Greens favour light rail projects over Westconnex BASIL NAIMET
P
rivate motorways like the Westconnex are a waste of tax payers’ money according to the Greens, who will redirect $2.2 billion of infrastructure funding into two light rail networks for Sydney. Greens Senate candidate Cate Faehrmann said the mooted Westconnex was a waste of money and would prove counter-productive. “It’s yet another private motorway project that will dump more cars and more air pollution into Sydney’s inner west and do nothing to ease
western Sydney traffic congestion, she said. She said the $2.2 billion was better off being ploughed into the fi rst stage of the new $1.7 billion western Sydney light rail network to Parramatta CBD, with an additional $500 million to go towards a new Inner West light rail network; the fi rst leg from Central to Leichhardt. Ms Faehrmann said the Westconnex project would provide the same outcome for commuters as the light rail, however the light rail was a better option because of its flexibility, sustainability and would ease congestion, which costs the economy $5.1 billion each year. Federal candidate for Grayndler, Hall
Greenland said the Westconnex project was being pushed by the Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell for political reasons. “It is a $15 billion favour from Labor and the Liberals to the big infrastructure and fi nance corporations and is not in the public interest, he said. Mr Greenland implied that the two parties were covering up the details of the ‘business case’ when it should be put to public for rigorous assessment: “Westconnex does not best serve western Sydney’s future transport and employment needs.
