a more expensive
Jeff Wang
but energy efficient model. Before your purchase, measure the space you have and make sure you have enough space on the top and sides to keep it well ventilated. If the back of the fridge cannot be cooled, then it will have to run even harder to cool things down. Jeff Wang runs Greenforce Energy in Marrickville. Phone: 9557 1648.

BUSINESS 11 Business Finance Protection
Covering your number one asset When it comes to protecting our assets many of us pay big money to insure valuable material belongings, shelling out thousands of dollars each year for premiums to cover our cars, homes and contents. Too many Australians neglect to cover their number one incomeproducing asset – themselves! Income protection insurance is an increasingly common product for many people in business, but it doesn’t always suit small business owners. There’s another type of insurance worth considering if you run a small business, it’s known as ‘key person insurance’ or ‘key man insurance’, depending on the provider. As the name suggests, this form of insurance covers the business owner or the most important person for the continuity of the business and includes income protection and life insurance. When you consider that if a small business owner can’t work that their income dries up, income protection insurance and life insurance are so important. Without this cover the ramifications can be disastrous, particularly if you have the added burden of paying business loans, overdrafts, credit cards, suppliers and staff , to name just a few. Given that this insurance is tax deductible, it’s surprising that more SMEs don’t have it.

HOROSCOPES www.francisbevan.com aries March 21 to April 20
As Mercury is opposite your ruling planet misunderstandings are likely and you’ll waste no time in telling someone if they have offended you in any way, and you won’t mince your words either. If you need to get something off your chest, make sure that you don’t secretly look for an excuse to have a row. It’s vitally important to be assertive and not provocative.

April 21 to May 21
Something from the past is being stirred up which is making you feel vaguely uneasy. But instead of sweeping these feelings back under the carpet, do your best to bring them to the surface and then resolve them once and for all. If you feel that you need help with this you could always talk to someone who inspires total trust and confidence within you. There’s always someone like that waiting for your call. May 22 to June 21
Difficult issues with friendships and co-workers are likely and others may accuse you of having a sense of humour failure but the truth is you are simply taking something very seriously. Finding a balance between your thoughts and emotions will prove challenging and you could end up swinging from either end of the emotional spectrum. Try to remain aware of this when others get overly demanding.
cancer
June 22 to July 22
You need to be careful of how you deal with certain colleagues or clients. You need to focus on honesty and clarity in your communication with others. You’re ready to speak your mind, but remember that truth without compassion can come across as wounding and judgemental. Although certain people may not appear sensitive, you know only too well that this can often be a protection against being hurt!
leo
July 23 to August 23
If you have travel plans during the next few weeks be certain to double check all arrangements as delays are likely. If you have a long car journey to take be certain to check the petrol gauge before you set out to avoid running out of fuel in the most inconvenient places. Also self-doubt will plague you and whatever is undermining you isn’t going to be easily shaken off. Talking through your fears with someone you trust will help to get the situation into better perspective.
virgo
August 24 to September 23
Money is likely to be a concern and this is not an ideal time to apply for a loan as there is a good chance of refusal. Be certain not to break any laws as you are bound to get caught! If you are dealing with anything of a legal nature then brick walls are likely to appear where you thought you had a clear run. If you need to sign any official papers be certain to read them twice before putting your signature to them as mistakes are likely.

Mercury In Pisces Opposes Mars February 15th to April 5th. Be Prepared for a frustrating few weeks!
Francis A Bevan libra
September 24 to Oct 23
Misunderstandings are likely either at home or at work as you are feeling very single-minded. The best cure is prevention, so next time you feel yourself getting wound up, find some physical outlet to help diffuse the stress. It’s also helpful to recognise the triggers that set you off so that you can train yourself not to react to them in the same way. A little bit of forethought will do wonders!
scorpio
October 24 to Nov 22
Whenever Mercury opposes Mars you never know whether you are coming or going. Problems are likely at work, projects will delayed and others will be horribly scattered making it difficult for you to progress at your normal high speed. You will feel temporarily deprived of some of your enthusiasm and energy, so this is a time when you should ideally pace yourself. Focus on what is most important.
sagittarius
Nov 23 to Dec 21
Hold tight if you’re about to make some travel plans as this isn’t the right time for them. Any arrangements you make shall come unravelled or come to nothing. If you have no choice and still have to take off into the wide blue yonder then prepare yourself for delays and hold-ups. Also, tolerance is going to be called for when dealing with certain people as your patience is likely to be tested.
capricorn
Dec 22 to January 20
aquarius
January 21 to Feb 19
Your energy levels aren’t very high, so you need to look after your health and pace yourself – almost everything will feel like too much effort. You’re also very sensitive at the moment and could easily feel other people are either looking down their noses at you or giving you the cold shoulder. Try not to let your sensitivities rule, instead put that wonderful witty sense of humour that you are famous for to work.
The clash between Mercury and Mars is having a negative effect on your relationships during the next several weeks. This is your cue to take action over any business or personal partnerships that you aren’t happy about. This means you will have to face certain realities in your connection with others and meet problems head on. It may also indicate that certain people no longer belong in your life. Be careful of jealousy and possessiveness invading your life.
pisces
February 20 to March 20
Problems are likely on the domestic and working fronts in the next seven weeks, and unless you enjoy having to start all over again it would be wise to avoid starting any new projects. They won’t get very far and they might even end up causing more trouble than they are worth. Try not to over do things and remember to take breaks when necessary as it is important that you look after your health and well being.

Staying Healthy
Susan Garrad
Advice for a healthy pregnancy Q. As a first time mum-tobe I’m feeling overwhelmed by all the advice I’m getting. Can you give me some simple advice for a healthy pregnancy? A. As an expectant mother, you will undoubtedly be bombarded with do’s and don’ts: “Eat this,” “Don’t eat that,” “Do this,” “Don’t do that.” But don’t let all of the advice overwhelm you. Th e following suggestions are simple tips that can improve the prospects of good health and normal development for you and your child. Regular prenatal care: Establish care with an obstetrician or midwife early in your pregnancy. Take prenatal vitamins to help ensure a healthy pregnancy, but don’t take any other medications without consulting your health care provider fi rst. Diet: Load your plate with fresh produce, whole grains and lean proteins. Many women fi nd that eating several smaller meals per day is easier on the
digestive system than three normal meals. Daily exercise: Th is doesn’t mean intense Olympic-level training during your pregnancy! However, doing mild to moderate prenatal exercise promotes the circulation of blood throughout the body and helps maintain strong bones and tissue. Although sit-ups, crunches or other abdominal exercises are not recommended, some good exercises include yoga, swimming, brisk walking and exercise bike. Get plenty of rest: Exhaustion is a common complaint of expecting mothers. The body goes through a large amount of demanding work to generate a new human life, just when you need to be building up your energy reserve for after baby comes. Th erefore rest! Try to take a nap each day if you can. Comfortable clothing: Avoid tight-fitting clothes, which could interfere with your blood flow. Stop the excuses
Keeping Fit David Stein I had a really good swim this morning, it’s just a pity it was while trying to get out to my letter box and back. Lucky those 20kg dumbbells I ordered didn’t get delivered. With this crazy weather we are getting it’s pretty easy to fi nd an excuse to miss training. Especially as we get busier at work or maybe have lost a couple kilos, the new year’s resolutions really start to suffer. If losing an extra kilo isn’t getting you up and out of bed anymore I read a report that might give you some even better reasons to get the running shoes on, or fl ippers. The science daily report showed that regular exercise can reduce the risk and symptoms of more than 20 physical and mental health conditions, and can also slow down how quickly your body ages. A review of research, which summarised the fi ndings of 40 papers published between 2006 and 2010, found that exercise improves conditions including cancer, heart disease, dementia, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure. Exercise is, without a doubt,
one of the most powerful ways to improve your health. After reviewing the 40 papers, researchers found that exercise reduces the risk of at least two dozen health conditions, ranging from cancer to type 2 diabetes and depression. Exercise also slows down the rate of ageing itself, providing perhaps the closest example of a real life fountain of youth as we will ever fi nd. Hopefully if you get out and get the exercise in now, you won’t get any of those conditions in the fi rst place. Sure there is always one clown who says ‘why bother, you’ve got
to die from something’, normally as they’re shoving a hot dog or cigarette in their mouth. But in the meantime, for those of us that want a good quality of life and enjoy being active and healthy, know that exercise is a huge source of major health benefits. Do research yourself, go out and do a half hour of some kind of activity you enjoy that’s at a fairly intense level for you. Finish, sit down while your breath comes back. Then answer one question. How do you feel? Enjoy the weekend and I’ll see you next week.

THE WISDOM OF BUDDHISM Nuns opens in Erskineville on March 22 and runs until April 15.
NUNS WITH BAD HABITS
N
uns is a satirical comedy about three rebellious nuns who plot to overthrow their mother superior. The nuns are privy to a saucy secret about the Mother that they believe will bring her to her knees. The crazy crew includes Sister Catherine, a 30-something smoking, drinking, gambling troublemaker; Sister Bernadette,
an idealistic, moralistic 20something who is easily led; Sister Roza, a tough, smart and pragmatic fighter; and Mother Superior Patricia, the most dogmatic and manipulative of women, not without her vices. These are possibly the worst nuns you have ever met – bad tempers, bad attitudes and certainly some very bad habits. Sydney playwright
Robert Luxford’s outrageous comedy started life as a 10minute piece at Crash Test Drama and went on to make the fi nals of the Short+Sweet festival. The full-length version has since had readings in London, Toronto and New York. Nuns opens on March 22 at the Imperial Hotel, Erskineville, playing on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday weekly.

relevant to the modern mind. He is the author of the international bestseller, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, and is one of the most respected Buddhist teachers today. Rinpoche is a gifted communicator, and audiences comment on the power of his teachings to reveal a glimpse of the
innermost nature of the mind and bring lasting transformation and confidence to dealing with the challenges of daily life. Rinpoche will speak on March 10 from 6.30pm at the Sofitel Wentworth. Tickets start at $29. For more information or to book, contact Ferry Tiu on 9211 5304 or email sydney@ rigpa.org.au.

Bronwyn Bancroft’s exhibition at Carriageworks.
PASSION, POWER, POLITICS
P
assion, Power, Politics at Carriageworks is a celebration of artist Bronywn Bancroft’s experiences as she melds together 30 years of work as an artist, activist, designer and producer of children’s books. Every piece in Bancroft’s exhibition tells a story from her life. One work, ‘You don’t even look Aboriginal’, was created after a woman
ridiculed Bancroft for identifying herself as Aboriginal at a public event. “The guest lecture was based on my identity and my family,” Bancroft said. “The woman had sat through 50 minutes, not listening, just bubbling with frustration as she could not cope with me.” The scope of the exhibition is due in part to a PhD Bancroft is completing
into the fields of passion, power and politics. Power is realised as a force for people to create a better world and as a tool for the self-obsessed; while politics is part of everyone’s life from birth. “[Passion] is the one element that has allowed me to endure,” she said. The exhibition will show at the Carriageworks until March 17.

Volvo launches its partnership with Waratahs
V
olvo Car Australia has hosted a drive day at Eastern Creek Raceway to kick-start its major partnership with the Waratahs in 2012, using the day to highlight the importance of defensive driver training for the young team members at the club. With an average squad age of 23, the majority of Waratahs players fall into the age group of the nation’s most over-represented road users in terms of fatalities on our roads – males aged under 25.
Despite only accounting for 15 per cent of drivers, 17 to 25-year-olds make up approximately 36 per cent of annual road fatalities – 80 per cent of whom are male. The Volvo Cars drive day was designed to expose the players to practical exercises to help demonstrate how speeding can impact on the behaviour of a vehicle. Volvo Cars also took the opportunity to demonstrate some of its advanced safety technology. Despite the serious
message, the day took on an exciting finale as players were treated to ‘hot laps’ around Eastern Creek Raceway. “The day was a great team-building exercise for the club as some of our young players, staff and members were exposed to both the theoretical and practical sides of road safety and road craft,” said Waratahs winger and Volvo Cars ambassador, Drew Mitchell. “Being able to experience Volvo’s safety technology... really opened our eyes.”
OPEN Mondays to Fridays 8am to 5pm and Saturdays by appointment.

Smashing start
Jets win against Bulldogs in first match of the season
A
fter a false start last weekend, the Newtown Jets began their 2012 Rugby League season with a 28-6 win against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday. Despite the steady rain which fell for the entire game, the Jets managed to put some points on the board early, bounding away to an 18-0 lead after only 10 minutes. Centre Brett Lane’s speed in pouncing on wayward
Bulldogs passes saw him race away for two long-distance tries, which were converted from out wide by halfback, Blake Davies. Almost on halftime, five-eighth Trent Trotter darted through the Bulldogs’ defensive cordon and sent fullback Jason McGrady away to the line. With the score at 22-6 at the break, the persistent rain in the second half aff ected the players’ handling with Newtown able to add only
one converted try to their tally late in the game. Jets coach, Greg Matterson, said that while it was gratifying to post a comfortable win in front of a good crowd, he was more pleased with the determined on-line defence shown by his players. The Jets take on Balmain at Campbelltown this Saturday at 3.30pm. Following the game, the Wests Tigers and Roosters will clash in the Toyota Cup fi xture.
Sport-a-Month is back, and this time it’s a walking challenge.
W
alk right into February by taking part in the Walking Challenge, a lunchtime walk or joining a Heart Foundation Walking Group as part of Council’s Sport-a-Month promotion. Join in the Walking Challenge by completing at least fi ve walks for a period of at least 30 minutes in the Marrickville area. Log your walks and send the registration form and
walk details to Marrickville Council. As an extra incentive, residents who complete the challenge can receive a free gift, either a lanyard, stress ball, frisbee or bucket hat. Council will also be running eight lunchtime walks throughout the month, in Petersham, Dulwich Hill, St Peters and Marrickville. All walks are approximately 30-45 minutes long and start at 12.30pm.
Walkers are advised to arrive five minutes before the walk is due to start and to bring a hat and a bottle of water. The Heart Foundation also runs regular walking groups in the Marrickville area. Heart Foundation Walking is a fun, social and easy way to be active. For more information contact Council’s Recreation Officer on 9335 2191 or email recoff1@marrickville.nsw. gov.au.
