arrickville Council’s efforts to remove graffiti from a local skate park is damaging the already-run down surface, making it harder to skate on and more dangerous for riders, two local skate boarders say. R-J Williams and Nate Ho believe the Council would be better off ignoring the graffiti at the Jack Shanahan Reserve and directing their resources elsewhere. “What we’ve seen is the heavy demise of the surface as graffi ti is cleaned off,” Mr Williams said. “It wears out equipment and destroys boards. Th e kids don’t have a problem with the graffiti… it fi lls in cracks in the concrete, creating a better surface for skating.” The Inner City Weekender visited the skate park to watch Mr Ho traverse the skate bowl this week. And as a skilled skateboarder, he even had trouble navigating the uneven surface. The duo, who run skate shop Westsyde Connections in Dulwich Hill, say the community would chip in to improve the rundown park and have told this to Council. “Council don’t have to take it all on… they don’t realise a lot of locals who have kids that use the park would help out,” Mr Williams said. A Council spokesperson said they have received no formal requests to leave graffi ti at the skate park, and no testing had been undertaken to indicate the effect the graffi ti removal has on the surface.

One thing jumps out at me when I watch the NRL – that the women on the field shouldn’t be there. Now before you launch into scathing letters blasting my apparent sexism, allow me to explain. I love going to the footy. I’ve been doing it since I was a week old, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if my fi rst words were “Go Tigers!” My dad signed me up as a club member for my fi rst birthday, and I’ve been one ever since. There are few things that can make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck more than hearing the roar of a crowd as athletes go toe to toe on the field of battle. I love seeing the men doing their thing on the field, but when it comes to the women out there, I’m not such a fan. Well to be more precise, it’s the cheerleaders I don’t like. Nothing displays good old fashioned sexism and objectifi cation
THE INNER CITY WEEKENDER
an association with like having cheerleaders prancing up and down the side of the fi eld wearing next to nothing. The sub-context of what they do is, in my mind, pretty simple: the boys are out there putting on the real show, and the girls get to stand on the side and cheer for them… so long as they are pretty and happy to wear skimpy clothing. That sort of mindset might have cut it back in the ‘anything goes’ days of the ‘70s and ‘80s, but these days it’s an insult to people’s intelligence. Let’s be honest – in these modern times where pyrotechnics and big screen replays are a feature at most fi xtures, the routines provided by cheerleaders are hardly considered by most to be entertainment. You hardly see them on the television coverage, and most people at the stadium would be hard pressed to point out exactly where the girls and their pom-poms are during the game. But for the few that do catch a
glimpse, I’d argue there is a pretty poor message being sent to them: that a woman’s role is to stand on the side and look pretty while men are paid to get the job done. No other footy code in Australia uses cheerleaders. The AFL did brie fly fl irt with the idea during the ‘80s when the Sydney Swans were (in)famously represented by the Swanettes. The fact that this was the brain child of (the equally infamous) Dr Geoff rey Edelsten is probably reason enough to recognise it was a decision made in poor taste. Given the events of the last few years, the NRL should be doing anything within its power to improve the standing of females within the game. There are now more women than ever before throwing on the footy boots and playing the game, which is brilliant. Now let’s just try and reduce the number in knee-high boots patrolling the sidelines.

Working towards closing the gap NSW Governor lends support to promote closing the gap between Aboriginal and non-indigenous Australians Reducing the gap between Aboriginal and non-indigenous Australians was the message behind RPA Hospital’s ‘Close the Gap’ campaign last week. Even NSW Governor, Marie Bashir, jumped on board to sign the mural. BY LOUISE BOURKE
A
boriginal people still have a life expectancy that is 10-17 years less than non-indigenous Australians, and it’s time to do something about it. Th is was the message at the ‘Close the Gap’ function at RPA Hospital last week, which promoted the range of health services available to indigenous people through the hospital. The ‘Close the Gap’ event was attended by NSW Governor, Marie Bashir, who signed a mural in support. Director of Aboriginal Health Services for the Sydney Local Health District, George Long, said there were many programs designed for indigenous people, including physical health activities, mental health and anti-smoking programs. “The message we’re trying to get out there is we want to close this gap,” Mr Long said. “We want people to become involved in their own health care, and also to implement it.” Historical factors like distrusting of government, as well as socioeconomic factors including access to healthcare and the cost, accounts for a lower life expectancy for Aboriginal people, according to Mr Long.

Plans for Marrickville Library causing rift between local Councillors.
Library disunity
Project plans being used as political football, Councillor says BY LOUISE BOURKE
T 081ICD1583
he Marrickville Library project will be delayed following serious divisions between Councillors about whether to build the new library and how much the project should cost. The disunity over the project plans has emerged over the past fortnight, with tempers fl aring at two separate Council meetings.
At a closed-door extraordinary meeting on Tuesday night to evaluate the three tender proposals, it has emerged that Labor councillors and two Independents voted to hold off on selecting a design. During last week’s meeting, Independent Councillors, Victor Macri and Morris Hanna, voiced their concerns over the scale and cost of the current $30 million project and the need
to increase rates to fund it. “People have… expressed distress at the size of this project,” Cr Macri said. Cr Hanna said: “Ask anyone in Marrickville Road what people are saying, we have never had anyone come and say ‘yeah, it’s fantastic’.” Greens Councillor, Max Phillips, said the delay was unnecessary and showed the Councillors were prepared to use the library issue as a political football.

Men raid house in horror masks before fleeing with jewellery and computers
I
n a scene reminiscent of a horror movie, three men broke into a home on Premier Street, Marrickville, early on Sunday morning, terrorising the three people inside before fl eeing with jewellery and computers. Two of the three men wore horrorstyle face masks, while the third man was wearing a balaclava. Th ey were armed with knives and a gun. The men broke into the home at
about 3.15am, where two women aged 18 and 19 were sitting in the lounge room. One of the males went to a bedroom and forced a 45-year-old man from the room and into the lounge room. Police say the man was struck to the head several times by the offenders. After demanding money and jewellery, the offenders left the premises through a rear door and are
believed to have fled on foot. The men have been described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance with a solid build. Police are appealing to the community for information following the incident. Anyone who witnessed the crime or has any information that may be able to assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Th e cyclist was riding north along Enmore Road where it is alleged the driver and passenger of a dark red Mitsubishi Lancer sedan began sounding the horn and yelling, before throwing a battery at the cyclist as he turned right onto Wilson Street at King Street. Th e passenger of the car allegedly got out near the intersection of Abercrombie Street and Golden Grove Streets in Darlington and assaulted the cyclist. The male passenger is described as Caucasian appearance, medium build, 25-30-years-old with short brown hair, moustache, wearing blue Nike t-shirt and pale blue shorts. Bank robbery: Teen in court this week
A man has appeared in court this week over the attempted armed
robbery of a woman outside a bank in Marrickville late last year. On Friday, December 16 a 52-year-old woman withdrew a large sum of cash from a bank on Marrickville Road. As she left the location she was allegedly threatened by an 18year-old man holding a knife. The woman screamed and struggled with the man before he ran from the scene empty-handed. As part of the investigation, the woman’s jumper was seized by police for forensic examination. DNA taken from the jumper led officers to an address in Spring Street, Padstow on Monday, March 26 where the 18-year-old man was eventually arrested and charged after a short foot pursuit with police. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Drug driving: Driving without licence

At 7.40pm on Sunday, March 25, police stopped the man on his motorcycle on Crystal Street, Petersham. Police conducted licence checks on the man which revealed his learner’s permit had expired. Th e man admitted to being in possession of heroin, before pulling out a small plastic resealable bag of the drug.

Additional police joins ranks at Newtown Local Area Command
T
wo new police officers are expected to be allocated to the Newtown Local Area Command in May. The announcement comes a week after local MP, Carmel Tebbutt, criticised the State Government for not providing local area commands their full allocation of officers. “I am proud and pleased to be welcoming these new police officers to our ranks,” said Newtown Local Area
Commander, Superintendent Darren Bennett. “They are about to embark on a career that will be as rewarding as it is challenging. “From day one, they will assist their fellow officers in reducing criminal activity and providing grass-roots solutions to local issues.” Central Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch, said the officers would be a valuable asset to the local
community. “They have already proven their worth through their commitment and hard work during their studies at the NSW Police Academy,” he said. NSW Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione, is expected to welcome around 315 new recruits at the attestation ceremony on Friday May, 4. A total of 97 new officers have been assigned to the region to assist in driving down crime.

Towers approved
But developers are subject to a number of planning conditions
T
he controversial Lewisham Towers development has been approved by the Planning Assessment Commission (PAC), subject to a number of conditions. The developers, Lewisham Estate Pty Ltd, will be required to submit new plans to the director general of planning, including capping the height of the building and provisions for 3,000 square metres of central open space.
081ICD1636
A spokesperson for community group, No Lewisham Towers, said the decision posed some problems. “Because the building heights are capped, it will end up reducing the floor space because [the developers] will have to increase the green space and lower the heights of the buildings adjacent the park to get that sun,” the spokesperson said. The proposal made headlines in February when it was reported that
developers were instructed by the Planning Department to redesign digital images to accurately depict the project’s scale. Marrickville Council argued against the development, saying that it contravened Council’s Local Environment Plan. The PAC has included provisions in their report requiring that future development should closely align with the master plan.

BUSINESS Business Finance Here s the score
Small businesses missing out About 400,000 small businesses might be missing out on access to mainstream fi nance largely because credit providers have been unable to adequately assess and price SME risk, according to Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). But that’s set to change with the development of D&B’s new ‘Small Business Risk Score’ which promises to help lenders predict risk and the likelihood of a small business entering bankruptcy over a 12 month period. The score considers a number of factors, including businesses-tobusiness trade payment data, the time since the last consumer default, and the volume of credit enquiries. Businesses with a severe risk rating from the score can either be identifi ed before credit is extended or monitored throughout an existing relationship. Of more than a million unincorporated businesses in Australia, more than 650,000 have no major fi nancial obligation and nearly 400,000 would immediately qualify for fi nance with a risk profi le ranging from minimal to low. Most of those businesses wouldn’t even get a look-in for mainstream fi nance, but new data and pricing tools should help change that. Any tool that helps increase accuracy of measuring small business risk is a good thing.

Staying Healthy
Susan Garrad
Being diagnosed with diabetes Q. I’ve just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Please give me some advice on how best to manage it. Type 2 diabetes occurs as a result of genetic and lifestyle factors including being overweight and inactive, eating a diet high in fat and low in fibre, and excessive use of alcohol and other drugs. Effective management involves a healthy diet and regular physical activity. Medication and even insulin injections may be needed if the disease progresses. The aim of diabetes management is good control of blood glucose levels. Diabetes Australia recommends keeping blood glucose levels between 3.5 and 8.0 mmol/L. Th is will prevent the shortterm effects of very low or very high blood glucose levels as well as the possible long-term problems that can aff ect the eyes, kidneys and nerves. They also recommend
keeping blood pressure and cholesterol within national guidelines to prevent problems like heart attack and stroke. Here are my top tips to help prevent problems with type 2 diabetes: • Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight • Regularly participate in medium intensity physical activity • Spread foods containing carbohydrates evenly over the day and eat the right amount for you • Choose low Glycemic index carbohydrates containing foods • Boost your fibre intake • Look out for sugars • Be sensible with alcohol • Know how to read food labels and modify recipes to suit your needs • Learn how to monitor your own blood glucose levels. Girls, don't be afraid of building muscle
Keeping Fit David Stein I have come close to being slapped by a couple of my female clients before! Now I have your attention, it’s not for anything I did, it’s because I have been crazy enough to suggest they should build some muscle. Why is it some women think if they put a heavy squat bar on their back they are going to have legs like Arnold the next morning? Working with female athletes over the years I have seen how hard it is for them to build any substantial muscle mass. Some women think weights will turn them into one of those freaky female bodybuilders with the huge jaws and Adam’s apples, well unless you’re injecting growth hormone and more testosterone than found in your average men’s rugby team, it’s not going to happen. Normally, training women tend to build fairly small, lean, defi ned and shapely muscle. And often once they build a little they start liking the look it gives their body. Also, trained muscle is stronger for everyday activity because it is less likely to be injured than weak muscle. It learns to store more energy in the muscle to get through
work. It fires quicker than untrained muscle, which helps in making you more coordinated in general movement. Th ere are many, many benefits and one that everybody likes to hear is on the human body is the more lean muscle you have the faster your metabolic rate and the higher your metabolism. Th e faster and more constantly you burn calories! Might seem unfair, but men naturally have more lean muscle mass than women, but with regular fitness training anyone can achieve a high metabolic rate for good weight management. Strength training increases energy expenditure during a training session. Th e high intensity or anaerobic nature of strength training makes for a higher utilisation of carbohydrates during a training session. Th en during the post-exercise recovery period, energy expenditure is elevated for a period ranging from two to 15 hours or even more. Th ese increased energy demands burn more calories, a large portion of which are from stored fat! The addition of muscle mass
causes more calories to be utilised even at rest. It’s comforting to know while one is exerting themselves through a high intensity workout, the hard work will result in an increase in metabolism that continues to burn fat long after the workout is over. So feel free to swing at your trainer, just put a 20kg dumbbell in your hand fi rst!

Sc hool’s out Fun-filled show The Easter Show is nearing, so get the kids excited
T
he smell of hot cross buns in the air means Easter has arrived and along with it, another funfi lled and exciting Sydney Royal Easter Show. There’s heaps more for kids to enjoy this year with new and exciting entertainment and carnival rides at the Show. Buckle up and soar through the air at the Kids Carnival with the three new flying rides: the Super Slide, Red Barron and Kite Flyer. Join in the fun with the Ashton Circus Skills Workshop and meet the lovable Spanish sword fi ghting cat at the Puss’n’Boots Meet & Greets. Casper’s Scare School tells the charming tale of a ghost who can’t quite do what he’s supposed to, while Alvin and the Chipmunks will have you in stitches when they compete in a talent quest. Animals are a big part of what the show is all about, and the sights, sounds and smells of farm animals are a
world of new sensations for young minds. The Food Farm sets out to answer a simple question – ‘where does food come from?’ – and turns it into a journey
full of surprising facts and meetings with farmers. Th is year’s show runs from April 5 to April 18. For more information visit www. eastershow.com.au.

Jets get thrashed Henson Park headquarters reopens, but side goes down
N
ewtown’s youthful VB NSW Cup team was given a harsh lesson last Saturday when they went down in spectacular fashion to the defending premiers, Canterbury-Bankstown. On a day that was meant to celebrate the reopening of the Jets’ refurbished Henson Park headquarters, the visiting team handed out a 54-10 drubbing to the inexperienced line-up. Canterbury led 22-6 at halftime but a lost scoring
opportunity right on the siren might have given Newtown some momentum to take into the second half. Jets centre, Peni Tagive, scored midway through the fi rst half and winger, Adam Henry, scored early in the second session, after losing the ball over the line on the stroke of halftime. The coaching staff acknowledged after the game that they have plenty of work to do with the inexperienced side.
“There’s no doubting the attacking potential of this Canterbury side, but we succeeded in making them look like world beaters,” said Jets coach, Greg Matterson. The Jets had their share of misfortune with injuries to front-rower, Ryan Verlinden and fi ve-eighth, Jack Littlejohn, which disrupted the team’s cohesion in the fi rst half. Newtown are back at Henson Park again on Saturday at 3pm.
The debate over Robbie Farah’s appearance on NRL On Fox on Wednesday night has certainly intensifi ed in the days following it. Personally, I think Farah carried on like a pork chop and as captain of the club, I’m disappointed that he acted the way he did. Farah claims it was an ambush of sorts and I understand that perhaps the questions were a little over the top, but they deserved to be asked and for Farah to defend the side missing 48 tackles on Monday night by saying they scambled well was a weak response, in my view. I have full respect for Farah on the field, but in this case, I think he could have handled the situation better. The Tigers were very disappointing on Monday night and there’s concerns over their defence. Robbie Farah would hate me using the word, but they were soft at times. Th e Raiders looked like world-beaters, and they are not. With one win from four games, and that coming in golden point over Cronulla, things are looking shaky. Obviously the Tigers have in previous years come good with great winning streaks, but there’s no point in taking that risk every year. Th e Tigers must beat Souths on Sunday to restore their season and get things well and truly back on track for their fans.
Farah carried on like a pork chop There’s rumours going around that Benji Marshall is in doubt for Sunday’s game after suffering headaches. Several betting agencies suspended betting for a short period once the rumours started to surface. It seems, however, that Marshall will play. The big rumour of the week is obviously the talk that Braith Anasta is set to make a dramatic switch to the Tigers next year. It’s no surprise that Anasta may be forced to look elsewhere, with the Roosters set for a cleanout at season’s end. Anasta may indeed be the calming, experienced infl uence the Tigers need, particularly to off-set the livewire talents of Benji Marshall. Supporters can now purchase the fantastic new Wests Tigers Heritage jerseys for 2012. Wests Tigers have released Western Suburbs Magpies and Balmain Tigers heritage jerseys which will be worn by the NRL side in two matches this year. The jerseys retail for $160. It has now been revealed that the senior playing group were happy for Willie Mason to come to the club. It was only sponsors and potential public backlash that stopped the deal. I’m glad – Mason was never going to be the right fit for the Tigers.
