ember for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt has criticised the State Government for its tardiness installing flashing lights in school zones. Ms Tebbutt said the Government promised to have the lights installed at all 3,150 NSW schools by December 31, 2015. However as of March 13, 2014, the Centre for Road Safety reported that only 1,350 schools now had flashing lights near an entrance with more than 1,760 schools still awaiting installation. “In NSW, we know speeding is a factor in about 40 per cent of road deaths, and for pedestrians the risk is even greater,” Ms Tebbutt said. “I support flashing lights as they are an effective way to reduce car speeds and they are proven to reduce the risk of injury to children.” She was particularly concerned that the delay in the rollout would have an impact on local schools like Marrickville Public School, where parents have been advocating for stronger road safety measures for more than two years. “Despite questions to the Minister in Parliament, the Baird Government have still refused to confirm when Marrickville Public School will receive their flashing lights,” she said. Minister for Roads Duncan Gay defended the Government’s record in the area, saying they were on track for completion by the end of next year. “[We have] rolled out school flashing lights at more than three times the rate of the former Labor Government,” Minister Gay said.
