A

s debate continues over Marrickville Council’s issuing of an expression of interest for developers for the old Marrickville Hospital site, the Federal Greens candidate for Grayndler, Hall Greenland, has launched his party’s viable option for social housing at the site.

The plan would unlock billions of dollars for social housing and end the chronic shortage of housing that is crippling the Inner West.

He launched the Stronger Social Housing System policy in Marrickville yesterday and said there needs to be something done now to ensure sustainable housing is provided for the community.

“Our plan will take the heat out of the rental market and help make housing more affordable for all people living in the Inner West,” he said.

A report released by the Family and Community Services Housing NSW shows expected waiting times for general applicants looking for one to four-bedroom accommodation on the housing register for Leichhardt and Marrickville include a waiting list of more than 10 years.

Council also recently commissioned a report, which found Council could viably triple affordable housing with development of the Marrickville Hospital site.

The hospital site is worth millions of dollars, and is owned by the Council. All the more reason Marrickville Council could deliver social housing for those who need it most according to Greens Councillor for North Ward, Sylvie Ellsmore.

“While the Greens have serious concerns about over-development at the old Marrickville Hospital site, we have also been working actively with Council to ensure that whatever eventuates on site includes new affordable housing stock,” she said.

Cr Ellsmore said she would like to see not-for-profit developers apply for development of the site.

Crazy election ride has only just got started

A

round election time – everyone goes a little crazy.

The politicians, the staffers, the press gallery, the public.

It’s kind of like ants before a thunderstorm.

The press gallery are clamouring over being the fi rst to predict a correct election date. September 7 and 21 are still the most likely by the way – but the reasons for each vary, sometimes wildly.

I believe that when it comes to predicting the election many journalists covering federal politics are clouded by their own self interest – almost willing it to be over and done with. We all love the rough and tumble of a campaign – but it’s been an exhausting three years.

A perfect storm if you like – the advent of a fast paced 24-hour news channel where news is picked up and spat out every four hours. The frenetic pace is also the product of a relentless Opposition Leader, minority government and the constant undermining of Julia Gillard by Kevin Rudd.

Election time is crunch time.

Let me make a few observations...

Tony Abbott is feeling the pinch. All complacency is gone.

It is still his election to lose, but he’s been forced into a defensive strategy. In just the last week he’s visited electorates that Labor might snatch back – including Dunkley in Victoria and Dawson in Queensland.

In NSW, campaign resources are being redirected to the most marginal Labor seats like Greenway, Lindsay and Reid.

There’s concern among Liberal insiders about the seat of Macquarie – Labor candidate Louise Markus has been campaigning for three years. It’s a true swing seat that stretches from the base of the Blue Mountains, all the way to Katoomba. Th is is a Labor wild card playing on the minds of conservatives.

Mr Abbott is showing signs of frustration too. The Government’s PNG solution is cutting through – the electorate likes it and seem to believe it will work.

Usually so frustratingly on message, the Opposition let loose this week – at me.

I asked him about whether the government is sending a stronger message – I was met with a defensive “Laura, please. Please Laura. You are talking about a Prime Minister who closed down the Pacific Solution... Come on, Laura. Come on.”

Our more psycho viewers were quick to jump on this as a misogyny rant – that it was absolutely not. But, it was a plea to the press gallery not to forget Kevin Rudd’s record on border protection.

Kevin Rudd on the other hand is using possibly his last days as Prime Minister to the best of his ability.

And if anyone was under the illusion that the trip to Afghanistan was just for troop morale – sorry to disappoint – but it was as much for Kevin as it was the ADF. Riddle me this – all commercial TV news stations plus the ABC and their cameras were invited along on the secret mission – but not one newspaper journalist.

That, my friend, smells like a publicity stunt.

The proper campaign is coming. I’ll be on the bus. There’ll be plenty more stunts to come.

Smacking ban unfair, unproven and heightens Nanny State threat

I

found myself – surprise, surprise – in the chocolate aisle of a local shopping centre last week, when I was joined by a family whose young toddler was screaming so loudly that Jimmy Barnes would have been proud.

After a couple of attempts to shut little Johnny up, his father laid down the law: “If you don’t stop shouting, you’ll get a smack”.

Within seconds, silence. But if looks could talk, silence would be the last thing everyone in the aisle would have heard, as two people in particular turned around and looked at this father as if he’d just threatened to throw his child into a pit of tigers to fend for himself.

Scenes like that one have been created by this incessant, frivolous debate about whether parents should be banned from smacking their children.

The latest round of discussion over the issue comes after the Royal Australasian College of Physicians said that parents

who smack their children should be subjected to criminal charges.

Such bans do already exist in Sweden, Italy and New Zealand.

Those who support smacking bans aren’t doing it for cheap publicity, of course, and they seriously believe that the welfare of children will be improved should we criminalise such actions from parents. I, however, strongly disagree.

To suggest parents who discipline their child via smacking are in the same category as those who abuse their children over a prolonged period of time – whether it be physically or sexually – is just plain wrong and an unfair blight on the huge number of parents who have raised successful, strong children – smacking included.

Not all kids turn out right and some parents are to blame.

But if smacking your child is to become a crime, then we’re not just turning into a Nanny State, we’ve become one.

Former police officer guest of honour at Education Week

ddie Billett’s seen a lot in his time as a police officer in the Inner West. His journey started as a cadet in 1969, eventually becoming a Community Service Liaison Officer as Inspector at Marrickville Local Area Command where he retired last year.

It seemed appropriate then that as someone who has done so much for the community and Marrickville Public School, he was guest of honour at the school on Wednesday during Education Week celebrations.

The principal Kerry Chambers said they chose to honour him on that day because of its significance. “We chose to honour Inspector Billett on Wednesday because it was a significant day on our school calendar. It is the day we celebrate public education.

He has become a valued member of our school community due to his success and effort in making connections with our students as they grow into young adults,� she said.

As well as a strong involvement within the community he also had established a solid association with the indigenous community in regional areas of NSW, in particular Brewarrina. “I’ve been involved with the indigenous community since 2007, with the Aboriginal Youth Program ‘Bush to Beach’ where young Aboriginal youths come to the city from far reaching

orking from home may not be all that it’s cracked up to be. A recent report by McCrindle Research found that of 250 people surveyed that worked from home, 58 per cent said they could do with more face-to-face contact whilst only 25 per cent said the work-life balance worked.

Tempe resident Pauline Dorahy-Ellem works from home three days a week and two days are spent at the office.

A Services Manager for a call centre for an e-commerce software and online retail trading company, she said the work-life balance did work for her because she was in the comfort of her own home, but always maintains a professional outlook.

“I manage a call centre overseas from my home and I communicate regularly with my staff using Skype. My presentation has to be professional and that can mean late into the night,” she said.

“There’ll be times when I’ll have to make myself available to my staff, sometimes at 10pm and I still have to look presentable,” she said.

But she likes the arrangement, despite one major con: not having the interaction with other staff.

“You don’t enjoy lunches, birthdays, and general chit chat with fellow staff.”

Hoarders rescued from blaze just in time

Senseless attack: Police station window broken About 12.15pm on Tuesday afternoon a person has thrown a piece of concrete through the eastern side window of the Petersham Police Station, which landed in the kitchen area. Police who were in the station at the time have heard a smashing sound and attended the kitchen area, noting a piece of concrete on the floor and smashed glass. lames engulfed the house belonging to an elderly couple in Marrickville, with the couple rescued in the nick of time.

At around 9.15pm last Sunday night, emergency services responded to two triple zero calls to the Edinburgh Road home. Upon arrival fi re crews made their way to the front of the home when they saw flames coming from the front window.

Superintendent Tom Cooper from Fire and Rescue NSW said crews saw a woman alight.

“When the fi re crews arrived they went straight to the front of the house. There was a woman on fi re standing at the front door. I would say about 20 per cent of the right side of her body was on fi re,” he said.

The 68-year-old woman was taken to Royal Prince Alfred hospital, in a critical condition, where she was later transferred to the burns unit at Concord Hospital. Her 71-year-old husband was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.

A neighbour who did not want to be named said it was a horrible sight.

“My husband and I went outside at about 9pm.

Within minutes the fi re brigades arrived. I looked across to see flames coming out from the house and smoke everywhere,” she said.

She said if it wasn’t for the quick response from the emergency services her house may have gone up in flames too because of the sheer size of the blaze.

“When my husband and I walked out of our home, if it had been another five minutes our house would have burnt down,” she said.

The night was particularly unpleasant because of the cold and it was a long night as they couldn’t return to their house until around 3am on Monday.

The fi re was still smouldering at 9am.

2. KEEP RECORDS – Write an inventory list including serial numbers and accurate descriptions of your items. Th is will assist Police when making a report and also help you make an insurance claim. List the serial, make and model numbers and keep the original receipts of valuable items and store this information along with any valuation certificates in a safe place.

He has shown a remarkable talent for writing. He recently won a scholarship to attend a writing master class at the State Library of NSW with best-selling author Ursula Dubosarsky.

The master class was designed for writers aged 13 to 18-years enthusiastic about writing, developing their writing

Ashley was identified as an outstanding student by Angela Rega who is a teacher at Marrickville High School.

The perks of breastfeeding World Breastfeeding Week raises awareness of benefits for mum and bub BASIL NAIMET

Carmel Kelly who works as a Clinical Midwife Consultant at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital said that breastfeeding is an ideal way to feed an infant, and could avoid future health issues.

“Babies who are not exclusively breastfed in the fi rst six months are at more risk of developing chronic and acute diseases, such as ear infections, asthma, SIDS, obesity and respiratory illnesses,” Ms Kelly said.

Mums’ chances of developing breast and ovarian cancer are also reduced, and there is a reduction in developing other medical problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life.

With World Breastfeeding Week running from August 1 to 7, the message is ‘Breastfeed for good health that lasts a lifetime’ and the focus is on supporting mothers and families to continue breastfeeding for longer.

“The World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding for two years and beyond, as long as both mother and baby are happy. Providing a supportive environment for mothers and their families is one way we can encourage mothers to breastfeed for longer and reap health benefits,” Ms Kelly said.

Sydney Local Health District supports women to breastfeed in a number of ways.

The District promotes a Breastfeeding and Employment Policy.

Elissa Kiggins, a District staff member, has just returned to work six months after giving birth to Zach and continues to breastfeed as he nears 12months.

“Thankfully, I have the support of my husband, workplace, colleagues and our childcare centre so that Zach can receive his breastmilk when at day care,” she said.

Stretch your family: Young teens in need of foster care

C

hildren in Foster care is perhaps something society doesn’t give much thought to. Last month Fostering NSW launched a huge campaign to raise awareness of the issue of foster care.

Marrickville based not-for-profit Stretch-A-Family is seeking families or single people over the age of 18 to provide adolescent children from the ages from seven to 18 with a healthy and sound life.

Over the coming months Stretch-AFamily will be hosting foster care information sessions encouraging people to come along and fi nd out more about being a Foster Carer. The sessions will take

place at their Marrickville head office at 198 Marrickville Road, Marrickville on Wednesday, August 14.

CEO Virginia Texeira said amongst the many not-for-profit agencies involved with this type of service, their organisation targets a particular age group. “The point of difference for us is we specialise in foster care for adolescents from ages seven to 18-year-olds. We are a small agency, which is specifically designed to meet the needs of this age group,� Ms Texeira said.

t goes without saying that one of the joys of being a child is getting your hands dirty.

That was certainly the case last Friday when children at SDN Linthorpe Street Children’s Education and Care Centre in Newtown took part in the planting of trees and plants as part of Tree Day. The initiative, run by Planet Ark, is aimed at educating children about the importance of looking after the

environment and caring for the land.

The children planted fruit trees, vegetable and herb seedlings that will be used by the Centre’s cook for the children’s lunches.

Don’t be too over-protective

o parent ever wants to see their child hurt, but completely removing any chance of a child playing and getting a few bumps and scrapes can have serious longer term effects. Th is can lead to a lot more pain down the track than the tears shed over a grazed knee.

Of course a parent is responsible for making sure any play is safe and suitable for their child. But can you be too careful?

Children who are allowed to take physical risks, learn resilience and become more active, says a report that urges parents and teachers to overcome their playground fears.

There are just as many risks associated with not letting children take everyday risks as letting them take on reasonable challenges, says University of Sydney Professor Anita Bundy.

She is particularly concerned that physical inactivity persists into adulthood and can contribute to the development of chronic diseases.

She will tell an occupational therapy conference in Adelaide that children should be allowed to fall and pick themselves up and fail at tasks so they learn resilience.

She bases her view on a multi-university study at 12 primary schools involving children aged five to seven and their parents.

“Parents also need to think about what motivates them. Are they really worried about their child being hurt or are they more worried about what people will think if their child is hurt?”

So stopping your child from jumping off that log may be teaching them a whole lot more than not falling over. What else are they missing out on if they never try things or get up after a fall?

e have all heard or seen the annoying ads loudly proclaiming some wonder drug that will help every guy last longer in the bedroom.

And there’s the classic little line at the end of so many gimmick adverts saying “results may vary”, which is how they really say “after you have spent your money and tried our product nothing may actually happen”.

One sure way to real ‘bedroom’ improvement is clean living.

New research shows this is key to men remaining virile.

The new research in the Medical Journal of Australia shows men who are fit and healthy are at least risk of erectile dysfunction.

Researchers say the likelihood of erectile dysfunction can increase once men hit the age of 45, but smoking, heavy drinking, and sedentary lifestyle conditions can lead to dramatic increases in the risk.

Researcher Associate Professor David Smith from Cancer Council NSW says about 80 per cent of men aged 75 and older have moderate or complete erectile dysfunction.

But you don’t have to wait that long if you would rather not be bothered by all that blood flow going south!

He says current heavy smokers are 86 per cent more likely to have erectile

problems than other men and being obese doubles the risk.

The link between smoking and erectile dysfunction is strongest in younger men, and the more they smoke the more likely their equipment will let them down.

There is even evidence suggesting smoking affects testosterone levels and also makes any erection less effective, as in a ‘smaller’ result!

The good news is that doctors may now have a new strategy to help people quit smoking.

British surveys found one in two smokers said they would quit to improve their sex appeal and 88 per cent of smokers did not realise smoking is a major cause of impotence.

For many people, the long-term fear of cancer or heart disease isn’t enough to motivate them to quit, or worse, it can backfi re by increasing stress and, in turn, the urge to smoke – but the promise of immediate and measurable improvements where it counts might be just the incentive male smokers need.

So next time some young guy thinks a lit cigarette hanging limply out the corner of his mouth looks cool, he might have to get used to another useless limp thing hanging off him.

GREEK PLAY HAS A SERIOUS MESSAGE FOR AUDIENCE W

hen it comes to cancer nothing could be more serious. But there is a stigma associated with the disease in the community.

Multicultural Health Service in conjunction with the Cancer Institute NSW is co-ordinating an innovative theatre series called ‘Alive and out there’. It is designed to explore the stigma that cancer has for people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD).

The Hellenic Art Theatre is presenting ‘Zoe’s Gift’, an intergenerational dramatic comedy exploring themes of cancer and stigma, and the impact of family secrets.

Figures from the Cancer Institute of NSW show: • On average one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with a form of cancer in their lifetime.

• Early detection can lead to significantly improved outcomes for a number of cancers. Cancer Institute NSW coordinate a Cervical Screening and a Breastscreen program.

• A number of lifestyle behaviours can help to prevent cancer. Not smoking, protecting the skin and eyes from the sun, making healthy food choices and exercising regularly can assist in preventing many cancers.

Manager of the Multicultural Health Services Dr Astrid Perry said theatre was an effective way of addressing the stigma and barriers associated with cancer for CALD communities.

The Greek community was targeted in

particular because of their large population in the Marrickville area.

“The Greek community has a very strong tradition in community theatre, and previous experience with the Multicultural

Health Service has determined that theatre based health promotion is an effective and meaningful way of sharing health information”, he said.

‘Zoe’s Gift’ will be performed in Greek

with English subtitles. All performances will be held at the Hellenic Art Theatre, Building 36, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville.

alented Australian singer-songwriter Josh Pyke has conquered the charts and now he is set to win over crowds too when he embarks on tour.

The skilled musician, who has been a name to watch in the Australian music industry since 2007, will bring his melodic tunes to the stage of the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on Friday, August 23.

His tour follows on from the exciting news that Pyke’s new album ‘The Beginning and The End of Everything’ has hit number 7 on the ARIA Chart and number 4 on the iTunes chart, becoming his fourth top 10 ARIA record in a row.

The album is an emotionally deep and sophisticated offering that explores ideas of desire, death and the legacy people leave on the world – themes that Pyke believes influence all the decisions he makes in life.

Now I’m usually very positive about

new TV shows but it’s hard to get excited about Channel Seven’s new one called ‘Slideshow’. If you haven’t seen the promos, ‘Slideshow’ sees two teams of Australian personalities compete in a series of improvisations each week. Hosted by Grant Denyer (enough said I think), teams will have to improvise songs, dances, mimes and sketches for their team captains. Sounds like ‘Thank God You’re Here’ on steroids to me! One improvisation show is enough!

Foxtel has just been made available to more and more people after subscriptions were launched this week on PC and Mac. Foxtel Play features 40 live channels and hundreds of on demand catch-up titles.

There are four basic genre-based packages priced at $25 for one, $35 for two, $45 for three and $50 for four. Sport

and Movies can be added on for an extra $25 each. Meanwhile, Foxtel is set to shut down its 3D channel (ch 201) at the end of August because frankly no one is watching and it’s a waste of time.

Lastly, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) is coming to Foxtel channel Discovery Home and Health this weekend.

Beginning this Sunday, August 4 at 7.30pm, OWN programming will air each week in the same timeslot and feature three shows back-to-back including ‘Oprah’s Next Chapter’ at 7.30pm, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show: Behind the Scenes’ at 8.30pm and ‘America with Lisa Ling’ at 9.30pm. Still unscheduled to also premiere is ‘Super Soul Sunday’ where Oprah presents programs that nourish your mind, body and spirit – this is sure to catch a lot of Oprah fans’ eyes.

Sport World champ to TV star Martial artist Manav isn’t afraid of performing on any stage BASIL NAIMET

etting to the top in any endeavour isn’t easy. In the world of sport no truer words have been spoken.

Just ask Hakan Manav who recently competed in the All Styles martial arts competition in the United States.

The Marrickville athlete has been crowned the US Open World Martial Arts Champion.

Around 40 countries competed in the championships that were held in Orlando, Florida.

The 25-year-old is a fi fth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has been involved in martial arts in one form or another for over 20 years. His pedigree is pretty handy too.

His father is the Grand Master at the Australian Martial Arts centre in Marrickville.

Manav received fi rst place in two divisions.

“I won the Extreme Breaking category which means I have to break a number of boards. The judges look at the degree of difficulty in breaking them; that determines the winner,” he said.

The second division is Creative Breaking.

“In this category I needed to demonstrate certain technique and break boards that will

demonstrate power, precision and variety. In one attempt I broke eight boards,” he said.

In total, throughout the competition, he broke 40 to 50 boards. Manav is taking his academy’s talents to television too.

There are eight people from the academy who have been entered in Channel Nine’s

‘Australia’s Got Talent’ series and will be performing martial arts but with a twist. It’ll include a comedy element. Manav is the coach, lead performer and choreographer.

“We are doing a combination of sequences including a comedy routine that is entertaining,” he said.
