M
arrickville State Emergency Services (SES) had a glimpse of their new $2.5 million premises in S ydenham on Tuesday, with the turning of the first sod by Mayor Jo Haylen. The SE S i s c urrently l ocated on L ivingstone Road, ho wever t he s ite i s no l onger s uitable t o maintain their operations. Once constructed, the new building on Railway Road, Sy denham, w ill pro vide t he v olunteer emergency ser vices w ith m ore s pace t o s afely house its operations and emergency vehicles. Bob Baker from Marrickville SES said the new building w as 1 0 y ears i n th e m aking a nd w ill provide quicker responses. “Rapid response is crucial. The new building will facilitate our three vehicles and flood boat which means we can get to the vehicles quickly,” he said. Mr Baker said to get to their vehicles and returning t hem f rom a d ay’s w ork w as not pr actical. However the new building would provide instant access to the vehicles. Marrickville SES currently have 61 active

Mayor Jo Haylen said the upgrade is a huge positive for the community.

I k now ou r re sidents t ake g reat comfort f rom k nowing t he SE S i s ju st a phone call away. Their fluoro orange uniforms are a very welcomed s ight d uring a ny k ind of e mergency,” Cr Haylen said. Work on t he n ew b uilding i s e xpected t o b e completed by late 2014.
