SW Roads Minister Duncan Gay announced a revised plan for the WestConnex motorway this week which will see an additional tunnel built connecting it to the Anzac Bridge at Rozelle. At the same time, anti-WestConnex campaigners drew parallels between the project and Melbourne’s East-West Link which was a major factor in the Victorian election result last weekend.

Minister Gay said Stage 3 of the WestConnex, which will connect the extended M5 at St Peters with the extended M4 at Haberfield, will itself be extended through to Rozelle where it will ultimately be able to connect with the Western Harbour Tunnel running from there to Lane Cove.

Shadow Minister for Roads Michael Daley criticised the announcement saying it was the fifth major change to the route and in the process the cost of the project had doubled to $20 billion before a single sod has been turned in construction.

“How can motorists in Sydney have any faith in the Liberals’ grandiose infrastructure promises when they can’t control the cost of their flagship road project or even start construction of it as they promised before the last election?” Mr Daley said.

Meanwhile in St Peters, the WestConnex Action Group this week gathered at the corner of St Peters St and Campbell St on Roads and Maritime Services land which they believe will be used for an exhaust stack for the motorway tunnel.

Another protest group announced a street festival and protest in St Peters on December 13.

Heartbreaking scenes as Australia farewells Phillip Hughes

The images of grieving family and friends at the funeral of cricketer Phil Hughes this week were heartbreaking.

A fortnight ago he was being touted as a possible replacement for injured captain Michael Clarke in the first test against India which should have started in Brisbane this week.

Now the cricket schedule has been thrown into chaos and there is genuine doubt over how the Australian team will perform in the wake of the tragedy.

Last summer, most Australian cricket fans revelled in the sight of Mitchell Johnson terrorising the English batsmen with aggressive fast bowling.

We also had a bit of a giggle when pompous British media personality Piers Morgan lambasted the English team and volunteered to face up to Brett Lee to show how it’s done.

He was hit repeatedly, suffering a broken rib as a result.

At the time New Zealand fast bowling great Richard Hadlee was a lone voice against the display, writing in the Sunday Star Times in New Zealand that Lee could have killed Morgan.

“It was clear that Morgan could not bat or defend himself against Lee’s pace and intimidation – this was an unfair and one-sided contest that could have had severe consequences. Sadly, in the past batsmen have died from receiving blows to the body,” Hadlee wrote.

“I only hope that Brett takes a few minutes to reflect on his stupidity – this was a brain explosion of the highest order – it was a deliberate attempt to hit, injure, hurt and maim his opponent that I viewed as a form of grievous bodily harm or a human assault that could have proved fatal. Morgan, aged 48, was hit four times on the body and if he was hit on the head or across the heart the result could have been devastating.”

Hadlee was doubtless remembering a test match in 1975 when English quick Peter Lever struck New Zealand tailender Ewen Chatfield in the head, fracturing his skull and causing his heart to stop.

He was resuscitated and eventually went on to play another 40 odd test matches.

However, it prompted a discussion at the time about the legitimacy of bouncers in the game. It was a time when Australians Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee were at the heights of their powers as menacing fast bowlers and the West Indians were developing a quartet of intimidatory

quicks. Nothing changed then although it was only a couple of years later that helmets started being worn in the game.

In 1988, West Indian Phil Simmons was struck in the head by English bowler David Lawrence.

Like Chatfield, his heart stopped and he required resuscitation as well as emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. Also like Chatfield, Simmons recovered and played cricket again.

Sadly, Phil Hughes was not so lucky.

It is clear that batsmen, even with all their padding and helmets, are not completely protected from a cricket ball bowled at high speed. Doubtless, there will be renewed discussion about changing the rules regarding intimidatory bowling.

What does it mean for the game as it stands? Will aggressive fast bowlers like Mitchell Johnson or South Africa’s Dale Steyn continue to intimidate batsmen in the same way? Will batsmen be a bit more nervous facing up to them? Will fans continue to celebrate bouncers?

One person I feel for is the bowler, Shaun Abbott.

Both Peter Lever and David Lawrence were devastated after the injuries they caused Chatfield and Simmons respectively.

I heard Lawrence questioning whether Abbott would ever be able to play cricket again. I hope he doesn’t feel that pressure and is able to return to top-level cricket. I’m pleased that everyone in the cricket world, including Hughes’ family, have been quick to absolve Abbott of any blame and it was good that he turned up to the funeral despite the barrage of media attention on him when he did.

I also feel for Phil Hughes’ family and network of friends.

They were clearly terribly proud of him and devastated by his loss, as were his team mates.

Australian captain Michael Clarke spoke movingly at the funeral in Macksville.

“Is this what indigenous Australians believe about a person’s spirit being connected to the land upon which they walk?” Clarke said.

“If so, I know they’re right about the SCG. His spirit has touched it, and it will forever be a sacred ground for me. I can feel his presence there and I can see how he’s touched so many people around the world.”

s industry continues to migrate away from Marrickville and the community grapples with how former industrial land should be used into the future, former deputy mayor Cr Rosana Tyler believes there are lessons to be learnt from American cities which are going through a similar process.

Cr Tyler recently went on the Future Studies Program run by Professor Edward Blakely from the United States Studies Centre at Sydney University.

The program involved representatives of six NSW councils including either the mayor or deputy mayor and senior planning staff.

They had to propose a local project they were currently working on and were then paired with an American local government addressing similar problems.

Marrickville’s project was the conversion of the industrial area near Sydenham station into an arts precinct.

They were paired with Brooklyn in New York which is currently converting a disused naval dockyard into an arts centre.

“It’s got enormous warehouses and slipways but it just sat there doing nothing,

the dockyards and Sydenham, particularly regarding how visually run down they looked and things that can be done to make an area more inviting.

“One of the things we learnt on the trip was to make an impression as you come in and the impression that you get as you come in to Sydenham is currently, oh my gosh, so we want to green it up a little bit,” she said.

Cr Tyler admits she approached the trip with some scepticism regarding the value of local councillors undertaking overseas study trips but came away with a new insight into local issues.

“When I got there, we were seeing things you don’t see if you go on holiday,” she said.

“We were talking to the city officials, mayors, deputy mayors and planning officers, what their project was, how they had got around the problems with their project, what our project was, did they have any ideas.”

She still believes in Council’s policy of councillors paying their own way on these trips, which she did, but feels criticism of such trips as junkets is unwarranted given the amount of work done and the knowledge gained.

reens candidate for Newtown Jenny Leong says she will introduce a bill to get rid of police drug sniffer dogs if she is

elected.

Speaking at a community meeting in Redfern this week, Ms Leong described the General Police Drug Dog program as “state sanctioned harassment and intimidation on public transport, in our pubs and clubs, and at festivals”.

She said people are 6.5 times more likely to be searched at Redfern Station than at Central and Redfern had the highest false positive rate for sniffer dog indications of any local police area.

“As a former human rights campaigner with Amnesty International, I am acutely aware of the how governments use police powers to implement regressive agendas and violate the rights of their citizens,” Ms Leong said.

“We need to see evidence-based policing in NSW that is focused on serving and protecting the needs of the community, not an enforcement agency which contributes to the intimidation, mistrust and discrimination already faced by marginalised groups.”

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Stuart Ayres said the Government supports the NSW Police Force and its use of drug detection dogs as a tool to rid our streets and public transport system of drug crime.

“Police use drug detection dogs when they have intelligence that shows drug crime is occurring,” Minister Ayres said.

“Drug dogs correctly detect the odours of current or recent drug contact. When they see police dogs approaching, many people will throw their drugs away before they are searched. In such situations, dogs can still detect the scent on them.”

ydney Airport has unveiled a new look for its Airport Ambassadors with new uniforms and iPad minis to help them assist passengers with up to date airport and flight information.

Airport CEO Kerrie Mather said the ambassadors had been assisting visitors to the airport since 1999 and now included 130 volunteers working across the T1 and T2 terminals.

“We consulted our ambassadors and the airport community extensively on the

new uniforms and decided on blue jackets, which take inspiration from our beautiful harbour, blue skies and beaches and will ensure that they continue to stand out and are easy to find,” Ms Mather said.

“A key focus for the airport is growing tourism for Sydney, NSW and Australia and the assistance that our ambassadors provide to visitors, from helping them fill in departures cards to providing directions for taxis or the train, is an important part of this.”

She said 50 Mandarin-speaking Ambassadors will wear red uniforms to help cater to the growing number of Chinese tourists visiting Sydney.

he NSW Government has released its draft Parramatta Road Urban Renewal Strategy which proposes significant developments (up to 10,000 additional dwellings) in Camperdown, Leichhardt and Taverners Hill.

Planning Minister Pru Goward said it was a long-term project that would follow on from the completion of the WestConnex motorway which would hopefully reduce traffic volumes on Parramatta Road.

“The NSW Government is committed to considered, sensible revitalisation of this corridor, which has been an eyesore on our global city for too long,” Minister Goward said.

The draft strategy called New Parramatta Road suggests that with more road capacity in the corridor, “transport networks can be reshaped into an integrated transport system with more public transport options” and “residents will be encouraged to walk or cycle safely and conveniently to bus stops, rail stations and key destinations”.

Marrickville councillor Jo Haylen said the Government had been trying to keep the plans secret until after next March’s state election but were forced to release

them after a vote in the Legislative Council ordered them to do so.

She expressed concern that local councils might be stripped of their approvals power in the relevant areas.

The Renewal Project came up for discussion at last week’s Council meeting with the Mayor being invited to formally sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the NSW Government on the issue.

Eco-Transit co-convenor Mathew Hounsell spoke to the motion and called on Council to withdraw from the Memorandum of Understanding. He was supported by Greens councillor Max Phillips who questioned the feasibility of adding 6000 new dwellings into the Lewisham and Petersham areas when local roads such as Old Canterbury Road are jam packed.

Alison McLaren from Urban Growth NSW spoke in favour of Marrickville staying with the Memorandum of Understanding, arguing that Council staff brought a lot of local knowledge to the discussion and the end result would be better for local residents if Council stayed involved. The majority of councillors supported this although Mayor Mark Gardiner suggested she encourage the Minister to make the information flow a two-way process so they weren’t surprised by Ministerial announcements on the subject in the future.

Police snapshot Enmore: Man charged with aggravated robbery

Glebe: 43-year-old man suffers facial injuries in assault

Police have charged a man following an alleged attempted robbery in Enmore last Sunday. About 2am on Sunday, November 30, two attendants were working at a service station on Enmore Road when a man entered the store. The man allegedly assaulted one of the attendants and dragged him towards the security counter while demanding the other attendant open the cash register. He then allegedly threw a can of drink at the attendant behind the counter, hitting him in the arm.

The man fled the location empty handed.

About 3pm on Tuesday, December 2, a 25-year-old man contacted police. Officers attended an address in Darley Street, Newtown, and arrested the man. He was charged with aggravated robbery.

Police are investigating after a man was assaulted in Glebe last weekend.

Emergency services were called to an accommodation hotel on Broadway about 5pm on Sunday, November 30.

Upon arrival, they found a 43-year-old man who had sustained facial and other injuries.

Police have been told the man was in his room with some other people when he answered a knock at the door.

Four men pushed their way into the room.

Three began assaulting the 43-year-old, while the fourth ransacked the room.

They fled the scene with wallets, mobile phones and a notebook computer.

An ambulance transported the man to hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries.

Dulwich Hill: Mystery over Toyota thefts

Police unhappy with crowd at music festival

Four Toyota Aurion sedans were stolen within Dulwich Hill earlier this week. The four offences occurred between 6pm on Monday, December 1 and 8.45am on Tuesday, December 2. The locations targeted were Abergeldie Street, Consett Street and Williams Parade – all within Dulwich Hill. Two of the vehicles were stolen from Williams Parade. Each of the four sedans were reported as being locked and secured prior to their removal.

There have also been a number of vehicle windows smashed in the last few days.

Police are once again urging the public to ensure that valuables are not left in the vehicle within view of passersby.

Police are disappointed with the large number of revellers found in possession of prohibited drugs at the Stereosonic music festival last weekend at Sydney Olympic Park. A high-visibility police operation was in place. More than 81,000 revellers were in attendance throughout the festival. Officers searched more than 830 people over the two days. There were 196 people found in possession of prohibited drugs at the festival, including MDMA, cocaine, cannabis, GHB and Ketamine. Thirteen were charged with supply prohibited drug and 169 with possess prohibited drug.

Fourteen people also received cannabis cautions.

It’s organic heaven at new Petersham cafe

new cafe in Petersham is promising completely organic food from their juices to their cakes to their salads and ultimately to

pizza.

Organica in Crystal Street opened just last week and co-owner Raymond Grace believes it will be unique to the area.

“We’ve opened this place up because we live and breathe the healthy lifestyle and organic produce,” Mr Grace said.

“I personally had a digestion problem. I can’t have gluten. I’m not coeliac but my stomach gets upset. Ever since I went into the raw movement and the organic movement, I’ve noticed a massive difference in the way my food digests.”

He sings the praises of the acai berry which they use as the base in their Acai Super Food Bowl, topped with granola and a selection of fruits and berries.

“It’s probably the most amazing anti oxidant. It’s a berry from South America, the Amazon. It’s provides anti oxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin D. The Portuguese love it,” he said.

“We’ve also installed a five stage filtration system to purify the water and remove the chlorine as much as we can.

“We’re really proud of that, to put that small investment in the water just to provide that extra element of service,” Mr Grace said.

Raymond Grace says they still need to work through some issues with Marrickville Council so they can have furniture on the footpath and make the place look more inviting.

The next step will be adding personal training to the mix.

“We’re definitely trying to tie in the exercise part with the organic food and the cafe. Fitness and food go hand in hand.

They do their exercise, they come here, they have their acai plate with their green juice,” he said.

“The people from Petersham Town Hall have shown interest. We’ve also got someone who is a personal trainer that will be helping us do the boxercise, boot camp. We’re looking at doing that around 8 o’clock in the morning during weekdays and on weekends.”

he Art Seat in Newtown is currently showcasing a piece called ‘The Portal’ which brings together items and photos of people and organisations with a current or historical connection to the area.

Artist Pia Larsen said she has lived in the area for about 20 years and has seen a lot of change in that time.

“That was one of the questions I asked everybody, what were their projections for five or 10 years?” Ms Larsen said.

“Most people had the same rather dim view which was there would be fewer of these things, these sorts of organisations here, that it would be more like the eastern suburbs.”

She said the big problem was people being priced out of the area.

“This woman here, Karo, she’s one of those dynamos,” she said pointing at a photo on the artwork.

“She teaches yoga. She’s worked as a cook on the Sea Shepherd. She’s done everything, theatre, boxing, run workshops. But the rent is just too much of her income.”

Another interviewee was Natalie Gould from Gould’s Book Arcade who wondered how long she would be able to keep the store going for.

“At the time she was running for preselection for the new seat of Newtown,” Ms Larsen said.

“She was a declared Trotskyite which I

loved the idea of putting that in the public realm. She knew she wouldn’t win but she wanted to put those ideas out there and that interests me.”

Another person who wanted to remain anonymous provided old photos and letters from his family history.

“It turns out that his Nanna was a very strong matriarch,” she said.

“Two of her husbands drove the horsedrawn omnibuses from the front of Newtown Station to Parramatta. I think one of the husbands and another relative were killed crossing the tracks. Suddenly your mind goes back to another era of Newtown with cows and dairies and that sort of thing.”

Also woven into the panel are Sydney University, Reverse Garbage, local fashion designer Yoshi Jones and Newtown’s gay and lesbian community.

Former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam also formed part of the inspiration.

“Gough had to be in that. When I was finishing these he’d just died. I was listening to all the programs on Radio National about the times and the Commission for Human Relationships,” Ms Larsen said.

“Essentially it was asking all Australians to make a submission about anything.

That was the beginning of the change of opening up Australian society to the community.”

The Newtown Art Seat presents innovative contemporary art to the local community and provides artists and community groups with the opportunity to exhibit in public space.

he Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) avoided a Christmas grinch title by leaving interest rates on hold at its monthly meeting on Tuesday. It’s the 16th consecutive month that the cash rate has been left on hold, meaning there wasn’t one change to interest rates during 2014.

Mortgage Choice spokesperson, Jessica Darnbrough, said while the Reserve Bank indicated last week that it is in a position to cut interest rates again, the Board has obviously decided to err on the side of caution and leave the cash rate untouched this month at 2.5 per cent.

“It would appear that the Reserve Bank believes a further rate cut is not necessary at this time,” she said.

“According to National Australia Bank’s latest Monthly Business Survey, business conditions jumped in October, marking the largest monthly increase in the history of the survey.

“But while business conditions were good, business confidence suffered a further fall in October suggesting firms remain uncertain over the near-term demand in their industry.

“So while some areas of the economy are improving, others are struggling and the Reserve Bank feels as though the

best course of action is to leave rates on hold.”

Peter Arnold, product director of RateCity.com.au, said that despite no move to the cash rate again on Tuesday, many variable borrowers are paying less and less each month to service the same home loan.

“Since the last RBA cut of 0.25 percentage points we’ve seen the average variable rate decrease by 0.35 percentage points – that’s over and above what the RBA has passed on as a range of lenders move independently of the central bank,” he said.

“For a typical borrower of $300,000 that 0.35 percentage points ends up being a $62 a month saving. If you’re in some of the capital cities like Sydney and Melbourne – or if you’ve borrowed more – those numbers can easily be double.”

Home buyers can expect an increase in property listings in the New Year following the announcement, according to LJ Hooker CEO, Grant Harrod.

“It’s not only good news for the retail sector before the Christmas spending rush, but will also be welcomed by those who are considering purchasing next year,’’ he said.

“Many home owners will be making a New Year’s resolution to list their property for sale while it still remains in favour of the sellers.”

ancer Council NSW is warning local residents that, with summer officially here, it’s important to get back into sunsafe habits such as wearing hats and sunscreen Mark Ludbrooke, Cancer Council Programs Coordinator for the Inner West, said people often misjudged their sun exposure with a recent survey of adolescents finding that one in two rated their chances of developing skin cancer as ‘low’ when statistically two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70.

“We live in a country where the skin cancer incidence rates are the highest in the world with skin cancer the most common cancer in young Australians aged between 15 and 44 years,” Mr Ludbrooke said.

“Now that it is officially summer and UV ratings are set to soar, it’s absolutely crucial to take the right precautions and be fully aware of the facts.”

He advises using a combination of the five sun smart measures: sun protective clothing, sunscreens, sunglasses, hats and seeking shade.

He says he hears many myths regarding

skin cancer and sun protection. One is that the chemicals in sunscreen are bad for you.

“There is currently no scientific evidence that chemicals used in sunscreen (including nanoparticles) pose a health risk,” Mr Ludbrooke said.

“Sunscreen helps protect skin from UV damage that can increase your risk of skin cancer. For best protection always use sunscreen with other sun protection measures.”

Other myths he hears are that you can’t get burnt on cloudy days, through glass, or if you have dark or olive skin.

Mr Ludbrooke also makes the point that most people get sunburnt when they are not deliberately seeking a tan.

“Sunbaking is a high-risk activity which will increase your risk of skin cancer,” he said.

“But don’t forget, you are also exposed to UV radiation whilst surfing, skating, walking the dog, gardening or running errands.”

He says there is a SunSmart app available from the App Store or Google Play which advises forecast UV exposure.

A

ustralian hip-hopper of the moment Illy is bringing his One for the Cities tour to the Enmore Theatre this weekend.

While his first three albums garnered him critical acclaim as a smart and idealistic hip-hop storyteller, his fourth album ‘Cinematic’ has brought him mainstream success, entering the ARIA charts at number 4 and spending a total of 16 weeks in the top 50. It has now achieved Gold Sales status in Australia, selling in excess of 35,000 albums.

‘Cinematic’ features singles like ‘Youngbloods’ which made it into this year’s Triple J Hottest 100 at number 77 and ‘Tightrope’, featuring vocals from San Cisco drummer Scarlett Stevens, which became his most successful single to date hitting number 18 in the ARIA Singles chart and staying in the Top 50 for a healthy 19 weeks. The YouTube video has garnered more than 1.5 million plays to date.

As well as Stevens, the album featured other artists like Hilltop Hoods, Drapht, Daniel Merriweather, Kira Puru and Ahren Stringer from the Amity Affliction. It was produced by M-Phazes who has worked with Eminem, Kimbra and Bliss n Eso.

Illy plays the Enmore Theatre this weekend

It builds on a strong couple of years for Illy which saw him win Best Urban Artist at the 2013 ARIA Awards for his previous album ‘Bring It Back’, selling out shows across the country and playing at festivals like Splendour in the Grass (where he skydived in), Groovin The Moo, Triple J’s One Night Stand in Mildura as well as touring Europe with the Hilltop Hoods.

“I feel pretty confident in my artistic vision now,” Illy says.

“I feel like my hooks and lyrics are at a level I’m really happy with, and ‘Cinematic’ reflects that: it plays out almost like a movie. It sums up where I’m at now, looks at everything I’ve done, and how appreciative I am that I get to make music.”

A sign of his growing confidence is the fact that he set up his own record label ONETWO to release ‘Cinematic’.

“Some people, their own label is just a way to put out their own music,” he said “But we’re already looking to work with other people and identify young talent coming up. It’s my way of paying forward all the help and support I received.”

Illy plays the Enmore Theatre this Saturday, December 6 at 7pm. He will be supported by Tkay Maidza, Jackie Onassis and Baro. Tickets are $44.70 and are available from the Enmore Theatre or Ticketek.

For all the self-tanners out there who are opting for a faux tan over a natural one this summer, I have found the product that will change your life and it has been right under our noses this whole time.

While I always hope to get a little bronzed from the sun once summer comes around, I know that fake tanning is the safer and better option, which is why I love to get out my St Tropez or Bondi Sands.

You don’t get tan lines, you can control how dark or light you want to go and you are safe from the nasties that come with sun exposure, but self-tanning can be pretty cumbersome, gets very messy and is so easy to get wrong.

I know from years of experience with fake tan that it doesn’t always go your way and I have endured hours of teasing from family members and colleagues about the orange palms that I always sport after a tanning session.

I don’t know why, but every time I would head to the shops to pick up a new tan, I would ignore the mitts that were sitting beside them on the shelves.

Whenever I would read the instructions on the self tanning products, I would ignore the sentence that plainly said “using a tan applicator mitt...”

I would be left scrubbing my palms for hours after tanning, trying to get rid of the dirty orange stains that were bound to stay there for days – a dead giveaway that my bronzed look was not even close to natural.

That time is now over, as I have converted and am now a happy tan applicator mitt-user and I am kicking myself that I didn’t begin using a mitt sooner.

I have been using St Tropez’s tan applicator mitt, which has a water resistant barrier between the foamy, almost velvet-like application side and your hand on the inside.

It is washable, allows you to better control where you are applying the tan and gives a smooth result with not a streak in sight – how can you complain with that?

Anyone who is like the old me and is continually putting up with stained palms and streaky legs, fork out the $10 and get yourself a mitt because they’re lifesavers.

That time is upon us again – grass seed season! As the temperature is continuing to increase, more species of grasses are now flowering and turning to seed as they reproduce.

These prickly little seeds can cause major health problems for our dogs and cats. Because of their awn shape and backwards pointing barbs, once they DR. SAM penetrate the skin, often they have a habit KOVAC of migrating deeper down into the soft Southern Cross tissues of dogs and cats who spend time Veterinary Clinic outdoors. Here they can form a nasty 9516 0234 abscess thanks to the body’s attempt at 60 Princes Hwy, trying to wall off the grass seed from the St Peters www.southernbody. These abscesses can then rupture crossvet.com.au causing pain and infection.

It’s not uncommon for grass seeds to migrate through to the spinal cord and into internal structures like the heart and if present in these areas, they can cause death.

Treatment Once a grass seed has lodged in the body, surgery is almost always required to remove it. Because of the size of the awns, often it is very difficult to identify these seeds (much like finding a needle in a haystack) and so advanced imaging such as CT or MRI may be required to plan the surgery.

Prevention Prevention is always better than cure. Check your pet over every couple of days to pick up grass seeds. Between the toes and on the front part of the chest are typical locations for grass seeds to get stuck. If you find seeds stuck on the fur, remove them before they have a chance to migrate through the skin.

If your pet shows signs of obsessive licking at the paws or shaking its head, they could have a grass seed lodged and it is best to get a vet check at this point.

There is one thing the majority of successful people have in common, hard work and failure.

I have the pleasure in my job of meeting people from all walks of life, with a variety of career choices, and more importantly from hugely differing backgrounds.

Many of them are completely content just existing in life.

Following the same routine, wake up, go to work, go home, and repeat tomorrow. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Happiness is an individually driven state of mind.

However, there are some individuals who want to make successful life choices, and the pattern that seems to surface when you observe their actions is they’ve failed, sometimes many times. It’s those who truly succeed that remain steady, stay on course but regardless of how many times they fall down, they always get back up.

A quick Google search of “Successful Failures” will show you just how their mistakes have contributed to their successes.

Music royalty on show at industry’s night of nights he cream of the music crop were out in force for the 2014 ARIA Awards at The Star Event Centre last week.

Australian musicians rubbed shoulders with international pop acts including Katy Perry and One Direction, as well as Australia’s own 5 Seconds of Summer who’ve gained a huge following worldwide and were one of the most popular acts on the red carpet.

The big winners on the night were Sia – who took out the award for Telstra Album of the Year, Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release and Best Video – and Chet Faker who went home with Best Male Artist and Best Independent Release.

The Inner City Weekender was there on the red carpet and backstage to chat to the stars including ARIA winners Dan Sultan, Sheppard, and The Wiggles along with local stars including ‘The X Factor’ winner Marlisa, ‘The Voice’ winner Anja Nissen, and a host of others.

Anja Nissen On the response from fans: “It’s been a really, really great response, I’ve had a lot of support which has been awesome and yeah I just can’t wait to come out with my new stuff. I’ve just been writing a lot at the moment”.

Dan Sultan On the process of creating his new EP ‘Dirty Ground’: “I sat in a room with some microphones and I had an acoustic guitar and that was it. You know ‘Blackbird’ [which won Dan the Best Rock Album award] took months and months and a lot of production, a lot of overdubs and this took a few hours, ‘Dirty Ground’ took a few hours so it was the complete opposite. I’ve had some reviews where it says it doesn’t go far enough into production. Everyone’s allowed to have their own opinion but to me that’s a bit of a compliment because that’s what I was trying to do, I was trying to have it really stripped back but it is the opposite to ‘Blackbird’”.

Amy and Emma from Sheppard On the other nominees in their category: “We’d really love to see Sia take it out. She is incredible and she’s a great songwriter so we’d love to see her win something”.

The Wiggles On their nomination for Best Children’s Release, a category The Wiggles in their original format took out 11 times: Simon: “Yeah, I think it’s great. What Anthony and the other guys started almost 25 years ago, and to be here today and be able to continue that on is pretty special”.

On the new crop of talent show stars: “I think it’s great, I’m a huge believer in, if the opportunity is there, take it, which is exactly what I did. I took the opportunity and its gotten me this far which I’ll always be grateful for”.

Marlisa On her recent show at Rooty Hill RSL: “I played a 30 minute set, six songs and it was incredible to see my support base in western Sydney. I have another show at the Rooty Hill RSL coming up next week which I’m really excited about”.

On support from her fans: “I’ve found it really great to see people from my home town supporting me, and I think from western Sydney and the Philippines are two of my biggest fan bases, so its defi-

nitely been great to come back out here”.

Chris Lilley On his competition for Best Comedy Release: “I just met a guy called Buddy Good, and he seems pretty funny so he can have it. I don’t mind, he seemed cool”.

On where he gets inspiration for his characters: “I will be looking out tonight.

There’s a lot of hoops to jump through, there’s a lot of experience in life and just let it happen at the pace it’s supposed to happen.

“I mean the nominees for the Album of the Year that we’re presenting are all amazing and so diverse and each album has to be taken on its merit and for that I think Australia’s amazing because it’s got such diverse taste.”

On whether they ever get sick of award shows: Jon: “No I don’t get sick of them. I mean this is an important one. It’s Australia and it’s celebrating Australian music and all the effort and all the love and all the passion and all those things that grew us into wanting to be a band in the first place”.

Tim: “I mean many many years ago you’d get sick after them (laughs)”.

Jon: “And over the years Tim and I worked out a really good method of coping with all that”.

‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’, a film from acclaimed director Ridley Scott (‘Gladiator’) retells the biblical story of Moses, who, according to the book of Exodus, suffered near death during infancy, was adopted into the Egyptian royal family, defied the Pharoah, freed the Hebrews and parted the Red Sea. With Christian Bale (‘The Dark Knight’) as Moses, Ben Kingsley (‘Ghandi’) as Nun, Joel Edgerton (‘The Great Gatsby’) as Ramses and Sigourney Weaver (‘Alien’) as Tuya, this all-star cast is set to make this film a blockbuster of epic proportions.

At almost two hours and 30 minutes long, the film is said to retell the famous biblical story of Moses with stunning visual effects and 3D immersion.

The plagues and epic parting of the Red Sea scenes are said to be rendered perfectly.

While the film carries an air of Hollywood with it, it finds redemption in that it actually isn’t overtly offensive to its original religious text.

hen the Clare Valley’s Tim Adams decided to plant somewhat new and unproven at the time Pinot Gris 10 years ago, he reckons he did so for the challenge of seeing just how well this variety would go.

His wife Pam, their company’s general manager, had a different view. She suggested that Tim was going through a mid-life crisis. But she supported his venture and persistence, and today Tim Adams Pinot Gris is one of Australia’s top-selling premium Pinot Gris.

Tim says those first plantings a decade ago were the result of drinking a great Alsace Pinot Gris with an old mate, and thinking how well the variety may go on some specific Clare Valley sites. He’s not looked back, and today uses fruit in his Tim Adams Pinot Gris from his own vineyards and those of contract local growers.

His latest release, 2014, is loaded with hearty fruit characters and cleansing acidity. Pay $20 and particularly enjoy with seafood salads over summer.

One to note: SHAW Vineyard in cool-climate Murrumbateman, around 25 minutes north of Canberra, is somewhat unique in that while it is at a higher elevation than most vineyards in the region, its sloping profile enjoys optimum sunlight and gives protection from potential frost damage through its good air-drainage.

Now one of the district’s more renowned producers of quality wines, Shaw has just released a 2012 Winemakers Selection Cabernet Merlot that’s a real mouth-filler of fresh berry flavours and delightful aromas from the glass of cassis and dark plums.

Singer Delta Goodrem will be returning to her roots next March when she visits Ramsay Street again for the 30th Anniversary of ‘Neighbours’. Goodrem will reprise her role of Nina Tucker for a limited run of three episodes plus appear in a documentary retrospective.

The 30-year-old was last seen on the iconic soap in 2005, so it will be welcome homecoming for fans of the show.

SBS2 have started airing a popular American late night show called ‘@ midnight’. A rotating line-up of top comedians battle nightly to determine who has the funniest take on current social media and pop culture happenings. The show already airs at midnight on the Comedy Channel but SBS2 have started their series right from the very beginning, which is great for newcomers.

Nine are still yet to confirm whether they’ll give ‘Big Brother’ a shot next year despite them opening up a housemate registration of interest for the next series, if they have one, on their website. The recent finale, which saw Ryan win, pulled in around 700,000 viewers.

Fans of the popular A&E show ‘Ghost Adventures’ will be shocked to hear that co-founder and investigator Nick Groff has surprisingly quit the show. Rumours suggest a rift between fellow co-founder and lead investigator Zak Bagans was to blame for the situation.

Foxtel channel STUDIO will be no more come March next year, instead it will be replaced by a similar channel called Foxtel Arts HD. The new channel will feature opera, ballet productions, theatre, dance, cabaret, music, literature and visual arts.

STUDIO is owned by SBS.

Channel Seven has announced this year’s ‘Carols in the Domain’ will be hosted by the ‘Sunrise’ team which includes David Koch, Sam Armytage, Natalie Barr and Mark Beretta. The muchloved family tradition, now in its 32nd year, will be broadcast live on December 20.

Lexus has launched its all-new global coupe, the RC 350, the most emotive vehicle it has produced since the LFA supercar.

he Dulwich Jets basketball team have qualified for the finals of the City of Sydney Premier League despite losing their final game of the regular season this week.

The Jets went into the game on top of the competition ladder and confident of making the finals while their opponents UNSW Gold were less certain and played with more urgency.

In the first half, UNSW Gold leapt out to a massive 57-32 lead. The Jets regrouped in the second half and outscored their opponents but still went down 107-91.

Top scorer for the Jets was Jonni Mei-Edwards with 29 points including three 3-pointers.

He was supported by Lau Dok with 24, Jake Wilson with 17 and Ruai Gurin with 14.

Jake Wilson said small things matter at this level.

“Now that the State League games have finished our players are focused on the local Sydney Competition. I’m seeing a lot more confidence and coolness in our side,” Wilson said.

“I’ve moved to Stanmore now and the stadium is easier to get to.

“It’s closer to work and I’m starting games feeling cooler and less stressed. It seems small, but small things matter at this level.

It’s helped me make better decisions about shooting or passing.”

Wilson, who pays guard, said speed was their best asset.

“We seem to be winning most games that we play at our tempo,” he said.

“With the semis next week we are in good form.”

Coach Chris Woods said improvements in bench statistics had provided vital information to make changes to game strategy when they need to. He expects it to be a great final season.

The Dulwich Jets will take on UNSW Gold in the semi-finals next Monday in Alexandria.
