T

here is hope the li ve music scene in the Marrickville area may be resurrected.

Marrickville Council is consulting with local live music venue owners to develop strategies and polic ies to support li ve music and entertainment.

Early in 2013, Counc il unanimously agreed t o recognise and assist the live music industry. Since then, i t has been e xploring wa ys to support the growth and diversity of live music venues as well as small bars and restaurants.

Mayor J o Ha ylen said Counc il’s aim was to sustain the li ve music v enues in Marrickv ille as she believed they were the best in Sydney.

As a member of the Ci ty of S ydney Live Music Taskforce, Mayor Haylen said she was determined to find a solution to o vercome the obstacles the music industry is facing.

“The work of the Taskforce will help us develop consistent live music f riendly policies across the inner city and inner west. We’re also working with Leichhardt Council to establish a live music and cultural prec inct on Parrama tta R oad betw een

Lessons of the past can help overcome a modern day problem When you choose not to get behind the wheel of a car after y ou’ve been drinkin g, what’s the real reason?

Is it that you legitimately realise your reactions and abili ty coul d be so sev erely impac ted tha t you coul d kill somebody , or is i t tha t y ou fear getting caught?

I’d argue it’s the latter.

The consequences of drink driving are well known – poten tial loss of licence, big fines and even the threat of jail time.

Then there ’s the poten tial job loss and the impact on your family.

The truth is we don’t get behind the wheel when we’re dr unk bec ause w e fear the red and blue lights in our rear v ision mirror and the poten tial losses that follow a moment of stupidity.

Yes, there ’s still idiots out there who dri ve while dr unk but adv ertising c ampaigns and programs implemen ted by governments and police have successfully instilled in us a fear of getting caught.

Often y ou’ll hear people talk about the “ old days” when people g ot behind the wheel dr unk as a skunk because there was no Random Breath Testing (RBT).

So, why was RBT introduced in the first place?

Quite simply , in the early 1980 ’s the F ederal Government r ealised t hat r oad a ccidents w ere costing the Commonwealth Budget $100 million

a year and that at least one third of adults killed in road acc idents had signific ant blood- alcohol levels.

Controversial as it was at the time, RBT has been an enormous success. And it wasn’t because people sud denly dev eloped a fear of killin g someone; it was because people developed a fear of what would happen if they were busted.

As we consider now the very real problem of alcohol-fuelled violence and unprovoked attacks in Sydney, we can look back at the introduction of RBT to learn some lessons f rom the past to help us guide the future.

With the in troduction of RBT , w e tackled the core problem head on: the dri ver. We didn’t try to get pubs and clubs to lock c ars in car parks, or to close earlier . We didn’t tr y to restric t sales of alcohol, or sc an dri vers’ licences when people bought a case of beer.

Ever since the dea th of Thomas K elly in Kin gs Cross in 2012, the issue of alcohol- fuelled violence and unprovoked assaults has been a hot one. They will keep happening, too.

Just like when RBT was introduced, you can’t turn around and blame the pub or club bec ause of an individual’s actions.

What w e need is a legi timate deterren t th at makes people think tw ice before they a ttack somebody. It’s up to the la wmakers and the courts to step up to the plate.

Police deal with summer of violence in Marrickville

n Tuesda y a t about 7 .15pm emergency ser vices w ere called to a block of uni ts in George Street, Marrickv ille due to reports of a stabbing.

Upon arri val officers loc ated a man with a stab w ound to his chest. The 53- year- old was tak en to R oyal P rince

Alfred Hospital for treatment.

Officers f rom Marrickv ille L ocal Area Command a ttended and w ere tol d the man was stabbed follo wing an ar gument with another man inside the unit.

A 47 -year- old man was found a short time l ater o n G eorge S treet s uffering head injuries. H e was tak en to hospi tal for treatment.

Following inquiries in to the inc ident, the younger man was arrested and charged with malicious wounding.

Meanwhile, another stabbin g incident in Marrickv ille has been resolv ed

by police officers. About 5.

30pm on Wednesday, D ecember 18 , emer gency services w ere c alled to a uni t on Livingstone R oad follo wing reports of a stabbing.

Officers arri ved and found a 50- yearold man sufferin g stab w ounds to the chest and head.

He was tak en to R oyal P rince Alf red Hospital for treatment to his injuries, which included a punctured lung.

A 27 - year- old man has since been arrested and char ged w ith w ounding the man with intent to harm him.

Do you have a secret bank account?

C

onsumer research into the financial behaviour of Australians has found tha t an equi valent of 300,000 married and de fac to couples admi t to ha ving sec ret bank accounts w ithout the kno wledge of their partner.

The research conduc ted b y T AL Life Insurance found that while 66 per cen t of couples have joint bank accoun ts, a lar ge percentage also have their own independent finances too, with many having secret stashes stowed away.

A total of 45 per cent of married/de facto people have a bank account to which their partner has no access (36 per cent married but 71 per cen t of de fac to couples ) and three per cen t ha ve accoun ts tha t their partners are not even aware of.

While the average amount held in these secret accoun ts is $30 ,000 – $37 ,700 for males and $22, 300 for females – 11 per cent of people ha ve more than $100 ,000,

13 per cen t of accoun ts con tain betw een $50,000 and $99,999, one in four secret accounts ha ve $50 ,000, and for 39 per cent the amount is less than $5,000.

TAL Group CEO Jim Min to said he was surprised so man y people had sec ret accounts, w ith one out of fi ve people saying they main tained these co vert accounts as a safety-net in case something happened.

“While w e ma y not kno w the prec ise motivation behind all these secret bank accounts, such accounts are no substitute for p roper f inancial p rotection i n t he event one’s income sud denly stopped for good or for an e xtended period as a result of illness,” Mr Minto said.

“We kno w tha t people ha ve their o wn financial g oals, or tha t their a ttitudes to money migh t not alwa ys be compa tible with their partner, so there can be some very good reasons for keeping money and life insurance protection separate.”

But Mr Minto believes a shared approach to finance is best: “But for life insuranc e planning a shared approach can make a lot of sense when there are joint debts such as mortgages and other shared responsibilities such as children. Ensuring the family has the righ t amoun t of co ver is v ery important.”

Minister for Fair Trading Stuart Ayres has warned everyone with the New Year’s resolution of joining a gym to read the fine print.

“Those facing the battle of the bulge should be encouraged but there are pressures beyond the barbells,” Mr Ayres said.

Last year Fair Trading received 431 complaints in relation to health clubs and gyms, a similar figure to 2012.

“Cancellations and cooling off periods were the most common complaint, with about 170 received during both years,” he said.

“Don’t be muscled in to signing up on the spot rather than shopping around.

Not faring so well: prices go up despite thousands of complaints

he start to 2014 has become a sore poin t for public transport commuters in the Inner W est who w ill pa y as much as one dollar a week extra for train travel.

Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt said the fare increase was a slap in the face for commuters who have to wear the cost increase ev en after complainin g tha t the trains don’t run on time.

Under the fare inc reases, the cost of an adult w eekly train tick et w ill rise b y another $1 per w eek and M yMulti tickets will rise a further $2 per week.

Bus and ferry passengers have also been slugged with higher fares for every trip.

War stories to be shared in centenary event

F

or those who ha ve nev er been to A ddison R oad Communi ty Centre in Marrickv ille, when you enter at the front gates, you observe somethin g unique about the buildings. They all have the same design.

The reason? The centre was a former Army barrac ks, a processin g cen tre for soldiers and a school for trainin g officers and horses that was established in 1914.

On F ebruary 26 , A ddison R oad w ill be celebrating 100 y ears and they are look ing to hear f rom an yone who has been involved w ith the cen tre to form part of the Talking History Project.

Addison Road general manager Rosanna Barbero said the projec t in volves the recording of people who c ame through Addison Road ei ther before or after they went to war and to share their stories, memories and experiences.

“In February we will be hosting a morning tea for people to come share and listen to stories about our history,” she said.

Ms Barbero said that since contacting the Department of Veterans Affairs about the project, they’ve been inundated with calls and letters.

“Since we put the call out through Veterans Affairs, w e’ve had hundreds of c alls

Celebrating 100 years. from all over Australia. People wanting to share their stories, and people who had family members who c ame to A ddison Road to be processed for military service.”

But the ad ditional signific ance of the centre is tha t people who returned f rom war also c ame to A ddison R oad to be processed as civilians.

But i t’s not just people f rom a mili tary background that are encourag ed to come to the morning tea, those who came to the centre in 1976 as part of the first ethnic group are also more than welcome.

About 1.30pm on Wednesday, January 1, 2014, four males unlawfully entered the Inner West Light Rail Lewisham Substation in Alfred Street, Lewisham. This area is currently a construction site.

The four males were seen carrying an unknown amount of black and orange copper wiring within the location.

When approached by a security guard the four males became aggressive and threatened to assault him.

As the security guard contacted Police on his phone, he saw the four males jump over a fence with the stolen wire. They were last seen walking along Long Port Street, Lewisham.

The four males are described as being of a Middle Eastern appearance.

Between 11pm on Sunday, January 5 and 1.37am on Monday, January 6, unknown person(s) broke into a house on Terrace Road, Dulwich Hill. The residents were sleeping during this time.

The offender(s) stole a number of items, including two sets of car keys and stole both cars parked out the front.

About 1.37am on Monday, January 6, one of the stolen cars – a Black Honda Civic – was involved in a collision with a table top truck on Moyes Street, Dulwich Hill. The driver fled the scene prior to police arriving. About midday, witnesses saw a male park the second stolen car – a 2000 Gold Nissan Maxima sedan – on Edward Street in Marrickville. The offender left the scene shortly after. Police are investigating.

Man shot in foot after being robbed at Hay Street unit

About 8.30am on Sunday, January 5, a 74-year-old woman was walking home from Church along Myrtle Street in Stanmore.

As she approached Myrtle Lane, the woman was confronted by a male who asked her if she had the time. When the woman looked down at her watch the male grabbed her clutch and pulled it from her hands. The male then ran away in a northerly direction along Myrtle Lane.

The male is described as 35 to 40-yearsold, 6ft tall, slim/fit build, olive skin, clean shaven, wearing a grey long sleeve shirt.

Anyone with information should contact Marrickville police on 9568 9299.

About 10.30am on Tuesday, December 31, a 56-year-old man attended Petersham Police Station and informed officers he had been shot in the foot.

After medical treatment the man was taken to Marrickville Police Station, where he was assisting detectives with their inquiries.

Officers have been told the 56-year-old man had attended a unit on Hay Street in Leichhardt, where it’s alleged two men robbed him and shot him in the foot. Police attended the unit and three people foudnd there are assisting police.

A fourth man, believed to have a firearm is still being searched for.

In a n i ncident t hat l asted on ly a m atter of seconds, Mr Christie hit the pavement, fracturing h is sk ull a nd f ell u nconscious – a mome nt t hat u ndoubtedly c hanged the l ives of t he v ictim a nd M r C hristie’s alleged attacker, Shaun McNeill, forever.

With more a nd more rep orts of a lleged single- punch as saults s urfacing in th e media, p ressure i s i ncreasing f or N SW Premier, Barry O’Farrell, t o try the so- called “ Newcastle s olution” i n K ings Cross.

The s cheme, i mplemented i n M arch 2008 a t a t ime whe n New castle h ad t he highest rate of alcohol-fuelled violence in NSW, includes a 1am lockout at 14 venues across the city’s CBD entertainment precinct, no shot s a fter 1 0pm a nd t he closure of venues at 3am.

Although the changes were initially met with resistance by n ightlife lovers, nearly six y ears on i t’s h ard t o a rgue w ith t he outcome of the strategy.

Recent ac ademic a nalysis s uggests t hat reducing t rading hou rs f rom 5 am to 3 am results in a 33 per cent reduction in alcohol related assaults and a 26 per cent decrease in related hospital emergency department admissions.

In New castle sp ecifically, t here w ere nearly 20 0 f ewer a ssaults i n t he f irst 18 months after the scheme launched.

There i s no doubt t hat t he New castle solution h as i mproved s afety i n t he Newcastle C BD a t n ight, b ut i t m ust b e noted the city is by no m eans trouble free and v enues op erating u nder t he s cheme have regularly appeared on t he list of the state’s most violent venues since 2009.

Moving between venues on a n ight out, young me n w ill of ten e xchange l oaded remarks, looking to start a fight, and blanket closing times mean that come 3am, as venues shut their doors a nd well-oiled revelers spi ll ou t on to t he s treets, t axi ranks c an b ecome a n obv ious bre eding ground for tension a s g roups, keen to get home after a long night on the grog, argue over who is entitled to the next cab.

The 2 4-hour McDonald’s i n K ing Street, opposite t he p opular K ing S treet H otel nightspot, h as g one s o f ar a s t o h ire i ts own s ecurity t eam on w eekends t o h elp control of ten a ggressive c ustomers w ith assistance f rom l ocal p olice a nd a ssaults are common at the restaurant.

occurring a round li censed v enues a fter dark and these results could be emulated in t he c apital i f Sy dney w as t o adopt a similar strategy.

However, if the State Government’s aim is t o pu t a n end t o “ coward pu nches” and ch ange th e curr ent drink ing culture among young people – where unprovoked attacks a re in creasingly b ecoming p art of a n a verage n ight on t he t own – t he Newcastle s olution s hould on ly p art o f a wider, ideally statewide strategy.

A strategy where young men are re- educated on t he nor ms a nd e xpectations of masculinity and the consequences of their actions whilst under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

The State Government has taken positive steps in supporting a move away from the term “ king h it” i n f avour of t he f ar more appropriate “coward punch” but a change in vernacular is merely the beginning.

It’s time for policy makers to make tough decisions and get to the bottom of this country’s troubled drinking culture before more innocent lives are lost to violent acts of cowardice and stupidity.

Lifetime of working could be extended to reduce economic pressures

T

he P roductivity Commission has found tha t inc reasing the retirement age from 65 to 70 is a possible policy action to ad dress the demands of an ageing population, but seniors aren’t entirely sold on the idea of working longer.

An Ageing Australia: Preparing for the Future, has found that Australia is facing a major productivity slowdown at the same time that ageing will start to make major demands on t he budgets of a ll Australian governments.

The population aged 75 years or m ore is projected to rise by four million from 2012 to 2060 and in 2012, there was roughly one centenarian for every 100 babies; by 2060, it i s e stimated t hat t here w ill b e 2 5 s uch centenarians.

Peter H arris, C hairman of t he C ommission, said the best time to develop policies that address t he inescapable implications of ageing is while the issue is in its infancy.

Seniors don't want the retirement age lifted.

“It is a good time to start a debate and to float creative policy options,” he said.

The rep ort s ays t he de sign of t he a ge pension and the broader ret irement system d iscourages a n a ctive ec onomic role b y olde r p eople, not withstanding

their far longer life expectancy.

“It might appear that a person born in 2012 could expect to live for 19 more years after t hey reach 65 y ears old. I n fact, it is projected t hat t hey w ill l ive f or a round 29 years a fter t hat a ge. T his r aises i ssues

about opt imal ret irement a ges, pro vision for p ublicly f unded p ensions a nd r ules about access to superannuation savings,” claims the report.

But Na tional S eniors, t he c onsumer lobby f or o lder Au stralians, h as h it b ack at P roductivity C ommission s uggestions that t he p ension a ge b e r aised t o 7 0 t o combat rising economic pressures.

National S eniors C hief E xecutive, Michael O’Neill warned against raising the age pension age without first tackling the issue of unemployment.

“It is naive to suggest that simply raising the p ension a ge w ill b oost pro ductivity,” he said.

“Currently, o lder Au stralians w ant t o work bu t no one w ill h ire t hem. R aising the pension age without providing jobs will s ee o lder Au stralians me rely sh ifted from one form of welfare to another.”

In 2012, t he over 55s represented a f ifth of t hose ou t of w ork f or t wo y ears a nd living off Newstart Allowance. More than half o f t hose on t he D isability S upport Pension – which is not activity tested – are aged over 50.

“Population a geing i s a re ality a nd seniors w elcome t he de bate bu t t he Productivity Commission is going over old ground,” he said.

hanks to a last minute burst of generosity, a recor d 470 ,000 gifts were donated over Christmas through the Kmart W ishing Tree Appeal to help those in need.

The annual appeal collects presents for people of a ll a ges, t o b e d istributed t o families through the Salvation Army.

With ju st 20 7,982 g ifts don ated by December 18, t here w as a m assive l ast minute effort to see that number doubled to 470,658 by Christmas.

A 1 0 p er c ent i ncrease i n G ST c harges was prop osed by t he A TO bu t a fter feedback from the community, the draft ruling has been withdrawn.

“Over t he p ast s even w eeks, w e h ave been considering a range of submissions from t he c ommunity a nd s takeholders as part of our consultation process,” said Tax Commissioner, Chris Jordan.

“We h ave c arefully c onsidered t he legal arguments and practical implications and decided that we don’t need to change th e e xisting G ST tr eatment o f these estates.”

Mobile h omes w ill c ontinue t o b e treated as c ommercial r esidential premises, w ith t he s ame GST r ules t hat apply to long-term ac commodation a nd caravan parks.

“With the benefit of submissions, it is ev ident t hat wh ile mo veable home estates h ave ch anged, they a re s till similar enough to caravan parks to receive t he c oncessional t reatment. I n particular, b oth in volve l etting o f s ites separately to the building,” he said.

Addictions are most often used in negative contexts, like an addiction to drugs or alcohol, but for me, addiction is the best definition I can find that describes my relationship to shopping, specifically swimwear shopping.

Monday was my f irst day back at work a nd when my alarm went off, I immediately picked up my phone and read my emails – and learnt that one of my favourite online stores was having a 20 per cent off sale.

I i mmediately j umped o n t he w ebsite, d espite having purchased a one-piece swimsuit the night before and began to browse.

Before I knew it, I was running late and had sent my credit card details off in return for two new tops (it was a great deal!).

I got to work just in the n ick of t ime and whe n I op ened u p m y I nternet browser and accidentally typed in the web address for another Internet store, I knew I had a problem.

When I a m not I nternet shoppi ng, I a m t hinking about heading down to the local shops or pl anning what I w ill d o w hen I w ill p ick u p m y parcels in the mail.

Is it harmful? No (unless I c hoose the w rong p air of sho es f or a d aylong trawl in the local Westfield), but it does cause significant harm to my bank account.

Am I enslaved? Well, I do f eel like I can’t escape the sales...

So how many resolutions have been kept so far? How’s t he exercise every day one going? You say you “don’t have time to exercise”.

This i s p robably t he m ost c ommon re ason p eople g ive f or not exercising; they say they just don’t have the time. Well let me put it to you this way: exercise is every bit as important as eating, sleeping and breathing!

It s hould n ot b e v iewed a s a n a ncillary p art o f y our d ay, but rather a ne cessity. You probably don’t go a w eek w ithout eating, and you should not go a week without exercise either.

In fact, you typically shouldn't go more than a couple of days at most without it.

The trick to making time for exercise is to view it as a nonnegotiable p art o f y our d ay. I deally, s chedule i t i nto y our appointment book the way you would an important meeting or social event. Set the time for it and then make no e xcuses about keeping your exercise appointment.

What y ou’ll f ind i s t hat t he more y ou e xercise, t he b etter you’ll feel and the more addictive it will become.

Soon you won’t want to miss your exercise sessions because you’ll notice a dip in your energy or stamina when you back off for too long.

You need to place a HIGH PRIORITY on it and schedule your day around the exercise, not t he other way around that most people do. T his w ay i t w ill get done a nd you w ill s erve a s a powerful example to those who you love.

When it comes to exercise, there’s no t ime like the present.

Don’t wait another day to get your program started.

And please don’t use your age as an excuse either, because no matter what your age, exercise can provide enormous benefits for your health.

If you happen to be over 40, it’s especially important to either start or step up your exercise program. This is the time of life when your physical strength, stamina, balance and flexibility can start to decline, and exercise can help to counteract that decline dramatically.

major new c abaret and theatre concept is about to hit Sydney, with ‘The James Ramble Show’ to premiere on J anuary 31 a t the Slide Lounge in Darlinghurst.

The sho w is a rev ised v ersion of the hit ‘M uftee Sho w’, which pla yed for tw o years a t the Stables Thea tre and in New York betw een 200 3 and 2005. The sho w now returns with a new name and hosts.

10 y ears ag o, ‘ The M uftee Sho w’ was the hit talking point among theatre and cabaret circles. Hosted by Hayden Tee, the show was a tonight show style pastiche, featuring guests bein g in terviewed, singing their songs and entering into the spontaneous fun and games of a grea t theatrical evening.

During the course of the two years when the sho w pla yed as a la te sho w a t the Stables Theatre every Friday and Saturday night, ev ery major thea tre and c abaret star bec ame guest stars on the sho w and in 2004 the show moved to New York very briefly with guests tha t included Stephen Schwartz, J ohn Bucchino , J ohn T artaglia and Julie Wilson.

Seven goes for a magic moment I’m going to start off the year blasting the ABC for their horrendous coverage of the Sydney New Year’s Eve Fireworks. To my knowledge it was the first time the public broadcaster aired the event and it very well should be their last. The coverage was an absolute disaster from start to finish. It was tasteless, humourless, boring and longwinded.

Readers of this column know how much I enjoy my magic shows, and luckily for me there are plenty more in sight. Channel Seven recently announced two new British magic shows ‘The Happenings’ and ‘Tricked’ as well as a new season of ‘Dynamo: Magician Impossible’.

I cannot wait!

Sad news came through last week with the death of James Avery, best known for his roles in the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ and as Shredder in ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’. The 68-year-old who played Uncle Phil died following complications after heart surgery. RIP.

Former Channel Ten newsman Hamish MacDonald has landed a pretty sweet gig as International Affairs Correspondent with ABC America.

MacDonald is a huge talent and will be based in London covering all the goings-on in the UK and abroad.

The Golden Globes are back for another year and will screen live on FOX8 this Monday, January 13 at 12pm. Comedic superstars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return as hosts for the event. If you can’t catch the live broadcast, FOX8 will replay all the glamour and action at 8.30pm.

Channel Seven has announced comedydrama ‘Winners and Losers’ will be back for another season. Seven’s Head of Drama, Julie McGauran said: “Winners and Losers is a show everyone loves working on. There’s so much in store for our favourite girls!”

ore and more youngsters are taking up the ba t and red ball a t Marrickville Cricket Club according to club president Scott Kennedy.

“We’ve seen a grea t impro vement in our established juniors, which has helped the many new players enjoying their first season of club cricket,” Mr Kennedy said.

“Historically, pla yer numbers ha ve usually grown when the national side goes well, but the surge this season happened soon after Australia lost the Ashes in England.”

The club has four junior teams who are leading their respec tive competitions midway through the season.

The club has 12 junior teams in five age groups in the Canterbury and Western Suburbs Cricket Association, includin g competi tion leaders in all three under 12 divisions and the first and
