ederal Treasurer Joe Hockey delivered his first Budget on Tuesday evening and the backlash has been harsh.

Making the tough sell, Mr Hockey said the Budget will redirect taxpayers’ dollars from unaffordable consumption today to productive investment for tomorrow, ending “the age of entitlement”.

“It will do this while supporting the most vulnerable, and taking significant steps towards ensuring that the Government can live within its means,” he said.

“The contributions made by all in the Budget will mean the Government can deliver a critical Infrastructure Growth Package, the world’s biggest medical research endowment fund and a competitive, deregulated higher education sector.”

But Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese would go so far as to say that they have taken a chainsaw to social welfare, education and health.

“They don’t like the public broadcasters, so they’re attacking the ABC and SBS. They don’t like public education, so they’re abandoning the Gonski reforms,” he said.

“They don’t like public health, so they’re trying to end Medicare. They don’t like public transport, so they’re cutting funding around the country.

“There’s a bit of a theme here – the Abbott Government just doesn’t like public.”

Hockey’s budget shows that states need to have their own revenue Joe Hockey’s first budget as Treasurer has highlighted the great flaw in Federal-State funding arrangements in Australia. Put simply, the states provide most of the services we consider important – schools, hospitals, police, public transport – but have a limited capacity to raise money themselves and are reliant substantially on handouts from the Federal Government.

Currently, the Federal Government collects around 84 per cent of combined Federal and State revenue (including the GST) but is responsible for only 58 per cent of total government expenditure.

Conversely, State expenditure at 42 per cent of total government expenditure is more than two and a half times the revenue they are capable of raising by themselves.

In NSW, more than 40 per cent of State revenue comes from the Federal Government. The majority of that figure comes from the Goods and Services Tax, which is responsible for a quarter of NSW Government revenue.

The remainder comes from various agreements (principally health and education funding) and partnerships (mostly project specific funding for things like roads) between the state and federal governments.

Just under 40 per cent of state revenue comes from states taxes; mostly payroll tax, transfer duty on the sale of property, land tax, motor vehicle tax and gambling taxes (principally from poker machines).

The reason for this odd selection of taxes is because the Australian Constitution gives the Federal Government control over most areas of potential taxation, leaving the states to pick at the scraps.

Mr Hockey knows the States’ hands are tied but he also knows that the level of the GST can be increased if all the states agree.

So a large whack of his cuts came from money that would have gone to the states and which the states, for the most part, need to spend if they’re to continue providing essential services like schools and hospitals.

He knows if he hits them hard enough, they will look to the GST as the only option for making up the shortfall. Then he will claim it is the states that are pushing the GST up not the Federal Government.

Premier Mike Baird has said that over the longer term, “we need a mature discussion on tax reform in this country, in which no subject is off

the table”. This has generally been taken to mean increasing the GST. However, the NSW Government has flagged previously at the Standing Council on Federal Financial Relations a number of other proposals including income tax sharing with the Commonwealth, and the states retaining income tax equivalent payments when assets are privatised.

Presumably this means a guaranteed portion of income tax revenue would be handed over to the states just as GST revenue is guaranteed to the states. But it still doesn’t give any discretion to the states in revenue raising.

If the Federal Government decides they want to give people a tax cut, would the states just have to cop the revenue cut? Or would the states negotiate their chunk of income tax revenue separately to the Federal Government?

What if one state wants to offer a tax cut while another has a big infrastructure project they’re trying to raise money for?

To my mind, the states need to be given access to more discretionary areas of taxation revenue.

In the United States, the majority of states levy a state income tax, which is set at different rates in each state, plus you pay a federal income tax as well.

We could go down that path but I suspect there would be a lot of resistance both from the Australian Tax Office and companies operating in more than one state.

But by the same token we can’t continue to have a situation where the states are held over a barrel by the Federal Government. Because at the end of the day the losers will be our hospitals and our schools.

The Federal Budget has not increased wine taxes – a move welcomed by the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia.

Chief Executive Paul Evans said there would be a collective sigh of relief across regional Australia.

“The Australian wine industry supports over 30,000 jobs and earns over $1.8 billion in export revenue but high exchange rates, a consolidated retail sector and a high cost base have all placed significant hurdles in front of local producers,” he said.

“A recent industry review revealed very low average levels of profitability across the wine sector and many cases of local businesses operating below cost despite the fact we produce a truly glob-

Of the major features of the Budget, Mr Hockey has provided $2.9 billion for roads to support the construction of Badgerys Creek airport.

And the Federal Government is also providing a $1.5 billion contribution along with a further offer of a $2 billion loan to support the controversial WestConnex.

Mr Hockey also promised a $20 billion Medical Research Future Fund, which he hoped would help find better treatments or even cures for dementia, Alzheimer’s, heart disease or cancer.

“This fund will, within six years, be the biggest medical research endowment fund in the world,” Mr Hockey said.

“Its funding of research will be in addition to existing levels of funding through the National Health and Medical Research Council.”

But to pay for the fund, Medicare Benefits Schedule rebates will be reduced by $5 for standard doctor consultations and on top of that GPs will be able to collect a $7 contribution from July 1, 2015.

“Health services have never been free to taxpayers so patients are being asked to make a modest contribution towards their cost,” Mr Hockey said.

Mr Albanese described it as a cruel

budget which will hurt struggling families, pensioners and youth in the Inner West.

He said changes to Family Tax Benefit Part B to reduce the maximum income threshold from $150,000 to $100,000 coupled with the new GP tax and indexation of the fuel tax would cost a typical single income family almost $5,000 a year.

“The Inner West is also home to many young people and students, all of whom are significantly worse off under Abbott’s horror budget,” Mr Albanese said.

“The Coalition’s budget of broken promises also extends to the pension, despite Mr Abbott saying there would be no changes to the pension.”

Mr Albanese said this is a Government that doesn’t understand what it takes for families, pensioners and young people to make ends meet.

“The burden of this budget falls overwhelmingly on families, pensioners and young people,” agreed Lin Hatfield Dodds from UnitingCare Australia.

“We are concerned about multiple measures that reduce payments to pensioners, including the age pension, carers’ payments, disability support, and other income support payments. These measures reduce payments by $4 billion over five years.”

WestConnex divides Council A memorandum of understanding has been signed, but not everyone is happy

arrickville Council voted to sign a Memorandum of Understanding relating to the WestConnex last week but there were very different views on the consequences of the decision.

The MOU is being signed between the NSW Government and 10 Councils along the Parramatta Road corridor from the city to Parramatta.

Five community members, all opposed to the WestConnex development spoke at the Council’s meeting on Tuesday, May 6, and urged Council not to sign the document fearing that such a move would constitute support of the new road proposal and hasten its delivery.

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said that the opposite was true and that signing the document would guarantee Council a seat at the table, including access to important information without hindering its right to oppose the development in any way.

“Some community members have voiced their grave concerns about the WestConnex project. I share many of these concerns. Council agreeing to sign the MOU in no way means these concerns will go unheard,” Mayor Haylen said.

Map of the WestConnex, which is planned to connect the M4 at Strathfield with the M5 Most councillors agreed with the Mayor, including Liberal Cr Mark Gardiner who made it clear he was also strongly opposed to the WestConnex. His stance potentially

puts him at odds with his State and Federal Liberal colleagues who have been strong advocates for the delivery of the road link.

Opposing the vote to sign the MOU were

the four Greens councillors who called for more community consultation as neighbouring Ashfield and Leichhardt Councils had done.

“Mayor Haylen is rushing to have a seat at the WestConnex table, but in her rush is neither consulting with the community nor ensuring Council protects our parks, neighbourhoods and housing values,” Cr Max Phillips said.

“There is a major push by big developers to profit from the WestConnex by remodelling large chunks of the Inner West for high density flat buildings.”

Mayor Haylen rejected these assertions stating the MOU contains Marrickville’s priorities for the revitalisation project such as the preservation of historical residential and recreation areas including Camperdown Oval and Petersham Park.

“These must be taken into consideration as plans are developed,” she said.

“Council has made its opposition to WestConnex very clear. Council’s decision to sign the MOU on the Parramatta Road revitalisation project is in no way an endorsement of the WestConnex motorway project.”

The debate was the first real conflict between Cr Haylen and Cr Phillips, who are both contesting the seat of Summer Hill in the upcoming state election.

ocal Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt has raised concerns that new Premier Mike Baird has a radical agenda for the state, including the privatisation of hospitals and electricity and an increase in the GST, all of which she says will put more pressure on local families and household bills.

“Mike Baird’s plan for NSW is one in which you will pay more tax through an expansion of the GST, pay more for your electricity after privatisation, and face longer waiting times and more expensive health care when our public hospitals are privatised,” Ms Tebbutt said.

“Within moments of becoming Premier, Mike Baird declared our hospitals should be places that are run for profit, which echoes the Prime Minister’s call for upfront charges to be placed on GP and Emergency Department visits.

“Our public hospital emergency departments are already under pressure. Handing our public hospitals over to profitmotivated enterprises is not what the people of Marrickville voted for at the last election. We know from past experiences that privatising hospitals is a disaster.”

Ms Tebbutt said Mr Baird’s new agenda for NSW is about putting the profits of private companies ahead of the people.

“Selling the state’s electricity assets to the private sector will send electricity prices up. The private sector does not spend billions of dollars to buy a monopoly to cut the price of electricity and Mike Baird’s claims to the contrary fly in the face of reality,” she said.

She was also concerned about comments the Premier had made about wanting to extend the GST to food and education, which she said will just add to people’s grocery bills.

The Premier rejected Ms Tebbutt’s claims saying the private sector currently delivers a range of services in public hospitals, many of which were started under the previous Labor government.

“My Government will continue to look for ways to transform and improve health care – to deliver the best care in the best way possible,” Premier Baird said “There has been no change to the NSW Government’s position on electricity privatisation and my position remains that a sale would only be undertaken if there is a mandate to do so.”

On the GST, he called for, “a mature discussion on tax reform in this country, in which no subject is off the table”.

Centre could close its doors without funding

A

much loved community organisations is set to close its doors unless it can raise $54,000 in the next few weeks.

Community and Cultural Connections, formerly the May Murray Neighbourhood Centre, failed to secure Federal Government funding earlier this year that would have guaranteed its future.

While they still have some funding to provide services to the aged Arabic and Vietnamese communities, Executive Officer Natanya Mandel said that without additional funding, they will be forced to wind the organisation up at the end of the financial year.

“We need money,” Ms Mandel said.

“We’re asking anyone who’s ever been helped by May Murray, who’s seen the good we can do, to consider helping us so we can continue our work.”

Ms Mandel said the organisation had been helping the local community for nearly 40 years and recently they had put a lot of work into rebuilding the organisation to give it a foundation for a sustainable funding model.

“Unfortunately, we’ve found ourselves in a climate where it is difficult to get financial backing. The funding we applied

for went to big organisations rather than the small ones like us.”

She felt it would be a huge loss to the local community if the organisation folded.

“It will put a big burden of care back on the community,” she said.

Hanne Makhoul has been part of the Arabic group for 16 years and said if the organisation closed, it would have a devastating effect on the community.

“There are about 50 members of the Arabic speaking group. Most don’t speak English well,” Ms Makhoul said.

“They use it for all sorts of things, filling out tax forms, making appointments with doctors. If it closes down, they won’t know what to do.”

Federal Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese blamed the Abbott Government, saying he was concerned this week’s budget would have a disastrous impact on those who can least afford it.

“I have seen the fantastic services Community and Cultural Connections provides for the most vulnerable people in the community,” Mr Albanese said.

“These organisations should receive support from the Federal Government in recognition of the work they do.”

A spokesperson for the Assistant Minister for Social Services, Senator Mitch Fifield, said funding is assessed through a competitive tender process.

Man caught in possession of stolen mail and documents

Man extradited from QLD over armed robbery in Lewisham

A man has been arrested after allegedly being found with stolen items taken from mailboxes in Sydney’s inner west this week.

About 2.45pm on Monday, May 12, officers attached to the Police Transport Command were patrolling around Carramar when they stopped a red Nissan Pulsar sedan. After speaking to the driver, officers searched a 29-year-old male passenger and allegedly found cards, documents and a mobile phone, all believed to be stolen.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to Cabramatta Police Station. Further investigations led police to believe the man allegedly stole documents from letterboxes in the Dulwich Hill, Homebush and West Pennant Hills areas. The man was charged and will appear in court on June 24.

A man has been arrested in Queensland and extradited to NSW to face court in relation to the armed robbery of a hotel in Lewisham last year. Queensland police attached to the Robbery and Serious Crime Unit arrested a 29-year-old man in Cairns early last Saturday morning.

Police allege the man was involved in an armed robbery at a hotel in Lewisham on Monday, December 16 last year where three males, two of whom were armed with shortened firearms, and one who was armed with a large knife - threatened staff members with their weapons, before accessing an office where they were able to steal an amount of cash.

The man, from Bexley, was extradited to NSW on Monday, May 12 and charged.

Man spotted setting fire to two cars in Petersham

A 29-year-old man from Marrickville was conveyed to Concord Mental Hospital for assessment following an incident last Friday, May 9. At 6.15am, police attended an address in Marrickville in relation to a man threatening self harm and destroying property. As police attempted to approach the man on the top floor of the building, the man threw plates and other objects at them.

Additional police were called to the scene and the man exited his unit holding two large knives, inciting police to come upstairs to fight him. He threw one knife and then went back into the unit and threw a full sized screen door towards police . The man later left the unit and was arrested by police.

About 4.20am on Monday, May 12, two vehicles in John Street, Petersham were set alight. One of the owners of the vehicle awoke to a loud crackling noise outside her bedroom window. The woman looked outside and saw her vehicle and her neighbour’s vehicle on fire.

The fire brigade and police attended when both vehicles were well alight. The fire brigade extinguished both fires shortly after.

One vehicle was completely destroyed and the other vehicle was severely damaged.

A man had been seen to walk up John Street carrying what appeared to be jerry can. Police are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Report shows shortage in rental market

ousing affordability is so dire in Sydney that a new report has found virtually nothing in the Inner West on the market is affordable for low income renters.

Anglicare analysed more than 12,000 properties that were advertised for rent in the greater Sydney area on the weekend beginning Saturday, April 5.

They found just 33 were affordable and appropriate for households on income support payments without placing them into rental stress – the definition of affordable being a situation where the rent is less than 30 per cent of household income.

In the City and Inner South area, which includes Marrickville and neighbouring suburbs, almost 1,500 properties were surveyed. None were affordable and appropriate for people on income support payments.

For households on the minimum wage, there were seven properties available. All but one of these was for single people with no children.

If you were prepared to pay up to 45 per cent of your income on rent, there were 24 properties available for people on income support and 96 for people on the minimum wage.

Anglicare Sydney’s Director of Advocacy and Research Sue King said low income families across Sydney were struggling with rent.

“In order to keep a roof over their head many people will go into severe rental stress spending more than 30 per cent of a very limited income on rent. This leaves very little for food and payment of utilities such as electricity,” Ms King said.

“Our research indicates that people will go without food in order to pay their rent and this is particularly problematic in households with children.

“We are very concerned with the onset of winter and what this may mean for people on the aged pension, disability support, and Newstart who are privately renting."

Marrickville Councillor Melissa Brooks said the affordable rental crisis in Sydney is one that significantly affects young people – particularly students and low income workers – and therefore needs to be addressed.

“Australia is one of the few developed countries in the world that allows landlords to raise rents more than every 12 months, to evict people without reason, and which has no cap on rental increases – landlords can increase rent as much as the ‘market’ will bear. This is part of why rents have been able to double in five years in our area,” Cr Brooks said.

arrickville Council’s Perfect Match Mural Program has found true love with its first arrow.

The program is designed to connect local artists with local property owners who are interested in having a public artwork installed on a wall that is subject to frequent graffiti attacks.

The Andrianakos family from Rallis Timber near Sydenham Station were matched up with Marrickville artist Fintan Magee, who has designed a masterpiece on the side of their business.

The artwork, which can be seen on Marrickville Road, is a surrealist composition depicting a man riding a horse with a ‘Queenslander’ style house attached to the rump of the horse.

“A lot of my work is surrealist at the moment,” Mr Magee said.

“This one deals with being in Brisbane during the floods. The character is a bit like the ‘Man from Snowy River’ but he’s more the ‘Man from Brisbane River’.”

He said he also wanted to include a nod to the work of Rallis Timber through the trees and the timber houses.

“I liked the fact they do sustainable

timber,” he said of the local business.

Kathy Andrianakos said they had a lot of trouble with graffiti on the wall so when they heard about the Perfect Match program they got in contact with Council, who showed them examples of different artists’ styles.

“Fintan’s work looked quite interesting with its 3D effect so we went with him,” Ms Andrianakos said.

She was impressed that he came out to the timber yard, found out what they did and sent them draft outlines of the proposed artwork.

“He’s done a great job and he’s been really good to work with,” she said.

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said the mural will become an inspirational new gateway to Marrickville.

“Council’s Perfect Match Mural Program will see many more iconic artworks like this one replace frequent tagging and graffiti on public spaces all over Marrickville,” Mayor Haylen said.

“Marrickville is a cultural centre and Council wants to help artists like Fintan continue to bring it to life.”

The majority of Perfect Match artworks will be installed around June 12-15, however, this work had to be fast tracked after Mr Magee secured a major international commission at the last minute.

t Peters sculptor Geoff Harvey has an exhibition opening this weekend of Australian animals crafted out of old bits of furniture and other found objects.

Mr Harvey says he tried to choose objects that don’t just look like the animal he’s creating but evokes their characteristics as well.

His flock of birds in flight appear to defy gravity, soaring high on thermal updrafts around the gallery spaces. The owl threatens to swoop while the honeyeater buzzes around. On the ground, a kangaroo is alert, listening for danger while a dingo guards its territory.

Over 40 years as an artist, Mr Harvey has worked in a variety of media; painting, collages and sculpting with metal as well as his current interest in recycled wood.

He has made a name for his quirky and idiosyncratic dog sculptures, which have featured at Sculpture by the Sea, where he is a regular exhibitor, and he has won both the People’s Choice Award and the Children’s Choice Award.

His current exhibition titled ‘Early Bird’ is on at the Robin Gibson Gallery in Darlinghurst until June 17.

he Salvation Army is calling for volunteers to give up a few hours of their time to collect for the Red Shield Appeal next weekend, May 24 and 25.

The Salvation Army’s Inner West Major, Peter Sutcliffe, said they operate a number of programs across the Inner West including Community Welfare Assistance, University Chaplain programs, youth programs and the Mainly Music program for parents and toddlers.

“The residents of the Inner West and Australians across the country can help us ensure that we reach our target of $10 million for this year’s Doorknock Weekend,” Major Sutcliffe said.

“Volunteers who are willing to spare a few hours to rally around the Inner West community are key to The Salvation Army reaching our goals and raising funds that go directly back into our programs and social services.”

Major Sutcliffe said the generosity of the people of the Inner West will help to ensure that the organisation can continue to support the vast amount of people in need of social services.

“Australia is going through a major economic transition and many families do face an uncertain future, many people who have been well off in the past are now genuinely worried about their future,” Major Harmer said.

“The Salvation Army can pick up families who fall on hard times and help with issues

from drug, alcohol and gambling rehabilitation to food assistance, skills development and job placement. It’s imperative that we maintain these services and the Red Shield Appeal Doorknock is integral to providing the funds so we can continue to help those that need it.”

A philanthropic author and inspirational speaker in Sweden is offering a weeklong holiday free of charge on one of three islands he owns off Stockholm for entrepreneurs, inventors, writers and pure dreamers to seek mental inspiration for their projects.

Fredrik Haren says that being cut off from civilisation on one of his islands will hopefully allow those he gives a week to a chance “to re-discover their creative or entrepreneurial fire”.

Successful applications get an island to themselves, and can take three or five guests, depending on which island they are allocated to.

They only have to meet their own costs

to get to Stockholm, and the costs of their food and drinks for the week.

ast week’s Eurovision song contest saw bearded Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst take out the top gong. Now the organisers of the Sydneyvision song contest are encouraging local musicians (and drag queens) to get cracking on their entries for the 2014 contest.

To enter you need to write an original song about a Sydney suburb, think Outline’s ‘Cicada that ate Five Dock’ or ‘Miracle in Marrickville’ by John Kennedy’s Love Gone Wrong.

You then need to make a video clip, which includes either a high five or the number five in it somewhere, because this is the fifth year the contest will be held, and get the finished product to the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre by Tuesday, July 29 along with your $10 entry fee.

At stake is a $500 prize from the Newtown Precinct Business Association and a gig at the 2014 Newtown Festival. There are additional prizes for second, third, the People’s Choice plus a new Youth Prize for entrants under 18-years-old.

Last year’s winner Martha Chess Phelps would have been eligible for both the top prize and the Youth prize.

The then 12-year-old from Marrickville won for her song ‘My Very Own Day’, an ode to her home suburb featuring virtually every iconic image of the area.

The awards will be announced at a Grand Final screening at the Dendy Newtown on Wednesday, August 27. 14 finalists will have their videos shown on the evening.

Organiser Ken Saunders from the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre said the event was inspired by Eurovision and a desire to have a bit of fun at its expense.

But one area where they differ greatly is that the songs are actually quite good in Sydneyvision.

“They can go from the wildly satiric to the romantic to the deadly serious but underneath there is always an affection for the local neighbourhood,” Mr Saunders said.

He said there are always entries from Newtown and Marrickville but lots of other suburbs get featured too.

“Last year we had entries from as far afield as Sylvania Waters, Prestons and Whale Beach but consistent across the entries is a celebration of local community,” he said.

Armed robbery Police are appealing for information after an armed robbery of a hotel at Petersham on Wednesday. About 8.30pm, two men with their faces covered entered a hotel on Parramatta Road allegedly armed with an axe and knife.

Police have been told the pair demanded money from staff members, who complied. The men were last seen running along Phillip Street towards Margaret Street with cash. No one was injured during the incident.

Officers from Marrickville Local Area Command attended the hotel and estab-

lished a crime scene. Detectives would now like to speak to two men who may be able to assist with inquiries.

The first man is described as being approximately 168cm tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black hooded top, black face covering, grey or green cargo pants and grey shoes.

More prisoners Increased arrest rates and greater imprisonment rates had driven an increase in the NSW prison population, according to the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Attorney General Brad Hazzard said.

“The number of people arrested has increased even though the crime rate has been consistently falling, and the people of NSW should feel safer than ever,” he said.

BOCSAR has found that the number of people arrested has been increasing and a greater proportion of offenders have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment. The Government said that room in prisons is a challenge that is being addressed.

The colour of Cuba New exhibition as part of Head On photographic festival

Budget backlash Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli has reaffirmed the NSW Government’s commitment to fund all its obligations under the Gonski Agreement.

“When we signed up to Gonski, NSW committed an extra $1.76 billion in school funding. We will honour our obligations under the Agreement and we call on the Commonwealth Government to do the same,” Mr Piccoli said.

Mr Piccoli said he will meet with all school sectors to plan a strategy to ensure the Commonwealth Government meets its commitments.

“As Minister for Education I am bitterly disappointed that the Commonwealth Government has walked away from a signed agreement with NSW,” he said.

ead On is Australia’s largest photographic festival and this year, two Dulwich Hill photographers are taking part with their own exhibition showcasing the beauty of Cuba.

Ralf Hesse and Louise Walpole spent a month travelling around the island at the beginning of the year.

Ms Walpole said their exhibition ‘Esta Vida Cubana’, showcasing more than 70 images in large and small format prints, reveals the diversity, colour and raw emotion of Cuba, as it is today.

She said the two have different styles but she was surprised when the photographs were hung on walls, it wasn’t always obvious who had taken which shot.

“What Ralf does is take lots of pictures of architecture and, in Cuba, the cars. He does these sweeping shots of buildings

and streets and how people interact with them,” Ms Walpole said.

“I’m more drawn to portraiture. I took just one lens, a fixed 50mm lens so I had to interact a lot with people. It made for some interesting conversation particularly when you don’t speak much Spanish.”

Esta Vida Cubana is on at the Art Est Gallery located at 67 Lords Road, Leichhardt until June 8.

The official opening will be this Saturday, May 17 from 3pm to 5pm.

There have been plenty of incidents at Tower Bridge that make this London icon an interesting visit DAVE ELLIS

s evening fell across London on December 30, 1952, bus driver Albert Gunter must have wondered if he’d lapsed into a nightmare as he started driving his Number 78 bus across Tower Bridge straddling the River Thames.

For the centre of the bridge comprises two 30m long hinged bascules (or leaves) that open upwards at over 80 degrees to allow ships to pass through, and to his horror the one he was on was rising at an increasingly sickening angle right under his bus and its 20 passengers.

Making a split-second decision, Albert dropped two gears and gunned the engine of the cumbersome double-decker as fast as it would go – miraculously leaping the vehicle forward from the bascule, and somehow “flying” it through mid-air to drop, deafeningly but still upright, almost two metres down onto the opposite leaf that had not yet begun to rise.

His conductor suffered a broken leg, 12 passengers received minor injuries, and Albert himself was given a 10 pound reward for his heroics (about AU$450 in

today’s money), with a subsequent inquiry finding the bascule had been raised due to a mix-up amongst staff.

There’ve been plenty of other mix-ups over the years with the timing of Tower Bridge’s openings, the most bizarre involving a motorcade of US President Bill Clinton in May 1997.

The President and British Prime Minister, Tony Blair had dined at a restaurant on the banks of the Thames that day, and were warned that Tower Bridge, which they needed to cross to get back into Central London, had been booked to open in the early afternoon for a tourist sailing barge, the Gladys, to pass through.

Because he was late leaving the restaurant, President Clinton got to the bridge and his limousine and lead security vehicles made it across. But to the horror of his tailing security agents, the two bascules had begun rising before those agents, too, could get across. Screeching to a stop they watched in disbelief as their President disappeared unprotected into the chaos of London traffic on the other side of the river. When asked why they’d cut the motorcade in two, bridge staff said they’d opened the bridge on schedule as no-one at the American Embassy had answered their phonecalls.

Waiting period: Some insurers have a waiting period of 21 days and others for up to two years for certain conditions like dental work or oral surgery.

2. Excluded breed specific conditions: Some insurers won’t pay for spinal surgery in dachshunds or joint problems in bulldogs. Make sure you ask the insurer directly whether they exclude any conditions in your pet’s breed.

3. Cover for life: A few insurers will only cover a particular condition for a year after diagnosis, other insurers cover the condition for life, as long as it wasn’t pre-existing.

I often receive questions on diet, but I wanted to include the following one from Kylie M this week, as it covered a few of the main areas.

Hi Dave you have the best column in the world and you’re obviously the best trainer ever! Okay, I made that part up, here is the real question.

We are curious as to your definition of a ‘healthy diet’ as ours differ, vegan versus meat eater.

I’m the meat eater and find that I can sustain my ideal weight eating lots of meat, I’m 59kg and 166cm tall but with unwanted stomach fat, and I walk 10,000 steps per day. I have a vegan boyfriend who has the metabolism of a Bengal tiger and has lost 7kg and now weighs 65kg. He runs and does weights at the gym.

Who’s right?

I’m assuming that the weight you’re at is a healthy one for your frame. With any diet it really relates to the individual.

A human body is capable of making do with almost any diet for a length of time, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good diet.

Always take your own results as the main guide.

If someone on a vegan diet lost 7kg and is ravenously hungry all the time, I would wonder if they are getting enough nutrition. For instance, getting complete protein and vitamin B12 are always a challenge to vegans. He’s doing weights at the gym but is he gaining muscle mass? Do his energy levels or say, his run times, improve from workout to workout?

With a high meat diet sometimes carbohydrates are forgotten. Getting enough fibre and micro nutrients from good fruits and vegetables may become an issue.

How is digestion and elimination? I recently attended the ACNEM Conference in Queensland, and even the top professors in medicine all agreed how important a good diet was for reducing or preventing pretty much all forms of sickness.

It all starts with good, unprocessed, real food, lots of water and getting back in tune with how each meal makes you feel!

When it comes to your unique diet, trust yourself to experiment and become the expert.

“We like to get the audiences involved, engage the audience, so that they have as much fun as we do,” Edwards said.

The show allows music fans the chance to experience a taste of the country music greats, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers while also giving them the chance to experience a tribute to the legendary Johnny Cash.

“Johnny Cash, of course is no longer with us, so people do not have an opportunity to go and see Johnny Cash. However, coming to our show they’re going to walk away from there and they’re going to say, ‘that’s like seeing Johnny Cash, these guys are top notch’,” Edwards said.

And he loves knowing that thousands of fans have shared in their passion for these iconic performers.

“One of the best compliments I get is, someone will come up after the show and go, ‘you know what, I’m a really big Kenny Rogers fan, I always have been, and he would be proud of you, you nailed it,’ and that just makes me feel so good.”

For a member of a cover band there could be no greater joy than meeting the person whose music has inspired your

own musical career. Edwards has been lucky enough to meet Kenny Rogers on two occasions. Their first meeting was during a series of outdoor shows in Billings, Montana.

Edwards was approached by a promoter and informed that Rogers had seen his performance, liked what he saw and wanted him to come to a show.

“I got to go backstage and meet Kenny, we got a picture together and we chatted a little bit. The last thing he said to me when I was leaving, he said, ‘now don’t go out getting me into any trouble’. I took that to heart, I think of myself as a Kenny Rogers ambassador,” Edwards said.

When all is said and done, the reason why The Kings of Country get on stage each night and perform the songs of their heroes is simple.

“We love the music, we love the songs, never get tired of them, never get tired of delivering them because they come from the heart,” he said.

And clued in on all the tricks of the trade is Marty Edwards, Kenny Rogers impersonator with The Kings of Country.

“Number one, you’ve got to have the look for sure. Number two, you’ve got to have the sound and number three, which I think is just as important as the first two, it’s the mannerisms.”

Edwards has been performing with The Kings of Country for almost nine years now, along with Phillip Bauer (Johnny Cash) and Marion Deaton (Willie Nelson).

After meeting in Las Vegas at a convention, the three talented musicians decided they would combine their acts to bring audiences a broader experience, with music from some of the world’s biggest country artists.

“We’re looking at three absolutely huge legends in country music – Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers. All of us have worked very, very hard honing the character and studying the character. Because it’s more than just singing a Kenny Rogers song, we become the character that we’re portraying,” Edwards said.

“The characters themselves, they’re larger than life. They have such a longevity in the industry over years and years with so many hits.”

The Kings of Country have formed a special bond with Australian audiences since their first time touring down under.

“Our first year in Australia went very, very well so we keep coming back and having fun and it’s been great for us,” Edwards said.

“For us it’s kind of like coming home when we come to Australia. The audiences have been so receptive and treated us so well. People that we’ve met and become friends with go out of their way to help us out with whatever we need.”

This relationship with Australian audiences has inspired The Kings of Country to write a special tribute song, dedicated to some Aussie heroes. “‘God Bless Australia’, it’s a song and we dedicate it to the men and women of the Australian armed forces and I can tell you on more than one occasion singing this song my eyes get a little moist because it’s so well received by the people, it’s just our way of saying, ‘hey Australia we love you’,” Edwards said.

Audiences can expect to hear their favourite tracks from the country stars including Kenny Rogers’s hits ‘Lady’ and ‘The Gambler’. The Kings of Country also like to make sure their fans get an interac-

Little Voice is a big hit here’s no business like show business and Jim Cartwright’s acclaimed play ‘The Rise and Fall of Little Voice’ explores what happens when people take that mantra to extremes.

It tells the story of a young girl called Little Voice or LV who is unable to come to terms with the death of her father.

She becomes a recluse, listening to her father’s old records, crooning along to them and dreaming of the fantasy world they describe, a world incompatible with the gritty working class town she lives in with her unsympathetic mother.

Into their lives comes a seedy theatrical agent who seduces the mother with talk of bright lights and the celebrities he knows.

He in turn is seduced by LV’s voice and the idea that she will be his big break.

Locked in her room with her records, LV has learnt to channel every iconic chanteuse from Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey to Marilyn Monroe and Edith Piaf.

The dreams and aspirations of the three

characters could be compatible but the personalities aren’t, leading them inexorably to a fiery climax.

The play was made into a movie in 1998 starring Jane Horrocks, Brenda Blethyn, Michael Caine and Ewen McGregor, which saw Caine win a Golden Globe for his performance and Blethyn nominated for an Oscar. The play itself won both the Laurence Olivier Award and the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy in 1993.

The Lane Cove Theatre has developed its own powerful, gritty and darkly funny production which won popular and critical praise in its recent premiere run at the Zenith Theatre in Chatswood.

Directed by Christine Firkin, it is now playing at the New Theatre in Newtown with an all-star cast featuring Wendy Morton, Nick Bolton, Kevin Weir, Luke Reeves, Michelle Bellamy, Mark Reiss and the extraordinary talents of Debbie Neilson as LV. Neilson is a star on the rise who recently gained valuable experience playing Dorothy in ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

DC’s Gotham has real potential

hen the folk at Katnook Estate in the heartland of South Australia’s Coonawarra decided to plant Sauvignon Blanc for winemaker Wayne Stehbens, neither the owners nor Wayne realised quite what an adventure they were embarking upon.

It was 1981, and decades before Sauvignon Blanc was to become the darling it is today. But Wayne surprised everyone with the drop he crafted then, and has continued to do so now for over 30 years. And his latest, from the 2012 vintage, is a cracker drop from what he refers to as “an extraordinary year for the variety,” with slightly warmer conditions than normal and below average rainfall, that together meant for early-ripening fruit that could be harvested in top condition.

Wayne also added a five per cent splash of Semillon to this wine, helping boost its varietal grassy notes to complement its passionfruit, grapefruit and gooseberry flavours. It’s a really top drop he ranks amongst the best he’s ever made, and remarkably for a Sauvignon Blanc shows great potential for 10 plus years in the cellar.

Pay $25, and for an ideal match put it on the table with Spanish seafood paella.

One to note: Durif is still a somewhat rare wine in Australia, with Rutherglen being considered its “home” here after canes brought from its natural homeland in the south of France were planted there in 1908.

Morris Wines’ 2007 CHM Durif is a stunning example of just how good this wine can be: it’s got an intense fruitcake, chocolate and spice bouquet. Pay $60.

When Love Comes To Town Channel 9 May 20

Channel Nine’s new dating show ‘When Loves Comes To Town’ will premiere this Tuesday, May 20 at 8.30pm. Hosted by Natalie Gruzlewski, the brand series will visit 10 towns as 12 unlucky-in-love ladies meet the two most eligible single men in each town.

Great news for fans of paranormal show ‘Ghost Adventures’ with new episodes of the hit series returning next month to A&E. A&E have confirmed that from Saturday, June 7, new episodes will return from 11.30pm, much to the delight of eager fans.

Despite a season of record low audience numbers ‘American Idol’ has been renewed for another season. There was plenty of speculation ‘Idol’ would perhaps wrap up at the conclusion of this current season but it’s managed to survive despite poor ratings and less than impressive acts.

I must say this one came as a surprise – Arena reality show ‘The Real Housewives of Melbourne’ will be returning for a second series and will begin filming later this year.

No decisions have been made as yet in regards to which cast members will return but expect most of them to be back for another year.

Coach Greg Matterson said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d take the points but expressed some disappointment with the second half effort.

While the official attendance was 8,972 as it always is, Jets officials commented on how impressed they were with the size of the crowd. They were also pleased to see several members of Frank Hydeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family in attendance including sons Greg and Michael and daughter Maria.

he Newtown Jets recorded a strong victory last weekend over a North Sydney Bears side that boasted Souths speedster Nathan Merritt and dual-international Lote Tuqiri, taking out the first leg of the Frank Hyde Shield 44-22.

As has happened too often this year, their intensity slipped away in the second half allowing their opponents to outscore them, however, this time they had the luxury of a 32-0 halftime lead as a buffer.

The first half was almost perfect football as the Jets had 70 per cent of possession and ran in six tries to centre Samisoni Langi, lock Jack Noble, front-rower Ryan Verlinden, second-rower Rhyse Martin, and wingers Tautau Moga and Chris Taripo.

Jets coaching staff were very pleased with the first half performance saying their combinations were just as they had practised them in training.

Maybe the talk went to their heads, and the intensity dropped in the second half allowing the Bears to dominate possession as the Jets players started to make errors.
