L

ocal residents, Councillors and community groups have spoken against the proposed Lewisham Towers development at a Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) meeting at Petersham RSL on Tuesday.

It is the second time in a fortnight that community members have fronted up to a meeting over a deeply unpopular development proposal, following the PAC meeting into the Marrickville Metro expansion earlier this month. Summer Hill resident, Shirley Barrett, told the PAC she felt “dismay” at the plans to build the

378-dwelling apartment complex on the McGill Street site, which she believes will considerably increase traffic gridlock in the area. “How can this possibly be allowed?” Ms Barrett said. “Once it happens, [residents] face the nightmarish prospect of not being able to get in and out of our suburb.” Marrickville Councillor, Mary

O’Sullivan, argued that the proposed development fl ies in the face of the Council’s Local Environment Plan, which was gazetted by the Department of Planning as recently as December 12 last year. With the department having already recommended the proposal to proceed, the PAC is the fi nal stage of the decision-making process.

extensive training and testing for taxi drivers. I remember arriving in Melbourne one day and asking to go to the MCG – the response: “Where is that?” It was the equivalent of asking where Big Ben was in London… without hesitation I got out of the taxi and just waited for another. To not know the basic directions is inexcusable in any city in the world. A colleague of mine at ‘A Current Affair’ actually went through the training process last year, and learned how farcical it can be. When he asked the teacher whether it was hard to become a cabbie, the exact response to him was “it’s more diffi cult to stay out of the industry than it is to get into it”. And therein lies the problem. If we can actually set some high standards for people coming into the game, hopefully we can expect a higher standard of service next time we hail a cab.

taxi, but there have certainly been times where I’ve scratched my head and just wondered whether I’d have been better off walking. Last year the taxi I was travelling in ran into the back of another car. Th is was frustrating in its own right, but the driver then spent the next 10 minutes arguing with the other driver before exchanging details. All the while I was sitting in the cab waiting to get to the airport, and get this, the meter was still running! But I didn’t actually complain to that driver because in many ways I actually sympathise with them a little. I hate sitting in traffi c in the morning on the way to work – they do it all day every day. Not only that, they get paid a pittance for the trauma. I think what needs to be done to ensure there’s less frustration on behalf of both the passenger and driver is to have much more

I try to like taxi drivers, I genuinely do. There are some really good ones out there, and plenty more absolute shockers. I think everyone has their own horror story of a terrible taxi ride – I personally have about 4,000. Th is week at work I had the not so pleasurable experience of dealing with a taxi driver who had bashed a female passenger, abused another, and later threatened me. Worst of all he claimed that his behaviour was acceptable because the woman he was driving was allegedly drunk at the time. I don’t care who you are, there is never any excuse to physically attack a female. Ever. The good news is the Department of Transport disagreed with his side of the story and has banned him from driving a taxi. The department has also pursued criminal charges against the driver. I’ve never had anything that bad happen to me while I’ve been in a

Caught out: Burqa mural graffiti A man has been arrested for defacing the Say No To Burqas mural after the artist caught him red-handed The controversial artist behind the ‘Say No To Burqas’ mural has had the last laugh. A man was arrested last Friday for defacing the mural, just hours after the Inner City Weekender published a story. BY LOUISE BOURKE

A

man was arrested by Newtown Police last Friday evening for defacing the private property of Sergio Redegalli, the man behind the ‘Say No To Burqas’ mural. The man was using methylated spirits to deface Mr Redegalli’s mural, only hours after the Inner City Weekender reported on the new mural last Friday. Mr Redegalli said he was alerted to the vandalism by a security camera, which is installed above the wall. He asked a member of his staff to call the police while he confronted the man and performed a citizen’s arrest. Mr Redegalli waited with the man until the police arrived. “He truly believed that I was going to be charged with assault for holding him down,” Mr Redegalli said. “However, to his real surprise, he was arrested for malicious damage to private property.” It is understood the man responsible for vandalising the new mural will appear in court, but the date of his appearance has not yet been determined.

Marrickville Greens Councillors Marika Kontellis, Fiona Byrne, and Cathy Peters have spoken out against the ‘Say No To Burqas’ mural ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8. “Depictions like the mural in Newtown tell some women in our community that they are not welcome,” Cr Kontellis said. Cr Byrne said: “Murals like the ‘Ban the Burqa’ just help to cement old stereotypes about women’s capacity to think and choose for ourselves how we portray ourselves.” And Cr Peters said the community should embrace its differences, “not stigmatise some people for them”. Th e councillors are encouraging the celebration of all women on International Women’s Day. Sergio Redegalli’s latest mural was vandalised last Friday.

arrickville Council will honour the late equal rights and welfare advocate, Betty Spears, by naming a local park after her. The motion to name a park or laneway after Ms Spears was raised at last week’s Council meeting by Cr Emanuel Tsardoulias, who

praised the Marrickville-born campaigner’s work within the local community. “In 1984, Betty Spears was instrumental in securing a grant from the Federal and State governments to establish a long day care centre in Tempe, where it still exists and is thriving,” Cr Tsardoulias said. “Betty Spears will be remembered for her achievements… and most

importantly, for her work in the community with families and women.” Cr Fiona Byrne also praised Ms Spears’ advocacy in championing equal rights, and suggested a park be the appropriate testament to her. While Council is yet to confi rm which park will be renamed, it appears the unnamed park in Kintore Street, Dulwich Hill, is the most likely.

P O LI CE SNAP SH OT High-range: Woman caught drink driving

The Marrickville Bingo Hall was robbed on Friday while 250 players looked on in shock.

Horror for bingo hall Four masked men stole thousands while locals played bingo on Friday

A

bout 250 people playing bingo at the Marrickville Bingo Hall on Friday night watched in horror as four masked gunmen stormed the hall and demanded money. The men allegedly entered the hall, near Enmore Park, at about 9.40pm and threatened those inside with guns and machetes. They then demanded money from the cash register, according to owner, Vince Perry.

While the group of mostly elderly players were frightened by the robbery, no-one was harmed. Ambulance paramedics were called to treat several people for shock. “It’s absolutely outrageous,” Mr Perry said. “You should not scare anyone with a gun especially the elderly. They should be respected.” It is understood the masked men stole between $4,000 and $5,000 in cash that had been raised by the bingo club for charity.

Marrickville Police believe the four men fl ed the scene in a suspected stolen black sedan vehicle and headed west on Addison Road. The Bingo Hall, which is open from Tuesday to Sunday till late and attracts players from around Sydney, raises money for causes including children’s charity, Learning Links. Bingo players returned to the club on the Saturday evening following the robbery, and Mr Perry said it was “back to business as usual”.

Tough decision for MP Albanese says constituents helped him with decision to back Kevin Rudd BY LOUISE BOURKE

G

rayndler residents helped local MP, Anthony Albanese, make his decision to vote for Kevin Rudd during Monday’s leadership ballot, which was won by Julia Gillard 71 votes to 31. Mr Albanese said he consulted with friends, colleagues and members of the local community who had approached him, written to him and called him. “In my electorate office I rang

a number of constituents who’d emailed me – people who had given particularly thoughtful contributions – just to have a chat about their thoughts on these issues because at the end of the day, while it’s a decision for the Caucus, it’s also a decision for the nation,” Mr Albanese said. While admitting that not all of his constituents agreed with his eventual decision, Mr Albanese said there was “a consistency in the position I’ve taken”. It is widely expected that Mr Albanese will hold on to his position

as Transport Minister in the impending cabinet reshuffle, which is expected to be announced by the Prime Minister today (Friday, March 2) or early next week. Ms Gillard has said she wants Mr Albanese to remain as Leader of the House, despite Mr Albanese offering her his resignation last weekend before the leadership ballot. Mr Albanese gave a tearful press conference on Saturday, saying he was saddened by the way the Labor Party had conducted itself in recent days.

No firm timetable for light rail

Government won't commit to construction time frame, but maintains light rail is still a priority for inner city

T

he State Government won’t commit to a fi rm timetable for the construction of the Inner West Light Rail Extension, despite the urging of local MPs. Marrickville MP, Carmel Tebbutt, and Canterbury MP, Linda Burney, spoke to a motion put forward by Ms Tebbutt in Parliament late last week to support the completion of the light rail extension by the end of 2012, as planned by the previous government.

After some debate, Liberal Drummoyne MP, John Sidoti, put a movement to amend the motion, inserting instead to ensure that construction is delivered “in a timely fashion”. Fellow Liberal MP, Charles Casuscelli, whose electorate of Strathfi eld is part of the inner west light rail corridor, said the extension was a priority for the government and should be completed by 2014. “[The extension] can and is being

delivered without unnecessary delay,” he said. “We are focusing on removing as much unnecessary delay as possible.” The refusal to commit to the 2012 deadline has angered Ms Tebbutt, who said the move is yet another show of contempt to inner west residents. Ms Burney said it was a “painful blow” to those who were looking forward to using the light rail by the end of this year.

The Inner West Light Rail won’t be built this year.

BUSINESS Business Finance Tough times

Hard to sell small business Small business owners looking to sell (for example, because they’re nearing retirement age) are facing tougher sale conditions than in the past, new research has shown. Th e BizExchange Index for the December quarter revealed a double dose of bad news for struggling business vendors – plummeting business prices and a slide in the availability of fi nance for buyers. In the past year there has been a dramatic rise in the number of small businesses for sale, particularly ‘micro businesses’. Yet around 40 per cent of fi rms on the market were low-priced businesses, selling for less than one year’s earnings, the research showed. With the number of business failures nearly doubling in 2011 compared to 2010, there’s no real competition among buyers to drive up business prices. But it’s not all bad news for SMEs looking to go under the hammer this year. Business fi nance channels are re-opening and new ones were added in 2011. Plus another round of redundancies in the corporate world could see some cashedup investors looking for opportunities. So while the current market is a tough one to sell a small business, the most important thing you can do is be prepared. Take the time to outline your business plan that takes all costs into consideration.

FOOD & WINE FAIR A little slice of Portuguese history, the Petersham Liquor Mart stocks a wide range of Portuguese wines and beer and spirits. Anna and Alberico Mollica opened the business in 1967, which at that time was a continental delicatessen and liquor store. Through the changes over the years, Anna and Alberico decided to specialise in the liquor industry and the business remained family owned and operated. Petersham Liquor Mart imports a wide range of Portuguese wines, spirits and beers, which are well sort after by the Portuguese community. Th ey also stock an extensive range of wines and spirits from Australia. Petersham Food and Wine Fair has become one of the most cherished events among the local Portuguese and the wider community. “As this year marks the 10th annual Bairro Português Fair, come along and celebrate the contribution Portuguese culture makes to our

community and Petersham’s proud Portuguese heritage,” Cr Hanna said. Bairro Português will be held along Audley and Fisher Streets, Petersham, with parking lanes closed along New Canterbury Road to allow pedestrians to safely access all areas of the event.

Generating your own electricity Saving energy Over the last few weeks, we have been showing you ways to reduce your electricity consumption. Now, we’ll talk about another way of making savings on you bill – by generating electricity. For some, installing a solar system means saving the environment and reducing your carbon footprint, but for most, it is the perfect way to create long term, lasting savings. Now would be the perfect opportunity to install a system as the government’s rebate program can still save you nearly 50 per cent. However, this program will shortly be reviewed and possibly removed. Quality systems should last you more than 20 years, so make sure you select a quality local supplier. Some interstate marketing companies source their components from unheard of factories, then the cost of fi xing your system in the future and warranty issues will defi nitely overshadow any savings you make. Currently, if you decide to install solar systems, you have to move to a net meter – the generated electricity will go to your household appliances fi rst, before going to the grid. Th is means that as the price of electricity increases, your saving would increase accordingly! With the price of electricity set to soar, your system will be worth more every year. If you have the new SmartMeter, and

Jeff Wang

have someone home during the day, then the energy generated by a solar system during the day would greatly offset your shoulder and peak electricity usage, which would save you the greatest amount. On the other hand, if no one is home during the day, a smaller system would be ideal (don’t get sucked into installers pushing you to buy big systems that you don’t need).

HOROSCOPES www.francisbevan.com aries March 21 to April 20

Mercury is retrograde in your sign creating a lot of confusion. Compromise is the key to happiness in relationships, particularly as old issues raise their ugly heads once again. The Full Moon falls in your work sector on the 8th and if you overstep the mark with your boss, clients or authority figures, you could find yourself with a battle on your hands. Owing to stress you are likely to be feeling run down, so be certain to tend to your diet.

It’s a tricky month, as you swing from confident optimism to intense pessimism and back again. Mars being Retrograde will stir up your defences so avoid irritating people. The Full Moon on the 8th warns you to be careful when driving as minor accidents are likely. With the strong Piscean influence this month it’s time to indulge the travel bug by exploring a few holiday options. The New Moon on the 22nd sees a breakthrough if trying to lose weight.

May 22 to June 21

The Full Moon in Virgo on the 8th highlights a real lack of cooperation on the domestic front. A mass of duties will land in your lap and you may find your loved ones less than sympathetic. Perhaps it’s time you put your foot down and learnt to delegate. On the work front you will gain insights into what it is that makes you happy. If someone presents you with a proposition, investigate all the pros and cons before you give them an answer.

Don’t let anxieties and jealous behaviour get out of control. The more tightly you hold onto a loved one, the more likely they are to long for freedom and independence. Venus is in your sign this month, so be certain to indulge this heartruled period with a romantic movie where you can kiss and make up. The Full Moon brings issues to a head involving a child or younger person, perhaps they are in need of your time, attention and loving care.

July 23 to August 23

If you are outspoken you could find yourself coming up against resistance from others especially during the week of The Full Moon (5-11th). By all means stand up for what you believe in, but remember other people have that right, too. A more productive use of your energy would be to go on a fitness kick and to focus on losing those few extra kilos that may of crept on. The New Moon on the 22nd indicates that financially things will certainly be looking up.

virgo

August 24 to September 23

Saturn is retrograde and the Full Moon is in your sign on the 8th, so don’t take chances with your money. Keep to the tried and tested paths and don’t make decisions you haven’t really thought through properly. A partner or close associate may need some extra financial help and this could put a strain on your savings. Legal or official matters may be difficult to handle. The lively New Moon on the 22nd is perfect for partying, sporting events, music or even dancing.

If you’re starting to feel disoriented and confused serious Saturn, fiery Mars and tricky Mercury all bring you back to reality.

Francis A Bevan libra

September 24 to Oct 23

The Full Moon on the 8th is highlighting partnership issues that need immediate attention. The progress of a child is the first of these priorities, perhaps a youngster needs extra help in matters of schooling. Hidden agendas and motives come to light in relationships or friendships. If single avoid being drawn to someone who is no good for you. The New Moon on the 22nd sees you making the most out of business/career opportunities.

scorpio

October 24 to Nov 22

With Mars retrograde and the Full Moon in Virgo on the 8th, the more obsessive and driven you are, the more difficult the month. Avoid being possessive about your friends as this will get you nowhere. In relationships you need to let go of old thoughts, emotions or people that are holding you back. If you are in a serious relationship it’s time to organise your wedding plans or take it to another level of commitment. A sexy new lover is possible for single Scorpios.

sagittarius

Nov 23 to Dec 21

Don’t get too carried away with your own importance. If you want to influence others then a touch of humility is a good place to start. The Full Moon on the 8th indicates a friend may ask you for a favour or a loan and you may not want to give it to them. Be wary of letting yourself be used. Venus is providing a turning point for your career and finances. The New Moon on the 22nd is a good time for some recycling? For some an ex might reappear.

capricorn

Dec 22 to January 20

aquarius

January 21 to Feb 19

The more you try to control others especially loved ones, the more challenging your month will be. The Full Moon on the 8th indicates that work pressure is piling on and so are the demands of your family. The trouble is you are so pressured that you can’t work out the best course of action. If at all possible take a short trip or break away. The New Moon on the 22nd is the ideal time to put some fun back into your life so why not get outdoors and enjoy nature.

As Mercury is Retrograde gossip, secrets and intrigue are circulating, so don’t take things at face value. Spend time and energy investigating what is really going on rather than just accepting what you are told. The Full Moon on the 8th indicates that expenses are likely to get out of hand, it may be necessary to teach your offspring that money doesn’t grow on trees. A good massage might really hit the spot if aches and pains flare up.

pisces

February 20 to March 20

The Full Moon on the 8th joins retrograde Mars in your partnership zone and problems are likely. You may be rather argumentative and in the mood to remind others of all those things they haven’t done but should of. It’s time to spend some extra time on yourself... book clubs, meditation groups and a nice new hair cut will all help to lift your spirits. The New Moon on the 22nd brings a generous gift and an improvement to your overall wellbeing.

Staying Healthy

Food is just as important as exercise

Susan Garrad

Keeping your liver in shape Q. I’ve been reading about the importance of the liver in keeping us healthy and feeling good. Any tips on keeping my liver in good shape? From hormone processing to detoxifi cation, our liver has many important jobs. Many of us put extra stress on our livers with daily activities such as drinking alcohol, breathing unclean air and eating processed or unhealthy foods. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to give your liver the upper hand against these assaults: 1. Diet: Try to eat more of the following foods: • Brassica vegetables such as brussels sprouts, broccoli and caulifl ower • Leafy greens such as spinach, silverbeet and rocket • Foods that are high in fibre such as pears, apples, oats and brown rice Foods to avoid or cut down in your diet: • Nonorganic foods in

general, but especially meats, poultry, eggs and dairy • Refi ned sugar • Alcohol • Coffee 2. Sweating: Whether through exercise or sauna, sweating allows your body to eliminate toxins through the pores, lowering the detoxifi cation burden on the liver. 3. Clean water: Replace any soda, juice or coffee you drink with clean water. Getting enough water in your system is very important for healthy detoxifi cation. 4. Get individual advice: There are many herbs and supplements, as well as other therapies that can also be helpful for liver support and detoxifi cation. Do you have a question for Susan Garrad from Women’s Health Naturally? Would you like to make an appointment to see her? Contact Susan on 9798 9322 or visit www. womenshealthnaturally.com. au for individual health and nutritional advice.

David Stein I have seen a lot of people over the years but I have never seen a person sick or overweight from eating too much good nutritious food. Next time you are standing at a checkout in the supermarket, look at the amount of bars and junk surrounding you. There’s enough calories to feed a starving country within arms reach, only problem is the people eating that stuff would still suff er from malnutrition and unless we eat good healthy food as well, then those sick people will be us. So how do we fi nd good healthy food, when there are big companies who prioritise making money over our family’s health and wellbeing? Firstly, ignore the packaging like a dodgy salesman. You need to educate yourself on what is good and what isn’t. Cartoon characters and words that sound healthy, like low fat, no MSG, natural colours and high in iron could be found on a box of cereal but could describe a can of paint as well. Something like “High in Omega 6” sounds good, until you know

the average modern diet has way too much omega 6 in relation to other essential fats, which is linked to heart disease, stroke, cancer, immune system damage and hormone imbalance. Best option – don’t buy packaging. Don’t let yourself be fooled. Get your chip packet, rip it open and pour it straight in your trolley! Not really. I mean buy items that have minimal packaging. If it still looks like it did while it was growing, it is a good start. Secondly, always read the ingredients list – they are listed in order of amount used. We can’t aff ord to be brainless consumers as companies are pushing the limit of what they can put in a wrapper and call food. Sugar, fl our and salt are very cheap and easy to make taste nice. But putting stuff in your mouth doesn’t mean you’re feeding yourself properly at all. If you want to feel good and have energy all day eat the food that can make it happen. Good, nutritious food will have you bouncing off the walls.

You know how you’ll feel after a late night with pizza and a drink too many, but you can be sure when you eat good, fresh wholesome food your body can repair and heal and you’ll feel a whole lot better for it.

AGE OF THE VIDEO JOCKEY

E

verybody’s favourite DJ, Fatboy Slim, is playing live at the Enmore on Thursday, March 8 with a visual and interactive show to get the party started. Touring as part of the Future Music Festival juggernaut, the famous DJ and producer, whose real name is Norman Cook, is back on our shores after three years with his new mind-bending show. Fatboy Slim has enjoyed an enduring music career and international acclaim. A leading figure in carving out a space for electronic music, he rose to fame in the midst of the UK’s early 1980s hip hop and block party scene. Officially adopting the moniker of Fatboy Slim in late 1996, his catalogue of hits since boasts iconic tracks like ‘Everybody needs a 303’, ‘The Rockafeller Skank’, ‘Praise You’, and ‘Weapon Of Choice’. These days, Cook’s

This year's festival kicks off on March 17.

RECLAIMING THE LANES

Fatboy Slim is playing at the Enmore Theatre.

show involves not just playing his own patented brand of electro-house, but a complex audio-visual production. “I’m technically a video jockey now,” he said. “We write scripts for all the tunes, make fi lms. Now,

because of the technology, no matter what speed I play at, even if I just chop quickly into it, the visuals are all synchronized. It’s a show.” For bookings, call the Enmore Theatre on 9550 3666 or book through Ticketek.

T

he community festival, Reclaim The Lanes, returns for the fourth year on Saturday, March 17. Nonsponsored and organic in its development, the festival in and around Newtown celebrates the forgotten and underused urban spaces of the inner west. “Reclaim The Lanes embodies the spirit of the inner west and the diversity

and creative potential which is a huge part of why we live here,” said Chris Lego, an organiser of the event. “We aim to be a sustainable event in terms of rubbish and recycling management, our relationship with our neighbours and the police… because we still believe in community spirit and celebration.” Hundreds of people join

in with the parade, which stops at two secret laneway locations for an hour each to experience the potential of these forgotten spaces of Newtown. Along the way punters can expect bands, sound systems, games, activities for kids, picnics in the lanes and public art. The parade leaves from the Hub at 2.40pm. Visit the Facebook page for details.
