rayndler MP An thony Albanese surely hopes his belo ved Rabbi tohs c an w in tonight’s finals clash with Melbourne as easily as he retained his seat at the Federal Election last Saturday.

Fears earlier this y ear that the L abor MP w ould lose t he sea t to the Greens w ere easily washed away, w ith Mr Albanese grabbin g about 4 8 per cent of the vote.

The result means that there was actually a swing to Labor in the electorate despite the party losing government, w ith the Coali tion claimin g a dec isive election victory.

Mr Albanese spen t much of elec tion da y last Saturday v isiting schools in his elec torate, lending support to various events some of the schools held for the day, but also drumming up final votes before the 6pm closure of the polls.

As counting got underway Mr Albanese made a number of telev ision appearances lookin g confident as he continued to spruik the legacy that Labor leaves behind.

We're the mad ones if we oppose end of season celebrations I received a te xt message late on M onday night from a dedic ated rugby league fan, warnin g me that a stor y would break in the mainstream media the next morning that wasn’t a great look for the club, or the game.

I woke up Tuesday morning, saw the story and days later, I’m still scratching my head trying to work out what all the fuss is about.

I’m referring to The Daily Telegraph’s stor y on Tuesday that focused on Penrith’s ‘Mad Monday’ celebrations.

‘Mad Monday’ is the term given to the celebrations that happen the day after the long, arduous National Rugby League season wraps up for a particular club.

The Telegraph’s story, which then sparked furious discussion and debate on radio and in other media, focused on the fact that bikini-clad waitresses served players drinks during a three hour private cruise on Sydney Harbour.

Don’t just gloss o ver the w ord ‘private’ I used to describe the event. It is important to note that this event was not hel d at a public bar or hotel, nor was the media invited.

The D aily T elegraph chose to in trude on the event, taking photographs from either the wharf or another boat. When they couldn’t find a story, they c reated one. C an’t waste those pic tures of girls in lingerie serving drinks, can we?

Let’s be exceptionally clear here that there is no suggestion any Penrith player was or has been involved in an incident on this day.

I can't work out what all the fuss is about

In fac t, there is nothin g to indic ate tha t the players did not behave impeccably.

To suggest that players or the club ha ve done something wrong bec ause part of the da y’s entertainment on Monday was waitresses in bikinis is beyond ludicrous.

Writing in the Telegraph on W ednesday, Richard Hinds w ent on a tirade sugg esting that Mad Monday shoul d be replaced w ith F amily M onday. “Bring the wives and kids,” he wrote.

That ar gument is fundamen tally f lawed and shows a real lack of respec t to players who regularly visit ill children in hospital, attend community events or assist in projects in their club’s junior ranks. You would not a find a sport that better connects with the community.

Richard, by the way, also believes cheerleaders are “ sadly da ted” and i t is a “ demeaning practice” at NRL games.

I tend to think the young women, most of them aspiring dancers looking for professional experience in a cut-throat industry, enjoy taking part in the sport at its highest level.

I’m pret ty sure Richar d wan ts t o dump hot dogs and mea t pies too , replaced w ith high tea and sandwiches, served of course by the women who are no longer allowed to dance.

Bad, illegal behaviour should not be accepted, just as i t wouldn’t be accepted a t a w ork Christmas party or on a nigh t out in the c ity. But to invent a story, and to drag players through the mud for no reason, is just wrong and unfair.

Councils argue over vital meals

arrickville Ma yor V ic Mac ri has fired a broadside to his counterpart Leichhardt Mayor Darc y Byrne o ver an out standing debt f rom risin g costs of meals supplied to el derly L eichhardt residen ts as part of the g overnment’s M eals on Wheels program.

In March of 2012 Marrickv ille Counc il sent a letter to Leichhardt Council seeking financial support to co ver the ad ditional costs it incurred from supplying the meals to local residents.

Marrickville Council claims there are on average 95 L eichhardt residents receiving Meals on Wheels daily and the costs ha ve risen by $1.71 per meal or around $41, 000 per annum to supply the meals for L eichhardt residents.

They claim they have not received a for-

mal response f rom Leichhardt Council in relation to the matter.

Earlier this year, both Mayors met to address the issue with no decisive outcome.

A document that forms part of the business paper f rom L eichhardt Counc il shows tha t a fundin g model needs to be put in place to deliver a solution.

Leichhardt Mayor Darcy Byrne said discussions needed to be hel d w ith both State and Federal Governments to resolve the funding issue.

“Marrickville Counc il ha ve signed an agreement with the Commonwealth Government and are recei ving pa yments to provide the M eals on Wheels ser vice to residents ac ross the inner w est. L eichhardt Council is not part of this agreement so Marrickville Council would need to renegotiate this federal contract if they now find they cannot deliver the service for the price they agreed,” he said.

Councillor Mac ri said the issue no w is that the outstanding debt needs to be paid sooner rather than later.

“W e’re fine w ith reneg otiating w ith the government, but Leichhardt Council needs to pa y the outstandin g bill of $41,000,” he said.

He said i t would be a “ shame” if L eichhardt Council did not pay what they owed.

Police snapshot Police hunt duo over store damage and robbery

Police are investigating an incident that has seen a local school broken into.

Between 5pm on Thursday, September 5 and 7.50am on Monday, September 9, unknown person/s have broken into one of the classrooms of a Dulwich Hill Primary School.

The perpetrators entered through a window and have ransacked the entire room, causing extensive damage to property.

A school alarm went off late on the Sunday afternoon and security attended, which provides a clue in relation to the timeframe.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Marrickville Local Area Command on 9568 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sometime between 11.30pm on Thursday, September 5 and 6am Friday, September 6 two people have smashed the front window to a store near the intersection of New Canterbury Road and West Street, Petersham. Once inside they’ve gained entry to the cigarette cabinet and stolen a large number of cigarette packets. One of the persons is described as male, of medium build, approximately 175cm, wearing a white hooded jumper and dark coloured pants.

The other person involved is described as female, medium build, approximately 175cm, wearing a dark hooded jumper, dark pants, and carrying a white handbag.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact police.

Motorcyclist stopped riding on footpath

Meat cleaver used in violent Newtown robbery

About 11.45pm on Thursday, September 5 a motorcyclist was stopped by police after he was seen riding on the footpath on Enmore Road, Marrickville.

Marrickville Police stopped the rider a short time later and spoke to him about his manner of riding.

The Provisional licensed rider was subjected to a breath test, which produced a positive reading.

As a result the rider was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station for a breath analysis which was also a positive result. The rider is now due to face Newtown Local Court in relation to the matter on a later date.

Police are investigating the attempted robbery of a man who was threatened with a meat cleaver in Newtown. About 5.30am on Sunday, September 8, a 40-year-old man was walking along King Street, near Dickson Street, when he was approached by a man who demanded his wallet. Police have been told the man held up a meat cleaver and continued his demands for cash.

The 40-year-old threw his wallet on the ground then fell over, with the armed man fleeing on foot without any proceeds. The man was not injured during the incident and contacted police later in the afternoon. Investigations continue.

lames en gulfed a warehouse in Chippendale in the early hours of last Saturday morning, causing extensive damag e to a commercial building.

Emergency ser vices w ere c alled to O’Connor Street a t Chippendale a t about 2.25am after reports of a fire burning through a warehouse complex.

It is believed a number of businesses operated from the comple x, however police were notified that no-one currently lived in the building.

A Fire and R escue NS W spok esperson said 11 c rews f rom surroundin g suburbs attended the scene includin g a cherr ypicker and extinguished the fire in an hour and a half.

s the weather gets warmer Marrickville residen ts are bein g warned of the dan ger wind and rain c an c ause to properties as the storm season draws closer.

NSW State Emergency Service (SES) and NRMA Insurance ha ve collaborated to offer advice to limit the damage that can be done to properties by suggesting a number of precautions locals can take.

SES Marrickv ille Unit spokesperson Michael Carney said people could do a range of simple things to minimise risk.

“Trimming o verhanging branches and clearing gut ters and drains. Tying or securing ligh tweight objec ts such as trampolines and garden furniture, and tucking away y our c ar underco ver c an g o a lon g way in preventing storm damage,” Mr Carney said this week.

The SES fiel d v olunteers are perfec t to lend advice because of their experience in responding to storm damage.

“We want to focus on things that can be done to give residents some peace of mind over the storm season," Mr Carney said.

They include: • Trim overhanging tree branches; • Clean out gutters and down pipes every six months; • Make sure your insurance is up-to-date; • Check tha t y our ro of is in g ood repair every year; • Listen to weather warnings; Mariana Cidade, a spok esperson for NRMA Insurance, said research they had done backed up the SES' findings.

“Storm claims made up about half of our home insurance claims in the last financial y ear. We see a lot of damag ed roofs and gut ters, which often lead to wa ter damage as rain f lows into homes. S evere winds can blow loose roof tiles and smash nearby tree branches in to homes. B oth examples of damag e c an be prev ented through basic maintenance,” she said.

Dulwich Hill residents will soon have a new library to visit and utilise.

Marrickville Council has entered into a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) that will result in the new library.

Council this week voted to approve a development at 362-372 New Canterbury Road in Dulwich Hill that includes the VPA, estimated to be worth $2.5 million in public benefit.

Acting Mayor Councillor Emanuel Tsardoulias said the VPA is a highly satisfactory arrangement for the Dulwich Hill community.

“This is fantastic news for the residents of Dulwich Hill,” he said.

“The developer is offering a brand new library that is larger than the cur-

Treasurer Mik e Bair d this w eek said NSW continues to lead the coun try on the measure of jobs growth, and labour participation remains a t a historic ally high level.

The l atest A BS L abour F orce f igures released on Thursda y sho w NS W c reated 700 more jobs this mon th, despite a m oderate i ncrease in t he N SW unemployment ra te f rom 5.7 per cen t (revised) to 5.9 per cent.

“While i t’s disappoin ting to see an y increase in the unemplo yment ra te, the good news is NSW continues to create more jobs, i t continues to lead the country on the measure of jobs growth, and our labour participation rate is at a historically high level,” said Mr Baird.

“NSW was one of only two states that added jobs this mon th – w ith a lar ge proportion of those jobs g oing to fulltime positions – and saw an increase in participation this month.”

Mr Baird said he was pleased with the continuing trend.

ecently nomina ted as a finalist for the celebra ted Australian Human R esources Manag er of the Year Award 2013, Human Resources Manager at Canterbury Hurlstone Park R SL Club , Paula L a R occa, was selected from hundreds of nominations and businesses throughout Australia.

With many achievements at the Club, Ms LaRocca was recognised for her e xcellent management style and implementation of a range of initiatives including a new employee recogni tion and rewar d p rogram and an in vigorating ‘H ealth & W ellness Expo’ for them.

Her active management of workers compensation has seen a signific ant improvement in the Club’s workers compensation premiums, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in the last financial year.

Paula said her nomina tion was an honour and being a finalist was a thrill. ”Being nomina ted for this a ward was such a surprise and then being selected as a finalist is truly an honour,” she said.

ome brewing is serious business. J ust ask T empe residen t Patrick M cInerney who r uns the Tempe Brew Club.

Patrick started making his own brew in September 2011 bec ause i t was a cheap way of consuming beer. Nowadays though he does it to perfect the craft.

“I started out brew ing m y o wn beer to save money, but o ver time i t’s developed into making a perfect beer rather than saving money,” he said.

Home brewing is a thri ving pastime because the savings are phenomenal.

“We’re looking at spending $30 to $40 to produce five cases of beer,” he said.

The number of people g etting involved is gro wing too . The T empe club has 5 7 members, 20 of those ac tual brew ers.

They meet at least four times a year.

Patrick said he enjo yed it so much he is going to e xpand and open a commerc ial brewery in the near future.

“I’ll name the commercial business ‘Willie the B oatman’, after the con vict who ferried p eople a cross t he C ooks R iver t o Tempe H ouse in the 1800 ’s,” he tol d the Weekender this week.

“I want to have a public sho wing of my various brews b y the end of the y ear perhaps in Marrickville.”

Two of his specialities will be Black Bunny Dark Ale and Marrickville Bitters.

The H ome Brew ers Competi tion was held in Castle Hill last month with exhibitors inc reasing f rom 32 4 last y ear to 556 this year.

Patrick said the Castle Hill exhibition was a prestigious event for the seriou s brewer and ne xt mon th another home brew ing exhibition will be held at the Rocks.

“Me and a friend will try and get involved at this year’s event. We will name our Pale Ale after a loc al from Tempe who loaned me his trailer to g o down to Melbourne to pick up the in gredients and brin g them back,” he said.

Unique tribute to tireless local hero Addison Road Community Centre pays tribute to its celebrated leader BASIL NAIMET @ICWJournalist

he h as be en a n u nsung h ero t o many of the ethnic communi ties who have made their way to the Addison Road Community Centre (ARCC) in Marrickville – until now.

On August 12, the President of the ARCC, Vivi K outsounadis was honoured with the naming of a Drive after her, within the centre by the staff and management.

In 1976 she helped a strin g of groups come together to bond a communi ty rich in tapestr y including cultural groups and associations who needed a place to for ge their iden tities and helped each group flourish in their own way.

“I really got to bring the many groups together so that we could have a func tional and collabora tive en vironment here in Marrickville. We had ethnic groups, pla y groups, in terest groups such as thea tre

and en tertainment comin g tog ether and over the years the centre has evolved into what it is today in a harmonious way,” Ms Koutsounadis said.

The g esture was a tribute to the more than 35 y ears she has con tributed to the centre, which toda y includes 22 not - forprofits and 13 artists and writers.

The centre has become one of the major talking points of Marrickv ille’s arts scene and is highly respected in the industry.

But she coul dn’t have done i t by herself and praises her team and management.

“I w ant t o p ay t ribute t o t he s taff h ere at Addison Road and other or ganisations who work with me,” she said.

“I’m really humbled and honoured b y naming the Dri ve in A ddison Road in m y name, it was a surprise.”

General Manag er Rosanna Barbero said Ms Koutsounadis is a visionary.

“Vivi did not just dare to ac t, she dreamed, she planned and believ ed in change,” she said.

State Member for Marrickville, Carmel Tebbutt also passed on her best.

“Vivi h as w orked t irelessly t o e nsure services understand and respond to the needs of multic ultural communi ties and is a passionate advocate for social justice,” Ms Tebbutt said.

Marrickville High S chool hosted the Science, T echnology, En gineering and Maths (STEM) activities day last Wednesday, that also featured a sit-in version of a Formula One car designed and created

by UTS Engineering and IT students.

Over 150 loc al school chil dren f rom Marrickville High, Marrickv ille W est

Public School, Newington College, South Sydney High S chool and W ilkins P ublic School took part.

The idea is cen tred around studen ts working together to design, collabora te, build, mark et and race a F ormula One model race car down a 25 metre track.

They put into practice team work, industrial design, and engineering skills.

The aim of the promising STEM project is to gi ve primary school chil dren a bet ter understanding of ho w science, technology, engineering and maths work.

It is hoped tha t the chil dren will want to mo ve in the direc tion of c reativity when they ev entually mo ve on to high school down the track.

Beach weather is already here, so it's time to get your bikini out of storage and head for the water!

Every person has a fashion weakness.

For some it might be shoes or handbags, for others i t might be jew ellery or sun glasses but for me, i t is sw imwear. I just can’t walk by the swimwear isle without stopping and having a browse before I try and buy.

My weakness for the la test bikini, one piece and beach wear styles can only mean one thing... I will forever be in love with the warmer months.

We are only weeks into spring and already the temperature is hitting the 30 ’s, which not only means tha t the beach and the pool are c alling, it means tha t stores are full of the la test swimwear trends.

Like any other type of clothing, swimwear trends vary from year to year. Last year we saw the re- emergence of 40’s style swimwear; high-waisted bikini bot toms and under- wire tops in vintage florals. Men on the other hand shied away from the traditional knee-length Hawaiian board short and w ere seen wearing shorter, print-less shorts to the beach.

We are seein g some trends lik e these f rom the prev ious spring/summer season rollin g o ver to this season but w ith them come a whole range of exciting new trends too.

Swimwear colours and patterns this season are significantly different to the last spring/summer season that we saw. Rather than pastel florals we are seeing retro floral prints in bright, crisp greens, pinks and purples. R etro g eometric prin ts are also very popular this season alon g with screen-printed onepieces.

We are still seeing the high-waisted bikini bottoms however this season’s styles pay attention to the extra details. Keep an eye out for bikinis with tassles, ruffles and tops with complex detailing in the design.

I love the retro look so, I can’t wait to get my hands on a wetsuit-style one-piece.

Like the trends in w omen’s sw imwear, men w ill be also wearing brigh t and colourful short boar d- shorts with retro prints to the beach this season.

“Scientists have always said eating organic food is senseless and makes no difference as pestic ides don’t harm humans,” says Dr Mark Donohoe, a Sydney GP. “However, the pesticides kill certain species of gut bacteria, not us.”

This c auses an imbalance tha t con tributes to obesi ty and poor general health, says Dr Donohoe.

“This thinking is becoming mainstream, particularly among gastroenterologists. My wife and patients have told me for 20 years that they feel bet ter on an or ganic diet, but I ha ve said there is no reason why they should.”

It turns out they are protecting their gut flora, he says.

“For the past 10 years doctors have been looking at gut bacteria as something that makes us healthy. If our gut bacteria is not healthy, we cannot be healthy,” says Dr Donohoe.

He sa ys en tire families c an become obese if somethin g in their environment disrupts their gut. A baby gets its first inoculation of the good bacteria from mum in the birth c anal and breastfeeding also appears to be an important way to encourage a diversity of gut bacteria.

Now I have your attention, it’s not for anything I did, it’s because I was c razy and foolish enough to sugg est they shoul d build some muscle.

Why is i t some w omen think if they put a hea vy squat bar on their back they are g oing to have legs like Arnold the next morning? Working with female athletes over the years I have seen how hard it is for them to buil d any substantial muscle mass as it is.

Some women think weights will turn them into one of those “freaky” women bodybuilders with the huge jaws and Adam’s apples, but unless you’re injecting growth hormone and more testosterone than found in y our a verage men’s r ugby team, it’s not going to happen.

Most w omen tend to buil d fairly small, lean, defined and shapely muscle.

And often once they build a little they start liking the look it gives their body.

Also trained muscle is stronger for everyday activity, and less likely to be injured than weak muscle.

It learns to store more ener gy in the muscle to g et through work. It fires quick er than un trained muscle which helps in making you more coordinated in general movement.

There are many, many benefits including the more lean muscle you have the faster your metabolic rate and the higher your metabolism. This is good news!

Yes, you burn fat! Men naturally have more lean muscle mass than w omen, but w ith regular fi tness trainin g an yone c an achieve a high metabolic rate.

The Bachelor fails to make a mark One of the big shows of the year premiered last Sunday on Ten, however not too many people fell in love with it, so to speak.

‘The Bachelor Australia’ only attracted 669,000 viewers on its opening night, 331,000 shy of that magic one million mark. I must admit I did manage to catch the first episode and it wasn’t bad, I’m actually quite surprised it didn’t do well.

My favourite show ‘Home and Away’ is set to begin filming episodes in London next month. The storyline follows a number of central characters faced with a challenge and asks the question ‘do they let go of what is most important in their lives or do they put up a desperate fight to hold on to people they love?’ The UK episodes will air early next year on Seven.

Aussie comedian or should I say chameleon, Chris Lilley, has revealed the title of his new ABC show to air later this year. The new show is called ‘Ja’mie: Private School Girl’ and will feature the return of one of Lilley’s most famous characters, Ja’mie King.

In October ‘Big Brother’ will move Evictions to Wednesday nights, with the first Eviction to take place on October 2.

It’s understood the Evictions are being shifted due to ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ moving into the semi-final stage of the competition.

There was plenty of chatter this week that soon-to-be dad Rove McManus could be reviving the classic game show ‘Blankety Blanks’ on Ten. The show, which originally starred Graham Kennedy, first hit Australian screens in 1977. It was last revived in 1996 with Shane Bourne.

Once the darling of the pre-news game shows, ‘Deal or No Deal’? could be done and dusted.

Channel Seven has announced that their new game show ‘Million Dollar Minute’ will air weeknights at 5.30pm beginning from this Monday. ‘Deal’ will now shift to 5pm. The death slot?

orld class wheelchair r ugby is comin g to S ydney w ith the USA, New Zealand and Australia ba ttling i t out for the Inaugural Tri-Nations Cup. In a world first, the har d hitting sport of wheelchair rugby will be played outdoors at S t M ary’s C athedral S quare o pposite Hyde Park with three games a day including a twilight match.

This will be the first time the Australians have played at home since winning a gold medal at the L ondon Paralympics in 2012 and c aptain R yley B att said the tournament was something the Aussies are fired up for and excited about.

“We’ve got a lot of fire in the belly now and we’re going to come out and hopefully w in every game against the U S and New Zealand,” he said.
