Petersham man is appealing for the return of a clasp of war medals belonging to his father, stolen from a unit in Coronation Avenue some time between last Wednesday, October 15 and this Monday, October 20.

Glen Cassidy said the medals were of no value to anyone else.

“The only value they have is to me and my immediate family. They’re something I’d truly love to keep in the family for generations,” he said.

He said his father, Major Albert Peter Cassidy, was in the army for around 25 years.

“He served in New Guinea in the Second World War, then the Malayan Emergency, then a tour of duty in Vietnam. His final couple of postings were as second in command of the SAS in Perth,” he added.

The stolen medals included the Pacific Star Medal, the Australian Service Medal and the War Medal, all from World War II, as well as the General Service Medal from 1962, the Vietnam Medal and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal. Mr Cassidy said it was a big shock when he discovered they were gone.

“When I looked around the apartment I could see it had been ransacked,” he said.

“I went from room to room, gradually dawning on me that more and more things had been disturbed. I think it was only when the police arrived I thought to look in the drawer where I knew the medals were.”

Police are urging anyone with information about the whereabouts of the medals to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Gough had flaws but he had a real vision for this country

Much has been written this week of the life, legacy and loquacity of former prime minister Gough Whitlam who died on Tuesday aged 98.

I am eternally grateful to him for a few things.

I was one of the last of the generation that got a free university education as a consequence of his policy. Some political commentators who went out of their way to pour scorn on Mr Whitlam this week described policies such as this and free health care as creating a “culture of entitlement”.

I tend to think the culture of entitlement exists in the minds of those who would rather restrict university to the wealthy.

I am also grateful he chose to have a conversation with me once. I didn’t thank him for the free education, largely because I didn’t get a word in edgeways as he poured forth on the 2004 federal election campaign, if memory serves me correctly, and the prospects of then Labor leader Mark Latham, who had been quite close to Mr Whitlam. He was still very astute and on top of the issues of the day despite being in his late 80s.

For those few minutes, I was transported into his world and saw first hand the effect he had on those around him.

The third reason I’m grateful is he inspired me to think about politics. In 1973, he decided that Sydney needed a second airport and it would be built in the suburb we lived in at the time, Galston.

As a young child, I adopted the prevailing view in our community that he was the Anti-Christ and few in the area mourned his dismissal in 1975. As I grew older and started learning more about the Whitlam years, I realised there was a lot of good he did in those few years and, by judging him on one issue I disagreed with at the time, I was doing him a disservice. That in turn forced me to think more deeply about issues, to weigh up the pros and cons, and to think of the greater good.

I was pleased to hear the majority of people, including his political enemies speaking positively about Mr Whitlam.

If you look at Gough Whitlam’s great reforms – access to education being opened up, recognition of China, engagement of our lives in the full cultural activities, and removal of discrimination against women and on the basis of race through the Racial Discrimination Act – all of these measures have stood the test of time.

“All of them were very controversial at that time. Gough Whitlam leaves a great legacy to the nation. He taught us to be brave – brave about our reform ambitions, brave in the face of our critics and unstintingly brave in the pursuit of the greatest ambition any of us could ever pursue: justice and opportunity for all.”

Current Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, “Whitlam represented more than a new politics; he represented a new way of thinking about government, about our region, about our place in the world and about change itself.”

He was joined by former prime ministers Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and John Howard who all chose to reflect on the good things he did, how charming he was in person, and what a loss his passing will be to this country.

Thinking back to 1975, it would have been hard to imagine such union of feeling. The dismissal of the Whitlam Government caused such division that it seemed impossible that the political enemies of the time would ever be reconciled, just as it is hard these days to imagine broad praise for more recent prime ministers such as John Howard, Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard or Tony Abbott.

It is easy to dwell on the negatives but important to put into perspective that people who make it to positions of power have difficult decisions to make and, for the most part, make those decisions with good intentions for the future of this country. I certainly believe that to be true of Gough Whitlam. He had flaws and he made mistakes. But he had a vision for making this country a better place and he did his darndest to make it happen. his Sunday, October 26 marks Graffiti Removal Day and this year residents are being urged to help clean up 14 graffiti hot spots in the Marrickville local government area.

The state-wide graffiti removal and prevention day is a joint initiative between the New South Wales Government and Rotary Down Under and is supported by Marrickville Council, which helps fund good quality street art as well as removing illegal graffiti or tagging.

In 2013-14, Council removed 9,496 square metres of graffiti from parks and 13,386 square metres of graffiti from streets, at a cost of $284,000.

“Addressing graffiti is a really important issue for our community,” said Marrickville Mayor Mark Gardiner.

“One of the most effective forms of graffiti management is rapid removal.

That’s why we support this national day of action, and why we have our own ‘graffiti-busting’ truck. But we also realise that simply creating blank canvasses for would-be taggers can also be problematic.”

Mayor Gardiner said Council approaches this problem in a range of creative ways.

“We host the very popular Graffiti Proofing Your Property workshops that teach urban design techniques that reduce opportunistic vandalism, and we have education programs like Live To Create, which show kids that there are ways to artistically express themselves that do not involve breaking the law or putting themselves in harm’s way,” he said.

“And I’m particularly proud of the success of our recent Perfect Match program. Not one of these fantastic examples of street art and murals has been tagged.”

The nominated graffiti removal sites in Newtown include two places on Station Street, three along King Street, one at 92 Chelmsford Street, and one at Norton Russell Reserve on the corner of Bedford Street and Albert Street.

In Stanmore and Petersham, there are sites in Trafalgar Street, Douglas Street, Stanmore Road and West Street. There are two sites in Chapel Street, Marrickville near Marrickville Public School and one at 21 Barnsbury Grove in Dulwich Hill.

Rotary will be responsible for the organisation, management, training and insurance of all volunteers. They will appoint a trained coordinator for the Marrickville local government area, and one supervisor for each cleanup site. To volunteer, go to www.graffitiremovalday.org.au.

Greens NSW MP and Sexuality and Gender Identity Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, welcomed the passing of the Criminal Records Amendment (Historical Homosexual Offences) Bill 2014 yesterday (Thursday, October 23). The bill amends the Criminal Records Act to enable certain convictions for various decriminalised homosexual sexual conduct offences to become extinguished.

ocal rock/jazz/hip hop group Colour Cage won The Break competition held as part of last weekend’s Marrickville Festival.

Designed to give local musicians a chance to attract industry recognition, the competition is judged by music industry promoters and managers like Nathan Farrell (NFE) and Briese Abbott (Spark & Opus). Prizes include a recording session with Zen Recording Studios and the chance to play the main stage at Marrickville Council’s Australia Day celebrations next year.

Generously, the group donated the recording session to fellow competitors, the Marrickville High School Hip Hop Band.

“They were awesome, great singers. We started playing together at high school too and would have really appreciated the introduction to recording in a studio for the first time back then,” band member Nathaniel ‘Phan’ Sjarif said.

“We are definitely still keen to play on the Main Stage at the Australia Day Festival though,” said fellow member Ben Dupree.

They said they were a bit further along in the recording process, and knew how

hard it can be first starting out. Colour Cage have spent much of this year recording new songs and recently released their debut single ‘Will I’.

The band features Karl ‘Aquaviva’ Fernandez on guitar and vocals, Dupree on bass and backing vocals, and Sjarif on drums as well as being recording engineer and producer.

Dupree said events like the Marrickville Festival offer an important opportunity for local bands to perform for large, live audiences.

“Festivals like Marrickville Festival are really important to support unsigned bands like us,” he said.

“Marrickville has a really up-and-coming music scene. There are lots of cool places popping up, like Lazy Bones, and it’s quite a happening little area.”

However, he expressed concern that with the NSW Government’s lockout laws it was getting harder and harder to find opportunities to play live music in Sydney.

“So the more opportunities like Marrickville Festival we have in the inner west, the better,” Dupree said.

“We’re really happy. We’re pretty grateful we got the opportunity to be a part of a competition like The Break.”

This year’s Marrickville Festival drew crowds of more than 55,000 making it the biggest one ever.

Peace park plans progress Richardson’s Lookout has become integral to local peace movements

ichardson’s Lookout in South Marrickville is set to become a Peace and Reconciliation Park in April next year to coincide with the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.

The proposal, which is subject to community consultation, will see the park renamed Richardson’s Lookout Peace and Reconciliation Park with up to three new interpretive signs for the park.

Former mayor Jo Haylen took the idea to the Council’s July meeting where it was proposed that Council initiate discussions with relevant groups regarding the proposed change.

At this month’s Community and Corporate Services committee meeting, it was resolved that consultation and development of the proposal be incorporated into Council’s Cooks River Plan of Management and, provided there was majority support for the idea, the renaming process would take place in April 2015.

“It’s totally appropriate because of the site’s amazing story. From its use by the local Cadigal people, to its association with the most famous of Marrickville’s estates, The Warren, to its various connec-

Richardson’s Lookout is both the name

of the small park in Holt Crescent and the lookout, a natural rock outcrop with fine views of the Cooks River.

The site is said to have been a significant vantage point for the local Aboriginal people. Following European settlement, it was granted to ship builder Thomas Moore in 1799.

In 1859, it became part of wealthy businessman Thomas Holt’s parcel of land, which he called The Warren. His mansion, built around 1866, was later used as a convent and then an artillery encampment during World War I before being demolished in 1919 to build a housing estate for returned soldiers.

The park and lookout was established at the same time and features two towers from the mansion. Originally known simply as Lookout Reserve, it was renamed Richardson’s Lookout in 1936 in honour of a Marrickville alderman who led a campaign to turn the rubbish dump and mosquito breeding ground into a park.

In recent years, the lookout has become a significant place for local residents conducting marches or gatherings related to peace or reconciliation.

The Gallipoli Centenary Peace Campaign welcomed Council’s decision saying the timing of the renaming was something it had been campaigning for over a long period.

Police snapshot Dulwich Hill woman hit by truck in Earlwood

Broken beer bottle used in two related robberies

Police from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses after a man and woman were hit by a truck in Earlwood last week.

About 7pm on Thursday, October 16, a 51-year-old Dulwich Hill woman and a 46-year-old Earlwood man were walking on Bayview Street, Earlwood.

At the same time a Volvo tipper truck carrying an excavator machine, travelling west on Bayview Street, negotiated a bend in the road and the rail tailgate of the tipper truck has collided with the two pedestrians.

The driver of the tipper, a 42-year-old Greenacre man immediately stopped to assist the pedestrians.

The pedestrians were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.

A man has been charged over two armed robberies in Sydney’s inner city this month.

Just after 4.30pm on Sunday, October 12, a man entered a bottle shop on Abercrombie Street at Chippendale allegedly armed with a broken beer bottle.

It’s alleged the man approached and threatened the attendant, demanding money before fleeing with cash and alcohol.

In the second incident, about 6.30pm, a man hailed a taxi on Regent Street at Chippendale. After arriving at High Holborn Street in Surry Hills the man allegedly threatened the driver with a broken bottle before stealing money from his wallet.

Police allege the incidents are linked. A 35-year-old man was arrested at a shopping centre on Pitt Street on October 18 and has since been charged.

Teen charged over alleged indecent assault in Newtown

Drug affected man threatened child with a knife

A teenager has been charged over the alleged indecent assault of a woman at Newtown. About 2pm on Thursday, October 16, a 23-year-old woman was walking towards her car parked in Leamington Lane.

It’s alleged a 16-year-old boy approached her from behind and held her by the neck while indecently assaulting her.

She screamed out and the boy ran away.

The woman was not physically injured in the incident. As a result of police inquiries, about 2.30pm on October 17, officers arrested a 16-year-old boy in Eveleigh. He was charged with indecent assault.

About 9pm on Monday, October 20 a 31-year-old man attended a residential unit on Pitt Street, Waterloo to visit a friend.

He was invited into the unit, however once inside the man displayed erratic behaviour towards the 26-year-old male occupant who became concerned due to children being present. The occupant asked his friend to leave. The man, who was now holding a knife, allegedly became more agitated and when in the courtyard of the complex he grabbed the occupant’s 8-year-old son.

The man pulled his son free but the man was injured. The visitor has been charged.

Picnic fosters community spirit Inaugural event saw people from all walks of life come together

he Friends of Erskineville hosted their inaugural community picnic last weekend and attracted a large number of people throughout the day.

Friends of Erskineville president Darren Jenkins said he was very pleased with how it went.

“Local businesses reported that their business was up significantly, with the local Bakerman cafe brewing over 200 more coffees than usual,” Mr Jenkins said.

“The local history walk that was put on by the Erskineville branch of the Labor Party attracted over 100 people.”

He said the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney Robyn Kemmis turned up as did both of the candidates for the new state seat of Newtown, Penny Sharpe and Jenny Leong.

Mr Jenkins said it was particularly heartening to see friends and neighbours who attended the Erskineville Mosque having fun side by side with friends and neighbours who attend the local Anglican Church.

“It was really interesting to speak with the representatives from the local mosque.

to try to keep a low profile in the community so as to not attract any unwanted attention,” he said.

“But, they were overjoyed to receive the invitation to the picnic and to take part in the day as everyone had been so friendly.”

Activities and fun included face painting, a jumping castle, book stall, oversized chess set, hula hoops and a community chalkboard.

Mr Jenkins said the Friends of Erskineville were already looking forward to how they can make the event even better next year.

“The Friends of Erskineville’s goals this year were to fight for better services in our area, to speak up for the vulnerable in our community, and to bring people together,” he said.

Mr Jenkins was pleased that the picnic was part of the Shop Local food movement where many local businesses offered to top-up picnic baskets with free giveaways.

“The village shops are such an essential part of Erskineville’s identity and it’s just terrific the way they support the community and the community supports them right back,” Mr Jenkins said.

“I think it speaks volumes about the strong underlying community spirit in Erskineville that at the picnic we saw people from varied backgrounds sitting down and sharing something to eat.”

ortgage Choice Newtown recently hosted a Dine at Mine fundraising event for Camp Quality and in the process raised over $8,300 – more than any other corporate fundraiser for the event across the country.

The idea behind Dine at Mine is for people or businesses host a dinner event and ask the attendees to donate to Camp Quality what they would have spent on a night out.

Mortgage Choice Newtown owner Suzanne Taylor has been involved in Camp Quality for over 20 years and says combining charity with her business contacts contributed to the successful evening.

“My business partner Owun suggested we do Dine at Mine. We didn’t think it would be as big as it turned out to be,” Ms Taylor said.

“Everyone had a great night. We had a Spanish theme with a flamenco dancer and music and paella.”

She said local businesses such as Pisco Sour, Samuel Smith & Son, Young Henrys and Gelatomassi supplied all the food and drink for the night. They also had

three speakers talking about overcoming adversity including Dr Tony Hayek from Blue Wealth, flamenco dancer Jessica Statham, and Julian from Julian’s Plumbing Service.

“We got just short of 40 people here but there was a good combination of people and we know some of our business partners have fairly deep pockets,” she said.

“Our auction raised about $4,000. The rest were pledges. We also went out to a lot more of our network who couldn’t make it and they were completely generous. It was just amazing.”

Ms Taylor said her mother passed away of bowel cancer during her final year of school so when she started working for a company that was doing some charity work for Camp Quality, she was keen to get involved herself as a volunteer.

“I did my first camp in 1992. You have a camper assigned to you. You go away for three days,” she said.

“You get so much from the kids. At the end of the day, the kids are kids and they just love it. It’s a chance for them to be away from their family and not think about treatment and just have fun.”

She says her involvement with the charity is valuable both personally and from a business point of view because their clients realise there is more to them than just the business.

he NSW Government is increasing its licence fees on before and after school hours care services based at public schools in the local area.

According to figures provided by the Department of Education and Communities to Marrickville Council, the licence fee at Stanmore Public School is being increased from $1 to $12,900 per year. At Wilkins Public School/Globe Preschool, the fee will increase from $1 to $11,040.

Camdenville, Ferncourt and Marrickville West Public Schools are also set to pay fee increases in the order of $2,000 to $6,000.

The before and after school hours care services at these schools are operated

by Marrickville Council and Council resolved last week to write to the Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli requesting a return to the current fee structure.

Shadow Education spokesperson Ryan Park estimated the fee increases at Stanmore Public School will lead to fee increases for parents of around $3 per day or between $500 and $750 extra a year.

“There is no justification for a $3 a day fee increase – something which adds up over the course of the year,” Mr Park said.

“Already we are seeing parents having

to remove their children from after school care in parts of Sydney.”

He said, adding even further to the cost, all centres operating during the school holidays will have to pay for their own school cleaning, adding an additional $4,691 to the balance sheets of Camdenville, Ferncourt and Stanmore Public Schools.

“After school care needs to be affordable in this city because there are so many parents doing it tough and juggling one, two or three jobs at all hours of the day,” he said.

A Department of Education spokesperson said the licences with Outside School Hours Care providers are being standardised using a formal tender process for commercial operations and a standard formula for not-for-profit services.

“The Department is currently working with Stanmore Public School, and the existing provider, Marrickville Council, which is a not-for-profit service provider, to formalise a licence agreement,” the spokesperson said.

“The calculated fee of around $16,000 to $17,000, for the new licence agreement is based on the Department’s standard formula and the average number of children attending the service, 75 in the morning... 120 in the afternoon and 60 for vacation care.”

Students join in Big Breakfast Anti-Poverty week and Foodbank event highlights the hidden problem of poverty

oodbank held its annual Big Breakfast last Thursday at Martin Place to highlight the plight of the 2 million Australians who go hungry each year, a quarter of them children. Joining them at the event were NSW Premier Mike Baird and students from St Mary’s Primary School in Erskineville.

School Principal Frank Wassef said 30 Kindergarten and Year 1 students from the school attended and it was disturbing to learn that, in NSW, an average of 90,000 people, almost half of them children, are turned away each month because of not enough food and resources.

“No child should have to worry about where their next meal will come from, yet a shocking number are in this position every year,” Mr Wassef said.

“This event goes a long way in providing a more just and equitable society, and we are glad to be involved. By having our students attend and being fed breakfast, we are supporting Foodbank NSW in communicating that no child in Australia should go hungry, especially in a nation like ours where there is so much wealth and resources. This activity is one way we

are putting our Catholic values of justice, mercy and compassion into action.”

The event was held to coincide with Anti-Poverty week and the release of the annual Foodbank Hunger Report. Now in its third year, the Hunger report provides an overview of the hidden problem of poverty in Australia.

Foodbank NSW/ACT CEO Gerry Andersen said that this year’s report revealed alarming statistics: 516,000 Australians rely on Foodbank’s food relief each month, increasing a staggering eight per cent since last year.

“Too many Australians are simply struggling to put food on the table because of low income or unexpected expenses,” Mr Andersen said.

“To cope with this increasing demand we are building a new distribution centre in western Sydney that will allow us to rescue up to 12 million more kilograms of food each year.”

He also thanked Premier Baird for the NSW Government’s $2 million contribution towards their new centre.

The St Mary’s students were told that for just 40 cents, Foodbank is able to provide a child with a healthy, nutritious breakfast.

Last year in NSW, Foodbank provided the equivalent of 17,708,340 meals – an average of 48,516 a day.

It is so easy to forget that makeup, just like clothing, goes in and out of fashion. When you get into a routine and when you find products that work perfectly for you, it can be difficult to break away and try something new. But a new season calls for change and if there is any season that is worth making a change for, it is this one.

Throughout autumn and winter this year, full-bodied foundations in pale colours, dark lipsticks, smokey eyes and contoured cheekbones were favoured in the evenings. Daytime makeup was all about creating a dewy look – remember the influx of highlighters and illuminators we saw hitting the shelves in the makeup aisle?

Full-bodied foundations look great and give the impression of the smoothest of complexions but they are so impractical for summer.

Have you ever heard someone say, “her face looks like it is melting”? This is the comment people will be making about you if you pack on the foundation in the hotter months due to sweat and rubbing.

Swap the foundation for something with a light coverage – this can be a tinted moisturiser, alphabet cream (think cc or bb) or even a liquid foundation with light coverage – and use a little bit of concealer on any blemishes or dark areas.

Now we can’t go through the season without adding some colour to our cheeks and although reaching for that shimmery bronzer is so easy, this season is about the matte look so put away those shimmers. Napoleon Perdis Matte Bronze is the perfect product for this.

Your brows should of course be filled in with a pencil or powder but keep them looking soft.

With such a basic, clean look for the summer it is so important to give your look a little oomph with some lip colour. Tints are very popular this season but I will be wearing Napoleon Perdis Mattetastic.

While it’s all sunshine that you are expecting a gorgeous baby, sometimes it’s hard to see the special side of things when you are constantly peeing, you have permanent reflux and you are starving.

The reality is growing a child is hard work. It’s hard to maintain your intentions to be healthy and active when you are pregnant, when you feel sick, tired and craving all sorts of foods! I know this because I’m 26 weeks pregnant with my third child. It has taken me two pregnancies to realise the most important thing is to listen to your body.

I don’t mean that little voice that says “EAT McDONALDS”!

I mean listen to your body’s energy. When you feel good, then eat right and be active.

But on those days when you feel sick and really lethargic, rest and eat those foods you are craving, but in moderation.

My first two pregnancies were learning curves for me. I wasn’t active at all with my first and I ate for four... every meal!

With my second I ate a bit better and tried to walk often.

It’s been 4.5 years since my last pregnancy so I have had a bit of time to make some major diet and lifestyle changes.

I have been CrossFitting for about 2.5 years and I now try to maintain a natural diet of pasture fed meats, fruit and veg, nuts and seeds, a little full fat dairy and I have removed wheat and processed foods.

I am still CrossFitting but I am definitely not training to the same intensity as 6 months ago. I am trying to maintain some fitness and to eat foods that will benefit me and my growing baby. At the end of the day, every woman and every pregnancy is totally different. My point is, don’t be too hard on yourself during pregnancy and do what feels right.

Tall tales or harsh truth and reality? ith ASIO’s powers being expanded like never before and the threat of terrorism on the very streets we walk down, there’s only one man to turn to for answers, Special Agent David ‘Frosty’ Callan and his one man show ‘I Spied’.

Callan has an insight born of seven years working for an organisation not too dissimilar to the subject of his show but, not wishing to spend the rest of his life in the big house asking Bubba to pass him the soap, it’s probably safest not to identify him as an ex-ASIO officer.

Ten years ago he took ‘I Spied’ to the Adelaide Fringe Festival and, in the process, caused the email systems of security agencies around the world to crash.

Since then he has been touring the show nationally and internationally, unpicking the tangled web of deceit and secrets to reveal the true workings of the modern spy agency.

In the past 10 years a lot has happened in the world of intelligence and security.

Edward Snowden perpetrated the biggest

pirate download in history. Julian Assange took such a massive Wikileak all over US intelligence that he is forced to live in an Ecuadorian toilet. And Australian intelligence was caught in Indonesia doing exactly what it was meant to be doing.

With all new tales of daring-do and daring-don’t, Callan lays bare the workings of the seedy underbelly of international espionage and shows that, while you may think you need to know, you probably don’t want to.

He has taken his show to security conferences lit by a single incandescent bulb, remote tracking stations, the No Man’s Land on an undisclosed peninsula, and a bridge in Eastern Europe where two audiences lined up on either side.

As one reviewer said, “It’s a background many comedians would kill for – and who knows, perhaps he did.”

He has also turned his hand to acting in that time where he was most recently seen as a policeman on ‘Rake’ and as a security officer in ‘At Home With Julia’.

Double Header a crowd pleaser coustic duo Turner & Simmons are launching their debut CD ‘Double Header’ tonight at the Marrickville Bowling Club.

The pair will be familiar to many from their monthly residency at the Gladstone Hotel in Dulwich Hill and will be known to many more from their time in bands such as Rose Tattoo, Ol’55 and Buffalo.

The album, which combines blues, country and rock, has already got a bit of airplay on blues programs which saw it debut in the Australian blues charts last month.

Born in London, Chris Turner began playing in bands in 1961. He moved to New Zealand in the late sixties and after a stint with ‘The Action’ touring the Philippines and Vietnam in 1970 doing three shows a day, seven days a week, he settled in Australia where he formed his own band.

After recording a solo single ‘I’m Crazy’ in 1982, he continued to play and record with a number of other groups such as Scattered Aces and the Party Boys while continuing to tour with his own band.

Industry experience saw him start producing other acts like Lucy De Soto, Stacey Morris and Will Scarlett as well as founding the College of Contemporary Guitar in Sydney.

Turner sums up his more than 50-year career saying he has played to 160,000 people as well as an empty room. He says he has backed strippers and stood naked himself in front of 500 women. He also claims to have been shot at while flying to a gig, played on through a missile attack and been beaten up after three encores... as well as being signed to Elvis’s record label, playing in the loudest band in the world and escaping from jail twice.

Phill Simmons has also had many years of experience in rock and middle of the road bands and duos. He has worked as a cabaret artist and compere and his repertoire ranges from the classic jazz songs of Cole Porter to the latest top 10 tunes.

Turner & Simmons play the Marrickville Bowling Club tonight, October 24 at 8pm.

andwick Petersham and Sydney Uni cricket clubs have both made the finals of the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup after wins over the weekend.

Playing in the Sydney Sixers conference, the Randy Petes recorded victories over St George and Sutherland to finish second (and undefeated) in the preliminary rounds of the competition.

In the first game, St George won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting wicket.

Medium pacers Nick Stapleton and Adam Semple took two wickets each while three runouts were effected by the field resulting in St George being dismissed for 103.

That total never seemed enough although after the fall of two quick wickets, Randwick Petersham momentarily were struggling at 2 for 10. However, skipper Adam Semple with an unbeaten 66 supported by Ryan Higgins (31) and Jake Scicluna (13) helped them overhaul the St George total in the second last over.

In the second game, Sutherland won the toss and elected to bat but once again the Randwick Petersham bowlers and fielders were on song

Semple continued his good form from earlier in the day as he and fellow opener Nathan Price put on 51 before Price was dismissed for 29. Semple finished with 57 not out as the Randy Petes reached their target in the 15th over with the loss of just two wickets.

Sydney University finished top of the Sydney Thunder conference after recording victories over Hawkesbury and Campbelltown-Camden last Sunday.

In the first game, they made 7 for 144 thanks largely to 63 from Scott Henry and 48 from Nick Larkin. Liam Robertson with 3 for 15 was the pick of the bowlers as Hawkesbury were dismissed for 119 in reply.

In the second game, the Ghosts looked to have made a competitive 7 for 140 with William Somerville (4-39) the pick of the Students’ bowlers. However, Sydney Uni’s top order was again solid reaching 2 for 144 in the 18th over.

In the semi finals next week, Sydney Uni will play Fairfield-Liverpool while Randwick Petersham will play Eastern Suburbs.
