ith chil dcare cen tre places inc reasingly bein g sough t in the Inner West, Marrickv ille Counc il recently voted to fund a new childcare centre that will add up to 60 new places.

It w ill be loc ated a t the si te of the D ebbie and Abbey B orgia Communi ty R ecreation Cen tre in South Marrickville.

It is understood that long day care centres across the Marrickv ille loc al g overnment area are r unning a t full c apacity. Ma yor J o Ha ylen said the $3.2 million projec t will come as a relief for Marrickville families.

“There are almost 2, 000 names on Counc il’s childcare waiting list, and the demand is only getting higher,” Mayor Haylen said.

“Our recent Community Facilities study iden tified a despera te need for more Counc il childcare services, w ith an ad ditional 6 50 kids ag ed 0- 4 years expected to be living in the LGA by 2031.”

The Ma yor said the projec t was the result of a longer term v iew Counc il took tha t formed the consensus for approval.

On August 29, wi th the F ederal Election looming, then Shado w E ducation Minister Christo pher P yne said: “Y ou c an vote Liberal or L abor and you’ll get exactly the same amount of funding for your school”.

On Tuesday, the no w Education Minister said: “What one g overnment does, another g overnment can undo”. And there, my friends, is the very lar ge gap betw een wha t poli ticians sa y when they’re desperate for y our vote and wha t they do once they get it.

Mr Pyne this week said he would bring forward plans to in troduce a new educ ation fundin g model, but the total “ funding envelope” would remain the same. The Coali tion w ill stick w ith the agreed arran gements for 2014 but a new funding model will be introduced for 2015.

Mr Pyne believes that because the total “ funding envelope” remains the same, he has not bro ken an election promise.

Try tellin g tha t to the schools who believ ed Labor and the Coali tion were on a ‘uni ty ticket’ when it came to education funding.

Mr Pyne lost all credibility on Tuesday when he was directly asked by a reporter at a press conference if he w ould keep his promise to deli ver the same amount of fundin g for indi vidual schools that Labor had promised.

“It [domestic v iolence] is a subjec t that is silent and very rarely spoken about and White Ribbon Day has transformed in the Marrickville area to an ev ent that is widespread. The silence is slo wly bein g bro ken,” Ms Ryan said.

“This year we took to the streets of Marrickville and en gaged the loc al community. We flooded Marrickville streets and businesses w ith whi te ribbons to mak e people understand they need to tak e action and v iolence against w omen is not acceptable nor will it be tolerated.”

Retailers across Australia have had their extended warranty practices examined by consumer protection agencies, including NSW Fair Trading.

Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said the joint operation undertaken during 2013 examined the practices of 141 retailers across Australia, including 23 in NSW. “The national operation focused on retailers who commonly sell extended warranties with their products, such as whitegoods, electronics and new cars,” Mr Stowe said.

Mr Stowe said often manufacturers’ warranties were only valid for 12 months, with retailers selling extended warranties.

“Stockpiled waste tyres pose a fire risk, and tyre fires emit toxic fumes harmful to our health and the environment,” Ms Parker said.

“The lowering of the threshold for the legal storage of waste tyres will send a clear message to operators involved in the storage and disposal of waste tyres that they must understand their responsibilities to manage their sites lawfully.

“The EPA is conducting a blitz on tyre retailers in the Sydney, Illawarra and the Hunter and will inspect at least 250 tyre retailers by the end of the year to ensure that the retailers are disposing of waste tyres lawfully.”

Tough new penalties will be introduced for those flouting the rules.

Council increases car park spaces for share cars to reduce congestion

Car sharing is a thri ving industry with a growing number of companies takin g to the streets to provide this innovate service including the inner west.

But limi ted parkin g is the problem, a t least until recently.

Last week Marrickville Council voted to make car sharing as hassle-free as possible by ad ding more c ar spaces for people to drop off their vehicles.

Also as part of the expanding Council initiative there w ill be designa ted off- street car share spaces in mediu m to large sized developments.

“Giving up your car shouldn’t mean giving up your freedom. We want to mak e it easier for people in our community to live

There is a lot of ev idence to suggest that car sharing is having a positive impact on the environment.

“Car share v ehicles replace about sev en motor vehicles, and an yone who’s driven around the inner w est looking for a park will appreciate that. They also mean a big reduction in con gestion and emissions, ” Mayor Haylen said.

“While man y residen ts lik e the idea of car sharing, the current lack of dedicated parking spaces makes it an unrealistic option.

“We wan t c ar- sharers to feel confiden t that they c an g et to w ork, p op out for some milk or pick the kids up from school, without having to venture streets away to find a share-car.”

Peter Dix on f rom Marrickv ille said the idea of car sharing was popular in the city, and access to car spaces was easy too.

“The city already has designa ted spaces for car share – this was a g ood decision by the Council.”

Mr Dixon said he had been usin g the car share scheme for four y ears now and the system worked well to meet his everyday needs and errands.

“Having the extra car spaces in the Marrickville area w ould mak e people ’s li ve a lot easier,” Mr Dixon said.

Cyclist's death sparks renewed fight for Greenway shared path to Sydney It was indefinitely deferred but local residents want the Greenway back on the agenda BASIL NAIMET @ICWJournalist

he recent death of a 40- year-old female cyclist from St P eters has re-ignited a call for the Greenway to be built alon g the Cooks Ri ver leading to Sydney Harbour.

Friends of the Greenway, a group of local residents, have lobbied the NS W Government to buil d an off- road fi ve kilometre link between the Cooks River and Sydney Harbour, alongside the light rail extension to Dulwich Hill.

It is understood a proposal had been put to the Government but a decision had been indefinitely deferred in August 2011.

Friends of the Green way spok esperson Jennifer Kent said the concern was for the safety of people whether they were pedestrians or cyclists.

“To date, only a tiny 100 metre section of what would have been the off-road Greenway has been built alon gside the Dulwich Grove sta tion, betw een H ercules Street and New Canterbury Road,” she said.

“The Greenway represents exactly what Sydney’s c yclists need; a safe off- road route linked to upgraded public transport and environmental improvements.”

But accor ding to the NS W G overnment striking a balance that provided a solution for road users and cyclists would mean extensive research and analysis.

“The N SW G overnment d eferred t he Greenway in S eptember 2 011 t o e nsure delivery of the Inner W est Ligh t Rail Ex tension, and committed to investigate demand and design solutions for a pro posed shared pa th along the Cooks Ri ver to Whi te B ay corridor ,” a g overnment spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said both groups needed to take precautions.

“Drivers need to be vigilant and look out for c yclists, partic ularly when mak ing a turn or when using the kerbside lane where cyclists are often travelling. Bicycle riders also ha ve responsibili ties such as obeying road rules.”

Police snapshot Man brutally attacked by seven males on Sunday

Man falls to roadway after being hit by offender

About 12.30am on Sunday, November 24, a male victim was walking home along Douglas Street, Petersham after having drinks at a nearby hotel. Whilst walking he noticed he was being followed by a group of seven males.

As he approached the intersection of Crystal Street and Douglas Street he was set upon by the males who assaulted and maliciously wounded him.

After the attack the victim noticed he had deep lacerations to his right arm. As a result the victim called for an ambulance. The victim was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Marrickville Local Area Command on 9568 9299.

About 2.05am on Thursday, November 21, a victim was walking along Livingstone Road, Marrickville on the eastern footpath. At this time the victim noticed a male running toward him from behind from about 50 metres away.

As the victim approached the intersection of Graham Avenue he noticed the male had caught up with him and moved to one side to let him pass.

As the victim moved to the side the male has approached the victim and punched him several times. As a result the victim has fallen to the roadway. The male has then stood over the victim and demanded his bag and wallet. The male has run off and was last seen heading in a easterly direction on Graham Ave, Marrickville.

Woman faces 22 charges for stolen property and ID cards

Fake email for Australia Post has dangerous malware

A woman has been charged with 22 property and identity-related offences in Camperdown. Following investigations, police officers attached to the Leichhardt Local Area Command executed a search warrant at a home on Pyrmont Bridge Road last Friday. Police allegedly found numerous identity and personal cards belonging to other people and electrical items believed to be stolen. The 34-yearold woman was arrested at the scene and taken to Newtown Police Station. She was charged with possess identity information to commit indictable offence (x13), goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen (x7) and other offences (x2).

Police are warning local residents that fake emails from Australia Post are currently in circulation.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has received many reports of an email appearing to be sent by Australia Post, which contains a malicious attachment.

If the attachment is opened, it may download and install malware onto your computing device. This can enable criminals to steal your personal information, particularly your online banking details.

She is concerned tha t the Links to Learning program, which funds nongovernment or ganisations to support students who are a t risk of disen gaging from school, won’t receive funding.

“It is shameful that despite being asked on numerous occ asions, the Minister will not pro vide certainty for these pro grams tha t deli ver support for some of the most v ulnerable studen ts in the state,” she said.

It is understood 55 or ganisations have now been wai ting for nearly tw o y ears for the O’Farrell Government to indicate its intentions about this program.

These include ser vices in the Inner West such as R osemount Y outh and Family S ervices, Marrickv ille Youth Resource Centre and Marrickville Community Training Centre.

“For a v ery modest fundin g of $8 million in total, these organisations provide critical ser vices tha t assist studen ts to remain connected to learning,” she said.

Education Minister Adrian Piccoli.

“For many of these students these programs are quite literally a life-saver.”

However Education Minister Mr Piccoli said the funding process was very clear and w ill be pro vided to schools f rom 2014 as part of the phased implemen tation of the NSW Government’s Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

He said the funding would be based on the school’s needs and ref lect the characteristics of individual schools.

“We are also supporting those students who ha ve recen tly arri ved in A ustralia, with initial intensive English tuition for these students,” he said.

ay M urray Neighbourhood Centre has undergone a name change and ha ve mo ved premises in order to c ater for the broader community.

Their name was derived in the 1970’s but in 2012 the members dec ided to v ote on a name change that better describes the work they do.

Now known as Community and Cultural Connections Inc, they are based a t Hut 1, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville.

Their foc us has alwa ys been on soc ial change for the inner w est, with particular help for the f rail and ag ed, and pro viding English lan guage classes tha t they ha ve expanded to cater for growth.

The name chan ge c ame in 2012 so they could head in a more strategic direction.

The sad thing is that often, fashion is thought to be relevant only to thin, pretty, twenty-something women, which is so far from the truth.

Just last w eek I was cha tting w ith some o ver 55’s and one lovely w oman e xpressed her disappoin tment w ith the fac t that a mature aged model is hard to find.

I took this as a challen ge, scouring through magazines of all kinds and direc ted at all ag es, finding that older models are almost nonexistent – except for one spec ial feature in a highend fashion shoot tha t I found. Wh y this w ould be the c ase, I am not sure – just bec ause y ou are ag eing doesn ’t mean you will stop c aring about the thin gs you love when y ou are younger. Plus, older people still wear clothes!

The misconception that fashion is only relevant to thin people is also ridiculous – all you have to do is take a look around where you shop and there are plus- size clothes and models everywhere in every display.

There are designers dedicated to creating sexy and practical clothes for curvy women.

I c an see ho w people coul d believ e the misconception though; it comes back to adv ertising. The same g oes for the other misconception tha t I men tioned, about pret ty women – have you ever seen an unattractive model? Plus, what about all the men?

It seems to me that most brands and stores are marketing to the minority – tha t being skinny, pretty women, as opposed to the rest of us. Maybe they realise that everyone, regardless of who we are, will buy clothes anyway and can’t be bothered changing the industry or, maybe they just haven’t discovered how much more they coul d sell if they mark eted to the a verage man or woman.

People who start exercising even late in life can reap the benefit of good health, a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine says.

Researchers tracked the health of nearly 3,500 people whose average age was 64, for more than eight years.

People who already had a record of sustained and regular exercise, meaning vigorous activity at least once a w eek, boosted their likelihood of ‘healthy ageing’ sevenfold more than compared to people with a lifestyle of persistent inactivity. ‘Healthy ageing’ was rated by an absence of major diseases and disabili ties, g ood men tal health ( the lack of depression or cognitive decline), and the abili ty to maintain stable social connections. The gain ev en amon g new comers to e xercise was roughly triple. “Significant health benefits were... seen among participants who became physically active relatively late in life,� the paper, released on Monday, said.

Without regular w orkouts, maximum aerobic po wer falls in men b y up to half betw een the ag es of 20 and 60 . Women begin to lose fi tness aged around 35, w ith aerobic power also falling by up to half by the age of 60.

Eventually, everyday ac tivities become “in tolerably fatiguing� for older men and women.

Another study they published found tha t rela tively highintensity aerobic exercise over a relatively long period of time reverses these losses and could boost maximal aerobic power by 25 per cent.

Long-term aerobic trainin g c an maintain or restore aerobic power in later life. The effect is the equivalent of turning back the biological clock for older people by up to 12 years.

The level of exertion should be enough to raise the heart rate to 120 bea ts a minute or higher , which includes a brisk walk and swimming.

But even better, a regu lar exercise programme c an slow or reverse the loss of aerobic fitness, reducing the individual’s biological age and prolonging independence.

year, with a special album preview on Friday, January 10 and S aturday, January 11 2014 at The Bridge Hotel in Sydney.

Band founder and gui tarist J ohn Brew ster said tha t he was inc redibly happ y with the result of ‘ Talk The T alk’, which represents The An gels’ quintessential garage rock sound.

“My son Sam’s playing bass, tha t’s for kind of sad reasons bec ause we lost Chris Bailey back in April to cancer… so it’s been a pretty sad year for us, and it’s also been a really happy year because Chris did actually manage to come in to the studio and play on five of the tracks, Sam played on the other seven,” Brewster said.

Music has always been a family-oriented experience for Brewster , who grew up around music ians and began The An gels in its earliest form with his brother Rick.

“We grew up in a music al family , our grandfather was a concert pianist… dad was the lead cellist for the S ymphony Orchestra and he w as direc tor of music for the ABC so w e had music ians around us the whole time. I was sort of alwa ys into rock and roll, Rick was learnin g classic al piano and doin g brilliantly but he c ame over to m y side of the fence in the end, ” he said.

From their humble beginnings as a local band who pla yed a t uni versity gigs, The Angels rose up quickly and had plen ty of hits, inspiring the next generation of rock bands.

“It’s a grea t feeling, fantastic that some of these Americ an bands tha t c ame out of S eattle lik e Nir vana for e xample, w e were told that Kurt Cobain was a fan of the band. That would make sense because we were really big in S eattle, a lot of people don’t realise ho w w ell The An gels did in America,” Brewster said.

his w eekend w ill see the S alsa Solo A ustralia and In ternational Championships bein g hel d in Brisbane with a Marrickville couple taking part in the display of sexy dance moves and sequinned costumes.

The competition has an international flavour about it, with around 175 participants vying for top honours f rom Australia and New Zealand. And judg es f rom Europe and Americ a ha ve been f lown in just for the occasion.

Having represented Australia in his first ever competition in 2010 Marrickville resident Johnny Campos came third.

Now, partic ipating in the Open L atin Couples B achata w ith his partner Aimee Hartog who is also f rom Marrickv ille – a two time Australian ice dancing champion – they will be hoping to get to number one on the national stage together.

“We’re very excited because in the last year we have come second in almost every national competition,” explained an excited Mr Campos.

“We’ve only been first in NS W, so if w e win we will finally ha ve our first A ustral-

ian Champion title,” he added.

Leading up to the competi tion has been hard work – as you’d expect with a national title approaching.

But this ev ent has made the inner w est couple work even harder and w ith an ol d hand to guide them in the quest for a first place position.

“We are c urrently being coached by six time Salsa World Champion Oliver Pineda four evenings a week for at least two hours each time,” Mr Campos said.

“We put all that practice into our performances and i t pays off. We enter loc al events so that we can get used to being on stage in f ront of hundreds of people, ” he said.

And the competition will be fierce, with entrants f rom all o ver the coun try descending on Brisbane for the competition.

“Anybody can enter this competition but pretty much all L atin schools f rom every state in A ustralia are competin g as this is the biggest competition of the year for the Latin scene,” Mr Campos said.

The Salsa Solo Australia and International Championships will be held in Brisbane.

Mr C ampos and Ms Hartog w ill be competing in the Open L atin Couples Bachata Category in the professional division.

The w inners w ill get the chance to represent Australia in Miami at the International Salsa Summit in February 2014.

Bolstered by the ad dition of new import S am Young who pla yed for the Philadelphia Six ers and the M emphis Grizzlies, the Kin gs will be a force to be reckoned with when they take on the Tigers this Sunday, December 1.

Kings coach Shane Heal said Young would settle in after a couple of w eeks of being here and getting used to the Kings’ style of play.

He said he was disappoin ted w ith the loss to P erth W ildcats last round and said the loss wasn’t a reflection of the quality of play his team had showed in recent weeks.

The Sydney Kings share third position on the ladder with the Tig ers, with both sides ha ving 4 and 4 recor ds heading into their round 8 encounter, but the Kings have the percentages advantage and are hoping to capitalise.
