lice Street in Newtown was closed for around nine hours last Friday after a 15-metre high boring machine toppled over on a construction site, hitting a parked car on the street.

No-one was injured in the incident, which occurred at about 12.30pm on the Industri site between Pearl Street and Walenore Avenue.

The machine, which was being used to drill piles near the perimeter of the site, was in the process of being moved to a new location when the right side sank into a ditch and it overbalanced.

The boring head knocked over part of the perimeter fence and hit a white Peugeot 306 shattering one of its windows.

The operator of the machine was able to remove himself from the cab then police, fire brigade and WorkCover officials were called to the scene.

Local resident Frances Reitmans said she had been walking her dog down the footpath where the accident happened earlier the same day.

“The crane was in the same place. It’s scary to think it could have happened when I was there,” Ms Reitman said.

Alice Street was blocked off to all but local traffic between King Street and Edgeware Road and a small section around the incident site was blocked off to pedestrian traffic while they attempted to right the fallen machine. Two other cranes were brought in for that task and the street was reopened at 9.20pm. WorkCover are investigating.

Thorpe should be applauded for his TV interview; veil Gavin Jones Champion Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe came out last weekend in an interview with Michael Parkinson. It shouldn’t be news but it was. If it helps other young gay people come to terms with their sexuality that’s great.

Comedian Tom Ballard wrote a thoughtful piece about how, when he was preparing to come out, it would have been great to have a role model like Thorpe to give him the confidence to have those discussions with friends and family.

More importantly, I hope it helps him exorcise some of his personal demons and start enjoying life. Thorpe spoke candidly to Parkinson about his struggles with depression and how he also tried to keep that from friends, family and teammates.

Obviously being gay wasn’t the cause of his depression and he said as much to Parkinson but he admitted that trying to hide it hadn’t helped.

“I was trying to be what I thought was the right athlete by other people’s standards,” Thorpe said.

“I wanted to make people proud. I wanted to make my family proud, I wanted to make my nation proud of me. Part of me didn’t know if Australia wanted its champion to be gay.”

He also spoke of the physical pain of pushing himself to be the best in the world.

“There’s a point in every race where you get to, your body has so much pain, it’s the build-up of lactic acids, your muscles starting to turn off and this is when it becomes completely mental,” he said.

“So for myself, I try and extend to be longer. To kick harder, to produce more pain and more and more and more. And this is how I get to the wall.

It’s just [me thinking], ‘let’s take this beyond what I’ve experienced before’.”

Support organisation Beyond Blue says generally, depression does not result from a single event, but from a combination of recent events and other longer-term or personal factors.

It says continuing difficulties such as long-term unemployment, living in an abusive or uncaring relationship, long-term isolation or loneliness, or prolonged exposure to stress at work are more likely to cause depression than recent life stresses.

However, the organisation says gay, bisexual and trans men are much more likely to experience depression and anxiety than the broader population.

indicates that discrimination, abuse (both verbal and physical), exclusion and prejudice are key contributors to their increased rates of depression and anxiety.

So it’s to be hoped that by taking some of these stresses out of his life, it may help Thorpe manage his depression better and become a person who isn’t defined by the labels and expectations attached to him.

It was also good to hear him speaking positively about the future, of his desire to work in television and his charity, which tries to help improve indigenous people’s health and education by funding businesses to increase indigenous employment. I’m sure all Australians wish him all the best.

On a separate note....

It was sad to hear this week of the death of the founder of the Deadly Awards, Gavin Jones. The Deadlies were supposed to celebrate their 20th anniversary this year.

They started in 1994 as a low key celebration of indigenous music talent and grew to selling out the Sydney Opera House and being broadcast live across the country.

Last year, awards were presented in 32 categories including for music artists such as Jessica Mauboy and Troy Cassar-Daley as well as sportspeople like Johnathan Thurston and Ashleigh Barty; actor Deborah Mailman, artist Brenda Croft, dancer Ella Havelka, scientist Gerry Turpin, and health professional Professor Pat Dudgeon. There were also lifetime achievement awards for Adam Goodes, Steve Dodd, Pat O’Shane and Archie Roach.

However, like many things, the Awards fell victim to the Federal Government budget. All funding for the Vibe Project, which ran the awards, was transferred to other organisations and all its activities, including the Deadlies as well as the ABC TV show ‘Move it Mob Style’ and a magazine Deadly Vibe, were concluded on June 30 this year.

The Founder of the Awards passed away unexpectedly this week and, while his family have not suggested any link between the funding cut and his passing, it has been reported that he was devastated by the decision that effectively ended the business.

He may not have achieved the global recognition that Thorpe did but his achievements were lauded within the indigenous community and he will be sorely missed.

Breakfast Club changes lives Pilot program reduces truancy, encourages healthy eating and exercise CHRIS CONNOLLY

fter a successful pilot program earlier this year, the Marrickville Souths Breakfast Club is returning to help local disadvantaged youth improve their health and overcome issues of truancy and unemployment.

The 10 week pilot program was held at the Marrickville PCYC at 6.30am twice a week during Term One of the school year.

It was designed to attract Aboriginal young people (12 to 24) from the south Marrickville area, providing them with regular exercise overseen by players from the South Sydney Rugby League Club, access to healthy meals and assistance to attend school.

On average there were 23 participants at each session, who were picked up from home at 6am and dropped off at school after breakfast.

A post-program evaluation found that 60 per cent of participants identified as Aboriginal, 40 per cent were female and 58 per cent had swapped some of their regular foods for healthier options.

All participants found it improved their fitness, motivated them to want to go to school and that they wanted the program to continue.

The main organisations involved in the program were Marrickville Council, Barnardos, PCYC and Souths Cares, an independent not-for-profit organisation that works with the Rabbitohs to support disadvantaged, marginalised and indigenous youth and their families.

Shannon Donato from Souths Cares said it was great working with Council on a project like the Breakfast Club.

“This fitted in perfectly with our mandate of helping at-risk youth and we got very good feedback from the schools,” Mr Donato said.

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said she was thrilled at the success of the pilot program and is looking forward to more great results.

“In fact, every single person who hears about the Breakfast Club and the results we had during the pilot is so impressed,” Mayor Haylen said.

“We identified that these kids were engaging in at-risk behaviours and not accessing the available support programs.

They had poor school attendance and unhealthy lifestyles. They are now fitter and more motivated to go to school.”

The next round of the Breakfast Club commences July 22 at the Marrickville PCYC. 12 to 24-year-olds are invited to register on 9335 2243 or 9335 2158.

Australians are being stung by rising ATM fees just five years after the RBA tried to rein in the banks and lower the cost, according to new research from financial comparison website Mozo. com.au.

Mozo estimates that Australians are now paying $555 million in ATM fees annually. Eight of 14 ATM operators have increased their charges since the Reserve Bank’s “direct charge” reforms in 2009.

t was cold, wet and windy with aeroplanes taking off noisily overhead when Adore Delano recorded the video clip for her next single, ‘Jump The Gun’ near Sydenham Station this week.

But the popular American singer and drag queen is confident the video will be a success regardless.

“It’s not that cold. It’s a bit like winter in LA,” she said.

“It’s not really cold like Chicago. This is what I call hot chocolate weather.”

The video was shot in front of the Sid Tapia mural ‘Let it Shine’ painted on the old pumphouse between the drainage basin and the railway line.

Delano first came to attention in 2008 when as, Danny Noriega, he made the final 16 contestants on the hit talent television show ‘American Idol’ before being eliminated.

Then earlier this year, as Adore, she made the final three contestants on RuPaul’s ‘Drag Race’ along with Australian Courtney Act before they both lost out to comedian Bianca Del Rio. Delano said that while RuPaul’s ‘Drag Race’ was not broadcast in Australia, it developed a cult following among people

who watched it online, probably to see how Courtney Act went in the competition.

“I’ve got a pretty good following here in the gay community,” she said.

“We sold out the show on Saturday night at Midnight Shift.”

Her whirlwind Australian tour has already taken her to Perth and Brisbane and she also has shows in Melbourne, Adelaide and Auckland to come before heading back to the States on July 23.

Last month she released an album called ‘Till Death Do Us Party’, which has been well-received.

“It’s made it into the Billboard charts which is exciting. We’ll be releasing it here soon,” she said.

“I like to think of it as a solid pop record.

I want to be taken seriously in the drag community.”

She said drag is something that has always appealed to her.

“I came out when I was 12. When I was in high school, I entered singing contests in drag and no-one realised,” she said.

When she auditioned for ‘American Idol’, she was convinced not to do it in drag and, while pleased to have achieved success purely as a singer, she’s also pleased to have been able to achieve success in drag as well.

“Drag is what I am born to do,” she said.

war of words has broken out with the NSW Police Force and NSW Opposition at odds over how to ensure the safety of train passengers late on Friday and Saturday nights.

Shadow Minister for Transport Penny Sharpe has criticised the Government’s decision to axe Guardian Train Services, which had dedicated Transit Officers on particular services on Friday and Saturday nights.

She said there had been two Guardian services running along the Inner West line and another two on the Bankstown line.

“Guardian services provide dedicated security and give commuters travelling home piece of mind,” Ms Sharpe said.

“A priority for the government should be to encourage more people to use public transport but the Liberals are sending the wrong message to commuters by scrapping Guardian Train Services.”

Assistant Commissioner for the Transport Command, Max Mitchell, said that the NSW Police Force has implemented a better model for managing crime on trains called Operation Rolling Shield, that has replaced the Guardian Services.

“Guardian Services is a security model, and after collecting our own observations and evidence, we found that the service was not adequate as it was focused on only 14 trains,” Mr Mitchell said.

“We found that 95 per cent of passengers who caught the Guardian Service trains were not doing so for the service, rather, because they wanted to get from point A to point B.” He described Operation Rolling Shield as a whole of network approach based on police methods and models that are far more reliable than the old service.

“Operation Rolling Shield is based on police intelligence, putting police at locations that are known hotspots and where there is a risk of antisocial or criminal behaviour,” Mr Mitchell said.

“In two weeks we have made 14 arrests between Newcastle and Wollongong and across the network. We have also handed out 500 infringement notices.”

Ms Sharpe expressed concern that the police are supposed to have 481 officers providing security on the public transport network but only have 401.

“The police are 80 officers short and it is clearly placing a huge amount of pressure on police to maintain a strong security presence on our trains – especially on Friday and Saturday nights when people

Man performs lewd acts wile riding bike in Marrickville

Police make arrest over string of armed robberies

Police are looking for a man responsible for a number of lewd acts while riding his bike through the Marrickville area.

Officers from Marrickville Local Area have received three complaints from women who have been targeted by the man as they walked along a path near the Cooks River.

The incidents have occurred between 4pm and 6pm on a 700m stretch of path between Mackey Park and Steel Park, during the past two months.

The man reportedly cycles towards the victim, steering with one hand while performing the act with his other hand.

He has been described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 30s or 40s, with a medium build. At the time he was wearing loose-fitting shorts and glasses.

Police have charged a man following investigations into three separate armed robberies involving taxi drivers in the Waterloo area.

Between Wednesday, July 9, and Friday, July 11, three taxi drivers were robbed at knifepoint in the Redfern/Waterloo area.

The taxi drivers were not injured during the robberies, and on each occasion an amount of cash was stolen before the armed man ran from the scene.

Each incident was reported to Redfern police who conducted a full investigation culminating in the arrest of a man in a unit on Pitt Street, Waterloo early this week.

The 23-year-old man was taken to Redfern Police Station where he was charged with three counts of robbery while armed.

Witnesses to fatal St Peters crash asked to come forward

Fight leaves man with possible fractured nose, neck

Police are investigating and will prepare a report for the Coroner after a fatal collision in St Peters last weekend. About 7am on Sunday, July 13, emergency services received reports of a two car collision between a Ford Falcon and a Ford Transit van on Unwins Bridge Road. On arrival officers from Newtown Local Area Command found a woman had been ejected from the car, she died at the location. The drivers of both vehicles had minor injuries and were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for mandatory testing. A passenger was uninjured. An investigation into the collision has been commenced by the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.

About 11.30pm on Friday, July 11, three men were in a car travelling on Railway Terrace when a verbal argument began between the driver and one of the passengers.

Police have been told the driver then stopped the car and the two men got out of the car, before the driver assaulted the passenger, causing him to fall to the ground unconscious. The third man left the car and went to the assistance of the injured man, and the alleged offender drove from the scene. Passers-by assisted the pair and contacted emergency services.

The injured man, aged 27, was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with a suspected fractured nose and neck.

he Federal Government’s decision to axe the Non-contributory Parent visa and Other Family visa category will hurt migrant families in the Inner West, says local member Anthony Albanese.

“The Inner West is widely recognised for its multiculturalism,” Mr Albanese said.

“This vibrancy and diversity is what makes it such a great place to live and work.”

He said he was pleased his office had been able to help so many families bring their loved ones to Australia.

“Yet cutting the Non-contributory Parent visa category will close the door on low and middle-income families being able to bring their parents to Australia,” he said.

“Cutting the Carer visa category will hurt families, making it expensive and difficult to arrange much needed care for family members.”

He described it as an unfair and cruel move by a Government that is completely out of touch with ethnic communities.

“It means unless families can fork out up to $125,000 there is no chance of bringing their parents to Australia,” Mr Albanese said.

He said he was committed to standing

up for local multicultural communities and in a bid to fight these changes Labor has moved a disallowance motion in the Parliament.

The Department of Immigration confirmed it was no longer accepting applications for Aged Parent (Residence) visa (subclass 804) or Parent (Migrant) visa (subclass 103) but all applications lodged before June 2, 2014 will be processed as normal.

Minister for Immigration Scott Morrison announced at budget time that growth in business visa programmes will be prioritised and over $300 million will be saved through changes to Australia’s 2014-15 migration programme.

“This Budget allocates almost 68 per cent of Australia’s migration places to skilled migration, and reprioritises employersponsored visas,” Minister Morrison said.

“The family stream will see more places being allocated for partners and children, which together increase by 335 places, in recognition of the strong social and economic benefits of close family reunion, while the number of places in the contributory parent category has also been increased by 500 places.”

He said the Government is ensuring its migration programme matches the nation’s economic and skills needs while also contributing to a strong community.

his week was HIV Testing Week and Sydney Local Health District set up its HIV Testing Caravan outside the Newtown Hub to raise awareness within the local community.

The caravan served refreshments and safe packs containing condoms and information.

Staff from the District’s Sexual Health Service and ACON (the AIDS Council of NSW) were on hand to answer questions about HIV testing.

They said about 10 per cent of HIV positive people in NSW may be unaware they are infected and therefore missing out on vital treatment.

Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive, Dr Teresa Anderson, and Director of the Sexual Health Service, Associate Professor Catherine O’Connor, joined staff at the caravan on Monday.

Dr Anderson said more than 10,500 people in NSW were living with diagnosed HIV infection.

“Our district has one of the highest HIV rates in Australia so we are committed to preventing new infection and improving the health and wellbeing of people living with HIV,” Dr Anderson said.

being offered across NSW. Sexual health services, express clinics, after hours and drop in clinics, faster results and online booking are all part of a new era in HIV testing in NSW. People can also request a test from their GP. “Increasing testing rates is vital because HIV is generally transmitted by people who don’t know they have it,” Dr Chant said.

“However, many people have not been tested recently, do not know they are HIV positive, and are possibly transmitting HIV to others.”

Dr Chant said that during HIV Testing Week, they were encouraging people to check their HIV status, and also support the campaign #HelpEndHIV by posting on their social media accounts.

The a[TEST] Newtown Rapid testing site on King Street offers evening testing every Monday and Tuesday. RPA Sexual Health, located at Camperdown, also offers free and confidential rapid and conventional HIV testing, as well as evening clinics.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research Jillian Skinner announced the Kirby Institute will receive $1.5 million over five years for research into HIV. The Kirby Institute had been involved in nearly every major breakthrough in HIV research in Australia.

Musicians and media go head to head CHRIS CONNOLLY

arrickville’s Henson Park will next month play host again to the Sydney Reclink Community Cup, a charity Aussie Rules game between a team of musicians and a team of media personalities.

The Cup had its official launch last weekend at the Vic on the Park in Enmore. This will be the third year the game has been played in Sydney between the Western Walers (the musos) and the Sydney Sailors (the media).

It is based on a Melbourne event which has been going for over 20 years and this year attracted a crowd of 14,000. It also helped raise more than $100,000 for people experiencing mental illness, disability, homelessness, substance abuse and social and economic hardship.

Cup founder Jason Evans said it started in 1993 as two pubs challenging each other to a game of footy to raise money for charity.

“Melbourne’s two big loves are footy and music so it made sense to bring them together,” Evans said.

In the first few years, they made a few hundred dollars each year, which they donated to the Sacred Heart Mission in Melbourne, which provides food and shel-

ter for people experiencing homelessness.

“Peter Cullen from Sacred Heart founded Reclink and the idea was to get marginalised people involved in sport so they could build community links,” he said.

“If you’re marginalised with no friends or family, you can go to a game with 40,000 fans of your team and you’re part of that family.”

In 1997, the game switched from a challenge between two pubs to the Rockdogs (a team of musicians) versus the Megahertz (a team of community radio and media types) and its popularity grew from there.

In 2012, they brought the game to Sydney with musicians such as Damien Lovelock and Dan Sultan behind the Walers and radio personalities such as Adam Spencer and Alex Dyson fronting up for the Sailors.

This year, Mark Evans (ex-AC/DC) will captain the Walers while Adam Spencer will take charge of the Sailors. Jude Bolton from the Sydney Swans is the official ambassador for the event.

Evans said the Sailors have won the first two cups but he’s confident the Walers will have a breakthrough win this year.

The 2014 Sydney Reclink Community Cup will be held at Henson Park in Marrickville on Sunday, August 17 with gates opening at 12 noon. Entry is by gold coin donation and is 100 per cent family and dog friendly.

Lush lends a hand with river Cosmetic company volunteers to clean up river whilst moving premises

hen cosmetics company Lush outgrew its Canterbury factory recently and had to move its operations to a new site, they found themselves with a bit of time on their hands between the old factory being shut down and the new one being ready for occupancy. So they chose to give some of their time to the local community by helping to clean up the Cooks River.

Megan Yeo from Lush said the company has strong environmental values in its manufacturing; minimising packaging, opposing animal testing and using ethically sourced local ingredients. But it also has a strong community focus, so when they realised they had some spare time, they started looking for projects to get involved in.

“This is something we always wanted to do but never had the time,” Ms Yeo said.

Volunteers from the Cooks River Valley Association and Mudcrabs helped provide training for the staff in clean up and bush care.

The Cooks River Valley Association community group rehabilitates the River and fosters community spirit, while the

Mudcrabs do regular rubbish collection and bush restoration.

The Cooks River Alliance, a partnership of eight local councils, helped by providing morning teas and other logistical support.

Canterbury Mayor Bryan Robson and Clean Up Australia founder Ian Kiernan joined the staff of Lush last Friday to personally thank them for their work.

“I’m a great fan of the Cooks River. It is a fantastic asset and assets need to be looked after,” Mr Kiernan said.

“Right from the start of Clean Up Australia, a group from the Cooks River joined us to try to help clean it up.”

He said for too long Australian businesses had viewed rivers as a convenient way to get rid of waste.

“And by turning the river into a stormwater drain, it effectively became a conveyor belt for waste to end up in the ocean. So it’s great that a local employer like Lush has come forward and put work into cleaning up the river rather than polluting it,” Mr Kiernan added.

Mayor Robson said a lot of people from community groups such as Mudcrabs through to all levels of government were doing their best to clean up the river.

“The top of the River is starting to come good with birds and fish returning,” he said.

Photo: BigBoysToyzFacebook In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says a hotel car park valet in India has been given indefinite leave “to recover psychologically” from having crashed a guest’s shiny white Lamborghini sports car – first into the back of another car and then into a concrete wall.

The valet had moved the car from the Le Meridien Hotel’s car park in New Delhi, briefly got out, re-entered the vehicle – and guests watched in horror as he took-off with a lurch, first slamming

into the rear of the other car, and then sickeningly into the wall.

The damage bill is said to be around the AU$330,000 mark, with a hotel spokesperson saying the hotel forecourt had been wet from rain when the incident occurred.

“The valet has worked with us for 10 years,” the spokesperson said.

“He’s on indefinite leave until he recovers psychologically… when he does come back to work, we may not put him straight back on valet as he could initially be quite nervous.”

he Half Moon Yoga Studio in Marrickville now has disability access with the opening last week of a new access ramp.

Claire Havey, Chair of Half Moon Yoga Marrickville said they have just started new classes for people with multiple sclerosis who want to do yoga, bringing together students with complex needs and experienced, highly qualified Iyengar yoga teachers.

“The regular practice of yoga can help to reduce fatigue, improve flexibility, coordination and improve physical and mental balance,” Ms Havey said.

“Yoga makes people physically stronger, which in turn raises confidence and generates calmness.”

Half Moon Yoga is a not-for-profit, community-based Iyengar Yoga studio in the Addison Road Centre.

Ms Havey said the project to build the ramp was a successful collaboration between MS Australia, The Addison Road Centre and Half Moon Yoga.

“We’re excited to launch a new accessibility ramp for people who have difficulties managing stairs,” she said.

“The ramp has allowed us to open new

classes and new possibilities for people living with multiple sclerosis and other neurological problems.”

Marrickville Council provided $2,000 through its community grants and $3,000 through its recreation grants last year for the ramp to be built.

Ms Havey said the preparations for the launch of the ramp brought some additional benefits that they didn’t anticipate.

“This launch has sparked a broader interest in the benefits of yoga for people living with disabilities in Marrickville,” she said.

“We’ve now talking to a number of organisations who wish to collaborate in making yoga accessible to even more people.”

Multiple sclerosis is a result of the body’s immune system attacking its own myelin – the protective sheath surrounding the central nervous system.

The disease is progressive, unpredictable and often varies in its severity from one person to another. There is no cure for MS, but current treatments are able to alter the course of the disease by reducing the frequency and severity of relapses.

Half Moon’s yoga classes for people with MS or other neurological issues are open to students who can walk and are able to move to the floor and back to standing.

Classes cost $10 per session.

Liberals deny Innari closure Minister for Family and Community Services Gabrielle Upton has responded to concerns that a local Aboriginal women’s centre would close due to lack of funding.

Wise who? Why’s everyone mad in here? WISE Employment is looking for nine people with a mental illness who have an ambition to be a stand-up comedian.

The nine budding comics will take part in a 12-week comedy school training program at the WISE Marrickville office before taking their acts to the Sydney Town Hall on October 30.

The training program will be run by internationally acclaimed Canadian comedian David Granirer and former Triple M radio host Steve Bedwell.

Granirer, who has a mental illness, created Stand Up for Mental Health in 2004 to teach stand-up comedy to people with mental illness. Over 300 people with mental illness have graduated through his comedy schools in Canada and North America.

Last year, WISE Employment took Granirer to Melbourne to create WISE Stand Up for Mental Health, as part of a three-year empowerment campaign to help reduce the stigma of employing a person with a mental illness.

The purpose is to empower job seekers and friends of WISE to share their stories of

mental illness through stand-up comedy – providing healing power to the comedians and having a positive impact on those who hear the stories.

“If you have bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder or other mental health diagnoses and you want to turn them into stand up comedy, then you’re a perfect fit for this program,” Mr Granirer said.

The classes will begin in August and Granirer will train the group from Canada via Skype on how to develop a short comedy act, talking about their experiences with mental illness and other areas of their lives.

He will teach the comedians everything they need to know to successfully perform their comedy act to a 1,200-strong crowd – from setting up a scenario and delivering a punch line, to body language and timing. His coaching will extend beyond the weekly classes to include one-on-one tutorials and extra support as needed.

Granirer will be in Sydney just before the public showcase to run a warm up show and dress rehearsal with all stand-up comedians and to perform with them at the final showcase.

Lastly if you have an artwork or a wall hanging that you want to show off, you can use accent lighting like down lights or spot lights to draw attention to the piece.

This is a great way to add colour to your house – not by introducing colour through the light fitting itself, but rather using the light to highlight the colour in the artwork.

Cocktail you won’t drink twice

A Canadian hotel has a rather bizarre drink for travellers, and it involves a human toe

e have come across a fair few odd creations of the liquid kind but we have found a new one that truly takes the cake.

It’s called a Sourtoe Cocktail, because it contains just that: a dehydrated, pickled human toe.

(We kid you not, and if you’re feeling squeamish already, read no further.)

The Sourdough Saloon at the Downtown Hotel in Yukon, Canada has been serving this bizarre creation for 40 odd years since a colourful Yukon local, Captain Dick Stevenson, found a bloke’s wizened toe preserved in alcohol in a jar while cleaning out a remote backwoods cabin in 1973.

Captain Dick took the toe along to his local bar to show drinking mates, and after one or seven drinks, ordered a beer glass full of Champagne, dropped the toe in and drank it (not the toe though).

Not to be outdone his mates followed suit, and the Sourtoe Cocktail was born. It was brought to the Downtown Hotel as a regular attraction for those possibly head-

ing towards the same state of pickling as the toe.

Local legend says that first toe had belonged to a miner and rum-runner named Louie Liken back in the 1920’s Prohibition days. But when he got word that the Canadian Mounties were onto him, Louie fled town on foot, only to succumb to severe frostbite in the snow.

When he returned to town for medical help, doctors amputated a severelyaffected toe that Louie put into the jar with alcohol, to be found 50 years later by Captain Dick.

Today visitors line-up at the Sourdough Saloon for a Sourtoe Cocktail, but rather than Champagne, most now opt for a shot of local Yukon Jack Whiskey – complete with added, gnarled, preserved toe predipped in salt – with the reasoning that a shot’s quicker to get it over and done with.

And no, they’re NOT encouraged to swallow the toe… in fact there’s a C$2,500 charge if they do, as toes are not easy to come by and eight have been swallowed or stolen over the past 41 years.

Those who do take the challenge have to swallow their drink, with a Toe Captain witnessing the toe touching their lips.

Their reward is a Sourtoe Club Membership Certificate and Card.

Hello Hair have taken the social media world by storm with savvy marketing

I am one of those people who has constant battles with their hair. It never seems to do what I want it to do and in addition to that, it never looks like I want it to.

And don’t even get me started on when it does look like I want it to because then it just falls out or un-curls itself in under an hour.

The thing about these constant battles is that I have always just accepted that this is the way that it is always going to be, so I have never bothered trying to do something about it.

By saying never, I mean until two weeks ago.

In a fit of hair-rage I began researching hair taming treatments with the hope that I would find something, anything to make me feel better about my hair.

As a sucker for cool packaging, Hello Hair immediately caught my eye. The brand’s creators have expertly used social media to their advantage, taking the Instagram world by storm – they have 86,000 followers – and it was browsing here that I came across the product.

It is an all-natural treatment that allegedly reconstructs and strengthens stressed, damaged hair and while doing that, soothes the scalp and alleviates dandruff.

As an avid user of heat products to try and control my hair, I knew that my locks could use a little TLC so I forked out $15 – yes this is incredibly cheap – and purchased the product.

Literally two days after I purchased the product online it had arrived on my doorstep, which is practically unheard of, especially when shipping is free.

The how-to-use instructions were very basic and easy to follow and any questions I had about the product were answered in the FAQs on their website. I coated my hair in the product – your hair must be dry – and left it in for half an hour, which is the minimum time recommended by the creators, who suggest the longer the better.

To wash out I shampooed twice, just to make sure all the oil was out of my hair. For the next three days my hair had a ‘just cut, washed and blow-dried’ look.

My verdict? If you have hair issues like me this may be a product worth trying.

I was talking to a friend this week who is a primary school PE teacher and he mentioned the amount of kids he sees who get a note from parents to excuse them from doing activity. In a feature, ‘Bumps and Bruises’ in the most recent issue of Australasian Leisure Management, Dr Carter writes: “occasional bumps and bruises are expected when children play sport, yet high profile injuries, either those that receive national media attention or involving elite level athletes, can have a major influence on the sports that parents choose for their children”.

The results of Dr Carter’s review actually showed participation in organised sport is preferable due to the demonstrated risk management policies and procedures, such as safe play, coaching, refereeing and first aid, compared to unstructured sport and leisure activities.

It’s very understandable that a parent doesn’t want a child hurt in any way, but to limit sport or physical activity exposure may do more harm than good. From less co-ordination or fitness, reduced social networking, peer interaction to reduced confidence. A well conducted sports program offers a whole host of health benefits.

Buzz word is that album’s “a different animal”

f you know anything about The Melvins, you’d know that frontman and driving force behind the band Buzz Osborne isn’t one to be predictable.

“What I do has always kind of existed a little bit outside of the norm – I guess you could say that I’ve never really been much of a joiner,” he said.

To that end, Osborne, under the moniker of King Buzzo, has released his debut solo long player, ‘This Machine Kills Artists’, and the distortion is dialed way down in favour of a stark acoustic-only sound.

But, if you think that grunge metaller Osborne is getting all folky, well you’d better think again. He says it is unlike anything you would have heard before.

“I have no interest in sounding like a bad version of James Taylor which is what happens when almost every rock and roller straps on an acoustic guitar. No thanks – ‘This Machine Kills Artists’ is a different kind of animal,” he said.

For the uninitiated, Osborne has, for the past 30 years, constantly been redefining what we think of as heavy with The Melvins, whose albums such as ‘Ozma’, ‘Bullhead’, ‘The Bootlicker’ and ‘Houdini’ have influenced countless grunge rockers, punks and metalheads in equal measure.

(Osborne even had a fair hand in their formation, introducing Kurt Cobain to Kirst Novoselic and Dave Grohl) and Soundgarden to more sonically visceral acts like Mastodon and Neurosis.

Aside from The Melvins, Osborne laid much of the sonic architecture for Faith No More frontman Mike Patton’s avant-garde metal outfit Fantomas and grindcore outfit Venemous Concept.

While there’s no denying Osborne’s influence in many genres, he said it wasn’t something he really thinks about.

“To be honest I don’t really see how we’ve influenced anything, but it’s cool that people think so.

“I’d say that we definitely have a few “brother” bands who are on a similar wavelength to what we’re doing but that’s about where it ends.”

When the Australian tour wraps up, Osborne said he’ll be looking to put the finishing touches on The Melvins’ 22nd record, ‘Hold it In’ due in October.

Although he added that Fantomas fans shouldn’t hold their breath for any new activity.

“It really doesn’t look like Fantomas will do another record but you never really know – it’s totally up to Mike,” he said.

“The new Melvins will be out in October so we’ll be doing a fair bit of touring.”

The group will bring the bygone days of bohemian Paris into the present with the lyrical sounds of accordion, clarinet and the percussive ‘la pompe’ of gypsy guitars.

Energetic and playful, they are sure to set feet tapping, legs dancing and bring smiles to the faces of all those who hear them.

The Spyglass Gypsies was established in 2010 by Manouche guitarist Richard Ashby and clarinettist/saxophonist Loretta Palmeiro, who had studied together and performed in previous jazz projects.

“We love the history and traditions of Gypsy Jazz music,” Ashby said.

“But we also love contributing to the genre with our own compositions, bringing a modern slant to the traditional style.”

Ashby and Palmeiro have been joined in the Spyglass Gypsies by Cameron Jones,

also on Manouche guitar, Andrew Scott on accordion and Shannon Haritos on double bass.

They have performed at the Kiama Jazz and Blues Festival, the Illawarra Jazz and Folk Festivals, and the Oz Manouche Gypsy Jazz Festival, and supported international touring artists such as Lollo Meier and Remi Harris.

In June this year, they were the resident band at the Art Gallery of NSW, performing as part of the Max Dupain exhibition while in May they performed at the Justice and Police Museum as part of their ‘Mayhem’ exhibition looking at the 1920’s Sydney underworld.

The group released their highly successful debut album, also called Spyglass Gypsies, earlier this year which has enjoyed airplay from ABC Classic FM through to Triple J and was featured as album of the week on Eastside FM. “Gypsy Jazz is essentially a live music genre. It was very important to us to capture the energy, spontaneity and creativity of our live performances on the record, which we did,” Ashby said.

ortunate are they who’ve got hold of a bottle or two of Best’s Great Western Bin 0 Shiraz, a wine that’s been made since the late 1800’s but of which today only 800 cases are still made on average each year.

And although we know Henry Best planted his first Shiraz vines at Great Western, between Stawell and Ararat in Victoria in 1867, the actual year he created his first Bin O is uncertain. But what we do know is that since the Thompson family acquired the Best’s Great Western vineyards and winery in 1920, they’ve remained extraordinarily faithful “custodians” to Henry Best’s creation.

Now headed by fifth generation Ben Thompson, the family’s recently released the 2012 Best’s Bin 0 Shiraz that was made from hand-selected fruit sorted and fermented in small batches, so maintaining its reputation as an undisputed icon of the Great Western Shiraz style, and internationally acclaimed for years.

This 2012 has deliciously spicy dark fruit flavours and a great balance of acidity and smooth tannins for wonderfully enjoyable drinking. With just 800 cases available, it’s well worth the $85 asking price to enjoy with a slow roasted shoulder of lamb.

One to note: The Adelaide Hills has a well-deserved reputation as home to some of Australia’s best Sauvignon Blanc, and a 2013 Howard Vineyard Picnic label is typical of just how good the variety from this region can be. This one has full-on lemony citrus flavours coupled with spice and gooseberry. Pay just $19.

Bachelor hype is building After years in the hands of other networks, the Olympics Games are officially coming back to Channel Seven.

The broadcaster will air the 2016 Summer Olympics from Rio, the 2018 Winter Olympics from South Korea and the 2020 Summer Olympics from Tokyo. It’s understood the Games were sold for way less than experts anticipated at just $200m. The asking price was $250m.

With the Commonwealth Games starting in Glasgow next week, Channel Ten has announced returning star Matt White will join the commentary team. White, who recently defected back to Ten from Channel Seven, will host the morning edition of ‘Glasgow Live’ alongside former Aussie athletes Leisel Jones and Steve Hooker. The Games get underway this Thursday.

Still on Ten, and season two of ‘The Bachelor Australia’ premieres on Wednesday, July 30 at 7.30pm. Last year this show attracted huge buzz for the network and will no doubt do well again. In the love seat this time is 31-year-old auctioneer Blake Garvey.

A really cool new series is airing on NatGeo next month. The four-part series, narrated by Rob Lowe, will feature 120 interviews including Monica Lewinsky, Courtney Love, Matthew Perry, Tony Blair and more. It begins Wednesday, August 6 at 7.30pm.

ABC1 is about to be renamed, simply to be known as ABC very soon. The change comes after extensive research indicated viewers watch the ‘ABC’ rather than ABC1. For me, I prefer to still call it Channel Two, for those of us who still remember analog TV.

Newtown dumped Roosters say they won’t be renewing contract with the Jets CHRIS CONNOLLY

he Newtown Jets are in shock after their NRL partner, the Sydney Roosters, announced they wouldn’t be renewing the relationship after the end of this season.

The Roosters released a statement saying they had, “enjoyed a successful partnership with the Newtown Jets for the last nine seasons, however further to the club’s formation of an alliance with the entire Central Coast Division Rugby League earlier this year, the Roosters are pursuing the formalisation of an agreement with the Wyong Rugby League Club Group whereby they will be the club’s feeder side in the NSWRL Cup in 2015 going forward”.

Newtown Jets director Terry Rowney said he contacted the Roosters after they announced the Central Coast alliance to specifically ask what effect it would have on the Jets.

“Every indication was given to us they would be renewing,” Mr Rowney said.

“It’s very disappointing. We’ve been with them for nine years. There was no desire on our side to end the relationship.”

He said they would approach other NRL clubs

“It will be difficult to survive without an NRL partner,” he said.

“But there’ll be people out there interested in talking to Newtown. We are considered the

best run club in the NSW Cup. We have the best crowds by a long way. The players enjoy playing with us. We bring a lot to the table.”

He said they saw part of their job as keeping the Roosters-contracted players who weren’t in the first grade team fit and motivated for when they were needed.

He said Roosters second rower Mitch Aubusson said to him one day, “We don’t play reserve grade. We play for Newtown.”

Terry Rowney said there were some fantastic Roosters supporters who came along to the Jets’ games.

“We had a very good relationship with them. I hope they’ll stick around,” he said.

The announcement was made shortly before the Jets’ game against Penrith last weekend which Penrith won 36-20.

“Everyone was down in the dumps. We were up against the best team in the competition with Penrith,” Mr Rowney said.

“But the coach did a wonderful job with the players to keep them competitive for most of the game.”

The Jets play the Panthers again this weekend, this time at the Sydney Football Stadium as the warm-up game to the Roosters vs Panthers match.
