The death of Charlotte Dawson last weekend was tragically sad – a life taken way too soon in such rotten circumstances.

Not s urprisingly g iven s ome of t he more h igh profile struggles that Charlotte faced, there’s been a call for the powers that be to really have a look at cyber bullying to see what we need to do to curb its growth and the tragedy it causes.

For a wh ile t here, I ad mit t hat I w as i n t he brigade of people who said, simply, “turn it off”. If it affects you so badly, deactivate your Facebook account, stop looking at Twitter and get into the real world.

I prob ably no w more t han ev er u nderstand that sometimes that’s simply not possible. These days, social media is used for education and work as m uch a s i t i s f or f un a nd g ames, he nce t he negative side can be unavoidable.

I t hink o ne o f t he b ig p roblems h ere i s t hat people still can’t accept cyber bullying as a form of torment on p ar, if not worse, than schoolyard or workplace bullying. As a society we still seem to have the mentality that bullying has to involve punches being thrown in the playground.

And because that acceptance doesn’t exist, it’s often the more mature people walking among us who are the perpetrators.

Let me give you an example. This week, Channel Nine announced that Erin Molan would be a permanent member of ‘The Footy Show’ panel.

Some o f t he c omments p osted a bout N ine’s announcement a re di sgusting, di sgraceful a nd shameful. But when you click into the profiles of those doi ng t he keyboard b ashing, it’s a mazing what you discover.

Women with respectable jobs. Men with wives and k ids. Fa mily p eople who w e w ould c all ‘normal’ any other day of the week and probably live their lives with respect and dignity. Why, then, do they act like this on social media?

Erin Molan is hopefully smart enough to not read t his c rap – bu t wh at i f she d id? H ow c an anyone predict another person’s response?

High p rofile p eople in deed f ace s crutiny a nd negativity – that’s the nature of the beast.

But some of the comments that end up on social media sites cross every possible line imaginable – somehow, it brings the worst out of good people.

Cyber bullying is a disgraceful blight on our society a nd on ly get ting w orse. W e ne ed t o somehow change the very bad road we are going down. If we don’t, stories like Charlotte Dawson will keep happening.

What’s worse, the stories you don’t hear about on the 6pm news will keep happening too.

News in numbers A man is in hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a train at Marrickville this week.

About 12.55pm on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, emergency services were called to Marrickville Railway Station

year old man following reports a man had been hit by a train.

“It is believed the man was crossing the tracks between platform one and

The 41-year-old man suffered serious leg injuries as a result of the collision and was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

There were significant disruptions to train services on the Bankstown line with many commuters opting to avoid the train system.

Investigations by NSW Police and emergency services into the collision are continuing. Call Crime Stoppers if you have information about this incident.

Train commuters are being reminded that passengers should access platforms via the walkways provided and avoid accessing the railway tracks at all costs.

Families in Grayndler will be among the top 20 electorates hardest hit by the Governments’s new GP tax in Australia, according to Grayndler MP Anthony Albanese.

New Medicare analysis reveals Grayndler will pay more than $5.5 million in tax each year, just to see the local doctor.

“It is a shameful indictment of the Abbott Government that they would consider charging Australians who can least afford it to see the doctor,” Mr Albanese said.

“What’s more is that Tony Abbott promised Australians before the election he would not touch Medicare.

Friends of Erskineville (FOE) was formed in 2008 by a sm all group of locals and has now grown to a sizeable membership with over 1, 200 p eople. T hey a re p assionate about s ocial a nd e conomic i ssues t hat affect their suburb.

Elected President and local Darren Jenkins, who i s a lso a b arrister s aid he looked forward to taking the fight to those in government.

“I love living here and I want Erskineville to be the best it can be. That means standing up for better facilities and services for our c ommunity a nd i nsisting t hat l ocal development b e s ustainable a nd s mart,” Mr Jenkins said.

He s aid n ot e nough d etail or p lanning had b een t hought t hrough w ith re cent developments resulting in a lack of infrastructure.

“Erskineville’s s treets a re c logged, making p arking ne ar home of ten i mpossible. Traffic is choking the village at peak times and there is barely standing room on

the t rains. A ll of t his w ill be made worse when Erskineville’s population doubles in t he n ext f ew y ears w ith t he A shmore Precinct Development,” he said.

“There is a great sense of community in Erskineville a nd F OE’s j ob i s t o a mplify the energy of everyone who lives here and to get the best for them, whether they are renters or o wners, who h ave l ived he re a few months or for 50 years. To do that job, FOE ne eds t o prop erly e ngage w ith t he community.”

The group has got the ball rolling on one of the suburb’s housing issues.

“We a ll l ove t he c haracter of t he i nner west, but Marrickville has less open space than m ost o ther a reas o f S ydney. T hat makes ou r p arks a nd pl aygrounds t ruly valuable assets,” Cr Haylen said.

Around 3.40am on M onday, p olice were p atrolling th e Dul wich Hill a rea when t hey s aw smo ke c oming f rom a unit complex nearby.

On arrival police observed fire-fighters already on s cene e xtinguishing t he blaze, with a number of residents already evacuated. P olice c ontinued w ith t he evacuation re moving t he re mainder of residents from the building.

Luckily n o p ersons w ere i njured a s a result of t he f ire. W hen e xtinguished, it appeared that the fire had been deliberately l it, w ith a n a ccelerant l ocated nearby. Police are continuing their investigation in to the incident.

No-one injured in deliberately lit fire at unit complex

A bout 6 pm on W ednesday, p olice a nd em ergency services w ere c alled t o a b usiness on Mitchell Street after reports a 19-year-old man had been pinned against a wall by a truck carrying soft drink bottles.

Police w ere t old t he m an w as i n a driveway when the moving truck pinned him a gainst a w all. T he m an s uffered serious he ad, c hest, a nd t orso i njuries, and a c rushed a rm. H e w as t aken t o Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he is undergoing surgery. The truck had been parked on the street and had no driver.

Last T hursday a t a bout 1 pm, p olice observed t wo m ales m ake c ontact with each other in the car park of a u nit complex on Illawarra Road.

At t his t ime p olice o bserved a n exchange of i tems b etween t he t wo males b efore going t heir s eparate w ays.

Police i mmediately mo ved in, s topped the pair and spoke to them, and as result both males were searched.

One m ale w as f ound i n p ossession of c annabis wh ich w as w eighed a nd deemed supply quantity. The other male was s earched a nd f ound i n p ossession of a l arge sum of c ash. Both males were arrested a nd t aken t o N ewtown P olice Station. B oth w ill f ace N ewtown L ocal Court on March 18.

The m an s tole t he w oman’s h andbag, which contained ID and a sm all amount of cash. He was last seen running along Sydenham Road.

The w oman s uffered br uising a nd a c ut t o t he b ack o f h er h ead. S he w as treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Police are now investigating.

One of t hose who a ttended w as O wen Bennett, 91, from West Ryde who said he changed his age to be part of the cadets in the 1930’s. “ I w as 1 2- years- old w hen I e nlisted, but I c hanged my age to 13, with the DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs),” he said.

The intersection has been the subject of much debate and stress over the years, but Cr L eary says enough is enough a nd t hat Council m ust immediately commence work on a long term solution.

“I have put this motion to Council for the third time in the hope that something will be done permanently,” he said.

“I’m c oncerned t hat i t’s t aking s uch a long time to implement a l ong term solution to this issue.”

He said short term measures to stop cars and trucks mounting the curb as they turn the corner h ave failed previously, i ncluding the installation of a number of bollards which have simply been knocked down by passing traffic.

“This issue has been going on for 12 to 18 months and continues with a permanent resolution yet to found,” he said.

It i s b elieved Ro ads a nd M aritime Services (RMS), State Rail and the Council

have h ad d iscussions a bout t he on going safety issue.

Council i s now w aiting on a rep ort t hat will c onsider a ll a spects o f c ostings f or permanent o ptions, in cluding th e e nvironmental impact of making the footpath wider and further back from the road.

In t he me antime a n a greement by Councillors h as meant t hat a l arge ‘super bollard’ has been installed.

Labor Councillor Chris Woods welcomed the move.

“The n ew b ollard w ill p rovide m uch more e ffective prote ction for p edestrians waiting on t he c orner. I n t he p ast t he weaker b ollards h ave j ust b een m own down. T rucks w ill no w b e f orced t o exercise g reater c aution on t his c orner.

“It’s good there is a sign for trucks to turn left from the right lane. I hope this will be a permanent measure to protect the school children a nd n ot s omething d esigned t o protect the workers,” Mr Dassaklis said.

For a long time, my weight was a constant battle. Trying every diet under the sun and training like a maniac for two to three hours per day, I thought I was doing the right thing until o ther a reas o f m y h ealth s tarted t o deteriorate.

I began sufferin g w ith depression and anxiety. I was determined tha t meds w ere not an option. I started researchin g and discovered tha t the food I ea t w ill ha ve a huge impact on ho w I feel men tally, physically and emotionally.

I manag ed to sta y medic ation f ree and changed m y en tire lifestyle. I di tched the supplements, threw out the sugar , banned processed food and fast food became a huge “no no”.

Within da ys I noticed a difference in myself. Within weeks, my family started to notice a change. From that point, life was no longer about eating to be “skinny”, it was about fuellin g m y body to be a healthier , fitter version of myself and weight loss was just a bonus!

Recently, I was diagnosed w ith M ultiple Sclerosis (MS). This is an auto immune disease tha t a ttacks y our cen tral ner vous system c ausing symptoms such as loss of muscle con trol, v ision, balance and sensation. But here is the important part: MS does not define me. I still maintain my health, I still train and I refuse to let the disease w in.

Be grateful. Every day, before you get up, spend a minute to lay there and go over the things y ou h ave t o b e g rateful f or. I t w ill change your day.

Biggest health / fitness misconception?

Calorie coun ting. I ha ve a diet tha t most would consider ‘high fat’ and therefore ‘high calorie’ and most days, I am eating more calories than I am burnin g! But, my sources of fat are the secret: grass fed meat, coconut oil, olive oil, coconut f lesh and avocado are just some of the foods tha t I ea t on a daily basis. W ith the remo val of sugars, whea t, grains and processed foods, calories are no longer a problem.

What do y ou consider the bigg est benefit of being fit and healthy?

For me, I love feeling strong and able to do anything! I c an lift hea vy things, I c an play with my kids for hours and I never feel sick.

We’re heading into a new season and a whole bunch of new trends, which means i t’s time to clean out the war drobe. I know, clearing out your wardrobe is one of the hardest – and sometimes most upset ting – things that a person has to g o through but w ithout the seasonal re- vamp your wardrobe may end up like mine.

I am really lazy when it comes to hanging up my clothes.

After they come out of the wash, m y clothes end up folded in a pile in my bedroom and that is where they stay, in a pile.

This pile normally consists of my every-day and favourite items – think jeans, whi te t - shirts, a cool skirt and top ensemble, a black dress and some work clothes.

Because of m y oh-so con venient pile, I rarely ev en have to look in my wardrobe, let alone rummage around in there to discover what unworn treasures may be hiding.

Over the season I migh t put a way m y clothes ev ery couple of w eeks but v ery slowly my wardrobe becomes a thick, impenetrable jungle full of items that I never wear.

To g et a jump start on the season ahead, I spen t a da y this w eek clearin g out m y war drobe, and y es, y ou read correctly, it took me a whole day. I began by hanging up my beloved pile of clothes but when I was not even half way through, I ran out of han gers and had to face m y fears; i t was time to cull.

I took out ev ery item that I ha ven’t worn for more than a y ear and when I was done, m y war drobe was almost empty. I sat down to survey the situation and began sifting through the new pile I had created.

There were the clothes that were easy to thro w a way or dona te but i t was really tough to part with those items that had special, sentimental value.

I am ashamed to sa y that I wasn ’t ready to sa y g oodbye to some of them but it felt good to donate the rest.

The sessions lasted one hou r and took place twice a week.

Comparing t he re sults b efore a nd a fter t he e xercise programme, M elov a nd h is te am f ound t hat t he o ld ad ults improved their strength significantly compared to the young adults. Before the programme the old adults were about 60 per cent weaker than the young adults. After just six months they were only 38 per cent weaker.

But a re markable result was before the exercise programme the o ld ad ults h ad m itochondrial ge netic prof iles c onsistent with ageing, but after the programme, they became more like the profiles of the young adults.

Makes lifting the grandkids around sound like a real win win situation if you ask me! I certainly won’t be giving up weights any time soon!

I just want to say how sad and shocking it was to lose TV presenter Charlotte Dawson last Saturday. I hope something good can come out of this in terms of recognising depression and the horrible power people on social media can have over one another.

Returning to Ten next week is popular drama ‘Puberty Blues’ which will air this Wednesday, March 5 at 8.30pm. It’s understood this season will push the boundaries even more as it now moves beyond the storylines in the original novel.

Excellent but surprising news for fans of sc-fi show ‘Heroes’ after it was announced last weekend that the axed show was returning in 2015 known as ‘Heroes Reborn’. The plot is currently a huge secret but it’s understood it will come back as a 13-part mini-series.

One of the best reality shows going around returned last night on 7TWO, ‘The Amazing Race’. If you missed it, this season is another one of the crazy All Stars versions but after viewing the first episode, it’s set to be a fantastic series ahead.

It’s a rewar ding drop w ith c itrus, herb and mineral flavours – but be warned there are three thin gs y ou need to bear in mind: nev er think of the cellar , small glasses or petite sips with this one.
