ON HOUSING REFORM Labor will implement a $6.6 billion fix to Australia’s housing shortage if it wins the next federal election. Under the plan, Labor would build thousands of new homes and bring down rents for those in need. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten (pictured) said it was “the biggest national housing program since the Second World War”. “And we can pay for this $6.6 billion investment in jobs and housing and productivity and the future of our cities, because we’ve made the big reform decisions,” he said. “This is a boost for renters and for the liveability of our growing suburbs and our rural and regional towns. “And alongside our plans to make negative gearing fairer, it will drive a boom in construction jobs and apprenticeships.” Mr Shorten said Labor was “the party of home ownership”. “I know that when every Australian has the chance to fulfil their potential, the whole nation benefits. And the opportunity to have a roof over your head will

turbocharge the potential of the Australian people even more,” he said. Community Sector Banking Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Cairns, said Labor’s policy was a step in the right direction. “Bill Shorten is right to say that rental affordability is a national challenge however it is more of a national crisis,” he said. “The majority of very low income households in Australia are under rental stress meaning they are spending more than 30 per cent of their income on rent.” Not surprisingly, the Federal Government has failed to welcome Mr Shorten’s plan for housing reform. “If Labor really cared about housing supply, they would scrap their ill-conceived plan to abolish negative gearing as we know it,” said Treasurer Josh Frydenberg. “Under our Government more than 100,000 first home buyers received a loan approval last year, the highest level since 2009/10. More than 200,000 new homes have been built every year since 2014 and more than a million jobs have been created on our watch.”
