NZAC Day is not only still a significant day for Australians but becoming more significant according to Lloyd Birdsall and Ken McIntyre from Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL sub-branch. Mr Birdsall who is a past president of the subbranch said he was impressed with the number of people from non-English speaking backgrounds who attend ANZAC Day events. As someone who spent time on the Kokoda Track fighting the Japanese in World War II, Mr Birdsall thinks it’s good that ANZAC Day is relevant to all Australians regardless of background. “I turned 18 in January 1942, just a month after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour,” he said. “Two weeks later I found myself in the army. They needed everyone they could get because most of our troops were in the Middle East.” As an apprentice electrician, they made him a signalman and by July 1942 he was in Port Moresby as part of an artillery unit in the 14th Field Regiment. Mr McIntyre is secretary of the sub-branch and says he has noticed a lot more of the younger generation getting behind ANZAC Day. “All the schools in the area want someone from the sub-branch to go out and talk to the students about ANZAC Day,” Mr McIntyre said. He spent 20 years in the navy, starting as a 16-year-old junior recruit. He was on HMAS Derwent’s first tour of duty when it went to the Malaysian-Indonesian confrontation in 1964.
