he WestConnex Delivery Authority has admitted to sending conflicting advice to residents this week regarding whether their properties would be acquired or not as part of the motorway’s construction.

A spokesperson said the Authority recently wrote to property owners with an update on the M4 East acquisitions and procurement.

“All advice in letters and phone calls to update property owners last week has been consistent and correct,” the spokesperson said.

“However regrettably incorrect emails were sent to 10 property owners due to a database error.”

The spokesperson said as soon as the error was realised WDA officers immediately emailed all 10 owners, apologising and offering to meet with all individuals to discuss their circumstances.

Labor candidate for Summer Hill Jo Haylen said the bungle was evidence of poor planning.

“There are still huge question marks about where it will be above and below ground and where the tunnel entry and exit points will be,” Ms Haylen said.

Ms Haylen and Opposition Leader John Robertson visited Haberfield this week where residents received the conflicting correspondence.

“This confusion has been caused by a Liberal Government hell bent on giving the impression they are building infrastructure – when the reality is there is no real plan for WestConnex,” Mr Robertson said.

The finding by a British jury this week that Australian entertainer Rolf Harris was guilty of indecently assaulting four girls is good news for the women brave enough to have spoken out and hopefully gives comfort to other people who have been victims of similar assaults.

I confess as a child, I was a big fan of Rolf Harris.

He sang songs, cracked jokes and did amazing paintings where he just appeared to splash random strokes of paint on a wall with no form to them until suddenly, with a single stroke, the painting came to life.

I never saw him in person but, if the opportunity had ever arisen, I would have wanted to. So I have great sympathy with those young girls who were fans, who went to see him wanting to be amazed, and left having been assaulted, confused about what had happened, thinking whether it was their fault, thinking whether they should tell someone.

Speaking outside the court, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Orchard thanked the women who had come forward for their bravery.

“I hope today’s guilty verdict will give them closure and help them to begin to move on with their lives,” DCI Orchard said.

“Rolf Harris has habitually denied any wrong doing forcing his victims to recount their ordeal in public. He committed many offences in plain sight of people as he thought his celebrity status placed him above the law.”

He also said Scotland Yard had received a number of new allegations and these were also being considered.

The gravity of child sexual assault was also demonstrated in Australia, when the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse handed down its interim report this week.

It revealed that on average, it took victims 22 years to disclose the abuse they had experienced as children and the lasting impacts on their lives is truly devastating.

“I have thought about this every single day of my life since it happened,” said one victim.

“The pain doesn’t go away and now that I’m older, it’s worse because I have more time to think about it,” said another.

“I didn’t plan to be 35, destitute, and living in jail by that age, divorced, businesses sort of broken down, mental illness, bipolar,” said a third.

This is doubtless one of the principal reasons why it took so long for both the victims speaking to the Royal Commission and the victims of Rolf Harris to come forward and air their concerns.

The Interim Report makes no recommendations but touches on the issue of justice for victims.

It says the Commission is looking at the current criminal justice system in each state and territory and is reviewing the manner in which allegations are investigated and offenders are tried and sentenced.

It says they are also looking at whether a national redress scheme could work and the effectiveness of civil litigation, including issues such as limitation periods, the proper defendant, vicarious liability and the level of damages.

The Commission is supposed to report by the end of 2015 but is asking the Government for an extension to its schedule. It says it has already had 96 days of public hearings where it heard from 219 witnesses plus more than 1,600 private sessions – with 1,000 people still waiting to attend a private session.

It would be great if all those people had an opportunity to tell their stories.

But on another, much more happy note, it was good to see young Nick Kyrgios reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon this week, beating world number one Rafael Nadal along the way.

It was good partly because it was unexpected.

Prior to this tournament, the 19-year-old Kyrgios had won three matches on the ATP Tour in just seven tournaments.

In reaching the quarter finals, he more than doubled his number of career wins and his total monetary winnings.

But it was also great to see him win and ultimately lose without petulance.

His comments about opponent Milos Raonic after the quarter final were gracious and, by all accounts, he is the sort of person who, while having self-confidence, doesn’t let success go to his head.

I’m a fan of both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the way they’ve played the game as much as their success.

If Nick Kyrgios can join them in that regard, it will be great to have an Aussie tennis star you can cheer on without fear of embarrassment. The future of tennis here does look bright.

Councils might get the boot Federal Govt reviewing composition of Sydney Airport Community Forum CHRIS CONNOLLY

he Federal Government is considering changes to the composition of the Sydney Airport Community Forum (SACF), which advises the Minister on aircraft noise issues and other matters related to the airport.

Changes being flagged include reducing the representation of local council and community members on the forum, increasing representation from airlines and state government departments, and broadening the Terms of Reference for the Forum.

Marrickville Council is demanding that local government and community members continue to play a role in the key forum that provides advice on aircraft noise over Sydney.

“Aircraft noise is an especially important issue for Marrickville Council – our residents are the most aircraft noise affected in Australia,” said Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen.

“You only have to stand on Railway Road in Sydenham with the deafening planes overhead and see the old front fences of the houses that were bulldozed when the third runway was built – surely this is reminder enough!”

Mayor Haylen said it was absurd to think that Marrickville Council and the local community would have a reduced voice on the Forum.

“The Sydney Airport Corporation Limited however has always been unhappy that the forum has a predominant focus on aircraft noise – so I’m not surprised that the airport has raised concerns about the membership of SACF,” she said.

“The Federal Government review of SACF has stated that including all the relevant local Councils ‘would make the Forum unwieldy’. They are looking at making the community representatives subject to short-term fixed appointments, and have expressed a preference to include more aviation, business and tourism representatives.

“It is clear that the Federal Government want to remove the local voices on SACF and dilute the purpose of the committee away from noise issues.”

The current membership includes 10 federal members of parliament, two state members, the mayors of six local government areas, two community representatives, two airline representatives and a representative of the Airport itself.

“Each year our call takers play a direct role in the safe delivery of hundreds of babies who catch their mothers unawares,” said NSW Ambulance Control Division Director Jamie Vernon.

arrickville Council has decided to introduce more short-term parking (two hours or less) around Marrickville Road and Illawarra Road.

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said Council had listened to residents, business owners, shoppers and commuters who said they wanted more parking near the shopping strips.

“We’ve responded with our new Marrickville Town Centre Parking Strategy that will deliver a better balance of parking space for everyone who lives and visits the town centre,” Mayor Haylen said.

“This is all about having more car spots closer to shops with a higher turnover – we want shoppers to be able to pull in and out quickly and get what they need. It makes picking up those few things for dinner quicker and helps our local main street businesses thrive.”

Councillor Victor Macri, who has a business on Marrickville Road and is a member of the Marrickville Chamber of Commerce, said the Parking Strategy would be good for both businesses and residents.

“We’ve managed to maximise the park-

She said Council will also further investigate improving the useability of the Frampton Avenue West Car Park, and parking on Arthur Street, Central Avenue, Leofrene Avenue, Fernbank Street and Schwebel Street.

Council developed the strategy from feedback gathered from 4,700 households and a community workshop.

Council’s precinct parking strategies cover Lewisham, Sydenham, NewtownEnmore, Tempe and now Marrickville Town Centre.

I

n a world full of preconceptions based on gender, race and sexual preference, author Michael El-Bacha challenges a number of them in his book Oh My God! Am I Alright?.

Mr El-Bacha says growing up he seemed like any ‘typical’ Lebanese boy with a taste for “football, fast cars and chicky babes” but he knew he was different and his strict Lebanese Christian parents also had their suspicions, so sent him off to Lebanon at age 19 to marry his cousin.

“I was forced into a marriage because I believe they knew I was gay and before I had the chance to discover who I was, they thought they’d marry me off,” he said.

“I was 19-years-old fresh from high school and we were taught to respect our elders and parents with no questions asked.”

The marriage produced a son and while he describes parenthood as an amazing experience, he realised after a couple of years he could repress himself no longer and left his family for a life of sex and drugs. Eventually he met his first real love, started accepting himself and began to turn his life around.

turmoil that I was going through, I wouldn’t have lost myself in order to find myself,” he said.

He began to rebuild his relationships with his family.

“My son and I have a healthy, respectful and honest relationship. He is a true blessing,” he said.

It was more difficult for his parents and wife to come to terms with who he was but he feels he has made a lot of progress in that regard and he is now comfortable sharing his story more widely.

“I have personally faced and ultimately overcome many obstacles in my young life and I want to share my story because I know that others will identify with it,” he said.

“I want other men and women, in similar situations, to find hope that they too can reveal their true sexuality and live a guiltfree, happy life.”

He recently launched his book in Marrickville and although there was talk of a movie, he says the negotiations fell through when the powers that be in Hollywood insisted he change his nationality to Irish American, Italian or even Gypsy.

“I need to stay true to my roots and identity, so I declined,” he said.

Police snapshot Police make arrest over alleged nose biting incident

Man charged with child porn possession at Newtown cafe

A man has been arrested in Hurlstone Park over an alleged assault in Leichhardt last week.

About 5pm on Tuesday, June 24, a 37-yearold man had part of his nose bitten off at a unit complex on Norton Street.

Police from Leichhardt Local Area Command have been investigating the incident.

Shortly after 4pm last Thursday, June 26, police stopped a car in Hurlstone Park and arrested the 28-year-old driver.

Police also conducted a search warrant at the man’s home on nearby Acton Street.

The man was taken to Burwood Police Station, where he was charged with affray and cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent.

A 40-year-old man was arrested last Thursday, June 26 at a cafe in Newtown for alleged child abuse material offences. Late last year, investigators from the Sex Crimes Squad’s Child Exploitation Internet Unit were conducting covert investigations on an adult social networking site. Detectives will allege they observed the 40-year-old Manly man engaging in online conversations with an adult woman. During the conversations, the man arranged to meet the woman and her 13-year-old daughter for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity with both. A search warrant was executed at homes in Manly and Coogee. The man was charged with using a carriage service for child pornography material. He was granted conditional bail to appear at Newtown Court.

Man found in possession of knife in Dulwich Hill

Officers taken to hospital after being exposed to a gas

A 40-year-old man from Ultimo has been arrested and charged for possessing a prohibited weapon in public in Dulwich Hill this week.

About 12.20am on Monday, June 30, police observed the 40-year-old man to walk out onto oncoming traffic several times. Police stopped the male and moved him off the road for fear of his safety and that of local drivers.

Police then searched the man and located a knife in his possession on his body. The knife was seized and the man issued with a Criminal Infringement Notice.

The man is due to attend Newtown Local Court on Tuesday, August 12.

Three police officers have been hospitalised after they were exposed to a gas while looking for two young people in a stormwater tunnel at Glebe last weekend.

About 2.30pm on Saturday June 28, police attended a stormwater tunnel on Wigram Road, following reports of graffiti.

Upon arrival they saw two young people run into the tunnel and followed them inside.

However, they lost sight of them when they reached the Parramatta Road exit.

They searched a closed maintenance room; where they were exposed to a gas, believed to be hydrogen sulphide.

Two female officers and one male officer were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

ot on the heels of a power blackout last week that caused widespread chaos at Sydney Airport, the Airport and the NSW Government have announced they are jointly investing almost $500 million to improve traffic flow in and around Sydney Airport, including roadworks and a new bus station to encourage greater use of public transport.

NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay said the Government is building more than $282 million in road projects around the airport precinct, primarily around General Holmes Drive and Marsh Street.

This funding will include the $40 million from the Federal Government, for WestConnex Enabling Works and other projects to address pinch points.

“Our package of works including the WestConnex Enabling Works will minimise congestion through the provision of direct and improved access to and from the new motorway from the airport and port precincts,” Minister Gay said.

“The Enabling Works are already full steam ahead, with community consultation and pre-construction work such as geotechnical drilling already underway.”

Sydney Airport is also proposing road-

works including a new access road at the domestic terminals to reduce congestion, a new city exit at the international terminal to improve traffic flow there, as well as the ground transport interchange which will accommodate buses and coaches, and a 430-room hotel.

Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said the key priority is to improve the passenger and airport user experience, with more than 150,000 travelling to and from the airport every day.

“These works will dramatically improve traffic flow around the airport, with our traffic models showing intersections clearing within most traffic light cycles and improvements in travel times,” Ms Mather said.

“We’ve listened to our passengers and are working to make it easier to travel to the airport, whether by car or public transport.”

She said there is potential for some disruption over the three-year construction period. A preliminary draft major development plan for the works at the domestic terminal is on public exhibition until 22 September and can be found at www.sydneyairport.com.au.

“We’re committed to consulting with the community and stakeholders on our plan and keeping them informed throughout the improvement works,” Ms Mather said.

10 Three stations to undergo deep clean, refresh

ewtown, St Peters and Sydenham Stations are all set for a deep clean and overhaul of facilities as part of the Station Refresh program.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian announced a $33 million expansion of the program, adding another 28 of the busiest hubs across the network.

“I’m very pleased the deep clean and upgrade of 19 stations outlined earlier this year will be largely completed by the end of July so that customers can enjoy the benefit of cleaner, modern-looking facilities,” Minister Berejiklian said.

“Our customers want safe, reliable, clean, air-conditioned trains and modern stations, which are easily accessible and we are delivering.”

She said the upgrade will be completed by the end of 2014, and shows that customers using the system right across the network are now seeing ongoing benefits of the setting up of Sydney Trains a year ago.

She described the former Railcorp as inefficient and stifled with endless bureaucracy that was not delivering anything close to the standards customers expect.

“After a lot of hard work behind the

scenes, we introduced a new, modern organisation a year ago that is now putting the customer first, and we now have a workforce that is proud to say they work at Sydney Trains,” Minister Berejiklian said.

In the past 12 months she said significant improvements have been delivered to rail customers including meeting tough new punctuality targets, delivery of more than 1,000 extra weekly services, and brand new air-conditioned trains.

“Our new timetable reduced journey times for thousands of customers travelling longer distances, provided frequent turn-up-and-go or clock-face services at many stations, improved connections with buses and ferries and was simpler and easier for customers to understand,” Minister Berejiklian said.

Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins, who joined Sydney Trains from the London Underground a year ago, said the first 12 months of the organisation had also seen a significant turnaround in attitude and culture by staff.

“We have come a long way in the first year, but really we have only just started the modernisation of this organisation and we will continue to roll out our improvement programs including the extra focus on customer service, major upgrade of stations and refreshing of our busiest hubs,” Mr Collins said.

ental health is very common with statistics showing that up to 45 per cent of the population experience some form of mental illness at some point in their lives.

Connecting with other people in the community is an effective way of managing some of the negative feelings associated with the illness.

That’s why the Sydney Local Health District is hosting a ‘Living in the Community Forum’ next month, to help build those connections.

Sarah de Graaff was a recent participant in the Forum and says she understands the feelings of loneliness and isolation that can accompany mental health issues, but also the difference that human connection and support can make to a person’s mental state.

“One of the best tools for recovery is community, getting people together to learn and share is a great thing,” Ms de Graaff said.

“Making connections with other people during difficult times made all the difference.”

She said that she was now thriving with

in the Community Forum’ for more than a decade, with more than 100 people attending each year to learn more about mental health and share support.

Peer support worker Peter Schaecken said the free forum was open to anyone living with mental health issues, their friends, families, carers and health workers.

“Mental health issues are common with almost half of all Australians experiencing a mental health problem in their life,” Mr Schaecken said.

“The forum helps provide some of the support and encouragement people might use to support their recovery and emphasises the importance of relationships for recovery.”

He said that all relationships were important for recovery including those with friends, family and significant others and the ‘Living in the Community Forum’ encourages participants to really think about the importance of these relationships and foster hope that recovery is possible.

The next Living in the Community Forum will take place at Glebe Town Hall from 10.30am to 3.30pm on Friday, August 1. To book call 9378 1199.

Life made easier for injured workers

he NSW Government has made changes to its controversial Workers Compensation Scheme which should make life easier for injured workers returning to work. But with the next state election now less than nine months away, both sides of politics are pointing the finger at each other.

Minister for Finance and Services Dominic Perrottet said the Government was committed to fixing the Workers Compensation scheme to make it both fair and sustainable.

“Labor left the scheme in a mess with a $4.1 billion black hole, businesses facing premium rises of up to 28 per cent and 12,000 jobs at risk,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Now that we have pulled the scheme out of Labor’s deficit and returned it to surplus, we are in a position to better support the State’s workers.”

Shadow Minister for Finance and Services Peter Primrose said the Government used a temporary deficit in the workers compensation scheme caused by the global financial crisis as an excuse to rip away support for people injured in the workplace, including people with amputations, mental health disorders, and nerve and spinal damage.

“By reversing these cuts to benefits for some of those with amputations and those needing hearing aids, the Liberals have admitted they had gone too far and placed these people in needless stress and financial difficulties for no good reason at all,” Mr Primrose said.

“PricewaterhouseCoopers confirmed that following the end of the GFC, the scheme would have been on a trajectory to full funding without the cruel cuts the Liberals made in 2012.”

The latest changes being made include ensuring injured workers have continued access to hearing aids, prostheses and home and vehicle modifications and related treatment until retirement age.

The Government is also extending medical benefits for workers with ‘whole person impairment’ until retirement age; and workers injured in the 12 months before retirement age will have the same entitlements as those who were injured at or after retirement age.

Workers will continue to be eligible for weekly benefits until a disputed work capacity assessment has been resolved; and if an initial surgery requires a second surgery falling outside 12 month medical cap, workers will still have entitlements.

Minister Perrottet said the changes will increase Scheme liabilities by about $280 million.

Warsaw in Poland is claiming title to having the world’s narrowest house – it’s just 72cm at its narrowest point and 122cm at its widest, and is jammed into an alleyway between two huge commercial buildings in Warsaw’s once Jewish Ghetto district.

Architect Jakub Szczesny designed the home as part of a cultural event supported by the City Council, propping it on legs as an “elevated insert” between its imposing neighbours.

Access is by way of a stairway that leads direct into a diminutive kitchen with adjoining bathroom and ensuite, and from the kitchen a ladder goes up to a bedroom just big enough for a wall-

to-wall single bed and a desk, while a 45-degree sloping glass roof allows light into the place (that otherwise has only one tiny window).

And after trying to envisage just who could live in such seemingly impossible confinement, and deciding that it would be someone who liked to spend time alone, the house is being provided free to visiting writers doing research work in Warsaw.

Originally intending to keep the house for just two years as somewhat of a curiosity and publicity-generator, the Council says that if sufficient writers want to visit Warsaw, they may keep “the world’s narrowest house” permanently.

ew research shows young people would consider buying a property with a friend or family member if it meant getting their foot on the property ladder.

The research commissioned by Slater & Gordon found more than a third of 18 to 24-year-olds, and just under a quarter of 25 to 34-year-olds, would consider buying a property with a friend.

Slater & Gordon Conveyancing Works Solicitor Robert Kern said young people were feeling the squeeze when it came to property prices, particularly in places like the Inner West.

“Capital city prices increased by 10.9 per cent between March 2013 and March 2014 and recently the International Monetary Fund warned Australian homes were the third most expensive of 24 countries,” Mr Kern said.

“So it’s no surprise young people are willing to consider buying a property with someone other than a partner to get their foot in the door.”

The research also showed that those aged 45-years plus were far less likely to consider buying with a friend but far more likely to consider buying a property with a

family member other than a spouse.

“That more of the baby boomers would consider buying with a family member probably reflects the fact an increasing number of parents recognise their children are fast being priced out of the market and are willing to help them out,” Mr Kern said.

He said buying with friends or family members was becoming more common, but both scenarios could have drawbacks and it was important that a contract provides for any change in circumstances.

“Down the track it’s quite possible one of the owners will want to sell or can’t cover the mortgage, or even just wants out of the contract,” he said.

“That’s why it’s important you consider all of the potential scenarios up front and actually have mechanisms for one or both of the parties exiting the contract written into it. Without them, the worst case scenario is that the Supreme Court will step in and appoint an independent trustee. This can be a stressful, long and expensive process.”

Buying a property with family members can also present problems where common law rules apply and he said, in disputes between parents and children, the courts can find that it is reasonable to assume the property was a ‘gift’ from the parents.

Action plan against violence The Federal Government has launched its Second Action Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children to send a strong message that violence is reprehensible.

“The Commonwealth Government has allocated more than $100 million over the next four years to support the Second Action Plan. These proposals have the support of all States and Territories across Australia,” Prime Minister Tony Abbott said last week.

The new initiatives the Australian Government is funding to support the

Second Action Plan include: $3.3 million for CrimTrac to develop and test a prototype for a National Domestic Violence Order (DVO) Scheme, to strengthen the identification and enforcement of DVOs across state and territory borders.

There is also $1.7 million for the Australian Bureau of Statistics to build a more consistent basis from which to gather, analyse and use data on all aspects of violence against women and their children. And there’s $1 million for 1800RESPECT, Australia’s first national telephone counselling service.

rban Rec is looking for dodgeball teams, or players interested in joining a team, for the Future Dodgeball Festival and Tournament to be held in Marrickville next Sunday, July 13.

Dodgeball, for the unfamiliar, involves two teams of six players throwing eightinch foam balls at each other.

If you get hit, you’re out. Once all players on a team are eliminated, the other team gets a point and everyone comes back on court for the next set.

The sport began as a game for school children in America but following the release of the 2004 movie ‘Dodgeball’ starring Vince Vaughan and Ben Stiller, it developed a cult following among high school and college students.

The World Dodgeball Federation was founded in 2011 and the inaugural world championships in 2012 saw Hong Kong take the men’s title and USA the women’s.

This year’s world championships will be held in Hong Kong.

Urban Rec has been hosting a Dodgeball league in Marrickville for the past few years, and is hoping the Future Dodgeball Festival and Tournament will become an

annual event, attracting competitors from all across Sydney.

The tone of the day is all about having fun. Teams are even encouraged to dress up and there will be prizes for best dressed.

Hanoi in Vietnam is one of the must see cities in Asia, with French influences and distinct local cultural traditions is complete without a visit to Ba Dinh Square, location of both the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the ultra-modernistic and very arty Ho Chi Minh Museum.

It’s this shambolic sense of organised chaos that in part makes Hanoi one of the world’s greatest cities.

Try crossing the street and you soon realise just how frenetic life here can be, yet at the same time the Vietnamese capital also has a wonderful charm and poise about it – somehow retaining a French ambience from colonial days that melds with the local flavours to create a heady cocktail.

Not that the French influence was always, or even mostly, a benign thing in Vietnam. Visit Hanoi’s centrally-located one-time Hoa Lo Prison, now a museum complete with original blood-thirsty guillotines, and you realise how fervently the French liked to impose their colonial rule.

colour, eye lashes and even eye colour can vary in our perceptions of beauty

The question, ‘what makes a person beautiful?’ is often discussed, maybe not on a casual or every day basis but it is certainly one that has been pondered by the philosophical, intellectual, curious and average person throughout the ages.

An answer is yet to be found and though many have claimed their definition of beauty is best, but ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ seems as correct an answer as we’ll ever get.

One thing that I have never really thought about is the different perceptions of beauty across the globe – does where we live have anything to do with what we consider to be beautiful.

An American Journalist, Esther Honig, did consider this question and set out on a mission to discover if beauty is a global perception or one that differs from country to country.

Esther sent a raw image of herself to people all around the world – after reading this I was already impressed... I’d never have the guts to send a makeup-less photo to someone I didn’t know – asking them to photo-shop the image... the only request she gave was “make me beautiful”.

Gradually the photoshoppers, both professional and amateur, began to send back photos of her that they had ‘beautified’ according to their own perceptions.

The results from country to country can only be described as very different, which was not what I was expecting at all.

In the photo sent back to Esther from Argentina, her skin had been paled, her lips pinked, she was sporting thick eyelashes and well manicured eyebrows.

She was sporting a colourful Hijab in the photo sent from Morocco and in the one from America, her hair had been removed from a bun, and replaced with long, flowing brown hair, her eyes were changed in shape and her face had been slimmed down.

The photo sent back to Esther from Australia is not quite what I would have said is a typical Australian perception of beauty but it was along those lines.

I don’t know what I was expecting to see when I came across the images but I really was amazed that different countries have such different perceptions.

With the last week proving more than ever that we’re really in winter now, it’s a good time to think about stimulating our pets as well as ourselves with some indoor activities that can be mutually enjoyable.

‘Walk around’ is another trick that can be taught fairly easily.

Attach a lead to a flat collar and guide your pet around your feet while offering a treat after each revolution. After practising this 20 or so times, she should respond without the guidance of a leash.

This requires two people to work properly. Both people fill up their pockets with tasty treats. Start by standing a couple of metres apart. One partner calls your pet’s name and offers treats instantly when she comes. Then the other partner calls your pet’s name and so on.

Gradually increase the distance and locate yourselves in other rooms to make your pet run farther. You can combine this with ‘hide and seek’ to make the game more of a challenge for your dog.

Not only is this great for burning energy but it also encourages a strong recall response from your dog.

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The number of overweight children in Australia has doubled in recent years, with a quarter of children considered overweight or obese; and alarmingly it seems like some children are stressing themselves out about it and taking matters into their own hands.

A study shows kids as young as eight are dissatisfied with their bodies. And the majority of 10- and 11-year-olds are trying to control their weight. The report by the Australian Institute of Family Studies examined more than 4,000 children around the country. It found more than half of all the children they spoke to wanted a body size a bit thinner than the average.

A large number of eight to nine-year-old boys and girls were dissatisfied with their body size with many children wanting to be thinner than the average body size.

Why would an eight-year-old feel fat? It makes me wonder about the external influences our kids are subjected to from things like media ads, movies, tiny waisted barbie dolls or the hugely muscled action figures.

Kids are sadly being guided on what is a ‘normal’ body type.

Interestingly another study from the University of Oregon showed the more your kids know about fast food brands the more likely they are to be overweight. The relationship between brand knowledge and body mass index (BMI) is “quite robust” says the report.

Researchers tested children aged three to five on their knowledge of various brands, including their ability to identify fast food logos and found that those who could identify them the most tended to have higher BMIs. Kids take in information constantly and can have difficulty separating fact from fiction. If you’re not influencing the decisions and information your child learns and acts upon, there are plenty of companies too happy to help them make their mind up, and profit beats health on their priority list.

But while that seems to be the release that gets the most airplay for the Fremantle based trio it’s their second studio album ‘A Song is a City’ – which celebrates it’s 10th anniversary this year – that lead singer Kav Temperley believes holds the most sentimentality for the band’s fans.

“People have lots of very personal experiences with that record. When I’m talking to people everyone’s always like ‘aww A Song is a City was my album’,” Temperley said.

With this in mind the singer/songwriter is heading out on a three month solo acoustic tour across Australia to play tracks from the band’s 2004 album including ‘From The Sea’, ‘Older Than You’ and ‘Smoke’. But audiences will get more than just your usual gig experience.

“When I worked out it was 10 freaking years since the album came out I just thought it was a good opportunity to go out and just play the songs and tell a lot of the stories as well,” Temperley said.

“Some of those stories were really hard to tell back in the day, because it involved people and people we’d done business

KAV TEMPERLEY SOCIAL CLUB SATURDAY, JULY 19 with and so on, so it was kind of inappropriate but now it’s like, it’s been a few years and no one really cares any more.”

While Temperley embarks on his solo tour, band mates Stu MacLeod and Joel Quartermain are having a

few months off and are taking on their own projects.

For MacLeod that means building recording studios while Quartermain’s current focus is recording young musicians in the band’s studio in Fremantle.

“Everyone’s kind of got their fingers in a few different pies. I’m still doing exactly the same thing as I was doing before,” Temperley said laughing.

Not that he’s complaining. The self confessed ‘tragic’ when it comes to live music sees this tour as the perfect project to take on solo.

“As far as telling stories and doing that kind of thing, if it’s just one person with an acoustic guitar just singing it lends itself to that a lot more,” he said.

“You know you can sit down, and part of the performance can be the stories as much as they can be about the songs,” Temperley said.

As well as offering a night of music and storytelling, audiences will also receive an acoustic EP recorded by Temperley, covering all the songs that inspired him during the making of ‘A Song is a City’, including Bill Withers’ ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ which Temperley saw on ‘Rage’ late one night.

“Just hearing him play and sing it, I was like ‘sh**, that’s freaking amazing!’ And so I woke up the next day and I was walking into Fremantle to do my lyric writing and stuff and I just started to think about my own story and came back and just did my kind of version of ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ which ended up becoming the title track to the album ‘A Song Is A City’.’’

Kav Temperley will be performing at the Newtown Social Club in Newtown on Saturday, July 19. Doors open at 8pm.

ndie music darlings Something for Kate are celebrating 20 years in the industry with a re-release of their back catalogue and a show at the Enmore Theatre next Saturday,

July 12.

Singer/guitarist Paul Dempsey, drummer Clint Hyndman and bass player Julian Carroll formed Something for Kate in Melbourne in 1994 when they were all teenagers. Stephanie Ashworth took over on bass in 1998 and the line-up has been consistent ever since then.

Success came quickly for the band.

Their first full album ‘Elsewhere for Eight Minutes’ came close to platinum sales and the single ‘Captain (Million miles an hour)’ made it into to the Triple J Hottest 100 for 1997.

Their next album ‘Beautiful Sharks’

debuted at number eight in the ARIA charts and the single ‘Electricity’ reached number 39.

In 2001, they released ‘Echolalia’, arguably their best album featuring songs such as ‘Monsters’, ‘Three Dimensions’, ‘Twenty Years’ and ‘Say Something’.

By the time of their fourth album ‘The Official Fiction’ in 2003, Something for Kate were supporting David Bowie on his Australian tour.

The album hit the top of the Australian charts and spawned the singles, ‘Deja vu’, ‘Song for A Sleepwalker’, ‘Best Weapon’ and ‘Moving Right Along’.

The band recorded two more original albums, 2006’s ‘Desert Nights’ and, after a brief hiatus, ‘Leave Your Soul to Science’ in 2012. Over their career, they have been nominated for 16 ARIA Awards and had

The show’s producer and resident magician Belladonna Brabazon said many of the performers live in the Inner West.

“Our juggler Christopher Hawkins is part of the Flamewater Circus Troupe and runs a circus stall at the local markets,” Ms Brabazon said.

Other local performers include the brother and sister cabaret duo Harry and Liv, celebrated drag king Antonio Mantonio as well as Cherry Lush, the first burlesque performer to perform on the ice in Antarctica.

“Yes, she said it was very cold,” Ms Brabazon said.

“A lot of our acts house-share so most of them have been either a Newtown or Marrickville local at some point in time.

Other performers include Blaze RazorKiss, who takes the stage as an expert belly dancer, a sensual burlesque artist and a glamorous model.

“You can follow Blaze on a journey to the orient and let her tantalise and

seduce you with her unique style, serpentine movement and ethnic rhythms.”

From the Bohemian backstreets of Brunswick in Melbourne, The Amazing Ab Brothers, Mitchell Pitch and Skipp Christiansen, will also be right at home in Marrickville.

“Combining the strength of the circus strongman with the dexterity of the Gravity Warriors the pair will astound and amaze with their impressive array of circus and sideshow skills including their Bed of Nails hand-balancing act and entertain with their irreverent and cheeky humour,” she said.

Joining Belladonna Brabazon in performing magic tricks will be her partner Terence Brabazon, Anthony Dillon and Queensland’s international man of mystery Daz Buckley.

Also gracing the stage will be fire eater Sofonda Blackmen, pocket rocket Casey Lynn, the foxy miss Ginger Foxx, the Sultry and sensual Slu Taris and industry’s freshest new ladies of lust and tease Isla View, Euphoriah Fox and Lolita Heart.

One of my favourite shows of all time is back on our screens from next week – ‘Full House’. Yep, that awesome family comedy featuring John Stamos, Bob Saget and of course, the Olsen twins begins on Foxtel’s 111 Greats this Monday at 3.30pm.

To prove how obsessed with this show I am: I have met the twins and John Stamos and own the entire DVD set.

Channel Ten has picked up three new FOX shows they are hoping will bring back viewers. ‘Backstrom’ centres on a detective who is brought back from exile to run the Portland Police Bureau SCU; ‘Empire’ centres on the head of a music empire whose three sons and ex-wife battle for his throne; and ‘Complications’ is a medical drama from the creator of ‘Burn Notice’.

Still on Ten, and their new game show ‘Family Feud’ will premiere at 6pm on Monday, July 14. Hosted by Grant Denyer, ‘Family Feud’ will give people an alternative to the ‘news overload’ on the other networks. Ten will also offer a play-along game on Beamly.

Australian TV legend Bert Newton’s contract with Channel Nine has expired. Nine are saying it was Newton’s choice not to renew but others are saying it was his six figure salary that scared Nine bosses away. Old Bert hasn’t been seen on our screens in years.

A huge happy birthday to ‘Home and Away’ star Ray Meagher who turns 70 today. Meagher, who plays the lovable Alf Stewart, has been on the show ever since it began in 1988 and has revealed he has no plans to retire anytime soon. That’s flamin’ awesome news for long time fans!

ADULT SERVICES A bit of history about Kings Court Massage by Big John: Back in the 1990s massage places like Kings Court were illegal but at the same time they were prolific with most suburbs having at least one brothel and one massage place. They were usually upstairs in older strip shopping centres and in some cases suburban houses in low income areas. Some were very well decked out in quality streets in Kings Cross and even in the City.

Some, like our place, were quite large and famous.

We needed to advertise and we looked around at likely places. We were unable to get into the Australian version of Playboy which we thought represented our style, however we were approached by Australian Penthouse and soon developed a relationship that has lasted until this day. We were making Kings Court to be the largest of all the massage places and because we didn’t do full service we wanted to look different to those other places. It was decided to try some cartoon advertising.

I recalled that as a child I had read Mandrake Comics in the last page of the Woman’s Weekly and I figured that the best place to have cartoon advertising was on the inside back cover so people could easily find us in the same place each time.

So we began. The concept was to let people know about us and try to influence them that we were providing “harmless fun for men.” These cartoons were very good for that. We also wanted to make the cartoons have stories so that each time the readers would have a look to see what was happening next.

This kind of colour advertising was very expensive to create but we were able to find a talented cartoonist and I wrote the stories and learned how to use Quark Express to make the ads on my Mac computer. We found a place to make the separations and do the proofs. In those days desk top publishing was just beginning and the files had to be delivered on Zip Disks that were mailed back to us. Later on, that changed to CDs which were cheap enough to be discarded. Today this advert is produced as a PDF and sent off by email.

he draw for the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup will see Sydney Olympic travel all the way to... Manly.

The other 15 games in the opening round see teams travelling interstate but Olympic just have to cross the harbour to take on fellow NSW National Premier League club Manly United.

The match will take place on the opening night of the competition, Tuesday, July 29 along with three other games. Fox Sports will broadcast the clash between Broadmeadow Magic and Brisbane Strikers live from Newcastle with crosses to the other games that evening: Manly v Olympic, South Springvale (Vic) v South Cardiff (NSW) and Melbourne Knights (Vic) v Olympic FC (Qld).

These include Adelaide City, Blacktown City, Brisbane Strikers, Hakoah Sydney City, Melbourne Knights, Parramatta FC, South Coast Wolves, Sydney Olympic and Sydney United.

At the conclusion of the Round of 32 matches, another draw will be conducted to determine the Round of 16 fixtures.
