Spirit of Christmas Mrs Claus says holiday season is all about families BY LOUISE BOURKE

S

he’s written a list, checked it twice and doesn’t care if you’ve been naughty or nice – only that you take the time to enjoy this Christmas with your community. Bernadette Dimitrov is Australia’s fi rst official Mrs Claus. Earlier this year, she completed a Bachelor of SantaClausology from the International University of Santa Claus in the US, making her one of Australia’s foremost experts on all things Santa Claus. She completed subjects including story-telling for children, how to say ‘Ho, Ho, Ho’ (there are many diff erent ways to say it, depending on the situation), and how to deal with people who don’t believe in Santa. Now, with her degree under her patent leather belt, Ms Dimitrov is spreading Christmas cheer and suggesting ways families can spend their Christmas together this year. “It’s a great idea for families to have a look at what’s going on in their local area and then diarise it. Th at way, you can make it a family outing,” she advises. “Attending carols is a wonderful way for families to spend time together to create a bit of magic and enjoy a lovely Christmas tradition.” Ms Dimitrov also recommends walking around local streets to view the neighbourhood Christmas lights.

Mrs Claus has tips for families this Christmas.

We re complainers Marrickville Council has come second on a list of the most-complained about NSW councils in the last financial year. Council received 42 complaints in the year to June 2011, with 35 of them relating to the proposed introduction of the BDS boycott of Israel. It’s a dramatic increase on the previous financial year, when there were only nine complaints lodged in total. A Marrickville Council spokesperson acknowledged the high number of complaints in relation to the BDS and did not wish to comment further, other than saying that the handling of the complaints was done by the Department of Local Government. Some of the other complaints against the council related to enforcement and regulatory powers (3), misconduct by councils (3) and land use planning and development matters (2). Local Government Minister, Don Page, said publishing the number of complaints about local councils was about making councils accountable to their ratepayers. “The core responsibilities of councils might be more complex than they once were – but they still centre on efficient and effective delivery of services to ratepayers,” he said. “Communities will voice discontent if they veer from those core responsibilities.” City of Sydney Council came fi rst on the list of most complained about councils, with 44 complaints lodged. Of these more than half related to parking provision and parking enforcement. Coastal councils including Coffs Harbour, Shoalhaven and Newcastle featured heavily in the top 20, with residents complaining about fi nancial mismanagement and development decisions.

Today will mark the longest day of the year in the southern hemisphere thanks to the annual summer solstice. “The entire Southern Hemisphere will experience the longest day of the year today. After this the days will gradually become shorter until we reach the autumnal equinox on March 20, 2012. On this date, day and night will become equal,” says Dick Whitaker, Chief Meteorologist at The Weather Channel. “At the summer solstice the sun will be directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn which goes through the middle of the Queensland City of Rockhampton, but at noon on Th ursday the sun will be directly overhead Rockhampton,” he continues. “In astrology the summer solstice is known as Litha and the autumnal equinox is Mabon." here are now more cops on local streets – 11 more, in fact – with six new police recruits arriving in Marrickville and five in Newtown this week. The recruits, who graduated from the NSW Police College in Goulburn last Friday, are some of the 509 new officers heading to posts around NSW as Probationary Constables. Superintendent Greg Peters, from Marrickville Police, said: “As the Marrickville Local Area Commander I welcome the addition of the six new Probationary Constables to the Command. We are pleased to have them on board.” After an induction at the station on Monday, the constables have been partnered with a fi eld training officer who will guide them through the fi rst few months of their policing careers. Among the new recruits is Probationary Constable Schmit, who joined the Police Force as a part of the Prosecutors Acceleration Program. Marrickville MP slams public transport fare increases, which will hit families

Fenced in: Car hits fence in George Street

Inquiries are continuing after a car damaged a fence, car port and water meter in Marrickville on Tuesday night. About 6.50pm, a man driving a blue Mazda sedan was attempting to park in the driveway of a home in George Street. The car has reversed across the road, hitting a parked car and house fence on the other side of the street. As a result of the impact, a water meter belonging to the house was destroyed. A car port at the fi rst house was also damaged. The driver of the Mazda was not injured. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

M

ember for Marrickville, Carmel Tebbutt, has slammed the State Government’s decision to increase public transport fares by more than double the rate of infl ation. “The O’Farrell Government’s decision to increase public transport fares is a slap in the face for local commuters,” Ms Tebbutt said. “Jacking up public transport fares well above the rate of infl ation proves how out of touch the O’Farrell Government is with Marrickville families.” Under the new increase, prices will rise on average by 5.5 per cent, meaning a local worker travelling from Marrickville to the city by train will fork out an extra $52 a year from January 2. “It is the fi rst increase since April last year and covers infl ation increases for the past two years,” the independent regulator, IPART, said. Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian, defended the increase, saying that it was irresponsible of the previous government to keep fare prices on hold. Allan Miles, from Action for Public Transport, said the new fares failed to tackle the long-standing problem of the lack of a cheap all-day ticket. “We need a $10 all-day, all-mode ticket for the Sydney suburban area, and we need it now – not at the end of the rainbow,” Mr Miles said.

The club and its members have supported a range of charities within the local community over the past year. Their contributions include the donation of over 450 kilograms of food as well as Christmas gifts for the women at Guthrie House and knitting over 40 blankets, scarves and beanies for the women of Locke Haven Nursing Home, Petersham. Curves staff and members have also donated office attire, shoes and accessories to Dress for Success, a Marrickville-based charity that prepares women for job interviews. Michelle Green, owner of Curves Petersham, was honoured to receive the award and said that Curves is proud to partner local charities doing great work in the community. “While we work to improve the lives of women

said the festive season tends to see an increase in foodborne illnesses such as salmonella. “The common culprits for food poisoning are unwashed hands, over-stocked fridges and improper cooking practices particularly in relation to outdoor barbecuing,” Dr Conaty said.

Quidditch is not just played in the 'Harry Potter' movies and novels.

Move over, Hogwarts UNSW Quidditch team takes out inaugural cup BY LOUISE BOURKE

E

at your heart out, Hogwarts – the Quidditch team from University of NSW (UNSW) has taken out the fi rst Australian Quidditch Cup at the UNSW’s Kensington campus. Quidditch, the sport played by the wizards of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, involves players riding

broomsticks to dodge, repel or catch a series of flying balls. The broomsticks used by the UNSW team didn’t fl y, but the game was still a tight one, said Quidditch Society president and Marrickville local, Justin Chau. “It was hard fought by all players, with some games a nail-bitingly one goal diff erence in the fi nal scores,” Mr Chau, 22, said. “I was ecstatic and proud that we

won.” The team, ‘Snapes on a Plane’, beat four other teams from across NSW to take home the inaugural Quidditch Universities of Australia Federation League, or QUAFL, Cup. Mr Chau, a fourth-year medical student, said the club has a healthy membership of over 120 students with the prospect of that number increasing when uni returns next year.

Business of the week Y.E. Ghaly & Co

Ideas need money Even if you have the best idea in the world, your small business may struggle to reach its potential without the funds to grow. As many operators will know, business lending channels mostly dried up during the global fi nancial crisis. That’s why more and more SMEs are choosing to bypass traditional fi nance options and seek out funding from private investors, by agreeing to sell part of their equity interest in the business in return for a cash injection. Trading ownership for capital is a tough decision, but there’s no shortage of businesses willing to give it a crack. Australia’s largest capital raising platform for small private companies, The Australian Small Scale Offerings Board, reports at least one enquiry per week from start-ups needing to raise up to $2 million cash. Last year it helped 46 companies to gain capital, and around $120 million has been raised through the Board in the past six years. The good news for small operators is that traditional channels are reopening and new ones are being created – a handful of smaller financial institutions added new business loan products in 2011. Th e major di fference we’re seeing since the GFC is in the way lenders price business loans; that is quoting a rate range, rather than an advertised price.

You’re going to be kept busy trying to keep up with replying to messages, voicemail, letters and other correspondence. Your business and personal life could overwhelm you with errands. Time will be of the essence and managing your diary so that you don’t waste it will be essential, but not easy to achieve. Quick thinking and novel insights will be useful in improving your personal relationships.

sagittarius

Nov 23 to Dec 21

You have an incredibly fine-tuned intuition and sniffing out a deal shouldn’t be too hard. If interest rates have been a concern then you will find a rather novel way of handling the matter. It may simply mean re-negotiating the family budget and dispensing with some unnecessary expenditures. If you’ve had debts or been concerned about Christmas holiday costs now is the ideal time to clear things up.

capricorn

Dec 22 to January 20

Over the next month you will begin to feel fantastic due to the combined influence of the Sun, Jupiter and Pluto. You can expect to feel more optimistic and your zany sense of humour will be brought to the fore. This is the ideal time to enjoy the company of friends and family members. You’ll be full of vitality and won’t want to stand still. You’ll have itchy feet and will be looking to get fun out of life.

aquarius

January 21 to Feb 19

Friendships and relationships could hit a bit of snag and your nervous energy could be part of the problem. Someone you love will be frustrating, so be prepared to be flexible. It is also important that you take time out for rest and that you don’t burn the candle at both ends. Your intuition is extremely strong and it will help you to see people and situations more realistically throughout the next month!

Friendships are very important to you, in fact if you’ve been feeling uncertain a friend will come to the rescue and offer you some fresh insights. New alliances can be formed this month and independent business owners can form new partnerships to help them expand their business and open new markets. If you’re working for an employee an infrastructure change is likely to result in a new learning curve, which will be interesting indeed.
