Absolute disgrace Anzac memorial plaque stolen from historical gates BASIL NAIMET
A
bronze plaque that was erected on Petersham Park Anzac gates has been stolen. The theft of the important piece of Marrickville’s history has been labelled a disgrace. Marrickville Council believes the rising price of bronze, gold and copper across the country may be the reason. “I think most people would agree it is extremely disrespectful to steal a war memorial plaque,” said Marrickville Mayor, Victor Macri, who was outraged at the news. According to Monument Australia, a website documenting important historical artefacts, the Petersham Park Anzac gates and pillars were originally part of the Petersham Town Hall and were re-erected in their current location in 1921. The Mayor believes there should be measures put in place to prevent such an abhorrent act from occurring again. “There should be tougher measures applied across the scrap metal industry, including mandatory reporting of suspicious items,” Cr Macri said. He urged local residents to report suspicious behaviour to police to prevent the theft of bronze plaques in memorials around the local government area. Sadly, Petersham Park is not the only place thieves have struck. A plaque at the former electricity substation at 134 Lennox Street, Newtown has also been stolen. The substation has historical significance according to the Council’s Heritage and Urban Design advisor. According to Council, the substation is a prominent piece of Marrickville’s history as it represented the early 20th century period when private companies supplied electricity infrastructure to households. It was a symbol of the development and expansion of electricity infrastructure in the 1930’s. Anyone with information on the thefts should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
