After delivering another blow to borrowers with a 12th rise in official interest rates in just over a year, Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor, Dr Philip Lowe, suggested mortgage holders cut back on their spending with rates set to keep going up in the battle to contain inflation.
The official cash rate is now at an 11-year high of 4.1 per cent and some economists are tipping the RBA could take it towards five per cent before the end of the year in the central bank’s fastest tightening cycle on record as it seeks to rein in persistently high inflation of nearly seven per cent.

Dr Lowe told a conference in Sydney last week: “If people can cut back spending, or in some cases find additional hours of work, that would put them back into a positive cash flow position.”
While some people thought those comments showed the RBA boss was out of touch, Broking Breakdown believes the escalating interest rates and continued cost of living issues mean people need to take their financial situation very seriously.
My advice is ‘don’t stick your head in the sand’ if you are struggling to make ends meet with increasing home loan repayments.
