The passing of Arthur Donnelly has rocked Dulwich Hill Cycle Club BASIL NAIMET @ICWJournalist
D
escribed as a tr ue gentleman who supported the cycling fraternity in Dulwich Hill, club stalwart Arthur D onnelly has passed a way, much to the shock and sadness of his friends and family. Vice President of the Dulw ich Hill Bic ycle Club, Geoff Martin said Mr Donnelly, who worked tirelessly as a volunteer and official with the club, did so until the day before his passing. “It was a real shock when w e heard of his passing. He worked on the Monday (November 4) and went home as usual. W e were told that on Tuesday morning he passed away,” Mr Martin said. Mr Donnelly’s involvement in cycling started at a young age. At 16 he won the five mile and one mile championships for Lidcombe. After rac ing for f our c lubs, M r D onnelly d ecided t o r ide f or Dulwich Hill in the 1960’s and never looked back. His dedic ation to the sport has been w ithout comparison. He acted as marshall for the Cy cling Union in the G oulburn road races for man y years and was the club delega te to counc il meetin gs, and supported the club a t the C amperdown and

He was hel d in high esteem b y Cycling NSW as the delega te represen ting DHBC a t their annual general meeting. He became an official of Cycling NSW in the c apacity of Commissaire a ttending and officiating at track and road events. He saw the club through its more difficult times when rider numbers were at their lowest, and saw
the rise of membership in more recen t times skyrocket to over 400. In 2003 Mr Donnelly was recognised for his con tribution to the sport and was presented with Life Membership to Cycling NSW. Mr Martin said he alwa ys offered w ords of encouragement to junior and senior riders alike. “He was well known and well respected across the state,” Mr Martin said. Arthur Donnelly was 85-years-old.
