Priest serves time

on’t be fooled – the man in this picture is no criminal. It’s John Pearce, the parish priest at St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Marrickville, who plans to voluntarily imprison himself in a plastic cell to raise money for a good cause. Father Pearce is one of 10 local figures who have agreed to take part in the mock incarceration for the Marrickville PCYC fundraiser next weekend. He’ll be joined in a cell by Mayor, Morris Hanna, and Independent Councillor, Dimitrios Thanos, to name just a few. “I was asked by a parishioner if I’d be kind enough to do it,” he explained. “I think it’s a great idea for a community event.” Father Pearce isn’t concerned about spending a few hours in a cramped cell with up to nine others – he is more worried about being late for a wedding he is officiating at his church later that afternoon. Claire Currey, from the Marrickville PCYC, said the annual event is a fun way to raise funds for youth programs to keep kids off the streets and away from crime. “People can come down, bring their cash to donate or write a cheque. Th ere’ll also be a BBQ sausage sizzle on the day, so there’s plenty going on,” she said. Time 4 Kids is on Saturday, April 21 from 11am at the Marrickville PCYC.
