“Over the past eight years we have worked with Council to relocate the unit, as the unit has outgrown its premises,” Mr Carney said. “It’s become increasingly difficult in our cramped facility… we are asking Council to make a decision to allow the matter to be resolved.” Cr Mary O’Sullivan noted that Marrickville was a “de facto coastal

Cr O’Sullivan also said she believed the new unit would be a “great addition to Sydenham”. Cr Victor Macri said it was “embarrassing” that Council had not resolved the issue after eight years.

It’s rare to say that people fi nd career inspiration in their backyard shed, but that’s what happened to me as a child. Hanging in our rickety old shed was a single item of torn and faded clothing that I simply adored… my grandfather’s fl ying suit from his time as an RAAF pilot during World War II. Married to his beautiful young wife Kathleen, and with a growing family at home, Alexander Steinfort, the man I would simply come to know as Pa, dropped everything to serve his country. Many were bemused that someone with a German name would be signing up to fi ght for Australia – but you only needed to see the glint in his eye to know he was fair dinkum. Pa had three great loves: his wife, his country, and the Richmond Football Club. He never told me the exact order of those, but I highly suspect that at times Kathleen wasn’t top of the pops.

an association with Pa trained as a pilot with the RAAF, but never saw battle – and I didn’t learn of Pa’s exploits in the Air Force until I discovered his fl ying suit by chance one afternoon. The out fit is best described as a khaki zip-up jumpsuit, with a small RAAF badge – sounds unimpressive, but to the imaginative mind of a seven-year-old it was amazing to think about where it had been, and the thrill of flying an aeroplane. I loved it and was told repeatedly not to try to put it on, much to my chagrin. But when Pa found out I was interested in joining the Air Force, his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. I think he envisaged me picking up where he left off – he seemed disappointed he never got to take on the Japanese (he simply called them ‘the Japs’ in that mildly racist way that only former servicemen could get away with). But any plans I had to join the RAAF were shot to pieces when I hit a major growth spurt at 16, and was told I would be too tall to fi t in
a fighter jet. Oh the irony, it was Pa’s athletic genes that cost me the chance to join his beloved RAAF – I’m pretty sure he was even more disappointed than me. Sadly, Pa passed away four years ago, and I still think about him a lot. His birthday, August 31, is an important date, but I still fi nd April 25 a day that resonates even more for me. When I stand at the Dawn Service, I think of Pa – and then I think of the families of our current servicemen and imagine how much more of an emotional day it must be for them. Those young servicemen, like Alexander Steinfort some 70 years ago, are on deployment in Afghanistan or other dangerous locations because they love their country. It’s an amazing sacrifi ce made for us by courageous men and women. Just like my Pa.

Beat breast cancer, get checked
BreastScreen NSW is bringing its mobile van to Marrickville next week to provide free mammograms to women A screening mammogram can detect the early signs of breast cancer and doctors say the best time to treat it is when it’s very small. So when the BreastScreen NSW mobile van comes to Marrickville this month, schedule a visit. BY LOUISE BOURKE
W
omen aged 40 and over living in the inner west are invited to receive a free mammogram by visiting the BreastScreen NSW mobile van at Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre from April 23. BreastScreen NSW Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) Acting Director, Genevieve Wallace, said now was the perfect time for eligible women to take advantage of this important health check. “20 minutes of your time is important to ensure you remain healthy for you and your family,” Ms Wallace said. “It is important to remember that mammograms can locate cancers as small as a pea and are potentially life-saving. “Without screening, cancers are more likely to be noticed when they are much more advanced – at around the size of a small cherry.” BreastScreen is a quality screening service that ensures two specially-trained doctors independently examine each woman’s x-rays. For an appointment at the BreastScreen NSW mobile van at Marrickville Metro or at BreastScreen’s other convenient locations, call 13 20 50.

olice and ambulance services were called to Marrickville Railway Station on Friday afternoon following an incident where a woman was struck by a train. About 20 police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the incident occurred at 1.45pm and closed off the station to commuters. All trains at the station
were emptied, and services between Sydenham and Campsie were suspended while the emergency teams assisted the woman. A CityRail employee said the woman had been standing on the platform when she was struck by an incoming train. A number of shocked witnesses were led away from the scene by friends. The woman was taken to hospital with suspected leg and arm injuries and is
believed to be in a stable condition. During the afternoon, commuters were forced to take the inner west line instead, or catch special buses that were running to replace train services. The intersection of Illawarra Road and Warburton Street was also closed northbound for a period of time, with police directing traffic and pedestrians around the station.

BUSINESS Business Finance Stumbling blocks
Small business overlooked Small business has largely been overlooked in the Federal Government’s $1 billion clean-technology grants package because most SMEs fall short of the energy use thresholds. The package, unveiled by Industry and Innovation Minister Greg Combet recently, aims to boost capital investment across the manufacturing sector as companies use the grants to buy new plant equipment to reduce their carbon footprint. The lion’s share of the Clean Technology Investment Program, $800 million, will be reserved for general manufacturers who exceed defined annual energy consumer thresholds. The government has announced it will match eligible manufacturers on a dollar-fordollar basis and this, combined with the high Australian dollar, will mean that companies looking to import equipment could be paying about one third of the price they would have otherwise been paying. But small operators will have to be big emitters to qualify and most won’t fall into this category. For many SMEs seeking federal and state grants, emission thresholds might not be the biggest barrier to support. Some owners can’t always afford to allocate precious resources to securing grants.

If you’re planning to visit friends, family or loved ones who live at a distance or going on a journey, it’s likely to be a lot more enjoyable than you expect. The more open minded you are in the weeks ahead the more you will gain out of life.
The Sun &New Moon In Taurus Trines Pluto; April 21st – May 6th.

September 24 to Oct 23
The next two weeks is the ideal time for making important financial decisions. Money worries have been on your mind for some time, but instead of letting your nerves control you, it is important that you listen to an acquaintance who has some excellent advice for you. The coming fortnight is a good time to rid yourself of bad habits, old fears, insecurities and phobias. More importantly it is time to rid yourself of any kind of self pity.

October 24 to Nov 22
The New Moon is coasting along in your opposite sign of Taurus and so from now on you’re going to have to take on board the wants, needs and requests of other people. Recent tensions in your love life can easily be swept to one side – all it takes is a kind word or gesture to make sure you are not found lacking. Friends and acquaintances will also be far more communicative than usually and don’t be surprised if they confide their secrets to you.
sagittarius
Nov 23 to Dec 21
The next fortnight is going to be highly productive when you can make up for lost time. If you are trying to instigate some important changes at work, don’t be too independent as other people’s ideas will trigger your imagination and your plans will fall into place much more easily than expected. This is the ideal time to clear up outstanding problems and to put practices into place to prevent these dilemmas from happening again.

Be ready to enjoy yourself. Once again you seem to be the centre of attention, which always makes you feel special. You are certainly receiving a few signs that seem to mean a lot to you. No matter what complications arise, take some time out for romance or other pleasurable pursuits. Don’t let others persuade you otherwise. Children and younger people will be a delight to be around as they will help you to connect with your own inner child!
With a New Moon in Aquarius there will be plenty of news in connection with family, friends, relatives and people you haven’t seen for some time. It looks as though you will be doing a great deal of entertaining at home, so this may mean having certain business colleagues meet your family. You may decide to brighten up your home. If you know what you are doing that is fine, but if you don’t it would be wise to seek some professional advice.

February 20 to March 20
Invitations from friends and neighbours are likely to come from out of the blue, but you would be wise to grab them with both hands as you will enjoy the occasion more than you expect and will certainly be glad that you went. You are mentally astute and others appreciate your intellectual vitality, so why not let these qualities shine! Conversations will flow easily, so keep your wits about you, be your charming self and you will discover things about others that can used to your advantage!

Staying Healthy
Susan Garrad
Do you have a problem with gas? Q. I often get bloated and suff er from a lot of gas. It’s really embarrassing. What can I do? Here are my top 10 tips for improving your digestion: 1. Avoid sugar, caff eine and alcohol as these alter the pH of the digestive system making it more acidic. 2. Reduce or avoid gluten, a protein found in grains such as wheat, rye, oats and barley. Gluten intolerance is common and leads to bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. 3. Check to see if you have a dairy intolerance by avoiding all dairy for two weeks and then reintroduce it and observe if your digestive symptoms flare. 4. Eat in pleasant surroundings, sitting down and enjoying your food. If you are rushed, you are more likely to eat quickly without chewing properly. 5. Chew your food! Chewing helps to break down your food, easing the burden
on your lower digestive system. 6. Take a good quality probiotic supplement each day. 7. Try not to drink too many fluids at least half an hour before a meal. Th is dilutes the enzymes in your stomach and makes them less able to break down foods and absorb nutrients. 8. Take a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or a squeeze of lemon juice in a small amount of water before a meal to improve your digestion. 9. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing. When we are stressed, our brain shuts down our digestive system. 10. Eat fresh organic food as it contains more nutrition and no pesticides, additives or preservatives. Make an appointment with Naturopath Susan Garrad from Women’s Health Naturally, Summer Hill. Phone 9798 9322 or visit www. womenshealthnaturally.com.au.

Leave the $300 shoes at home
Keeping Fit David Stein I’m not much of a runner but it’s a great feeling jogging along a quiet road in the morning watching the hills play hide and seek in the fog. Feeling cold air hitting your face, while steam rises off your shoulders from the heat trying to escape your body. There is something very meditative about moving along in the same easy repetitive rhythm your ancestors have, for the last couple of million years. It’s not about breaking records or getting huge distances up... just running because it feels good. It’s amazing how many people think they’re not runners. I think some people just forget how. Look at any busy playground, kids run before they can write their name or draw stick figures. There is a great book I encourage all my students to read, Born to run. It’s a factual story about a tribe of Indians who are isolated in the canyons of Mexico where an average 50-year-old running in homemade leather sandals can compete with the rest of the world’s highest level
marathoners. It’s an amazing story that shows it’s not hi-tech training or the gear you use, it actually shows evidence that the more expensive your shoes the more likely your chance of injury. No shoes or old hard ones have helped a lot of people’s injuries go. But what really makes these guys so good is they love running! Fun and simple works best. Start slow – try searching the internet for ‘100 ups’. It’s pretty much walking on the spot and slowly speeding up a bit. Do it barefoot. Search ‘Harvard barefootrunning’. Let your body remember how it used to move, start slow. Then leave the stopwatch and $300 shoes at home and head out somewhere you enjoy. Th is is the important bit. If you aren’t feeling good where your running, it’s not going to last. Drive up to the national park, head down to the waterside at sunset, whatever works for you. Put one goal in your head. It’s not a time or a distance and nothing to do with speed or stride
rate. It’s really easy to remember. It’s this: do whatever you have to do to get a smile on your face. At any stage of your run, take in the view, listen to all the sounds, or lack of. Feel the blood bringing your body alive. But be careful. You might fi nd you want to keep going! Get out there and let me know what it’s like via email.

here’s nothing more satisfying than turning an average house into a stunning home. Whatever your reasons for renovating, you’ll need three things: patience, planning and a well-managed budget. A good starting point for would-be renovators is to look for a property with problems to fi x, and then add value. For example, a lack of storage and light are obvious issues crying out for improvement.
Once you’ve selected your property, the hard work begins. A lot of the time you won’t see where a problem might exist until you start. It’s a hard lesson to learn: things often take twice as long and cost twice as much than you originally thought. Sometimes you will need to bring in the experts. Not only will it save time, it can also save you money in the long run, says the team at Renovation Boys,
Camperdown. “Our team [can] assist you with design and colours, and provide you with a 3D rendering of how your renovation project will look, before you even start,” said Renovation manager, Tim Tokoragi. It’s always a good idea to talk to a broad range of suppliers and tradespeople before you sign up, so you know you are getting the best possible value.

On a bigger Block Hit television series is back, and it s tipped to be better
A
ustralians love a home renovation, almost as much as they love watching other people do it on TV. The country’s favourite renovation show, ‘The Block’, is back for 2012 with a new bunch of contestants and the same old renovation problems. Th is season has been billed as the biggest and toughest yet. With barely a roof over their heads, no running water and dirt floors,
this year’s teams have 10 weeks to restore one of four dilapidated 1800’s South Melbourne terraces. “It’s the biggest block we’ve done, with four of the biggest houses and the most derelict houses I’ve ever seen,” said the show’s host, Scott Cam. Cam says the eclectic bunch of contestants are excited about the challenge, but he knows from experience they will soon realise things
are a lot more diffi cult than they imagined. Contestants will be given a bigger budget this year of $125,000 in cash and vouchers, to reflect the scope of the renovation work required. Each team gets $20,000 to spend on hardware, $10,000 for fl ooring, $10,000 for lighting, $20,000 for a kitchen, $5,000 for a laundry and $20,000 to spend on bathroom fi xtures and fittings.

DEATH MATTEL GET HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER BREAK
L
ocals flocked to Tillman Park on Sunday to support local bands and to enjoy the entertainment at The Break music festival. With crowd numbers up on last year's offering, the 2012 event showcased a range of new local talent playing everything from
folk, rock, Latin, jazz and African-infl uenced tunes. Death Mattel was victorious on the day, winning a slot to play at the Marrickville Festival on Sunday, October 21. Band member, Matt Downey, said he was surprised but pleased to take out the top
prize, which came as a validation of sorts for their new line-up. “We were genuinely surprised to win, we felt that we didn’t stand a chance against some of the other bands,” he said. Downey said being chosen to perform at the Festival was a motivator for the group,
which is made up of Marrickville locals. Next year, The Break will no longer exist as a stand-alone event but will be incorporated into the Marrickville Festival. Marrickville Council has resolved to create a Tempe-Sydenham community festival for “families to enjoy”.

TIGER RUMBLINGS Fans need to pull their head in
Troy Dodds
F
inally a win for the Wests Tigers but before we get too excited, let’s realise just how poorly Penrith is going at the moment. Th ey’re in all sorts and the Tigers never really got out of second gear. Th ere’s bigger tests to come... I’m probably just a nark but I don’t agree with stopping the NRL for a Test match and a worthless City v Country clash. Sure, it happens in a number of successful overseas sports, but to have club football off our screens and out of our grounds for an entire weekend just seven rounds in doesn’t make sense to me, particularly when the Test is overseas and the other rep match is in country NSW. Panthers officials spent hours deleting abusive comments off social media following the 30-0 loss to the Tigers. Frustration is one thing but abusive behaviour is another and some fans need to pull their heads in. I was surprised to see that Panthers GM Phil Gould co-commentated on the game between Penrith and Wests Tigers on Channel 9 last Sunday. It’s awkward for Penrith fans, probably frustrating for Tigers fans and just doesn’t sit well as an overall situation. No matter what circumstances led to Gus ending
up in the commentary box last Sunday, it’s an ugly look for Penrith to have the face of the game in the region giving opinion about on-field performance, given he rarely talks about the on-field results in his role with the Panthers. It quite simply shouldn’t happen again. These days technology rules in rugby league, so use your smart phone to keep updated with the Tigers. Check out the Tigers iPhone and Android apps from the relevant smart phone app stores. Gareth Ellis and Chris Heighington will be at the Rebel Sport Broadway store next Thursday, April 26. Th e boys will be available from 6pm to 7pm to sign autographs and pose for photos as part of a promotion organised by our official compression partner 2XU. Come along to meet the guys and snaffle a giveaway or two... some goodies from both the Wests Tigers and 2XU will be up for grabs, including match day tickets and loads more. Apparently the Kangaroos consider our very own Benji Marshall to be a threat ahead of tonight’s Test between New Zealand and Australia. Halves Benji Marshall and Shaun Johnson should put on a good show!
POSITION VACANT TELEPHONE SALESPERSON An exciting opportunity exists to join the team Previous newspaper sales experience preferred but not essential. A bubbly personality with good communication skills essential as is a desire to succeed.

The Newtown Jets, united in a family-friendly approach.
Clubs foster responsible messages New program promoting responsible service of alcohol helps to break link between sport and drinking, says Mayor
A
new program about responsible drinking being rolled out in local sporting clubs is proving to be an antidote to potentially irresponsible and reckless behaviour. The Good Sports Program, run by the Australian Drug Foundation, is a national initiative that aims to promote the responsible service and consumption of alcohol at
community sporting events. Eight local clubs have been involved in the program since it was launched by Marrickville Council in October 2010. The Newtown Jets is one such club, having participated in the program since its inception. It’s now reaping the benefits, according to Director of Operations, Stuart McCarthy. “We have always strived to provide a
family friendly atmosphere at Th e Newtown Jets home games,” McCarthy said. “The Good Sports Program reinforced the values of our club.” Mayor of Marrickville, Morris Hanna, said the Good Sports Program helps to break the link between playing sport and drinking alcohol to excessive and unsafe levels. “[The program] helps improve the safety
and health of the community by reducing alcohol-related incidents such as binge and under-age drinking and drink driving,” Cr Hanna said. Clubs that would like to be involved should register their interest with Good Sports on 9972 3160. What are your thoughts? Email louise. bourke@innercityweekender.com.au.
