M

arrickville will come alive on Sunday, October 20 for the annual Marrickville Festival which promises to have the best line-up yet.

With much anticipation, this year’s event will get underway at 10am.

The entertainment will be sure to get you tapping your toes with performances from local talent, up and coming bands, right through to community groups. There will be over 36 performances across five stages, as well as diverse attractions and activities including bicycle workshops, blacksmith demonstrations, recycling games and the very best local foods and handmade products.

Large numbers are expected to attend, with previous years attracting up to 50,000 people and nothing suggesting those numbers will diminish.

Mayor Jo Haylen said the event is the highlight of the year for the Marrickville area.

“It’s such a great day out for everyone and anyone who wants to experience all the best that Marrickville has to offer. It’s the perfect place to experience our collective culture,” she said.

his year’s Marrickville Festival will feature local artists who will be vying for the chance to make an impression on music industry leaders.

Musicians will not only perform in front of industry leading judges, but they’ll also have the chance to win a contract whilst also gaining experience playing in front of large crowds at the festival – expected to attract an audience in the thousands.

Last year’s winners were The Ukes Of Today who have gone on to perform many professional gigs over the last nine months.

They’ve played gigs at Addison Road Markets, the Opera House, Newtown Festival and the National Folk Festival in Canberra.

Their success at Marrickville Festival has meant they secured their first album ‘Colourblind’ which was recorded as part of the prize. They’ve already released the album.

Marrickville gets behind its X-Treme Team in Australia’s Got Talent finals

hey’re young, fit, and oozing talent and on Sunday night these inner west athletes will go against the best Australia has to offer in the semi finals of the cult show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ on Channel 9.

Known as The X-Treme Team they are the only martial arts club to make it to the semi finals of the show this year.

What is unique about them is they combine martial arts with ‘tricking’ skills to entertain the audience.

Forming part of the Australian Martial Arts academy, the X-Treme Team have travelled around Australia and the world enthralling audiences with their choreography, acrobatics and weapons handling.

The movements are precise and mesmerising with actions that add an element of danger.

The X-Treme Team will enthral audiences this Sunday.

Those taking part on Sunday night are from Marrickville and Auburn academies with ages ranging from 13 to 25 with experience in martial arts from seven to 22 years. The oldest is 25-year-old world champion and head instructor Hakan Manav who will perform with the group.

Mr Manav said he was excited to have performed on television showcasing what the group can do and hoped to go all the way on the show. “Performing on the AGT stage was an unforgettable experience for the team.

The response we got from the judges, the live audience and everyone at the academy was amazing,� he said. “We are very grateful to have made it to the semis of the competition. The team have been working very hard to put on a bigger and better performance. We can’t wait for Sunday!�

All of the inner west will be watching with bated breath when the X-Treme Team performs in the semi finals of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ airing on the Nine Network on Sunday night at 6.30pm.

WorkCover NSW is reminding kitchen, wall frame and roof truss manufacturers of the importance of working safely with powered hand tools after more than 100 workers were injured in the industry over three years.

The reminder comes after the wood products manufacturing industry was identified as one of the state’s highest risk industries with 1,965 workers compensation claims in the three years to 2010 at a cost of $19.5 million to the New South Wales workers compensation scheme.

Call for locals to ‘get on your soap box’ during annual Anti Poverty Week

ext week is Anti Poverty Week and the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre wants you to ‘Get on your soap box’ on Friday, October 17.

In Australia it was established as an expansion of the UN’s annual International Anti-Poverty Day. Anti Poverty Week encourages Australians to take part in an activity aimed at highlighting issues around poverty and hardship in Australia and overseas.

This year, Anti Poverty Week will be held from October 13 – 19.

The Newtown Neighbourhood Centre would like to invite members of the community to show up and speak publicly about poverty at their sop box event.

The event will get under way from 12.30pm and conclude at 2pm. At 1pm

a ‘Flash Dance’ will be organised with a free BBQ throughout the event.

As well as members of the public voicing their opinions, other speakers will be sharing up-to-date facts and information on poverty and will recount their personal experiences with poverty.

“The problem with poverty is that it is invisible. The soap box will give people a chance to offer up ideas on how to overcome it. There are solutions and we’re wanting ideas from individuals and community alike,” said Ken Saunders of NNC. For those who don’t consider themselves public speakers, there will be an opinion/story board where opinions will be posted.

You may even have your opinions published in the centre’s newsletter, on their website and social media sites.

Anti Poverty Week coincides with Mental Health month, which gives members of the public a chance to learn more about mental health issues, and take part in wellbeing activities such as yoga.

International Fleet Review attracts the crowds, but "serious side" was lost On public holiday Monday the Marrickville Peace Group demonstrated against the Sea Power Conference and Exposition, suggesting that business dealings were being made behind closed doors that were in stark contrast with the purpose of the International Fleet Review.

Group organiser Nick Deane said their demonstration was designed to make people aware of why the conference was taking place.

“The Sea Power Conference and Exposition is about the undue influence that large corporations have over American military strategy,” he said.

He said although there was much coverage in the media about the fleet review and the interest it would generate for the public there was a serious side to it that the public needed to know.

“There is a contrast to what is being held over the next week with the international fleet review and what is happening behind closed doors,” he said.

“This is the serious side of the military which is the dealing of arms between corporations and governments.”

Mr Deane said there was a lot of interest from an inquisitive public, who came along and supported the group in their demonstration on Monday.

he International Fleet Review held last weekend was a sight to behold for most Sydneysiders, who witnessed a series of local and international ships from the Australian and International navies arrive in Sydney Harbour to mark the centenary of Australia's Navy.

On October 9, 20 Royal Australian Navy and foreign warships as well as 10 military aircraft spearheaded the procession, which celebrated the arrival of the first RAN Fleet of HMA Ships Australia, Sydney, Melbourne, Encounter, Warrego, Parramatta and Yarra exactly 100 years ago.

However an event that was taking place behind closed doors at Darling Harbour that didn’t draw anywhere near as much media attention was a demonstration by a group of 30 from Marrickville.

Pizza delivery man robbed in Porter Avenue, Marrickville

Police put the heat on firebugs as temperatures rise

About 9.30pm on Monday night a pizza delivery rider was robbed when he attended Porter Ave, Marrickville. The victim entered the street and was waved down by two males standing at the front of a house.

The victim has stopped, as this was outside the location he was attending to drop off the pizzas. Whilst the driver was reading out the order he was grabbed from behind by one of the males. The second male has then rummaged through the victim’s pockets and taken a sum of money and a mobile phone. Both males were last seen running in the direction of Marrickville Park. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Marrickville Police on 9568 9299.

The NSW Police Force, Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW are reminding the community they can put the heat on firebugs by reporting any suspicious activity they see.

“The outcomes of bushfires can be catastrophic, and reports of deliberately-lit bushfires are treated extremely seriously,” Assistant Commissioner Alan Clarke said.

“We use both overt and covert strategies to detect bushfire arsonists, and anyone caught deliberately lighting of bushfires will be arrested and put before the court where they could face penalties of up to 25 years’ imprisonment.”

Strike Force Tronto, comprised of detectives from the Property Crime Squad’s Arson Unit, is the lead investigative body.

Police conduct effective safety operation

Sometime between 2.30pm and 4pm on Sunday, October 6, unknown person/s have entered a premises located on Pine Street in Marrickville.

Once inside they have taken an Apple Mac book computer and other items of property including a passport.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Marrickville Local Area Command on 9568 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are reminding residents to lock their doors and windows and to keep valuables out of sight such as watches and computers. All suspicious activity should be reported.

Operation Slow Down started at 12am on Friday, October 4, and concluded at 11.59pm on Monday, October 7. Double demerits were in force over this entire period for speeding, seat-belt and motorcycle-helmet offences.

Nine road fatalities were recorded during this annual statewide high-visibility traffic-enforcement operation, five more than the Labour Day long weekend 2012.

Police performed a total of 180,716 breath tests over the long weekend and charged 269 people with drink-driving offences. This is significantly less than last year’s 425 offences but there was an increase in speeding offences.

he fate of the Newtown Markets will be decided when Marrickville Council holds a vote on Tuesday night on an appeal to keep the markets open.

Greens Councillor Sylvie Ellsmore who has been an advocate for the facility to stay open said she hoped the Council could make a decision that would give certainty to the business district that surrounded the markets.

“I’ve been swamped by local businesses and residents alike who love Newtown’s markets and are keen to see them stay,” she said.

Cr Ellsmore said the markets were an opportunity for stallholders to flourish and expand into a local commercial establishment. Kate Jones is someone whose business has gone commercial.

Having started at Newtown Markets in July 2012, Kate flourished within six months. She established her own wholesale business called The Vegan Tea House that has grown exponentially.

he public housing waiting list for NSW has grown to more than 57,000 with a waiting time for a property of 10 years according to Shadow Minister for Housing Sophie Cotsis.

Ms Cotsis said some 38 percent of western Sydney areas have seen an increase in more than five years in the amount of time an applicant is housed.

The issue was compounded by the $22 million cut from the construction budget for new housing according to the Shadow Minister.

“The explosion in the public housing waiting list is a direct result of the O’Farrell Government’s cuts and its failure to meet the demand for new housing stock. After nearly three years of inaction form Barry O’Farrell, it is completely unacceptable that in many parts of Sydney, waiting times for housing have blown out to 10 years,” Ms Cotsis said.

Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt said the lack of housing for the Marrickville area was reaching unsustainable proportions.

“Official statistics show the expected waiting time for approved public housing applicants in the Marrickville and Inner West areas is more than 10 years, which is the longest possible waiting

time band (10+ years). These are some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the community.

Ms Tebbutt said she had been approached by many local residents who needed urgent housing.

“Without safe and secure housing, lives are put on hold, families struggle day to day and physical and mental health conditions are left to deteriorate,” she said.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Family and Community services said a recent report by the NSW Auditor General revealed the NSW public housing system was not sustainable.

“We inherited a broken system from NSW Labor and their revolving door of failed housing ministers.”

The spokesperson said under the Coalition Government the public housing system was being managed effectively, properly and professionally.

However Ms Tebbutt said feedback from her electorate told a different story.

“Urgent repairs are not being done and residents are telling me they can no longer even speak to maintenance teams to request work or find out when work may be carried out,” she said.

She said the maintenance backlog meant people had many repairs that needed attending to as well.

It’s bright, it’s feisty and it is so in season; citrus is the season’s new black. That’s right I am talking about the vibrant tangerines, zesty lemons and in-your-face limes that women everywhere are soon to be wearing through this season and into the next.

Why the sudden outburst of the bright citrus colours? I have no idea but it sure is refreshing after the dark tones and deep colours that we were wearing all winter.

Unlike the neon colours that citrus is so often confused with, although this season’s colours are bright, they are much softer to the eye.

Citrus colours are not everyone’s best friend as they can clash with particular skin and hair tones but with the right styling, citrus can fit into anyone’s wardrobe. Nude tones go hand-in-hand with citrus clothing, especially when worn with tangerine.

A pair of nude heels with a hot orange dress and a nude bag will look great for a night out but if you want to keep it casual, stick to the flats. If you want a more sophisticated look, team a lemon or lime dress with bold, black accessories and for a fresh, crisp look, maybe for an event by the sea, wear white accessories.

In short, the basic colours, nude, black, white and sometimes brown are the best colours to match with a citrus outfit. Making the change from your usual go-to colours to the bright and stand-out citrus colours can be a little daunting so why not try starting small.

Not only are the stores full of citrus coloured clothing, they are full of the bright coloured accessories as well so it is easy to begin incorporating tangerine or lemon into your daily wear.

In saying this, don’t overkill it with the accessories; citrus nail polish is a definite YES but don’t even think about citrus lipstick, eye shadow or liner.

I see a lot of pleas to support such-andsuch-fighting-sickness charity and it seems like every product has a pink “supporting breast cancer” promotion.

This includes at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week.

A study published last week also found that postmenopausal women who walk for an hour a day can cut their chance of breast cancer by 14 per cent. So the next time you have some spare change, maybe a gym membership might do more benefit than a telemarketing charity donation.

Not everyone wants to or even needs to stick to a very strict training program. I’ll share some insights from T-nation a site anyone who builds any type of muscle will be aware of.

The topic of “cheat days” or “free days” is big in the nutrition world, and people swear by them for both psychological and physiological reasons.

I prefer to be a little more fluid with my eating. I eat well the vast majority of the time and only keep good food on hand, but when I go out with friends I’ll let loose a bit (sometimes more than a bit), regardless of what day it is. It’s a similar concept to a ‘cheat day’, just less rigid. You might have heard of it as 80/20 rule.

I do love to employ a “free day” in my training program though, which functions essentially the same as a dietary cheat day.

On the last day of the training week I go in and do whatever I feel like doing at that particular moment. Just about anything is fair game, so long as it’s not reckless and it doesn’t interfere with subsequent training sessions.

My rationale for the free day is mostly psychological. I think that to make progress in the gym it’s important to stick to a logical plan, but once you’ve been training hard for a while you can start to get bored or stale, especially when you aren’t competing in anything or training for something in specific and instead are mostly training just for the love of it.

Maybe you do your regularly scheduled workouts Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and follow it up with a free day on the weekend, or maybe you lift Monday-Friday with Friday being the free day. The setup isn’t too important, just make it the last training day of the week.

To liken it to food, the idea is that you’re making sure to eat all your healthy food first and then following it up with dessert, so to speak.

If you’re training for a specific goal or competition, then free days may not fit into the equation, but if you train with more general goals in mind, it can be a great approach.

Take a walk down memory lane in alternative Newtown

E

ver wondered what Newtown looked like in by-gone eras?

Well on Saturday, October 19 you can step back in time to the unique 1990’s and do a walking tour of Newtown for free.

indelible food names will be part of the walking tour of a suburb synonymous with alternative culture.

The walk will be hosted by writer Vanessa Berry, who will take you through a nostalgic tour of the sights and sounds around the turn of the millennium in Newtown.

Ms Berry, whose book Ninety9 is a memoir of a teenager’s life as a music fan living in the 90’s, said she was inspired to do the tour whilst writing her book and reflecting on living in Newtown.

“Newtown was an important place for me as it felt like the centre of the world I so much wanted to be part of. It was a centre of alternative culture in Sydney,” Ms Berry fondly recalled.

She hoped the tour would be a fun journey back in time for people who knew Newtown in the 1990’s.

The three hour tour organised by the City of Sydney will start at Newtown library and move towards Newtown train station, then stop at historic sites like the former Burland Community Hall and late-night

kebab shop King of Yeeros, with stories from the 90’s to accompany each site.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the tour was part of the unique libraries program and was made just for people with an interest in the history of Newtown or for those to reminisce.

“The 1990’s was a memorable time where music, arts, and grassroots youth culture flourished, and Newtown was the heart of the late-night scene,” Ms Moore said.

18 Schneider set to fall

in love with Sydney

O

nce upon a time, Rob Schneider seemed destined to be forever known as Adam Sandler’s sidekick but now the comedian has taken centre stage, directing his own movies and performing stand-up to packed theatres.

While most people are familiar with Schneider’s television and film roles, he actually began his career on the stand-up circuit in San Francisco but took a hiatus from the stage for more than a decade.

He returned to live performance a few years ago, triggered by the boredom he experienced on movie sets and a little encouragement from his good friend and fellow Hollywood star Chris Rock.

“Sitting in my trailer on a movie for three months and eating out of Styrofoam boxes; everybody’s thinking how glamorous it was, but I wanted to do something more fun,” Schneider said of his decision to return to the stage.

Australian fans will get the opportunity to witness Schneider’s routines live when he performs at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday, October 19 as part of the Just for Laughs Festival.

“I feel very honoured to be performing in one of the most iconic theatres in the world, the Sydney Opera House, very excited and honoured and looking forward to being there,” he said.

Despite the fame and success he has achieved with movie-making, Schneider admitted that nothing can beat the buzz of live comedy.

“There’s not a lot of things better than that in life, to make a room of a thousand people laugh really hard, that’s pretty exciting, I recommend it to anybody.”

A class clown during his school years, Schneider turned his antics into a job and eventually reached the mecca of American comedy – Saturday Night Live.

He started as a writer but was quickly promoted to a fully fledged cast member, getting his first taste of the spotlight.

“It was intense because people knew the stakes were very high, if you became successful there you got to make movies – and then you get to go in restaurants and cut in front of people and not have to wait, you get to fly in first class or in private jets and you get to make movies and models want to go out with you,” he joked.

Schneider transitioned to movie making and early in his acting career, famously played quirky, hilarious characters in Adam Sandler films such as ‘The Water-

OCTOBER 19 SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE boy’, ‘Big Daddy’ and ‘Little Nicky’ but the duo have not collaborated much recently.

“I love Adam, I hope our relationship’s not getting stale, that’s why I don’t want to make movies with him for a while… I want to make a movie with him in a couple of years when it’s fresh again,” he explained.

Schneider then took the lead role in comedy hits including ‘Deuce Bigalow’ and ‘The Hot Chick’, which he considers to be near-perfect.

“That’s a good movie, that holds up.

Little girls to this day come up to me and know that movie verbatim, now they’re about 20 but they love that movie, it’s a sweet little movie,” he said.

Despite his commercial success, Schnei-

der became increasingly frustrated with the interference from studios and decided to get behind the camera, releasing his directorial debut ‘Big Stan’ in 2008.

“I got sick and tired of directors who had their own particular egotistical vision of stuff that I wrote and I got sick of working with them and I said, I’m just going to do this on my own,” he said.

Schneider enjoyed his stint as a director so much that he plans to do it again in the future, although in the meantime he has more pressing priorities – his baby daughter Miranda, who will be flying out to Sydney with him this month.

“I’ve lost about 60 per cent of my normal sleep… but she’s the most beautiful thing ever, she’s just gorgeous and sweet.”

The Corey Monteith ‘Glee’ tribute episode will air tonight at 7.30pm on ELEVEN. The episode is simply titled ‘Quarterback’ and celebrates the life of popular character Finn Hudson. Monteith sadly and unexpectedly passed away in July after an overdose on heroin and champagne.

Science fiction lovers rejoice! Foxtel has signed a deal with NBC Universal-owned channel Syfy to launch early next year. Syfy will replace the current SciFi channel, which will cease transmission on December 31. There’s still no word yet on what TV1 will be replaced with.

ewtown Jets forwards Kurt Kara and Nafe Seluini were the major award winners at the club’s Annual Presentation Night, held at the Petersham RSL Club on October 2.

A big crowd was in attendance to review a season where the Jets once again made the NSW Cup semi finals and provided valuable support to their NRL partnership club, the 2013 NRL Premiers, the Sydney Roosters.

Amongst the keynote speakers were the club’s president Barry Vining, and head coach Greg Matterson and the Sydney Roosters Chief Operating Officer Brian Canavan.

Mr Canavan spoke of how successful the long-running partnership between the Jets and Roosters clubs has been, noting that the relationship between the two clubs was in every aspect “the envy of every other NRL club”.

Kurt Kara took out the best and fairest award and Nafe Seluini the prestigious Fred Daly Memorial Shield (which is awarded to the player who has contributed most to the club in several
