The inquest into their deaths, which opened on Monday at the Coroner’s Court in Glebe, heard that the residents died from a range of causes including heart disease, drug toxicity and choking. The inquest will determine whether the care the residents received was suitable for their physical and mental health conditions. Counsel assisting the inquest, Stephen Kelly, said that in a number of cases when a resident needed urgent medical attention, a staff member rang a manager fi rst for advice before ringing for an ambulance. Mr Kelly pointed to the series of investigations by the ombudsman into the standard of care at NSW boarding houses over the past decade, arguing that little has been done to reform legislation in order to protect vulnerable residents. It is estimated that there are around 200 unlicensed boarding houses in the Marrickville local government area, with as many as 2,000 residents. The inquest is expected to conclude today (Friday, March 16). More details in our next issue.

I hate it when people on the dole are labelled bludgers. Th is week for my job I’ve been asking people what they think of members of their community that receive unemployment benefits – and invariably the word ‘bludger’ rears its ugly head. I don’t see how anyone who receives $460 a fortnight in welfare can be considered to be doing it easy. That’s $230 a week – that wouldn’t even cover rent, let alone food, bills, petrol, and the rest. Break it down a little further and it works out to around $23 a day. Th ink about the last round of drinks you bought, or the last take away meal you picked up – fair chance that if you were on the dole, that would be your daily budget blown in one fell swoop. The general notion of disliking people who claim welfare is inexcusable, but the mentality behind it is in some regards understandable – people don’t like

an association with seeing their taxes being handed to people who are fully capable of holding down a full time job. But you only need to watch the news a few nights a week or pick up a newspaper from time to time to realise that there a lot more jobs being lost than created in Australia at the moment. These are tough times – businesses are tightening their belts, and literally thousands of Australians are joining unemployment queues each week. In fact the official unemployment figure now stands at more than 650,000 – and that is just the number who are claiming welfare… there could be plenty more out there who are getting by on money they saved for a rainy day. Each year the government hands out around $7 billion in taxpayer money to the unemployed. But the more important reason we should be trying to get these people jobs is a simple old term called “the dignity of work”.

Far be it from me to get all high and mighty on an issue, but this is one topic that all religions agree on – that it is an all-important part of human existence to have an important role in society, ie: a job. And this is why I don’t think we should be lambasting people who can’t fi nd work. In all my years, I am yet to meet somebody who truly has no desire to work. Sure, some people need a break, some are a bit lazy, but by and large everyone would like to contribute something to society. Subsisting on welfare is not a lifestyle choice, it is not a mindset, it is not a luxury. It is an option that 99.99 per cent of people would more than happily choose to avoid. So next time you’re pondering that person outside Centrelink, think to yourself “would I like to be unemployed?” – chances are your answer is no, and it’s very likely theirs would be the same as well.

Not enough police on the beat Minister blames previous government as shortfall in Local Area Commands becomes a concern BY LOUISE BOURKE

arrickville MP, Carmel Tebbutt, has called on the State Government to boost the number of front line police officers, after it was discovered that the local area is missing 22 police officers. A government document, the Strength Statement for January 2012, reveals a police shortage at all three Local Area Commands. While Marrickville LAC is authorised to have 130 officers and Newtown LAC 128, both currently have 122 officers. Redfern LAC is authorised to have 163 officers and currently has 155. Ms Tebbutt said the government needs to fi ll the missing spots for the safety of inner west residents. “Th is government has been in power for nearly a year, and all we have seen is cuts to services,” Ms Tebbutt said. “Police officers do a tough job in the most difficult circumstances, and the government should recognise that and make sure our local commands are properly staffed, for their own safety and their ability to protect the community.” A spokesperson from the Police Minister’s office said that the government is working to increase police numbers in NSW, with 550 trainee police men and women to go through the system in the next two years. “We’re working hard to clean up the mess of the previous government in terms of police numbers,” the spokesperson said.

Boy, 17, killed at local railway station Police responded to two separate incidents last week, including the death of a teenager at Lewisham Railway Station

wo separate incidents at inner west train stations last week resulted in the death of one man at Lewisham and injury to a city rail worker at Stanmore. Police were called to Lewisham Railway Station just before midnight on Friday after the body of 17-year-old, Jakob Anderson, was found on the tracks.

It is believed Mr Anderson was hanging out of the doors of the train and was killed when he struck the tunnel. It is the same location where 18-year-old graffiti artist, Tre Toman, was killed by a train in January. Superintendent Greg Peters from Marrickville Police said a 15-year-old boy who

was with Mr Anderson has spoken to police. A city rail worker was injured on Thursday evening at Stanmore Station when a glass bottle was thrown at a moving train, causing the window and bottle to shatter. The impact caused fragments of glass to strike the railway employee who was travelling in the train.

The train then stopped at Redfern Station, where police and emergency services were alerted to the incident. The 34-year-old man suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident and was taken to Sydney Hospital for treatment. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

he clean-up after Thursday’s wild weather was swift, with council crews and residents pitching in to restore local streets and parks to normal by Friday morning. Six council crews were dispatched around the area on Thursday to repair the damage, with priority given to flooded Illawarra Road, Steel Park and Henson Park, according to a Marrickville Council spokesperson. The difference between Wharf

Street on Thursday morning, when it had been flooded and closed to vehicles, to Friday morning when the Inner City Weekender visited the site, was stark. The only signs of the previous day’s events were two abandoned cars left on the street with tell-tale water marks, mud and vegetation stuck to the doors. One Wharf Street business owner, whose shop floor was flooded when the Cooks River spilled over Steel Park, was inspecting his damaged car.

“We made sure our stock was alright,” he said. “Before I knew it, I went outside to see the car floating. Not much you could do.” While the Cooks River, which spilled onto roads in Marrickville and Tempe, has receded, it is still choked in parts with debris, rubbish and plastic bottles. Council crews continued the clean-up effort this week and Council has said that any areas still requiring cleaning after this time should be brought to their attention.

A 20-year-old Enmore man has been charged following a serious street-level robbery along King Street, Newtown in the early hours of Tuesday, March 6. The victim was seated at a bus stop outside Newtown Station when the man approached him and demanded his mobile phone. The victim refused and the man proceeded to grab at the victim, causing him to fall on the footpath. The man also punched the victim a number of times before being shouted at by a nearby security guard. Police were flagged down by the security guard and caught up to the man, who attempted to flee. He was swiftly restrained, arrested and conveyed back to Newtown Police Station. The man appeared before Central Local Court on March 15 charged with Aggravated Assault with Intent to Rob and Resist Police Officer. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Tip oﬀ: Man busted for credit card fraud

Police received information that a male, who was wanted by police, was staying at the Rydges Apartments on Missenden Road,

Camperdown, using fraudulent credit cards to pay for the accommodation. About 2pm on Friday, March 9 police attended the units and entered the room where the man was staying. As well as fraudulent documents, a small quantity of drugs was also located inside the room. The 38-year-old Maroubra man was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station. Marrickville Police are urging members of the public to be vigilant when using ATM machines in the Marrickville area. There have been reports that ATMs have been tampered with. The cash dispenser section of the machines does not dispense the correct amount of money. Fancy celebrations Ferncourt Public gets ready to celebrate 90 years of education BY LOUISE BOURKE

erncourt Public School will celebrate its 90th birthday in style next week with students and staff to take part in a fancy dress parade. The school community will parade in 1880’s and 1920’s costumes on Thursday, March 22, to commemorate significant moments in the school’s history, according to

Principal Ruth Turnell. “[They] will dress up as either a child of the 1880’s when ‘Prosna’, the sixbedroom mansion that is now Ferncourt’s administration building was built, or of the 1920’s when Ferncourt Infants School began with just three classes,” Ms Turnell said. The South Marrickville School, located in ‘The Warren’, as locals call it, has a rich history. The site was originally part of the 130-

acre estate of colonial wool merchant and politician, Thomas Holt, which he bought in 1859. The estate was later subdivided and a Polish-born artist, Gracius Broinowski, built a house called Prosna in 1883. The Education Department bought the house in 1922 and the school was soon after established. A birthday cake will be served in the school’s Rose Garden on Thursday.

Bottles dredged up

Residents call for recycling scheme after river is littered following rain BY LOUISE BOURKE

ast Thursday’s wild weather dredged up hundreds of plastic bottles and other debris from the Cooks River, only days after local volunteers collected an estimated 3,540 bottles from Ewen Park and Marrickville Golf Course as part of Clean Up Australia Day. It’s another reason why members of the community are calling for a cash deposit on the return of plastic bottles for recycling. “I don’t know why we can’t have a cash deposit of 10 cents on every soft drink bottle sold in this state,” said John Butcher from the Cooks River Valley Association. The group estimates that if each of the bottles dragged from the river during the clean-up had been cashed in for 10 cents, the community would have $354 to clean the river. A spokesperson for the Environment Minister, Robyn Parker, said the government supports the public consultation process currently underway, which includes a proposal for a container deposit scheme. Local, Kate Maclean, has started her own campaign. For each bottle she collects from the river, a virtual 10 cent ‘refund’ is added to the running tally posted on a sign nearby.

David Stein I have just fi nished a book a nutritionist friend lent me called In defence of food. It’s a great book with some insightful advice on why foods in our diet have more health claims than ever before, but we are sicker than ever. The more new foods science breaks down into marketable components – for example: low cholesterol or hi fibre – the further we get from the big picture of real whole food. It’s crazy but our ancestors in caves had a much better idea of what to eat than we do. I was looking at some more info on Michael Pollen the author and liked his answer to the following, often asked, question. Our family is on a budget and can’t afford to eat all organic. Where should we direct our money to get the most benefit? Organic produce, meats, dairy? “Some organic products offer the consumer more value than others, so if you’re on a budget, it’s important to buy organic strategically. Here are a few quick rules of thumb: If you have young kids, it’s worth paying the organic premium on

whatever they eat or drink the most of organically. So if they drink lots of apple juice – which they shouldn’t, by the way – or milk, then spring for it there. On produce, some items, when grown conventionally, have more pesticide residue than others, so when buying these, it pays to buy organic. According to the Environmental Working Group, the “dirty dozen” most pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables are: apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, imported nectarines, imported grapes, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, blueberries, lettuce and kale/collars. The “clean 15” are onions, sweet corn, pineapples, avocado, asparagus, sweet peas, mangoes, eggplant, cantaloupe, kiwi, cabbage, watermelon, sweet potatoes, grapefruit and mushrooms. So if you’ve only got a little money to devote to organic, buy the organic apples and skip the organic onions. But do keep in mind that it’s important to eat fruits and vegetables regardless of how they’re grown.

In meat, organic is very expensive, and doesn’t necessary ensure that the animals didn’t live on feedlot. I look for grass fed for beef instead, milk and butter, too.” It’s little things like this that help when we start to try and make sense of the massive information overload when it comes to food products. Keep it simple with your family’s food choices, remember what your great aunt Ethel told you about which foods to eat, and you’re on the right track.

really think tonight’s clash between the Tigers and Dragons is a defi ning one for both clubs. After the Tigers stumbled at the hands of Manly last Friday night and the Dragons were hammered by the Bulldogs, the time has come for one of the two sides to stand up. The Tigers must fi nish off matches where they have done all the hard work to set up victory. A consistent, 80 minute performance is most defi nitely needed this evening. Tigers coach Tim Sheens can at least rest easy knowing that most of the problems from last week were self-infl icted. The Tigers dropped too much ball and went to sleep for a period early in the second half. Wests Tigers will hold a Grand Opening Sale at Gearzone Macarthur Square, Campbelltown, on Saturday, March 17. Titans half Scott Prince and his teammates will wear the socks in the distinctive gold and blue of the Men of League for their Men of League Heritage Round match against the Bulldogs at Skilled Park on Sunday, April 1. Prince is encouraging all junior and senior clubs and referees associations across the country to get behind the cause.

Newtown beaten by well-drilled Newcastle side

he Newcastle Knights proved they will be a major force in this year’s VB NSW Cup competition with their emphatic 42-24 win against the Newtown Jets at Toronto last Saturday. The Knights showed their hand early in the fi rst half, racing away to a 12-0 lead after 10 minutes. Th ings looked up for the Jets in the 24th minute when second-rower, Brad Takairangi, claimed a trademark try, and the Jets stayed in contention when front-rower, Ryan Verlinden, crashed over the line for a try three minutes before half-time. With the Jets trailing 18-10 at the break, Newtown coach, Greg Matterson, urged his players to improve their discipline. The Jets’ best intentions were blown away in the game’s third quarter as the Knights piled on three converted tries to extend their lead to 36-10, with another following soon after. Newtown’s two other tries were achieved by Adam Henry and Peni Tagive. Matterson acknowledged after the game that the Jets had been well beaten by a welldrilled, physically strong side.
