he pressure is set to be taken off Sydney Airport whe n f ederal C abinet g ives t he green l ight t o a n a irport a t B adgerys Creek as early as next week. In a move that will divide opinion across the city, it is expected that Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss w ill re commend appro val b e g iven t o t he project a nd a $20 0 m illion c onnecting t ransport network. It w ill b e t he mo st s ignificant dev elopment i n the issue since the mid 1980’s when Bob Hawke’s government de cided B adgerys C reek s hould house a second Sydney airport. It will also be a huge relief to residents in Marrickville a nd s urrounding s uburbs who a lready de al with s ignificant a irport noi se. T he mo ve t o g ive the g reen l ight t o B adgerys C reek me ans e xtensions of c urfews at Sydney are unlikely and pressure will be eased in coming decades. However, d espite m edia r eports a nd s trong sources suggesting an announcement is looming, Prime Minister Tony Abbott would not confirm anything in relation to a timeframe. “I do have to warn you that it’s not imminent and the timeframes that I saw being speculated on in the media this morning you should not necessarily accept,” Mr Abbott said on Wednesday. “But w e w ill m ake a de cision, b ecause t hat’s what the public expect: the public elect a government to make decisions, not to put them off.”
