A

n electrical fault is believed to have caused a house fire in Marrickville this week which saw a number of residents evacuated and a woman hospitalised.

Marrickville Fire Brigade’s Simon Flynn said they were called to the address in Despointes Street about 7.30am on Monday.

“Police were already on the scene and had evacuated three occupants of the house. They have been taken to hospital. One was suffering burns to her respiratory system,” he said.

Officer Flynn said it took the fire crews about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire and the close proximity of neighbouring properties made the job quite difficult.

“Police evacuated neighbouring properties as well,” he said.

“The fire spread to part of the fascia board of an adjoining terrace but we were able to extinguish it without serious damage to that property.”

The occupants of the home were believed to be a 36-year-old woman and her two teenage children.

“Specialist investigators will determine the cause of the fire later today but we believe it started in one of the bedrooms,” Officer Flynn said.

“Obviously it was a cold night. We do see an increase in house fires in winter. We encourage residents to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their properties and to be careful with their heating systems at this time of year.”

Figuring out the jigsaw that is the new Australian Senate This week saw a bunch of new Senators take their seats in Parliament and while we have some idea of how they might vote, they have shown enough independence of thought to make it clear that the Government will have some work to do to get its agenda through the Senate over the next couple of years.

Just to recap, there are 76 Senators so the Government needs 39 of them on board to get legislation passed. The Coalition of Liberal, National, Liberal National and Country Liberal Parties between them have 33 Senators so they need to get an additional six.

If they can get the Labor Party with 25 Senators or the Greens Party with 10 Senators to support them, then they will be fine.

If not, they need to get six votes out of the eight remaining minor party Senators which include three from the Palmer United Party; Glenn Lazarus, Jacqui Lambie and Dio Wang; independent Nick Xenophon; John Madigan from the Democratic Labor Party; David Leyonhjelm from the Liberal Democratic Party; Bob Day from Family First and Ricky Muir from the Australian Motoring Enthusiasts Party.

On the face of it, seven of the eight look to be broadly conservative so you would expect them to support the Government on most issues.

But, unlike the major parties, their votes aren’t locked in as a group and six of the eight are new to the Senate so somewhat inexperienced in the ways of politicians and lobbyists.

This means there are plenty of opportunities to sway their votes on certain issues.

We saw that this week when Senator Muir joined with Senators Xenophon, Madigan and the Labor and Greens Senators to block a Government bid to cut short debate on the repeal of the carbon tax.

Senator Muir has been relatively quiet since last year’s election.

Virtually all that was known about him was he worked in a sawmill, was once involved in a kangaroo poo fight, he struggled to answer questions about the Australian political system in a television interview, and he had aligned himself with the Palmer Senators.

But this week he revealed he had a green streak and insisted the Government retain the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), which was slated for abolition as part of the Government’s budget cuts.

If they bully the crossbenchers they will be ineffective

with Labor and the Greens to help block a budget measure to repeal a round of tax cuts that were part of the carbon price compensation.

And to make life even more frustrating for the Government, one of its own Senators, Queenslander Ian Macdonald crossed the floor to support an amendment from independent Senator Xenophon.

That amendment was unsuccessful but it signals that Senator Macdonald can’t always be relied on to toe the party line.

So the Government needs to make sure every time they need to get a bill through the Senate, they have their 39 votes.

There is a precedent for this. After the 2010 Federal election, Labor and the Coalition effectively had 72 seats each in the House of Representatives with six cross-benchers, thus needing four of the six to pass legislation.

While Julia Gillard got four of the six to support her on confidence and supply issues, the Government had to work the numbers on every other piece of legislation.

They became surprisingly adept at negotiating with the disparate group of cross benchers which included Greens member Adam Bandt; progressive independent Andrew Wilkie; conservative rural independents Bob Katter, Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott, as well as Western Australian National Tony Crook.

The same Crook who initially sat on the crossbenches before joining the Coalition party room and renegade Liberal Peter Slipper, who quit the party mid-term to become an independent.

They passed over 500 pieces of legislation during that term, mainly by listening to the concerns of the cross-benchers and coming up with amendments that were acceptable to at least four of them, which is no small feat in today’s political climate.

At the time, Tony Abbott and his team derided the Gillard Government as being “illegitimate” but it is now their turn to learn the art of gentle persuasion.

If they attempt to bully the cross-benchers, they will find themselves a singularly ineffective government.

But if they can build a consensus with them, they might just find that, like the previous Government, they can get most of their agenda through.

One thing is for certain, it’s going to be very interesting to watch from the sidelines.

Cry for heritage listing Councillors grapple with future use of Beynon and Hayward site CHRIS CONNOLLY

arrickville Council voted narrowly last week not to proceed with heritage listing the Beynon and Hayward building in Petersham, but a rescission motion will see the issue come back to Council on August 4.

Council contracted Paul Davies Heritage Architects in March this year to conduct an initial heritage assessment.

They concluded: “the warehouse at No.6 Livingstone Road is considered to be of local heritage significance... on historical, historical association, aesthetic/technical and rarity criteria. The heritage listing of the building and site in the Marrickville Local Environmental Plan is recommended”.

The building is adjacent to the Council car park in Chester Street and Council has also called for expressions of interest relating to development of the car park.

While those expressions of interest are confidential, it is believed there is interest in developing the Beynon and Hayward site in conjunction with the car park site.

Greens Councillor Max Phillips, who initiated consideration of the heritage listing of the site said it would be shocking

if the building was allowed to be demolished.

“This is an iconic building that is much loved in our community and the Greens will do all we can to protect its heritage value,” Cr Phillips said.

“The argument that we can’t declare this particular building heritage because it might mess with a developer’s plans and Council’s own wishes to expand the Chester Street car park, goes against the whole notion of heritage protection.”

He said the numbers are finely balanced on this decision and the ball is in the Labor Councillors’ court.

“Heritage decisions should be blind to who may want to develop a particular site.

They should be purely made on whether a building has heritage value or not,” he said.

Independent Councillor Victor Macri said Council previously tried to buy the building itself to knock it down so they could extend the car park but were out bid.

“If someone else buys the building and does all the checks you can’t move the goal posts,” Cr Macri said.

“The building might be rare but parking is rarer. For sustainability of the shops, it’s critical they get more parking.”

He also suggested opening up the lane next to the building.

New research into the drinking habits and preferences of Australians released this week reveals less than 15 per cent of Aussies are drinking the recommended daily intake of water, with a quarter of Australians drinking less than two glasses of water per day.

The findings, from independent research commissioned by SodaStream, also reveal that more than 50 per cent of people drink even less water during winter, with only one-third maintaining the recommended daily intake during the colder months.

16-year-old Filipino girl with horrific burn injuries is to be given a new lease on life after ground-breaking surgery in Sydney this week.

When Theresa Rosales was nine she was playing with her sister and knocked over a kerosene lamp, spilling kerosene on herself, which caught alight.

“Our neighbour saw what happened and threw a bucket of water on her but that made the flames get bigger,” said Theresa’s mother Elna Rosales.

They managed to smother the flames with a blanket and get Theresa to hospital where the horrific and painful burns were treated.

She was unconscious for six days and remained in hospital for nine months before being discharged into the care of her mother, with contractures and open wounds.

Contractures are where scarred skin tightens and can cause other problems, particularly in growing children.

In Theresa’s case, they were significant enough to change the shape of her shoulders and jawbone over the years as she has grown.

An Interplast team, which included Associate Professor Peter Haertsch, Director of Burns Services at Concord Hospital, visited Theresa and arranged for her to come to Australia for surgery.

Professor Haertsh, who conducted the surgery, said he had never seen a case like this before but the surgery went very well.

He estimated Theresa would require another two to five skin operations over a period of six months to alleviate the effect of the contractures and will then require further operations and therapy.

“Her jawbone was made longer by being pulled so she will require further maxillofacial surgery,” he said.

In between surgery she will be cared for by the Children First Foundation, which also helped arrange for her travel to Australia.

Elna Rosales said this surgery was a great opportunity for Theresa.

“It has been very hard to see her growing up like this. If I could change places with her I would,” Ms Rosales said.

he community will get to have its say on four possible options for the future of the old Marrickville Hospital site, which will include a new community hub and library.

Marrickville Council will consider the results of its Expressions of Interest process at its meeting next Tuesday with four options to then be released for public consultation.

Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen said they resolved to seek EOIs from developers to maximise the use of the site.

“Council agreed that this was a sensible way forward – to go out and test the market, unlock the value of the site, and see what options are available to build our new Community Hub and Library with minimal cost to ratepayers,” she said.

“While we all agree we need a new Community Hub and Library, our community told us that funding it from a rate rise was not their preferred option and they wanted us to investigate no-cost alternatives.”

Greens Councillor Max Phillips said the development of the site should be a community hub and civic space to make Marrickvillians proud.

“There is a real danger that after almost

two decades of holding this site, Council will squander the opportunity for a truly civic development and instead simply let a developer build high-rise apartments all over it,” Cr Phillips said.

“The Marrickville LGA has the lowest amount of open space in Australia, so the Greens want to use this unique opportunity to provide a new park.”

Independent Councillor Victor Macri said it was still early days and there are no designs yet but there will definitely be a library and open space.

“For me it’s about delivering a library at no cost to the ratepayer,” Cr Macri said.

“I still believe we can achieve that.

Everyone supported that, including the Greens and Labor.”

Council completed the initial early works on the old Marrickville Hospital site late last year, including demolition and removal of two non-heritage buildings, removal of hazardous material and some trees, and securing of the whole site.

Since April 2011 Council has already conducted extensive consultation with the community about the old hospital site and how to provide the community with a new Community Hub and Library, including through community workshops, surveys, ‘Have a Say’ days, presentations to community consultative committees and online forums.

Police need help identifying man in relation to card thefts

Accelerant poured over car and set alight in Marrickville

Police investigating a number of credit card frauds in Sydney have released images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

It’s believed the credit cards were sourced via mail thefts that occurred in Dulwich Hill in April and May 2014.

The stolen cards were then used in the Marrickville, St George, Miranda and Wolli Creek areas.

Detectives from St George Local Area Command are investigating the offences and have released CCTV images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Anyone with information about the man’s identity is urged to come forward.

Police are investigating an incident where a vehicle was set alight in Marrickville last week.

About 1am on Friday, July 4, 2014, a taxi driver travelling along Wicks Street observed a Silver Toyota Corolla on fire.

Marrickville Fire Brigade attended a short time later and extinguished the fire.

Ambulance officers were also called due to the owner of the vehicle suffering shock.

Fire fighters determined that an accelerant was poured on the rear of the vehicle and set alight, which caused extensive damage to the vehicle.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a robbery at a gym occurred in Sydney last week. About 9.25pm last Wednesday, July 2, a 21-year-old man was working at the counter of a gym on Park and Pitt Street, when a man entered and approached the counter. The man grabbed an empty cream bag from over the counter and as he was leaving, he threatened the 21-year-old.

The man then ran onto Pitt Street, and fortunately no one was injured during the incident.

The man was described as of Caucasian appearance, 180cm tall, light coloured facial hair, and was wearing a red jacket and beanie.

A

boriginal women in abusive relationships might feel forced to stay in those relationships with the closure of organisations such as Innari Housing in Marrickville.

Kellie Wright from Innari Housing said under the Baird Government’s Going Home, Staying Home reforms, small organisations have lost tenders for funding which typically have gone to large church-run organisations.

“Across NSW, 60 to 80 per cent of housing organisations run by Aboriginal people are being shut down,” Ms Wright said.

“They don’t understand the history of Aboriginal people and the church with the Stolen Generations. A lot of Aboriginal people will do anything before asking for help from the church.”

Ms Wright said the Inner West has a bigger Aboriginal population than Redfern but will now have no specialist homelessness services for Aboriginal people.

“Innari supports 37 beds in 12 houses across the Inner West. We’ve lost all those houses. They’ve gone to St Vincent de Paul,” she said.

“They don’t have any experience working with Aboriginal people.”

“This was considered important because Aboriginal people make up only two per cent of the population but seven per cent of homelessness statistics,” she said.

Ms Wright met with Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Linda Burney and Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen this week to discuss the organisation’s looming closure.

Ms Burney said she was appalled at the way organisations such as Innari Housing had been treated and the complete disregard the NSW Government had for Aboriginal people.

“Many of the women seeking refuge at Innari Housing have complex issues that extend beyond their homelessness, which makes specialist services so crucial,” Ms Burney said.

“Innari Housing provides these people with security and stability. Now the rug has been pulled out from under them and they simply have nowhere to go.”

Mayor Haylen said the immediate future of people currently living in Innari’s houses was now in question.

“The fact that this centre is now facing closure is another very sad example of the Baird Government failing in its responsibility to support the most vulnerable in our community,” she said.

“Homelessness shelters are crucial for people seeking safety and support and the Inner West can’t afford to see a specialist service for the Aboriginal community close its doors.”

Major changes to bus stops and timetables CHRIS CONNOLLY

ix bus stops in Tempe, Enmore and Newtown are to be removed and a number of others relocated in order to boost the reliability of Inner West bus services, according to Transport for NSW. And, in a win for Tempe residents, Transport for NSW has revealed the operating hours of the 425 bus service will be extended to include shopping hours.

“As part of the 2014-15 Growth Bus Program, Transport for NSW will extend the current peak period Route 425 (Tempe-Dulwich Hill) service to operate during shopping hours between Monday and Saturday,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.

“This will help customers on the route get to and from the shops at more convenient times throughout the day. Full details will be released closer to the introduction date.”

Acting Secretary of Transport for NSW, Tim Reardon said the Government has committed to improving journey times by introducing bus priority infrastructure along key corridors, including more bus and transit lanes and priority at traffic lights.

“Now that we’ve consulted on our plan

to improve Inner West bus services and taken community feedback on board, we’re ready to begin work and streamline bus stop and traffic arrangements to improve the journeys of Inner West bus customers,” Mr Reardon said.

Work will start in August to relocate bus stops on the Princes Highway at Tempe, King Street, Enmore Road, City Road in Newtown and Broadway.

Mr Reardon said they took on board feedback from community members and councils regarding proposed changes to bus stops, parking and traffic arrangements in the Inner West.

“We re-evaluated the proposed bus stop closures with community feedback in mind such as keeping stops near Short Street, St Peters, and Princes Highway, Sydenham,” Mr Reardon said.

“It is essential that we improve service reliability and travel times for customers by better managing the causes of delays to buses and allowing buses to move in and out of stops more easily.”

Cr Chris Woods who has been campaigning on this issue with local residents said he was pleased that five bus stops flagged for closure had been saved and he was still trying to assess the effect of the other closures on local residents.

Inner West dominates Fellowship finalist list

number of Inner West artists have been shortlisted for the 2014 NSW Visual Arts (Emerging) Fellowship.

The Fellowship is provided by Arts NSW in partnership with Artspace in Woolloomooloo.

Each of the 12 finalists will work with Artspace executive director Alexie Glass-Kantor and curator of programs Sam Zammit to develop their work for an exhibition, which will open in October.

The winner of the Fellowship, which is valued at $30,000 will be announced on the opening night of the exhibition.

“The 2013 instalment of the NSW Fellowship was a great iteration of this benchmark award,” Ms Glass-Kantor said.

“Building on the momentum of last year’s show, Artspace has been working closely with ArtsNSW over the last six months to affirm and strengthen the value of the NSW Fellowship, sharing a commitment to ensuring that this tremendous award endures.”

Minister for the Arts Troy Grant said the Fellowship was open to visual artists in the first eight years of their professional practice who have had at least one solo show and one group show.

“Through this Fellowship the NSW Government will provide $30,000 to an emerging visual artist to undertake a program of professional development, such as overseas travel, residencies, or mentorships,” Minister Grant said.

“The NSW Government is offering this Fellowship as part of its support for the professional development of artists in NSW.” The shortlisted artists include Tessa Zettel from Erskineville whose practice encompasses sculpture and installation, drawing, printmaking, writing, curating and design.

Baden Pailthorpe, also from Erskineville, is a new media artist whose work has recently focused on the re-appropriation and manipulation of military technologies, including simulators, cinema and video games.

Jonny Niesche from Annandale, had a solo exhibition ‘Too Many Heroes’ at Firstdraft Gallery last year.

Also listed as a finalist is Lillian O’Neil from Alexandria, Justine Varga from Paddington, Sarah Contos from Elizabeth Bay, Tim Bruniges from Killarney Heights, Leyla Stevens and Marian Tubbs both from Paddington, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran from Darlinghurst, Jason Wing from Lilyfield, and Agatha Gothe-Snape from Balmain.

The Southern Highlands of NSW has produced Australia’s biggest-ever truffle that weighed in at a whopping 1.172kgs (approx 2.5lbs).

And Ted and Barbara Smith who own Yelverton Truffles at the town of Robertson two hours south of Sydney, didn’t even need their truffle-sniffing dog to find this one, because it had forced itself up through the ground amid their 300-plus truffle inoculated oak trees.

And when their own scales gave up weighing it at 1kg, they had to take it to the local Post Office to get the exact weight measured there.

The Smiths got calls from chefs around Australia and even Asia keen to buy their super-sized “underground treasure,” that unlike most truffles that grow to between golf and cricket-ball size, was more soccer ball shaped.

But the truffle has not gone to an eatery outside the Southern Highlands: Bowral’s Centennial Vineyards Restaurant bought it to use in specialities that’ll be on the menu during July, including truffle and scrambled eggs, truffle omelettes and truffle and pasta.

And while no-one’s saying how much was paid for this French Black Perigord whopper, truffles can fetch $2,000 a kilogram in this country, suggesting this one would have been worth around $2,350.

n April 1, 1944, a total of 8355 people crowded into Marrickville Oval to see the final of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition between Marrickville and St George.

The game was a nail biter which went down to the last over before Marrickville triumphed for its first and only first grade premiership.

The story of that game has been turned into a book, Marrickville’s Grandest Day

by Lyall Gardner, Lawrie Daly and Ronald Cardwell.

This week Randwick-Petersham club president and former Australian test cricketer Mike Whitney joined with former Petersham-Marrickville club president Wayne Mulherin to present a copy of the book to Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen.

“Marrickville Council is really pleased to add this book to our history and heritage collection, where it will be displayed with pleasure and pride,” Mayor Haylen said.

“Our local history is a long and fascinating one, and this is another of those incredibly interesting historical vignettes that pop up from time to time – when an 8,000-strong crowd turned out 70 years ago to see a very special milestone.”

Seven years after the famous win Marrickville merged with Petersham to form the Petersham-Marrickville club and in 2001, they merged with Randwick to form Randwick-Petersham which still views Marrickville as one of its foundation clubs.

“We’re lucky to still have the strong and enthusiastic Randwick Petersham Cricket Club. They are part of our local fabric and I thank them for recording forever this amazing piece of history,” Cr Haylen said.

The book tells how Marrickville faced a confident St George side which had won the previous four first grade premierships and were led by the intimidating figure of Bill ‘Tiger’ O’Reilly, a legendary Australian leg spinner at the height of his power.

St George batted first and made 150 and Marrickville would have viewed that as an achievable target in the circumstances but O’Reilly bowled well taking six wickets.

So going into the last over, Marrickville required 10 runs with just two wickets in hand, a seemingly impossible task.

O’Reilly went for the jugular, bowling straight at the stumps but the cool-headed batsman Horne lofted the great bowler back over his head for six. The tables had turned and Marrickville were able to score the remaining runs for a memorable victory.

Glebe robbery Police are appealing for information after a man was assaulted during a convenience-store robbery in Glebe.

About 11.20pm on Wednesday, July 9, two men with their faces covered entered the Glebe Point Road business.

The men approached the male shop assistant and began punching him in the neck and back. They then pulled him towards the cash register and demanded he open it. After taking cash and cigarettes, the men ran from the premises.

Emergency services attended a short time later.

The shop assistant was not seriously injured in the incident.

A crime scene was established, which has been examined by forensic officers.

Detectives from Leichhardt Local Area Command have started an investigation into the robbery.

They are appealing for information from the public about two men who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Both men are described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, aged in their mid 20’s, with a thin build, and wearing dark-coloured pants.

he Australian Taxation Office is warning residents to be on the lookout for a malicious scam that intimidates taxpayers into paying a fake tax debt over the phone.

ATO Chief Technology Officer Todd Heather said the scam is particularly worrying because the caller threatens taxpayers with legal action or arrest if they do not immediately hand over money and their personal financial details over the phone.

“Scammers are becoming more cunning in their attempts to defraud the public and trick them into handing over money, their tax file number or other personal information,” Mr Heather said.

“We encourage people to contact us if they are worried they may have fallen victim to a scam call, email, SMS or a faceto-face scam.”

He said the ATO will send taxpayers emails, SMS messages or official social media updates alerting them to new services but will never request personal or financial information by SMS or email.

“Your personal information is the key to your identity. Protecting it is as important as locking your front door each day,” Mr Heather said.

He suggests never putting your tax file number on your resume and only giving it to your employer after you have started your job; never share personal information such as TFNs or bank account details on social media; and you should change passwords you may have shared with family or friends.

He also recommends making sure tax agents are registered by checking at www. tpb.gov.au/onlineregister.

If people receive a call from the ATO and are concerned about providing their personal information over the phone, they should ask for the caller’s name and phone them back through the ATO’s switchboard on 13 28 69.

If people think they may have fallen victim to a phone scam, contact the ATO on 1800 060 062 (8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday).

Since March 1, 2014 the ATO has seen a spike in reports from the public of email and phishing scams from 9,368 to 11,344 compared with the same period last year.

To increase community awareness of scams the ATO has launched a new video campaign on www.ato.gov.au/ identitycrime with helpful tips to protect personal information.

A lesson from Mother Nature It was to be a beautiful family getaway home, but the domed residence of the Lee family is a sight not for its beauty...

etired American independent oil producer Bob Lee was well ahead of his time when in the early 1980’s he built a family holiday home at remote Cape Romano on Florida’s Marco Island; an almost space age like half dozen interconnecting concrete domes squatting atop sturdy stilts overlooking the beach.

Today curious locals and tourists alike still make their way to the Cape for a look at Mr Lee’s handiwork, but rather than coming upon a futuristic marvel, they’re confronted with the sad sight of his igloolike structures now collapsed, graffiticovered and surrounded by sea – the victims of Mother Nature at her ferocious worst.

When Mr Lee, a fervent tinkerer, handyman and dreamer, first thought up the idea of a beachside dome house, he built and perfected a prototype where the family lived 1,100km away in Gatlinburg in Tennessee that still stands today.

Retiring at just 44 on the wealth from his oil ventures, Bob Lee had to barge every-

thing to Cape Romano for his isolated getaway, including even the fresh water to mix the concrete it would be built from.

The house included an 87,000 litre water reservoir under one of the domes that was fed by rainwater and filtered and used in showers, dishwasher and toilets.

There were also vast solar panels set apart from the house to generate enough electricity for the residence.

Yet despite spending two years completing his amazing structure, Bob and Margaret Lee and their daughter Janet lived there for just two years, selling out in 1984 – only to repossess the property three years later after the buyer defaulted.

Cruelly in 1992 Hurricane Andrew bore down ferociously on Cape Romano, ripping away the house’s outer two domes.

And when the Lees sold it once more, unfortunately for the new owner, just a few months later another hurricane, Wilma in October 2005 pounded Florida with devastating 190km/h winds.

This time the house was less lucky. Many of its pillars were fractured by the massive seas, the domes subsequently slumped perilously, and wind and rain trashed its interiors. And with much of the beach gone, the house now stands forlornly stranded off-shore.

My relationship with the mirror is one that I wouldn’t describe as positive – it’s full of frustration, stress, confusion and annoyance but it isn’t all bad, every now and then it makes me smile.

Usually, I wake up in the morning and head straight for the bathroom, where I stare at my reflection for a while – I check if yesterday’s pimple has gone down, inspect whether that new beauty fad has actually made my skin brighter and grimace at my hair.

I head to the kitchen to have breakfast, I eat and then head straight back to the bathroom for my usual beauty routine. I stand in front of the mirror for an average of about 15 minutes at this point to get my face and hair primed for the day.

I leave the mirror to change into something to wear to work and return to it to check my outfit looks okay – this takes much longer than it should – and I head out the door.

I stare at myself in the mirror about five times throughout the day and occasionally use the reverse camera on my smartphone to check if I have any lunch stuck in my teeth.

Once I arrive home after work I head straight to my bedroom to change into something more comfortable and stare at myself in the mirror in order to readjust my hair.

The next day I repeat this routine and despite knowing that I have no reason not to, I never really feel content with how I look. Why am I telling you this? Sadly, according to a study by Dove, one in three women say they feel anxious when they look in the mirror and choose a negative word to describe their appearance.

One in five of us have never been happy with our reflection and fuel these negative feelings by checking the mirror multiple times during the day.

Two in five women feel ‘fat’ when they look in the mirror and what’s more startling is that many young girls are copying this behaviour because they see it in their mothers, mentors and friends.

So essentially, by feeling terrible about our own reflections, we are making others feel bad about theirs too and it is totally unnecessary.

Your veterinarian might prescribe medication that affects chemicals in the brain, but this is mostly effective if combined with behavioural modification strategies. A pheromone called “Feliway” is available in diffuser and spray form and it has a calming effect on cats and may be an option in mild cases.

I’m loving this cool, sunny weather at the moment. It’s easy to get out and get some activity in. And there are lots of reasons to!

A recent ‘Science Daily’ report showed that regular exercise can reduce the risk and symptoms of more than 20 physical and mental health conditions just for starters, and can also slow down how quickly your body ages.

A review of research, which summarised the findings of 40 papers published between 2006 and 2010, found that exercise improves conditions including cancer, heart disease, dementia, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure.

Exercise is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful ways to improve your health. After reviewing the 40 papers, researchers found that exercise reduces the risk of at least two dozen health conditions, ranging from cancer and heart disease to type 2 diabetes, stroke, dementia and depression.

Exercise also slows down the rate of aging itself, providing perhaps the closest example of a real life fountain of youth as we will ever find.

Hopefully if you get out and get the exercise in now, you won’t get any of those conditions in the first place.

Don’t be the clown who says ‘why bother, you have to die from something’... normally as they are shoving a hot dog or cigarette in their mouth. Yes they will definitely die, and sooner rather than later.

But in the meantime, for those of us that want a good quality of life and enjoy being active and healthy, know that exercise is a huge source of major health benefits.

Many are proven but there are a whole lot more we don’t even know about.

The best thing I can recommend is for you to do the research yourself, and then go out and do a half hour of some kind of activity you enjoy that’s at a fairly intense level for you.

After you have finished sit down while your breath comes back. Then answer one question. How do you feel?

Miller-Heidke’s not scared of “freaking out” people f you read enough articles about music you’ll start to notice the same words used many times over to describe different artists. That’s why it’s refreshing when you come across a phrase like the one best selling author Neil Gaiman used to describe singer/songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke.

After hearing Kate’s voice Gaiman said it was like “being f****d by butterflies”.

“It was excellent and that’s probably one of my favourite comments as well,” MillerHeidke said.

“It’s so supremely evocative. You can’t help but feel a bit of a fluttering,” she laughed.

Kate Miller-Heidke is very much deserving of such a description. She uses her classically trained voice to add an operatic element to her alt-pop music, but it’s not all beauty and light.

“I guess I have a relatively experimental approach to using my voice and I’ve probably got a bigger range of dynamics and tones and just fun stuff to use my voice as an instrument and play around with it,” she said.

“I think I probably do that more than most other singer/songwriters, particularly in a live context, it’s fun to use those textures to kind of freak people out,” she laughed.

Miller-Heidke’s performances are theatrical, intriguing and beautiful, and come August the talented songstress will be bringing her live show to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

“I always play in Sydney but I just want to make sure I’ve got the suburbs covered,” she said.

Joining her will be her full band, which includes husband and musical soul mate Keir Nuttall.

The two have been long time collaborators and, as with any partnership, there’s positives and negatives to spending so much time together.

“I think because we know each other so well and you know we’re best friends we’re definitely on the same musical wave length and we can, onstage, we play together so much that we can almost communicate without words – without sounding cheesy,” Miller-Heidke said.

“But yeah obviously we send each other a bit insane and it’s nice to have the rest of the band and the crew as a bit of a buffer zone sometimes.”

The August tour will see Miller-Heidke performing tracks from her album ‘O Vertigo!’ which was released in March this year.

using crowd-funding through PledgeMusic.

“It was incredible and yeah, the support I got through that was overwhelming.

That was definitely a positive experience,” she said.

Though, Miller-Heidke seems keen to explore other avenues for future projects.

“I’m not sure if I would do it again next time. I think the world is changing so quickly and the music industry... it seems like it’s constantly in a state of flux. So who knows where we’ll be in six months,” she said.

“I don’t think I can go back and ask those same people for money again. I’m going to need to figure out a different plan next time,” she laughed.

After the tour Miller-Heidke will be heading off to the UK for a string of shows before she makes her way to New York in October where she will perform with the Metropolitan Opera.

The talented singer is also currently writing a children’s opera for Opera Australia.

“It’s a new opera, adapting a book by Shaun Tan called The Rabbits and yeah I guess they kind of just took a leap of faith in asking me but I’ve loved being involved,” she said.

While speaking to Miller-Heidke about

the types of music and musicians that inspire her you start to see that her path was never going to be one that involved predictable performances or mainstream pop songs.

“I saw a guy called Kirin J Callinan. He’s from Sydney actually. I saw him perform last week at the NGV and it was absolutely electrifying. It was so dangerous and that was really thrilling to watch,” she said.

“I like music that transports me or tells a story. I really like the theatre. I’m going to see ‘Into The Woods’ next month, which I’m very excited about. So musicals are a big thing for me,” she said.

Though Miller-Heidke does have one dislike when it comes to live music.

“As I get older I don’t like stuff that’s too loud, sometimes sound engineers actually hurt my ears. It feels like I’m getting punched in the ears,” she said.

“I don’t like to be injured from watching a gig. That’s my main requirement,” she laughed.

The ever quirky and delightful Kate Miller-Heidke will be performing at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, August 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $59.

The captivating music of Brazil Marrickville artist captures the essence of Brazilian jazz and other mesmerising genres

I pay homage to music that has communicated an essence to me of joy, of sorrow...

world that is bossa nova and much more.

She cut her teeth performing in a cappella groups, jazz bands and improvised theatre in Sydney, Kuala Lumpur and even Edinburgh.

But in 2010, she rediscovered the beauty of Brazilian music that first captured her imagination as a child.

She spent three months in Rio de Janeiro performing with local musicians, and seeking out the wisdom of elders to deepen her understanding of Brazilian music.

Her journey of musical discovery led to an ABC radio documentary, a show and live CD ‘A Felicidade’, which was launched to full houses in both Sydney and Brisbane in 2012, and has been enjoying national airplay since.

As well as performing a gorgeous selection of Brazilian tunes, Anna interprets gems from other genres so her shows are always full of delightful surprises.

“I pay homage to music that has communicated an essence to me – of joy, of sorrow, or something less tangible – but no less moving,” she says.

“From the irrepressible beat of sambas to the enchanting melodies of bossa novas and choros; from the joy of Ella Fitzgerald to the dreaming of Joni Mitchell; and from the soaring purity of Eva Cassidy to the passionate Ladino depth of Yasmin Levy.”

hey frustrated many of Dutchman Abel Tasman’s attempts to land on what was ultimately to be named after him – Tasmania – but it’s those same tempest-like winds that today are so integral to the success of the state’s great cool-climate

vineyards.

Now Heemskerk, named after Tasman’s 1640’s flagship, have released a range of wines under a well-chosen Abel’s Tempest label, including amongst them a marvellous 2012 Chardonnay created from fruit from two cool-climate Tasmanian regions; the Coal River Valley down in its south-east and the Tamar Valley away up in its north.

Bringing to the fore the finest of characteristics of the fruits of these valleys, winemakers Charles ‘Chilly’ Hargrave and Peter Munro have put together a wine that’s awash with generous lemony citrus and nectarine flavours and subtle oak. And they’ve generously paid tribute to the skills of Heemskerk viticulturist Jamie Hewet for the extraordinary quality of fruit he supplied them for this wine.

At a well-pitched $25 this is a delight to enjoy with obvious roast chicken or other white-meat dishes, or go a step further and pay homage to its Tasmanian heritage with a variety of seafoods from salmon to lobster and abalone.

One to note: Rosemount’s Diamond Label series has been around for a long while now, and its ever-faithful Diamond Label Cabernet Sauvignon is a firm favourite amongst those who like a good steak at just $16.

Exelby finds a new home at Seven After she was famously dumped from the former breakfast show ‘Wake Up’ on Ten, one of the nicest people in news, Natasha Exelby, has landed herself a new job… at Seven. While details are still scarce at the moment, Exelby is understood to be working with Seven News in Sydney.

She last week tweeted she was excited to begin a new chapter in her life.

It’s the show that’s had more lifelines than an episode of ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’, but once again cult comedy ‘Community’ has been picked up for another season, this time by Yahoo. A few months ago NBC finally axed the show after five seasons on the air with fans upset, but that was until Yahoo rescued it as an online series for a 13 episode run.

Congratulations to Melbourne couple Adam and Lisa who won the second series of ‘House Rules’ on Sunday night. Nearly two million viewers tuned in to see the young couple defeat lovable Perth pair Carole and Russell. The show will be back next year.

Now that ‘House Rules’ is done for the year, Channel Seven has wasted no time in airing its next big franchise, ‘The X-Factor’. The hit singing show, which sees the return of all of last year’s judges, will premiere this Sunday night at 6.30pm. Will it be bigger than ‘The Voice’?

I told you last week Channel Ten had picked up Ian Thorpe for their Commonwealth Games coverage later this month, well in the lead up to his TV comeback, Thorpe will be interviewed by British legend Sir Michael Parkinson. The ‘tell-all’ chat which will air on Ten on Sunday, July 13.

ADULT SERVICES A bit of history about Kings Court Massage by Big John: Back in the 1990s massage places like Kings Court were illegal but at the same time they were prolific with most suburbs having at least one brothel and one massage place. They were usually upstairs in older strip shopping centres and in some cases suburban houses in low income areas. Some were very well decked out in quality streets in Kings Cross and even in the City.

Some, like our place, were quite large and famous.

We needed to advertise and we looked around at likely places. We were unable to get into the Australian version of Playboy which we thought represented our style, however we were approached by Australian Penthouse and soon developed a relationship that has lasted until this day. We were making Kings Court to be the largest of all the massage places and because we didn’t do full service we wanted to look different to those other places. It was decided to try some cartoon advertising.

I recalled that as a child I had read Mandrake Comics in the last page of the Woman’s Weekly and I figured that the best place to have cartoon advertising was on the inside back cover so people could easily find us in the same place each time.

So we began. The concept was to let people know about us and try to influence them that we were providing “harmless fun for men.” These cartoons were very good for that. We also wanted to make the cartoons have stories so that each time the readers would have a look to see what was happening next.

This kind of colour advertising was very expensive to create but we were able to find a talented cartoonist and I wrote the stories and learned how to use Quark Express to make the ads on my Mac computer. We found a place to make the separations and do the proofs. In those days desk top publishing was just beginning and the files had to be delivered on Zip Disks that were mailed back to us. Later on, that changed to CDs which were cheap enough to be discarded. Today this advert is produced as a PDF and sent off by email.

Despite some challenges, KIA continues to build success with impressive sales results

Solid sales across key models have kept Kia ahead of the curve with a return to the Top Ten sales leaders list for June.

Sales of 3,305 new cars for June, the second best month ever for Kia in Australia, underscored first half sales of 15,299 and put Kia Motors Australia on target to maintain the company’s business plan through to the end of the year.

“There is no question that the market has faced – and will continue to face – some serious challenges,” Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer, Damien Meredith said.

“However, in the face of those challenges Kia has continued to produce and deliver models that lead the way in style, safety and value.”

Mr Meredith said that one of the most pleasing aspects of the June sales was that there was strong demand for a range of Kia models.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that Kia is consolidating its determination to deliver a mix of models that meet consumer expectations. No longer is this a Rio-driven sales story, but rather one in which Sportage, Cerato, and Sorento have thrown their weight into the sales ring.”

While Rio continued to lead the sales with 967 finding new homes in June, the enhanced European-sourced compact SUV Sportage weighed in with 870 new registrations, followed by the small car Cerato, which stepped up with 856 sales.

The Sorento recorded 230 sales.

n what seemed like a re-enactment of the musical ‘West Side Story’, the Sharks muscled in on the Jets’ patch last Saturday and left convincing winners 36-16.

But the Jets are vowing to even the scores in the finals.

Representative team selections made life difficult for the Newtown Jets with a number of players called up to the Roosters to cover for State-of-Origin players Boyd Cordner, Aiden Guerra and Daniel Tupou; while the Cronulla Sharks were able to call on some eligible Melbourne Storm players who had a bye last weekend.

Newtown started poorly, conceding three tries to the Sharks in the first 13 minutes and not actually handling the ball in Cronulla’s half until the 20th minute.

However, five-eighth Samisoni Langi split the Sharks defensive line in the 30th minute to score near the posts at the Sydenham Road end, then Saulala Houma crashed through the Cronulla defenders with one of his angled charging runs to reduce the deficit to 18-10.

time with the score 24-10. A half-time rev-up saw the Jets come out firing in the second half.

Samisoni Langi was held up over the line in the 44th minute and backrower David Harris went desperately close to scoring four minutes later.

Good lead-up work by Langi and Houma led to a try to winger Brett Lane, which with Rhyse Martin’s conversion, had the Jets back in contention at 24-16.

That was as close as they got. A series of poor options by the Jets in the back end of several sets of possessions cost them dearly and two more converted tries to the Sharks produced the emphatic 36-16 final score.

There was no lack of effort in Newtown’s performance though and they stayed right in the contest with the Sharks for most of the second half.

Tongan international Samisoni Langi had one of his best games of the season as he tried hard to spark the Newtown attack. Saulala Houma made an impressive return from injury and David Harris took on the bigger Sharks forwards with typical energy.

The Newtown Jets travel west to take on the competition leaders Penrith at Sportingbet Stadium this Saturday, July 12 at 3pm.
