arrickville Council has voted to seek accreditation as a Fair Trade Council after being approached by the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand.

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said the area already has plenty of business outlets stocking fair trade products to meet one of the requirements – one trader per 5,000 of population.

“That’s a reflection of how strongly our local community already feels about fair trade. It really is self-evident that this is something that Council should adopt,” Mayor Haylen said.

“I’m excited that Marrickville can help farmers and producers build better futures for themselves, and improve working conditions around the world. Fair Trade is already benefiting more than six million people – farmers, producers, workers and their families – in 70 countries. I’d like to think that Marrickville can help boost those numbers even more.”

The Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand is part of the global fair trade movement, which places fairness in prices and wages, capacity to compete, and the alleviation of poverty at the core of international trade practices.

The organisation focuses in particular on exports from developing countries, including handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, wine, fruit and chocolate.

The casualties of global politics are innocent civilians The quote “in war, truth is the first casualty” was attributed to the Greek playwright Aeschylus two and a half thousand years ago. It seems to be just as true today as it was then.

Following the tragic crash of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 last week, the Ukraine Government was quick to provide evidence pointing the finger at Russia. They supplied transcripts of a series of intercepted phone conversations where Russian separatists appeared to discuss the planning of an attack with a Buk missile launcher, claim responsibility for having shot down a plane, then express horror at having shot down a civilian plane.

They were supported by American spy photos, which showed a missile was launched from the rebel-held area at around the time the plane was shot down.

However, Russia’s response was to blame Ukraine. Military official Lieutenant General Andrei Kartopolov told reporters that Ukraine had three to four divisions of Buk missile launchers near Donetsk and since the rebels didn’t have an air force, it must have been used to attack the Malaysian plane.

Then to confuse matters, Lieutenant General Kartopolov said they had also detected a Ukrainian fighter jet in the vicinity of MH17 and hinted that it might also have shot the plane down.

Obviously, there needs to be a formal investigation and it is too early to say definitively what happened to the flight, but to hear spin being applied to tragedies such as this really sticks in the craw.

trying to argue a point and you automatically take it with a grain of salt.

But these situations are a time to step back and be a bit more statesman-like so it was pleasing to see Australian political leaders of all colours leave the point-scoring alone on this issue.

Meanwhile, in Gaza, Israeli Defence Force attacks on Hamas, code-named Operation Protective Edge, have seen more than 500 Palestinians killed in the past couple of weeks, the majority of them civilians.

I heard the Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni being interviewed on radio earlier this week. Ms Livni is considered to be one of the more moderate members of the Netanyahu Government and she said she wasn’t happy seeing innocent civilians killed by Israeli rocket attacks but she quickly reverted to official government spin when pushed.

“I’m not comfortable when I see these pictures.

But we call these people to leave, we call them, we text them to leave these places. We said to them that we have a military operation going on,” Ms Livni said.

“Hamas called them to stay! So basically, Hamas asked them to stay there and they are being taken hostage by Hamas. It’s not our intention but this is the way wars are.”

It’s a stretch to argue that because you told somebody to move, you can’t be held responsible if they die as a result of your actions.

And again, it is the spin being applied to innocent deaths that is most offensive.

I don’t have a solution for peace in the Middle East but I do know that blaming people for their own deaths won’t be viewed as a peace offering.

New vehicles for light rail Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian this week announced three brand new light rail vehicles would enter service for the first time this week, with more than 1.5 million trips now taken on Sydney’s expanded Inner West Light Rail network.

Light Rail Line. Ms Berejiklian said the first of the new Spanish Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles vehicles rolled out yesterday (July 24) for customers, with another two to follow today and Saturday.

“These brand new vehicles represent a new era for light rail in Sydney,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The new vehicles have more stand-

ing room, accessible seating, low floors, more hand rails and wider aisles for prams and wheelchairs.

“Since opening, more than 200,000 extra trips have been made on the light rail network, totalling 1.5 million customer trips.

“This is an increase of more than 15 per cent compared to the same period last year,” she said.

Robert Roberts, Deputy Chair of The Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand said they were delighted that Marrickville will embark on becoming a Fair Trade Council.

“Fair Trade is about fair terms of trade for farmers, artisans, and workers in the developing world, supporting better prices, decent working conditions and local sustainability,” Mr Roberts said.

“Marrickville Council’s unanimous endorsement of becoming a Fair Trade Council shows its commitment to these principles and will contribute to the commendable efforts of over 1,000 other Fair Trade Councils world-wide.”

There are currently eleven Fair Trade Towns/Councils in Australia and New Zealand including Leichhardt and Manly.

“We are perfectly placed to be a fair trade community, not just through Council practices, but also through Marrickville Manufacturing Association, Marrickville Chamber of Commerce, Newtown Precinct Business Association and individual businesses such as Bourke Street Bakery,” Mayor Haylen said.

In order to receive recognition as a Fair Trade Community, Council must meet a number of minimum requirements, such as serving Fair Trade tea and coffee, and convening a Fair Trade Steering Group.

A

car running into a power pole on Illawarra Road last Friday caused part of the road to be blocked for most of the morning, creating bus diversions and local blackouts.

The accident occurred near the intersection of Illawarra Road and Byrnes Street outside the new Revolution apartment complex being built on the old Marrickville RSL site next to the station.

The impact of the accident was sufficient to fracture the pole, meaning Ausgrid was called out to replace it as soon as possible.

An Ausgrid spokesperson said they were called to the site just after 7am.

After securing the site, they switched off power to nearby properties so the broken pole could be removed and replaced.

Illawarra Road was closed between Arthur Street and Petersham Road, forcing the 423, L23 and some school bus services to run to an amended route via Wharf Street, Beauchamp Road and Livingstone Road.

By early afternoon, power was able to be restored, the roads reopened and bus diversions removed.

With Lifeline’s Stress Down Day being held today (Friday, July 25), the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is reminding people how important pets are in keeping us healthy and happy.

AVA spokesperson Dr David Neck said that pets provide the perfect de-stress solution.

“Research has shown that people who own pets are happier and feel more like a part of the community,” he said.

“Pets provide a perfect topic of conversation with friends, neighbours and other pet lovers.”

But owning a pet has a range of other benefits, too.

“Other research suggests people with pets are healthier,” he said.

They seized clothing, graffiti materials, computer hard drives and a set of knuckledusters.

Following the search warrant, about 1.30pm on Monday officers arrested a 21-year-old man at Central Railway Station.

It will be alleged between Thursday, March 13 and Tuesday, July 15, the man was responsible for graffiti and damage to trains in seven separate incidents.

He was charged with three counts of destroying and damaging property, possessing a prohibited weapon, trespassing and six counts of entering land with the intent to commit an indictable offence. The Dulwich Hill man will face court on August 13.

More signatures required Opposition’s petition will force Government to debate changes to services CHRIS CONNOLLY

SW Opposition Leader John Robertson says he almost has the 10,000 signatures needed to force the Baird Government to debate its ‘Going Home, Staying Home’ reforms in Parliament.

Under the reforms, more than 80 specialist providers of homelessness services have not had their funding renewed, with the funding mostly being redirected to generalist services.

“Time and again, the Liberals have shown that they simply don’t care about the most vulnerable in our society – and these cruel reforms are another shocking example,” Mr Robertson said.

He said, on average, one woman dies every day in NSW as a result of domestic violence.

“For decades, specialist refuges have been providing important services and support to people in times of need – from women and children fleeing domestic violence, to people with mental health and addiction issues facing homelessness,” Mr Robertson said.

“Now many are closing their doors, not just here in the inner city, but right across the state. Everyone agrees that these

specialist providers complement the work of the larger, generalist homelessness services, so these senseless reforms are simply unnecessary.”

One of the services having its funding cut is the Lillian Howell Project in Erskineville, which provides medium to long term supported housing for young women aged between 14 and 18.

Its manager Vivian Stavis said many of the women and girls they support are survivors of child sexual abuse, neglect or family violence.

“We help these girls finish school, go to university, and find work so they can move out of the welfare cycle,” Ms Stavis said.

“Without this specialist service, they will be forced into crisis accommodation.

That will be tragic.”

Mr Robertson joined with his parliamentary colleagues Linda Burney, Sophie Cotsis, Carmel Tebbutt and Penny Sharpe as well as inner Sydney Labor candidates to urge concerned locals to sign the petition that would force the government to debate the reforms in Parliament.

“The Lillian Howell Project has been offering young girls safety and support for over a quarter of a century, but is now being forced to shut its doors,” Ms Burney said.

arents can be forgiven for being confused about what’s happening to child care benefits. The Productivity Commission released a report this week recommending the Child Care Rebate be means tested.

Local member Anthony Albanese said the Government was planning to cut the Child Care Benefit while Assistant Minister for Education Sussan Ley said the rate of Child Care Benefit has actually been increased.

Mr Albanese said legislation currently before Parliament will see people earning as little as $42,000 a year impacted by cuts to the Child Care Benefit.

“The Abbott Government seems intent on making life difficult for low and middleincome families,” Mr Albanese said.

“The Child Care Benefit is a means-tested payment, and by cutting it the Abbott Government is hurting families who can least afford it.”

He said no previous Government has ever moved to cut the Child Care Benefit, describing it as an unprecedented attack.

“We should be helping parents into the workplace, not forcing them out of it,” he said.

“Since the election the Government has announced over $1 billion in cuts to child care, this one being the latest. Now is the time to send a strong message to the Senate that these cuts need to be stopped.”

Minister Ley said the proposed Budget measure relates to income thresholds for a means-test.

“If a family’s income and circumstances do not change from one financial year to the next there should be no negative impact on their assistance,” Minister Ley said.

“In fact, many families may see an increase in the amount of Child Care Benefit they receive as a result of a CPI increase which could see up to $264 extra in Child Care Benefit alone for a low-income family with one child in full-time care this year.”

She said it’s important families are aware they may also be eligible to have 50 per cent of their child care costs covered up to $7,500 by the non means-tested Child Care Rebate.

“Labor is clearly worried NSW families are blaming them for child care fees skyrocketing 53 per cent during their six years in government,” Minister Ley said.

“Only the Abbott Government is committed to making child care more affordable, flexible and accessible for NSW families.”

Man arrested over brutal attacks on women

Police are appealing for public assistance after the robbery of a convenience store in Enmore last weekend. Shortly before 9.30pm on Sunday, July 20, two men entered a convenience store on Enmore Road and threatened the shop attendant.

The pair fled the location with cash a short time later and were last seen running across Enmore Road and into Reiby Street. No one was injured during the incident.

Specialist officers from the Dog Unit assisted in a search of the area; however the men were not found. Both males are described as being of Caucasian appearance and of a medium build. The first male was last seen wearing a light-grey and black-coloured hooded jumper. The second male was wearing a red-coloured jumper.

A man has been arrested after a number of women were assaulted in Sydney’s CBD last Thursday.

The alleged assaults occurred between 1.45pm and 6.30pm on Thursday, July 17.

It is alleged that, in each instance a man has approached a woman or group of women at random and assaulted them.

All of the women suffered bruising but did not require further medical treatment by a paramedic.

Police were called to Wynyard Park about 1.10pm on Friday, July 18, 2014 where they arrested a 26-year-old man in relation to the assaults.

He was subsequently charged with nine counts of common assault and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Man falls off fence while trying to access his house

A 20-year-old woman has received a Criminal Infringement Notice for stealing at a supermarket in Stanmore on Monday, July 21.

About 5.30pm, a witness saw the woman put an assortment of foods and drinks in her handbag. The witness approached the woman where she attempted to run out of the store.

An off duty police officer apprehended the female and police attended shortly after.

The woman admitted to stealing the food and it was returned to the store.

Police subsequently gave the woman a Criminal Infringement Notice for stealing the goods.

A man has been involved in an unfortunate incident where he has injured his back.

About 1am on Saturday, July 19, a 48-year-old man arriving home from a night out attempted to walk along a fence to gain access to his room when he left his keys inside.

While attempting this, the man has fallen off the fence and injured his back. A witness heard the man calling for help and contacted Police.

The man was conveyed by ambulance officers to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment.

The man twisted his vertebra in the lower lumber region of his back.

Sun shines on Council with new solar panels

arrickville Council has installed 80 new solar panels on the roof of its Administration Building in Petersham, reducing its carbon emissions and saving on electricity costs.

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said green power could deliver massive savings both for the environment and people’s pockets.

“This is the way forward for Council and our community,” Mayor Haylen said.

“In just one week, Council’s Admin building has avoided 320kg of carbon dioxide emissions and generated 450 kWh (kilowatt hours) – an average Australian home uses just 18kWh per day.”

The new 20kilowatt solar photovoltaic system will produce an estimated 30,000 kilowatt hours per annum.

“The new panels will mean a saving of 31 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

That’s equivalent to taking about seven cars off the road,” Mayor Haylen said.

“The panels will also produce enough energy to completely power five average Australian homes for a year.”

Residents will be able to monitor these savings throughout the year via a digital graph on Council’s website.

“We want to lead by example. And with

residents able to visit Council’s website and view the savings being made, they’ll feel more confident in investing in solar power themselves,” she said.

“Council is dedicated to supporting the uptake of low carbon, renewable energy in our homes, businesses, streets and public spaces as part our commitment to a more sustainable future.”

The panels were installed by Solgen, following their work with City of Sydney and Willoughby Councils on similar solar projects.

The benefits of solar power have already been seen at Council’s Chrissie Cotter gallery in Camperdown, whose 1.5 kilowatt solar panels (coupled with LED lighting) have decreased electricity consumption by approximately 45 per cent since their installation in November 2012. This equates to an annual saving of approximately $600.

The project is part of Council’s commitment to the Renewable Energy Master Plan for Southern Sydney which aims to change attitudes and ways of doing business in the region and decrease the reliance of fossil fuels.

Marrickville Council is now working on implementing the Master Plan’s renewable energy projects, such as solar bulk buying, bioenergy initiatives, and urbanrural wind partnerships.

2 Dance Performing Arts in Camperdown is teaming up with six of the finalists from ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ to raise funds for Youth Off The Streets.

Season Four champion Michael Dameski will join with finalists Ashleigh Tavares, Eden Petrovski, Stephen Perez, Chris Tsattalios and Jordan Turner to host a series of dance workshops on Sunday, August 17.

Q2 Dance director and founder Shannon Hsu has a long-standing affiliation with Youth Off The Streets after volunteering at the organisation during high school, and she saw an opportunity to combine her love of dance and community work when organising a workshop with members of the Top 20 from Australia’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ TV show.

She says Youth Off The Streets assists young people as they work to turn their lives around from the challenges of neglect, homelessness, substance abuse and psychological trauma.

“I approached the ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ contestants about the workshop and let them know of my fundraising idea and we were all super excited to get involved with this worthwhile cause. I

Q2 Dance students enjoying a lesson think it’s important for us to give back to the community, especially the youth,” Ms Hsu said.

She says she established her dance school with the intention of not only providing her kids with the highest calibre of dance and performance training but to also to teach them moral values of respect and appreciation.

“I believe challenging our students,

especially our youth, has a more rewarding result. Their vulnerability to learn allows them to be sponges, making it easier to teach as they absorb new skills and choreography at an incredible pace,” she said.

“This allows them to become aware of their ability and talents, in turn raising their self-esteem, which allows them to achieve their best.”

The workshops will be in the styles of Hip Hop, Jazz and Contemporary and are aimed at all levels and ages so anyone is welcome to attend. Ms Hsu said all three styles will be taught to each age group.

The workshops will take place on Sunday, August 17 at Q2 Dance, 1/105-107 Parramatta Road, Camperdown. There will be morning and afternoon sessions.

he first ever representative match of physical disability Rugby League saw the NSW Physical Disability Representative Rugby League Association All Stars defeat the Combined Indigenous Nations 28-16 in an exciting and challenging match in Redfern last week.

The game was part of the 2014 NAIDOC week celebrations to support and encourage healthy living and social engagement for people with disability.

Celebrity guest players included former Gold Coast and Roosters player Ron Gibbs, former Norths and Manly star Cliff Lyons, and former Penrith and Rabbitohs player Rhys Wesser.

Awards for best and fairest were named for both sides and included Nick Riches for All Stars and Kyle Schaberg for the Combined Indigenous.

Games are played over two twenty minute halves with modified rules combining elements of tackle and touch football.

Players wear either red or black shorts.

Players wearing red shorts only need to be touched to effect a tackle while players wearing black shorts need to be tackled.

A maximum of two able bodied players per team are allowed on the field at any time. They can’t score points and only need to be touched for a tackle to be effected.

There is a small PDRL competition featuring teams from the Newtown Jets, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Sydney Roosters and Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

Wheat bag warning NSW Minister for Fair Trading Matthew Mason-Cox today warned residents to be vigilant with wheat bags and heat packs following two related fire incidents last week.

Mr Mason-Cox said it was important for consumers to be aware of the dangers associated with wheat bags and other heat pack products including plush toys containing wheat.

“These products should never be used to warm beds or in spaces where heat can’t escape,” he said.

Last week, Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters responded to two wheat bag or

heat pack related fires. So far this year, firefighters have responded to at least eight wheat bag or heat pack related fires.

Fire and Rescue NSW Assistant Commissioner Mark Whybro said: “Wheat and other grain products are combustible at high temperatures, and if grain-filled heat packs are used incorrectly, it can ignite and start a fire. People should avoid using homemade heat packs.’’

Mr Mason-Cox added that it is absolutely essential wheat bag products are used according to the manufacturers’ instructions.

Each week during the winter months firefighters attend an average of 102 house fires, according to Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins, with the most dangerous room being the kitchen, which is where more than half of all house fires start.

If purchasing makeup isn’t stressful enough, with all the different brands, colours and variations in products, why not throw in the consideration that what you’re buying may not be what you think it is and could putting you and your skin in danger.

This was realised by a number of people who recently bought cosmetics from retailers in Sydney and western Sydney that were in fact counterfeit products of real brands, including counterfeit MAC cosmetics.

NSW Fair Trading has since seized over 8,000 counterfeit products during raids, but even they are sure to admit that there is probably more out there.

“The raids followed a Fair Trading investigation into consumer complaints about products they had purchased from a Sydney retailer,” said NSW Fair Trading Minister Matthew Mason-Cox. “Alarmingly, one complainant reported experiencing burns to her face after using the counterfeit products. Others reported that it was not until the product packaging had been opened that it became obvious they had purchased a fake due to a different colour and consistency to the genuine article.”

Burns? Yep, you read that right, burns.

Can you imagine coming home from a store, so thrilled to have picked up some MAC for a bargain, only to discover that when you actually use it, it causes painful burn-like blisters?

I actually can’t think of anything worse.

MAC and its trademark investigators assisted Fair Trading in taking down the stores selling counterfeit goods.

“The goods have been tested and they are proven to be counterfeit. These products are of poor quality and their ingredients of dubious origin,” Mr Mason-Cox said.

“The cosmetic industry is a billion dollar market and our concern is that consumers can be misled into paying top dollar for fake and inferior products.

“In May this year, Fair Trading successfully prosecuted Michael Lam, a Paddy’s Markets trader, for selling counterfeit football clothing. He was ordered to pay fines and costs of $17,180 by Parramatta Local Court.”

Some breeds with a poor hair coat (such as mexican hairless dogs and chinese crested dogs) require more involved skin care in winter due to the lack of protection of fur. If you plan on taking your dog to Thredbo or Perisher this year, there are a couple of things you need to remember.

Because of the lack of fur on their pads, dogs can lose a lot of body warmth through this route, so applying dog ‘booties’ is vital to avoid hypothermia outdoors.

If walking on the snow, the snow can condense and harden and get lodged in between the pads of the paw. If left there for too long, the freezing temperature can cause a burn to the skin which can take a while to heal. To avoid this, take your pet for shorter, more frequent walks.

It’s funny how little some care about what they eat. I guess ignorance can be bliss... for a little while. But it’s not that hard to research food these days. I found some interesting research on artificial sweeteners on a site called greenmedinfo.com.

If you were told to eat a synthetic chemical whose structure is only a few atoms away from the deadly pesticide DDT, and you knew that not only were there no long term human safety studies performed on it, but that it had been already proven in short term tests to have a lot of adverse health effects, would you still eat it? Millions of people including our children are!

Why? To save a few calories!

Some people actually believe it’s a healthy choice. Sucralose has nice brand names like Splenda but despite the intended insinuation, sucralose is not a form of sucrose or cane sugar.

It’s real name is 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-BETA-D-fructofuranosyl-4-chloro-4-deoxy-alpha-D-galactopyranoside. I guess that wouldn’t sell too well though.

They make sucralose in a lab, using a complex process involving dozens of chemicals you wouldn’t want to pronounce let alone consume. Basically, the chemists force chlorine into an unnatural chemical bond with a sugar molecule, resulting in a sweeter product, but at a price: a huge amount of artificial chemicals must be added to keep sucralose from hopefully digesting in our bodies.

The makers of sucralose say this chemical passes unchanged into the urine and faeces, when in fact, up to 11 per cent to 27 per cent is absorbed into the body (FDA, 1999).

In fact, the varying degrees to which sucralose is absorbed is used as a marker for gut and intestinal permeability to determine certain disease states. Once absorbed, between 1.6 per cent to 12.2 per cent of this chlorocarbon accumulates in the body.

Sounds to me like it’s not really so sweet after all. I don’t think my family should be eating it, but, as with everything, you choose what to put in your mouth, you make your own mind up.

From the White Album to American punk rock hen my call gets connected to Phil Jamieson I find him in a Sydney hotel room doing his washing before he heads out for dumplings and a movie. The same time the day before he was on the Concert Hall stage at the Opera House in front of thousands of people, dressed in a baby blue jacket and bow tie singing songs from the Beatles’ ‘White Album’ and getting rather intimate with a select few audience members.

Such is the life of the frontman of one of Australia’s most loved rock bands, Grinspoon. Last year the band decided to go on an indefinite hiatus, which has left Jamieson to occupy himself.

One of the ways he is filling the time is by doing another round of the hugely successful ‘The Beatles’ White Album Concert Series’ with his equally talented contemporaries Chris Cheney (The Living End), Tim Rogers (You Am I) and singer/ songwriter Josh Pyke.

“It’s a very magical experience to do that show. It’s just an honour for me to be involved and I’m having a ball as you can probably tell,” Jamieson explains.

The ‘White Album’ – as it is known though it is actually self titled – is hugely diverse with the 30 tracks coming from a range of genres including rock, jazz and avante garde.

“It’s not the easiest record, sure there’s some big hits on it like ‘U.S.S.R’ and ‘Blackbird’ but then there’s some really crazy weird songs like ‘Piggies’ and stuff that is just so off its head,” says Jamieson.

Along with the White Album tour Jamieson has been heading out on acoustic dates, and audiences will get a chance to see him perform at the Tattersalls Hotel on Friday, August 1.

“I will probably look quite sharp, I’ll be dressed well,” he explains of the upcoming gig.

“I’m going to bring a drummer and a bass player to fill out some of the songs. I might do a cover of a couple of songs and I might tell some funny jokes.”

Jamieson also hints at a smoke machine and a bubble machine joining him on stage as well.

“It’s going to be great, I can’t wait. And also the Panthers are having a good year right? So it’s a good time to be out in Penrith,” he said.

After Grinspoon decided to have an indefinite period of time apart, Jamieson found that getting a normal job wasn’t really going to be an option. Thank god for that because what audiences clearly want is more of the talented performer.

headed out for some slightly quieter gigs than the ones he played with Grinspoon.

“It’s very lonely,” he jokes about the solo work.

“Basically the band went on hiatus in December and I sat around for ages at home and learnt how to cook. I was doing great stuff like making school lunches and vacuuming and washing, just doing normal domestic stuff and then my wife said ‘Buddy, it’s time you f***ing went and did something’.”

Part of the ‘something’ that he did was two acoustic shows in May of this year with good friend Scott Russo, frontman of the American punk rock band Unwritten Law. “I rang him, actually when I was doing my cooking and doing my boring domestic stuff, and I said, ‘look, do you want me to manage your tour when you come out here’ and their management, probably wisely, said ‘I think that’s a really bad idea’.

“I’m like ‘okay, fair enough, why don’t we do a show together’.”

The two shows were so successful that the they are joining forces again in December for a run of gigs across Australia, which will no doubt please fans of Grinspoon, Unwritten Law and good music.

Though he is clearly enjoying the new acoustic gigs Jamieson doesn’t seem to be too keen on an acoustic album just yet.

“Oh god no,” he laughed.

“I will release something probably by the end of the year; I’ll put out some sort of recorded music. It won’t necessarily be acoustic I don’t think but it will have me singing on it and it will probably be called Phil Jamieson and it will be some sort of product, for want of a better term.”

As with her previous Winter Secrets tours, a local act in each state was given the chance to join Clare on stage to perform one of her songs.

hen Spanish winemaker Freixenet decided to look seriously at the Australian market the business quickly invested in the purchase of a mixed fruit farm on Victoria’s Murray River.

It wasted no time in using the vineyards there to put out a couple of 2012 sparkling wines under its already internationally-recognised Azahara label.

Both were an instant success, and Freixenet has now followed up with a non-fizz Azahara Pinot Grigio and also a Shiraz.

Winemaker Dr Phil Spillman is delighted at their reflection of the character of the Victorian property’s orange groves (Azahara in fact is Spanish for orange blossom), together with the avocado and mango plantations that are criss-crossed by the vineyard blocks.

“We’re serious about having a good go at making something really special here,” Dr Spillman says.

“Wines in a style befitting the Spanish dining and entertaining experience, whilst still staying true to the qualities naturally expressed by the Australian farm.”

The 2013 Azahara Pinot Grigio has certainly reflected that aim, with a wonderful palate of crunchy apples, fresh lemon and spiced pears, and a creamy mouth feel.

Add some nice acidity and at $15 this makes a marvellous drop with Mediterranean-style salads, and seafoods like salt and pepper squid or barbecued white fish fillets. Definitely one to keep in mind for spring and summer.

Toyota has announced an impressive sales milestone for the Land Cruiser wagon in Australia while releasing a value-laden ‘Altitude’ special-edition model that offers more than $5,000 of added luxury, comfort, safety and convenience.

The arrival of the new 200 Series Altitude closely follows delivery of the 300,000th Land Cruiser station wagon – just one of the many variants offered locally to carry Toyota’s longest-running nameplate.

Powered exclusively by a twin-turbo V8 diesel engine, the eight-seat Altitude is based on the Land Cruiser GXL grade with premium paint. Just 600 examples are being produced.

It gains a raft of features usually reserved for the higher grade Land Cruiser 200 Series VX and Sahara models, yet it is priced just $1,505 more than the host vehicle at $91,220.

wenty sportspeople from Sydney University are competing at the Commonwealth Games, which started this week in Glasgow.

The majority are from the athletics club including sprinters Jarrod Geddes, Jin Su Jung and Ella Nelson; hurdlers Ian Dewhurst, Nick Hough and Michelle Jenneke; 400m runner Annaliese Rubie, 800m runner Josh Ralph, steeplechaser James Nipperess, 5000m runner Emily Brichacek and wheelchair athlete Angela Ballard.

Sydney University Athletics Club head coach Dean Gleeson said their contingent constitutes 10 per cent of the Australian athletics squad at the Games.

“It tops off what has been a truly remarkable year for the Athletics Club with 11 athletes named on the team, including eight who are current students,” Mr Gleeson said.

Two rugby players were selected in the Rugby Sevens squad, which is expected to feature in the medals.

Forward Ed Jenkins has been named captain of the Australian team.

400m runner Anneliese Rubie is part of a strong Sydney Uni contingent at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

He was a member of the side that won a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Back Greg Jeloudev is a prolific tryscorer and a member of the University’s elite athlete program.

Team coach Geraint John said the tournament would be an excellent opportunity to build on a fantastic end of season performance in London, where Australia finished runners up at the final tournament of the 2013/14 Sevens World Series.

“In this Commonwealth Games squad, I think we have an extremely talented group of players with the right mix of experience and youth. I’m looking forward to seeing what the team can produce in Glasgow,” Mr John said.

Other Sydney University sportspeople in the Games squad are diver Matthew Mitcham who was a gold medallist at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, rhythmic gymnast Jaelle Cohen, pistol shooter Emily Esposito, swimmer Matthew Abood, table tennis player Kane Townsend and wrestler Jayden Lawrence.

The Australian team is expected to have a great performance in the medal tally this Games. The Commonwealth Games will run until Sunday, August 3.
