he pressure is set to be taken off Sydney Airport whe n f ederal C abinet g ives t he green l ight t o a n a irport a t B adgerys Creek as early as next week.

In a move that will divide opinion across the city, it is expected that Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss w ill re commend appro val b e g iven t o t he project a nd a $20 0 m illion c onnecting t ransport network.

It w ill b e t he mo st s ignificant dev elopment i n the issue since the mid 1980’s when Bob Hawke’s government de cided B adgerys C reek s hould house a second Sydney airport.

It will also be a huge relief to residents in Marrickville a nd s urrounding s uburbs who a lready de al with s ignificant a irport noi se. T he mo ve t o g ive the g reen l ight t o B adgerys C reek me ans e xtensions of c urfews at Sydney are unlikely and pressure will be eased in coming decades.

However, d espite m edia r eports a nd s trong sources suggesting an announcement is looming, Prime Minister Tony Abbott would not confirm anything in relation to a timeframe.

“I do have to warn you that it’s not imminent and the timeframes that I saw being speculated on in the media this morning you should not necessarily accept,” Mr Abbott said on Wednesday.

“But w e w ill m ake a de cision, b ecause t hat’s what the public expect: the public elect a government to make decisions, not to put them off.”

The ABC is not Australia’s offical PR firm The year after an election has been traditionally q uite b oring p olitically – p articularly w hen there’s been a change of government.

That’s not so much the case these days with the 24 hour news cycle and social media demanding things h appen m uch q uicker a nd re fusing t o allow for settling in periods.

Tony Abbott has certainly faced some challenges s ince b eing e lected l ast S eptember a nd one of t hem seems to be dealing with being the first P rime M inister t o b e s o ac tively h ated on social media. Kevin Rudd and to a lesser extent Julia G illard w ere a lmost s ocial m edia d arlings – Rudd in particular had an affinity with Twitter that saw him appeal to a younger generation.

Mr Abbott hasn’t been so lucky and the hostility and v itriol t hat does t he rou nds on T witter a nd Facebook is not on ly difficult for Mr Abbott and his staff to deal with, but it’s an embarrassment to us as a civilised country.

The l atest rou nd of h ate c entres a round M r Abbott’s comments last week about the ABC, in which h e s aid m any p eople feel t hat t he p ublic broadcaster “instinctively takes everyone’s side but Australia’s”.

In t hat i nterview w ith 2 GB bro adcaster R ay Hadley, Mr Abbott also said: “I think it dismays Australians whe n t he n ational bro adcaster

appears to take everyone’s side but its own and I think it is a problem.”

Here’s the thing – Mr Abbott was both right and wrong in what he said. There is no doubt that the words he used were a little off – after all, the ABC is not Australia’s PR company.

It w as c lear t hat M r A bbott f eared t he s tory unfairly t arnished t he repu tation of ou r Na vy and p otentially w as i naccurate. A s i t t urns ou t, grave doubts over the ABC’s initial story seem to have been justified after further investigation.

I d on’t r eally t hink t here’s a ny d oubt t hat t he ABC gave Labor a pretty soft ride through last year’s election.

But i t i s qu ite b affling t o w atch r adio s tations like 2GB and print media organisations like News Limited s cream “ bias” a bout t he A BC whe n their respective coverage of the 2013 election was swayed so strongly against Labor that even Stevie Wonder would have seen through it.

Marrickville Council is now calling for Tenders to operate the former Jets club house and sportsgrounds at Tempe Reserve, with a view to improving the quality of the fields.

The need to increase the capacity of sportsgrounds to meet both growing demand and accommodate a variety of recreation activities was one of the main recommendations to emerge from Council’s Recreation Needs Research report.

The report recommended increasing the capacity of sportsgrounds, based on levels of use, and ability and willingness of user groups to contribute towards those upgrades.

The “ Carrington Ro ad S eparated Cycleway” is the missing link which runs from t he C ooks R iver t o M arrickville Station, through to Camperdown.

Marrickville C ouncil’s de cision me ans the cy cleway w ill b e c onstructed b y th e middle of the year.

Greens C ouncillor S ylvie E llsmore s aid her f ellow G reens C ouncillors s trongly supported the separated cycleways.

“Lanes that are established specifically for bi kes, prote ct t he s afety of c yclists and have been proven to encourage more people to cycle,” she said.

Cr D avid L eary, who repre sents t he Sydenham ar ea, s aid hi s c olleagues had re ceived m any s ubmissions f rom commuters a nd y oung f amilies w ho f elt unsafe using Carrington Road.

“They a re p articularly c oncerned a bout cyclists sharing the road with trucks, and have been calling on Council to build the separated cycleway,” he said.

“We a lso re ceived s ubmissions f rom

people r unning or w orking i n b usinesses on Carrington Road, who will now be able to cycle safely to work.”

Submissions w ere a lso re ceived f rom bike u sers ad vocacy g roup B ike M arrickville, B ike Le ichhardt, a nd Dul wich Hill Bicycle Club, among others.

Bike M arrickville P resident J ohn C aley said the cycleway would benefit less experienced cyclists as it would allow them to take a safer option.

“Less confident cyclists w ill have a s afe and more c omfortable rou te t o C ooks River f rom M arrickville a nd b eyond,” M r Caley said.

Cr Ellsmore added that over the last five years t he G reens a nd l ocal b ike a ctivists had successfully defended the Carrington separated cycleway against several rounds of threats from Councillors.

The most recent was a recission motion which w ould h ave me ant l oss of g overnment funding.

“If C ouncil h ad p assed t he re cission i t would h ave s ent t he p roject b ack t o t he drawing board and reduced the cycleway to a painted bike symbol on a busy road for years to come,” she said.

“Council w ould h ave l ost $ 150,000 i n State funding.”

It i s a nticipated t hat b y t he m iddle o f 2014, the project will have been completed and the cycleway opened.

Fire forces evacuation at IKEA Crews respond after bin blaze sparks major emergency at Tempe

hoppers a t I KEA T empe w ere evacuated just after midday on Monday afternoon following a fire that started at the rear of the large building.

Staff ma rshalled s hoppers f rom t he store, escorting them to the car park.

A w itness, who d id not w ant t o b e named, s aid a lthough n obody k new what to expect, they looked to staff for a response.

“We we re s hopping whe n we he ard alarm bells,” the witness said.

"We looked at t he staff to see what was going on. They guided us through the exit of the store.

“We a sked t hem whe re t hey w anted u s to g o, t hey s aid g o t o t he b ack o f t he c ar park b ecause it w as t he f urthest p oint o f the building and was safe.”

Angela M cCann, t he sp okesperson f or IKEA, confirmed the incident and said all co- workers and customers were evacuated from the store within three minutes.

A NS W F ire a nd Re scue sp okesperson said t he smo ke a larm f or t he I KEA s tore was triggered at 12.19pm.

Rescue c rews a rrived a nd found a l arge bin on fire in the loading dock.

Shoppers re-enter the store.

“The fire in the loading dock was extinguished by t he f ire c rews w ith t he a id of the l arge spr inkler s ystem i n t he bu ilding,” the spokesperson said.

“When t he f ire w as e xtinguished t he

crews u sed l arge f ans t o c lear t he smo ke from the loading dock.”

Police hunt armed robbers in Marrickville

Bottle thrown at ambulance; 36-year-old man charged

Police are appealing for information following an armed robbery in Marrickville on Thursday morning. About 12.30am yesterday, a 48-year-old man went to a friend’s apartment on Garners Road when he was approached by three men while at the door. When the man’s 40-year-old friend opened the door, the trio, armed with a knife, forced their way in and allegedly assaulted the two men.

They fled the scene with cash, jewellery and electronic goods. Officers attached to the Marrickville Local Area Command would like to speak to three men who may be able to assist them with their inquiries.

One is described as being of thin build, about 185 – 190cm tall and was wearing dark clothing.

A man will face court next month after he allegedly threw a bottle at an Ambulance. About 12.25pm on Thursday January 30, the vehicle was travelling along Cleveland Street, Redfern, when a man allegedly stepped into its path and threw a glass bottle.The bottle smashed the front windscreen and the vehicle was forced to stop.

Police were alerted to the incident and arrested the man a short distance away.

He was taken to Redfern Police Station and charged with malicious damage.

The 36-year-old man was granted conditional bail and will appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, February 20. No one was injured during the incident.

Sadness for police after dog dies on duty

Parents urged to ensure their homes are child friendly

Police dog ‘Mojo’ has died during a search of a building site in Alexandria.

About 9.15pm on Friday January 31, officers attached to Redfern Local Area Command were called to Wyndham Street, after reports a group of men had gained access to a building site. Specialist officers from the Dog Unit also attended the scene. Police dog Mojo and his handler began a search of the premises.

A short time later, Mojo fell and sustained extensive injuries. The dog’s handler took him to Sydney University Emergency Animal Clinic, where he died. Police continued a search of the premises, but no one was found.

The NSW Police Force is urging parents to ensure their homes are safe for children in light of the recent deaths of two toddlers in Sydney.

Commander of the North West Metropolitan Region, Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford, said it was important for parents to assess the threats posed by various appliances, fixtures, and furniture in their homes.

“I’m urging all parents to do their best to ensure their home is free of hazards that could injure their child,” he said.

“It’s important to ensure all curtain and blind cords are out of reach of children," he said.

he number of people in NSW with dementia is on the rise, with figures predicting a large increase in the disease's prevalence in the near future.

There a re a lmost 1 12,000 p eople i n t he state w ho s uffer f rom t he d isease, w ith these n umbers p redicted, t hrough t he analysis o f n ew d ementia p revalence figures f or 20 14 by D eloitte Ac cess Economics, t o i ncrease t o 132,000 by t he year 2020.

The statistics have resulted in a call for immediate a ction t o e nsure t hat t here i s both b etter c are a nd s upport s ervices for people with dementia and their families.

“The r ise i n t he number of p eople w ith dementia i s a n i ndication o f t he h uge challenge ahead,” said CEO of Alzheimer's Australia NSW, John Watkins.

“It i s e ssential t hat w e s tart b uilding better c are a nd s upport f or p eople w ith dementia and their family carers. You've arrived at your hotel and you can't wait to see all the sights. But wait, there's a few things you should do in the first 24 hours to make sure it all goes to plan.

State M ember f or M arrickville, C armel Tebbutt v isited the centre on W ednesday to inspect the upgrade.

The funds come under the 2013 Community Building Partnership Grant.

Ms T ebbutt s aid t he c entre, wh ich continues t o c ater f or c lients on a d ay t o day basis, would benefit immeasurably.

“This f unding w ill b enefit t he e xisting clients and ensure that the Centre is in a position to care for the increasing number of c lients t hat a rrive a t t heir d oor d aily,” Ms Tebbutt said.

Mr Ayres said NSW Fair Trading has received a report of a scam letter offering landlords living overseas the opportunity to claim tax exemption on rental income.

“The CEO of the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales Tim McKibbin reported receiving the scam email, which was sent to the REI helpline,” he said.

“The sc am ema il a dvises a gencies managing l andlords t o f orward f orms to t hem t o c omplete a nd re turn t o t he scammers.

“The f orms re quire det ailed p ersonal information as well as photocopies of p assports a nd m ortgage a ccount numbers. The covering letter in the scam email is badly written with numerous errors of grammar and spelling.”

Dulwich Hill r esident Fi ona B erry adopted f our- year- old f ormer r acer L uisa and s aid she h ad a g ood f eeling a bout owning greyhounds as pets.

“I always knew they were placid dogs.

When I d id the research I saw that a lot of them w ere p ut d own a fter they f inished racing. I a lso found t hat t hey m ade good pets, a nd s o t he c ombination m ade me want to adopt one,” she said.

Around 1 0,000 g reyhounds a re b red to r ace ev ery y ear. T he m any t housands that don ’t w in a re eu thanased, d umped in pounds or find their way to one of the many rescue groups now devoted to these graceful animals.

Ms B erry s aid g reyhounds were e asy to care f or do gs, a nd de spite p erceptions of them needing a l ot of e xercise because of their r acing p rowess, t hey on ly n eeded minimal exercise.

“She’s happy with 20 minutes of exercise a day. I’ll take her to the park where she’ll

run i n sm all spu rts, wh ich t akes a l ot of energy because of their pace. Then when we c ome h ome s he’ll n eed a l ie d own which she c an e asily do f or u p t o t hree hours,” she said.

Because the dogs are seen mostly as business to ols, t hey a re s ometimes s tarved of a ttention wh ich t hey s eek f rom t heir owners. T hat a ffection i s m ade p ossible when a cclimatising t o b eing h ouse p ets through the greyhound adoption centre.

They need to transition from being racing dogs to becoming pets,” she said.

I’m a personal trainer , I help r un my boyfriend’s loc al gym CrossFit HF (Holistic Foundations).

Previous to becoming a PT I’ve experienced eating disorders, and had an obsession w ith the sc ales and ho w I felt about my body. I w ent f rom a health y w eight of 58k gs ( thinking I was “ fat”) to a lo west w eight of 4 6kgs, v ery unhealth y and unhappy ( take home messag e, thro w a way y our sc ales). I knew I needed help and I needed chan ge. I did coun tless amounts of research and have experimented with myself, I tried different ways of eating, mediation and training. I found peace in my heart, I dedicated myself, battled my demons, fought my challenges and that’s got me t o where I am toda y.

I’m competin g in m y first ph ysic competi tion in April, and I’m living my passion from training clients to teaching people how to live healthy and become better versions of themselves through my 30 day hard’n’up transformations.

What do you consider the bigg est benefit of being fit and healthy?

Being confident in y our own skin f rom the inside out ref lects in y our home, in y our career and in y our relationships. Training in the g ym gi ves me stren gth in all aspec ts of day to day life.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most?

Heavy squa ts, nothin g lik e liftin g tha t weight off your shoulders.

How do y ou sta y moti vated when i t’s so easy to just ‘tak e it easy’?

Goes back to priori ties for me, I set myself a goal, I make sure it’s what I REALL Y want from training, and I get to work.

Three top tips for good health 1. Mentally know what you want – in work, in life, in the gym.

Think about how you’re going to get there, make it a priority, seek information and education and then have an action plan, all of your choices must match up with your priorities.

2. Recognise emotions and know the difference between the highs and the lows, the good and the bad, and know that you can’t experience one without the other.

3. Physically sweat a little every now and then, moving our bodies and inc reasing our heart ra tes not only releases our “feel good” endorphins but w ith ea ting w ell also aids us in looking the way we want to look.

Anything else you want to say?

You CAN be an yone you want to be if y ou just change the way you think and do , nothing is too hard or not achievable. I help people daily find change with my 30 day hard’n’up program, I once too walked in your shoes, we all have a story and it’s NEVER too late to be a BETTER you, trust me!

The World Health Organisation has released i ts latest World Cancer Report. It’s estimated there are 14 million new c ases of cancer each y ear, but tha t is e xpected to rise to 22 million within the next two decades.

More than 300 A ustralians are diagnosed with cancer every DAY. It accounts for about 7.67 per cent of all deaths internationally.

How Bobby cheated death to return to the stage obby Rydell first stepped onto the stag e when he was just eigh -t years - old, and now six decades later is still as enthusiastic as ev er, after a br ush w ith dea th spark ed a renew ed passion for life.

The 71 - year- old has enjo yed a distinguished histor y in the limeligh t, sellin g millions of records, starring in the classic movie ‘By e By e Bir die’ and pla ying to sold-out stadiums in Las Vegas.

When he became seriously ill a few years ago, his performin g c areer was under threat but luckily for R ydell, a double transplant in 2012 saved his life and transformed his attitude.

“I had a new li ver and a new kidney put inside me and I’ve been given a new lease on l ife t o b e a ble t o p erform a gain, pr ior to the operation I was very, very sick and I didn’t know if I would be able to perform again but g od has blessed me through these y ears and since the opera tion I’ ve been feeling wonderful,” he said.

Rydell’s experience also triggered him to become an advocate for organ donation.

“I’m a big promoter of or gan donorship, my donor was a y oung girl who li ved not too far f rom where I li ve, Philadelphia, she was only 21-years-old. Her name was Julia and unfortuna tely she was hi t b y a car and not only did she sa ve my life but

she saved seven other people as w ell.

And I promote tha t when I’ m up on stage, ho w importan t i t is to become an organ donor,” Rydell said.

The iconic en tertainer is c urrently in Australia on tour, enjoying his 20th visit down under.

“I just lo ve the coun try so much, that’s wh y I alwa ys wan t to g o back every couple of y ears or so and tour in A ustralia. The people are wonderful, the clima te is grea t, the food is w onderful and m y fan base is phenomenal,” Rydell said.

He will be playing at various venues in a show that will feature all his hits and some comedy.

While Rydell has always been popular in this country, it took him a while to realise that his Australian fans had different song preferences to his Americ an fa ns, which led him to tailor his concerts to local tastes and requests.

“After the sho w, signin g autogr aphs, taking pic tures, they [ fans] w ould sa y ‘Bobby, this sho w was w onderful but what happened to ‘ Swingin’ School’ and ‘The Cha- Cha- Cha?’, and I really didn ’t realise that those records were big hits for me in Australia. So the last few y ears, I’ve had my arranger write up those particular songs,” he said.

Rydell was one of Americ a’s original child stars, gi ving his first performances when he was just eigh t, follo wed by his public debut as a teen idol.

“If I had any talent whatsoever, my dad was the first one to see it when I was eight or nine-years-old, and he used to tak e me around t o di fferent c lubs i n Ph iladelphia and asked the club owner if I could get up on stage and sing some songs and do some impersonations, some comedy… I guess that’s where it all stemmed from,” he said.

“We had so many nightclubs in Philadelphia and my dad used to tak e me around on the weekends, but after tha t was over, yeah that was fun, that was wonderful but I wanted to be w ith the guys and the girls from the neighbourhood… so I didn’t miss out really too much of growing up.”

Channel Seven axed ‘Today Tonight’ on Monday after 19 years on the air. Seven will now switch to a one-hour news bulletin in line with Nine and Ten. What will you miss most from ‘Today Tonight’?

Whatever it is, the show was an institution on our screens but times have changed.

The coaches for ‘The Voice Kids’ were announced last week. The coaches are Delta Goodrem, who we’ve seen on the adult ‘Voice’; Joel Madden, who we’ve also seen on the adult ‘Voice’; Joel’s brother Benji who we’ve also seen time and time again; and of course, Mel B, who has managed to get onto ANOTHER reality show.

One of the hottest things to hit television this year will be the INXS miniseries ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ and the good news for viewers is, it’s airing this Sunday, February 9 on Channel Seven. The highly-anticipated series will air at 8.30pm and continue the following Sunday, February 16.

Channel Nine also have a big telemovie up their sleeve which they’ll unveil on Monday, February 10 at 8.30pm. ‘Schapelle’ centres around infamous Australian beautician Schapelle Corby and her drug arrest and sentencing back in 2004-2005.

R

ugby league and AFL, tw o of the country’s biggest football codes, are helping children in the Marrickville area doing it tough to overcome social barriers to achieve their lifetime ambitions.

Marrickville Council’s pilot program Dream, Believe, A chieve is tar geting loc al disadvantaged youth to help impro ve their health and overcome issues of tr uancy and unemplo yment. The ini tiative is a join t project between Council, the ‘Souths Cares’ program run by the Rabbi tohs, Cen tral S ydney GP Netw ork (CSGPN), WEAVE Youth and F amily S ervices, and the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants.

Other partners include the P CYC, B arnados and Marrickville Youth Resource Centre.

Mayor Jo Haylen said many kids in the South Marrickville area were doing it tough and were engaging in “at-risk� behaviours.

She said many had poor school attendance and unhealthy lifestyles.

Through the Dream, B elieve, A chieve program, that could change.

“It’s fan tastic tha t the Rabbi tohs and the Giants have now come on board and are taking part in our breakfast club to help us tackle these entrenched issues,� Mayor Haylen said.

The Mayor said she was a Rabbi tohs fan and having former Rabbi tohs star Rh ys W esser work with the South Marrickville children was a treat. “I really hope they are inspired, train har d, and experience the benefits of team w ork and commitment,� she said.

Funding of $13, 640 has been dona ted b y the CSGPN , w ith other fundin g pro vided b y Council and the various partners. The program commenced on Tuesda y and w ill r un ev ery Tuesday and Thursday morning during school term w ith trainin g sessions hel d b y three under-20s Rabbitohs players.

Nutrition is also part of program.

Both S outh S ydney pla yers and Grea ter Western S ydney pla yers w ill encourag e the participants to not only tak e part in sportin g activities, but also assist them in pursuing local social support services.

The pilot program w ill conclude a t the end of March, w ith a ‘Marrickv ille S ouths’ team competing in a fitness challenge hosted by the GWS Giants.
