t’s been a long battle for Stanmore mum Joanne Nicholls, who has struggled for years with cancer.

In 2005 Joanne was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery to remove the cancer, as well as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

In 2008 she had reconstructive surgery as well as preventative surgery to remove her ovaries.

In 2009 the cancer came back, this time in her bones. She then went onto oral chemotherapy which enabled her to live another four years,

He’s off to Indonesia a week after snatching the top job back.

He’s got a huge agenda – but we seem only to be concerned about the issue of asylum seekers.

Granted, It’s a win or lose election issue – and dominates the domestic agenda.

Kevin Rudd hasn’t managed your expectations, but let me try.

There will be some kind of tangible announcement to come out of these diplomatic talks – but do not expect any major breakthrough.

The problem is bigger than an overnight solution and it’s not just a political one.

Indonesia sees it, largely, as Australia’s problem.

It’s a country of 240 million people – more than 10 per cent or around 30 million people live below the poverty line, but there’s also a growing middle class. Culturally and economically Indonesia is facing some vast historical changes - you can forgive them not cracking down on asylum seekers transiting through as a top priority.

Indonesia does need to be a part of any kind of regional solution – but Australia is not exactly offering a huge carrot. We can give them patrol boats and money to bolster their own boarder protection.

But, forgive me for being a little cynical, in a country where corruption

Call him what you will, he’s back, with “Deputy Prime Minister Albo”, as Mr Rudd labelled him, in tow. So here’s the wrap on the bits I found most interesting.

Kate Lundy dumped from Sport: Back in February when Kate Lundy fronted “that” press conference, she must have thought she was kicking off a tenure as saviour of modern Australian sport.

Truth is, she presided over an absolute debacle.

Personally I thought Mr Rudd dumping her from the Sports portfolio was evidence that he thought the whole drugs in sport issue was poorly handled and a blight on the Gillard Government.

For me, it’s all a bit “I’ve got a secret, na, na, na, na, na, na,” from Mr Rudd.

In other words, childish. Given the enormous decision Mr Rudd took to overthrow a Prime Minister, to me, it seems only right that he then heads straight to the polls.

Sexism: I really do shake my head at this ongoing focus on sexism. What I don’t understand is how Mr Rudd in a press conference on Monday, says, “I actually don’t see things through the prism of gender. I never have and I never will”, but preceded that by proudly pointing out that it was he who went to an election with Australia’s fi rst woman as Deputy Prime Minister; and he who recommended the fi rst woman as Governor-General of Australia.

Indonesia have strong reservations about this – The Indonesia ambassador has made it patently clear.

‘Turn back the boats’ is a slogan that works a treat on talk back radio – it doesn’t work so well of the diplomatic circuit.

The Indonesia President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono – has always been sympathetic to Australia’s political problems in this area – he’s moved to stave off any tensions between the two nations. But his time will soon be up – he’s served two 5 year terms and the next presidential election is fast approaching – next year in fact.

The two front runners to take over from the affectionately known SBY – are Nationalists and don’t share the same compassion and sensitivity as their predecessor.

public demonstration will be held tomorrow at the Alex Trevallion Plaza, beside the Post Café in Marrickville from 10am to protest against taxpayers’ money going toward military spending.

The Marrickville Peace Group together with the Australian Anti-bases Campaign Coalition want the public to place $100 bills across a replica Jet Fighter and Submarine which symbolically gestures that the spending is needless and could be used in other areas such as child and aged care services.

Protest organiser Nick Deane said they are hoping for a large turn-out so that politicians can get the message that spending Australian taxpayers’ money on military is wasteful.

“According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute around $250 is spent on armaments each year for every living human being on the planet. Australia roughly spends four times the global average.”

He stated people would rather see more teachers in schools than to purchase another submarine and said the money that goes towards a Joint Strike Fighter should be put into aged care.

Driver changes Roads Minister Duncan Gay has announced that from this week young drivers can start signing up for the Safer Drivers Course, following the appointment of course providers.

Mr Gay also launched the curriculum, which was developed by a board of independent road safety experts.

“We know that the most dangerous time for a young driver is the six months after they begin driving independently on their P-Plates,” Minister Gay said.

“The Safer Drivers Course has been designed to address the road safety risks that drivers under 25 face at this time.”

Learner drivers can now also travel up to 90 kilometres per hour.

New reforms Minister for Women Pru Goward was joined recently by Minister for Health Jillian Skinner to announce the NSW Government’s new reforms to improve the response to domestic and family violence.

“Domestic and family violence affects far too many people in our community.

Police recorded more than 30,000 domestic and family violence assaults in NSW between September 2011 and September 2012,” Ms Goward said.

The reforms include investment in three major violence prevention studies worth $620,000 and the development of a new men’s telephone counselling and referral service to provide assistance to men who are violent.

rime Minister Kevin Rudd took to Newcastle on Monday to introduce his new cabinet, which included Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese as Deputy Prime Minister.

Mr Rudd gave a comprehensive account of the areas of focus for the Government leading into the next election.

There were three new ministers announced into the new Ministry, in addition to 10 ten retained from under Julia Gillard’s leadership.

Meanwhile, Mr Albanese maintained the portfolios of transport, and infrastructure and has also picked up the communications portfolio.

Mr Rudd paid tribute to Mr Albanese for his dedication to the Labor party and rewarded him for sticking solid to the Labor cause.

“Th is is a large set of responsibilities for a man with a prodigious work ethic and a heart for all Australia. He will do the job well. He will help keep the nation’s arteries going,” Mr Rudd said.

He placed emphasis on the importance of having transport services that would serve the nation well into the future.

“Without properly functioning national infrastructure, the roads, rails and ports which have served us well in the past... we must continue to invest in the future,” he said.

MP says charge is unfair on vulnerable locals BASIL NAIMET

ember for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt fi red a broadside at the O’Farrell Government claiming disadvantaged groups will be squeezed out of the Inner West because of the introduction of a bedroom tax.

Single pensioners in government housing will be hit with an additional $20 per week ($1,040 per year) and $30 per week (1,560 per year) for couple households if there are vacant bedrooms in their households.

“The Government is holding this new tax over the most vulnerable members of the community – including our elderly and frail, war widows, indigenous people and those with disabilities,” Ms Tebbutt said.

But the government said the levy would be introduced to alleviate the waiting list that has families who are desperate to get into housing.

The issue is single people are living in multi bedroom houses that could be better utilised by families.

Family and Community Services Minister Pru Goward said something needed to be done about the number of people living in disproportionate housing.

“There are 17,000 public housing homes in NSW with three or more bedrooms that were occupied by singles and couples. Th is translates to 35,000 vacant bedrooms that could be used to house needy families,” she said.

Placing a new ‘vacant bedroom charge’ on heavily subsidised public housing tenants if they choose to continue to live in a property with a number of vacant bedrooms, is one way of addressing the disproportionate issue.

Car accident: Drunk driver causes collision About 1.30am on Sunday morning, a female driver collided with a parked car along Corrunna Road, Stanmore near the intersection of Percival Road. Police attended to investigate the collision and subjected the driver to a roadside breath test. As a result the driver returned a positive reading. Subsequently the driver was arrested and conveyed to Newtown Police Station for the purpose of a breath analysis. The driver returned a high range reading. Car flipped: Police investigate serious crash Police are investigating a motor vehicle crash in Marrickville last Saturday. About 2.20am, a Hyundai sedan was travelling east on Sydenham Road, Marrickville. The vehicle crossed lanes of traffic before mounting the footpath and leaving the roadway. It hit a power pole causing extensive damage, before crashing into a parked Toyota Corolla, pushing it into westbound lanes. The Hyundai then continued east, hitting a tree before fl ipping onto its passenger side and crashing into a brick fence. The 27-year-old female driver got out of the car and was assisted by residents.

Houses going under the hammer are selling for more thanks to gentrification BASIL NAIMET

ome buyers are flocking to ‘snap up’ homes in the Inner West once considered unfashionable.

Suburbs such as Tempe and St Peters that have considerable aircraft noise levels have increased in price in the last 12 months and will rise by five to 10 per cent within the next 12 months according to a property expert.

Senior economist with Australian Property Monitors Andrew Wilson said the increase in prices came down to price momentum.

“As prices start to rise in the inner city areas, people start to make the move outwards,” he said.

Suburbs like St Peters, Sydenham and Tempe are back on the radar because of the upward price pressure on houses closer to the city. Marrickville house prices were up three per cent in the last 6 months. Auction sales were solid last weekend with clearance rates of 90 per cent.

Mr Wilson said transport and ongoing gentrification of these suburbs made it appealing to those with families.

“A lot of fi rst home buyers and business couples were coming into these suburbs because they want to stay close to the city,” he said.

The NSW Opposition has welcomed the Rudd Government’s decision to contribute an additional $300,000 a year to the NSW Environmental Defenders’ Office.

Shadow Environment Minister Luke Foley said the funding was a lifeline for the Office after Barry O’Farrell slashed its core annual funding by $400,000.

“I am relieved that Attorney General Mark Dreyfus has intervened to save NSW from one of Barry O’Farrell’s most shameful cuts,” Mr Foley said.

“The Environmental Defenders’ Office is a vital resource for concerned citizens seeking advice about rampaging local developments – and contemplating actions against commercial interests with deep pockets.

“In recent years, the Office has served as a check on the green-lighting of coal seam gas mining across huge swathes of NSW. “Its dedicated staff carry out vital research and policy development functions, and raise community awareness of our environmental laws.

“Successive NSW Governments respected the role of the Environmental Defenders’ Office – and backed it with the resources to do its work.

“That was until Mr O’Farrell came along.

“When the O’Farrell Government slashed funding for the Environmental Defenders’ Office earlier this year, it claimed it was redirecting money for environmental cases to Legal Aid. “Yet just this week, the Government has abolished Legal Aid support for public interest environmental cases – such as logging, mining and pollution breaches.

“Under Mr O’Farrell, the pendulum has swung too far in favour of Goliath over David. Th is is a Government that has tilted the playing field towards big industry in its environmental skirmishes with local communities.

“Th is announcement will go some way towards restoring the integrity of our State’s environmental protections – it’s a win for citizens and nature against the power of money and influence.”

Iconic pub saved from closure The Henson Hotel is open for business again after three months of renovations BASIL NAIMET

T

ransformation of the Henson Hotel has meant more than just the aesthetics – it’s the dawn of a new era.

Owner Ray Reilly said the pub was very close to being shut down if he hadn’t stepped in to buy it at the last minute and give it a new lease on life, so to speak.

“It was up for sale last September and I bought it in December. It underwent renovations for three months and only opened in early June,” he said.

The pub is an icon and the place is kept active with a variety of people stepping through its doors, however Mr Reilly said he has targeted the renovations around creating a more family friendly environment.

But the purchase of the property wasn’t just a business move, it was also to maintain an icon in the Marrickville area.

Mr Reilly can’t believe the response from the community.

“I have people who come up to me in the streets and shake my hand thanking me for buying and resurrecting the hotel,” he said.

“People hug me and say thanks for keeping this hotel. We saw a vision for the hotel and decided to purchase the property.”

“We don’t see the need for pokies in the hotel. We have a place where there are machines of a different kind, pinball

machines,” he said.

“We want to make this a family hotel.

We have a garage out the back that we’ve converted into a children’s play area where

parents can supervise their children.

“We’re a family friendly pub.”

And being a family pub means pumping out the grub.

“We do 3,000 meals a week for lunch and dinner, and we’ve been selling up to 30 kegs a week,” Mr Reilly explained.

“And it’s getting busier.”

hey’ve got a new boss and a new name, but Sydney’s trains still had the same old problems this week. CityRail and RailCorp have been confi ned to history, with Sydney Trains now the official operator of the rail network.

As part of a host of changes including the introduction of new CEO Howard Collins, the State Government is promising cleaner and more modern trains, customer-focused staff, better

timetabling information and ticketing, improved maintenance and swifter incident management.

Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian is promising that real change is underway, not simply clever PR or marketing tactics.

“Sydney Trains is not RailCorp in disguise – there is so much work we have done that will give our customers faith that there is a bright future for rail services in Sydney,” she said.

The new management team’s fi rst priority will be the introduction of a new timetable in October.

Sydney Trapeze School’s directors are twin trapeze artists, Frank and Robert Taylor, who opened Sydney Trapeze School in 2008. Both Frank and Rob started their love for the Flying Trapeze over 15 years ago, working in the United States and resorts all over the world, such

as New Caledonia, Bali, Singapore and Turkey. After years of setting up successful schools across the globe, they joined together to set up one of their own closer to home.

“We wanted to bring our business to Australia to showcase here what we taught people around the world,” Frank said.

The Trapeze School is getting popular as the years go by.

“We have over 4,000 students, but would like to get more people involved.”

The Trapeze School is not just popular

“Corporate people love this type of activity because it’s different. We run a summer program at Centennial Park from November until April every year. These are popular because of the warmer summer days and daylight savings.”

We always want the best to keep our children healthy. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as vitamin ABC! In the USA recently, a top selling brand of kids’ vitamin was exposed for containing unhealthy additives and fi llers in the tablets. Ingredients such as Aspartame, Sorbitol, and artificial colouring agents were included in the tablets. Th is sent shockwaves amongst the parents.

Vitamin tablets for children are especially popular during the flu season.

So how well do our Australian brands rate?

Th ree popular brands for kids are available in supermarkets. ‘Natures Way Multi Vitamin Vita Balls’ are a popular pick for its Omega 3 fish oil content.

Included in the many ingredients are sorbitol and mannitol.

Health journals have reported that sorbitol has been associated with abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea, whereas mannitol has been known to cause anaphylaxis-like reactions such as blurred vision, dizziness and chest pain.

‘Pentavite Gummies C+Multi’ has a comprehensive list of multivitamins but also includes additives such as maltodextrin, anti-caking agent, and colours sunset yellow and brilliant blue.

Maltodextrin is an artificial sweetener and can be problematic for people with

asthma, eczema, or coeliac disease.

Anti-caking agent is a fi ller and is added during the mixing process. Dieticians believe is has no nutritional value.

There have been some reports in Norway that colouring sunset yellow (E110) causes a long list of health and behavioural problems in children, so the Norwegian government simply banned it.

Meanwhile Brilliant Blue (E102) is not recommended for children by health researchers and has been banned in 11 European countries.

Are there any beneficial alternatives on the shelves we can use for boosting the immunity of our children without causing harm?

The good news is yes, and there is one brand that is a familiar favourite.

After reviewing 40 papers published between 2006 and 2010, researchers found that exercise reduces the risk of a at least two dozen health conditions, ranging from cancer and heart disease to type 2 diabetes, stroke, dementia and depression.

Exercise also slows down the rate of aging itself, providing perhaps the closest example of a real life fountain of youth as we will ever fi nd.

Exercise is about so much more than just weight loss.

As telomeres shorten more, cell death occurs. These cell deaths are associated with serious disease and premature aging.

The leading anti-aging research is on how to prevent telomere shortening and develop therapies to lengthen telomeres, as many experts believe that lengthening telomeres could actually turn the biological clock backward.

Well, exercise has been associated with preventing telomere shortening, so it is clearly a very powerful antiaging strategy.

Research indicates physically active people have significantly less erosion of telomeres than even healthy, nonsmoking but sedentary people.

Exercise activates the enzyme telomerase, which stabilises telomeres, producing an anti-aging effect at the cellular level.

So its not a question of, “what can exercise do for you?” The real question is “What can’t it do?”

SINGING FOR A CAUSE: FUNDS WILL GO TO COOKS RIVER I

f you fancy yourself as an opera singer, or you just love to sing in general, why not come along and watch the Bridge on the River Choir on Wednesday, September 4 at 7.30pm at the Marrickville Golf Club.

Musical Director Gary Smith said the funds raised from the performance would go towards the initiatives of the Cooks River Valley Association to maintain the general upkeep of the Cooks River.

“The residents pull together for the gentrification of the Cooks River. We want to raise funds that will benefit the area in three ways,” he said.

Firstly we want to restore the vegetation of the banks of the river.

Secondly, fund the cleaning of the river from storm waste that makes its way to the drains. And thirdly we want to put in a long term restoration plan for the river to allow continued recreational activities such as swimming.”

In addition to the River on the Choir performance Anna Salleh, an established Jazz and Brazilian music singer, will perform, as will members of The Cleftomaniacs community choir.

Mr Smith said people who want to sing in the choir or just watch the performance are more than welcome.

“We’re always looking for new members. There’s no audition or requirement to read music, just a love of singing,” he said.

lternative rockers Cloud Control are going to be heading out on a massive national tour of Australia throughout August and September.

The acclaimed band will be touring in support of their forthcoming sophomore album ‘Dream Cave’.

They will stop at a number of venues on their two month tour, with Sydneysiders able to catch their gig at The Metro on Thursday, September 12.

After they received overwhelmingly positive reviews for their recent sold out performance at Sydney’s Vivid Festival, Cloud Control will be returning to their home country where they will wow audiences with new tracks from their latest album.

Fans of the talented band will also get to hear all their old favourite songs from Cloud Control’s popular debut album ‘Bliss Release’.

e was one of my favourite characters growing up, now Australian TV icon Humphrey B. Bear is back on our screens via community TV channel TVS. “Humph” can now be seen every night at 7.30pm on TVS saying goodnight to kids. It’s been four years since Humphrey was last seen on TV after his owners went bankrupt. Now to bring back Fat Cat and Mr Squiggle and all will be good in the world!

Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting is finally retiring from all forms of cricket in October but he won’t be lost to the game because he’s just signed on as a commentator for the Big Bash League on Channel Ten. Ponting is one of the game’s all-time greats, so there’s no doubt he’ll do a fine job behind the mic.

In a somewhat strange move, Channel Ten has announced News Limited columnist Joe Hildebrand as their latest

host of their upcoming morning show.

Hildebrand will join the already named Ita Buttrose. Now that’s one random line-up I am curious to see!

The new series hosted by Shane Jacobson will air at 8pm on Tuesday, July 9. 10 top home baking enthusiasts will be put through a series of grueling weekly elimination challenges, baking a mouth-watering selection of cakes, pies, tarts, pastries, bread, biscuits and desserts, in the hope of being crowned Australia’s Best Home Baker. I must admit I do like the sound of this, well done for trying something at least slightly different in the amateur coocking genre!

Stellar performance from Henare Wells not enough to spare Jets from defeat

T

he Newtown Jets met a determined Mounties side last Saturday at Mounties Sports Ground defeating the Jets by 34-16.

Newtown kept Mounties at bay in the fi rst quarter of the game but had to wait until the 21st minute of the match when skilful fullback Henare Wells scored with the conversion successful to take the lead 6-0.

The Jets extended their lead in the 35th minute to 10-0, however in the space of 5 minutes the home side scored two tries to draw the match at half time.

In the opening five minutes of the second half Mounties scored two quick tries to take the lead 20-10.

Mounties continued their domination with 95 per cent of possession and with a run of penalties and a strong kicking game they ran over the top of the Jets to take a commanding 30-10 lead with 20 minutes to play.

The Jets through a long distance effort

by Henare Wells scored again, however the dominance of play from the home side meant they turned a galvanised effort into a solid score line with a try in the 75th minute taking the fi nal score to 34-16.

In a positive for the Jets Kurt Kara was again one of their best players defending strongly in the difficult playing conditions.

Ray Moujalli, Brad Barrett and Josh Ailaomai all battled strongly also.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Family Day 2 at Henson Park tomorrow when the Jets host Wentworthville in the main game at 3pm.

In the curtain raiser the Cronulla Sharks take on the Windsor Wolves at 1pm.

ith game three of State of Origin to be played in Sydney in under a fortnight, one woman from the Inner West who plays both rugby league and touch football is breaking all the stereotypes.

Maddison Studdon enjoys playing rugby league for the Helensburgh Tigers at half-back, and also plays touch football.

The 18-year-old Tempe woman started playing touch at the age of 10 and quickly advanced to play State Cup at the age of 12, with women six years her senior in the U18’s.

“I was nervous playing with the older women, but they were terrific, they gave me a lot of encouragement and guidance,” Ms Studdon said.

In 2010 Maddy was playing for the Australian women’s U18 side at the age of 15.

And getting into the squad wasn’t an easy feat as selectors choose women and girls from across Australia.

“You play in a number of competitions such as the State Cup, the National Tournaments and you get chosen from these tournaments. The selectors choose players from every State and Territory,” she said.

“They’re quick, smart and experienced.”

Having played State of Origin for New South Wales and beaten the Queenslanders 3-0 in 2012, she is hoping the men can come up with the series in game three.

Maddison’s aspirations are to play in the Touch World Cup, which will be held in 2014 at a venue to be announced.
