hen Stanmore bus driver Jeff Turner lost his wife Gayle to cancer in 2005, he vowed to do something positive in her honour to help conquer cancer in all its forms. He’d met Ms Turner-Edwards in 2002 after their online dating profi les matched on RSVP, but two weeks after their fi rst date, Jeff realised Gayle was constantly in pain and suffering from cancer. “I basically marched her off to the doctor,” Mr Turner said. “After a couple more weeks, she started to lose control of her right side, which started to happen quite quickly.” Determined to stay together, the pair married in August 2004 but just shy of their 12-month anniversary, in August 2005, Gayle lost her fight. After Gayle passed, Mr Turner, 59, heard of the mission of brain surgeon Professor Chris O’Brien, who was battling a brain tumour himself, and his dream in his fi nal years to establish a world-class Lifehouse cancer centre for Sydney’s cancer sufferers, their families and their carers. From October 13-14, Mr Turner put his foot to the pedal and cycled with 1,623 other participants who have been touched by cancer a total of 200km from Homebush to Camden and back again for the inaugural Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer. Funds raised from the 200km ride will be used towards the construction and operating costs for Camperdown’s Lifehouse Sydney Cancer Centre. Mr Turner said he raised more than $3,000 on the day as an individual, with the total raised across the two-day event counted at $5.7 million. “Apparently it’s an Australian record for a single event for a single charity.” He said the centre would encompass everything under one roof, including world class and cutting edge research and care, training programs for doctors on how to pass on news about terminal cancer to patients with sensitivity, counseling for carers of people with cancer and information about alternative therapies. “People who have suffered cancer wore yellow flags, so they either have it, had it or they’re in

SPIDER SEASON As the weather warms up and we spend more time in the garden, residents are being warned to brush up on their fi rst aid. Spider bites are more common in summer and knowing how to deal with a spider bite in an emergency can make all the difference. Just last week a boy was treated for a red back spider bite.
