arrickville Council is accusing the NSW Government of reneging on its promise not to force council amalgamations.

Premier Mike Baird and Local Government Minister Paul Toole announced a $1 billion package last week called ‘Fit for the Future’, which they say is about encouraging councils to be financially sound so they can deliver the housing, jobs and local infrastructure people need.

“More than one-third of the State’s councils are facing financial problems – losing more than $1 million a day,” Premier Baird said.

“The NSW Government wants communities to have confidence that their council is financially sound, operating efficiently and in a strong position to guide community growth and deliver quality services.”

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said the Government has told councils they must submit a ‘Roadmap’ by June 30, 2015.

As part of that process, they must meet four criteria as set out by the Fit for the Future program.

To meet the first criteria, councils must have an amalgamation proposal.

“Not only are these amalgamations very thinly disguised as ‘voluntary’, but the so-called ‘record $1 billion package to help councils’ is completely misleading,” Mayor Haylen said.

The NSW Government revealed pictures this week of the new trains that will run on the North West Rail Link. They are single deck carriages with three doors along the side of each carriage, like the metro style trains you see in many European countries.

While it’s not obvious from the supplied illustrations, they presumably have far fewer seats as well, just as European metro style carriages do.

The point of this style of carriage design is to get people on and off trains quickly. Our current double-decker trains have lots of seats but only two doors so when they’re full, it can take quite a long time to get people off as they squeeze past fellow travellers. The time taken to do this restricts the number of services able to run on a particular line.

This in turn leads us to the main problem with the Sydney train system. There are only three lines running through the CBD; the city circle, which will be familiar to patrons of the Inner West and Bankstown lines; the Illawarra-Eastern Suburbs line, which will be familiar to people from Sydenham and occasionally Tempe; and the line that runs over the Harbour Bridge through Wynyard and Town Hall and ultimately out through the Inner West – although it almost never stops here.

Virtually every suburban train service in Sydney – whether it comes from Cronulla, Campbelltown, Penrith, Richmond, Hornsby or anywhere in between – ends up on one of those lines. So three lines with limited capacity dramatically reduces the capacity of the system as a whole.

This is why Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian has decided the North West Rail Line will run only from Rouse Hill to Chatswood when it starts and they will build a fourth line through the city connecting Chatswood to Sydenham.

So ultimately these new carriages will service the Bankstown line as well, which will include passengers at Marrickville and Dulwich Hill stations.

Personally, I think converting the Bankstown line to metro style services is a good thing. It is a relatively short line and, if you’ve ever travelled on metro systems like the one in Paris, you’ll know they cover relatively small areas in the centre of the city while people in outer suburbs are serviced by a different system (where carriages have more seats for people who travel longer distances).

That’s the confusing thing about making the North West Rail Link a metro style service. Rouse Hill is an outer suburban area if ever there was one. Presumably at peak times, all the seats will be gone before the trains even get to Castle Hill and passengers will then have to stand all the way to Chatswood at which point, they’ll get off and have to try to squeeze onto an already crowded train travelling through to the city.

When the fourth line is built, at least there will be some capacity added to the system, although it will be a long stand from the north west to the city.

If we were serious about introducing metro style services to Sydney, we would have a grand plan for how the system would work. That plan would include extra lines through the CBD and surrounding areas such as the Inner West.

It would also turn Parramatta into more of a rail hub. Parramatta is the second CBD and close to the geographic centre of the greater Sydney area, while the Sydney CBD is right over on the eastern edge. If you didn’t force every train service to travel through the CBD, you could have a more efficient system where people could travel across the city more easily.

It would be very easy to turn the Carlingford line into a metro line from Parramatta to Epping.

And there is potential for other shortish lines to be added from Parramatta to the southwest and northwest, which would make commuting by train a more viable option for people throughout the city.

However, I doubt we’ll see any such vision in the near future.

he NSW and Australian Governments announced this week that Stage 2 of the WestConnex motorway connecting Beverly Hills and St Peters will open in 2019, 18 months ahead of schedule.

They have called for tenders to design and construct the new tunnels and are starting geotechnical drilling along the corridor.

While the exact corridor is yet to be revealed, the proposed drilling sites are mostly in a line running just to the west of the Princes Highway with additional sites both sides of the Highway around Kendrick Park, Tempe; Canal Road, St Peters; and Campbell Street, St Peters.

Greens councillor David Leary said he was stunned to see drilling will take place at 18 different locations in the area including St Peters Public School and Sydney Park.

“While this may be dismissed by the State Government as simply exploratory drilling, we can now start to see what the possible route for WestConnex may look like. No wonder the State Government has wanted to keep this all secret,” he said.

“This is sheer madness. What on earth is

this rotten State Government thinking?”

Labor Councillor Chris Woods said he was frustrated by the Government’s refusal to publicly identify the route.

“We had a line on a map. Now we have holes on a map,” Cr Woods said.

“The big problem with WestConnex is the traffic dump that will occur if the project isn’t completed. It may occur earlier if they prematurely open sections of it.”

Roads Minister Duncan Gay wouldn’t be drawn into the route for the tunnel.

“Look, they [the drilling sites] don’t necessarily indicate that that’s where the road will be going but what they do indicate, is that this is a Government... providing better infrastructure and that’s why people will welcome them,” he said.

A WestConnex Delivery Authority spokesperson said the drilling sites are not necessarily carried out along an exact alignment, as the information is used to produce a geological profile of the area, which may influence design criteria.

“Local residents and businesses are being notified ahead of work starting in their local area. The noise from the work is similar to an idling truck or generator,” the spokesperson said.

“The drilling will generally take one to five days at each location.”

“Each Sydney Metro council that agrees to amalgamate will receive $10 million – and councils agree that the cost of amalgamations will exceed that amount many times over,” she added.

Marrickville Council voted at its meeting this week to open a dialogue with five other Inner West councils; Ashfield, Burwood, Canada Bay, Leichhardt and Strathfield, as this was a recommended merger identified by the Independent Local Government Review Panel.

But Mayor Haylen said this action was not an endorsement of amalgamation.

“I worry that amalgamations will be disruptive and do little to enhance

service delivery and quality of life. Bigger bureaucracies do not necessarily mean better, or faster,” Mayor Haylen said.

Local Government Minister Paul Toole said the reforms are about being transparent and putting ratepayers first.

“Marrickville Council has been asked to consult with the community and explain how they will continue to provide essential services back to their ratepayers,” Minister Toole said.

“While the package does include financial incentives for voluntary mergers, the reforms also focus on a review of the FAG grants and putting downward pressure on rates. I would encourage Marrickville Council to attend a future workshop in their area so they are not misinformed.”

“Shonky backyard jobs” banned from roads CHRIS CONNOLLY

he NSW Government has announced it will ban all petrolpowered bicycles on NSW roads from Wednesday, October 1.

Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay said it was a national safety issue, with restrictions already in place in some states such as Queensland.

“We saw three lives lost last year including the tragic loss of a young 14-year-old boy in western Sydney. That’s three lives too many,” Minister Gay said.

“A national ban will happen eventually.

That is the advice of road safety experts.

Given the safety risks associated with petrol-powered bikes, I didn’t want to wait for a national position.”

Minister Gay said petrol-powered bicycles are faster than regular bicycles and can often travel at more than 40km/h.

This is much faster than elite cyclists and comparable with the speeds of mopeds and small motorcycles, making them a serious road safety hazard in young hands.

“These bikes can travel at high speeds but their brakes and other safety components are only designed for standard bicycles,” he said.

“This means they take much longer to stop than a standard bike, greatly increas-

ing the risk of crash.”

Under changes to NSW laws, the ban will include all bicycles that have had a petrol-powered engine attached after purchase, were purchased with a petrolpowered engine or are powered by any type of internal combustion engine. These vehicles will be banned from NSW roads and road related areas such as footpaths.

“The changes won’t prevent people from riding power-assisted bicycles that use a combination of electric motors and pedalling and have appropriate safety requirements,” Minister Gay said.

“Legal bicycles from October 1 include regular bicycles with no engines attached, complying 250 watt pedelacs and 200 watt power assisted pedal bicycles that are powered by an electronic motor. The legislation on mopeds and motorcycles will remain unchanged.”

He said police had been frustrated by the ambiguous legal status of these vehicles and would appreciate clear direction on what is and isn’t legal.

“Some of these shonky backyard jobs are appalling. They are accidents waiting to happen. We’ve seen too many injuries and lives lost because of these bikes and I make no excuse for putting my foot down to get rid of them,” he said.

f you’ve always wanted a slice of the Newtown retail real estate market, the Newtown Central shopping centre is up for sale.

Wedged between Newtown Station and Newtown High School, the smallish centre contains a Foodworks supermarket, a Fitness First gymnasium, Cellarbrations bottle store, and a number of specialty shops.

The three-level centre was completely refurbished in 2009 and is currently owned by Monash Private Capital and Diamond Properties.

“Since acquiring this asset we have applied an active management plan in which we have undertaken several lease renewals and identified areas where we have successfully added value to the property,” said Joey Fridman of Monash Private Capital.

The centre is being offered to the market via an expressions of interest campaign which closes on Tuesday, September 30.

“The shopping centre investment market has been driven by the combination of a large capital injection, historically low interest rates and a lack of quality opportunities comparable to Newtown

Five men charged over two separate assault incidents

Police are appealing for information after a fire at a tattoo parlour in Chippendale this week. At 2.50am on Wednesday, September 17, emergency services were called to Abercrombie Street following reports of a fire.

Police have been told a neighbour woke to the sound of a loud bang and, when he went outside, saw smoke and fire coming from the nearby shopfront.

He grabbed a fire extinguisher and his partner contacted Triple Zero. The neighbour extinguished the small fire prior to police and Fire & Rescue NSW arriving.

The shop suffered minor damage as a result and inquiries into the cause are continuing. Police are treating the fire as suspicious as a substance, believed to be an accelerant, was located within the premises.

The shop doesn’t have a residential area and no one was inside at the time.

A crime scene has been established and police are urging anyone with any information to contact 1800 333 000.

It was a rough week at Tempe. About 11.30pm on Wednesday, September 10, two 23-year-old men left a hotel in Tempe with a group of friends and walked to a building on the Princes Highway. The pair allegedly kicked the front of the building and smashed a shopping trolley into the premises. Two men in the building contacted police and the group left. Officers stopped the group at the intersection with Union Street. The two 23-year-olds were arrested.

Forty minutes later, a 24-year-old man from the building was standing outside when three 17-year-old teenage males approached him and two of them allegedly assaulted the man. Police stopped the trio but the teenagers allegedly attempted to assault the officers. They were arrested also.

About 11.40am last Friday, September 12, police saw a 30-year-old Enmore man riding a pushbike without a helmet on Seaview Street, Dulwich Hill.

After speaking to the man police located an amount of Methyl amphetamine (ice) and an ice smoking pipe in his pocket.

He was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ and will appear before Newtown Local Court on Tuesday, October 28.

Police searching for suspect with rats tail, blue Nissan car At 6.14am on Monday, September 15 a male suspect parked a blue Nissan Pulsar on Renwick Street, Marrickville before walking up the stairs outside Woolworths, opening a gate and entering a residence on Illawarra Road.

A 40-year-old female victim was inside the kitchen with her back to the open door when the male entered the kitchen, stole a Samsung mobile phone off a chair inside the kitchen and fled from the area in the Nissan Pulsar driving north on Illawarra Road.

Police attended immediately but were unable to locate the male or the vehicle.

The male was described as Caucasian, mid-late 20s with blonde hair and a rats tail.

Good Shepherd’s good solution Low income families offered loans for much needed items

ffording large ticket items such as cars or whitegoods on a low income is very difficult.

It’s not easy to put money away when you’re trying to put food on the table and the only loans you can get charge exorbitant interest.

Marrickville charity Rosemount Good Shepherd is trying to rectify that situation by offering low-interest loans for people in need.

Executive manager Lyn Harrison said the StepUP program was set up to counter financial exclusion where people don’t have access to appropriate and affordable financial products and services such as a transaction account, general insurance and a moderate amount of credit.

She says more than a sixth of the Australian adult population is fully or severely excluded based on this definition.

“We assist anyone who meets the eligibility criteria for a StepUp loan,” Ms Harrison said.

“Our most frequent applicants are parents on low incomes who are finding it difficult to meet unexpected financial commitments due to equipment breaking down, such as vehicles, fridges and wash-

Ms Harrison said loans of between

$800 and $3,000 are offered through the National Australia Bank to be repaid over three years at a fixed low rate of interest.

It’s not designed as a loan for debt

consolidation or to pay bills or rent but to give people help purchasing items that they need on a day to day basis or to pay for medical bills or funeral costs and other unexpected items.

“We find clients really appreciate the support provided,” she said.

“Through the process of applying for, achieving and repaying a StepUp loan, clients gain experience in a number of financial processes, such as budgeting, which they may not have been exposed to previously.

“The experience of repaying a loan can highlight to a client their ability to save.”

One of their clients, Sofie, said she wanted the whole world to know about the program and it made her own life that much easier.

“You have no idea the difference this has made to my life,” Sofie said.

“The loan helped me get a car. This has helped me do the shopping and most importantly, it has helped me get back into my volunteering.

“I help elderly people in our area by taking them shopping and to the doctor’s and anything they need.”

break in the weather last Sunday saw Dulwich Hill bathed in sun for the annual Dulwich Hill Village Fair.

“This is the first time this festival has been held in September but we still managed to get December weather,” said Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen.

“The Dulwich Hill Fair represents everything that’s great about Dulwich Hill. You just have to walk down the road to see multicultural Sydney in action.”

Shopholders and stallholders did brisk

business with the large crowds who were entertained by performances from local schools, entertainers and martial arts experts. There was also a wildlife show and a vintage motorcycle show.

Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt said it was always a wonderful event.

“There are so many local stalls and performers from many local organisations,” Ms Tebbutt said.

Federal Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Marrickville Councillor Emanuel Tsardoulias who passed away recently: “He helped create this fair and it doesn’t quite seem the same without him.”

ong serving Marrickville Football Club president Ron Royston was recently presented with the Vince & Val Laws Medal by the Canterbury and District Soccer Football Association.

The Medal was inaugurated in 2013 to be presented to a person who has given a life time of service to football at the community level.

It was named after Vince and Val Laws who had worked for the Canterbury Junior Soccer Club for more than 60 years

and were still manning the canteen and putting up goal nets well into their 80s.

Ron Royston began playing for the Marrickville Red Devils as a nine-yearold and his playing career with the club spanned 34 seasons.

Before retirement, he became involved in the club’s administration in 1981 and has served continuously since then in roles including president, secretary and treasurer. His colleagues had nothing but positive words about him.

In typically humble fashion, Mr Royston nominated his greatest achievement with the club as coaching the U9/1s to an underdog 1-0 victory in 1999.

Andrews Cutts and Mark Bond of Reverse Garbage with Mayor Haylen doesn’t need – then suggested she might end up buying more than she gets rid of on the day.

Mark Bond from Reverse Garbage said they would be celebrating the Trail by offering huge discounts at their Marrickville reuse centre in Addison Road and at ReConsidered, their new reuse shop in Redfern.

“Events like the Garage Sale Trail are really important for our community as they allow individuals and groups to ethically dispose of perfectly good, reusable materials,” Mr Bond said.

he Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre in Petersham Park is re-opening on Saturday, October 4 for the summer season.

Refurbished last year, the centre boasts a brand new eight-lane, 25 metre outdoor swimming pool built to international swimming standards, a toddler pool, a water play area, landscaped gardens with picnic areas including free barbecues, plus a kiosk and new changeroom facilities.

Swimming lessons are available for people of all ages and abilities. Prices start at $15 for the first child with discounts for additional children. Lessons begin on October 13, just in time for the warm summer weather.

For people looking to get fit without placing too much pressure on their joints, there are also Aquarobics Classes on Monday and Saturday mornings or Wednesday evenings. Classes are $14.30 for adults, $10.80 for seniors or $7.20 for pensioners and are suited to those of all fitness levels.

The pool has long been a favourite in the community after it was opened in September 1962 and renamed after Fanny Durack in 1999. Sarah ‘Fanny’ Durack was the first Australian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100 metres freestyle at Stockholm in 1912. After marrying in 1921, she settled in Stanmore with her husband and lived there the rest of her life.

The Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre is open 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 6pm on Sundays. Entry is $4.70 for adults, $2.40 for children or concession card holders with children under four-years are admitted free.

Low prices and a variety of styles make H&M so popular

It’s official: global fashion retail giant H&M has announced two Sydney locations that are set to become the company’s second and third Australian stores.

The rumour mill has been buzzing in the months since the opening of the first Australian H&M in Melbourne earlier this year but until earlier this month, the Sydney location remained a mystery to shopaholics.

It was announced that the Macquarie Centre in North Ryde is to get the first of Sydney’s H&M stores – it’ll be launched on October 16 – and next year, Pitt Street Mall’s ‘The Glasshouse’ will become the second, to open in late 2015.

“We are excited to finally be able to announce our expansion in the Australian market with the offer of not only one, but two amazing H&M stores located in Sydney,” said Hans Andersson, Australian Country Manager for H&M. “Both the Sydney City and Macquarie Centre stores will encapsulate the unique retail shopping experience that is H&M and we are looking forward to connecting further with our customers with our wide assortment offering.”

You might remember from a previous column how frustrated I was that the first of the company’s Australian stores went to Melbourne. I was so frustrated and so keen to shop H&M fashions that I even considered jumping on a plane to get down there and let my shopping instincts take over.

But I didn’t, I stuck it out and now I feel like I am being rewarded with two special stores of my own. The low prices, the variety and the sheer amount of clothes to suit all different styles found at H&M are seconded by none.

Opening first is the Macquarie Centre store, which will span over two levels and will showcase apparel, underwear and accessories for men, women and kids.

Not that I have actually been there, but the Macquarie Centre seems like an odd choice of location to launch the brand in Sydney, especially given that it is a fair distance from the CBD and in my opinion is a little hard to get to.

With the opening, H&M will launch their Australian Summer Collection, which is set to have all the summer holiday essentials down pat. I simply cannot wait!

I read an interesting study that said sleeping on animal skin may reduce a baby’s risk of developing asthma. Scientists believe germs in the hide and fur prime the immune system not to trigger allergies.

The findings come from a study of 2,441 healthy German babies whose progress was monitored until the age of 10.

More than half slept on animal skin during their first three months of life. They were 79 per cent less likely to develop asthma by six years of age than children not exposed to animal skin. The results, presented at the European Respiratory Society’s International Congress in Munich, lend support to the ‘hygiene hypothesis’ that suggests too much cleanliness early in life can increase susceptibility to allergies.

Lead researcher Dr Christina Tischer, said the results supported earlier research.

“Previous studies have suggested that microbes found in rural settings can protect from asthma. An animal skin might also be a reservoir for various kinds of microbes, following similar mechanisms as has been observed in rural environments,” she said.

When it seems like every preschool has lists of what can’t be brought into school due to allergies, this research shows that the human body is an incredible machine that has an extraordinary ability to adapt to anything it experiences.

“A lot of people could identify with the song. Everyone in his or her mind thinks they’re a sexy thing. They think the song is all about them,” said founding member Patrick Olive.

“Nobody wants to be left out, they want to think, ‘yeah, well I’m a sexy thing as well’.”

It’s the combination of that make-youwant-to-dance rhythm and slightly raunchy lyrical content that makes the songs of Hot Chocolate so damn sexy.

“It’s what you call a poetic licence. And I think most songwriters have poetic licence; they can sing about anything at all and get away with it,” Olive said.

“In the song the guy’s saying ‘now you’re lying next to me, giving it to me’, you can sing that and get away with it. If you say that you could get arrested.

“But you sing that and people think,

The group have toured extensively, both locally and internationally and were asked to play at Buckingham Palace for the prewedding reception of Prince Charles and Lady Diana.

Olive has particularly fond memories of the band’s early work during the Disco era of the 70’s where the band spent time with musicians such as Leo Sawyer and Suzi Quatro, as well as bands like Kool & the Gang and Geordie, whose lineup included AC/DC’s current frontman, Brian Johnson.

“They were happy times,” Olive recalled.

“I’d say they’re happy times now but I think they were happier times back in the day, in the 70’s, because people were like free everything – freedom, free expression.

“People weren’t afraid to let themselves go and have a good time but I think [now] everything’s a little bit closed up through political correctness.”

When hearing from fans who have been coming to see Hot Chocolate since a young age, Olive says he couldn’t be happier.

“It’s what we’re in the business for, people to be appreciative of what we have done and what we’re doing, and it’s really, really nice when they do that,” he said.

Hot Chocolate will be performing at the Enmore Theatre on Saturday, October 11.

Formed in the early 80s playing psychedelic punk covers, the Lime Spiders first drew real attention to themselves when they won a 1982 Battle of the Bands competition at the Southern Cross Hotel in Surry Hills, beating off the likes of the Celibate Rifles in the process.

The prize included a record deal, which saw their first EP ‘25th Hour’ released in 1983.

Welcome to a world we only see in the news nner West lefties might be interested in a new Australian play ‘Brother Daniel’, which tells the story of a revolutionary hero who, 25 years after the revolution, is being tortured in jail by his former comrades.

He is visited by a smart, young lawyer who wants to save him but he refuses to collaborate with her either.

Is it a trap? Has he been tortured so long he refuses to trust anyone? Or is he being pragmatic about the consequences of choosing sides?

“You used to say that revolutions are started by farmers and students but, in the end, the professionals run the country,” says the character.

Collaborations Theatre is presenting the world premiere of this tense and confronting play by James Balian.

Director Travis Green says he was drawn to the play’s intriguing exploration of complicated relationships and individual choices.

“I saw the choices that people make to get through life including the

fundamental choice to not simply survive, but to truly exist. “‘Brother Daniel’ has a beautiful and challenging script that explores the ambiguous nature of behaviour and the consequences of decisions

we make. The challenge is bringing these behaviours to life.”

For playwright James Balian, ‘Brother Daniel’ started life as a one act play then moved through several incarnations.

This final version came about after a playreading two years ago where the small, select audience’s feedback was priceless in helping to refocus the story’s spine.

Green says the play explores a world we only hear about in the news and that’s why it’s so interesting.

Green and Balian first worked together on ‘The Dentist’s Visit’ in 2012 and agreed back then that they should work together again.

This challenging, sometimes funny and often moving production brings together a seasoned and talented cast including Vincent Andriano, David Attrill, Adam Hatzimanolis, Jeannie Gee, Errol Henderson, Richard Hilliar, Naomi Livingstone and Mel Dodge.

‘Brother Daniel’ is showing at the Tap Gallery in Darlinghurst from Wednesday, September 24 until Sunday, October 5.

BB has long way to improve Now, before all you haters turn the page or my editor says “Nathan, no more ‘Big Brother’ stories!” Hear me out, please.

I’ve been a fan of the show since the day it premiered on Channel Ten way back in 2001. I’ve sat down and watched every season religiously and even prayed for it to come back when it was axed by Ten in 2008.

Fortunately for me my prayers were answered by Channel Nine and in 2012 ‘Big Brother’ returned better than ever I imagined. I honestly believe last year’s series, which saw Tim Dormer run rampant and eventually win, was one of the best seasons yet.

However this year (I never thought I would say this) I’m struggling with ‘Big Brother’. Don’t get me wrong I still love the show and there’s no way I’ll miss an episode but I think Channel Nine have made few mistakes with it so far.

Firstly, I hate having to wait until 8.40pm every night to watch it. This year the show’s being packaged up with ‘The Block’ and instead of starting at the traditional time of 7pm, viewers have to wait for ‘The Block’ to be over to get their ‘BB’ fix. The new timeslot is also hurting the show’s ratings as people can’t be bothered waiting around to watch it.

My next gripe with ‘BB’ this year is the casting; it’s absolutely terrible. Don’t get me wrong there are some good eggs but many just seem too similar to each other. There’s no one that makes me want to tune in every night to follow and have a laugh at like Tim last year.

Many ‘Big Brother’ fans are also up in arms about the lack of tweeting from the ‘Big Brother’ social media account.

In previous years the social media team posted live updates every hour or so detailing what was happening in the house at that exact time on their Twitter account @BBAULIVE. This year that particular account has seemingly been shut down with no updates on it since November 6 – last year’s finale. Therefore, the only updates fans can get about the housemates is by watching the daily show – meaning there’s going to be plenty of action missed.

And just so you know, the Nominations episode this week was less than impressive also.

udges, reviewers and loyal consumers alike, have long sung the praises of Semillons from Tintilla Estate in the Hunter Valley.

Family owned and operated, the company’s 25-acre vineyard was planted with Semillon and Shiraz in the heart of Pokolbin over 20 years ago, and has not looked back since. In fact the Lusby family are proud that they harvest fruit from their low-yielding vines that give rich and concentrated flavours, and make their wines on the one property.

And while Semillon and Shiraz remain their mainstays, they now produce quite exceptional Sangiovese as well, and a Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay from fruit off a block a couple of kilometres down the road.

But look out for their 2012 Tintilla Angus Hunter Semillon, a lovely un-oaked drop made from handpicked fruit whose lime/lemon flavours blend in well with suggestions of sweeter gooseberry. With its vibrant acidity you can expect this one to do well in the cellar over the coming 10 years. Well recommended to enjoy with all variety of seafoods at $28.

One to note: Another Hunter family we’ve long had time and admiration for are the Sloans at Mistletoe Winery also at Pokolbin. They’ve just released an interesting, low-alcohol bubby they call Sparkling Mozcato – the ‘Z’ in deference to the usual ‘Moscato’ spelling.

This one’s a clean, fresh and sweet drop with a slight fizz and just 5.8 per cent alcohol. It’s good low-alcohol celebration buying at $22.

The Lexus RC F will launch a powerful assault on the luxury performance vehicle segment in early 2015, with the all-new coupe to benefit from a 5.0-litre V8 engine.

t was a bad week for Sydney Olympic, losing the NPL NSW Grand Final to Blacktown City on Sunday and then being knocked out of the FFA Cup by Bentleigh Greens on Tuesday.

The NPL NSW Grand Final at Edensor Park was a nail biter, which went into extra time before Blacktown triumphed 2-1.

The Blacktown Demons opened the scoring in the 26th minute when a shot from Kearyn Baccus deflected off Ryuji Miyazawa, leaving Olympic keeper Paul Henderson with no chance of making the save.

Olympic had a number of chances but were unable to convert any of them until the 79th minute when Christos Tomaras landed a sensational volley in the back of the net.

It was a well-timed goal as at this point the momentum was with Olympic.

The team had two more excellent scoring opportunities when Dimitri Hatzimouratis shot a free kick just wide in the 88th minute; then Tomaras forced a spectacular save from Blacktown keeper Nenad Vekic in the dregs of injury time.

Blacktown prevailed over Olympic in a gritty grand final at Edensor Park.

As soon as the game went into extra time, Blacktown lifted and this spelt the end for Olympic.

In the 92nd minute Sasa Macura delivered a delightful ball to Travis Major who edged it past the diving Henderson for what would prove to be the winning goal.

Olympic wouldn’t give up and poured everything into the next 30 minutes but were unable to take the title off the Demons.

The effort showed two days later when they backed up at Belmore against Victorian NPL team Bentleigh in their FFA Cup Round of 16 match.

Starting the game with leaden legs, Olympic conceded a penalty in the 7th minute, which was duly converted by Liam McCormick.
