housands of people packed out Martin Place on Wednesday morning for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service, the fi rst without any WWI Diggers present. Drums sounded at 4.15am to begin the ceremony to mark the 97th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing at ANZAC Cove. Following prayers and a call to remember those who are serving in confl ict and peacekeeping missions around the world, Real Admiral, Tim Barrett, used his official address to pay tribute to all Australians who had served in war. “It was on this day that Australia’s identity was forged,” Admiral Barrett said. “It is the ANZAC spirit that shows us not who we intrinsically are, but who we want to be.” Wreaths were laid by guests including NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell, Federal Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, NSW Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione, and consular representatives from New Zealand, Canada and Turkey. Marrickville was represented by the local RSL organisation, with Army officers carrying the banner during proceedings. Locally, a dawn service was held at the Tempe Bus Depot, which included a sausage sizzle breakfast after the formalities. Later in the day, local pubs including Newtown’s Courthouse attracted large crowds for the traditional afternoon two-up.

First connecting to a sound, then when they spin around in those wonderful red chairs, connecting to a person. For me, it is a poignant reminder that the power of a genuine connection between human beings supersedes everything. That’s why the show is making so many of us a little teary! Social media and technology are wonderful tools, but human connection is the most authentic and most important way to communicate, bar none. Yasi via social media were also compelling, and another way we could report the disasters that beset Queensland last year. And yes, we all know how easy a text message can be to get out of a sticky situation or even potentially sow the early seeds of a potential romance. While writing this column, I witnessed a colleague who was excited when her phone beeped hoping it was a text from a romantic interest – alas, it wasn’t. My point being, don’t ever forget the importance of human connection, which brings me to the wonderful Channel Nine program, ‘The Voice’. Morris is shutting up shop
After 35 years, Marrickville Mayor decides to close his menswear store on Marrickville Road After some 35 years on Marrickville Road, Maurice Menswear will be closing its doors. But owner, Morris Hanna, says it won't be the end for him, with new ideas in the mix. BY LOUISE BOURKE
M
orris Hanna, Marrickville’s Mayor and a business owner on Marrickville Road for more than 35 years, is shutting up shop. ‘Closing down’ signs have appeared on the windows of Cr Hanna’s Maurice Menswear store and he will close the doors as soon as the stock is cleared. “I’ve been here for 35 years in the same business, so I thought it’s about time for a change,” he said. But it won’t spell the end for Cr Hanna in Marrickville. “Yes, I’m staying here, I want to do something different in the area… I’m planning to stay in Marrickville,” he said. Maurice Menswear, which has been operating on Marrickville Road for all of its 35 years, sells designer clothing. Earlier this year, Cr Hanna told the Inner City Weekender that parking along the Marrickville Road shopping strip was a major issue for business owners, with customers fi nding it hard to get a park. When asked this week whether he is confident about future of shopping in the area, Cr Hanna said he was very confi dent and had faith in the local community.

N
e w t o w n ’ s sustainability resource centre, Th e Watershed, has been given a new name: the Green Living Centre. The 218 King Street premises has also received a makeover, with new signage and branding on its shopfront. The revamp reflects the centre’s wider interest in sustainability and lifestyle rather than solely focusing
on water. City of Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, believes the change of name will attract more visitors to the joint City of Sydney and Marrickville Council resource centre. “The Green Living Centre will be an even greater asset to the local community with a broader range of expertise and resources to help residents live more sustainably,” she said. Marrickville Mayor,
Morris Hanna, said that while the Watershed had always been an innovative community hub for learning about sustainable living, the new name is a better fi t for the “huge range of activities, events and information available.” The centre also launched a unique and exciting Bike Library in 2010, which includes a fl eet of specialist cargo bikes available for loan.

L
ocal Greens Councillors have praised Bob Brown for his work in establishing and building the Greens party and his magnanimity in stepping down from the leadership. “Bob Brown’s retirement is a magnanimous step characteristic of Bob…[he] has made an enormous
contribution to Australian society and the environment and we are a better country for his contribution,” said Marrickville Greens Councillor, Max Phillips. Leichardt Mayor, Rochelle Porteous, said Senator Brown will be remembered for his “integrity and honesty” as leader. In a surprise move, Senator Brown resigned the leadership of the Australian Greens party earlier this
month and will leave the parliament in June. Grayndler MP, Anthony Albanese, praised the retiring leader but said he was concerned that Bob Brown’s departure will see “more wacky ideological positions… gain more infl uence”. The new Greens leader is Senator Christine Milne, another Tasmanian and founding member of the Greens, who will preside over the 10,000 strong party.

Hospitals have a say Health Minister launches strategic plan for health in inner west
T
he Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) has become the first in the state to launch a strategic plan that puts staff , patients and community members at the heart of decision-making. The program contains a series of major plans to help set the agenda in local healthcare and hospitals for the next five years. Minister for Health and Medical Research, Jillian Skinner, launched the program on Tuesday.
“Believing that [planning] needed to be considered and shaped by [SLHD’s] major stakeholders – staff and members of the community – the district embarked upon an ambitious staff and community consultation process,” Mrs Skinner said. “I commend Sydney Local Health District for its leadership, commitment, focus and vision.” The consultation forums were held across four hospitals – RPA, Canterbury, Concord and Balmain
– and participants were invited to offer opinions on patient, staff , community, research, education and health services goals. The SLHD will continue to use the information gathered from consultation with patients and staff in the inner west to improve its provision of healthcare services. The reforms will cover the key delivery areas of patients, staff , community, services, education, research, and the organisation.
Police will allege in court that on Friday, April 6, an indecent photo was uploaded to Facebook by a 19-year-old Little Bay man after the dissolution of his relationship with a 17-year-old woman. The young woman reported the matter to Newtown Police after being made aware of the photo. The 19-year-old was arrested and charged with Filming a Person in Private Act without Consent and using a carriage service to harass. The photo was successfully removed from Facebook and the man was granted conditional bail. He will appear before Waverley Local Court on May 23. Police are reminding the community of the serious repercussions of sending or creating naked or semi-naked images of yourself or anyone else. Charges relating to the associated offences are serious and can be initiated many years after the picture was taken. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Caught in act: Man urinates on bottle shop
A 33-year-old man was issued with an infringement notice from Marrickville Police after he was found urinating on a door at Liquorland on Despointes Street,

Drink driving: Marrickville man busted
A 32-year-old man from Marrickville was charged for lowrange drink driving on Saturday, April 21. At 11.18pm, Marrickville Police stopped the driver on Wemyss Street, Stanmore, for a random breath test. Th e man returned a positive reading and was conveyed to Newtown Police Station for breath analysis. The man returned a reading of 0.070 grams of alcohol and was issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice for drive with low-range prescribed concentration of alcohol. The man will appear at Newtown Local Court later this month. Police wish to remind drivers to be mindful of the types and sizes of alcoholic drinks they consume. S
ydney’s bikie violence came to Newtown last week when a police paddy wagon was set alight outside a King Street tattoo parlour in the early hours of Friday morning. The owner of the tattoo parlour, Hells Angels member Scott Allen Orrock, was charged this week. It is understood that Mr Orrock, 47, complained about the presence of the vehicle outside his premises hours
before it was set alight. Newtown Police and fi re crews were then called to the scene at about 3am where they found the burning vehicle. “The fi re was quickly extinguished but not before the vehicle sustained significant damage,” a spokesperson from Newtown Police said. Newtown Detectives, in conjunction with Detectives from the State Crime
Command’s Gangs Squad, investigated the incident. Police were guarding the King Street premises on Friday while additional officers patrolled the area over the weekend, according to NSW Police Assistant Commissioner, Nick Kaldas. Mr Orrock appeared at Sydney Local Court yesterday where he was granted $10,000 bail and will be required to report to Marrickville Police daily.

R
esidents of Holmwood Street in Newtown are getting fed up with a number of unregistered and abandoned cars taking up valuable parking space in their street. Two cars parked on the street appear to have been abandoned for years. One of which became unregistered in February 2010, while the
other has no registration sticker. “These cars are taking up valuable parking spaces in our streets,” said concerned resident, David. “A few residents are getting pretty fed up with the fact that these cars are allowed to just sit here.” Adding to David’s frustration is the fact he has received parking infringement notices at times when he couldn’t secure a
park on his own street. A Marrickville Council spokesperson said Council has to be notifi ed of the cars to be able to do anything about them. Of the six abandoned cars reported on Holmwood Street this year, “two have been dealt with, two are in the process, and two came in yesterday”. Council attempts to contact the owners before removing the vehicles.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT ➤ Following public exhibition and feedback, Council now has a Recreation Needs Research: Strategic Directions for Marrickville report which will form the basis of a new Recreation Strategy. Social research consulting firm, Miller Group, conducted extensive community consultation during July and August of 2011. A total of 914 community members, or 1.27 per cent of the LGA population, took part. Feedback for improvements to current facilities and spaces included better presentation and management of playgrounds, better lighting and more trees, more facilities for dog-walkers, cyclists and community gardeners, and more events and festivals. Issues to emerge include the need for additional and improved facilities for young people and time-poor 30-50-year-olds, and the recreation needs of older people. The report is on public exhibition until Wednesday, June 6 and comments are invited. For more information call Council’s Recreation Coordinator on 9335 2037. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Facebook is the new key to keeping the Marrickville community safe
P
olice are encouraging everyone to get involved in ‘Project Eyewatch’, an internet-based Neighbourhood Watch for the 21st century that is designed to share information between police and the community. All 80 NSW Commands have implemented the Eyewatch program, using Facebook pages to facilitate information exchange between police and the local community. “It seems Australians lead busier lives than they ever have
before – that’s why it makes sense to update the Neighbourhood Watch concept,” said Marrickville Police Superintendent, Gregory Peters. “Project Eyewatch will allow us to talk about police activity and operational outcomes, to post images of people we’d like to speak to regarding crimes and to reinforce our public messages like personal responsibility when it comes to drinking.” Instead of attending community meetings, police are asking
people to follow the Marrickville Police Facebook page and share information. Th e page, which can be found by searching for ‘Marrickville Local Area Command’, currently has 186 likes. “I would urge everyone to support this initiative and help keep Marrickville a safe place,” said Spt. Peters. Crimes should still be reported by calling local police, Triple Zero or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 to provide anonymous information.
➤ Expressions of interest are still open for regular venue hire of council’s halls and facilities for the period July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. Whether you are looking for a large hall for a concert, wedding or party, or just need a room to hold a regular community group meeting, Council has a range of facilities available for residents’ use. Head to the Council’s website to view hall details or make a booking. Enquiries regarding the booking of a community facility should be directed to Council's Citizen’s Service Centre on 9335 2222 or by emailing council@marrickville.nsw.gov.au . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ➤ Marrickville homeowners and developers can learn more about Council’s development application (DA) process, and the importance of sustainable design, at a free information night on Monday, April 30 from 6pm-8pm. Guest speaker Anthony Nolan from Kennedy Associates Architects will discuss the importance of creating an energy efficient home, while Council staff will talk about the new Development Advisory and Lodgement Services (DALS).

10 BUSINESS Business Finance Confidence low
Worrying sign for businesses Economic confi dence among small business owners is at its lowest point in two-and-a-half years, and many don’t expect conditions to improve this year, according to a new survey. The MYOB Business Monitor report found less than 20 per cent of the 1,043 SME owners and managers surveyed nationally expect the domestic economic to improve within 12 months. Th is is the lowest number since the onset of the global fi nancial crisis. In a worrying sign for jobs growth, most small business owners said they had no plans to make changes to their business this year in regards to staffi ng, research and development or expanding into foreign markets. While 20 per cent said their revenue lifted in the past year, almost twice that – 38 per cent – said their revenue fell in the same period. It’s a stark reminder that SMEs, especially those in NSW and Victoria are still doing it tough. But there is a way to survive the next 12 months and kick start a sluggish small business. One good fi rst step is to give your business a “fi nancial health check”. Finance can be a big culprit to poor performance; using the wrong business accounts can stunt your business growth as much as cash flow issues caused by a few late paying clients.

The big questions Get used to being asked for all the juicy wedding details

hile there are many things you know will happen when you become engaged (like being deliriously happy and staring at your ring all the time), there are also many things that newly engaged couples will find out that they perhaps weren’t expecting. The fi rst is the sheer number of times you will be asked about how it happened. Get used to it. Friends and
family and others who care about you as a couple will want to hear all the proposal details. Find a story you’re both happy with and stick to it. Another, which comes only shortly after being asked about the proposal, is whether you have set a date yet and where the wedding will be. You are under no obligation to reveal the full extent of your planning or
lack-thereof, so tell people a rough geographic area you’re thinking and when (e.g. “Paris in June”) as it satisfies them and gets you off the hook. Finally, your relationship will feel diff erent, no matter whether you’ve been together for two years or 10. You’ve made a big commitment to one another and you’re joined in planning for not only your wedding but also your future.

Brilliant ideas will strike you during the next few weeks. It will be great fun to be so inventive and clever, so take note of the thoughts that are rushing through your brain in case you forget them later on. You will certainly enjoy amassing knowledge, whether you’re looking up reference books, surfing the net or listening to someone’s fascinating stories. There will be plenty to keep your brain occupied, and you’ll want to add to this by reading.

Pay attention to your health during the next few weeks, especially if it means having some symptoms investigated by your doctor or giving up a habit that doesn’t do you any good. Be wary of stepping on egos at work – draw a line under any difficulties you are having with a colleague or client, even if you have to be the one who makes the first move. Relationships at home are likely to be in a bit of a fog, maybe you aren’t sure what a loved wants from you?

Friends enrich your world in many ways during the next few weeks, both as chums you can rely on and as people who help you to enjoy yourself. Take a look in your diary to see how many social events you’ve got lined up and start arranging a few more if necessary. There will certainly be days when you want to be alone but you’ll also have phases in which it will be good to mix with kindred spirits. You’ll naturally gravitate towards people who respect your sensitive side.

Between now and May 10 you’ll enjoy forging greater links with people who are much older or more influential than you. You’ll get a lot of satisfaction from a job well done, so you will put your heart and soul into everything you do. Mind you, the fact that an influential person is watching may have something to do with it! You long to impress them with your prowess and talents, perhaps because you crave their praise or you secretly find them attractive.

If you are dealing with a problem involving red tape or money, someone in authority will be surprisingly helpful, perhaps giving you the protection, or some inside advice to help sort out a difficult situation.

HOW OUR WASTE SERVICES CREWS HAVE LET US ALL DOWN
February 20 to March 20
This is the ideal time to look into investing your money carefully or to consider building a property portfolio. If you’re feeling brave enough, you should get out all your recent credit card receipts and cheque stubs, and then total up how much you’ve spent. It is far better to know the truth than to pretend everything is all right. This is the ideal time for working out a budget or some other financial strategy, maybe you should talk to an expert!
Councillor Dimitrios Thanos
First things first: Marrickville Council is not planning to outsource the garbage removal for our area. The United Services Union (USU) would like you to believe that Council is after their jobs. In actual fact, at this stage, all I would like are some answers to some very reasonable questions. Questions about waste. Questions about inefficiency.
Here are some facts about Council’s Garbage Collection Service: Council Garbage Collection crews work on the principle of job and finish, which means they work an average of 5.5 hours a day and get paid for 8.5 hours a day for a 19 day month. The average sick leave is 3.6 weeks per annum. The industry average for bin lifts is 1200 to 1500 per day, Council staff collect 950 bins per day. This section of Council’s workers is comprised of 25 staff. However, they are responsible for 89 per cent of Workers’ Compensation Claims Costs. The premium for 2012/2013 is projected to be $1,810,028. The workers’ compensation premium for all Council workers, without resource recovery staff, would be $691,440. In other words if Council contracted out the resource recovery service it would save our residents $1,118,588 just from workers compensation premiums. If Council outsourced its waste collection service and maintained the current standard of service, it is estimated that it would cost Council $1.8 million per annum less than the current service. If we then factor in the saving in workers’ compensation premiums of $1.1 million we end up with the rather substantial amount of up to $2.9 million per annum. The enterprise bargain agreement (EBA) that most resource recovery staff work under expired in 2006. Management has attempted to discuss productivity increases with the USU since 2005 and the USU has refused to talk about any change that would increase the very low output by this section of Council’s workforce.
It is my view that it is in the public interest for Council to have an efficient workforce. It is my view that ratepayers should not be paying an excessive amount for a service that could be provided by a different service provider at significant cost reductions. It is also my view that the USU has had long enough to negotiate with management for a fair employment agreement - one which pays workers a fair wage for the hours they work but at the same time doesn’t take advantage of the ratepayers who need to foot the bill. All of the above notwithstanding, no-one in Council has ever formally moved a motion requesting that the Garbage Services be outsourced. In fact management and Councillors have always said that their preferred outcome is to keep the service in-house but with productivity increases. The USU has commenced leaflet drops and a misinformation campaign about Council’s intentions because Councillors dared to ask questions about the efficiency and effectiveness of the Garbage Crews’ work methods - exposing their disgracefully low productivity levels to the public. After a lot of consideration and looking at all of the information at hand, I have formed the view that Council must take action if the USU and the Workers continue to refuse reasonable requests for productivity increases. Then, and only then, should Council seriously consider outsourcing as an option. Authorised by Dimitrios Thanos 504 Marrickville Rd Dulwich Hill NSW 2203 (02) 9569 0199

Staying Healthy
Susan Garrad
Your not born with will power
Kids sick with colds Q. My 6 -yea r-old daughter is always seems to be sick with colds. What can I do to boost her immune system? Prevention is the best medicine when it comes to immunity. Th ese simple steps may help: • Give her plenty of vitamin C: 100 to 250 mg per day is a good idea. • Stay away from sugar: Sugar inhibits the immune system, leaving children more vulnerable to infections. • Make sure she gets some sun as Vitamin D is essential for a strong immune system. Colds are self-limited illnesses, but their symptoms can be annoying and frustrating. So though a cold will naturally run its course, if you want to relieve your daughter’s discomfort, try these tips: Drink up: Make sure your child gets plenty of fl uids in order to maintain water balance and to thin secretions. Avoid sugary drinks in favour of water
or a comforting chicken broth. • Eat healthy: Avoid giving sick children sugar and excessively fatty foods, as they are known to dip immune function. • Don’t dry out: A warm, humid environment created by a humidifi er may provide some comfort while riding out a cold. • Sleep it off: Make sure your sick child gets plenty of rest. • Sweeten the deal: One exception to the no-sugar rule – honey may ease cough and cold symptoms especially at night when an annoying cough may keep your child awake. Honey has antimicrobial, antioxidant and other properties that can soothe irritated mucous membranes. One teaspoon dissolved in the mouth. Echinacea and zinc are also powerful immune boosters, but should only be prescribed by a health professional. Susan Garrad is from Women’s Health Naturally, Summer Hill. THE INNER CITY WEEKENDER
Keeping Fit David Stein A common question asked of trainers is what have I got to cut out to lose weight or get healthy? I fi nd a much more effective answer than giving a list of foods not to eat is a few items that they really should be eating. As soon as I say to someone don’t eat that whole block of chocolate in your pantry, guess what they are focusing on all day? What if I said eat whatever you like, but tomorrow I want you to get at least one small plate of a leafy salad in somewhere? If they commit to picking up a few ingredients on the way home if they don’t have them, it could be anything they like. Have a walk around the green grocers. Go bananas or at least eat one. There is a lot more to put in a salad than a bit of old lettuce and tomato. So they buy a few things that they like the look of, take it home and even chuck a few pieces in a container ready for work. Chances are, that bit of advice is more likely to get done than the ‘never eat’ chocolate suggestion. And the really good bit is if we make a small commitment like that and stick it out, it has a great empowering effect on our decision to do more
positive things. It really reinforces that we are in control of every single thing we put in our mouth. However, if we make some sort of incredibly hard-to-stick-to goal, and then fail to complete it, we get the opposite effect and become a bit disempowered and start thinking that maybe we just can’t do anything we should do, maybe we just don’t have enough willpower. I can tell you, even working with world class athletes, from the moaning and
excuses they have been known to offer me at times, willpower is not something you’re born with and never have to work at. Everyone has good and bad days. So don’t set yourself up for a fall with some ideal lofty goal that isn’t realistic. Get honest. Th ink what is one thing that I could eat tomorrow that I know will be good for me? Whether it’s an apple or a fresh organic garden salad with a grass fed medium rare steak.

n office manager, electrician, builder, nurse, retired engineer, obstetrician, computer head, land rights lawyer and an accountant got together for a school fundraiser five years ago and today, they’re still going. The Ukes of Hazzard is made up of Marrickville locals who love having a play and sing.
Already with a strong local following, the group performs a diverse range of music that always seems to get a crowd up on their feet. “We started as a joke for a fundraiser,” said group member, Sally Wilson. “Our diverse song choices are enjoyed by a wide age range… played on traditional ukelele, banjo ukelele, double bass, harmonica, trumpet, violin,
accordion.” The group’s repertoire is constantly evolving and covers the likes of Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Talking Heads, Nancy Sinatra, Little Birdy and Johnny Cash. TIGER RUMBLINGS Troy Dodds

fter the promising 30-0 defeat of Penrith a few weeks back, the real key now is to get consecutive wins for the fi rst time this season. Th e Eels should be easy to beat, but they’ll win more games eventually and we really need to be on our game. The Storm salary cap scandal still won’t go away, and it also has impacts on other clubs. Th e Rugby League Accredited Player Agents Scheme’s committee has concluded its consideration of the show-cause notices given to four player agents alleging involvement in salary cap breaches by the Melbourne Storm club. The committee found that each of the agents had breached the rules of the scheme and the Code of Ethics for accredited agents. The accreditation of agents David Riolo, George Mimis and Isaac Moses was suspended until October 31, 2012. Allan Gainey was issued with a caution. NSW Rugby League Game Development Unit ambassador, Nathan Hindmarsh, will be among the NRL stars to launch a significant sponsorship for rugby league in western Sydney today. Hindmarsh and fellow western Sydney ambassadors Luke Lewis (Panthers) and Joel Reddy (Wests Tigers) will be at Caddies Creek Public School near
The Eels should be easy to beat Glenwood for the announcement of the nation’s leading energy retailer, Origin, as a sponsor for the NSW Rugby League Western Sydney Game Development Unit. Th e event will outline how the sponsorship will help fund the further growth of rugby league in the region – including the extended roll out of Hindmarsh’s own junior development program. More than 50 children from Caddies Creek Public School, who will benefit from Origin’s investment in rugby league in the west, will participate in a clinic to be led by the players. NSWRL General Manager, Geoff Carr, and NRL General Manager, Game Integration and Development, Andrew Hill, will also be in attendance. If the Tigers don’t turn things around and get their season on the right track, I wonder how patient Tim Sheens will be with the media commitments of his players. Benji Marshall and Beau Ryan are regulars on ‘The Footy Show’ and it may not be the best image for the club to have players dedicating so much time to TV work if the team is struggling on the field. What about the great footy on ANZAC Day? If only other clubs got their turn to share in this great footy tradition.
