he Federal and NSW Governments have announced the acquisition of the 16 hectare Dial A Dump site at St Peters to build the interchange for Stage 2 of the WestConnex which will run from Beverly Hills to St Peters.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, NSW Premier Mike Baird and NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay visited the site on Tuesday this week to make the announcement.

The proposed motorway will feature three lane tunnels in each direction and will surface near the intersection of Campbell Street and Euston Road on the corner of Sydney Park.

The project will include widening Campbell Street and Euston Road as well as a new bridge over the Alexandra Canal to Bourke Road.

It is likely that a number of homes in the area will be compulsorily acquired as well and residents said WestConnex representatives have been door knocking to advise that this was a possibility.

A WestConnex Delivery Authority spokesperson said a number of properties in the area were already identified as being in existing road widening reservations and they began door-knocking these properties to offer one-on-one meetings.

“At this early stage, there are no residential property acquisitions expected for the St Peters Interchange outside those already publicly identified,” the spokesperson said.

Fairytale ending for Wanderers, but not so for Melbourne Cup

There is a genre of movie, a subset of the ‘Rags to Riches’ story, that tells of an unlikely sporting team that exceeds everyone’s expectations.

Think ‘The Bad News Bears’ – that team of kids so hopeless at baseball that no team would have them but who find faith in themselves and reach the final of their competition. There’s also the Jamaican bob-sled team in ‘Cool Runnings’ or the soccer-mad Sikh girl in ‘Bend it like Beckham’ who overcomes an array of prejudices to make it to the top.

I’m looking forward to a movie about the Western Sydney Wanderers winning the Asian Champions League last weekend. It has all the ingredients of the genre.

After Clive Palmer’s Gold Coast United folded during the 2011-12 season, the Football Federation Australia decided a western Sydney team would fill the vacancy for the following season.

The team didn’t have a lot of time to secure players and sponsors but cannily, they invited soccer fans to help them choose their name and colours so for their opening game of the 2012-13 season, more than 10,000 turned out to cheer them on against Central Coast. Little was expected of them so a draw in that first game was as good as a win.

It wasn’t till their fourth competitive game that they recorded a win but the spirit in the team grew, the fanbase strengthened and the wins kept coming so that, by the end of the year, they finished on top of the A-League in their debut season – although they stumbled in the grand final going down to Central Coast.

However, in finishing top of the table, they qualified for this year’s Asian Champion’s League. Australian teams didn’t have a great record in the competition. Since 2007, when they first competed, only four teams had made it past the group stage. Three of them were eliminated in the first qualifying round with only Adelaide United in 2008 making it to the final before being thrashed 5-0 on aggregate by Japanese club Gamba Osaka.

The two other Australian clubs who qualified for this year’s competition, Central Coast and Melbourne Victory, both dropped out in the group stage but the Wanderers made it through to the knockout rounds.

In the Round of 16, they scraped past Japanese club Sanfrecce Hiroshima on the away goals rule after finishing 3-3 on aggregate goals. In the quarter final they beat reigning champion

Not all stories follow the script

Guangzhou Evergrande from China again on away goals. In the semi-final, they travelled to South Korea where they held FC Seoul to a 0-0 draw before recording a confident 2-0 home win to qualify for the final.

Their opponents Al-Hilal are one of the strongest clubs in Saudi Arabia, having won the Saudi Premier League more times than any other club as well as the Asian Champions League twice previously and other Asian and Arab trophies.

Their coach reportedly dismissed the Wanderers’ chances describing them as a small club, a fact Wanderers coach Tony Popovic picked up on after they had secured the title.

“We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia,” Popovic said.

Next month they will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup against Cruz Azul from Mexico. If they can make it through that game, they’ll play a semi-final against Spanish giants Real Madrid.

What a scene that will make in the movie!

The opposite of a rags to riches tale is riches to rags and, tragically, that’s what we saw in the Melbourne Cup this week.

Japanese horse Admire Rakti came to Australia with high hopes and, after winning the Caulfield Cup a couple of weeks ago, started the Melbourne Cup as clear favourite. With a good barrier draw, he was able to manoeuvre into a good position, one back from the early pacesetter My Ambivalent but ahead of the bustle of the pack.

It looked like it was going to be his day but jockey Zac Purton realised the horse was starting to struggle as they approached the turn and eased him up to finish last. His condition continued to deteriorate and he died shortly after in the stables.

The RSPCA put out a statement stating: “Events like these are a stark reminder to the community of the real risks to horses associated with racing.

Sadly, injury and death are the price some horses pay for our entertainment in a sport that puts intense pressure on animals to perform to the limits of their endurance.”

Racing Victoria defended its safety record claiming that over the last 10 years it has been the best in world thoroughbred racing with fatal accidents occurring in just 0.05 per cent of races.

It was a sad end to a race that captures the attention of most people in this country as well as many others around the world. It was also a poignant reminder that not all stories follow the script.

Minister finds spare $8.6m for homeless CHRIS CONNOLLY

he NSW Government has provided additional funding to save five specialist homelessness services in the inner city that had been threatened with closure.

The five services, Detour House, Young People’s Refuge, B Miles, Stepping Out and the Community Restorative Centre women’s program, looked to have missed out on future funding when the Government introduced its ‘Going Home Staying Home’ reforms earlier this year.

But this week Minister for Family and Community Services Gabrielle Upton found $8.6 million to fund the five organisations for the next three years.

“Going Home Staying Home means more money and better services delivered to the areas of greatest need. Over the next three years, the NSW Government will invest a record half a billion dollars right across NSW to tackle homelessness head on,” Minister Upton said.

“As I said back in June, we needed to ensure the inner city had more support and time to adjust so that people did not slip through the cracks, which is why I restored the $8.6 million in funding to the inner city.”

Services said she was happy that the Government had recognised the important work of these services.

“We’re particularly pleased that Young People’s Refuge in Leichhardt will remain open, as it’s the only girls-only crisis refuge left in NSW and provides a critical service to girls as young as 13 escaping domestic violence and sexual abuse,” Ms McMurray said.

“We will continue to work with the Government on ensuring these reforms deliver the best outcomes for women escaping domestic violence and who are experiencing other problems like sexual abuse, mental health and drug and alcohol addiction.”

Marrickville Councillor Jo Haylen welcomed the news but said funding must also be restored to other services facing closure locally and across the state.

“Places like Innari Housing and Marrickville Women’s refuge are on transitional funding arrangements from a Service Support Fund,” Cr Haylen said.

“The fact that providers originally knocked back are now receiving funding only underscores problems with the original tender process.”

“This will greatly increase pollution, congestion and runs roughshod over due process. People are in the dark about what the hell is going on here with this shocking piece of public infrastructure for local people in Newtown.”

Roads Minister Duncan Gay defended the project saying by 2021 there will be an extra 1.5 million people in greater Sydney and that we need to make sure we can cater for the population growth.

“The Greens would have us sitting around camp fires and yodelling rather than commuting on world class road networks that link to public transport hubs,” Minister Gay said.

“They don’t want WestConnex because they don’t want anything.”

The WestConnex Delivery Authority spokesperson continued: “The number of properties that actually need to be acquired to build the New M5 will be confirmed when the preferred design is selected in mid 2015.”

Marrickville Mayor Mark Gardiner said the houses identified had been earmarked for acquisition back in 1951.

“Honestly, at a time when most international cities have long since learnt the benefits of abandoning old fashioned surface road widening, this is just another example of an old-fashioned government stuck in a 1950s mind-set,” Mayor Gardiner said.

He added he will ask for an urgent meeting with the WestConnex Delivery Authority to seek further information about the plans and express serious concerns about the 80 houses that have been earmarked for acquisition.

Greens candidate for Newtown Jenny Leong described it as a shameless failure in community consultation.

“Just weeks ago at a community meeting I attended in Tempe the WestConnex representative wouldn’t confirm or deny the Government’s intention to acquire homes,” Ms Leong said.

“The portal that comes out at St Peters seems to force 10 lanes of traffic onto South King Street or through to Alexandria, where there is already heavy traffic.

Jordan’s ‘rapped’ with award Marrickville student recognised as one of best in country in NAIDOC competition CHRIS CONNOLLY

ine-year-old Jordan Dyson from St Brigid’s Primary School in Marrickville received a prestigious NAIDOC Week Medal last

week.

Dylan Williams, executive director of NAIDOC Week 2014 School Initiatives, said Jordan was in a select group of students as there were 115,000 entries received from NSW schools but only 25 medals were issued.

Year 4 student Jordan entered the short story writing competition for children in Years 3 to 6 where they were asked to write the lyrics to a rap song titled ‘Respect’ about respect for indigenous Australians, culture and each other.

“The judges included aboriginal elders, Jessica Mauboy and Steven Peacocke who plays Brax on ‘Home and Away’,” Mr Williams said.

“The winning entries were hung in the foyer of Parliament House during NAIDOC Week.”

Jordan performed his rap in front of his classmates and said he was excited and surprised to winthe prestigious NAIDOC award.

“I thought I hadn’t won. I entered back

His mother Naomi said she’s not sure where Jordan’s performing instinct comes from.

“There’s only the two of us. He loves doing it. He was like that even as a baby,” Ms Dyson said.

“He’s auditioning for ‘Matilda’ in about a week’s time. It’s being produced by the same people who did ‘Billy Elliot’.”

She said he’s already done some work in TV and radio commercials as well as appearing in a music video for Neil Finn.

“He does other things too. He’s a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He’s played AFL for five years and he swims four times a week with Col Jones Tempe Torpedoes swimming team.”

The NAIDOC Week school initiative was open to entrants from Kindergarten through to Year 12 and was supported

by Koori Kids, the NSW Department of Education and Communities, the Motor Accidents Authority, NSW Aboriginal Affairs and Harvey Norman.

The aim of the competition was to provide students with a greater understanding of the importance of friendship and cultural diversity.

It has brought Australians together and illustrated how general public awareness has been raised around these issues in recent times.

Creatives evicted from St Peters Short+Sweet served bill for $30,000 in legal fees after being evicted by Council

heatre company Short+Sweet is in dispute with Marrickville Council over legal fees after being evicted from its St Peters home earlier this year.

Short+Sweet founder and executive director Mark Cleary said the organisation had been based in a warehouse space at 31 Princes Highway, St Peters for 11 years and he had lived on the site during that period without any problems until July this year when Council applied to the Land and Environment Court for an Emergency Order to evict them.

Mr Cleary said they applied to the Court for a three week extension, which was granted and they have since moved to alternative premises in Maroubra. He says now Council has issued him with a bill for their legal fees of around $30,000.

“They are a pack of bullies,” Mr Cleary said.

“It would be interesting to find out what Council’s development plans are for this site. This is apparently not an isolated case.

Marrickville Council, for all its claims of being the home of the creative industries in Sydney, is pushing other artists out of spaces in the area.”

A Marrickville Council spokesperson said Council staff first attended the property at 31 Princes Highway on Tuesday, July 8 at the request of Fire and Rescue NSW. “During the inspection of July 8, Council officers discovered that the premises were being used for residential purposes without the necessary approval and without the necessary fire safety controls in place,” the Council spokesperson said, adding that Mr Cleary was issued with an order to cease residential use of the premises.

The spokesperson said that after Council officers were denied access to the site on Thursday, July 17, they applied for a search warrant, which was executed on July 22 and determined that residential use was ongoing and that fire safety issues remained present. This led to the action in the Land and Environment Court.

“It is clear from these circumstances that Mr Cleary was given a number of opportunities to cease the illegal and dangerous residential use and failed to do so,” the spokesperson said.

“This forced Council to take legal action and incur substantial costs in order to secure the safety of occupants. It is appropriate that Mr Cleary should cover these costs which ultimately are borne by the community.”

Man steals bag, but gives it to onlookers after chase

Stolen medals found returned in backyard after public plea

Police are looking for a man who may be able to assist police with enquiries after a woman’s handbag was stolen at the Marrickville Metro on Monday.

About 7.35pm on Monday, November 4, a 52-year-old woman was shopping at a store at the Marrickville Metro with her bag placed in the child seat of the trolley. Whilst reaching for an item, an unknown male took her bag and walked away quickly.

The woman yelled out to passers-by who attempted to help the woman by chasing the man. The man eventually stopped and handed back the bag to a witness before running from the store.

The man was described as Caucasian, 40 years old, 178cm tall, balding, wearing a brown t-shirt and black knee length shorts.

A number of service medals that were stolen from a Petersham home last month have been returned to the owner’s family.

Between Wednesday, October 15 and Monday, October 20 a home on Coronation Avenue was broken into with a number of items stolen including the medals, which belonged to decorated veteran Albert Cassidy, now deceased.

Officers attached to Marrickville Local Area Command were informed of the incident and launched an investigation.

About 9am last Saturday, November 1, a family member was at the Coronation Avenue home, when he discovered the medals in the rear courtyard.

The medals had been wrapped up and are now being examined by forensic specialists.

Service attendant suffers laceration in robbery

Police issue warning over fake traffic infringement emails

Police are appealing for public assistance following an armed robbery at a liquor store in Canterbury last weekend.

Shortly before 4pm on Sunday, November 2, a man entered the store on Canterbury Road and threatened the attendant with a knife while demanding money and fled with a sum of cash. The attendant sustained a laceration to his shoulder during the incident. Police conducted extensive patrols of the surrounding area however the man was not located. He is described as being of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance, aged in his 20s, about 183cm tall and of a skinny build. Please contact Crime Stoppers with any information.

Police are warning people to be wary of emails concerning traffic infringements after a number of NSW residents were sent scam emails encouraging them to pay fake fines.

Last Thursday, October 31, the NSW Office of State Revenue (OSR) issued a public warning after being informed of the scam, believed to have been hatched by criminals in Europe.

The Commander of the Fraud & Cybercrime Squad, Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis, echoed the warning issued by the OSR and reminded NSW residents to make sure they report any suspected scams.

Warning to home renovators Dangers of asbestos need to be understood before carrying out works

ovember is National Asbestos Awareness Month and local renovators, builders, and tradespeople are being urged to be “asbestos aware”.

Marrickville Mayor Mark Gardiner said it is estimated that one in three Australian homes contains asbestos, and that every house built or renovated in the years leading up to 1987 probably contain asbestos.

“We have a lot of older homes, and we have a high number of renovations going on at any given time,” Mayor Gardiner said.

“That’s why every single one of our Development Consents includes an Asbestos Fact Sheet, and why we support Asbestos Awareness Month.

“And for me personally, having lost a friend to mesothelioma, I cannot stress this message enough. Renovators need to know that, as part of the overall cost of a renovation, professional asbestos removal is a small price to pay to protect your family’s health.”

Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency CEO Peter Tighe said the case of Stephen Wickham highlighted the dangers to home renovators.

Peter Tighe: “It is very important that the home owner checks that an asbestos removalist is properly licensed” “In 1994, Stephen commenced DIY renovations on their home, removing corrugated AC [asbestos] fibro sheeting from the garage and replaced part of the fence,

which was made of the same material.

He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2013,” Mr Tighe said.

“Stephen initiated landmark proceed-

ings in the NSW Dust Diseases Tribunal to highlight the increasing number of nonoccupational DIY handyman exposures that have taken place already and the potential for more unnecessary exposures into the future.

“The Asbestos Injuries Compensation Fund (set up by James Hardie) fought the case but agreed to settle the matter on the day when Stephen was to take the stand and give evidence.”

Mr Tighe said asbestos sheeting is found in inner west houses from “fibro” renovations typically made between the 1940s and 1970s but can also be found in kitchens because of its heat and fire retardant properties, in bathrooms because of its water sealing properties and in electrical power boards and circuits because of its electrical insulation properties.

ore than 100 people turned up at Marrickville Library this week to hear author Peter Fitzsimons talk about his latest book Gallipoli. Ten people received a free copy of the book simply by wearing Fitzsimons’ trademark red bandanna to the event.

Fitzsimons has developed a reputation for writing military histories including Kokoda, Tobruk and Nancy Wake.

Marrickville Mayor Mark Gardiner was Master of Ceremonies and described himself as a bit of a history buff.

“I often say if I hadn’t taken a Law degree, I would’ve opted for studying

history instead,” Mayor Gardiner said.

“So I was really keen to hear Peter Fitzsimons in conversation about his new book, Gallipoli.”

He said Peter Fitzsimons is also on the ANZAC Centenary Advisory Board, advising on how we can properly commemorate major events of Australian involvement in World War I. “In a way, this author talk marked the beginning of our Gallipoli anniversary commemorations,” Mayor Gardiner said.

“Marrickville Council has a really splendid series of events planned for the ANZAC centenary, including a street parade, historical exhibition and new public art.”

He said on Perth’s new Citylink rail line, lock-up bike sheds have been built on the platforms so commuters can secure their bike with a swipe card before boarding their train.

“It’s a small cost for a simple initiative that makes a real difference,” he said.

In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says an old mate who has been a near life-long devotee of Batman and Robin comics and movies, has not been the same since doing a tour earlier this year of the Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, California.

Because he’d always thought that those who played The Caped Crusader and his juvenile side-kick in the first Batman movies in the 1960s really did scale the outsides of tall buildings for the sake of Saturday afternoon movie-going kids like himself.

Thus he was horrified to see on his movie-lot tour how it was really done

– and that was by having the crime-fighting duo supposedly scaling tall buildings by merely having them crawling along a wall-like structure laid flat, safely on the studio floor.

Furthermore a picture of the supposed skyscrapers of Gotham City around them was actually projected horizontally on a screen behind them, and while Batman’s cape looked like it was hanging streetwards from his shoulders as he appeared to be climbing vertically, it was simply pulled horizontally from off-screen.

Finally to complete the trick, the movie camera was mounted at 90-degrees to the norm. Don’t go looking for answers if you aren’t prepared for them!

very year, tens of thousands of items are left behind at Sydney Airport and, while the Airport makes every effort to reunite the lost items with their owners, unfortunately hundreds of items are left unclaimed. These are currently being auctioned off with the money raised going to charity.

Sydney Airport General Manager Corporate Affairs, Sally Fielke, said some of the more unusual items in this year’s auction will include a surfboard, a microwave, a blender, musical instruments including ukuleles and violins, a bike and a scooter, along with the usual smartphones, tablets, cameras, designer handbags, sunglasses and fragrances.

“Last year’s auction raised more than $130,000 for charity, which went to a number of worthwhile charities and initiatives and we’re hoping to raise more this year,” Ms Fielke said.

This year’s auction is being held online over a 10-day period with the items organised into five categories, four of which have already started.

The first auction will cover cameras, iPods, docks, gaming consoles, games,

and various electrical goods. It will end next Monday, November 10 at 8.30pm.

The second auction covers communications technology such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. It runs until 8.30pm next Tuesday, November 11.

The third covering jewellery, cosmetics, perfume, handbags, and luggage runs until next Wednesday evening while the fourth covering alcohol and tobacco runs until Thursday evening.

The final auction doesn’t start until 9am tomorrow (Saturday, November 8) and will run until 8.30pm next Friday, November 14. It includes the more eccentric items such as souvenirs, toys, sporting goods, clothing, paintings, artwork and homewares.

The auction is being run by Pickles Auctions. Bidding on each item will start at $1, with descriptions and photos on the Pickles website, www.pickles.com.au. A processing fee of 16.5 per cent (including GST) payable to Pickles will apply in addition to the hammer price on all lots.

Ms Fielke said around 38 million passengers travelled through Sydney Airport last year from all over the world and the items left at the airport reflect this diversity.

After witnessing a lack of knowledge and skills delivering care to our frail and aged, she started running courses in 1990 and was the first to provide an Assistant in Nursing Course.

Joke shirts take too long to read and can lead to awkward situations

“Hey, I like your t-shirt but what exactly does it say there?” is probably a common conversation starter that wearers of slogan tees hear daily. But unfortunately for me they have somehow made it into fashion this season and shoppers can’t seem to get enough of them.

I don’t always understand fashion trends and I am sure that most of us just go along with it anyway but this one just seems completely ridiculous.

Why on earth would someone want to wear a shirt with a joke on it or a witty line, when most of the time people won’t be able to read it due to a crinkle in the fabric or the way you are sitting? It just doesn’t make sense.

There are three particular types of slogan tees that are popular at the moment. The first, and my most hated, is the playon-a-brand-name style. Have you ever seen a person walking around wearing a shirt that says Féline and wonder why they are calling themselves a cat ? That shirt is supposed to be a ‘witty’ play on the French luxury brand Céline. The same goes for ‘homies’ (Hermès) and ‘Ballin’ (Balmain) tops. This is far from classy and upon my first sighting of one, I was not even able to draw out a tiny snigger.

The second type of slogan tee that everyone seems to be wearing at the moment is the funny sentence shirts; you know, the ones that take people a whole minute to read and then another minute to get the joke... They can be funny and definitely offer a conversation starter but I think they are just a nuisance and can lead to awkward situations.

The third most common slogan tee is the one that features some sort of inspirational quote or sentence – one that jumps to mind is ‘believe you can fly’. Do you really think that I am going to take advice from a t-shirt?

Some other types of slogan shirts out there include the ‘keep calm’ shirts, the ‘captain obvious’ type (like a little black dress with ‘little black dress’ written on it), and the descriptive type – seriously, who would wear a shirt that says ‘biatch’?

Before you walk out wearing your ‘love, money, pizza’ shirt, think about what that is actually saying to the people who have a read.

However, looking at the ancestry of dogs, they would generally eat the whole animal carcass which includes the grain-laden stomach contents of their prey and so they have evolved to use nutrients found in grains. Cats, however, are obligate carnivores and can get very little nutrition from non-animal sources of protein.

The most common thing we hear from people this time of year is, ‘Well, Christmas is nearly here, so I’ll start in the New Year’. We generally believe the concept of changing our lifestyles so close to the holidays seems just too hard, however nothing could be further from the truth. It only takes 21 days to form a habit, and in all honesty there are some amazing “Healthy Food” options to have over the festive season that don’t need to set you back from achieving your goals.

With the Australian Christmas being in summer, it’s actually super easy to be eating delicious salads and proteins while still indulging in a cheeky little dessert here and there. It’s also perfect timing because we tend to be more physically active.

The way the world has evolved has led many of us to lead sedentary lifestyles, sitting in front of computers for many hours each day, travelling in our cars driving here to there.

But in summer we find ourselves making beach visits, taking walks to breathe in the summer aromas, cycling, swimming and the like.

Summer is a great opportunity to join local bootcamps or other classes that enable you to get outside and exercise whilst having fun with other like-minded locals. But what’s so important to remember when starting an exercise program is to make sure you’re having fun. The more you dislike exercise, the harder it is to get up each day and do it.

You might like to dance, so why not look up Zumba or a local dance school. Perhaps you’re more the martial arts type and fortunately for you there’s an abundance of martial arts, boxing and kickboxing schools in the Inner West. Or maybe you want to build muscle and increase your athleticism which in turn might find you looking into cross training functional fitness or Crossfit.

Whatever your preference, we are so lucky in the Inner West because we have everything at our finger tips. At the end of the day all you have to do is just go out there, try different things and find what it is you enjoy.

Fall out from epic new single sees band head downunder ith their first album back from their three year hiatus, ‘Save Rock And Roll’, putting Fall Out Boy well and truly back on the musical map, they are certainly striking while the iron is hot with their huge new single ‘Centuries’ and an equally epic ‘Gladiator’-style video to accompany it.

Bass player Pete Wentz told West Life that while the band weren’t planning on writing any new material, the song came about at just the right time.

“Patrick [Stump, vocalist] and I weren’t really planning on working on much and we were on tour in the States with Paramore and Patrick came forward with the song and it just seemed like the time was right,” he said.

“The whole song, and also the video, is basically saying that anybody can become a legend – you’ve got one shot so you’d better make it count and that’s how we all feel about the band. So that song came along and basically the plan for the album was built around that.”

Before the album drops in early 2015, Fall Out Boy will be heading down our way for their first ever festival stint at Soundwave.

While a Fall Out Boy show is a spectacle in and of itself, Wentz said the prospect of a festival bill was always enticing for the band as it was a great breeding ground for new fans.

FALL OUT BOY SOUNDWAVE FEBRUARY 28 “Yeah, man we’ve never played Soundwave before, but it sure looks like a cool festival – what a great lineup,” he said.

“I think we play better to festival crowds because at your own shows everyone is there just to see you, but at festivals there are plenty who aren’t

After cutting their teeth in the late 90s Chicago hardcore punk scene (Wentz played in such bands as Racetraitor, Birthright and Extinction) Fall Out Boy quickly found themselves the darlings of the alternative music press

thanks largely to their first two genrebending records ‘Take This to Your Grave’ and ‘Under the Cork Tree’.

While the second record saw the band crack the Billboard 100, it was their third album ‘Infinity on High’ featuring the runaway hits ‘Thanks fr th Mmrs’ and ‘This Ain’t a Scene It’s an Arms Race’, that really saw the band reach new heights.

Following the release of the follow-up, ‘Follie a Deux’, the band went on a three year hiatus before coming back with ‘Save Rock and Roll’ in 2013. Wentz said that while there was definitely pressure placed on the band internally to come back with a truly “kick arse” record, the external pressure that existed in the ‘Follie a Deux’ sessions was virtually non existent.

“There was so much more outside scrutiny on ‘Follie’ because of the success of ‘Infinity on High’, but with ‘Save Rock and Roll’ there was probably less pressure because we were totally flying under radar – nobody expected anything from us,” he said.

While ‘Save Rock and Roll’ still has echoes of the band’s early punk roots, there is a decidedly more pop flavour to proceedings.

“When we go into the studio, we always want to be the biggest f***ing band on the planet but we’re also a band who aren’t going to write the same album twice – it’s really important, I think, not to set any limitations on yourself,” Wentz said.

Glass is all heart and soul in new album elbourne songwriter Matt Glass is having the Sydney launch of his second album ‘The Space in Between’ at the Newsagency in Marrickville tomorrow, Saturday, November 8.

Glass has been on the Melbourne indie scene for quite some time and won the 2013 Peak Upload competition for unsigned artists. His voice has been likened to the late Jimmy Little while his songs are evocative of Josh Pyke.

He released his first album ‘Famous Last Words’ in 2011 with the single ‘Setting Sun’ leaping to number 1 on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart.

For ‘The Spaces in Between’ he has attracted an all-star supporting cast including slide guitarist Jeff Lang who was a mentor as part of the Peak Upload

‘God Help the Girl’ won the Special Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Starring Australian actress Emily Browning it tells the story of three young musicians who become quick friends and go on to form a band with the help of some locals.

‘Mr Turner’, is the story of painter JMW Turner, known as the ‘Master of Light’ and picked up two awards at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, including best Actor for Timothy Spall.

The festival’s closing film ‘The Imitation Game’ is also a biopic telling the story of Alan Turing who was instrumental in cracking Nazi Germany’s Enigma code during World War II. The film won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

‘A Long Way Down’ is based on the best-selling novel by Nick Hornby. It stars Aussie Toni Collette, former James Bond Pierce Brosnan and Aaron Paul from ‘Breaking Bad’ in a feel-good look at being an outcast.

Brosnan also stars in ‘The Love Punch’, a classic heist comedy with Emma Thompson, Timothy Spall and writer/director Nick Nevern.

The retrospective series features six films from the sixties including a special 50th anniversary screening of ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, which captures the true birth of British Beatlemania in one of the most innovative and refreshing music movies ever made.

Other sixties flicks include ‘Billy Liar’ (1963), ‘Zulu’ (1964), ‘Darling’ (1965), ‘If...’

(1968) and another classic comedy ‘The Italian Job’ (1969).

For those looking for newer talent, there are films like ‘71’, the debut feature from Yann Demange that tells a tale of a young British solider who must find his way to safety after being accidentally abandoned by his unit in the dangerous streets of Northern Ireland.

Starring: Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum The Jump Street boys are back. And this time they’re poking fun at the idea of the ‘sequel’ in their follow up to 2012’s ‘21 Jump Street’, which was – very loosely – based on the TV series of the same name, which gave Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) his big break.

After their hilarious adventures as undercover cops posing as high school students in the first film it’s no surprise that the sequel follows much the same plot. Except this time Schmidt, played by Jonah Hill, and Jenko, played by Channing Tatum are college students.

Once again they get themselves in some very bizarre situations as they attempt to crack the case and prove themselves as genuine cops.

The beauty of this sequel is that it doesn’t take itself seriously. The writers are well aware of the cliches and pitfalls of the follow up movie and use that as subject matter for many of the laughs throughout the movie. It’s a really great film for a lazy night in.

‘Love, Rosie’ is an Irish romantic comedy based on Where Rainbows End, the 2004 novel by Cecelia Ahern. The story follows Rose Dunne, played by Lily Collins, and Alex Stewart, played by Sam Claflin who have been best friends since they were just five-years-old. After years of being joined at the hip the friends are separated when Alex moves to Boston to go to college.

Though the plan is to have Rosie join him things change when she finds out she’s pregnant to her ex-boyfriend.

While Alex is enjoying college life in Boston Rosie is in Ireland raising her child. But that’s not the end of the story.

‘Love, Rosie’ asks the question: do we only get one shot at true love.

Lily Collins also starred in the 2009 film ‘The Blind Side’ and 2012’s ‘Mirror Mirror’ while Sam Claflin will no doubt be familiar to audiences as Finnick Odair from ‘The Hunger Games’ series. His other roles include William in 2012’s ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ and Philip in 2011’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’.

Author Cecelia Ahern also wrote PS, I Love You which was adapted into the 2007 film of the same name.

DAN DULTAN DIRTY GROUND EP Out Now Dan Sultan certainly hasn’t wasted much time. In April this year he released a new album, ‘Blackbird’, followed it up with a national tour from June through to August, and now the talented musician is releasing a new solo EP titled ‘Dirty Ground’, which is full of stripped back tracks.

Recorded in one day – yes, you read right, just one day – with Jan Skubizewski, the EP features songwriting from some very well-known Aussie musicians including Something for Kate’s Paul Dempsey on the track ‘Mountaintop’ and Paul Kelly on the title track.

he Yarra Valley has garnered an enviable reputation over the past couple of decades for Chardonnays out of makers like Toolangi who planted their first vines there back in December 1995.

And the latest release from this small family-owned operation, their 2012, is a veritable explosion in the glass of what Chardonnay is all about, with predominantly citrus grapefruit flavours to the fore and quite extraordinary length (how long the flavour lasts in the back of the throat after swallowing).

Owners Garry and Julie Hounsell went in hard with the secateurs for this wine, pruning back heavily to maximise fruit flavour and quality as Yarra Valley vines, with the climate they enjoy, can be quite prolific producers. And interestingly, after being harvested, the fruit was processed at two separate wineries, Yering Station and Oakridge, and the resultant blend put together at Yering Station.

This 2012 Toolangi Chardonnay is nicely priced for a premium drop at $25, and with its full-on varietal flavours makes for an ideal partner with everything on the table from simple roast chicken, to grilled lobster if you’re maybe celebrating, or for a more casual outdoor barbecue of veal chops.

One to note: If that Toolangi Chardonnay was all about flavour in a white wine, Rosemount Estate’s MV Collection 2012 Shiraz is all about flavour in a red wine. This drop is all flavour, flavour and more flavour – with savoury blackberry to the fore. Pay $25.

Double whammy for House Rules Readers of this column know how much I love the Channel Seven home renovation show ‘House Rules’, so you can almost imagine my excitement when I found out it was coming back next year with two seasons.

Just like ‘The Block’ on Nine, ‘House Rules’ will air during the first and second half of 2015. The show really took off this year but the move is a surprise.

Other local productions Seven will definitely be bringing back next year include ‘My Kitchen Rules’, ‘The X Factor’, ‘Dancing with the Stars’, ‘Winners and Losers’ and ‘Home and Away’.

However, there’s no news yet on ‘The Amazing Race Australia’, ‘Beauty and the Geek’ and ‘The Big Adventure’, which is on our screens now and is a new ‘Survivor’ style show.

Foxtel has announced an interesting new show in conjunction with Channel Ten to air next year. Titled ‘Gogglebox’, the weekly observational series will capture the reactions of ordinary Australians as they watch the nightly news, and cheer their sporting teams.

While Channel Nine are still to make a decision on whether ‘Big Brother’ will return next year, it hasn’t stopped China from announcing their first ever series of the hit reality show. Despite poor ratings here, ‘Big Brother’ is still huge around the world showing in multiple countries.

Channel Ten will be pleased to hear that many of their new US shows have been given the green light for full season orders. Shows include ‘Madam Secretary’, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ and ‘Scorpion’. Meanwhile, ‘Stalker’ is set to air on Channel Nine sometime soon.

Lastly, Foxtel also announced a number of new and returning productions for 2015 last week.

They include: ‘Wentworth’, ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’, ‘Real Housewives’, ‘Selling Houses Australia’, ‘Deadline Gallipoli’, ‘A Place To Call Home’ and ‘The Flash’.

Consumers are heading to the Internet to do their car research, and TOYOTA is at top of mind

Toyota is the most popular brand for online searches among people looking to buy new and used vehicles, according to a new report.

More people stipulated Toyota as their brand of choice ahead of any other brand when searching for vehicles at consumer website CarsGuide.com.au.

Toyota vehicles also claimed five of the top 10 online searches, based on internal Google analytics figures released by the site for the three months to the end of September.

Toyota LandCruiser was the “most searched” vehicle while other Toyota vehicles in the top 10 were HiLux (3rd), RAV4 (5th), Corolla (7th) and Camry (9th).

As well as being the most popular brand overall, Toyota also attracted the top three inquiries among people looking for SUVs (LandCruiser, RAV4 and Kluger), the top two for utes (HiLux and LandCruiser) and the most searches for a hatch (Corolla).

Toyota’s executive director of sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the company appreciated the strong support for the brand among consumers.

“Toyota takes nothing for granted, so we are continually enhancing our organisation and dealer network to ensure we continue to improve the level of service to customers at all stages of ownership,” Mr Cramb said.

It seems modern technology has done nothing to hurt Toyota’s incredible hold on the industry.

St George posts formidable total to secure T20 Cup win

t George are the T20 Cup champions after defeating both Sydney University and Randwick Petersham in the finals at the Sydney Cricket Ground last weekend.

In the first preliminary final, defending champions Randwick Petersham scored 126 for the loss of seven wickets off their 20 overs with only skipper Adam Semple (47) making more than 20. In reply, St George reached the target with nine balls to spare and six wickets in hand.

In the second preliminary final, Sydney University didn’t look to have scored enough after their top order failed leaving the Students struggling at 6 for 75 in the 15th over.

However, some lusty hitting from James Larkin (34) and David Miller (31 not out) towards the end lifted them to 7 for 128.

Bankstown started the chase aggressively and reached 100 for the loss of only two wickets but in the 18th over Liam Robertson bowled Cormack, Burke and Wells to take the wind out of their sails.

Only David Miller’s 50 not out off 33 balls added some late innings respectability to the total as they limped to 5 for 129, handing St George a 44 run victory.

St George received a cheque for $7,000 from Kingsgrove Sports for their victory with McCabe named player of the final. As runners up, Sydney University received a consolation cheque for $3,000.
