L

abor’s Daniel Barbar has been elected to Marrickville Council in last weekend’s West Ward Burraga by-election although the day was marred somewhat by allegations of violence at one of the polling booths. Cr Barbar registered over 50 per cent of the primary vote, a swing to Labor of about five per cent, which came at the expense of the Liberal Party whose vote dropped by about nine per cent to just under 15 per cent. The Greens Party increased their vote slightly to

33 per cent while the Australia First Party recorded just two per cent. Cr Barbar said he was honoured and humbled by the result and attributed it to a strong local campaign. “We actually got out there and spoke to people. I think it is a ringing endorsement of what Labor has been doing on council,” he said. “You look at the last 12 months where we had Jo Haylen as our Labor mayor, getting back to the basics, trying to get more money to improve community infrastructure, improving the quality of life of residents. This is not rocket science. People expect a certain level of service delivery.”

He said he would have to hit the ground running with his inaugural Council meeting next Tuesday. Polling day was marred last Saturday by allegations that two people handing out for the Australia First Party at Marrickville West Public School were assaulted by a gang of five or six people. Cr Barbar deplored the violence. “In this country, you are entitled to your views no matter how extreme they may seem and it is up to me a as a Labor representative to put forward Labor’s case and persuade people that way,” he said. “Victimising extremists does not do the community any good, in fact it does long term harm.”
