Getting the balance right Victoria Road Precinct Planning Proposal to return to Council for review CHRIS CONNOLLY

he proposal to rezone an area of land around Victoria Road which Marrickville Council referred to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment has been returned to Council by the Department. The proposal would have seen the 18 hectare area of mostly industrial land rezoned to allow residential development. Acting project manager for the Victoria Road Precinct Planning Proposal Sean Macken said the Department was now seeking to hold a workshop with local landowners and the Council to work through the details of the proposal. “The Victoria Road Precinct is an exciting proposal involving the regeneration of a key part of the Marrickville area,” Mr Macken said. “It’s a complex proposal and it’s important that we get the balance right. We’re keen to work through the issues with Council and the Department so we can then proceed to the next stage.” He said the proposal has a broad vision for the area including open space, commercial and creative arts space, and affordable housing. Marrickville Greens Councillor Max Phillips welcomed the news that the proposal would be returning to Council. “It was no surprise that the Victoria Road precinct failed to pass through the Department of Planning’s gateway process given it was badly flawed and more of an ambit claim for developers

The Victoria Road Precinct Planning Proposal was lodged by Danias Holdings dreaming of mountains of profit,” Cr Phillips said. “It’s vital that Marrickville Council now re-assert its role as the planning authority and representative of the broader community interest, by commencing its own planning review of the Victoria Road precinct. He said a recent Employment Lands Study found that the precinct was an important part of Sydney’s position as a global city and generates considerable employment. “It concluded that the precinct’s location close to

the CBD, airport and sea port, made it incredibly strategic land for industry in Sydney,” Cr Phillips said. Independent Councillor Victor Macri was critical of the Employment Lands Study saying the assumptions underpinning it are wrong and it will come under the microscope when discussed at Council next month. “The study says it should be a logistics hub. That’s not a good outcome for the people of Marrickville,” Cr Macri said.
