here was a lot of robust debate at Marrickville Council this week as they voted in favour of some WestConnex motions, against others, against a special rate variation, against moving a peace debate just before ANZAC Day next year and against an independent review of the zoning and development controls for the Victoria Road precinct.

The latter debate saw two large groups in attendance, one organised by the Marrickville Community Planning Collective bearing placards against the proposal, and another connected to the Danias family which owns a lot of the land in the area being considered for rezoning and would like to see it redeveloped.

David Tierney spoke to the meeting on behalf of the Danias family. He argued that for a large redevelopment such as is being considered you need clear guidelines from the State Government and Council regarding what can be allowed on the site. He also said he was willing to sit down with residents concerned about the proposal and listen to their concerns.

Louise Crabtree spoke on behalf of the Marrickville Community Planning Collective. She raised concerns that it would end up like Wolli Creek or Barangaroo and pushed for more affordable housing and retaining the artistic community in the area.

ABC funding cuts have an impact on all of us – far and wide

Give your pet the treatment it deserves

I confess when it comes to the ABC, I’m not the most impartial observer. When I get up first thing in the morning, I turn on NewsRadio and let Sandy Aloisi, Marius Benson and Chris Glassock bring me up to speed with what’s been happening in the world.

If I’m in the car it’s 702 or Triple J depending on what mood I’m in.

Before we got a set top box, our TV was for all intents and purposes stuck on the ABC but now we’ve worked out how to use the remote we can watch ABC1, ABC2, ABC3 or ABC24. It is possible to change channels after all.

So, understandably, I was concerned by the news that the ABC was going to be cut substantially and certain programs would go. But which ones?

I get the impression that many in the current government would like to see the end of the ‘7.30 Report’, ‘Lateline’, ‘Q&A’, ‘Insiders’ and probably the 7pm News for good measure.

In fact, it’s not just the government, Clive Palmer gives the impression he would rather not have most of those programs which for the most part fail to ask the right questions forcing him to terminate the interview early.

They seem to have got their way with ‘Lateline’ which is being shunted to ABC24 where it will struggle to maintain its audience and, as a consequence, quality guests.

The state editions of the ‘7.30 Report’ have also gone but that will please the state governments more than the feds.

TV sports coverage has also been hit hard with virtually every live sports coverage being cancelled.

Maybe next year, when the Prime Minister realises he can’t watch Sydney club rugby on TV anymore, he might experience some pangs of remorse at the cuts.

But what about the women’s sport being cut, the Women’s National Basketball League or the W-League soccer?

These are the top level sports for women in this country. Our national women’s basketball team, the Opals is one of the best in the world.

They took out bronze medal at this year’s world championships and won the championship in 2006.

At the past five Olympic Games, they have finished in the medals.

What does that say about women’s sport in Australia?

world cups and won the Asian Cup in 2010. Now neither their national competition, the W-league, nor the WNBL is guaranteed of TV coverage next season.

What does that say about women’s sport in Australia? Surely, it is incumbent on the ABC to support competitions such as this if the commercial channels have no interest in them.

The ABC’s Adelaide studios are set to close as well which produce programs such as ‘Behind the News’, ‘The Cook and the Chef’, ‘Dream Build’, ‘Poh’s Kitchen’, ‘Restoration Australia’ and ‘Talking Heads’.

Interestingly, Christopher Pyne, the South Australian based Minister for Education launched a petition against the closure of the Adelaide studios but targeted the petition at the ABC Board.

During a debate on the ‘Today Show’ this week, local member Anthony Albanese pulled him up on this suggesting he petition himself rather than the Board. “You’re the Government. Act like it,” Mr Albanese told Minister Pyne.

Are there cuts that can be made to the ABC? A number of conservative commentators have suggested it cut back on its digital arm, allowing it to maintain its traditional focus in radio and television.

ABC Managing Director Mark Scott said around 100 websites would be shut down but getting rid of its digital arm altogether would be a backward step akin to not getting into other technological developments as they had occurred such as colour television or even television itself given its history was in radio.

What about the additional digital TV and radio channels that have proliferated recently? Do we need ABC2, 3, 24, Double J, ABC Jazz, etc? Possibly not but the ABC’s Charter which is contained in the ABC Act states that the organisation’s function is to “provide within Australia innovative and comprehensive broadcasting services of a high standard as part of the Australian broadcasting system consisting of national, commercial and community sectors” and “broadcasting programs that contribute to a sense of national identity and inform and entertain, and reflect the cultural diversity of, the Australian community”.

We need the ABC. People in rural areas, where there is no other news or entertainment, need it.

But people in the towns and cities need it too, to reflect that cultural diversity that isn’t always found on commercial television and radio.

arrickville Police, Marrickville West Public School and local politicians joined with the Multi Mix Mob for a White Ribbon Day event at Alex Trevallion Plaza in Marrickville this week.

The Multi Mix Mob is a predominately Aboriginal mum’s playgroup, and this was the fifth year it hosted a White Ribbon Day barbecue in Marrickville to give all residents an opportunity to Say No to Violence Against Women.

Charlie Coorey from Marrickville Council said the statistics regarding domestic violence were frightening.

“We can all do something about domestic violence,” Mr Coorey said.

“Our responsibility is to stand up and not condone violence. Today is the day to start taking that responsibility.”

Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt said she was pleased that White Ribbon Day was drawing attention to the issue but concerned that violence against women is still far too prevalent both in Australia and around the world.

“Every week, one woman in Australia will die at the hands of a partner or ex-partner,” Ms Tebbutt said.

“Domestic violence has a profound impact on the victims but also on the broader community. It’s really important to speak up against violence every day.”

The event was also supported by Marrickville Council, Catholic Care, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Metro Migrant Resource Centre, and other community groups.

Elsewhere, the NSW Government announced that NSW Police and the Department of Family & Community Services had become the first NSW government agencies to sign up to White Ribbon’s Workplace Accreditation Program.

Minister for Women Pru Goward commended the two agencies for the decision.

“These NSW Government agencies are now at the front of the pack when it comes to proactive initiatives to reduce violence against women,” Minister Goward said.

“Broadening community awareness is an important part of primary prevention and our workplaces have an important role to play.”

Marrickville Mayor Mark Gardiner said Marrickville was a remarkably tolerant and open-minded community but that doesn’t mean it is less likely to be affected by the problem of violence against women.

“Domestic violence is a widespread

Australian consumers’ love affair with beetroot continues, with shoppers saying its great taste and nutritional value are the main reasons they keep coming back to the summer classic.

New data from Project Harvest, a monthly survey tracking Australian vegetable consumption, shows that Australian consumers are buying almost a kilogram of beetroot three times a month, with the summer staple featuring strongly in weekday dinners.

“Beetroot has long been a mainstay of Australian burgers and soups, and this data proves that it remains a quintessentially Australian vegetable,” said AUSVEG spokesperson Andrew White.

arrickville Council has announced the winners of its 2014 Spring Garden Competition.

Mary Balch and Deb Evans of Hawkshurst Street in Marrickville took out the Edible Garden category with a garden the judges said “just invites you in to explore, with a wonderful mix of edible and native plants ... with showy flowers, really productive raised vegetable beds, bright fabrics on outdoor furniture and fun whimsical garden sculptures of chickens, ducks, cats and rabbits.”

Kirsten Moore, from Addison Road Marrickville, took out the Front Garden Category and the Most Water Efficient Garden Award. Her garden was described as featuring “very cleverly chosen foliage colours that tie in with the colours of the stained glass window in the front of the house.”

Equal first winners of Best Large Garden, Karen Walker and John Erdaide of Porter Avenue Marrickville described their garden as a retreat where they can relax and chill out with a very eclectic mix of tropical, native, fruit trees and vegies/herbs.

Artists restore community hub Eyesore no more: Local families invited to explore rejuvenated area

isitors to Reverse Garbage or the Addison Road Child Care Centre over the past year or so will have noticed restoration work being undertaken on the sculptures between the two huts. That area was officially reopened this week as the Yenmala Nura Indigenous Storytelling Garden.

Reverse Garbage CEO Dare Kavanagh said the statues were originally built 30 years ago by a team of community artists but were never quite finished and had deteriorated over the years to become a “dangerous eyesore” that parents tried to keep their children away from.

She is hopeful that parents will now encourage their children to explore the garden with its range of creatures, animals, totems and symbols brought to life via traditional and contemporary Aboriginal designs.

Award winning artist Brett Parker from Billyara Aboriginal Art was commissioned to repair and repaint the sculptures which he did with the assistance of a group of volunteers.

“When I first arrived at the garden, I saw all the possible Dreamtime and creation stories,” Mr Parker said.

created a space where the community can learn about Indigenous artwork and culture in a fun and engaging way.”

He said the design evolved throughout

the project but the main thing he wanted to include was the songline which “connects all aboriginal people from across Australia”.

The garden also features edible bush tucker for the community to sample and take home such as native leek, bush peppermint and bush spinach.

Reverse Garbage Marketing Manager Mark Bond said they reused and recycled material to repair the garden in keeping with the philosophy of Reverse Garbage.

“The pyramid and vertical garden beds have been made from old wooden pallets, planters from old timber and a giant crocodile created from car tyres,” Mr Bond said.

“We are fortunate to also collaborate with Petersham TAFE Outreach and Palletable Furniture who teach youth at risk new skills, such as making the picnic tables in the garden from wooden pallets.”

He said they are also looking forward to completing a mosaic Yarning Circle made from unwanted wall tiles as the next stage of the project.

Yenmala Nura translates as “Let’s walk through country” and the opening included a traditional smoking ceremony, Aboriginal dancers and bush tucker.

Police snapshot St Peters: Public appeal after serious crash

Hurlstone Park: Shot fired during attempted robbery

Police are appealing for witnesses after three people were hit by a car in St Peters this week. Emergency services were called to the scene about 5.30pm on Tuesday, November 25. Police were told a car collided with three people – two women, aged 23 and 24, and a 24-year-old man – as they were crossing the Princes Highway at the intersection with Bishop Street.

The 23-year-old woman sustained a serious head injury. The other woman has facial injuries while the man has cuts to a leg and arm. They were all taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment. The driver of the car, a 31-year-old man, was not injured.

He was taken to RPA for mandatory blood and urine testing. Police would like to speak to any witnesses who haven’t come forward.

Police are investigating after a shot was fired during the attempted robbery of a service station in Hurlstone Park.

Just before 1am last Saturday, November 22, a man armed with both a firearm and knife entered a service station on Canterbury Road. The man, who was wearing a red and gold ‘ironman’ mask, threatened the male console operator with the weapons.

The worker locked himself in a storage area and contacted emergency services.

The armed man fired a shot towards the counter area, before running off along Canterbury Road empty-handed. No one was injured in the incident.

Police conducted extensive patrols of the area with the assistance of the Dog Unit; however the man was not located.

Stanmore: Investigation launched into house fire

Lewisham: Man arrested after local drug bust

Police are appealing for information following a house fire at Stanmore this week.

About 11.15pm on Tuesday, November 25, emergency services were called to a residence on Railway Avenue after reports of a fire. Fire & Rescue NSW personnel gained entry to the premises a short time later and extinguished the blaze. There was no one inside the home at the time; it having been unoccupied while renovations were being carried out. A crime scene was established at the house, which will be examined by detectives and specialist forensic officers. Inquiries into the matter are continuing and police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

A 34-year-old man was arrested in Lewisham last weekend and charged with supply, possession of a prohibited drug and possession of equipment to administer prohibited drugs after he was found with an amount of methamphetamine (ice) in the back seat of his car. About 11.10pm last Sunday, November 23, police stopped the man in his Range Rover after he mounted a median strip. Police searched the man and his vehicle and located a bong, a glass pipe and three small clear resealable bags containing ice, syringes and needles.

The man was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station where he was refused bail.

Opal card can now be used on Light Rail

he NSW Government has announced the Light Rail will accept the Opal Card from next Monday, December 1 and new real-time apps are available so customers can work out when the next tram will arrive.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said they had brought forward the addition of Opal to the light rail by a number of months.

“From next week light rail customers will be able to tap on and tap off services from 23 stops between Dulwich Hill and Central and interchange seamlessly with trains, ferries and buses,” Minister Berejiklian said.

“This is great news for customers who have been flocking to the new Inner West Light Rail Extension since we opened it earlier this year. The light rail now links the community with popular locations in Sydney’s centre and the Inner West, including Chinatown, Darling Harbour, the Sydney Fish Market and Leichhardt.”

Minister Berejiklian said light rail fares will be calculated by distance and cost the same as bus fares.

As an example, she said a customer who catches light rail from Arlington

Light rail passengers will be able to use their Opal Cards from next week

to Lewisham West, then a train from Lewisham to Town Hall will pay only $5.40 (peak train) or $4.40 (off-peak train), compared to a paper light rail ticket and train ticket fare of $7.40.

She reminded customers catching light rail with Opal to get used to tapping on at light rail stops before they board and tapping off after they get off their light rail service so the system can calculate the distance they have travelled.

The Minister also announced real-time apps for customers catching light rail and Sydney Ferries services.

She said real-time transport apps for trains and buses were introduced in 2012 and customers are now using their smart phone to make more than 55 million requests for real-time information every month.

“I am pleased we have been able to expand real-time information to ferries and light rail so more customers can now plan their journey ahead of time and track when their light rail and ferry service will arrive,” Minister Berejiklian said.

She said six transport apps – NextThere, TripView, TransitTimes+, TripGo, Triptastic and Arrivo Sydney – are available across iPhone and Android platforms.

hen Natalie Cheney returned to Sydney this year after studying art in Melbourne, she started looking for a cheap workspace in a creative hub like she had found in Melbourne. Dismayed to find nothing suitable in Sydney, she decided to create her own hub.

Nauti Studios is on the top floor of an industrial building on Parramatta Road, Stanmore.

It houses 18 people ranging from artists, fashion designers and musicians through to scientists and a martial arts teacher cum pole dancer.

“My main goal behind this space is I want to support arts and creativity in Sydney and make it affordable for people,” Ms Cheney said.

“I don’t think people should pay their entire wage to have a creative space. I was part of a studio in Melbourne and it was amazing, really inspiring. That was one of the main inspirations for me creating the space when I decided I wanted to stay in Sydney.”

She says the place she found in Stanmore was full of junk and “about an inch of black dust on everything” when she first looked at it but it had a lot of potential open space and natural light.

“Nobody wanted to touch the place because it was in such bad shape. I think I spent two months cleaning it and getting rid of all the rubbish,” she said.

Some of the “rubbish” she was able to recycle into the construction of new workspaces. She also got materials from recycled building material warehouses such as Metro Reusables in St Peters.

Seven months after moving in, the place is full with a waiting list and a buzz being created in the communal space. She says surrounding yourself with other creative types is great for your own creativity.

“Whenever we get together and chat there will always be ideas that come out of it,” Ms Cheney said.

“Emily, a fashion designer, is collaborating with an illustrator who is doing fabric for Emily. I’m going to collaborate with one of the science guys on making a really unusual type of beer. I’m going to do the business side of it and he’s going to do the chemistry side. You never know what’s going to happen because everyone here is really multi disciplinary.”

She says Stanmore is the perfect location because it’s in the middle of the Inner West with its large creative community while still being just minutes away from the city.

Ms Cheney says after seven months of really hard work getting the studio happening, she feels she can step back a little now and even do some creative work for herself.

“I’ve had a few people tell me they’ve always thought of doing something like this,” she said.

“I think it’s rare for someone to follow through on those thoughts but if someone came to me for advice, I’d give it to them or help them.”

I am a self-confessed swimwear addict and if there was some kind of anonymous meeting for bikini-obsessed people, I would be obliged to sign myself up.

I literally own enough bikini tops and bottoms that I would be able to get myself through every weekend (Saturdays and Sundays) this summer without having to re-wear the same combination again.

My favourite Instagram account is ‘A Bikini A Day’ and I can’t scroll past more than two pictures on my feed without seeing a post of a someone in a bikini or a post by a swimwear designer.

My point is that I know enough about swimwear to know what is hot and what is in this season, so here are my tips on what to look for.

• Anything nautical: Blues, reds and whites are the hottest colours in swimwear this season and you only have to look at Cantik’s newest collection to figure it out.

• Boho prints: If there is ever a style that goes perfectly with beach-hair it is boho and this season we are lucky enough to see the trend taking the lead.

Tigerlily Swimwear stocks some of the best boho swimwear around and a lot of the mainstream Australian surf brands are taking on the look this season as well.

A great way to boho-up your look without trying too hard is to add a coverup.

• Brazillian cut: Yes, I am talking about Brazillian coverage swimwear, which is generally pretty skimpy and generally fits somewhere between a g-string and full coverage bottoms.

• Non-traditional styles: Stray away from the traditional triangle bikini top and string tie bottoms this season and go for something adventurous.

I really love the crop-style top – Cantik’s ‘Nevada’ bikini is the perfect example – because it offers a little more coverage and is different while not being too dramatic.

• Tops you can wear more than one way: Turning a traditional halter-style triangle top into a bra-style top is simple and is an easy way to re-vamp an old bikini.

Exercising during pregnancy

The weather in Sydney is starting to heat up and the sand and waves are becoming more alluring.

Taking your dog (or cat) down to the beach can be a fun activity for all, but there are some potential hazards that need to be understood.

The sand between the paws can be such a nice feeling for your pet, however, DR. Heat exhaustion can occur very quickly at the beach given the temperature, direct sun and rampant activity that often occurs.

Limiting the time down at the shore to no more than two hours, providing a source of shade and always carrying a portable bowl of water that is kept topped up can help prevent the effects of heat exhaustion.

The reflection of the sun from the water and sand makes UV rays especially harmful to both us and our pets at the beach. If your pet has any hairless areas such as behind the nose or on the ears, then I’d recommend applying a layer of non-toxic zinc to avoid a sunburn.

We hear so many rumours and myths about what is and isn’t right when it comes to exercising both during and immediately after child birth.

A lack of knowledge and understanding of what can and can’t be done can sometimes mean that even the fittest of women give up their fitness program when they become pregnant, and then find it even harder to return to it post pregnancy. In some cases women can even feel alienated or seen in a negative light for choosing to exercise during this period.

I trained a client recently right up to child birth, and lost count of how many times people asked me ‘should she be training when she is so pregnant?’. The reality is that there is not a right or wrong approach to exercising during pregnancy, but it is important that if you decide to continue exercising that you do so under the guidance of your GP and fitness professional.

As a general guideline you should not look to take on exercise at a level or intensity that you were not doing prior to getting pregnant, in other words, if you are not a runner but decide to become one when you fall pregnant then this is probably not the most appropriate time to do so.

There is no doubt that pregnancy involves some significant changes both physically and emotionally, hormone and fluid levels will fluctuate, muscles and joints will adapt to accommodate the extra weight, energy levels will effect motivation, and the senses can be heightened, and this is to name just a few!

As women move through pregnancy and into each trimester their program will need to be scaled accordingly. Whilst there are definitely things that are not recommended and considerations to be made during each trimester, the most important thing is that the client listens to their body and communicates effectively with their trainer. By doing this many women are able to exercise safely right through pregnancy and resume again very soon afterwards, with no negative effects on the health of their baby.

Cabaret show aims to break down barriers s part of International Day of People with Disability, a number of comedians with disabilities will perform at a comedy cabaret event next Wednesday called ‘No Offence, But!’.

Headlining the show will be Stella Young, a renowned disability activist, journalist and comedian performing material from her show ‘Tales from the Crip’.

Director Liesel Badorrek said the show was part of the NSW Government’s ‘Don’t DIS my ABILITY’ campaign and she will bring her own experiences working with people with disability to the cabaret performance.

“I’m excited about the thrust of the Don’t DIS campaign, it will take people in a different direction,” Ms Badorrek said.

“We all have various challenges. For some people, the challenges are more recognisable, but it’s important we don’t put people in a box or make them separate, and I’m excited about being part of that learning process.”

Also appearing will be Geneveive Fricker who was a national finalist in the 2011 Triple J Raw Comedy Competition and tipped to be one of the next big things in comedy.

“The Don’t Dis My Ability campaign really appeals to me because it’s about treating people with dignity which is what

we should be doing anyway,” Ms Fricker said.

“I’m a huge fan of Stella’s (Young) and I’ve worked with Darien (Brown) before but I am very excited to be sharing the stage with some great talent as well.”

Jim Longley from the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care said the event will encourage people to re-evaluate the way they think about and engage with people with disabilities.

“Our performers are keen to inform people’s views and make them think about their etiquette around disability,” Mr Longley said.

Mr Longley said comedy could go a long way in helping break down barriers and improve understanding and acceptance.

“We want to build accessible and inclusive communities, schools and workplaces in which everyone is equally supported to pursue their goals,” Mr Longley said.

“Comedy goes a long way in achieving this by breaking down barriers and removing stereotypes, while educating the broader community about disability.”

Host for the evening will be radio and TV personality Myf Warhurst with other performers including Marty Bright, Alex Jones and Darien Brown.

Time to see their faces again ollowing the death of The Angels’ lead singer Doc Neeson from a brain tumour earlier this year, two former Angels, Rick and John Brewster are stepping out of the shadows to tell their story in words and, of course, song.

Back in 1970, the two brothers formed a band called the Moonshine Jug and String Band which, as its name implied involved them playing banjo, washboard and jug among other instruments.

They were joined by singer Doc Neeson and the sound gradually evolved from hillbilly to rock n roll. They changed their name to the Keystone Angels and then simply The Angels.

Throughout the late 70s and early 80s they recorded a number of classic rock anthems, most notably ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?’, ‘Take a Long

While John Brewster left the band for a few years in the late 80s, the trio of Neeson and the Brewsters were the core of the band throughout its 40 year history.

Tonight the Brewsters bring their show ‘Brothers, Angels and Demons’ to the Factory Floor in Marrickville.

The show was originally put together as part of Adelaide Cabaret Festival a few years back and now they feel the time is right to share with the rest of the country.

They promise to tell the stories of the highs of the band, touring, recording in the legendary Albert Studios as well as the lows, their musical differences and their near death experience when their small plane went down during a storm in the Northern Territory.

In accepting his ARIA Award, he shouted out “King of Pop!”, feeling his award was both the natural successor to and equivalent of the ‘King of Pop’ awards won by the likes of Johnny Farnham, Daryl Braithwaite and John Paul Young in the 1970s.

However, his music couldn’t be further from seventies pop. Stylistically closer to Australian alternative artists like Nick Cave or the Saints, Graney added a mischievous self-mocking quality that saw songs like ‘I’m Gonna Release Your Soul’, ‘Rock n Roll is Where I Hide’, ‘You’re Just Too Hip Baby’ and ‘Feelin Kinda Sporty’ get substantial airplay.

1993 saw him get three songs into the Triple J Hottest 100 and his album ‘You Wanna Be There But You Don’t Wanna Travel’ reach Number 10 in the ARIA Charts starting him on the path of critical and popular acclaim that saw him receive his ARIA Award in 1996.

A year later in 1997 he wound up the Coral Snakes and since then has worked as The Dave Graney Show then the Lurid Yellow Mist which eventually morphed into the mistLY. It includes drummer Clare Moore who has performed with Graney since the days of the Sputniks in Adelaide prior to the Moodists being formed, Stuart Perera who has played guitar with Graney since 1998 and “newcomer” bassist Stu Thomas who has only been with Graney since 2004.

They will be playing songs from ‘Fearful Wiggings’ which Graney describes as an “art pop solo album” in which each song is in a world and time of its own.

“It’s a best of from the future,” Graney says.

It’s the film mash up that fans have been waiting for. Cult classic TV show ‘Fat Pizza’ and the Logie award-winning comedy ‘Housos’ have come together for the aptly titled ‘Fat Pizza vs Housos’.

Chef and owner of Fat Pizza, Bobo Gigliotti, played by John Boxer, has been released from prison and is looking for a new spot for his business but unfortunately it’s been 15 years and rents have skyrocketed.

The only place he can afford to set up shop is in the notorious Sunnyvale, a housing commission suburb.

This sets the scene for plenty of comedy madness between the characters from each show, which will have you rolling with laughter.

The cast features a collection of favourites from ‘Fat Pizza’ and ‘Housos’ including Pauly played by Paul Fenech, Shazza played by Elle Dawe and Habib, played

by Tahir Bilgic. Fans will get to see the return of ‘Sleek the Elite’ and ‘Fat Pizza vs Housos’ also features cameos by a host of stars including rocker Angry Anderson, Kyle Sandilands and Nick Giannopoulos from ‘The Wog Boy’.

Southern California metal band P.O.D have released a new album which gives fans a slightly different take on some of their biggest hits. The album titled ‘SoCal Sessions’ is an acoustic release that features the band’s most well-known tracks including new hits and older releases like ‘Youth of the Nation’ and ‘Alive’.

If you loved ‘Alive’ in its original format – and millions of album sales suggest many people did – then you’ll want to hear the acoustic reworking. It’s just as full and powerful as the original but features the beauty that only a collection of acoustic guitars can bring. The rawness and driving beat mean that fans of a heavier sound will still find much to love; this is definitely not a watered down version by any stretch of the imagination.

‘SoCal Sessions’ also includes reworkings of more recent tracks including ‘Panic and Run’ and ‘Beautiful’ from the band’s most recent album 2012’s ‘Murdered Love’.

Acoustic albums can be tricky. There’s always the chance that fans won’t take too well to hearing their favourite tracks in a new light. But from the songs released so far it’s hard to see many faults with the stripped back, yet still heavy vibe that P.O.D have created.

any years ago before wines were identified on labels by their grape varieties, they were named after their place of origin – quite often down to the actual block within a vineyard.

In a somewhat back to the future move, the Hunter Valley’s Andrew Margan has released a white and a red emulating this old practice, labelling them Field Blend White – Block 8 and Field Blend Red – Block 11.

The white comprises predominantly Semillon and smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio from a vineyard planted with these mixed varieties 40 years ago, all the fruit from the 2014 vineyard being picked and vinified together in a single batch. The red is predominantly Shiraz with some Mataro and Tempranillo, and underwent the same process.

We loved the white that’s wonderfully fruity with forward citrus and tropical characters and crispy dry on the palate. It’s also nicely soft, and a great drop at $15 to enjoy at this time of year with a whole host of summery seafood ideas.

One to note: If you’re looking for a stand-out drop as a gift for a wine-loving family member or friend this Christmas, can we suggest Rosemount Estate’s 2012 Balmoral Syrah – then watch their reaction when you tell them not to open it until at least 2020 or if they’re really patient, not for another 15 years beyond this.

Made from tiny quantities of exceptional fruit off a range of Rosemount’s best McLaren Vale vineyards, this is a ripper drop already but will only get better and better over those years in the cellar.

Foxtel have announced ‘Game of Thrones’ is the most downloaded show on their new BoxSets channel since launching earlier this month. 94,000 episodes of ‘Games of Thrones’ have already been legally downloaded and viewed.

KIA’S unique new partnership Kia Motors has announced exciting details of a new collaboration with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to promote ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD and Kia’s sponsorship of the upcoming Australian Open.

The partnership with Fox will see the unveiling of a special X-Men-inspired Kia Sorento one week before the first major tennis championship of 2015 – with Kia’s ‘superhuman’ brand ambassador,

tennis star Rafael Nadal, revealing the car. In the lead up to the unveiling of the one-off model, Kia Motors is inviting fans of the X-Men franchise and the Korean car manufacturer to guess which X-Men character has inspired the car’s unique design.

Visitors who go to the Kia Motors Facebook page can guess from four iconic X-Men characters: Storm, Wolverine, Mystique and Magneto. Fans guessing correctly will be entered into a prize draw

to win a DVD copy of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.

Kia will release a video on its Facebook page and YouTube in mid-December, showing Rafael Nadal teaming up with the X-Men and taking on the Sentinels – the robotic antagonists from the latest film in the X-Men franchise – who are threatening the 2015 Australian Open. To save the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the X-Men and Nadal are helped by a ‘Kia X-Car’, which leads the attack.

ewtown’s Jack Hiscox was formally drafted by the Sydney Swans this week as the club looks to bring in some new blood and next year hopefully go one better than this year’s grand final loss to Hawthorn.

Hiscox wasn’t surprised by his selection as the club had announced he would be their second choice (38th choice overall) in the AFL Draft. However, he was “over the moon” when he first heard he would be going to the Swans.

“I’m really excited and really keen to get into training with the boys and the main group and put in some hard work and see where it can get me,” Hiscox said.

“Being part of a professional sporting environment is the main thing and being in the team you’ve grown up supporting is a big part of wanting to be successful.”

Hiscox has lived in Newtown his whole life and went to school at Newington College in Stanmore. He took up AFL when he started playing Paul Kelly Cup at age 11.

“I just loved running around and getting plenty touches of the footy,” he said.

Jack Hiscox at training with the Swans “When you’re young, if you play a sport you’re good at, you get more attracted to it and want to go further. I found myself to be pretty good when I started and I always loved playing it. The speed of the game with the capabilities I had really suited the type of athlete I am.”

He brings good marking and ability to read the play, but it’s most likely he’ll have to work his way into the top side.

“Realistically, I’ll start in the reserve side and then it’s just a matter of putting a lot of hard work in and showing the coaches you’re capable of playing at the senior level,” he said.
