he NSW Government has announced work will start shortly on a $32 million upgrade for Marrickville Station.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said there will be new station entry points, a new concourse, stairs to boost customer access and CCTV cameras for added security.

“Two new lifts will be installed to make it easier for the elderly, people with disability and parents with prams to catch the train. When these improvements are complete, Marrickville Station will be accessible to all customers for the first time,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Canopies will be built to help protect customers from extreme weather and customers will be able to interchange more easily with kiss and ride facilities, accessible parking and a taxi rank.

The project is part of the NSW Government’s $770 million Transport Access Program. Work on Marrickville Station is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.

Local Liberal councillor Rosana Tyler said Marrickville Station was well used and she was very happy the upgrade was about to start.

“Introducing lifts will help mobility for the disabled and elderly but so will improving lighting and security. It’s important people feel safe getting on and off trains,” Cr Tyler said.

The announcement was also supported by the Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt and Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen who described it as a win for local residents.

Why can’t Opposition members be appointed to the Cabinet?

Former South Australian Liberal leader Martin Hamilton-Smith threw the cat among the pigeons this week when he resigned from the Liberal Party to become an independent and a Minister in Premier Jay Weatherill’s government.

Mr Hamilton-Smith said his decision was prompted by a desire to provide certainty to the government so it can get on with the business of governing the state.

Most people suspect the carrot of being offered a Ministry is more likely to be the motivation behind his decision.

Certainly many of his Liberal colleagues were scathing.

Current SA Liberal leader Steven Marshall described Hamilton-Smith’s defection “to a parasitic, divided and dysfunctional Labor Party” as an “act of political betrayal and treachery”.

Federal Government Minister Christopher Pyne (also a South Australian) described him as “the greatest traitor to his political party in the history of the state”.

An unknown vandal spray painted the front of Mr Hamilton-Smith’s office with the words “Deserter. Community won’t forget. Your time will come.”

Their anger is understandable.

The Liberal Party believed the opinion polls, which indicated they would win this year’s state election so were dismayed on election night to find they were two seats short of an outright majority.

The Labor Party didn’t have an outright majority either but were able to form government with the support of an independent. Mr Hamilton-Smith’s defection gives them a bit more breathing room.

However, why shouldn’t people from opposite sides of politics be allowed to serve as ministers in governments?

Rob Oakeshott, one of the federal independent members who supported Julia Gillard’s Labor government in the last federal parliament, is currently promoting a political memoir.

In it, he reveals an attempt to convince former Federal Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull to become a Minister in the Gillard administration.

The attempt appears not to have been too serious since Mr Turnbull says he doesn’t even recall it being made.

But would it have been the worst thing in the world? Australian politics is very adversarial.

They yell at each other across the Chamber without giving any impression that they actually

consider what the other side has to say.

What if you had people from different parties sitting together in the cabinet room, playing devil’s advocate on important issues away from the public gaze?

In the United States, there is a long tradition of presidents appointing members of the opposite political party in their cabinets.

When Barack Obama was elected president, he asked Robert Gates, who had been President George W Bush’s Secretary of Defence, to stay on in the role in his administration.

President Bush in turn had appointed Norman Mineta, a member of President Clinton’s administration, as Secretary of Transportation.

There is a culture in American politics of presidents trying to bridge the political spectrum.

Australia, as I said earlier, has a much more adversarial culture.

Apart from the long-standing coalition between the Liberal and National parties, most dalliances between political parties are marriages of convenience that end somewhat acrimoniously.

You would think that the Labor Party and Greens Party want the same basic outcomes so would make natural allies in politics.

But on the few occasions where they have tried to formalise a relationship in Tasmania and federally, they have walked away from the experience threatening to never again darken each others’ doors.

History has shown that minority governments usually lose office at the next election. So things don’t bode particularly well for Mr HamiltonSmith in South Australia.

If past experience is anything to go by, he will lose his seat at the next state election to an endorsed Liberal candidate.

I like the idealism of his claim that he made his decision in the best interests of the people of South Australia and in providing good government.

I think politicians would earn more respect from the public if they were more willing to bury the hatchet and discuss issues sensibly.

But I can’t help noting that Mr Hamilton-Smith’s website still says, “Martin believes working families have been punished under Jay Weatherill and Labor with higher state fees and charges and wrong priorities on health and education”.

He might want to update his website.

And he has a long way to go before he’ll be seen as a political reformer.

Pelican’s lucky rescue Mudcrab volunteers and WIRES save a tied up pelican from a grim fate CHRIS CONNOLLY

t’s a sad fact, but many animals and native wildlife fall victim to rubbish, plastic bottles and even fishing nets and lines.

However, one pelican last weekend was saved from its grim fate after a collaborative effort between local group Mudcrabs and WIRES saw the pelican rescued last Sunday on the Cooks River.

The Mudcrabs, a volunteer group which cares for the Cooks River by regularly collecting rubbish and restoring bush along the foreshore, had just finished a weeding bee near the boat harbour at Hurlstone Park when one of the volunteers noticed a pelican with fishing line trailing from its wing.

It appeared to be in obvious distress, unable to stretch its wing or fly and was working at the string trying to remove it frantically.

The volunteers contacted WIRES (the Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service) who dispatched one of its volunteers, Paul Thomas, to assist the bird.

Unfortunately, Mr Thomas was unable to reach the pelican as it was still able to swim quickly so Mudcrab volunteers Barney

Solomon (in his dinghy) and Jennifer Newman (in her kayak) volunteered to assist him catch the bird.

The trio found the injured pelican about a kilometre upstream near Canterbury Racecourse where they were able to capture it and take it back to the boat harbour for treatment.

Mr Thomas removed the fishing line which he described as spider line, a heavy duty fishing line.

He treated the wound, which indicated the bird had probably been tangled for some weeks and shortly after the pelican was able to fly again.

The Mudcrabs volunteers urged people not to abandon fishing lines in the river because of the effect it has on local birds such as this somewhat lucky pelican.

If you find an injured animal you can contact WIRES on 13 000 WIRES (13 000 94737).

They recommend handling the animal as little as possible to reduce distress to the animal and the threat of bites to yourself.

They also recommend removing threats to the animal such as dogs and cats from the vicinity.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has redesigned its website for smartphone users, making it quicker and easier for people to access Australia’s official weather forecasts using their mobile device.

“The Bureau is releasing a preview of the mobile website today for public testing and feedback, before formally releasing the site,” said Senator Simon Birmingham, Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment.

Local women’s housing services fear closures

he Leichhardt Marrickville Domestic Violence Liaison Committee is concerned that many independent inner city women’s services (including refuges) are about to close because of a change in government policy.

In February last year, then Minister for Family and Community Service Pru Goward released the Going Home Staying Home report, which she said was designed to improve specialist homelessness services.

However, Roxanne McMurray from the Leichhardt Women’s Health Centre says the losers in the reforms will be womenonly specialist services and refuges. It’s estimated the inner city will lose at least 20 specialist women’s services, and around 2,000 NSW women and their children will be directly affected.

“These are independent, communitymanaged refuges and integrated day programs for extremely vulnerable women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness due to domestic and family violence, child sexual abuse, criminal justice contact, drug and alcohol and mental health issues,” Ms McMurray said.

“The women’s-only refuges are literally ‘centres of excellence’. They have an innate understanding of their work, their clients and their communities – communities to which vulnerable women and children escape seeking refuge.

“They are women’s only services, established by women for women – often from grass roots advocacy and hard fought battles. They have moved through the times and are professional, accredited and comply with all the modern requirements.”

Ms McMurray addressed the Marrickville Council meeting last week and Council voted unanimously to support their campaign to retain the existing services.

“To see the doors of these shelters close would be devastating and affect the most vulnerable people in our community – such as women fleeing domestic violence," Mayor Jo Haylen said.

A spokesperson for the Department of Family and Community Services said funding to prevent and tackle homelessness will be maintained at current levels but the reforms would introduce new services designed to bring together early intervention, outreach and crisis supports.

“The new services will better meet the specific needs of women who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness,” the spokesperson said.

That is the question to be discussed next week at the Marrickville Refugee Forum.

Marrickville Council will host the forum in collaboration with the Marrickville Multicultural Interagency as part of Refugee Week.

The forum will look at the struggles facing refugees and asylum seekers in Australia and try to contribute to a greater understanding of the issues affecting them.

“Marrickville has a proud history of supporting refugees and asylum seekers, and last year Council re-affirmed its commitment as a Refugee Welcome Zone,” said Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen.

New youth centre approved Fighting Father spared a few bruises by Council’s generous donation

ulwich Hill’s ‘Fighting’ Father Dave Smith is pleased that work can start on rebuilding his youth centre that burnt down just over a year ago.

The old youth centre was in a 125-yearold hall that was set alight in an arson attack around 3.30am on April 22 last year.

Luckily no-one was injured and no neighbouring properties were seriously damaged in the incident.

Father Dave believes the culprit was a disgruntled client of the centre but no-one has been apprehended yet.

“From all reports he is still skulking around not too far from here and has thus far survived an ongoing career in petty crime,” Fr Dave said.

“The rest of us have moved on. We have levelled the old site, chosen our architect, drawn up our plans, done all our costings and now we are ready to build.”

It’s hoped construction will start in about September and finish mid next year.

Ever positive, Fr Dave saw a silver lining in being able to replace the old hall with a purpose built youth and community centre.

“It will also include a kitchen for functions and there will be a caretaker’s flat that will hopefully enhance security.”

Marrickville Council has approved the development application for the new youth centre and waived its normal Council fee of just under $18,000.

Fr Dave said he was unaware of the time and energy involved in putting together a development application and commended the Wardens of Holy Trinity Dulwich Hill who did the bulk of the work.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Councillors for supporting the Church’s youth work over the years.

“It has been a wonderful and cooperative relationship through which I believe we have truly made a difference in the lives of many in our community,” he said.

He added that while the waiver of the $18,000 fee might not seem like much, it was substantial given they still have more than $100,000 or so to raise to pay for the new centre.

“Most of the money I’ve raised over the last 24 years has been through me getting myself beaten up in boxing promotions, and I’m guessing that there may be quite a few bruises in that extra $18,000,” he said.

Pub staff threatened by two men wielding an axe

Residents warned of virus software scam

Police are appealing for witnesses after an armed robbery at a pub in Petersham late on Tuesday night. About 10.15pm, two men with their faces covered entered the pub on Parramatta Road.

One of the men threatened two male patrons with an axe, demanding they lay on the ground, which they did. The other man threatened two male staff members with a knife, demanding money from the till. They complied and handed over a sum of cash.

The two men then ran from the location, entered a maroon Ford Falcon that was last seen on Margaret Street. One man was described as medium build, wearing a red hooded jumper, black cargo pants, with black/bright green shoes. The other wore a black hooded jumper and white pants.

Police are warning residents to be aware of a scam where a caller claims to be a representative from Microsoft or another genuine service provider and tries to trick people into letting them gain remote access to their computer.

There are several variations to this scam, but generally the caller will claim they suspect your computer is infected and that they need remote access to check. If you allow them access, they will pretend to run a scan and report that your computer is infected. The caller will then try to convince you to purchase anti-virus software straight away to remove the infection. The fee may be a one-off payment or an ongoing subscription.

Man exposes himself to pedestrians on busy road

Baby boy locks his mother out of the house

A 32-year-old man has been taken to hospital due to being heavily affected by a prohibited drug.

At 12.30am on Sunday, May 25, a passing motorist flagged down police indicating there was a male wearing a dressing gown exposing himself, whilst walking up and down Marrickville Road.

Police located the male where it was clear the man was well affected by the effects of a prohibited drug.

An ambulance was called where they administered Narcan to help the man. He was then taken to hospital due to the effects of the drug and his inability to care for himself.

About 1.40pm on Monday, May 26, police attended an address in Petersham regarding an accidental lock out of a mother whose one-year-old boy was still inside the house. The mother of the child had left the child alone in a play area close by to collect a piece of clothing from the washing line.

The mother closed the back door and while outside the child accidently pushed down the dead bolt located at the bottom of the door, which locked the mother outside with no other access to the house.

Police rescue attended a short time later and gained entry to the house where they found the boy was unharmed and in good spirits.

ember for Grayndler Anthony Albanese has criticised the Federal Government’s budget decision to close Medicare Locals as of July 1 next year.

“Before the election, the Coalition promised no Medicare Local would close,” Mr Albanese said.

“This is another broken promise and another example that Abbott just doesn’t like the public.”

Speaking at the Medicare Local in Ashfield, he said the organisation provides crucial services.

“Whether it’s aiming to close the gap, addressing mental health, helping to prevent or manage chronic disease, supporting practices, educating health professionals or raising health awareness more generally, these are the Medicare Local programs that make a real difference in the Inner West,” he said.

“We need to know what this means for the Inner West and we need the Abbott Government to confirm that no jobs and services will be lost.”

Mr Albanese said a recent Medicare Locals Review Report recognised the great work these organisations do when it

comes to providing primary care.

“The Review confirms that Labor’s reforms to primary health care are the right ones, and that Medicare Locals, established to keep people well and out of hospital, are what the health system needs,” he said.

“Despite this Review, and in a move that will simply waste tax-payers’ dollars, Abbott will abolish our Medicare Locals and establish ‘Primary Health Networks’.”

Federal Health Minister Peter Dutton said Primary Health Networks (PHN) will work to ensure services across the primary, community and specialist sectors work together.

“A smaller number of PHNs will replace the Medicare Locals set up by the previous government to ensure health dollars are used more efficiently,” Mr Dutton said.

“General practice will be at the centre of this model, and PHNs are expected to align more closely with state and territory health network arrangements to ensure effective working relationships, and reduce duplication of effort.”

The Minister said PHNs will be more locally relevant, accountable and responsive through local health professionals’ involvement in Clinical Councils and consumer-led Community Advisory Committees.

he Federal Government’s proposed $20 billion Medical Research Future Fund will save a lot of lives, according to Marrickville councillor Emanuel Tsardoulias, who knows from personal experience just how life-changing that research can be.

“The way cancer is being treated has changed dramatically in the past couple of years,” Cr Tsardoulias said.

“18 months ago I was diagnosed with stage five melanoma and given three months to live. I was very fortunate that a new drug called Ipilimumab or Yervoy had just been added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

“It works by introducing inhibitors into the immune system and shutting off cells which activate cancer. 18 months later I’m fighting fit.”

Cr Tsardoulias said his type of melanoma, ocular melanoma, was very rare.

“It starts in the eye and in my case it wasn’t triggered by exposure to the sun or genetic factors,” he said.

“I had a BRAF test where they work out what your cancer reacts to. Depending on the results of that test, that determines what drugs you focus on.”

He said staying positive and changing

his lifestyle were crucial to his recovery.

“I had to stay focussed. I did meditation, took long walks. I changed my lifestyle and diet. I lost 62kg,” he said.

“If I didn’t have friends and family around me supporting me, keeping me positive, I wouldn’t have had the strength to continue.”

As the father of two young boys, he said they were a big part of his motivation.

Cr Tsardoulias’s experience has convinced him there needs to be more money going into medical research.

“I don’t support the Liberal Government but I don’t mind the Medicare co-payment if it’s going into research. For me $70 a year isn’t too big a price to pay,” he said.

“Before Yervoy was added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, it cost patients $130,000 for a course of treatment. That’s not possible for most Australians.

“I’d love to see more funding into the three big cancers in Australia; melanoma, breast cancer and bowel cancer. It would be great to see them finding cures or even better drugs.”

He is also full of praise for the newly opened cancer centre at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

“It’s fantastic. The treatment facilities are very modern. They do research there too. We need centres like that all over the place,” he said.

arrickville’s Aroma Coffee has taken out two of the top awards at the Australian International Coffee Awards in Melbourne recently. The company won the big prize, Champion Australian Roaster, as well as Champion Filter Coffee.

The awards, run by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, are considered the Oscars of coffee roasting and attracted over 800 entries from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan.

Aroma Coffee managing director Gavin Gam said he was stoked to win the award.

“Last year we got a couple of bronze medals,” Mr Gam said.

“This year, I decided to change a few things to make it better. We took home eight medals from 12 categories; two gold, a silver and five bronze.”

Mr Gam said Melbourne has been considered the coffee capital of the world for some time but he thinks things are changing.

“This year, NSW took out three of the five major awards. I tasted a lot of coffee when I was down in Melbourne. I had an open mind but I think Sydney is now the coffee capital. The quality here is clearly better.”

HSC students stranded Funding for distance education to cease six months prior to major exams

he Federal Government’s decision to stop funding its Youth Connections program has meant nine local children are at risk of not finishing their Higher School Certificate, according to Lyn Harrison from Rosemount Good Shepherd in Marrickville.

The students, who are unable to attend school, are completing their HSC via distance education through the TAFE OTEN network with support from Rosemount Good Shepherd and its Youth Connections program.

The students include 17-year-old Aboriginal student Taylor, who has studied through the Youth Connections Program for four years and is due to complete the HSC just six months after the Youth Connections funding will cease. “I found this funding decision really hard to process. Students who’ve been bullied just can’t go back to mainstream schooling. Why get rid of something that does so much good,� asked Taylor.

Her classmate, Grace, also 17, has been learning at Rosemount for five years.

Grace has suffered with extreme anxiety and was unable to progress in mainstream education.

Rosemount Good Shepherd’s Lyn Harrison said they are currently trying to raise $65,000 per year for two years to help Taylor, Grace and the other seven children finish their education. A feat that will be very difficult. “It is an incredible injustice to cease a program when students are halfway through their studies,� Ms Harrison said of the decision. “What kind of society are we, if we do not prioritise programs that protect and support our most vulnerable?�

Member for Marrickville, Carmel Tebbutt, spoke to some of the children and described the funding cut as a heartless act that will only hurt some of the most disadvantaged young people in the community. “The cutting of this program will impact on many local students who have overcome significant barriers to complete their education – they deserve all the support we can muster,� Ms Tebbutt said.

Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Senator Scott Ryan said the 2014-15 Budget delivers funding for a number of new initiatives to provide more opportunities for young Australians to participate in education or employment.

A Chinese man who recently made international headlines by dining free in an airline’s First Class Lounge for almost a year, may not be the trail-blazer he’s been made out to be. It seems he was beaten to the ruse by some devious young Aussie travel agents years ago.

The un-named Chinese man bought a fully-refundable First Class ticket with China Eastern Airlines in the city of Xi’an early last year, and immediately used it to enjoy a slap-up meal pre-flight in the airline’s Domestic VIP Lounge. After the meal he phoned the airline, re-scheduled his flight to the next day and went home.

That next day he returned to the airport, ate, drank, changed his flight to

yet the next day again, and once more went home‌ doing the same thing for an amazing 300 consecutive days until the airline realised just recently what he was up to.

But writing in an Australasian travel industry newsletter, travel journalist Peter Needham says that many years ago when paper tickets were still in use here, some enterprising young travel agents in a Sydney eastern suburbs agency would regularly write themselves a First Class ticket, then duck out to Sydney’s Mascot Airport where they’d simply show their paper ticket and be allowed into the airline’s First Class Domestic Lounge and enjoy the hospitality. Very sneaky!

ocal artist Maria Harding launched an exhibition in Marrickville this week featuring wonderful artworks of colourful birds painted on reclaimed wood.

An innovative and creative take on stencilling, she said all the pieces of wood were found on the streets of Marrickville and brought back to life as artworks using intricately hand cut stencils and acrylic paints.

“The works are a celebration of birdlife in all their glory,” Ms Harding explained of the exhibition.

The pieces on display at the local Petty Cash Cafe include a peacock, which she describes as her favourite, as well as cockatoos, a lyrebird and an owl.

She says she only got interested in stencils relatively recently when she did a fluoro pink stencil portrait of her sister and her rabbit for her 30th birthday as a present.

“She loved it, and I loved the process and result so much that I went on to do one of my 18-month-old son,” Ms Harding said of the gift.

“Friends wanted portraits of their little ones, and it is just growing organically from there.

“I use reclaimed wooden pallets and fencing palings as ‘canvases’ for my portraits and feel that the organic nature of the wood adds to the energy of the artwork, with no two being the same.”

Ms Harding, who has an honours degree in Fine Art with a painting major specialising in figurative work, says her work was recognised last year when she was selected as a finalist for the 2013 The Stencil Art Prize.

The Stencil Art Prize is a very prestigious competition that attracts entrants from all over the world. As a finalist, Ms Harding’s work was displayed at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery in Camperdown.

But Ms Harding does not stencil for recognition, she does it for the beauty of the art.

She believes art can have an energy that evokes emotions beyond words, and in all her portraits whether of children or birds, she aims to capture the spirit and personality of the subject with an added sprinkle of fun, magic and love.

“Not to mention the feel good factor you get from turning something that would otherwise be thrown away to landfill into something beautiful,” she said.

The exhibition ‘Bird Life’ by Maria Harding is on until June 19 at the Petty Cash Cafe, 68 Victoria Road, Marrickville, just near Enmore Park.

KAREN RIMMER There are always new goals to challenge you Biggest health/fitness misconception?

Wow! There are quite a few. One I often hear is that you have to be thin or heavily muscled to be fit and healthy. This is not necessarily the case, we can’t all get down to a body fat content of 12 per cent. This ties in nicely with your goal setting, be realistic.

How does fitness feature in your life?

I had been on the diet treadmill for over 10 years with no success. I had reached a very low point as the scales ruled my life.

A close friend suggested trying a personal trainer. Once I started exercising with my trainer I found the scales were irrelevant to my fitness levels. I learnt to listen to my body, exercise and implement a healthy eating routine. 15 years later I am still setting personal challenges and goals. For me, fitness is now a lifestyle.

Top three tips for good health?

1. Commitment. Once you have decided to start your exercise program you must commit. This might be one day a week or more, walking, riding a bicycle or working out at the gym. Another way to assist with your commitment is to have a training partner.

2. Dietary Planning. This plays an integral role in your good health e.g. planning meals, snacks and treats. Having your food prepared or at least planned for the day helps with this discipline.

Similarly, a sensible planning regime for exercise is also essential.

3. Set Goals. This will assist in maintaining focus. The goals must be realistic, attainable, measurable and time based.

Have a clear picture in your mind of what you want to achieve. The next step is to reward yourself on achieving a goal.

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy?

I enjoy numerous benefits. Being fit now allows me to be able to help other people become more active and improve their fitness. I enjoy a huge amount of personal satisfaction when I see one of my clients reach one of their goals or achieve something they have not done for years.

I remember the personal satisfaction I gained from achieving these milestones.

A daily ‘must do’?

For me, it’s a great breakfast. This sets me up for the day. I always vary my breakfast just to keep it fun. I make smoothies or cook eggs with mushrooms and asparagus or have a bowl of steel cut oats. I also enjoy paleo pancakes (recipes easily sourced through the internet) with fresh fruit and yogurt. I use fresh, free range, good fat foods as much as possible.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most?

To maintain interest, I vary my exercise routine regularly – swimming, running, stretching however I must admit weight workouts are my favourite because I experience a natural high after each session and over time I can see the physical results.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy.’

My motivation is the fact that fitness is my lifestyle. I take pride in the fact that I can do so many things now.

Buy home brand cosmetics to cut down on your costs

I have always known that I spend a little too much on my appearance, given the fact that every time I go into a store to purchase makeup, hair or other beauty products I come out missing a significant amount of cash, but to see a physical figure can be... crushing.

This week I did a quick quiz (you can find it here: www. invisalign.com.au/myspend) to find out how much I spend a year on my appearance, partly because I was interested and partly because it seemed like a fun thing to do at the time.

Now that I am out the other end was it interesting? Yes. Fun? Definitely not. Although the result is more of an approximate cost, it still hurt to see that I spend over $4,000 a year.

The quiz, created by Ipos Australia on behalf of Invisalign, takes into account all the money you spend on your appearance, whether you view it as a beauty regime or not.

It asks you how much your gym membership costs, how much you spend on toothpaste and how often you go to the hairdresser for a cut and colour.

Naturally, I asked my work colleagues to complete the survey too, with both women spending about $2,000 each and the man in the office spending only $600 a year – wow, guys have it easy!

70 per cent of us are shocked or surprised with the results, but we shouldn’t be... cosmetics really add up. Apart from giving up using makeup or completely changing your routine, finding a way to save money on cosmetics can be challenging – but it can be done.

Sale, sale, sale: It might seem like the obvious option but shopping when cosmetics are on sale will save you hundreds.

Don’t ignore a sale if you aren’t running low on a product, stock up on it instead.

Shop online: The cosmetic market is really competitive and part of that is because of the bounty of goodies you can purchase online. Products are often cheaper when you purchase them from overseas.

DIY: Check out some DIY videos online (there are loads of them) and have a go yourself at nails or hair dye.

Buy cheap: Try home brands but do your research!

Heading into winter, it’s that time of year where many of our colleagues and friends might be sniffling or coughing and we do the best we can to avoid catching a cold.

This time of year also sees a spike in the outbreak of kennel cough (KC), a very contagious respiratory disease affecting dogs.

While winter doesn’t directly cause KC, DR. SAM there is a lot of evidence to show that cool KOVAC air reduces blood flow to nasal passages Southern Cross and in turn dampens down the immune Veterinary Clinic system there. Like whooping cough, KC is not only debilitating, but it can progress to cause a potentially deadly lung infection.

Does my dog have KC?: KC causes a typical ‘goose-honking’ sound cough that can become repetitive if their windpipe is gently squeezed. Most dogs are usually very well and show no other signs. Unvaccinated dogs fare worse and can often show signs for months after infection.

Treatment: Most cases of KC go away on their own, but dogs with a suppressed immune system and older animals may require antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and cough suppressants.

It’s essential that you keep your pet away from other dogs while they have symptoms to prevent a local outbreak.

Prevention: While not 100 per cent effective, inoculation using a live intra-nasal vaccine is the best preventative (injectable vaccines aren’t as effective in stimulating local immunity in the nasal passages). A single dose is usually sufficient each year.

There were many risks in everyday life hundreds of years ago; childbirth and climate to name a couple. But the common diseases we suffer from today were not as prevalent. Neither were packaged, processed foods. Or anything genetically manipulated in a lab.

Yet what are we eating today? Genetically modified fruits and vegetables. Meat sourced from grain/hormone/antibiotic fed, unhealthy animals. Milk pasteurised and empty of any good nutrition.

And that’s the good food options. We eat packaged snacks that claim to be filled with all the vitamins our children need.

Fast food that is delivered to you very quickly but has been sitting on a shelf full of preservatives. Sugary drinks, soft drinks, energy drinks or juices filled with synthetic vitamins.

And a huge selection of grain products.

Breads; flat, round, sliced, thick, thin, brown, white, multigrain, low GI, high folate and fibre, Lebanese, Indian, I even saw a ‘breakfast’ loaf... Hope nobody accidentally eats it at lunchtime! The list goes on.

Common sense tells me we need to stop. Let’s take a look into our fridges and pantries and read a few labels. Chances are if you don’t know what an ingredient is, you shouldn’t be eating it.

Make it simple. Clean, pure water. Source good, free range, grass-fed meat. Find lots of fruits and vegetables, organic when possible. The best quality milk you can find.

They will give you all the real vitamins and minerals your body needs as well as all the other good compounds and cultures that are the foundation of a healthy, vital body.

Start eating the way our ancestors did. It might cost you a bit more, but if you don’t invest in your health now, you may be paying for your sickness later.

Boy band to man band, Hanson’s still got the talent hen three fresh-faced all-American boys from Tulsa Oklahoma released their impossibly catchy slice of pure pop – ‘MMMBop’ – in 1997, Isaac, Zac and Taylor Hanson set hearts a-flutter.

There were millions of girls swooning over their boyish charm and prodigious ability to write saccharine-sweet paeans to life, young love and positivity.

The band, responsible for a formidable 16 million global record sales, still commands a rabid and intensely loyal fan-base around the world, including Australia, where they will touch down in August as part of their current world tour in support of their sixth studio album, ‘Anthem’.

“We are so excited to be coming back down to Australia – our fans down there are awesome,” Isaac Hanson said.

“We were last down there in 2012 on the ‘Shout it Out’ tour and it was, like six years before that, so we made a promise on the last tour that we would get back down there more often so it’s good to be able to live up to that promise,” he added.

Given Hanson’s seemingly “overnight sensation” status following the release of ‘MMMBop’ and the subsequent multimillion selling album ‘Middle of Nowhere’ (despite releasing two independent albums previously), they were somewhat

However, one listen to their sixth album ‘Anthem’ – the fourth on their own label 3CG – and it’s obvious that these guys are serious musicians with a well-honed pop sensibility.

Produced by the band, mixed by Tom Lord-Alge (Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, The Cure) and featuring guest appearances from the likes of Golgol Bordello’s Yuri Lemeshev and Michael Fitzpatrick and Joe Karnes from Fitz and the Tantrums, ‘Anthem’ (like the title would

suggest), is a massive album that while still retaining those ubiquitous flashes of pop brilliance, is tempered with moments of pure rock and roll, neo-soul and classic RnB. Although, as Hanson explained, the band has been traversing a wide range of sonic territory for some time.

“We as a band have historically had to face the challenge of some people thinking that we produced just one sound from top to bottom, but, if you listen to ‘Middle of Nowhere’, sure, there are those poppy songs on there but there’s also a lot of moody and groovy things going on and some more aggressive stuff as well, and I think ‘Anthem’ has very similar qualities,” Issac said.

While the incessant radio airplay the band enjoyed early in their career may’ve died down somewhat in the ensuing years, their fanbase certainly hasn’t and, while Hanson said it was quite surreal to still receive such a fervent reaction from fans after all these years, it’s something he wouldn’t change for love nor money.

“Yes I am going deaf slowly,” Issac said.

“But it really does constantly surprise me that the reaction we get at shows has been consistently crazy for 17 years.

“It’s also cool to see crowds singing the words to all of our songs, not just the hits.

It’s something that we never, ever take for granted.”

Eurogliders can’t wait to see you! hirty years after the Eurogliders stormed into the Australian and international charts with ‘Heaven (Must Be There)’, the band are back touring and will play the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club on Saturday, June 21.

Grace Knight says her career kicked off in England in 1976 when she reached the semi-finals of a pub talent contest. That led to a gig in Dubai where she met Martha and the Vandellas who encouraged her to pursue a professional career.

migrated to Australia and got a gig on a cruise ship travelling from Southampton to Fremantle.

In Perth, she met Bernie Lynch and joined his band, then called Living Single.

When they found out another band had the same name, they decided to go for a name no-one else would have.

“Bernie put a heap of little pieces of paper with words on them in a hat. The first two pulled out were Euro and Glider, join ‘em together and away you go,” Ms Knight said.

She says the band struggled to build a following at first until they were hired to do an advertisement for a meat pie manufacturer.

But after years of success, the Eurogliders split up in 1989, and Knight was invited to sing on the soundtrack of the ABC series

This is the scenario facing Felicity in Christopher Durang’s black comedy ‘Why torture is wrong and the people who love them’ coming to the New Theatre in Newtown.

Felicity doesn’t know what has happened to her world. Is her new husband a terrorist? Is her father’s seemingly innocuous butterfly collection a front for his involvement in the shadow government? Is her mother insane or just a harmless, if obsessive, theatre buff?

And what’s with the minister who directs porn, the government operative with malfunctioning underwear and the secret agent who impersonates cartoon characters?

Felicity’s world is plunging into crisis

Director Melita Rowston says that while Durang wrote the play as a satire on the US War on Terror, she was struck by how relevant it was to

“Most of all, however, it’s great writing, full of snappy one-liners and cutting wit, acerbic and tremendously funny. Even as audiences pick up on the more serious subtext, they’re going to find it highly entertaining.”

The cast includes five actors making their New Theatre debuts: Peter Astridge, Romy Bartz, Ryan Gibson, Terry Karabelas, and Annie Schofield, plus Alice Livingstone (‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’ 2012, ‘Hay Fever’ 2013) and Ainslie McGlynn (‘Top Girls’ 2013).

While the issues canvassed in ‘Torture’ are serious and profound, Durang’s great accomplishment is to mine the absurdity to produce deeply comic situations.

Ten must Wake Up to themselves Channel Ten need a big slap in the face! Yes, I believe they got it wrong with the now axed ‘Wake Up’, because it was always going to be a tough sell trying to compete with ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Today’ but at least they tried something different. What I am angry about is the 150 people that now lose their jobs, not to mention the cuts to news bulletins too!

Still on Ten, and has anyone noticed their new daytime schedule looks a bit like a cross between a multi-channel with the amount of repeated programming and a cooking channel?

Since the departure of ‘Wake Up’, the Early and Morning News, Ten have resorted to airing five cooking related programs from 6am to 4pm.

Overkill?

I must say I was surprised to hear that ‘MasterChef Australia’ will return for a seventh series next year. This year the show’s been sitting third behind ‘The Voice’ and ‘House Rules’. I guess when Ten has nothing better to rely on, it has to continue with an old favourite.

The promos look pretty good, now Channel Seven has finally given us an airdate for new 80’s themed sitcom ‘The Goldbergs’. The new series will air with a double episode at 8.45pm on Wednesday, June 5 straight after ‘House Rules’. I’ll be interested to see if it is as funny as the trailer.

Lastly, a shout out to Channel Seven’s game show ‘Million Dollar Minute’ which I was heavily critical of when it first launched last year.

ydney Olympic has qualified for the inaugural FFA Cup with a convincing 4-2 win over Sydney United at Belmore Sports Ground last week.

The FFA Cup is a national knockout tournament similar to the English FA Cup. Over 600 clubs entered the qualifying tournaments.

Olympic have made it to the final 32 where the A-League clubs will join the competition.

From 1978 to 2004, Sydney Olympic were one of the top Australian soccer teams winning the National Soccer League twice. With the introduction of the A-League in 2004, Olympic moved into the NSW Premier League so the FFA Cup will mark the first time in 10 years, the club has been able to pit itself competitively against the A-League clubs.

The victory over United was hard fought.

Olympic leapt to a 2-0 lead by the 28th minute thanks to goals from Go Shirai and Harris Gaitatzis before United hit back with two goals in two minutes to Alec Urosevski before half time.

In the second half, a goalmouth scramble in the 53rd minute saw Michael Gaitatzis squeeze

the ball into the net to put Olympic back in front 3-2.

Just 10 minutes later Dimitri Hatzimouratis was brought on as a substitute and within a few minutes he had scored a goal worthy of being the match-winner. He launched a hard left footer into the top left corner of the goal, grazing the post on the way through.

After United’s comeback from two goals down in the first half, Olympic then shut the game down to ensure the victory and qualification for the FFA Cup. Olympic coach Grant Lee was very happy with the result. “All four goals were quality, although we conceded two poor ones,� he said. “You could see by the quality of team selections that we take this [the FFA Cup] seriously. We want to be part of something big like the FFA Cup.�

The first round of FFA Cup matches will take place in late July or early August.

Unfortunately, Olympic couldn’t back up in the Premier League on Sunday going down at home 0-1 to Bonnyrigg White Eagles.

However, they held on to sixth place on the ladder as nearest rivals Sydney United

Olympic and United will face off again this Sunday at Belmore in the next round of the Premier League.
