arla Stacey and Laurel Horton were named Marrickville’s Citizen of the Year and Senior Citizen of the Year respectively at this week’s Australia Day ceremony in Enmore Park.

Ms Stacey is a communications professional who has worked hard to change perceptions of Marrickville High School and who has been involved in a range of community activities including coordinating girls cricket, encouraging children to learn more about technology through the Code Rangers program, founding the Wilkins Facebook community, and raising more than $7000 for a school in Cambodia for children who have escaped human trafficking.

“People like Carla make Marrickville a better place to live,” Mayor Mark Gardiner said.

“She’s an active community leader who has made a significant positive impact on our community.”

Meanwhile, Senior Citizen of the Year Laurel Horton is responsible for the St Peters Cooks River History Group, writing three books on the history of the area and numerous articles for the Marrickville Heritage Society.

She also leads the St Peters Church Seniors Group, organising bus outings and lunches, and driving people to and from medical appointments.

“Laurel is a truly inspiring member of our community,” Mayor Gardiner said.

When you wake up on Australia Day, you expect to hear stories about the Australians of the Year and recipients of honours. That was true this year but the big news that the Prime Minister was giving Prince Phillip a knighthood was completely unexpected.

Even more astonishing was seeing his party and his friends in the media drop him like a bag of potatoes. The word is he consulted with no-one about the decision and no-one duly supported it.

Prime Minister Abbott is now well down the same road Kevin Rudd travelled before being removed from the leadership in 2010.

It is hard to believe that a party would consider removing a prime minister within a term of taking that party to power but that is what happened with Mr Rudd. And it happened because he ignored the majority of his colleagues, taking a “my way or the highway” approach to dissent so that when push came to shove he had very few friends left supporting him.

Of course that coup subsequently tainted Julia Gillard’s leadership and contributed to her demise three years later when the party went back to Mr Rudd as leader.

The malcontents in the Government will be conscious of that, as they will be of the result in last year’s Victorian state election where the conservative Government was dismissed after just one term, a term that included replacing the elected premier Ted Baillieu in his first term as well.

They will do their utmost not to get rid of Mr Abbott and risk being the first single term government since the Scullin Labor Government of 1929-31. But if the polls don’t improve by the end of the year and the Prime Minister is unable to change his ways, there is a real chance of history repeating.

The other big story we woke up to on Australia Day was the news of the Greek election. The voters abandoned both the conservative New Democracy party of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and the moderate progressive Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in favour of SYRIZA, the coalition of the radical left and its leader Alexis Tsiparis.

They formed an alliance with the far right Independent Greeks (ANEL) where the only common ground seems to be a dislike of the austerity measures forced on Greece in 2010 as the country’s debt got out of control.

There is a real chance of history repeating

The austerity measures have crippled the Greek economy leading to high unemployment and underemployment and widespread discontent.

New Prime Minister Tsiparis hasn’t signalled exactly what action he will take regarding the austerity measures yet but they will certainly be wound back somewhat.

There is a lesson for the Australian government in this. Treasurer Joe Hockey’s first budget last year was very much an austerity one with substantial cuts flagged for health, education and other area of government. They are by no means comparable to the cuts in Greece and won’t have the same effect on the economy but the polls indicate they are unpopular with the people and if the Government continues to maintain that cutting debt is its number one priority, it may experience a similar result to the one in Greece.

The third item of news I heard on Australia Day was of the death of Labor stalwart Tom Uren.

Growing up in the Depression and spending four years as a prisoner of war in World War II, Mr Uren had known real hardship, something few in the current parliament are familiar with.

Over 32 years in the Parliament, that experience underpinned his approach to every issue. How will it affect the under privileged and how can we remove injustice?

Listening to local member Anthony Albanese talk about his good friend Tom Uren at the Australia Day ceremony in Enmore Park was profoundly moving and an insight into the nature of both men.

On a lighter note, there was a fourth item of democracy news on Australia Day and that was the announcement of the annual Hottest 100 poll, which Triple J describes as the world’s biggest musical democracy, and the question of whether Taylor Swift would be included after a campaign run by online media company BuzzFeed.

Triple J chose to exclude Swift because the campaign had distorted the voting (which incidentally would have seen the song ‘Shake It Off’ finish 12th if it hadn’t been excluded).

Was it undemocratic to ban the song? Not if you consider that its voting base was coming from outside the audience of the station.

When all’s said and done, Australia Day this year probably prompted far more discussions on the nature of democracy around barbecues and kitchen tables than it ever has before.

I can’t wait for next year!

esidents of Campbell Street and Campbell Road in St Peters began receiving letters last Friday advising whether their properties would be resumed or not as part of the WestConnex motorway.

Pauline Lockie, one of the affected residents, said she was angry about potentially losing their home and felt they had been lied to by the government.

“They lied to us in July 2014 when they said they had no plans for the house before we bought it during our due diligence, then again in November when they said no decision would be made until late 2015,” Ms Lockie said.

“When we asked how this could possibly be happening when there were no approved plans, EIS, chosen vendor etc, we were told that all three shortlisted consortia indicated they’d be following the WDA’s predetermined route, so they’re charging ahead with acquisitions.”

WestConnex Delivery Authority chief executive Dennis Cliche said they had confirmed the acquisition of 41 residential properties within the existing road reservation.

“Our decision to acquire the former Alexandria Landfill site has meant that, thus far, we’ve been able to limit the residential property requirement to those in the existing road widening reservations which have been in place for some decades,” Mr Cliche said.

“We have moved ahead with advising owners of intended property acquisition where we can definitely confirm a property is needed for the project. This is to provide the earliest certainty possible.”

Mr Cliche acknowledged there were some properties where it’s unsure if they’re needed for acquisition or not but all owners would be advised of any potential impacts in due course.

The WestConnex Action Group said the letters were potentially illegal as the group had received legal advice suggesting that failure to comply with the prescribed Environmental Impact Statement could render the process ineffective.

Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay said the group would have more credibility if “it acknowledged some home truths such as every residential property being acquired has long sat within a reservation earmarked for road expansion”.

Newsagencies set to lose big if new laws go ahead he sale of lottery tickets through newsagents is set to become an election issue with the Government looking to widen the number of channels through which lottery tickets can be bought and the Opposition promising to protect local newsagents.

Labor Candidate for Newtown Penny Sharpe said there were around 1500 newsagents and other small businesses across the state, including over 30 located in Newtown, which will face financial hardship and possible closure when the current Agency Protection Period expires in April.

“Income from lotteries is around 40 per cent of turnover in a local newsagency and can reach as high as 90 per cent – any loss of that business would cripple our local newsagents and the local economy,” Ms Sharpe said.

“Newsagents across Newtown are local community hubs and they provide vital services. We need to protect them and ensure that they are not lost.”

She said the proposed new franchise agreement includes allowing big businesses and supermarket chains to buy into the distribution network, starving small businesses of customers and income.

NSW Treasurer Andrew Constance criticised the proposal saying Labor was gambling with the state’s future.

“Labor’s latest plan is to renege on the deal it made in government regarding the sale of NSW Lotteries in 2010,” Treasurer Constance said.

“As part of the 40 year licence granted to the Tatts Group, a five year moratorium was put in place on the sale of lotteries products, giving newsagencies time to prepare for a competitive market.”

He said reneging on the agreement will deprive the State of growth in duties revenue, trigger massive compensation to the Tatts Group and poison the market’s view of sovereign risk in NSW. “NSW Treasury estimates the potential loss to the State could be as much $1 billion for an ongoing extension of the moratorium,” Mr Constance said.

“The NSW Government has been engaging productively with Tatts and newsagents for weeks over the transition away from exclusivity.

“We will continue this process, and if further measures are needed, we will take them.”

arents of certain children born at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in the past 18 months are being offered new vaccinations for their children after a fault was discovered in a vaccine refrigerator at the hospital.

The fault involved the thermostat of the refrigerator in postnatal ward 8 East and, as a result, the vaccines may have been exposed to temperatures outside their optimum storage range and their effectiveness cannot be guaranteed.

The hospital said the vaccines may

not provide adequate protection against some illnesses but apart from that there is no risk involved in receiving potentially less effective vaccines.

As a precautionary measure, RPA has been contacting all women who were admitted to that ward between August 2013 and January 2015 offering a free clinic to provide re-vaccinations.

The clinic is running till Saturday, January 31 at the Croydon Health Centre, 24 Liverpool Rd, Croydon.

Pyrmont: Police appeal for information on dead man

Sydney: Man caught with drugs at Central Station

Police are appealing for public assistance to identify a man who died in August 2014.

About 7.35am on Thursday, August 28, officers attached to Sydney City Local Area Command were called to the northern footpath on Refinery Drive in Pyrmont, where they located the body of the man outside a building. While the man’s death was not treated as suspicious, police have not been able to formally identify the man or locate any family or friends. He was reportedly known as Andy and had two distinctive tattoos. One his left shoulder is the image of a demon, with the words ‘Death to the world’ and ‘Search and destroy’ across it. The second tattoo, located across his fingers, contains the word ‘Hate’. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers.

A 19-year-old man was caught with a quantity of illicit drugs at Central Railway Station last weekend. About 10.45pm on Sunday, January 25, officers attached to Police Transport Command were undertaking general patrols when they stopped the man at the turnstiles to check for a valid train ticket. The man was unable to produce one and requested to use the toilet whilst police made inquiries into his identification.

After using the toilet, the man was given the opportunity to purchase a valid ticket, but was observed by police to re-enter the toilets. Police followed the man and saw him allegedly reaching for an object behind a toilet door. The man was searched and police allegedly located three plastic bags containing 55 tablets of MDMA.

Redfern: Popular fitness expert to help young girls

Police have joined forces with health and fitness expert Michelle Bridges to work with officers and local youths in Redfern.

Ms Bridges, who has long been an advocate for positive change through empowerment, healthy body and healthy mind, volunteered to assist police officers as they conduct one of their regular fitness classes with 100 local teenage girls as part of their Clean Slate Without Prejudice project.

The program has been running for six years and Detective Superintendent Luke Freudenstein said the police exercise classes help build good health, self worth and community spirit in a fun environment.

A man has been charged with the indecent assault of a teenager in Enmore on Australia Day. About 7pm on Monday, January 26, police attended a theatre on Enmore Road to assist with crowd control at a concert.

At the venue, a 15-year-old girl approached police and reported she had been indecently assaulted during the event.

A short time later, officers arrested a 24-year-old man at the premises and took him to Newtown Police Station.

Police charged the man with indecently assaulting a person under the age of 16.

At the conclusion of the concert, police dispersed a crowd of 2500 people.

A touching tribute to a Labor giant Anthony Albanese leads emotional tribute for close friend and “father figure”, the late Tom Uren CHRIS CONNOLLY

ormer Whitlam Government minister Tom Uren passed away on Monday this week and his good friend Anthony Albanese paid an emotional tribute to him at the Australia Day ceremony in Enmore Park.

“I mourn him today. I pay tribute to him and I thank him on a personal level for his mentoring of me,” Mr Albanese said.

“He was the closest that I had to a father figure over the last 30 years when, as a very young man, I went to work for him and it was an honour and privilege to be his comrade and his friend.”

Mr Uren was born in Balmain in 1921 when the area was still strongly working class. With his father struggling to find work during the Depression, he left school at 13 to help bring in money for the family.

In 1941, he joined the army to fight in World War II but within a year he was a Prisoner of War on the Burma Railway with the legendary ‘Weary’ Dunlop.

“It is remarkable that Tom Uren came through that experience as an advocate for reconciliation – as an opponent, not of the Japanese, but as an opponent of militarism and he lived that way his entire

life,” Mr Albanese said.

He developed a passion for social justice from that experience which inspired him to join the Labor Party where he became a member of parliament for 32 years including as Minister for Urban and Regional Development in the Whitlam Government, where he fought to save the Glebe Estate from a planned motorway, and as a Minister in the Hawke Government.

“He was someone who could reach across the political divide. He was a builder of alliances,” Mr Albanese said.

“When I nominated him for the Companion of the Order of Australia that he was granted just a couple of years ago, his support letters came from Julia Gillard, the then Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, the then Leader of the Opposition and Bob Brown, the then Leader of the Australian Greens. All three of them strongly supported this highest of Australian honours being granted to Tom Uren.”

Mr Albanese said it had been a very sad 12 months for the Labor Party to see giants like Neville Wran, Gough Whitlam and Tom Uren pass away.

“But all of them remained very positive about the future, right up until the end and Tom was a very passionate servant, as he put it, of the people,” he said.

Turning back Time

The night a chimp went on the loose and caused some serious havoc CHRIS CONNOLLY looks back at the amazing event once billed as the “most exciting incident in the history of Marrickville” – featuring none other than a chimpanzee named Casey

O

n the evening of Sunday, December 6, 1914, a chimpanzee escaped from its home in Meeks Road, Marrickville, managing to evade capture for a couple of hours and, in the process, physically injured his owner and a policeman as well as frightened a woman to death.

The following day, the Sydney Morning Herald described it as “possibly the most exciting incident in the history of Marrickville”.

The animal was a performing chimp called Casey who was kept with another chimp at the home of his owner, Thomas Fox, who lived at 64 Meeks Road.

Mr Fox was cleaning the animals’ cages and had chained them up in the backyard but between 7pm and 8pm both managed to escape the chains and get through the front gate of the property onto Meeks Road.

Local residents came out into the streets to see what was happening, which got the animals excited and they started to climb trees and onto the roofs of neighbouring houses.

At one point Casey came down off a roof towards the crowd, which screamed and ran. In the process 41-year-old Emily

Russell had a heart attack and died.

Mr Fox approached Casey to attempt to grab his chain which was still trailing from him but by now he was too excited and swung the chain, striking Fox in the head.

Around 8.30pm, Sergeant Wearin and Constable Toohey from Marrickville Police Station arrived and found a crowd of about 700 in the street surrounding Casey.

Sgt Wearin moved between the crowd and Casey who then charged at the policeman.

He fired his revolver and missed allowing Casey to grab him on the shoulder and strike him in the head, knocking him three or four feet and sending his helmet flying.

When Casey came at him again, Sgt Wearin fired a second time hitting Casey in the foot which caused the ape to sit down and cry. Mr and Mrs Fox were then able to take him back to his cage.

Mr Fox was then taken to hospital but the blow to his head caused him to lose an eye.

He was later fined 40 shillings for not keeping the animal properly secured then sued by Emily Russell’s husband for damages and forced to pay him £450.

Casey had been brought to Australia in 1909 by Ellis Joseph, an American who claimed to have captured the ape in the Ashanti region of what is now Ghana. He toured him around the country before eventually selling him to Fox for £1000

Casey’s escape, however, took the gloss of his popularity.

Fox took him to America and exhibited him there where the news of the incident in Marrickville hadn’t been widely publicised.

Sadly, Casey passed away just two years later of appendicitis.

The Foxes defended Casey’s actions on December 6, 1914, stating he was a gentle animal who could have been recaptured easily if the crowd had been dispersed so he was no longer excited.

I am sick to death of this unpredictable weather; we’ve got scorching hot days, followed by cool rainy ones and my fashion sense is suffering because of it!

After a wonderful warm weekend and a cloudy Monday, I turned up to work on Tuesday without my umbrella, which turned out to be a massive mistake.

In the space of time between getting out of my car and walking through the office door, my hair was drenched, my white and blue striped top had very obvious rain spots on it and my suede shoes were ruined.

All day long I was continually getting comments about how I looked like I had been swimming and I even had someone offer to let me have their umbrella, but I declined.

The weather for Sydney is expected to continue being unpredictable so I think it is timely for us to discuss how we can gracefully deal with a sudden downpour.

First things first, get your hands on a trusty umbrella.

There is a lot to be said for the smaller kind that can slip into your handbag or briefcase but they are only really effective at keeping your head dry, so I like the idea of a big umbrella that you can carry around with you.

When you wake up in the morning and the sky is looking ominous, it is a really good idea to head to work or out for the day well prepared.

When choosing an outfit, opt for darker colours like black or navy blue, which are less likely to show raindrops.

Wearing a jacket with a hood is a great safety-blanket when the sky is threatening rain because when those first drops fall, the hood can go up and your head is kept dry.

If you’re not keen on hoods, try to find a coat with a wide collar because these come in handy when rain hits suddenly.

Women with long hair can tuck their hair down the back of the coat before ‘popping’ the collar to keep dry.

Leather jackets are also a sure-fire way to keep your body dry underneath and there are a range of jackets made from waterproof fabrics that are still fashionable.

Lastly, don’t forget your shoes. I keep a pair of gumboots in my car, just in case I have to wade through puddles.

If the stressor can’t be identified, a urine sample may reveal a urinary tract infection or inflammation and both these conditions are fairly easy to treat.

Don’t let the signs of urinary problems go unnoticed as it can progress to a blockage which is often a medical emergency.

No matter how careful or diligent you are with your warm ups and cool downs, there will come a time when you sustain an injury that will have an effect on your training.

Injuries can happen when you least expect it, whether it be during a workout or even just having fun on the weekend.

The important thing is to address the injury as soon as possible.

It’s not unusual for us to have a little muscle soreness for a day or two after a workout, this is completely normal. But if the pain intensifies or persists for any longer, or it’s not your typical kind of post workout ache, it’s important to bring these to the attention of your trainer so they can be further investigated and the correct form of treatment can be prescribed.

Often the problems can be fixed purely by working on correcting your technique or introducing some effective stretching, but when this doesn’t help it’s time to look further afield for some physical therapy.

Depending on the injury I usually recommend remedial massage as the first port of call. A remedial massage therapist will be able to work on the soft tissue of the muscles and tendons, attempting to bring your body back into balance, loosening tight muscles and will often give you some great stretches to continue with at home.

If your injury has been around for more than a couple of weeks, and/or the remedial massage wasn’t enough, the next level of treatment is definitely physiotherapy. A physiotherapist will take your treatment to the next level by diagnosing the cause, stretching, strengthening and releasing muscles to help you regain your health and alleviate the pain.

Outside of these modalities, chiropractors and osteopaths can also be immensely helpful. They work on different philosophies, but are still able to treat your pain and get you fighting fit again.

The important thing to remember is that any abnormal pain is telling you something so you need to take action to get it treated. Don’t use injury as an excuse, but do be sure to give your injury the attention it needs.

he Apocalypse Theatre Company is putting on a performance called ‘Asylum’ which is designed both to raise awareness of asylum seeker issues and raise funds for the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown.

The company invited playwrights from across Australia to write a piece that responds to the theme of ‘Asylum’, to be presented as staged readings in a new series at Theatre 505 in Surry Hills, aimed at fostering provocative political theatre.

A large number of writers, including asylum seekers who have been granted refuge and one who is still waiting, submitted their work for consideration.

More than 20 of these emerging and established playwrights have had their work selected for inclusion in the series, including Hilary Bell, Mary Rachel Brown, Noëlle Janaczewska and Ross Mueller.

Artistic director Dino Dimitriadis said the Australian Government’s refugee policies continue to be a divisive aspect of the country’s national identity, inciting passionate debate over their political and ethical legitimacy.

“There is no end of opinion available to the interested citizen – online, in our newspapers, on the radio,” Mr Dimitraidis said “But what the theatre provides is a genuinely unique environment for the public to collectively think through the confronting questions this issue raises.”

All of the artists involved are volunteering their time so that the proceeds from the series can be donated in full to the

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Starring: Colin Firth, Michael Caine and Samuel L Jackson ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ is based on the comic book The Secret Service by Mark Millar.

The film revolves around a secret spy organisation that takes on Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin, a street kid from a South London housing estate, as their newest recruit.

Agent Harry Hart decides the young man has potential and so puts him through the agency’s difficult training program to help stop a twisted tech genius who is threatening to take over the world.

The film features a host of stars including Colin Firth and Michael Caine as members of the secret Kingsmen organisation, Samuel L. Jackson as the villain and newcomer Taron Egerton as the wild card

The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn who worked on the hit flicks ‘Kick-Ass’ and ‘X-Men: First Class’.

‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ has received plenty of positive feedback on movie review sites Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. One critic said: “One of the most ridiculously entertaining spy flicks since Roger Moore hung up is safari suit”.

While another said: “Fox may have a new franchise on its hands with this witty homage to 1970’s-era James Bond adventures”.

This film is sure to be a winner with those who are a fan of the comic book or just love a good spy action movie.

Eight years after their breakup punk rockers Sleater-Kinney are back with a new release, ‘No Cities To Love’.

Since the split, singer and guitarist Carrie Brownstein has been working on the absurd comedy sketch show ‘Portlandia’, and it was her co-star, Fred Armisen, who was one of the biggest supporters of the band’s reformation.

Sleater-Kinney were very much champions of the 90’s feminist punk movement and their new release is just as heavy, wild and political as the rest of their back catalogue.

Magic men show off their tricks Inner West Magic men’s futsal team too strong for the Mascot Vipers, seal finals spot CHRIS CONNOLLY

he Inner West Magic are guaranteed a finals birth in the NSW Futsal Premier League after a strong 5-2 victory over Mascot Vipers last weekend.

The Magic are still a chance to finish second in the competition if results go their way in this weekend’s final round robin games. Dural Warriors are all but guaranteed the minor premiership with Enfield Rovers and Inner West one win behind but with Enfield holding a two goal advantage on for and against.

Third will play fourth in a sudden death minor semi-final while second will play first in the major semi-final for a chance to go straight into the grand final and a second chance against the winner of the minor semi if they lose.

This weekend, Inner West take on last-placed Phoenix while Enfield travel to Minto to take on fourth-placed Campbelltown Quake.

Inner West were pleased to take the points in their derby against Mascot last weekend as the Vipers have always troubled the Magic with no more than one goal separating the teams in their previous four games.

Prior to the game, Fogarty had only scored two goals all season but last weekend’s haul

saw him leapfrog many of his teammates to become the side’s second highest goal scorer just behind Daniel Vellonio on seven.

The Inner West Magic are performing well

at all levels of the game with a commanding lead in the Club Championship. Their women’s team also sits third in its competition while their U12 boys also sit on top.
