arrickville Council has given the go ahead for the refurbishment of Petersham’s Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre, agreeing last week to put the work out to tender. It is the second time the project to refurbish the pool has made it to this point – in May 2011, levels of contamination found at the site during preparations for tender halted the process. Councillors also reconfi rmed last week that the pool should be reduced to 25-metres in length, in line with FINA regulations. Petersham local, Th erese Spruhan, who swims at the pool was relieved that the facility would receive the promised upgrade. “While many of the regulars will be sad to see the end of the current 33-metre pool, I am pleased that Marrickville Council has made a commitment to maintaining a community pool in Petersham Park,” she said. Extra funds were allocated in the Budget to take into account the new scope of work, which is required for the extensive remediation of the site and the planned refurbishment work. While the tender process will confi rm when the pool will be closed for construction, it is most likely to be this coming summer.

How much do you earn a week? Actually, here’s a better question – do you reckon you could get by with a weekly income of just $262? I assume you’re like me and think that is laughable, ridiculous, and quite simply downright impossible. Well here’s a little fact for you: that is the exact amount of money a multitude of age pensioners are forced to live off each week. That’s what you get if you’re a couple, but if you’re single the amount jumps to a whopping (please note sarcasm) $347 a week. I’d heard my grandad complain when I was growing up about how hard it was for he and his wife to get by each week, but truth be told, I thought he was just whingeing. But I nearly fell off my chair when I actually discovered a few days ago just how little they have to get by on each week. That amount of money would not even cover my weekly rent – let alone then paying for my food,
THE INNER CITY WEEKENDER
an association with power bills, and heaven forbid, a beer at the end of the week as well. And actually far be it from whingeing, I now think our senior citizens take this unenviable fi nancial challenge with great grace. There’s a certain stoicism amongst older generations when it comes to these kind of issues – a lot of them grew up doing it very tough, and again now they accept their current lot in life and simply make do as best as possible. Quite frankly though, I think they deserve better than just being given a measly sum of money and told to be thankful. Admittedly, the pension already takes a signifi cant chunk of our annual budget – more than two million Australians receive the age pension, at a cost of $32 billion a year to the Federal Government. Some critics say that we should be actually reducing the amount of support we provide to seniors – their theory is pretty simple: if they
haven’t saved for retirement then it’s their own fault. But that’s pretty ridiculous really. Wind the clock back 30 years and there were no compulsory superannuation programs for employers, in fact little thought was given to how people would get by at the end of their working days. The simple fact of the matter is that life expectancies back then were not that great and people figured that by the time they had retired, they realistically probably only had to get by for another five or 10 years. These days it’s not uncommon for people to have another 30 good years after they fi nish up working. These years shouldn’t be some sort of eternal game of penny pinching. It’s time we looked at signifi cantly increasing the pension. These people looked after our country for decades and helped to make it the thriving economy it is today. It’s time we did the same.

Stoner says he is listening
But groups say coal seam gas mining is the unsustainable invasion of the mining industry BY LOUISE BOURKE
T
housands of anti-coal seam gas protestors marched on State Parliament on Tuesday morning to rally against the NSW Government’s Strategic Regional Land Use Plan (SRLUP). The unlikely alliance of Greens members, farmers, conservationists and the Country Women’s Association (CWA) carried banners and placards, chanting “City and country, united we stand, protect our water, protect our land”. “One of the strengths of our group is the diversity of the people united against Coal Seam Gas,” said the president of Stop CSG Sydney, Jacinta Green. “To see the diversity of our group reflected in the groups supporting the May 1 rally brings home the reality that people everywhere… are united against the unsustainable invasion of the mining industry in NSW.” Ms Green said it was disturbing that despite promises from the government, inner city gas wells and urban areas were not considered in the draft SRLUP. Dart Energy currently holds an exploration license for a coal seam gas mine at St Peters. Deputy Premier, Andrew Stoner, was heckled when he told the assembly that the government was listening to “each and every one of you”. The government maintains that its draft SRLUP is fair and will protect the state’s food producing regions.

Paying respects Students and MP observe minute s silence for ANZACs BY LOUISE BOURKE
M
arrickville MP, Carmel Tebbutt, attended an ANZAC Day service at Marrickville Public School last Friday. She was joined by senior representatives from Marrickville Police, Fire and Rescue and the Department of Education. Ms Tebbutt addressed the assembly of students,
telling them that while war has proved to be a horrible exercise, it is sometimes necessary to protect our ideals and way of life. Speaking about the legacy of the ANZACs who landed at Gallipoli in 1915, Ms Tebbutt said they proved “it’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s about how you behave along the way that is important”. Wreaths were laid by students and guests under the flagpole, where flags had been
lowered to half-mast. The Last Post sounded following the reading of the oath and the students observed a minute’s silence. School Principal, Kerry Chambers, thanked Ms Tebbutt for her presence at the event, which the school has run with the assistance of past parent, Chris Burgess, for the nine years. The service wrapped up the local ANZAC Day celebrations in the area.

P O LI CE SNAP SH OT Bear hug: Taxi driver threatened with knife
A 29-year-old male taxi driver from Marrickville was threatened last Sunday night when he picked up an unknown offender from Sydenham. At about 6.10pm on April 29, the taxi driver drove the offender to Morgan Street, Petersham where the offender demanded his change for the taxi fare, before holding the driver in a bear hug and threatening to stab him with a knife. Th e driver complied with the offender’s requests before the offender took off with the proceeds. Th e taxi driver was left shaken but unharmed. Th e identity of the offender still remains unknown and further investigations are being conducted. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

More than 5,000 bottles brought to Steel Park in scheme campaign
C
aptain James Cook joined hundreds of locals at Steel Park on Saturday to demonstrate how a container deposit scheme could help clean up Sydney’s rubbish-choked waterways. The unlikely visitor urged the Federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke, to demand action on a national program. “Captain Cook’s return highlights just how badly the river and many other urban streams in Australia…
continue to be polluted with plastic bottles and aluminium cans,” said Cooks River Valley Association (CRVA) President, Judy Pincus. “Th is pollution would largely disappear if it weren’t for the resistance by beverage companies to a container deposit scheme, and lack of action by governments.” More than 5,000 bottles were bought to Steel Park on the day, with the CRVA refunding people 10 cents per bottle to illustrate how the
scheme would work. With more than 8 billion beverage containers polluting the environment and waterways every year, Jeff Angel from the Total Environment Centre said something needed to be done immediately. “We’re calling on Tony Burke to lead the environment ministers in an historic decision to implement a national container deposit scheme, which will clean up this mess quickly and effectively,” he said.
Shonky business: Man doesn t deliver goods
On Friday, April 27, a 27-yearold male from Marrickville was approached by an unknown offender and agreed to buy an iphone4 for an amount of money. Th e o ffender asked the man to wait a couple of minutes
and stated he would return shortly with the property, which he failed to do. Th e man provided police with a description of the offender and further investigations will be conducted to establish the identity of the male. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

There has been an increase in bikerelated thefts in the Marrickville and Dulwich Hill areas in the last month. Th e majority of these bike thefts occur outside in public areas, particularly near train stations, between 2pm and 8pm weekdays. Th ere are several steps you can take to minimise the risk of bike theft happening to you. Championing falls Local health network raises awareness about injuries from falls
W
ith injuries from falls a major cause of hospitalisation and loss of independence for people over 65, the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) is creating awareness about safe practices. New strategies aimed at preventing falls in older people were unveiled at the SLHD inaugural ‘Championing Falls in April’ forum last week. “Falls may cause injury, disability and even premature death,” said
SLHD Nurse Educator, Linda Kelly. “Even if there is no injury, people who fall may develop a fear of falling resulting in a loss of confi dence in walking, which will restrict their everyday functioning, independence and quality of life.” Ms Kelly said SLHD staff were implementing innovative programs to reduce fall injury and unnecessary length of stay in hospital. “We are also working towards ensuring that upon discharge from
the facility, the management of falls risk is continued to prevent an unnecessary falls-related readmission.” Everyone can do their part to help prevent injuries resulting from falls, including encouraging exercise or by simply assisting people who are having diffi culty walking. To fi nd the nearest Falls Prevention Exercise Program to your home, visit www.activeandhealthy. nsw.gov.au.

Construction is estimated to take four weeks with a newly refurbished Customer Service Centre scheduled to open on June 4. Council is refurbishing the ground floor in order to improve access and customer service support for residents as well as providing additional office space and meeting rooms for staff and the community. Business of the week Best of Blooms
Lower turnovers
But there is some good news Uncertainty over interest rates and a stubbornly-strong Australian dollar are weighing on SMEs, a new Dun & Bradstreet survey shows. As a result, one-in-four businesses are factoring in a lower turnover for the September quarter. Since the onset of the global financial crisis Australia has remained largely immune to global downturn, but this is only because of the resource sector. But there was some good news this week in the shape of a 50 basis point rate cut announced by the Reserve Bank, bringing the cash rate to just 3.75 per cent. But the question still remains – will the banks pass on rate cuts to SME customers? Th e last few years have seen rates for small business loans drift relatively higher. But most SME customers are either using residential property as security, or have a home loan of their own, so rates on home loans really matter. The reality is that you can’t infl uence the major banks’ decision to pass on a rate cut (unless enough customers leave). But what you can do is look for a better deal. And if the banks follow suit? Take advantage of the situation. If you’re not struggling, take the savings from your rate cut and put it straight back into your loan.

Anything of an intimate nature – from love affairs to legal matters or finances – comes under your scrutiny. Your intuition is heightened and you’ll be able to use an intelligent approach to all these matters. You don’t have to tackle these situations alone as there are sympathetic and supportive people within your circle who are ready to be there for you. The Full Moon on the 6th warns you to be careful of making any sudden moves regarding finances.
scorpio
October 24 to Nov 22
There is a heavy emphasis on relationships and you’ll be much more giving than is usually the case and other people are going to be impressed. If someone close to you is in trouble you’ll be the one riding to the rescue and gleaning the praise at a later date. The Full Moon in Scorpio on the 6th puts you in a position to run rings around those who have doubted you in the past. That doesn’t mean however, that you should demand more than you deserve.
sagittarius
Nov 23 to Dec 21
This is a time of sheer hard slog, so roll up your sleeves and pitch in. You’re turning into a wheeler and dealer, not just at work but at home, too. New rules and routines could really stick, so make them work in your favour. If you’re on a budget, why not reassess all those little extras and scout around for better deals? The Full Moon on the 6th falls in the secretive part of your chart and you must make sure you are not being your own worst enemy.

January 21 to Feb 19
Your social life steps up a gear and romance is certainly on your mind. If you’re single, a friend is about to do some interesting matchmaking with a passionate person who loves food. Stock up those cupboards and prepare for fun. The Full Moon on the 6th indicates tension amongst your friends and acquaintances, so be very wary of insulting somebody who’s friendship you value. The New Moon on the 20th indicates a fresh start or interesting new project is likely at work.
There is a great deal of activity on the home and property front, so this is the ideal time for family discussions, home entertainment, renovations, and the buying or selling of property. Mars fires up your competitive streak. Games and sporting events may reel you in, but tone it down on the singles scene. The Full Moon on the 10th warns you not to push other people at work beyond their limits or you’ll be creating a great deal of unpleasantness.

February 20 to March 20
It’s all about the power of positive thinking this month – believe in yourself and good things will come your way. If you’re out socialising, look your best as you’ll be whisked away to a glamorous gathering. On the career front it will be relatively easy to get on the right side of influential people. The Full Moon on the 6th warns you not to be a gluten, if you do you’ll suffer from indigestion. The New Moon on the 20th is the ideal time to reconnect with people from your past and for fresh starts.

Underactive thyroid issues Q. I have recently been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I am not on any medication for it yet. Is there anything I can take that is natural to support my thyroid and make me feel better? At the moment I am feeling very tired. A. One of the main symptoms of an underactive thyroid gland is fatigue, so it’s no surprise that you are feeling tired. Other symptoms include: weight gain, constipation, feeling cold, dry skin or depression. The thyroid gland is really the master conductor of the body, so when it is underactive, everything becomes sluggish. It governs metabolism, in other words, how fast your bodily processes are occurring. So when it’s not up to speed, you may feel as if you’re running on flat batteries! Fortunately there are lots of things that can help. Exercise: Although you are feeling tired, exercise is critical to your wellbeing. Exercise regularly – daily for 45 minutes. It will improve your energy and

also stimulate thyroid hormone secretion. Try yoga or walking – the main thing is to just get moving! Stress management: Try to reduce stress levels as part of your daily routine as the hormone involved in the stress response – cortisol – can contribute to hypothyroid issues. Make sure you get eight hours restful sleep every night. Foods to increase: • Iodine rich foods: seafood, seaweeds such as nori in sushi. • Zinc rich foods: seafood especially oysters, lamb and beef. • Copper rich foods: sesame seeds (tahini), cashews, barley, sunfl ower seeds. • Selenium rich foods: Brazil nuts, sardines and most fish • Vitamin A rich foods: all orange and yellow coloured fruits and veg. David Stein Shane Richards takes over the column this week, with this submission: A lot of you will look at this article and laugh. But back in the day, seeing your poop sitting on a white porcelain bowl would have made many people laugh too! Why? Because a full squat position is the NATURAL way to go to the loo. Toddlers will naturally squat down to relieve themselves. Do you think our caveman ancestors (Grok) would have known what to do with such a device like the toilet? No! Of course not. Grok would’ve done what felt good and this was his natural instinct. Th is natural urge to fully squat down to go to the toilet is not only EASY but is a HEALTHY and FUNCTIONAL way to relieve yourself! Not only do you get a FULL movement and evacuation, you do so with minimal effort. You stretch out your spine and you also get a great stretch in all your lower body muscles that sometimes NEVER see that range of movement. Keeping joints moving

A gift that counts Give mum a gift that benefits families in developing world
“Australia has not seen a major epidemic of measles in Australia for almost 20 years, but around the world, 450 people die every day from this deadly yet entirely preventable disease,” said UNICEF ambassador, Geoffrey Rush. “A gift of fab jabs from UNICEF will protect 100 kids from measles for just $31 – spread the love this Mother’s Day!”
There are many other UNICEF gifts that you can give to your mum this Mother’s Day. Choose from water pumps, school books, mosquito nets, anti-malarial drugs, vaccination doses or emergency food. Oxfam Australia has a fun range of quirky cards for mum with great gifts for developing communities, while Animals Australia has gift donations to go towards their work.

ONE FOR THE PLANNER
TEEN HEARTTHROBS PLANNING TRIP TO SYDNEY
I
f you grew up in the ‘90s, or were just conscious in the ‘90s, you’d know that one of the biggest music moments of that decade was when American teenage band, Hanson, released a little song called ‘MmmBop’. Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson became household names in Australia in 1997 when they released their album, ‘Middle Of Nowhere’. A staggering one in 10 Australian households owned a copy. Unaff ected by charts or fads, they’ve spent more than a decade since then building a community of new fans, earning praise for their songwriting and dynamic live performances, with New York’s Village Voice calling them “the fi nest straight-up rock band in America”. After a seven year absence, Hanson are back with a brand new album and an Australian tour that is sure to capture the attention and imagination of a nation that has always embraced them. Still with their soul-inspired brand of American pop-rock‘n’roll, the boys will treat audiences to a show including all their hits during their Shout It Out tour. Don’t miss your chance to see Hanson live and relive those teenage dreams at the Enmore Theatre on September 16. Tickets are now on sale, staring at $65. Visit enmoretheatre.com.au for more information or to book.
Pop sensation, Hanson, is coming to Sydney in September.

THE RETURN OF THE DARKNESS
W
hen UK outfit The Darkness exploded on to the international scene in 2003 with their incendiary slice of nouveauglam rock, ‘Permission to Land’, it seemed nothing could touch the four blokes from Suffolk. Led by the almost impossible falsetto of frontman Justin Hawkins, The Darkness reintroduced the world to devil-may-care rock and roll, possibly not seen since the days of the ‘80s rock bands like Motley Crue and Skid Row. Cracks started to appear when bassist Frankie Poullain left the band in 2005 before the release of second album ‘One Way Ticket to Hell… and Back’. Hawkins departed a year later to pursue other projects, seemingly spelling the end of The Darkness. Well, not quite. Like a leather-panted phoenix rising from the ashes, the original Darkness line-up reunited in March last year and haven’t looked back since. Now, the band are about to head back to our shores and, bassist Frankie Poullain said the lads can’t wait to strut their stuff again Down Under. “It’s going be awesome to get back to Australia, we’ve all got some really great memories of playing down there,” Poullain said. Poullain said Aussie punters could expect another rock and roll extravaganza on this tour, albeit a little more raucous – if that’s possible. Catch The Darkness when they land at the Roundhouse at the University of NSW this Sunday, May 6 at 8pm. Tickets are $72. Visit www.ticketek.com.au.

TIGER RUMBLINGS Benji’s one point Troy Dodds wonder
T
hank God for Benji’s one pointer against the Eels last Sunday. Th e fact that the Tigers led by such a huge margin with 15 minutes to go and only won by a point is a worrying sign for a club that can’t seem to get it right for the full 80 minutes. Th ey did enough to win last Sunday but it was a hollow feeling for all Tigers fans, and worrying signs for the future. Former Balmain player Steve Roach boldy declared recently that Robbie Farah wasn’t ready for Origin. Farah would do well to listen to Roach and learn from it. He’ll most likely be the NSW number nine now that Danny Buderus is out of calculations, but he needs a big game on the weekend. Farah’s defence is a concern but a big game on the weekend may convince Ricky Stuart. The Wests Tigers have lost an appeal over a 2010 Salary Cap fi ne of $187,140. The Tigers had contested the fi ne through the NRL Appeals Tribunal Chaired by Sir Laurence Street. Sir Laurence handed down a fi nal judgment in the matter this week. Tigers coach Tim Sheens provided one of the lighter moments of the round last week when he swore at the post-match
press conference following the win over Parramatta, only to realise his gaff e and order a re-take. Tim, we shared your frustration and there was no problem with dropping the f-bomb in this case! There’s more talk this week about suburban grounds getting the chop and clubs playing matches out of two or three centralised stadiums. Let’s hope it never happens. If NRL matches are not played at Leichhardt Oval or Campbelltown, the heart and soul of rugby league is very much destroyed. It can’t happen and if it ever does, the rugby league community must mobilise to take action. Has anyone else succumbed to the pressure of buying some rugby league trading cards when buying petrol? I certainly have. It’s brought back some wonderful childhood memories and had me searching through my parent’s home in an effort to fi nd my old cards. No luck so far. One Tigers fan said to me during the week that he’d donate $500 to charity if the Tigers don’t win on the weekend. Th at’s con fidence for you. I’ll hold him to it and we’ll see next week if he’s dipping into this pocket.
