arrickville Council declared its support for container deposit legislation this week in the hope that it might substantially reduce the amount of rubbish in the Cooks River and other waterways.

South Australia has had container deposits since 1977. A 10 cent deposit is added to the price of containers and consumers then get a refund of 10 cents when they return the containers to a collection depot. The scheme has had a return rate over 80 per cent.

Cr Max Phillips, who took the motion to Council, said despite all the good work Marrickville Council and other bodies have done over the years to try to clean up the Cooks River, it is still filled with garbage, particularly plastic bottles.

“Quite a few of these float down the Cooks River to spend aeons polluting our oceans,” he said.

“We need to stop these bottles and cans being discarded so carelessly. It’s not acceptable for the Cooks River to be filled with garbage.

“Marrickville Council has a long history of supporting container deposit schemes. These schemes have been shown to dramatically reduce litter and increase recycling rates. It is a no-brainer and enormously popular with people.”

However, Cr Phillips said efforts at introducing this legislation in NSW were being stymied by companies with vested interests.

“A major barrier to the implementation of a container deposit scheme is lobbying,” he said.

Count down until take off: Second airport could provide respite The announcement that the Federal Government is finally going to start construction on Sydney’s second airport at Badgerys Creek will please many in the Inner West although we will have to wait quite a while for any respite from aircraft noise.

The decision is the right one. Kingsford Smith Airport is almost full and has no physical capacity to expand so the only way it would be able to cope with additional traffic is by increasing the number of flights allowed in and out of the airport every hour or increasing its hours of operation.

Neither option would be welcomed by local residents as they would both substantially increase aircraft noise in the local area and reduce quality of life. The only solution is to build a second airport on the outskirts of the city and Badgerys Creek is the ideal spot.

Many other suggestions have been put forward, most recently Wilton, Richmond and Canberra.

Wilton was taken most seriously of the three but had a number of environmental concerns, particularly in the area of mine subsidence and the effect such a development might have on Sydney’s water catchment.

Richmond was ruled out because it had its own site constraints meaning it would also reach capacity before too long and a third airport would be required. Canberra was too far away to be taken seriously.

Badgerys Creek has many factors in its favour.

It is far enough away from Sydney that relatively few people will be affected by noise around it.

But it is close enough for workers, particularly those living in western Sydney, to get there and for freight to be transported to and from the airport cost-effectively.

Possibly its greatest advantage is the Government already owns the land so once the preliminary work is done, construction will be able to start relatively soon. The Prime Minister estimates that will be in 2016.

will take around 10 years to build so we have a long wait yet.

But it is reasonable to expect that once the new airport does open that noise sharing will be able to be implemented at Kingsford Smith Airport as it was promised when the east-west runway was reopened in 1996.

Under the plan that was proposed at the time, the majority of flights to and from the airport would take off and land over Botany Bay and just 17 per cent of flights would be to the north of the airport.

This figure is almost never met and is on average about 30 per cent. In February this year it was 33.65 per cent, a tick under double the target figure.

The reason for this is that there are two northsouth runways but only one east-west runway so during peak periods the east-west runway isn’t able to cope with the traffic and they have to resort to the north-south runways.

A second airport should mean that excess capacity at peak times can go to Badgerys Creek allowing the noise impact to be shared more evenly between the north, west and east at Kingsford Smith.

I also think that creating a job magnet in the western suburbs is a great idea. Sydney has become unbalanced with employment being concentrated at the eastern edge of the city while the population is pushed out to the west, creating the dreaded commute where people regularly get stuck in traffic for hours on the way to and from work.

Large developments like airports create many more jobs than just those in the airport itself.

Many industries like to be close to airports because it reduces the time and cost of transporting their products. These industries in turn support other industries.

Creating jobs where people live has the potential to reduce the amount of commuting needed to get to work, reducing both our environmental impact and increasing quality of life.

ELDERLY MAN ROBBED IN PETERSHAM At about 11.15am on Tuesday, April 15, an elderly man was walking along Petersham Street towards a nearby post office. At the time he was counting a large amount of cash. He was suddenly approached by another male who snatched a handful of money from his hands. A struggle ensued between the pair and the victim managed to hold onto most of the cash. The 70-year-old suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

NSW Health has launched its ‘Finish with the Right Stuff Program’, which encourages kids not to undo all their good work by making unhealthy choices after their game of weekend sport.

NSW Health has joined forces with AFL star Jude Bolton, NRL player Nathan Hindmarsh and NSW Swifts Captain Kimberlee Green to create an exciting visual and online campaign.

AFL star Jude Bolton said “As an athlete I was given the best advice on how to keep my body healthy through diet and training. The Finish with the Right Stuff campaign helps our local sporting communities to educate their players, coaches and parents to make

arrickville Council voted this week to join the Save Our Public Housing campaign with other local councils concerned about the NSW Government’s recent announcement it would sell off public housing in the Millers Point area.

Cr Chris Woods moved the motion saying the last thing Marrickville needs is policies which actively discourage diversity and encourage homelessness.

“That’s what this Millers Point Housing sale does. It’s slipped in under an economic disguise that funds released from the sale of this valuable housing project, will be used to create better facilities somewhere else,” Cr Woods said.

“In reality it breaks up communities for economic reasons and sentences people who need public housing to the far corners of this city where only cheap housing is available.

“As well, it undermines the policies of inner Sydney councils to build diverse, healthy, creative and happy communities for rich and poor alike.”

Two inner city public housing residents spoke at the meeting.

Barney Gardner from Millers Point said the government’s plan to sell off the public

housing amounted to social cleansing.

“Millers Point is on the National Trust as living heritage. That’s the people. If you get rid of the people you lose that heritage,” Mr Gardner said.

Phyllis Johnson from Darlinghurst echoed Mr Gardner’s sentiments and entertained the councillors with a song called ‘The Heroes of Waterloo’.

Cr Sylvie Ellsmore, who is chair of the Marrickville Affordable Housing Committee, supported the motion saying she grew up in Glebe and there was a lot of concern in that area that the Glebe Estate would be the next area to be targeted.

A spokesperson for the Department of Family and Community Services said selling the NSW Government’s properties at Millers Point was the right decision to build a fairer and more sustainable social housing system.

“No decisions on further estate sales have been made,” the spokesperson said.

“This notwithstanding, Government regularly reviews its public housing portfolio to identify properties, on a case by case basis, for individual sale.

“These include a number of properties that are no longer suitable for social housing, properties that are substantially damaged through fire and vandalism and are uneconomic to repair, and vacant land.”

Train derails Cafe de Wheels Cafe owner not happy with train carriage that could be approved as a diner CHRIS CONNOLLY

empe residents are concerned that a train carriage that recently appeared on the Princes Highway might become a permanent feature of the area.

The carriage is believed to be the Step-ASide Diner formerly of Cabramatta, which was due to be moved to a different site in Tempe but is now sitting in a small block on the corner of Station Street, covered in graffiti.

Michael Harrington from Harry’s Cafe de Wheels next door said he didn’t have a problem with the original location for the Diner on the other side of the Riverview Hotel where there was plenty of parking.

He was annoyed when it was moved to its current position in the middle of the night without any notice but assumed the authorities would deal with it quickly.

Now he’s concerned it might get approval to start operating as a business from its current location.

“I spoke to a town planner at Council who said it might comply,” Mr Harrington said.

“It doesn’t make sense. The space is too small. There’s no room for parking. Every business I’ve ever run has had to provide

He said the residents in Station Street were up in arms about it.

“They’ve already got traffic dilemmas.

It’s basically a one-way street there,” Mr Harrington said.

Marrickville Council confirmed that a development application had been approved last year for the carriage to be located at 906 Princes Highway and that a new application had been lodged for the current site at 884 Princes Highway but no decision had yet been made.

Premier quits With the State Election just under a year away, few would have questioned whether Premier Barry O’Farrell would have led the Liberal Party to gaining a second term.

But on Wednesday, Mr O’Farrell made a stunning decision to resign as NSW Premier after it was revealed that he wrote a thankyou note for a $3,000 bottle of wine from AWH boss Nick Di Girolamo (currently under investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption), which he failed to declare as a pecuniary interest.

Mr O’Farrell had previously denied to ICAC that he received the bottle, and in light of the note still maintains he does not remember the bottle.

“I can’t explain whether — I can’t — I still can’t recall the receipt of a gift of a bottle of 1959 Grange,” he said.

“I can’t explain what happened to that bottle of wine. But I do accept there is a thankyou note signed by me, and as someone who believes in accountability, in responsibility, I accept the consequences of my action.

“In no way did I seek to mislead, wilfully or otherwise, the Independent Commission Against Corruption. That would go against everything that I am.

“But I accept the consequences and in an orderly way a new Liberal leader will be elected to take on the position of Premier of NSW.” It is expected that a new Premier will be elected during a party meeting next week. Treasurer Mike Baird and Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian are current frontrunners for the top job.

here are plenty of Easter activities in Marrickville this weekend for people who want to celebrate either the religious or secular aspects of Christmas.

The cutest will be the Easter petting zoo that Marrickville Chamber of Commerce is bringing to Alex Trevallion Plaza this Saturday, April 19 between 11am and 3pm.

There will be a full range of barnyard animals including Easter favourites like bunnies and chicks.

Children are allowed to get up close to the animals and even bottle feed them.

Marrickville Metro will have a visit from the Easter Bunny on Saturday between 11am and 2pm.

The Easter Bunny has hidden five Easter Eggs in stores around the centre and kids are encouraged to hunt them down to be in with a chance of winning a prize.

If you want to combine the religious aspect of the holiday with a bit of fun, St Stephen’s Anglican Church is having an Easter Egg hunt in its famous graveyard at 9am on Sunday.

This will be followed by a brief reflection on Easter and Hot Cross Buns.

Police stop man from punching woman in the chest

Petersham hotel robbed by man with a hand gun

A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged with ‘common assault’ and ‘resist police officer’ in a domestic related assault last Sunday, April 13.

About 5.10am, the man and a 31-year-old woman became involved in an argument after drinking at a house party in Marrickville. Two witnesses observed the man grab the woman by the shoulders and kick her in the stomach. The man then lunged at the woman and pinned her to the ground with his knees. Whilst on top of her, he punched her in the chest area.

Police arrived on scene during the assault and intervened by pulling the man off the woman. The officers attempted to arrest the man but he tried to wrestle and punch at them. He’s due in court on April 28.

Police are appealing for information following an armed robbery in Petersham on Monday, April 14.

Just after 11.30pm, a man armed with a handgun entered a hotel on New Canterbury Road and threatened staff and customers, demanding cash. He was seen leaving the scene in a car, with cash.

Officers attached to Marrickville Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

As they continue their investigations, they would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist them with their inquiries.

He is described as being 180 – 185cm tall, of medium to solid build, and was seen wearing a black hooded jumper, black long pants and black runners with white stripes.

Oversized truck takes down power lines and a pole

Police in desperate search for missing Laura Macdonald

About 11.15am last Thursday, April 10, a 10-tonne truck was driving along Northumberland Avenue, Stanmore when it collided with some low hanging Optus wires.

As the wires came off from one of the houses on Northumberland Avenue, a metal pole fell off the roof and hit a parked Volvo causing minor dints and scratches.

Police were called to the scene and both drivers exchanged particulars. Fortunately no persons were injured and no vehicles required towing.

Police observed that at the beginning of Northumberland Avenue, there is a clearly erected sign stating that only trucks 3 tonnes and under are allowed.

Police are appealing for information to locate a woman who went missing from a hospital in Ashfield late last week.

About 6pm on Friday, April 11, 37-year-old Laura Macdonald went missing from a private hospital on Milton Street, Ashfield.

Police hold serious concerns for Laura’s welfare as she requires daily medication and has not been seen or heard from since Friday night.

She is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 165cm tall with a large build, curly, brown hair and brown eyes.

Laura was last seen wearing a red hooded jumper, black pants and possibly carrying a black bag.

Mural’s message on smoking Too many Aboriginal people smoke, but a new project aims to reduce statistics

A

boriginal artists Danny Eastwood and his son Jamie recently helped students at Sydney Secondary College (Blackwattle Bay Campus) create a mural depicting the effects of smoking on indigenous communities.

The project was funded by an Aboriginal Tobacco Control Project community grant, which support activities to help encourage Aboriginal communities quit smoking.

The Project is a partnership between a number of groups including The Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern, Sydney Local Health District Health Promotion Service and Aboriginal Health Units.

The project aims to reduce smoking prevalence in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population residing in the Sydney Local Health District area by five per cent over a three year period.

The community grants program allows applicants to request up to $2,000 for community activities or resources that help support the aims of the Aboriginal Tobacco Control Project.

The Acting Director of the Health Promotion Service, Mandy Williams, said the mural was a fantastic use of the grants and

a great way to push anti-tobacco messages.

“The students really enjoyed the opportunity to create the mural at the front of the school, which will provide a permanent smoke free message,” Ms Williams said.

“We know people in our area want to quit. A survey of 685 community members in the south west and inner west of Sydney found that 71.5 per cent were seriously considering or had decided to quit smoking in the next six months.”

Sol Bellear from the Aboriginal Medical Service said they got involved in the Project because too many Aboriginal people were dying from smoking related illness and they were dying too young.

“National statistics show that 60 per cent of the Aboriginal population are smokers,” Mr Bellear said.

“We want to prolong our life. We want our men to grow up with their grandchildren and great grandchildren, the same way their non-Aboriginal counterparts do.”

Mr Bellear said in addition to health concerns, the cost of cigarettes also caused problems.

“People are going without food because of the cost of cigarettes. It causes people to break into shops to steal cigarettes. It creates another kind of poverty,” he said.

he Federal Government is planning changes to the way it funds Home and Community Care (HACC) services such as Meals on Wheels or Home Help. But the people who provide these services are concerned that the changes may force the closure of some existing services.

Tom Foster Community Care in Newtown serves about 3,000 meals every month to citizens living in the Marrickville and Leichhardt local government areas who are frail aged, have a disability, or are a carer.

Coordinator Losena Kapeli said they know they are funded up until June next year but haven’t been told yet what will happen after that.

“There are lots of rumours flying around but we can’t make planning decisions based on rumours. We just have to concentrate on the day-to-day business,” Ms Kapeli said.

“We have a lot of dedicated volunteers and I hope we can continue to provide this service into the future.”

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said 20 per cent of HACC services are run by councils, like Meals on Wheels.

pril marks the beginning of Ringtail Possum breeding season, which means you’re more likely to see them out and about as they wander around in search of a mate.

The Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife’s Susanna Bradshaw says the best time to spot a ringtail is around dusk, climbing overhead along the wires, or rustling around in the treetops.

“The possums that sound like elephants trampling across your roof at night are likely to be Brushtail Possums,” Ms Bradshaw said.

“But Ringtail Possums, which you’re more likely to see at the moment as they search for mates, are smaller and daintier than Brushies. They don’t tend to live in your roof like Brushies sometimes do, as Ringtails prefer to build themselves a cosy tree-nest out of sticks, called a drey.”

Ms Bradshaw says the tail is the easiest way to tell the two species apart.

“A Ringtail’s tail has a white tip on the end, and is much thinner, and less furry than a Brushie’s tail,” Ms Bradshaw said.

“The Ringtail’s prehensile tail can be used like an extra hand. This is where its

“So don’t be surprised if you see one

carrying sticks, bark or other nesting material curled up in its tail as it travels around.”

Sydney Water’s new look Old pumping station turned into a work of art

ydney Water and Marrickville Council have teamed up with local street artist Sid Tapia to produce a beautiful public artwork at the Sydney Water stormwater basin near Sydenham Station.

The artwork ‘Let it Shine’ covers a 75 square metre section of wall on an old pumping station facing the railway line and features a cartoon representation of a laughing girl surrounded by a number of balloons.

Mr Tapia said the girl in the artwork was his daughter Skylar and the artwork was a sequel to another one he did on Broadway titled ‘This Little Light of Mine’.

“Each of the balloons features the name of a friend or family member or the tag of an artist I know from the local area,” Mr Tapia said.

Another important part of the mural is the word ‘Gumbramorra’ at the bottom of the mural.

The site of the stormwater basin is on the old Gumbramorra swamp that covered much of the area that is now industrial land in Marrickville.

“I want to pay tribute to the history of the site from its beginnings right through

As a youth Sid Tapia was a graffiti artist himself and evolved his street art into a career making murals.

He said ‘Let it Shine’ took him around six days to complete and was all done by freehand aerosol work.

Places Sally Armstrong said prior to the commissioning of the public artwork, the building was covered in illegal graffiti tags and looked very untidy and unpleasant to passers-by.

“This work we are supporting with Marrickville Council and Sid Tapia brings an innovative solution to the real problem of graffiti on Sydney Water assets,” Ms Armstrong said.

She said they were pleased Mr Tapia was able to join the project because he is so well known and recognised in the area.

“This collaboration will help prevent future graffiti in the area, and also significantly reduces the future cost of removing graffiti,” she said.

“Sydney Water is working closely with a number of councils on a range of initiatives, particularly through our Liveable Cities program, to improve the urban amenity and enhance local environments and communities.”

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said the collaboration was a good fit with the Council’s support for creative and legal forms of street art.

“Our programs encourage street art and we want to see more murals like this one.

They make our community vibrant and we know they discourage tagging,” Mayor Haylen said.

This means reducing your grain, bread, pasta and rice intake and increasing your vegetable intake (vegetables contain carbs too so you are not going to miss out).

Eating a high protein, low carb diet for a short time will help you lose weight. Obviously if you are changing dietary habits for any purpose it is wise to do so under the guidance of a qualified person; a naturopath, nutritionist or dietician. Averages for those who are ideal weight and moderately active are 60 per cent carbohydrate, 30 per cent protein and 30 per cent good fat.

To lose weight the ratio can be 20 per cent carbohydrate, 40 per cent protein and 40 per cent good fats.

These are just averages and the actual values can be different and should be worked out by a professional person trained in nutrition and diet.

Keeping the memory alive Spare a thought this ANZAC Day for two men who fought their own battles to document the story of WWI

s thousands of Australians and New Zealanders descend on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula for ANZAC Day, and millions at home and abroad honour the day, most likely few will give thought to two Australians whose quietly-played roles were so important in having April the 25th recognised as it is today.

One was a war correspondent, Charles Bean, and the other a photographer, Hubert Wilkins, who was ultimately knighted for his deeds as a trailblazing aviator, cinematographer and war hero.

Bean had been commissioned by the government at the outset of WWI to write an official history through the eyes of those Australians who fought on battlefields from the Middle East to the Western Front and in Gallipoli.

In the latter he had put himself into the frontline and quickly earned recognition for his first-hand reporting on the bravery of the Australian and New Zealand ‘Diggers’ – and though he was wounded at one stage, his writings were credited as a major influence in creating the legend of

Bean knew he had chosen well as the team scrambled over the rough terrain, at one stage attributing much of its success to the enthusiasm and spirit of Wilkins – once described by General Sir John Monash as “Australia’s answer to Lawrence of Arabia”.

“He [Wilkins] was a born leader,” Bean explained. “As we strode and climbed about the difficult hills, the rest of the party unconsciously followed his lead.”

Today, modern-day tour guides still take visiting Australians largely in the footsteps of Bean, Wilkins and their team across Gallipoli.

And at Lone Pine they pause in front of the Memorial Wall where the names of more than 4,900 Australian and New Zealand servicemen whose bodies were never found or identified are inscribed.

I have been a sufferer of oily hair for years, but just in the last six months I have had to resort to washing my hair daily (or using a dry shampoo – bless whoever invented that) as for some reason, it has progressively become worse.

I had started to use more expensive hair care products, as opposed to the $5 bottle of whatever was on special in woolies at the time, when I first noticed the change.

I began to experiment with brands and types of shampoos, thinking it may have been that I was choosing the wrong product for my hair type that was causing the need to over wash.

But, nothing seemed to work.

Because of the regular washing and regular use of heat products, often without protection (naughty me!), my hair became dry at the tips.

Hair that is oily at the roots and dry at the tips is possibly the WORST scenario to have – I had backed myself into a corner with seemingly no escape.

As I was explaining my concerns to my mum and expressing my frustrations, she mentioned a hair care method she’s only recently heard about called ‘reverse hair washing’.

It might sound complicated but it simply refers to using a conditioner on your hair before using shampoo, rather than the widely recommended shampoo followed by conditioner routine.

The theory is that by finishing with shampoo, you are washing out any remaining conditioner that might contribute to oily hair later on in the day.

I was slightly sceptical at first but I really felt as though I had nothing to lose, so I gave it a go.

Believe it or not, it worked like a charm and I won’t be turning back.

As I write this, I am sitting on my third day without having to wash my hair and it still looks clean – I might even go further to say it looks softer and bouncier than ever before but that could just be my excitement talking.

Tips for healthy pets this Easter break

I love chocolate and so Easter is one of my favourite festive seasons of the year.

My dogs also love chocolate and that’s why I need to be very careful each Easter break.

Chocolate toxicity is common in dogs, especially in those breeds that exhibit dietary indiscretion (Labradors and Staffys are top offenders).

However, thanks to the high milk-fat content, the lighter colour chocolates still pose a risk of pancreatitis to dogs that may overindulge in them.

So here are my other Easter tips: Easter baskets: An unlikely threat, but I’ve seen cases in the past where dogs like to chew on Easter egg baskets and inadvertently swallow parts of the straw that lands them with an intestinal obstruction.

Travel: If you’re going away for the break, remember to take motion sickness tablets for your pet and a bowl of water for the car. Ticks are still prevalent in the South Coast so ensure you apply a good quality preventative like Preventic collars.

Microchip: Often overlooked in the rush of everyday life, update your pet’s microchip details if you’ve changed address or phone number. It’s vital to being reunited if your pet gets lost.

One question came in this week about a workout for time poor people. All of us at times find we get a little stretched to fit a workout in.

One effective and simple method is to get back to basics; work as much muscle as you can as hard as you can in whatever time you have.

Forget bicep curls or eyebrow raises. Perform a big compound movement, which means the more joints moving the better.

Get as much weight as you can safely handle and move it as fast as you can.

However, unless you are extremely fit already, an all out set of that won’t last for very long before you feel like lying down and having a rest for a week or two.

This is where intervals are good. An interval type workout is where you can do all out sets of exercise broken up by rest so you can keep the intensity high enough.

Think of the difference in pace if you were running the City to Surf compared to the pace you would cover 50m back to a gate if two huge Rottweilers launched around a corner at you.

That 50m might only be a tiny fraction of the distance and time it takes to do the City to Surf but the actual results, training wise, in your body, would be a whole lot more than the equivalent 50m in the long distance run because of the intensity it was done at.

So basically your return on time invested is a whole lot higher.

There was a study done years ago called ‘Impact of exercise intensity on body fatness and skeletal muscle metabolism.’

The study, I’ll greatly summarise, showed a group of people doing interval training for 15 weeks burnt nine times the amount of fat as a group of endurance training people training for 20 weeks!

Even if the fat burning was just equal it would be a good reason to do it but nine times more is incredible. There is a drawback though. It’s hard basic training, not everyone can handle it. If it’s easy, you’re doing something wrong.

Thirsty fans given a taste of Merc’s new music An iconic band in the 2000’s, Thirsty Merc return to the music industry with a performance at Rooty Hill RSL. Frontman Rai Thistlewayte says the band is ready to debut new songs and reboot their career. ith a string of quirky pop-rock hits in the mid 2000’s, Thirsty Merc became one of Australia’s most promising acts. Now, after a few quiet years, they are ready to return.

The band, made up of easily recognisable frontman Rai Thistlewayte along with original member Phil Stack and later addition Matt Smith, will be performing at venues for ‘The Freaking Autumn’ tour.

They will be returning to Rooty Hill RSL for a show on Saturday, April 26 with Thistlethwayte and the band excited to play at the venue.

“We’re really looking forward to getting back there, it’s been a little while since we’ve played there and it’s always a really, really fun night so looking forward to partying with the fans there,” he said.

Thistlethwayte said that Thirsty Merc will be playing a combination of their big hits, some of the lesser known album tracks and B-sides and possibly even debuting some new, unheard material.

With their last album ‘Mousetrap Heart’ released four years ago, fans are undoubtedly hungry to hear more of Thirsty Merc’s sound and should be able to get their music fix later in the year.

“We do have plans, we don’t have any exact schedule or release schedule in the book yet but what it’s looking like is there’s going to be a pretty extensive tour at the end of the year, most probably from October at some point,” he said.

“That’ll indicate the start of a pretty big campaign and yeah, stay tuned for future releases.”

Predicting the style or content of any new material is difficult, with Thistlethwayte well-known for his unique and flexible songwriting skills, which draw on a massive range of influences including Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra.

He said that Thirsty Merc’s future direction incorporates new elements while also reflecting the band’s classic style; the only goal being “make it good and enjoyable to play”.

After being absent from the Top 40 charts for years, a new Thirsty Merc album is sure to pique the public’s interest, thanks to the band’s high profile and the longevity of their early hits.

But despite their well-established place in Australian music history, the band wasn’t always so secure, starting off as many other aspiring musicians do, work-

ing late gigs in Sydney pubs and clubs.

“We were doing gigs around Sydney for well over a year before anyone other than our siblings and friends were coming along to the gigs, sometimes there were more people behind the bar serving drinks than in the audience for our gigs,” Thistlethwayte joked.

“The one thing that sort of did help lubricate the whole operation early on was a really, really healthy dose of enthusiasm,” he said.

“I had a great bunch of friends who were really getting along great, we all had a bit of a common goal to just kind of say yes to a lot of things and really be open to a lot of different scenarios and just be prepared to really put in whatever work we could.”

This experience of forging out a successful career, along with his formal training at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, has led Thistlethwayte to help mentor younger musicians.

“There’s a lot of lack of confidence I think in Australian education in the creative sector so it’s been nice to actually show those young aspiring artists that we all as professionals have all of those challenges, even if we’re really experienced,” he said.

Thistlethwayte himself has recently experienced the life of an aspiring musician, backing away from the comfort of

his successful career with Thirsty Merc to travel to America to work on a solo career.

Driven by a desire to explore different genres and styles, Thistlethwayte performs under the name Sun Rai overseas and said he enjoyed being able to experiment with different sounds by himself.

“I actually relish some of the anonymity... but that said, I had to be prepared to haul my own gear, set up my own stuff, live like a student at various times,” he said.

“I think it’s been really, really good for me actually, it’s brought me down to earth a lot.”

Thirsty Merc fans don’t need to panic though, as Thistlethwayte has no plans to quit and instead believes that having solo projects on the side helps him to be more creative with the band.

“I find that being able to do those different things helps do the other thing... because you keep your mind fresh, you have a little more diversity in terms of what you’re doing... [you’re] keeping yourself enthused creatively,” he said.

One of Australia’s best known comedians will take to the local stage during Sydney Comedy Festival

omedian Frank Woodley is performing at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville from April 29 as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival.

Woodley, who is known for his physical slapstick style, spent 20 years as part of the duo Lano and Woodley.

The partnership saw the pair perform at comedy festivals around the world, winning numerous awards including the prestigious Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as creating a television show for the ABC. Lano and Woodley went their separate ways in 2006 and since then Woodley has gone on to create three hugely successful solo shows, ‘Possessed’, ‘Bewilderbeest’ and ‘Bemusement Park’.

New Tassie label makes a point

ddystone Point is a new label that debuted last year with an aim to creating cool-climate wines from the rugged northwest tip of Tasmania that are, in the winemaking team’s eyes, drinkable, affordable and representative of the island state’s reputation for quality fresh produce.

The just-released 2012 Pinot Gris certainly suggests they’re on the right track: this is a wine with a lively palate of melon and sweet pear characteristics, a supple mouth feel, and a bouquet of spicy pear and rosewater... certainly reflective of what the winemaking team said they were after.

Local lass Penny Jones who hails from Hobart, moved to South Australia in 2001 to do a winemaking course at Adelaide University, graduated as Dux of Oenology in 2004, joined Petaluma in the Adelaide Hills and rose to become a winemaker there, and returned last year to her home state to join the new Eddystone Point team.

Pay $26 for this one and enjoy with virtually anything from the sea – my suggestion being pasta with a seafood sauce.

One to watch: The Adelaide Hills’ Howard Vineyard has put together a nicely balanced 2012 Shiraz/Cabernet under their Picnic label, a wine that you can comfortably take along to any barbecue.

With rich plum, spice and blueberry aromas, on the palate it’s got nicely upfront red berries, plums, toasty oak spice and soft tannins making it an ideal general BBQ wine at just $19, or equally so with Asian-style pork spareribs.

Popular Game of Thrones renewed CBS in America has already chosen the man to succeed David Letterman.

Stephen Colbert from the Comedy Channel’s ‘The Colbert Report’ will take over as host of the iconic ‘Late Show’ sometime in 2015, with exact details about date and location yet to be announced.

David Letterman said: “Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I’m very excited for him”.

Channel Ten have announced the Australian ‘Modern Family’ episode will air on Sunday, April 27, which will be followed by a special behind the scenes episode hosted by Angela Bishop about the media mayhem surrounding the show when it was in Oz last month. The episode follows the clan on an Australian adventure after Phil discovers he was conceived here.

There will be plenty of people excited by the news that ‘Game of Thrones’ has been renewed for not one but two more seasons.

n 2011, Tempe’s Deonte Williams was chosen to be the Face of Marrickville Festival. Now he’s being recognised for his sporting achievements.

Deonte has been selected in the Sydney East basketball team to compete at the NSW Primary Schools Sporting Association (PSSA) championships in May. The Championships will be held in Bathurst and will pit 14 regional teams against each other to determine the state champion. At the end of the series, selectors will pick a squad to represent NSW at the National Championships.

Deonte’s mother Selina Martin said he was very excited about going to the state championships.

“He loves basketball. He’s already decided he wants to go to college in America and then play in the NBA, preferably for the Miami Heat,” Ms Martin said.

“On Saturdays, he plays for the All Blacks in the local competition at Alexandria, both in the Under 12s and Under 14s teams, then on Sundays he plays for the Sydney Comets in the Waratah Cup, a representative competition.”

As well as travelling to Bathurst, he will also be going to Melbourne in June with the Comets to play in a national competition. Ms Martin thought he would do well at both events.

“He’s very confident in his game,” she said.

His preferred position is shooting guard and his mother says he trains at least six hours a week.

“He and his father are always practising down at the PCYC,” she said.

Deonte also plays rugby league for the Alexandria Rovers Under 11 team but his mother says basketball is his passion Tempe P&C president Michelle Maconachie said this was the first time that a Tempe Public School student had ever been selected to be part of the Sydney East team.

“The students and teachers along with the Tempe P&C are very excited about Deonte representing the school next month,” Ms Maconachie said.

“What makes this even more special is that Deonte is the youngest child on the team being aged 10 and currently in Year 5 whilst most of his fellow players are in Year 6.”

Ms Maconachie said the P&C provided Deonte and his family with a cheque to assist with the costs associated with the trip to Bathurst.
