E

xpressions o f I nterest ( EOI) a re b eing collected f or t he r edevelopment o f the old hospital site on Lilydale Street, Marrickville.

In December 2013, Counc il resolved to undertake the EOI process regar ding the si te’s future and a decision to provide a Community Hub on the site was made. “ Council remains commi tted to buil ding the Community H ub and the much needed new larger library,” said Mayor Jo Haylen.

“Council dec ided tha t the EOI process is the best way to deliver this new facility in an economic ally responsible wa y while also protecting the heritage values of the site.”

The EOI process is expected to close in April, and Council will subsequently consider a formal process for seeking tenders for the site.

The communi ty has been consulted on the future of the site since April 2011, through various workshops.

In a little more than 140 characters, here’s why Aldi got it wrong Social media w ebsites lik e Twi tter are a t their best when a story is breaking.

Take for example the incident at Sydney Airport on Tuesda y afternoon, where a sec urity issue forced the Qantas terminal to be evacuated.

While talk radio ( traditionally the most immediate form of media) was still tr ying to w ork out e xactly which t erminal was bein g affec ted, a quick T witter search ga ve me upda tes f rom those ac tually on the ground, e xperiencing the drama and the issues.

But with the good, comes the bad.

Twitter is at its worst when it comes to creating fake outrage and dis gust, and wha t’s worse, the targets of such outrag e are usually so w eak and lacking backbone that they give in to the haters.

Take for e xample last w eek’s stor y about Al di and Big W w ithdrawing a range of Australia Day shirts bec ause they w ere apparen tly rac ist and culturally insensitive.

What did these shirts say that was so offensive?

Simply, they said ‘Established 1788’.

Yep, that’s it.

I mean come on, w earing a Parrama tta E els jersey would be more offensive.

Forget poli tical correc tness g one mad, w e’ve now gone into over-correctness.

And while lazy mainstream journalists w ere out trolling Twitter looking for a story that would whip everyone into a frenzy, other stores sell far

I’m not oblivious to the fac t that Australia Day has controversy surrounding it, and I understand the debate that has occurred over the years about the sensi tivity surroundin g A ustralia Da y and January 26.

But as W arren M undine poin ted out in the Telegraph this w eek, there are far bigg er challenges fac ing the Indig enous communi ty than worrying about a t-shirt that’s on sale at Aldi.

Anyone who seriously believ es the shirts in question were “profoundly racist”, a term used

by News Limi ted this w eek in one of i ts stories, really needs to look up the meaning of the word.

So paranoid was Al di tha t i t pulled the stock, but I still can’t work out why.

Even in i ts own statement, Aldi admitted that complaints c ame from “a limited number of concerned customers”.

In English, that means alarms went off at Aldi HQ bec ause a few people too a ttached to their smart phones complained on Twitter.

And that’s the stupidity of all of this – personal choice and the ability of the community to make its o wn dec isions on taste and decenc y shoul d not be eroded to such a point where the minority constantly rules.

Please, let’s stop the over-reactions.

Council opposes weekend clearway plan on King Street

T

he proposed S ydney Clear ways Strategy by t he State Government will have an adverse impact on pedestrians alon g King Street in Newtown if implemented, according to Marrickville Council.

The weekend clearways proposal is part of the G overnment’s response to con gestion on main roads in Sydney.

Marrickville Ma yor J o Ha ylen said the proposal ma y ease w eekend traffic congestion, however it would come at the expense of retailers, pedestrians, diners and shopkeepers.

Weekend clearways are being considered for other areas such as Parramatta Road in Haberfield and the P rinces Highway from Tempe to Arncliffe.

City of Sydney councillor Linda Scott is also concerned about the proposed move.

The State Government wants to introduce clearways on King Street.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates 235 million people in the world are living with asthma right now, with the most recent figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics placing Australia second, in a ranking by country, of the prevalence of adult’s asthma symptoms in the world.

Asthma is characterised by the inflammation of air passages which causes temporary narrowing of the airways between the mouth and lungs.

Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing and tightness in the chest.

Councillor S cott ad ded the Ci ty of Sydney unanimously resolved to introduce 15 minute parking along King Street which would be trialled for 12 months that would benefit retailers.

She said parking was at a premium in the city especially at adjoining streets that run off King Street in suburbs like Erskineville and Darlington.

“I simply c annot see where these displaced cars will go if clearways are introduced,” Cr Scott said.

The Government is seekin g community feedback and is asking that submissions on the plan be emailed to sy dneyclearways@transport.nsw.gov.au.

Not enough time to consider proposal

he final report f rom the Independent L ocal G overnment Review Panel has been released this week but Marrickville Council is asking for a time extension to prepare a submission on the report’s findings.

The report has made w ide ran ging recommendations for sw eeping reforms of local g overnment financial management, elec tions, counc il amalgama tions and staffing.

Last y ear the Panel was ask ed b y the NSW G overnment to in vestigate and identify options for governance models, structural arran gements and boundar y changes for local government in NSW. Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said Council s upported t he r eforms, h owever n ot enough consultation time has been gi ven to provide a thorough response.

“While Marrickv ille Counc il supports many of the importan t reforms proposed in the report, w e are disma yed tha t the Sta te G overnment has imposed an extremely limi ted consulta tion period, ”

she said. “Not only did they release the report while Council is in recess – despite the Minister ha ving had the final report for almost three mon ths – they ha ve called for ‘evidence-based’ responses and

yet given us almost no time to properly consult, consider , and respond to the recommendations,” Mayor Haylen said.

Of particular note, the Independent Panel has recommended tha t Marrick ville merge with Inner West Councils of Ashfield, Bur wood, C anada B ay, L eichhardt and Strathfield.

The Ma yor ad ded tha t Counc il had sought extensive feedback from the community about the draft report findings, which w ere released last y ear, however none of the proposed options put for ward for Marrickv ille w ere favoured by the majority.

“In fac t when w e ask ed our residen ts how supporti ve they w ere of Marrick ville bein g amalgama ted w ith nearb y Councils, almost half ( 49 per cen t) said they w ere not a t all supporti ve or not very supporti ve of an y proposed amalgamation,” Cr Haylen said.

Marrickville Council will not meet until February, but is c urrently formin g i ts submission on the report. March 7 is the submission deadline.

Gas, electricity bill complaints on the rise

C

omplaints to elec tricity and gas retailers have increased nearly 80 per cen t in the last y ear, largely due to billing issues.

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory T ribunal ( IPART) r ecently r eleased its a nnual p erformance r eports f or N SW electricity and gas retailers and the report card was mixed.

IPART f ound t hat t otal c ustomer complaints re ported b y e lectricity re tailers increased by 79 per cent from 51,092 in 2011/12 to 91,582 in 2012/13.

And residents weren’t happy w ith their gas companies either, with complaints also increasing by 54 per cent, from 17,366 to 26,819 over the same period. Half of all complaints were billing related.

“Although some of the inc rease in complaints can be explained by improved reporting p rocedures, m ore c omplaints are b eing r eceived a nd t he p ercentage of c alls bein g answ ered b y an opera tor within 30 seconds has dec reased,” said IPART Chairman, Dr Peter Boxall.

More people are also g oing w ithout electricity, as the disconnec tion ra te for people who fail to pay their bills continues to rise.

24,888 people w ere disconnec ted f rom their electricity supply last financial year.

Police snapshot Police investigate robbery and attempted abduction

Elderly lady attacked in cowardly handbag robbery

Police are appealing for information from the public following an aggravated robbery and attempted abduction of a man in Dulwich Hill on Saturday, January 11, 2014.

About 11pm, a 29-year-old man drove his car into an underground car park of a unit block on New Canterbury Road.

Police have been told that, when he got out of his car, three men allegedly approached and assaulted the man.

The man’s keys, mobile phone and wallet were taken in the incident.

The three men allegedly then attempted to put the man into a white Toyota Corolla hatchback, however the victim was able to escape and ran to a friend’s unit.

Police were called and a crime scene was established.

As police continue their investigations, they would like to speak to three men who may be able to assist with their enquiries.

One is described as being of Asian appearance, about 20-years-old and was seen wearing a black hat.

The other two men are described as being of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean appearance and about 20-years-old.

Details about why the three offenders tried to abduct the man have not been released to the public.

Anyone with information about this incident or the whereabouts of the offenders is urged to contact the Marrickville Local Area Command on 9568 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be given anonymously.

About 11.45am on Wednesday January 8, 2014, a 79-year-old lady returned to her Terminus Street home in Petersham.

The lady entered her front gate and closed it behind her before walking up the path to her front door. As she put her key into the door she heard the gate latch click behind her. She turned around and saw a male approach her at the door.

The male distracted the lady with brief conversation. He then grabbed her brown leather handbag that was on her shoulder.

He grabbed it by the straps, pulling the elderly lady to the ground and down the two steps off her veranda. The male ran out of the front gate in an unknown direction. The lady suffered cuts and grazes to her thigh, forearm, hand and elbow.

Police issue warning about counterfeit notes Police are warning consumers of a sudden spate of counterfeit notes in the area.

Over the past few weeks a number of counterfeit $50 and $100 bills have been handed over the counter of stores.

The counterfeit notes appear to have a different texture and have a dull/ non-glossy finish. Some do not have a hologram on the clear corner, and the ‘0’ on one side of some of the $50 notes appears to be smaller. It is also common for the notes to be slightly smaller or larger than the original.

Police are urging people and shop keepers to ensure the authenticity of all notes upon receipt.

The Sydney and South Western Sydney Local Health D istrict P ublic Health Unit issued a w arning a bout t he d angers of handling b ats, wh ich c an c ause s erious health r isks t o a nyone who c omes i nto contact with one.

“People should assume that all bats and flying foxes are infectious, regardless of whether t hey look sick or n ot,” Director of t he P ublic Health Unit, D octor L eena Gupta said.

It i s u nderstood m any b ats h ave b een foraging in backyard fruit trees recently due to the current reduced availability of native food.

Dr Gu pta ad ded p eople i n t he I nner West who had fruit trees and come into

contact w ith one a nd a re s cratched or bitten should seek medical advice immediately.

Lyssavirus i s a r are v irus i n Au stralia, however i f bi tten or s cratched by a b at, the consequences could be lethal.

Dr Gu pta g ave a n e xample of a y oung boy from Brisbane who was bitten.

“The boy was bitten by a bat, he hadn’t told his parents and as a consequence, he died from Lyssavirus,” Dr Gupta said.

“If someone is bitten or scratched by any type of bat, they should thoroughly clean t he w ound f or le ast f ive m inutes with soap and water as soon as possible, apply a n a ntiseptic s olution t o h elp prevent infection and seek urgent medical advice.”

Anyone who comes into contact with a distressed, injured or trapped bat should not touch it. They need to call the experts at WIRES on 1300 094 737.

The l atest rep ort f rom t he Real E state Institute of New S outh Wales (REINSW) called Pr operty Pr ofile S eptember 2 013 showed a s ignificant ju mp i n hou se prices f rom S eptember 2 012 t o S eptember 2013 – by as much as 9.70 per cent.

At t he l ower e nd, t he me dian hou se price in Marrickville was $722,750, whilst at the higher end, a median of $997,260.

Unit p rice i ncreases w ere e ven m ore staggering.

At t he l ower e nd t he me dian w as $428,125 a nd t he t op e nd me dian w as $636,000, an increase of 12.80 per cent.

REINSW p resident, M alcolm G unning said wh ilst t he f igures w ere h igh, t hey were expected to go higher in pockets of the M arrickville a rea d ue t o i nfrastructure and proximity to the city.

“A number o f f actors w ill a ffect h ome prices,” he said.

“Firstly the light rail at Dulwich Hill will see price increases anywhere from 18-28 per c ent. P roximity t o t he c ity, publ ic transport, b uses a nd t rains a ppealed as d id m ajor e mployers t hat w ere no w based on the city’s outskirts.

“Employment opp ortunities a re b eing developed i n pl aces l ike Re dfern. L arge organisations s uch a s C hannel 7 a re a t Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh.”

He s aid t here w ere s uburbs a nd a reas outside M arrickville t hat w ere t oo expensive, th at’s w hy M arrickville s till provided a cheaper option.

Yvonne Sm ith, D irector of R aine a nd Horne M arrickville, s aid 2 013 s tarted slow but towards the latter quarter of the year, the market was strong.

“Clearance r ates s tarted t o p ick u p i n September. W e h ad s olid n umbers f or October, November and December,” she told the Weekender.

Licensee Michael Smith said the clearance rates were high.

“October s aw 7 a uctions w ith a ll bu t one sold. November w as t he bu siest we had for the year with 16 auctions that all sold. December was also solid with seven auctions that all sold above reserve, if not very close to it,” he said.

Although Mr G unning a cknowledged that parts of the Marrickville area would jump this year, he a nticipated the housing market generally would drop back to normal levels.

“I’m a nticipating w e’ll g o b ack t o normal clearance levels of 60 per cent in 2014,” he said.

udgie smugglers and anxieties will be c ast aside on Sunda y, February 23 as the world famous swim, The S ydney Skinn y, returns for a second year running.

The communi ty ev ent is in tended as a celebration of life and is set to be a jo yous experience that focuses on what unites us, not what divides us.

And thankfully, i t w ill still be summer when the event is held, given clothes are not part of the fun!

This y ear’s sw im follo ws the success of last y ear’s inaugural ev ent, which welcomed close to 1000 adventurous swimmers who de-robed and swam in the name of unity and diversity, to combat body image issues or simply to celebrate being alive.

Located a t Cobblers B each, the fully ticketed swim aims to raise money for the rejuvenation projec t throughout S ydney Harbour Na tional Park and assist The

Swimmers take part in the event last year.

Foundation for Na tional Parks & W ildlife continue their conservation work.

As a testament to the inclusive nature of the ev ent, there are tw o sw im distances available (300m and 900m), both which are untimed and in c alm waters t o a llow swimmers of all levels to get involved.

Flippers and f loatation aids are also welcome.

Swim waves can be pre-selec ted, allowing f riends and groups to sw im together, no matter what level or gender, with only participating sw immers allo wed on the secluded beach.

The Sydney Skinny festival area, located on the top of the headland, w ill be open to ev eryone and deligh t guests w ith a selection of w onderful arts, food and nudie juice, w ith complimen tary (and well earned!) ref reshments for all those thirsty swimmers.

Aussie Ashes victory takes us back to the days of ‘Nugget’ Miller There’s plenty of history and old rivalry behind Australia’s recent Ashes win DAVID ELLIS

atching fast bo wler Mitchell Johnson systema tically destroy the En glish side in the recen t Ashes series with his pace took us back a lot of years to another extraordinary player with not just the ball, but the ba t as w ell, and tha t was the flamboyant and lar ger-than-life Keith ‘Nugget’ Miller.

Arguably A ustralia’s grea test- ever allrounder, Miller was a hero to those of us in the decade between the end of World War II and when he retired in 1956 – amassing 2,958 r uns and takin g 170 w ickets a t an average of 23 in 55 Tests.

Standing 1. 88m ( 6ft 2ins ) he was an explosive ba tsman, thrillin g fast bo wler and an outstandingly athletic slips fielder, and with swashbuckling good looks and a totally i rreverent m anner, f ound h imself the idol of many a young lady’s eye.

The 2013-14 Ashes win reminds us of the champions of old.

And Miller was not a verse to the a ttention paid to him from those as diverse as State beauty title-holders to royalty (Britain’s Princess Margaret was an unabashed admirer despite being married).

Broad-shouldered, with wavy dark hair, a f lashing smile and a t- times ma verick behaviour both on and off the fiel d, Miller was said b y a Bri tish sports wri ter to have “lit up the dull post -war days” of

England when the Australians, led by Don Bradman, visited in 1948 – the team being dubbed The Invincibles after winning four of the Ashes Tests and drawing the fifth.

And it was not just durin g that season’s Tests tha t Miller made headlines. In a game against an Essex side when he went in to ba t with the Australians 2/364, and w ith Bradman after as big a sum as possible, instead of a swashbucklin g performance to further demoralise the home side, Miller pulled his bat away from the first ball and was bowled for a duck.

Bradman was furious, the more so when Miller turned to the wicket- keeper and said: “ Thanks G od tha t’s o ver,” and strolled off the field. The Australians went on to amass 721 runs.

Keith Miller ’s name is insc ribed on tw o Honour B oards in the V isitors’ Dressin g Room a t L ord’s, the “home of c ricket” in L ondon. One is for a T est cen tury he scored there in 1953, and the other for taking 10 Test wickets three years later.

And he ’s one of only four A ustralians whose portraits hang in the revered Long Room a t L ord’s, the others bein g D on Bradman, V ictor Tr umper and Shane Warne. Nice tributes to a c ricketer whose first impression of Lord’s was “it’s a crummy, little ground”.

When the Aussies ruled Brittania s a member of leg endary band The S eekers, K eith Potger bec ame one of the most prominen t names in the 60 ’s Bri tish music scene, joinin g a wa ve of other A ussie artists who found success in London.

Now, half a century later, he’s recreating the excitement and creativity of that era in his tour ‘When Aussies Ruled Brittania’, in which he w ill share the stag e with fellow musician Frank Ifield for the first time.

The concert promises a nostalgic set list of Potger’s songs with The S eekers including ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’, ‘A World of Our Own’ and ‘M orningtown Ride ’, alon g with Ifiel d’s hi ts lik e ‘I R emember Y ou’, ‘Wayward Wind’ and ‘Love Sick Blues’.

The duo w ill be appearin g a t the J oan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith on Friday, January 17 in their only Sydney sho w, pla ying all their grea test hits and also sharin g stories f rom their amazing careers.

Despite P otger and Ifiel d b oth risin g to fame in the hi ve of c reativity tha t was 1960’s En gland, the pair led strikin gly similar y et separa te li ves, nev er c rossing paths until decades later.

“Both artists, F rank and me, through the mid- 60’s were lucky enough to be in England a t a time when ev erything was happening and En gland was the c entre of

the musical universe,” Potger explained.

“We w ere both born outside Australia, c ame to A ustralia… and since tha t time, our li ves ha ve been going parallel to each other but w ithout touching each other or without

ever being on the same stage together.”

With each performer boastin g a catalogue of chart-topping hits, ‘When Aussies Ruled Brittania’ will naturally focus on music although there w ill also be plenty of reminiscing.

“There w ill b e q uite a f ew t ales a nd narrations and stories to tell that haven’t been heard before, we have a lot of happy memories about that era and it’ll definitely resonate with people who grew up in tha t time… and perhaps for the younger people in the audience, give them an insight into a most exciting period in musical history,” Potger said.

Although The Seekers are considered musical ro yalty in A ustralia, P otger has remained grounded and c an rec all the beginning of his c areer, before their success in the UK, when they w ere just another local Australian band.

“We w ere an ama teur group , a coffee lounge group… all we were doing was just enjoying ourselv es and rela ting to this wonderful li ttle audience tha t w e used to g et ev ery M onday nigh t a t the coffee lounge, then we got the opportunity to go overseas on a boat… and that was when it all sort of started. We ended up in London at precisely the right time we should have,” he said.

With 50 y ears of music behind him, Potger undoubtedly has man y high points, but considers the mid- 60 ’s when The Seekers released ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’ to be the peak of his career.

“We generally tend to think of a succession of thin gs, which probably started with ha ving our first number one sin gle in the UK with our first release, something that I don ’t think an y other ac t has been able to achiev e… tha t was the start of a whole string of highlights,” he said.

winning dance performers as part of the Short + S weet Dance ev ent, on W ednesday, January 22 and Thursday, January 23.

‘Meeting P oint’ is the name of the routine tha t w ill be performed b y Lucky Lartey who resides in Marrickville. Lartey won the M ost Outstandin g P erformer a t the Celebra tion of Af rican A ustralians National Awards in 2013 and is recognised across the coun try as one of the best performers in his genre.

Originally f rom Ghana, 28year- old Lartey is one of A ustralia’s most dynamic West Af rican dancers and is w ell kno wn for his v ersatile and high ener gy dance style and cross cultural choreography.

With more than 15 years of dance training in tradi tional Af rican dance, Af rocontemporary and con temporary dance, he is looking forward to performing at the New Theatre next week.

“I performed ‘M eeting P oint’ a t the Riverside Thea tre in Parrama tta prev iously and w e had a grea t response. I’ m hoping the audience from the Marrickville area will get behind us,” he said.

The stage performance has a philosophical meaning to it.

“We are g oing to sho w the audience what happens when w e dance. A process goes on in our body before i t is manifested. There is a series ofmovements that are invisible that is happenin g within our body and our mind,” he said.

A professional dancer who is looking to build on his Australian experience, Lartey draws on his Af rican choreographed routines that have come from his cultural heritage and the dances of West Africa, set in a contemporary Australian context.

Over January 22 and 23 there are man y other stunnin g dance performances to see too, including ‘Latin Threads’ choreographed b y Paulina Quin teros, ‘M emory’ which has been choreographed and w ill be performed by Theo Cassady and many more.

Modern Family Coming to Australia

Modern Family is heading to Oz! One of the most popular comedies on TV at the moment, ‘Modern Family’ is heading down under. The vacation episode of the show’s next series will be filmed in Australia thanks to a partnership between the producers and Qantas.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said it is a huge coup for Australia to feature in an episode of the award-winning show.

Foxtel has quietly been showing all new episodes of ‘Pawn Stars’ on the A&E Channel weeknights at 7pm. The show has lost some of its polish and charm from the early seasons, but it’s still a whole heap of fun. During the series this week, the boys in the shop paid $40,000 for an Elvis jacket he never actually wore on stage!

I’m a little perplexed by Channel Nine’s decision to permanently move to a one-hour news bulletin at 6pm this year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s what Seven needs to take control of the 6pm slot after struggling to win viewers in Sydney since Ian Ross retired.

The farewell episode of ‘Packed to the Rafters’ has topped the list of “Timeshifted” shows for 2013. 257,000 more viewers watched Julie and Dave Rafter say goodbye in the seven days after the broadcast, according to figures released by OzTAM.

Meanwhile, the big test for ‘A Current Affair’ in its new 7pm timeslot will come when ‘Home and Away’ returns. The long-running soap is a ratings juggernaut and I doubt it’ll lose any of its viewers just because ‘A Current Affair’ has moved. It returns on January 27 with big storylines planned.

It is pretty rare that Perth gets to see anything before the East Coast given the time difference, but our friends over in the west have finally had a win. The third season of ‘Sherlock’ will air in Perth first on Sunday, January 19. It is all due to a cricket scheduling conflict.

he S ydney Kin gs ha ve recor ded their first win on the road in the 2014 NBL season, bea ting Adelaide last week, and are looking to buil d on tha t w in when they pla y the Cairns Taipans in Cairns tonight.

The game w ill be made ev en more special as i t w ill mark a milestone for Kings co-captain Ben Madgen who will be playing in his 100th game.

“To tell y ou the tr uth I already though t I’d passed it. It’s an honour to pla y all one hundred w ith the Kin gs. It’s something I dreamt of as a kid, just to pla y one NBL game,” Madgen said.

He is the last remainin g pla yer who returned to the NBL for the Kin gs in 2010 when they made their comeback in to the top competition after being in the sporting wilderness.

The 28- year- old guar d said he considered the first time he pla yed on an NBL court to be his fondest.

“I remember it was in Melbourne for the first game of the season, m y rookie year,” he said.

"I was so excited and so nervous too, the ball came to me straigh t away, wide open and I missed my first three.

“I still g et nervous, but nothin g like the jitters I had that game.”

On the back of the w in against Adelaide last week, Madgen believes the team has turned the corner , and headin g to C airns to take a win is a real possibility.

“Our mindset w ith sharin g the ball, getting through our sets and a ttacking at the right time, we just felt a lot more fluent on offense. Now we’ve got to build on that and replicate it each week,” Madgen said.

“If we can just play that kind of defence with more offensive execution like we did on the w eekend, I think tha t’s the k ey to winning.”

The Kings currently sit in fourth spot on the NBL lad der, behind P erth, A delaide and Melbourne.

Their opponen ts tonigh t, C airns, currently si t in sev enth spot on the NBL table with six wins for the season.

s Sydney FC prepare to take on fourth placed Central Coast Mariners tomorrow n ight, ma rquee p layer B rett Emerton has bo wed out announc ing his retirement this week.

The quietly spok en midfiel der wrapped up his professional career overseas by coming to S ydney FC to pla y out the rema inder of his career in 2011.

He was c apped 95 times for the S occeroos, scoring 20 goals in an international career that started in 1998 and ended in 2012.

His international club c areer includes pla ying for Feyenoord and Blackburn Rovers.

His move to the A-League was seen as a catalyst for success for football in A ustralia coinciding with the return of Harry Kewell.

This season has seen a naggin g back injur y preclude him f rom consisten tly pla ying for Sydney FC but has not tarnished his reputa tion as a fine example of a local product made good.

Brett told Sydneyfc.com this week that repre-

senting his country was a highlight of his career and an honour. “It w as a n ab solute h onour t o r epresent m y country and to be able to do it for 15 years and play in two World Cups is really special. Playing for the S occeroos is an honour and a pri vilege and I enjo yed ev ery sin gle ma tch I pla yed for the National team,� he said. “The memories I have from wearing the green and gold are something I will cherish forever. “I ha ve been fortuna te enough to share in some very special moments with the Socceroos but it is har d to g o past the w in over Uruguay to qualif y for the W orld Cup in 2005. I t was a memorable nigh t for me as a football pla yer but the joy it brought to all Australians and the football community was amazing. “I’ve had a fan tastic career and I was inc redibly fortuna te to pla y professional football for 18 years but I know now is the right time to call it a day and I hope to be able to stay in the game moving forward and con tinue to con tribute to Australian football.�

Emerton retires the thir d highest c apped Australian pla yer of all time, behind Mark Schwarzer and Lucas Neill.
