arrickville SES flood assistance crews were on standby near the Cooks River during heavy rains on Monday. Local controller Michael Carney said the Marrickville SES received 15 calls for help, mostly for roofi ng or fallen tree jobs but also to pump rain water out of a Dulwich Hill unit block’s basement car park. “We had a warning from the Bureau [of Meteorology] on Monday afternoon that the weather might be really bad after midnight,” Mr

Carney said. He said the SES also monitored low-lying areas near the Cooks River at Riverside Crescent, Illawarra Road, Wharf Street and Cahill Place in Marrickville and Bay Street at Tempe. “We had two crews or 16 members operational on a level two flood response. We took our flood boat as well, just in case we had flood issues,” he said. “During the day we actually had to have our flood technicians on stand-by as well.” Mr Carney expressed relief that a weather bureau warning for winds of up to 125km/hr had not eventuated and that only heavy rain

eventuated from the low pressure system. Th roughout the day from 7am until 9pm, Marrickville Council workers cleared small, localised flooding of roads. A Marrickville Council spokesman said staff attended 11 sites to clean out about 38 pits which had caused some flooding across the local government area. These included at Lord Street Newtown, Riverside Crescent Marrickville, Wardell Road Petersham, Carrington Road Tempe, Henry Lane and Henry Street, Bolton Street in St Peters, Victoria Road Marrickville and Bedford Street Camperdown.
